Trolling the Dawgosphere

A Monday in late February. The euphoria over recruiting has died down. Another basketball season appears to be winding down without any exciting March prospects. Spring football practice is more than a month away.

Nothing going on, you say? Not at all, especially if you check around the “Dawgosphere.”

Here’s a sampling of how some media outlets and UGA fans are chiming in on a number of subjects near and dear to Bulldog Nation hearts, most of them football-related.

There is some grumbling in UGA Land about having to pay for higher ticket prices next season, but the move is an understandable one for an athletics department upgrading some facilities and coming off a football season in which it finished No. 2 in the national polls.

Not so fast, rants a UGA fan who’s dead set against the top item on Mark Richt’s wish list, an indoor practice facility, serving up a rather impassioned plea.

With a little more time to take stock after Signing Day, here’s another analysis of SEC recruiting that pegs UGA’s class third in the league, behind Alabama and Florida.

That’s not a surprising take, as most other recruiting experts have the Dogs assessed similarly. But we thought you’d be hungry for whatever table scraps we could find for you to gnaw on.

Who’s got the best college football fan blogging site? A favorite among UGA faithful is among the candidates in the SEC, but he offers his favorites for honors in some other conferences.

But hey, enough time for football later on. Spring is just around the corner, if the recent exploits of Gen. Beauregard are to be taken accurately. Ready to spend some time outdoors? So is another UGA fan who can’t wait for baseball season to start. UGA baseball.

the whole thing about an indoor facility is more about the show than it is an outright desperate need for the team. it can and will be used by other teams for other purposes, so it will be multi purpose. it is an expensive proposition, and yes UF does not have one. however, it would really complete the total package from a recruit’s standpoint IMHO.

I hadn’t paid any attention to the schedule for next year. But dang! I checked it this morning and it’s a killer. If ASU is any good it’s a monster. Alabama, LSU, USC, UT, UF, Auburn, and Vandy who always gives UGA a hard time.

If they get out with just one loss they deserve to be #1.

Go Dawgs.

Considering the revenue that the football program brings in…why not? As a student, I would often see the team “practicing” in the Ramsey Center during inclement weather. They definitely need something. Yes, it looks good, but it also meets a need.

If you think this is a good idea, forward to UGA folks and see if it can get some traction

I think that Vince’s Statue should go behind the scoreboard in the West End zone, which should be renamed The Vince Dooley Pavilion/End zone, sort of like Pesky’s Pole in Boston. I would make a pavilion of Brick that extends all the way across from the back of the new scoreboard to around 5-10 Feet short of the Bridge. I would have access to it from inside the stadium only. Imagine that at half time you want to meet up with some buddies…”Hey meet me at Vince.” It would be a meeting place at halftime where you could discuss the 1st half and still keep an eye on the band if you are into that. Outside the stadium the bridge is always a popular spot and the statue would be a focal point for people walking by before the game or students driving/walking by on there way to and from class. Imagine how many people would have a picture of themselves on the bridge with the Vince Dooley Statue and the Stadium in the background. Maybe I am getting a little ahead of myself, but they should take a page out of Turner Field and Yankee stadium with sort of a mix between Monument Park with a video screen on the back of the scoreboard so that people from the bridge can watch the game and so people can watch 1st half highlights during half time, while enjoying the Dooley Statue.

it was time for a price increase,no way uga should have been ninth in the league, besides, compared to what sugar bowl tickets were bringing, tickets at sanford are cheap!as to the indoor practice facility,i remembered fall practice being cancelled a couple of times last year, frustrating coach richt.this is understandable considering he was breaking in so many new o lineman.i want coach richt to have what he needs, raise ticket prices again if you have too.we met some needs in recruiting, and have a stockpile of good players to red-shirt.this is building for the future, and i am all for it.yes we added some skill players, but we also added 8 big ol’ linemen!

Before anyone gets miffed over the Dawgs finishing 3rd in recruiting consider this: We got what we needed. Alabama and probably Fla. had greater needs than us. We ain’t interested in finishing ahead of them in recruiting. We want to finish ahead of them on the scoreboard and in the polls. We’ll see.

Raising tickets is a perfectly logical move by the Administration. There is a robust secondary market for UGA tickets, so the true market value is still higher than the new prices.

I am soooo ready for UGA baseball. David Perno has assembled a very good team again this year. We struggled last year because of all of the freshman and sophomores we played. Those young players now have the experience to hopefully help the diamond dogs contend for another trip to Omaha.

The dawgs have plenty of money to build an indoor facility. Better yet, just raise tuition about $100 per student, that will generate a few mil over next few years and provide plenty of cash for the Richt to buy what he wants. Football must be a #1 priority baby to win it all!

When I saw the headline “Trolling the Dawgosphere”, I thought that was an invitation to be a troll on your blog. But I’ll pass on that.

However, I did find the comment about people being miffed about being rated 3rd in recruiting amusing. As if anyone can tell whose recruiting class is the best for at least another 3 to 5 years. The so-called experts are wrong so much that I am surprised anyone puts much stock in it. However, if you are rated in the top 20 in recruiting, it can be assumed that you have some good athletes that can help you win. And that is certainly the case with UGA.

By P Dawg

February 18, 2008 4:09 PM | Link to this

If $8 is going to make a differnce to you then you have no business going to a game in the first place. UGA has to keep up with the other programs in terms of facilities to impress top recruits and sustain competitiveness. It’s a very small price to pay if you ask me.

By ARdawg

February 18, 2008 4:36 PM | Link to this

Inclement weather is always a problem in game preparation, year in and year out. An indoor practice facility is affordable and makes sense. This would be one less obstacle to deal with on the way to our next national championship. The fact that it will impress possible recruits is a side benefit.

On the #3 in recruiting this year is really immaterial. CMR filled the needs for a team already loaded with talent. That situation is a good one to have and doesn’t exactly lend itself to recruiting the 5 star prospects in all positions. Some people just can’t be pleased. It’s a great class.

Plus a ticket actually cost around $200.00 when you add up what the contribution is to qualify. Face value is about a meaningless factor. Could go to $50 and it would only affect the “street” price.

By P Dawg

February 18, 2008 5:12 PM | Link to this

People need to stop listening to these recruiting rankings because each team has different needs and these rankings are just overall talent rankings. Look at next year. UGA will only have 13 or 14 scholarships to offer so they won’t even be in the top 20. They might get every player they NEED out of those scollies but they won’t be listed atop Rivals or Scouts top 10, but who cares? We got the guys that we needed for CMR and his staff to work with. People are getting WAY too hyped up about this. Look how many top 5 recruiting classes Goff and Donnan got. Almost every year. How many SEC or national championships did they win? 0—combined! Yes, it’s nice to see UGA ranked high at anything but I want the REAL rankings that really matter to go our way and that’s at the end of the season!

By tdog

February 18, 2008 5:27 PM | Link to this

They want to raise ticket prices to a game that is hard enough to even get in to for regular fans, and they want to put a statue in front of the stadium for Richt to put a black jersey on when he needs a gimmick to fire up the hoodlums he is assembling. Plese use the money to keep prices down and play football.

By R. E. H.

February 18, 2008 6:23 PM | Link to this

The thing about tickets is really puzzling. The athletics program cleared some 30 to 35 million after expenses last year, so is the increased prices the kicker to get the new facility?

By P Dawg

February 18, 2008 6:24 PM | Link to this

They won’t give him more money until he does what he doesn’t want to do—-asks for it. Richt would have to entertain offers from the NFL or other scools for UGA to cough it up voluntarily. Until then, he’ll keep making what he’s making. Evans and Adams will have to get him up to par with the top tier coach’s salaries soon and they know it.

Georgia needs an indoor practice facility like the Falcons need a trophy case. Don’t you think it’s about time to do something about the cow palace we play basketball in? It’s a disgrace and all I hear about is making the weight room bigger and an indoor practice facility. Well let me get this straight, the NCAA hasn’t changed the rules about how may football players we can have, so why the hell do we need a bigger weight room?? And, Florida doesn’t have an indoor practice facility and they’ve won two national championships and kicked our a* every year for the last 18 except two. Doesn’t seem to effect them now does it? Oh yeah, they’ve also won back to back National Championships in basketball and have a real nice place to play that too. Shut up about the football improvements. Mark Richt is paid well enough too. Hire a real basketball coach and see what happens.

To sick and tired,

Making the football program as profitable as possible is the key to upgrading the facilities for a basketball team that hasn’t made serious waves since the days of ‘Nique. The upgrades for the football stuff can easily be funded by bonds on future tickets sales; which kinda explains the increase in tickets prices, doesn’t it?

By loyal dawg

those “supporters” of our program that oppose an indoor facility are blind. They obviously never played football. you need a place to practice in the summer thunderstorms. every practice you cancel sets you back. plus the facility will be a great recruiting tool. As one of the loyal uga supporters who puts thousands of dollars into the program annually shut up and give. So many Ga supporters recieve so much more than they have ever given. People have had 50yd lines seats and have given the minimum for decades. I’ve had tickets for twelve years and have consistently been in the top 200 givers with a platry donation of five grand. We did great in recruiting and that is the truth. Look over the past five years and we have the highest ranked aggregate of classes in the nation (tied with Southern Cal). And we ended up #2 in the nation this year. The only reason we “dropped” in the recruiting rankings in 2008 was because a headcase tight end signed with Klempson instead of UGA. (We are stacked at TE anyway). We are three deep at every position. Never has Georgia been this loaded in talent and coaching. The next four years are going to be a great ride.

The toss up will be in Memphis. UT must get by Auburn this week and Memphis Tulane before the East meets West affair. I worked a few years over in Memphis and that city is gung-ho on Tigers BB. UT’s RPI is ranked first in the country and that bodes well heading down the stretch, but they must finish strong and show well in the SEC tourney. A win over Memphis wouldn’t hurt that RPI one bit…From my seat here in NE GA, at this point I give the edge to the Tigers in this game.

TNT, I hope they still make the kids practice in the heat because that’s part of why we kick northern and western teams a*******es most of the time when we play them here in the south—-we’re used to it. Don’t spoil them in 75 degree weather and then make em’ play in 100. This facility should be used for rainy conditions so we don’t have to cancel practices. Thats my humble opinion anyway. Lets blow the lid off this football program. Build the indoor facility. We are looking thru a window of time where we need to pour it on. Dont do like the Miami Hurricanes and let our facilities slide and rest on your laurels. We have recourses beyond that of Southern Cal or Florida. We just need a title to validate that. In 10 years Georgia may be absolutly off the charts as far as its athletic program. Everyone that studys that will tell that is a fact. We have to keep pushing.
