Pre-mocking the mock draft
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The first step toward the NFL Draft comes this weekend at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, with the Falcons and their new GM/college scouting ace Tom Dimitroff, taking in the top prospects to figure out whom they’ll take with the third, fourth or fifth pick (to be determined during a combine coin flip). And beyond.
Dimitroff and others in the Birds’ Nest aren’t singing about any particular favorites, but the release of several players last week does add to their considerations.
A new tight end is one of them, after Alge Crumpler was made expendable. Here’s one man’s best draft bets at that position.
Want to get all the details for the scouting combine, including air times on NFL TV? Here’s the 411.
The draft “experts” have just begun to get warmed up, with one suggesting the Falcons take a player “a player the city can rally behind.” Meaning Atlanta, of course.
Dittos to that pick from another corner.
If you think the Falcons have a tough decision to make, when what about the Dolphins with the top pick? So many needs, so many ways to get it wrong.
And here’s a quick blogroll of some mock drafts to mull over as the focus shifts to the Hoosier State in a few days:

First! I think the Falcons need to take Matt Ryan. Get the franchise QB now so the development doesn’t take as long as if they waited a year. Sit him for this entire season and let him learn. Build an O-Line over the next 2 years and we should be solid.

Darren McFadden is the absolute best choice for the Falcons. After McFadden, the next best choice is Dorsey or Ellis at the defense tackle position. The Birds can pick up a quality QB in the later rounds. If we take McFadden, then With the two second round picks, the offensive and or defensive line need should be addressed.

QB draftee is a wasted pick, besides MV7 will be back at the helm real soon.

Forget Matt Ryan, the media has convinced everyone that he’s the best out there, Chad Henne has shown more and Ryan won’t be there any way. Then there’s Glen Dorsie which doesn’t matter any way because when the time comes for free agency they’ll let him free like Kerney. If he’s signed last year they would have freed up that pick for more need.

Either Matt Ryan or Darren Mcfadden would not be good selections for the Falcons. We’re looking for a north-south guy and DMAC is definitely not part of the power game mularkey is looking for. Trade the pick for some second rounders and just draft anybody who can play.

I kind of agree with the McFadden pick, look at what Adrian Peterson did for the Vikings last year, they almost made the playoffs.

Interesting answers. Frankly, I would love to trade the pick for multiple picks but what team holds them? Norwood is legit so I would not draft Mcfadden, Vick will be released soon snd I wouldn’t pass on him having to prove himself so I guess Dorsey would be my pick if I had to get one. Ryan will have to wait a yr or two to develop. Atl fans will not be patient waiting too long for a winner.

Everyone talks about how great Peterson was last year, but Minnesota has one of the best run-blocking O-lines in the NFL. He had several lousy games, too, when the line was not opening holes. McFadden won’t do much without a better line, which will take a couple of years to build, at least. We need to start up front on both sides of the ball with either Jake Long or one of the D-tackles (Dorsey or Ellis).

Vick back at the helm?
LMFAO…the only thing he will be at the helm of is the prison league.
Draft Ryan and move the team to the subs North Atlanta. it would be the best thing to ever happen to this franchise. Marta and the Vick supporters can’t go.

Hi y’all! Several pro scouts have made the statement that Ryan is not a franchise QB. What I would rather do is pick one up in round 2 thru 4 and have him learn for a couple of years, while we are building the offensive line to protect him. Pick a QB that will be ready in about three years. I would love to pick up either Glenn Dorsey or Jake Long. Both would go a long distance toward the rebuilding process. I also expect us to draft an RB later as well, a little heavier than D-Mac. It would be nice if it’s our turn to pick and Dallas is chomping at the bit to get D-Mac in their camp…

With the season OB Anderson had last yr, Cleveland has made Brady Quinn available. He can do everything the current college QB pool can do, and he has a yr of experience. He’ll be much less of a risk and you wouldn’t have to use a draft pick to get him.
For those of you crying for McFadden or Ryan, who’s going to block for them? We’ve just released 3 OL that were 4yr starters(OG KForney, LT WGandy and RT TWeiner). Do you guys ever pay attention? Both the GM and HC said they wanted to get stronger up the middle on both sides of the ball. How in the devil does that automatically translate into using our top draft pick on a QB and RB?
With DT RColeman gone, and TLewis coming off an injury, we definitely need another DT. With only 2 starters left on the roster(OC TMcClure and OG JBlalock)we definitely need OLinemen. Since it’s been declared that Brookings will not play MLB, he must be replaced. Since FS CCrocker and OLB DWilliams won’t likely be resigned, they must also be replaced. If we get the #3 pick, look for us to possibly trade down for more picks, especially if we decide to use FA’s for our QB and OLinemen.
LSU’s DT Dorsey would be my 1st choice. DLinemen will be the most expensive position on the FA market this yr. Last yr it was OL. That’s why we need to draft our DL, and sign FA OLinemen. A power running OFF won’t work without a strong OL. The Falcons have demonstrated how difficult it is to stop the pass without a strong pass rush.
I don’t think Dimitroff and Smith are looking at next season as a rebuilding yr. They seem to be looking to upgrade the talent to suit their OFF and DEF philosophy. We won 4 gms last yr when we were in complete disarray, especially at QB, DL and OL. Look at the number of gms we could have, or should have won. With better organization, talent, implimention and attitude, they are looking to at least double last yrs win total. We’ll start the season with a real place kicker and our QB of choice. All of you negative minded individuals are going to be surprised.

If Darren Mcfadden is still there when we pick. They will pick him, he will put buttz in seats period. We can always pick up a QB in FA or the 2nd or 3rd rounds. If we trade with Dallas which would be the only deal I would trade mcfadden for. getting Barber and 2 low round number 1 picks would be good. If mcfadden is gone, getting Dorsey, Ellis or Long if avail. Getting Ryan would be PLAIN STUPID, He is going to be the next RYAN LEAF.

Some of you Vick lovers are ridiculously obtuse! The Falcons have a guy who can play quarterback and can play it well, Chris Redman. Vick is not anywhere near being free. If he gets out a year early, and there’s no guarantee of that happening, he will still miss the entirety of next season. He also must face prosecution in virginia and he could get many more years to serve if found guilty there. His suspension, an indefinite one, will become of specified duration once he applies for reinstatement to the league. That suspension will, in all probability, be for a year or more. There’s another factor you morons aren’t taking into consideration and it’s the most important one, Mr. Blank doesn’t want anything to do with Vick! Vick is done here and he’s probably not an attractive player to any other team either. The league itself now has stepped in to try to recover the money he stole from Mr. Blank. If that money is not repaid Vick will never be signed by any other NFL team. The reality of the situation is Vick is finished as a player in the NFL! The Falcons will go on without him and I suspect they will draft a quarterback somewhere in the middle rounds. Shockley isn’t an NFL calibre quarterback, so you can cross him off the roster.

Thank you, Ken Strickland. A voice of reason to look at the value of either Brady Quinn or DA for a trade or aquisition. Unlike a Matt Ryan who is unproven and will likely holdout, not learn the playbook, and be clueless on day one, either of these QBs could be had… for a price partially in trade. Keep Redman, release Harrington, and let the rebuilding begin, saving those draft picks for Jake or Chris Long!

The optimal draft would involve the Falcons trading down for multiple picks, i.e. Dallas. Until that happens Look for the Falcons to draft J Long or Dorsey to be strong up the middle. Depending on Free Agency (Dibril Wilson would be an excellent addition) the Falcons should try to take either Flacco or Henne as a developmental project and the best LB, RB, OL/DL, or S available in the 2nd round and look for them to continue stocking up the lines throughout the draft.

Guys, Historically QBs drafted early has not done that well lately. If we (Falcons) take Jake Long with the first pick, then we can go after a Qb and a Rb later. Flacco, Henne, Woodson, Dixon, and Booty will all be there for the second round. RBs are deep in this draft too. (Hart, Johnson, Choice, Slaton, and my sleeper the RB from texas Charles. The Falcons always go after the pretty picks, but all the good teams in the league has a good OL and DL.

Ken Strychnine comes through again with more idiotic pronouncements. Fool, the Falcons aren’t gearing up for next year or the year after. Dimitroff cut seven lousy players, and he’ll get rid of more, to make room for players of value. Those players will come from the draft and free agency but mainly, they will come from the draft. The model the Cowboys established in the ’90s,and replicated by the Patriots and others more recently, is the one Dimitroff is emulating. The core of the team will be young players that Dimitroff drafts. The goal is to establish a team that can win consistently for a long period of time. Free agents are brought in when necessary and only then. Winning next year would be nice but don’t expect a huge number of victories. In 2009 the team should be growing together and winning much more than in 2008. 2010 is the year Dimi is targeting for the Falcons to be a force in the league.
Ken, are you going to watch the draft at one of those gay, sports bars? i bet you’ll be gorging on those little weenies on a stick.

Redman is capable of being a 22-25 TD QB if we improve the quality of the line in front of him. He has the respect of the team already and he is a quiet yet firm leader. Dorsey or Ellis should be the only choice with our pick if they are available. Put either one next to the emerging Trey Lewis and we will see immediate returns on the front line. Jake Long struggles when he has to play speed ends. Ryan and Henne have been both efficient and erratic QBs. The better QB selection would be Brohm. His consistency has been solid throughout his career and his “intangibles” are second to none. Forget the Petrino connection; TD said that need comes first. Brohm will be the BEST QB to come out of this draft, TRUST ME!! Our running game can me upgraded with a power back who is reminiscent of Andrews and Anderson; Forte out of Tulane. And I offer a sleeper at MLB..a kid from Arizona, Spencer Larsen. This would work and establish a core for the future. And the cost would be much more cap-friendly in the long term. GO FALCONS!!

I am also thinking we may invest a 3rd rd pick for JD Booty if available. Coach Smith says run and stop the run. So we build both Lines and develop a respectable qb. As far as backs go We go after Mike Turner or a tough yardage back in FA. Barber will be too expensive. We should also use Norwood as an Eric Metcalf type player

i agree with alot of you guys, DON’T DRAFT A QB WITH THE 1ST PICK!!!! Redman showed more with a terrible line last year than alot of QB’s. Re-signing him is a priority. As for that first pick, if Ellis and J. Long are not available then we have to trade the pick. Forget McFadden, he will get killed with the line we have, and we will not be able to fix that in one season, maybe not in two!!
Henne has always looked good to me at QB, he seems like the most NFL ready. He played in a tough conference (though, nothing like the SEC), and reports are he wowed the scouts at the senior bowl. BUT…the best teams in the league have a great O-line and D-line. TRADE THE PICK!!! There will be plenty of talent available at QB, RB, and OT that we have nothing to lose. Sure, they won’t be the “name” guys, but we get solid football players.
While we are in this rebuilding mode, lets trade D-Hall for some picks to beef up the lines as well. We went 4-12 with him, we can sure do it without him. A shutdown CB in his prime, thats worth a 1st at least, sucker the right team and its a 1st and two 2nd’s, one next year.
In closing, GO FALCONS!!!! I was a fan at 4-12, I’ll be a fan next year, and all the years i have left after that one!!! For all you b*** and moaners, find another team. Either support OUR team or shove off. No team is ever perfect (no pun intended), and I have every faith that the powers that be know a little more about football and personel than I do. Just wanted to share my two cents, for what its worth!!

COUNTRYDAWG-it’s not how often you fall down, but how often you get up. You stood big time with you apology. We’re cool.
DAVID PUKE-to answer your question, I don’t frequent bars period. So, you can rest easy knowing you can go to any gay bar you choose without bumping into me. Why would you chastise COUNTRYDAWD for showing self respect and some home training(attributes in which you are totally lacking). And trust me you little strawberry cupcake, only a (S)he(H)e(IT)would suggest that a real man go rubbing on another man. But how could you possibly comprehend the expectations of a real man. Hell, you’re still confused about which end your sex organ is located.
I guess we should all be thankful DAVID PUKE/TITO spends so much time on these blogs. Otherwise he might be somewhere doing what so many others like him do. Social and psychological misfits like him/her that crave attention, recognition and suffer from self loathing and a severe inferiority complex usually end up becoming serial killers, rapist and/or bombers. On the other hand, we can rule out him becoming a rapist. How could this little kitten possibly rape anyone. He/she most likely has fantacies about being raped, and not by a women. After all, he identifies with them totally.

Atlanta would be a fool to take a QB in the frist round.
we need linemen on both sides of the ball. we have not had a pro bowl offensive linemen in years and we sure is weak at DT on defense too. all the Qb’s in the frist round be a waste with on line men.
we had two frist round draft QB last year and a weak offense line got them killed! we see the Gm knows how to cut players now let’s see can he draft skill players the team needs! T-420 days till superman come back!

Dunn cant get it done anymore (especially with our o-line), Norwood is good makin the big plays but not an every-down back. We NEED McFadden, the one, two punch that McFadden and Norwood could bring would be tough for defences to stop. Maybe defenses will start focusing on the run, then our hopefully improved(from the draft/free agency) o-line wont be continually rushed on passing downs. The difference in Mcfadden and the next best Rb is much greater than Ryan and the next best QB. DRAFT MCFADDEN

JoeBrave, there is a reason that the Steelers are letting Starks walk. If he was a valuabel as you think, he would not have lost his job to a rookie player..and he lost it b4 he was injured. There is no way that Carolina will lose Jordan Gross. You can count on them re-signing him. But there is a Jordan Gross-like out there for us to take; Heath Benedict. He will be our left tackle of the future. Let me remind you all of a fact. Both NE and JAX were very good when it came to looking at the small schools to fine talent. TD is very good at finding high quality D1-AA talent and Smitty has been part of finding great D2 defensive talent. Do not think for a second that we are not looking there again. It will save money and you will get a player that really appreciates the chance to play the game at the next level.

BLIND SQUIRREL-I want you to listen to what I’m about to tell you and then think about it before you respond. I guarantee our HC and GM don’t consider this a 3yr project. The reason they’re purging the roster of high cap vets is to clear cap space. They’re looking in every corner to free up every dollar for signing FA’s. Do you really think they’re doing that just to sign draft picks. They intend to upgrade the key positions with quality FA acquisitions, not draft picks. These FA’s will be vets that have proven their ability to perform in a power rushing OFF. And you can be certain of that fact if we sign a vet QB.
These aren’t the moves of an organization with a 3yr plan, or one not expecting to win immediately. If this was a 3yr plan they’d be adding draft picks to the 9 we already have instead of adding cap space.
Look at how the team performed the last few gms with Redmon and without Petrino. Our OL had 2nd and 3rd stringers starting. Once we settled our QB situation and had intelligent, balanced play calling, we became more than just competitive. With 9 draft picks, intelligent utilization of our cap and proper evaluation of talent, we can become a winner next season, not 3yrs from now.

Ken Strychnine, once again you seek to deflect suspicion about your illicit, homosexual lifestyle by casting aspersions upon others. This type of defense mechanism is known as projection. You seek to avoid being exposed as gay, so you accuse someone else of what you are guilty of. In this endeavor, you are much like Senator Larry Craig who ranted in the Senate about defending the sanctity of marriage. Also like Senator Craig, you’ve been exposed as a flaming queer.
When I told the rural canine to rub yo nasty, wooly head you know it had nothing to do with any perverse sexual practice you may engage in. Rubbing the noggin of a brillo pad covered head is supposed to bring good luck. I don’t blame him if he didn’t want to take a chance on catching some communicable disease from you. It’s understandable!
Ken, I’m definitely not confused as to the location of my ample sexual organ. I’m a man. You, on the other hand, are some sort of androgynous freak. Ken, learn something here-nobody’s sex organs are located in the lower extremities of the colon. It’s just not natural what you’re doing.
Now, Queen Ken, this is America and you’re free to be as gay as you want to be. We all support that right for you to practice your nasty, disgusting, aberrant homosexuality but why do you persist in stalking? We don’t support that! It’s very obvious you know nothing about football, so why don’t you go to a gay oriented site and subject the other gay folks to your idiocy? We’ve had enough of you and your compadres in gayness might like having your dumb a* around.
Well, go put on your nitie and get into bed with your husband and do that doo doo that you do. You’re always good for a laugh. Good night princess.

If anyone needs more proof that Ken, the Queen, Strychnine doesn’t know a damn thing, take a look at his most recent evacuation. He asserts the Falcons are going to be signing every free agent they can. Not accurate! They will sign some but the team will be built through the draft! What they’ve been doing is purging the team of useless players and that purge will continue. The team will be, for the most part, put into place through this year’s draft and next year’s. The Falcons expect to have a challenging, competitive team on the field within three years. Of course, they want to win all the games they possibly can but Dimitroff knows that before you can run you first must walk!

I agree that this franchise can’t afford to wait on developing players. They are losing season ticket holders as we speak. So if letting all these players go for FA players. They better be ready to pay out a lot of money. Because we have a lot of gaps on our roster and, a lot of gaps in the stands. So I hope that they have a serious plan. One question. Who are we building this team around? If we don’t know that. Then how can we fix this franchise…. I think we will have a lot of blackouts this year. I HATE TO SAY THIS BUT, VICK TOOK THIS BUSTED UP TEAM TO THE PLAYOFFS. SOMEONE OR A GROUP OF PLAYERS COME IN AND TAKE IT FURTHER. PEOPLE WE NEED SERIOUS HELP. ONE GOOD NOTE FOR OUR OLD DEFENSE. THEY HELD US IN EVERY GAME BUT I THINK THREE OR FOUR GAMES.

I belive that Matt Ryan would by your boy. Some scouts don’t like him sure but what draftee has their been that at no point recieved criticism. The best aspect about Matt Ryan is his intellegince and more importantly his rare intangibles something you guys drasticly need after the mike vick incident.

The DL from USC is the man. Either he or the OL from Mich should be available when the Falcons pick. Redman is servicable at QB while they develop a picked in second or third round. I wouldn’t expect Shockley to survive roster cuts this year he may end up on the practice squad. Vick has played his last snap as a Falcon. I wish it wasn’t so but it is the truth.

Why in the world would anyone think the city of Atlanta will rally behind Matt Ryan?? In what parallel universe?? The Dome is already gonna be half empty, unless the franchise is getting ready to pack it up and move to Oklahoma City, I would suggest re-thinking Ryan as a “franchise” anything. He’s already not worth first round money based on skills, and some dumb Northeast mediahead has convinced some nuts that Ryan could help this woeful franchise?? LMAO!!

If yo need to protect whatever QB you have, you need a OT first and foremost, then in the second or third round you get a RB or QB then go for the DT, TE and other OL.

The OL is the most glaring need on this team and has been for years. Take Jake Long in the first round, followed by both Mendenhall from Illinois, and Chad Henne from Michigan in the two second round picks.

You can tell I hit the nail squarely on the head. Our little blossom has blown up this blog trying to convience himself and everyone else I’m wrong about him/her/it. What’s with the comment about having an AMPLE ORGAN. Is that your way of telling everyone you have a big ANUS?
I want to talk about football, which means I’m through talking to and about you miss daisy.
All of the mock drafts except one has us taking QB Ryan. His high rating is due mostly to being considered the best overall QB in the draft. Individually, he’s not really considered a can’t miss franchise type QB. His passing skills are rated a notch above average, but he’s rated very high on intangibles. That would make Cleveland’s BQuinn a much better choice as a franchise QB. He can be had without sacrificing a pick.
For those blinded by their obcession with drafting a QB with our 1st pick, consider this. Cleveland traded up to draft Quinn as their franchise QB. But their plans were interruped by a QB they acquired to be his backup. Anderson performed so well that Quinn is now on the trading block. So you don’t have to waste a 1st rd pick to acquire a franchise QB, nor one that can get the job done. Look at how well Redmon performed under more adverse circumstances than ByronL and JoeyH faced. And he’d been out of football for a couple of yrs. Also, look at the Saints revival. They acquired their franchise QB in a trade after San Diego had a situation simular to Clevelands. He was Allpro his 1st yr with the saints. Do any of you think that could happen with any QB in this yrs draft?
With the speed and gm breaking ability of JNorwood, we don’t need a McFadden type of RB, although it wouldn’t hurt to have one. If we draft wisely and make sound FA acquisitions, we can rebuild/upgrade our OL and DL. Having solid OL blocking up front and solid DL play, along with a strong pass rush, will overcome a lot of other problems. The Giants won the superbowl because their DL whipped the pants off the Patriots OL and their OL more than held their own against the Patriots DL. I DO NOT SEE US HAVING A LOSING SEASON NEXT YR. THIS ORGANIZATION AND THIS TEAM IS GOING TO SUPPRISE EVERYONE.

The NFL Media is pushing Matt Ryan This guy is not all that. Franchise QB MY @$$. They at NFL network my think we will rally around him they are a real 1Th class fool.I want to win we need Linemen.
This guy is a roll of the dise and he is a pure pocket passer in Atlanta , they are nuts. I can see drafting a QB in the 3th or 4th round 1th round no way in Hell. There are to many good linemen comming out this year!
Our Gm we as season ticket holders are waiting to see if you are for real are a want-to be GM.
If he drafts Matt in the frist round we have done no better than MCkay! We need line men on both side of the ball!

Well, I see the internet stalker is back, trying to, once again, project his illness onto someone else. Ken Strychnine comes on to this board and heaps scandalous allegations, all of which he, himself, is guilty of, and then dishes more stale information we’ve all been aware of for weeks. Queer boy, the Falcons aren’t going to trade for Quinn! There’s really no clear indication that Cleveland is putting him on the market. The Falcons may pursue a quarterback in free agency but there probably won’t be a trade. The Falcons don’t have anyone that any other team would want. So, stop with your idiotic speculation. You know nothing and we don’t really need you to share your lack of knowledge with us.
You don’t see the Falcons having a losing season next year? Well, Nostradamus, it’s good to know you’ve taken a look ahead for us. Did you see anything about world peace? This team will be built through the draft! The goal is to build a strong foundation and that’s done through drafting wisely. Dimitroff knows what he’s doing and he doesn’t need help from the trans gendered community you reside in. Get on back to that She/Man blog and leave the sports talk to us men. So long aggotfa!

SEAON TICKET HOLDER-remember, this is the same media that went overboard about BQuinn and Brian Leaf. NFL teams let Quinn drop down the draft board like a big rock. The desperate Chargers bought the RLeaf hype and look what happened. One of the worst #1 picks in NFL history. The only one worse was the drafting of a Heisman trophy winner out of Oregan or Oregan State. His 1st name Terry, but I can’t remember his last name. He was also a starter on their basketball team. I don’t know if he ever played a single down in the NFL.

Thanks for another meaningless and poorly researched post. Quinn was picked by Cleveland after trading with Dallas. He was picked late in the first round. It’s not like he fell to the fourth or fifth round. Why don’t you leave the transactions and draft picks to Dimitroff? He knows what he’s doing and you don’t have a semblance of a clue. Who needs to learn how to spell when there’s a lite in the loafers spell check available. And for your information fruitcake, technically Dallas did draft him, but as part of a prearranged trade with Cleveland. Dallas may have made the selection, but Cleveland determined which selection they made. But, how could anyone possibly expect a retired cheerleader to know anything about the intricacies of pro football.
For any projected #1 overall pick to fall to the late 1st rd is equivalent to a big falling rock. You need to leave me alone and find other ways to amuse yourself when your boyfriend’s not around. You don’t measure up to me you little panty wearing freak. You can’t convince a single individual on these blogs you aren’t gay. Look, this team is old and mediocre in so many areas. The o-line does not have any road graters at all as they are designed for the Vick skill set (smaller, quicker Alex Gibbs guys). The team is going to have to undergo a serious philosophical change on the o-side and the best way to reflect this is to either draft Jake Long or Matt Ryan. In the NFC South, running QBs will not win the title as the DE’s on all of the teams were drafted to contain them (why did Vick struggle ALL the time against the Panthers and Bucs?) Those of you who do not know Ryan must be reminded that he played with a woeful cast of characters at BC and without him they would have never been in contention for any bowls. He is poised, has mobility and delivers an accurate ball. On defense, they need to seek value all over the field especially at safety; drafting a corner and moving him to safety is not out of the question as they are lacking range in the free and strong safety areas.
Jimmy Williams, DeAngelo Hall and Chris Houston were drafted to bring stability to the secondary and they need to do this immediately or be traded for picks who will. There are holes at the linebacker position as well with Abraham being hurt more than he is playing and Brooking getting longer in the tooth (although it is in their best interests to keep him long term). Lastly, the WR corps sucks to be frank. Drafting receivers in the 4th-6th round brings more value than a first round guy. Drafting, signing or trading for a TE with speed up the middle of the field will open things up for them as long as the scheme established predicates sticking with the run and making defenses respect it.
All in all this team needs a complete overhaul in culture and philosophy. This is why the owner brought in the GM they have now…they want a business model that is self sustaining and replenishes itself within 4-5 seasons. Believe me, there will be no sentimental picks made from this point on; there will also be no more drafting of VT players to please the ‘face of the franchise’. If you are losing, there is no face of the franchise. This must be established by sticking to a program and plugging pieces into it that make it better in the short term at reasonable expense. That is the game.
Overall, I would go with Jake Long if he is available and then go QB in the second round if any of the underacheiving veterans cannot be traded for additional picks.

I almost agree with the last blogger. Jake Long looks like the best overall prospect to me. I wouldn’t invest that much into a 1st round QB. Especially with the money a top 5 QB in the draft is going to demand. Also I like McFadden but he does not have the body type that say a A Peterson does. He has small legs somewhat similiar to Norwood. I just don’t know if he’s gonna be able to take the pounding. In the end a massive left tackle would do wonders for creating the offensive line that we need. Look at how Cleveland improved after drafting a top tier lineman in the 1st round last year.

Draft Defense, if Glenn Dorsey is there, take Dorsey. We need to build our defense first since we have some pieces on offense. The worse case we can draft Booty out of USC. I strongly believe he may be the best QB after it is all said and done. He is running a pro-style offense at USC. Not to mention, look at the other QB’s that have come out of USC, not too bad.
If we don’t use this pick on Dorsey, then trade the pick to move down in the draft to get more draft picks. We have a lot of holes to fill, this is a very deep draft for defensive players, we need 2 safeties, another DT and possible another MLB.
Those are my 2 cents.

As much as it looks like Matt Ryan is the #1 QB in the draft, drafting a QB high in the first round has about a 30% hit rate. Running backs seem to pay off better in the first round, but the position that is almost a 100% guarantee high in the first round is offensive line.
There are way too many good QBs in this draft to take one in the top 5. I would either take Jake Long, Darren McFadden, or Chris Long in the first round, or trade the pick for more picks later. How about Dallas’ two first round picks? You know Jerry would love to have McFadden. Do the deal - it makes more sense and you spread your risk between two players vs. one.
I would recommend everyone judge the Atlanta draft by one statistic - how much the group weighs. We need linemen on both sides of the ball badly.

Okay, say we use the top pick to draft a QB. He’ll sit (or play like a rookie) for at least a year & we STILL wouldn’t have upgraded the O-line significantly (besides…hopefully…the one stout O-lineman we’ll get in free agency).

The first thing we need to do is trade down and with are first pick take CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. He is 6 2 Weight 175 40time is 4.35. Very fast. We need to trade DeAngelo Hall. He get bet to much and we can get a lot for him. With are 2 pick we take OL Gosder Cherilus.

Some times it seems to me that alot of the people who post on here do not have any idea of what they are posting and definitely have no knowledge of football or what’s going on with the Falcons. First of all the big name players out of college do not translate to quality players on the field and if you are going to draft a big name just to fill seats then you might as well just forfeit all your picks right now. Case in point: Michael Vick. Fast, exciting player? Definitely. Could fill the Georgia Dome? You bet. A 5-Star QB? Not in your wildest dreams. Now “Who is Tom Brady?” Brady was a 6TH round draft pick in the 2000 draft (199TH OA) and the only reason he was picked then was because NE had the player they wanted go 3 spots earlier. Otherwise he probably wouldn’t have gone till Rd. 7 if at all. Point is GM’s and coaches need to evaluate the talent, not the name. That goes for Atlanta’s current roster as well. I admire Tom D. and Mike Smith for going in there and cleaning house. All these high salaried injury prone geriatrics should be cut. Something else that should be done but definitely won’t in this day and age, and this goes for the whole league: “You want the PAY!, you got to PLAY!!!” All this guarenteed money crap is for the birds. It’s really causing alot of teams to waste good money on players who will not give their teams a good return on investment. Anyway, Atlanta needs to look at what they have. They already have a running game. They already have Ovie Mughelli, Jason Snelling, and Jerious Norwood. Petrino may as well have used them as the team’s towel boys last year, cause that’s about as well as he utilized their talents in the game. Chris Redman can play. Take out the Tampa game and he had a QB rating of 103.2 which would rank him 3rd behind Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger. Even with the Tampa game, he still had a QB rating of 90.4 for the year. Not bad for someone who hasn’t taken a snap since 2003. And the offense can score points (27 against ARI., 44 against SEA.) Where they really need help is on the Defensive side of the ball, especially along the line. Outside of Abraham they have nobody!!! Of the 25 sacks the ENTIRE defense accumulated, 10 were by Abraham, which is amazing considering he was double-teamed most of the time. 6 sacks came from the LB’s, 1 from the DB’s which left 8 for the rest of the D-line. Pitiful, absolutely PITIFUL!!!! Jamaal Anderson had “0”. Not bad for a top 8 pick in the draft. (Yeah, right!). All 5 of the Top 5 teams in the sacks department made the playoffs (the Giants, Patriots, Cowboys, Seahawks, and Chargers) and of those 5, 2 were in the SB. (Nough said). I would try to get “at least” 2 marquis players through free agency. 3 would be great! They should draft Dorsey or Ellis and try to work out a deal with the Titans for Haynesworth and Bironas. Moss is the only WR worthy of a big deal, so if he can’t be had then maybe the 2nd round of the draft or just work with what you have for now. Whatever else doesn’t get done I would give Redman a chance for 2-3 yrs. and next draft or the 2010 draft I would go after Tim Tebow - QB from Florida. Tebow is a QB who has Michael Vick running ability and who can actually pass. The only player I know of who has passed for 32 TD’s and rushed for 23 in the same season. Whatever it takes, just get Tebow, Dimitroff. You won,t be sorry.

Okay, this is a reach, and it takes patience, but since this is fantasy, here we go…..draft up the middle this year like they say, DT, Safety, Guard, Center. And then NEXT YEAR, take the QB from Oregon. Let him prove that he’s back from injury, and if so, it’s a no brainer. I mean look how they did when he went down. I say he’s a better and improved version of a certain ex-QB (and current prisoner) named Vick. T
Like I said, fantasy, because we all know we’re not being listened to by Falcons management. But this could work if you think about it.
P.S. Tebow is nothing more than a triple A QB, compared to the one from Oregon….

craig when brady was draft what kind of player were on new england and still is on that team?
Vick has a 4th 5th 6th round draft pick all outcast on the offense line reciver that had hand of stone. Brady s and Vick team was as day and night. bring Brady to Atlanta and see how long he last.
If you watch New England you see how long brady set in the pocket no way he could do this in Atlanta. If you are going to compare compare offense line defense line recivers Brady is good but he had a lot of help vick had little to no help.
Ask Joey, leftwick , and redman the Falcon QB and look at how one player won three to four more win . The fact stand 4-12 last year.
In the draft we need linemen and we have need linemen for over 10 years. In most game who ever wins the line play wins the games!!!! Draft to win for win years and linemen is the KEY!!!

Neckville, the Giants took care of Brady. Every team in the league now knows how to render him useless. As for Vick, there’s precious little truth in his legend. It is fallacious to say he won games by himself. He lost them by himself but he didn’t win any. The truth is that most of the nogs quit on Petrino, just quit! Duhangelo Hall did worse than that! He intentionally threw a game. Some of the games won while Vick was here were won despite his woeful performances. He was a lousy quarterback, an even sorrier human being and he is now incarcerated. Serious, minorities are impacting our lives now. Ever hear of welfare? How about set-asides? Preferential hiring? Affirmative action? if you are gay and a minority to boot you have really hit the jackpot. There’s a tremendous amount of ill feeling about Mexicans sneaking into this country to work. I don’t mind it though because they are here to work! They are hard working, industrious people who don’t stick their hands out as if they are entitled just because they are here. It’s not that way with other minorities that have been out of work for four hundred years. As for the gays I don’t really care. I’m not really in favor of gay marriage.
