Does Bibby make the Hawks contenders?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Hawks have traded for Sacramento veteran point guard Mike Bibby, sending veteran point guards Anthony Johnson and Tyronn Lue back to the Kings, along with second-year forward Shelden Williams and veteran center Lorenzen Wright. The Hawks also gave up a second-round pick in the June draft.
The Hawks are 21-28 going into the All-Star weekend.
Does this move finally make the Hawks playoff contenders? Or did they sacrifice too much to get there?

Yes, this will push them into the playoffs. Probably as high as a 5 seed.

They were contenders before they acquired Bibby. The biggest issue has been coaching. The had most of the tools in place except a PG who is ready, or is good. Law is not ready and the other PG’s we had were unable to provide the spark/presence/production we needed. Acquiring Bibby not only puts the Hawks in playoff contention but now they are flirting with the southeast division title. Coaching will still be an issue, but this is Woodon’s true test! He finally has all the pieces:
PG-Bibby SG- JJ SF-Marvin PF-JSmoove C-Horford
If the Hawks can not compete Woodson must go!

It will be important to see who fills out the roster. Law, chills, zaza still make a nice bench but we still need a shooter with some size. Bibby will get joe a ton of open looks and maybe help salim get more pt and looks for him.

Great deal by the Hawks, giving up 4 scrubs to get a very good point guard. Bibby is steady and consistent. I am just glad to see Williams off the roster.

Sacrifice? WHAT sacrifice? We’re giving essentially nothing for a top shelf point guard. Wow. I like AJ and I think he can get the job done, but he’s not a star. TLue is a worthless dwarf, LoWright and Sheldon never play. If we can keep Marvin, the Joshi, JJ, AC4, and Big Al, and land this guy, this is huge. Billy must have gone to the Maloof’s casino and won big, and they’re paying him in playas. Wow.

This makes the hawks contenders in the East, but we will have to see how Bibby reacts to being traded to the Hawks. The Sac Bee article said he was surprised that the Hawks were the team acquiring him. hopefully he will bring that fire he showed his first couple of years as a King

The Hawks didn’t give up much in this trade. After all, Shelden Williams is the one guy the Kings acquired in this trade that isn’t old, injured, washed-up, or all of the above. If a year and a half of a career can be considered a bust, Shelden was a top-five pick bust in Atlanta. I don’t usually give Billy Knight any credit, but this was a good trade. It cleared a lot of dead weight off the team. This certainly should (SHOULD, Woody) lead to more playing time for guys like Acie, Zaza, and Salim.

good trade. But don’t stop here. We still need a shooter off the bench. Someone that is consistant ( which Salim is not), and another back-up big man

This was great move! We didn’t have to give up Chills or any of our core players. Anthony Johnson and Tyronn Lue were not true PGs and took way to many shots. We lost some many games because AJ’s bad shooting and leadership. Bibby will get it down and hit the shoot if he needs. I hope he can get around 8-9 assists a game. Now we need to have JSmoove take less jump shots and play more of a inside game on offense!!

The Hawks gave up 2 worthless big men and a couple of mediocre point guards for a better than average point guard. This makes them a playoff team. Does it get them to the 2nd round? Probably not. But at least Phoenix won’t be getting a lottery pick.

I’m 100% with A.S. I love my starting 5. I’ve always been hpeful of Acie Law and am glad he’s not out. He may eventually become the perfect backup for Bibby. A few years ago, I bought into the building a young core of players sell and am excited about this trade. It’s been time the management made a strong push for a solid lineup.
Woodson, whatcha got now?? It’s your time to prove what you can do.

We will see what Woody can do now.

I applaud the Hawks for making a bold move at the trade deadline. Bibby and his big contract was known and readily available. This is a salary dump trade so let’s not brand Billy Knight a genius just yet.

With that trade at least Billy Know it all Knight finally admits he f&cked up big time with the Shelden Williams pick…and yes we could have had Brandon Roy, and the year before that we could have had Chris Paul…and so the Billy Knight draft nightmare will never end unless his pathetic rear end is ran out of town. He’s ran this franchise into the ground…with his “I like my oatmeal cooked slow, none of that instant stuff” crap…how slow is slow…9 years with losing record, and its’ going to be another one this year.
Who cares if they make the playoffs with a losing record in the East! It means nothing, and I pray that it won’t be enough to save Billy Knight’s job.

Good trade for the Hawks. They should go after another shooter and another big man to shore up the front line. They should try to make a trade for Eddy Curry. I’m pretty sure the Knicks will part ways with him for very little.

February 16, 2008 5:06 PM | Link to this
Bibby is signed for another year (2008-2009) at $14.5 M, which gives the team time to develop Acie Law IV as his successor. Let’s hope he can galvanize this team so they can start winning games, especially the close ones, despite the coaching. Bibby is like a coach on the floor anyway, and he can break his man down off the dribble, something the Hawks have been unable to get from a point guard in eons.
The one player I will miss is TLue…he was clutch and played with a lot of heart and moxie.

February 16, 2008 5:06 PM | Link to this
Now all we lack is a sharpshooter, a coach, a GM, and a new owner, and we’ll fight for .500 for the next 5 years. It’s gonna take Bibby a few games to get acclimated before we get a good read on his production. All is for naught if we can’t lock up Josh Smith on a long-term contract at the end of the season. But, except for drafting Horford, this is the first thing the Hawks have done right in years.

Ya they’re contenders for a playoff spot, nothing more. They don’t have enough to challenge a boston, a detroit or even an orlando or cleveland. THey need to get a center to help out Horford.

Only if the Hawks can fire Woodson and hire Larry Brown (which will never happen) and fire Billy Knight and hire a GM the likes of R.C. Buford at San Antonio (which will never happen). So the answer is no.

YES! YES! YES! Are those tears coming from my eyes? I think I’m going to church in the morning. This is unbelievable. The Hawks did this? Someone pinch me HARD. This is EXACTLY what this team needs- a proven point and real gamer. I know Bibby may be surprised now, but once he sees what he’s working with here, I think he should be okay. Joe Johnson and Bibby in the backcourt? OMG! Now Josh Smith will get the ball in more timely places that will make him an even more potent threat on offense than he already is. If we can somehow down the road get a real big body to free Horford to play his natural 4 spot, this team will be in the mix for real then. Right now, I would to thank God for his divine intervention because I know the Hawks couldn’t have done this themselves…whatever the case may be, I am on cloud nine. I still think A. Law will be okay in the future, but right now is RIGHT NOW so he can stand to learn alot from Bibby and get better in the process until he is ready. Wow, I’m just stunned right now. Now I can FINALLY stop cursing management for not getting Chris Paul or Derron Williams when they had the chance. We’re cool now…LOL
GO HAWKS!!!

Contenders, sh**, they should at least be above 500 with the team they have now. We won’t be contenders until we get rid of Billy Knight and Mike Woodson. I’m tired fo seeing them have leads against scrub teams and losing. Cut from the top, it’s not the players.

This is a good trade. The guard spot has always been our weak link and with Bibby JJ has more time to take care of his body. We lose way too many close games. Why isn’t Woodson using his bench more? This is a punishing game and it has to happen with everyone contributing. If this doesn’t work, Woodson needs to go. Knight bashing is way over the top. He’s made mistakes but the core he has put together makes sense.

I think you said the key word, Darrin. Bibby is a GAMER. The guy won a national championship at Arizona and had one of the most epic performances in playoff history in the ‘02 Western Conference Finals against the Lakers. It gets forgotten because they lost the series, but Bibby was unstoppable.
While Bibby is a major upgrade in talent over T-Lue and AJ, I’m most excited about the intangibles that he brings. This team is obviously better than 21-28. With a bonafide leader and winner at point guard, maybe they’ll start to believe it.

First time I have actually seen Billy get of his butt and make something happen. Nice deal to give up 4 scrubs for a decent point guard. I like the trade, but some of you are smoking dope if you think this does anything more than solidify this team for a good chance at the playoffs. I certainly wouldn’t call it automatic, and the East sucks a*!

Playoffs? Playoffs? Don’t talk about playoffs. If you can’t make the playoffs in the NBA, you’re HORRIBLE! So what if they make the playoffs? The NBA playoffs are a JOKE. Duke could make the NBA playoffs. He11, Tech and UGA could probably make the NBA playoffs. I’ve played on rec teams that could probably make the NBA playoffs. My daughter’s team could make the NBA playoffs. And she’s 12. Two teams that are SEVEN GAMES below .500 would make the playoffs if the season ended today. What a joke. The Hawks may make the playoffs, but so what?

I’m with Mitch on TLue being the one player in that bunch that I’ll miss. But with a deal like this I can’t imagine any of us will be missing him for long. This is a great move, and should be enough to get us into the playoffs this year. Long-term, we still need a center who can run the floor, and even though Bibby can shoot we could still use another shooter on the wing. Great move, though. It’s hard to see how this trade could work out badly. I just don’t see a downside. But, then, we are talking about the Hawks so we’ll all have to wait and see.

Looks like a good move…Hate to lose T-Lue, but it had to be done. Unfortunate for Sheldon that Knight picked him way too high, but hopefully he’ll find some success. This should put the Hawks up there as near lock for the playoffs and possibly in a position to win a first round matchup.

Hawks, we all agree, needed a new PG and now we have him.
Now we will see how Shelden makes out with another coach. Will he remain the “bust” he has been made out by the Hawks coaching, or will he turn out to be good? Will the Hawks now sign some free agents to fill the roster, or will they come from the D league?

Finnaly! The Hawks just made a spectacular deal. It is about 6 weeks too late but they are getting a great point guard without having to sacrifice any of their real talent. Woodson should have been fired along time ago, but now at least he has no more excuses and if they dont make the playoffs he will defintely be gone which would be the best thing ever for this franchise. Lock up Josh Smith now or this trade will mean nothing.

Not sold, Bibby is an upgrade at the talent we had but you all are forgetting one thing this isn’t the same Mike Bibby that led Sacremento almost 7 years ago this Mike Bibby is older and lost a step and will be a liability on the defensive end I think the tandem of AJ and TLue did a decent job on defense what Atlanta should have done was try to get involved in the three way trade with NJ and Dallas and see if they can come away with Devin Harris now Devin does it all plays defense controls the tempo and has a nice outside shot and he is only 24 you would have a nucleus of Devin, JJ, Josh Smith and Horford to build for Years to come we would probably have lost Marvin and Childress but look at what you would be getting. my problem with this trade is Bibby is a liability on defense one glaring hawks flaw is getting abused by opposing pg and his age I think the Team will do better but how much does Bibby have in the tank. And for All the People that say I am hating I am not I am a Repeat Season ticket holder that wants my team to do more than just make the playoffs

Bibby is no worse at clutch shooting than T-Lue. If there’s anything that the Hawks lose in this deal it’s frontcourt depth (though not quality depth) and a PG who can D up bigger guards (AJ). This is pretty much a complete winner for the Hawks. I don’t see how this trade could have worked out any better, honestly, unless the Nets would have given up Kidd for the same group of players (which I highly doubt).

great trade, however, we need a new GM. Why did we not look at smush parker, steve blake or banks. I’m not a GM, but I did know that these guys were on the market last year. Also, you can’t say that passing up on Paul or Williams was a bust. They would not have done what they are doing now by playing in Atlanta. You have to look at the teams they are playing on and they coach and his system. Both of those players would not have been given the chance in Atlanta. Example would be Diaw, in Atlanta, he was ok. In Phoenix, he is excelling. Look at Marion, he goes to Miami, he will not be the same. Get my point. Let me be the GM.. I would have the hawks competing every year.

The only reason this is a great deal is because Woodson doesn’t know how to utilize his players and maximum their potential. I’m glad that Williams may get a chance to prove himself somewhere else. Johnson and Lue were solid performers, and Wright, who knows. Would not be suprised to see more moves coming. If you are only going to use 7-8 players anyway, why not trade some more from the end of the bench.

Don & Dan, come on now, Eddy Curry? You really want, lb 4 lb, the laziest player in the league on THIS roster?! If this guy can’t get the desire to work & perform for a Hall of Famer in NYC, what do think is going to happen here? The Hawks better consider themselves lucky they didn’t land a few years ago as a free agent; that investment wears #2 right now. This deal makes the Hawks a lock for post-season & probably moves them up to the 5 or 6 spot. It’s good to see that Billy Knight is finally living in the same reality as the rest of us; at least right now. This move may have saved Woodson’s job much like Ainge saved Doc’s job in Boston.

Just heard on ESPN that T.Lue, AJ, & L.Wright’s contracts were all expiring this year, and S.Williams contract is still under the rookie cap. The Hawks got what they needed, a true point, by trading 3 players that could have just walked at the end of the season, and a rookie that didn’t quite fit their new running style. Billy Knight actually made a good trade that makes sense.

I think this was the missing link, we were already so close, I think we can battle it out with Cleveland/Orlando/Washington/Toronto to be on that level, I really do.
I REALLY REALLY REALLY RELALY DO. And the future is even brighter for next season with Marvin, Smoove, Chillz and Horford improving. Especially Marvin at the 3 and Horford in the lowpost, he is a monster……..
Even if the Nets and Bulls turn it around and become close to the 50 win teams they were over the last 2 years, I think we’re better. Theyre both missing facets that we’re not, we were missing a very good point guard that can push/control the tempo, run the offense and make plays for himself and teammates, we were missing a veteran leader that knows how to win, and a sharpshooter……. Bibby gives us all of that, which was the only thing we were REALLY missing.
I dont think we’ll be on Boston/Detroit level this year, those are the 2 standouts….. but we can compete at the Orlando/Cleveland/Washington/Toronto level this year, and the future is very bright beyond that (As it is for all 4 of those teams as well)…… we can definitely be an Orlando/Cleveland/Portland/Houston/Denver/Golden State/Toronto level team, on that tier as a very good team. Thank god.
The future is bright, and we got the missing link…… we’re gonna be VERY VERY VERY fun to watch!!!

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
EXACTLY WHAT WE NEEDED, WE WILL BE TAKING THE STEP FORWARD THIS SEASON THAT WE LOOKED SO CLOSE TO TAKING BEFORE CRUMBLING FOR A MONTH BECAUSE WE LACKED A POINTGUARD!!!!!!!!
Mike Bibby is COLDBLOODED. He is great at pushing and controlling the tempo, he gives us a veteran leader that knows how to win and has competed at the highest level……. he is the one thing we desperately needed: A VERY GOOD POINTGUARD! Another thing we really needed that he gives us is VERY GOOD PERIMETER SHOOTING, and another option in the clutch besides JJ. He will make his teammates better, take alot of pressure off of Joe Johnson, give us another playmaker, a pointguard that Woody will trust, an efficient floor general that does a good job running the offense…. and he can mentor Acie (Same type of PG in college that Bibby’s been in pro’s) if Acie is capable (Which I think he will be, but admit remains to be seen)….
THIS IS PERFECT! EXACTLY WHAT WE NEEDED, THE ONE THING WE REALLY REALLY NEEDED! AND WE DIDNT GIVE UP ANY OF OUR 6 BEST PLAYERS!!!!
THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!
Bibby-Johnosn-Williams-Smith-Horford with Chillz as 6th man and Zaza at the 5 off the bench and Law as backup pg…….
WOW THESE HAWKS ARE GONNA BE EVEN MORE FUN TO WATCH!!!!!! THIS IS GONNA BE REAL GOOD!!!!!
WHAT A GREAT DAY!!!
Everything is in place now, everything!!!!! PERFECT, we get a solid defensive/banger/picksetter/hustle player/garbage man that can run the floor as a center for next season as the 9th man in our rotation, and then sit back and watch them continue to grow………. GREAT STUFF!

Bibby-JJ-Marvin-Smoove-Horford-Zaza-Acie-Chillz is a very very good 8 man rotation…… Salim should get in as the 9th man, and Solo (Good defensive/rebounding/garbage man big that can run the floor) as the 10th man…… next offseason re-sign all of our core and add a Desagana Diop and a Kareem Rush to take Solo and Salim’s spots in rotation while our youngsters continue to develop and our rotation grows as a cohesive unit in our system with great chemistry and we are STRAIGHT!

The Hawks are so fun to watch, unstoppable in the open court, seeing them go 15-12to start with AJ playing just solid at Pointguard was so awesome, and the builing was finally starting to fill up as we made the step forward and hit our stride…….
Now that we have a very good PG that on his worst day will be better than how AJ was when he was playing well leading us to 15-12, we will be so much better. We added our missing link, our star pointguard….. that is so encouraging, we’ll be much better than we were during the 15-12 start, our youngsters are better now (Especially Horford inside) and continuing to get better, Bibby will take pressure off of Joe, we found our missing link and got a very good pointguard that will make everyone better………. that 15-12 start with big wins over Phoenix and Dallas and all those teams when AJ played well and stabilized our PG position taking away our weakness is just about 1/2 as good as we can be now with Bibby playing well and optimizing our PG position making our PG position a huge strength.

This trade basically bought BK another year. It also will be Woody’s death nail if he can’t get in the playoff’s this year and make at least a small showing.
If he does they both earn 1 more year which may not be a good thing. I just wonder if the Hawks sign Bibby to an extension or if they take his expiring contract next year, after ACL4 has a chance to learn under him for roughly a year, and trade him to someone else for a big man or a toaster oven… Happy to have Bibby but I wonder about next year and the Hawks intentions.
