Will someone please energize the Hawks?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If the season ended right now, your Atlanta Hawks would find themselves in a familiar place — at home for the playoffs.
This was supposed to be the season the Hawks rise up. They’ve shown signs of improvement, but coach Mike Woodson’s boys are about as consistent as Georgia rain.
They enter the All-Star break on a four-game losing streak, including Wednesday’s disappointing loss to (gulp) Charlotte, a team that hadn’t posted a single victory all month until the Hawks came calling.
Have you lost all hope of the Hawks making the playoffs? Are you disgusted with their recent play and ownership’s apparent lack of interest of improving the roster?
Express yourself, Hawk Nation! Maybe your voice will jumpstart this team.

Andre Miller?
Now that sounds like a good night story. Man we don’t need anymore silent players! At the point, we need some fire-man! We need some energy at the 1-spot.
Yes , Andre Miller is a fundamentally sound player, but:
How many teams has he played on already?
And what has his teams won?
This City is crying out loud for a - WINNER! We need Jason Kidd here, do what you got to do - but get him here!

At this point who cares, no trades, no sense of urgency, a coach who can’t coach, a GM with no eye for the RIGHT talent, and an ownership spending too much time worrying about being in court then what’s on the court. Another 1/2 season wasted on caring about a franchise going nowhere.

The Hawks cant win without a trade for a leader. Be it a point guard ( not a necessity) or a big man with leadership. Joe Johnson is not the answer. His shooting percentage is dismal, & his leadership parallels that of an invisible man. He should be traded for a big with a comparable contract.

Where to begin? First off, if no trades are gonna happen then the most simple solution to make would be to get a new coach. FIRE WOODSON!!! The Bobcats game showed a lot of the same problems we’ve been having all season. Basically play for 3 quarters and lose it in the 4th with the same plays to Joe Johnson. Woodson is so predictable and you would think that if the JJ isolation play has lost you multiple games this season then you would have to change. For example, Josh Smith against Detroit was on fire the entire game while JJ struggled, yet when the game was on the line who did we go to? Against the Bobcats, Acie Law finally came out playing, yet he was never seen in the 4th and overtime. Woodson is unable to see that sometimes you have to go with the players with the hot hand. I think JJ is a “good” player, but he is not a “star” or “leader.” He lacks any fire, intensity, or killer instinct and is best as a second option. If he continues to be our “go-to guy” in the future, then the Hawks will continue to be a mediocre team. I agree with Deacon Carl that he lacks any real leadership. We need a coach and the captain of our team to be able to pick up our team’s intensity at any time. We need a coach and captain who will get on other players and get the team going instead of allowing entire quarters of lifeless, lackluster play. We need a captain who actually wants to take responsibility for this task. JJ is not it. In conclusion, I think you keep Josh Smith and Al and build from there. Everyone else on this team can be traded. I’m sick of this Hawks organization being content with mediocrity. It’s time for change.

Hawks….Atlanta Hawks….this is my team, the team that I have been rooting for since I was six years old. I watched Dominique, and Rivers as well as Smith and Augmon. This team we are looking at today has more talent, youth, AllStar type talent at 3 positions than ive seen in a long time. Them guys have no leader in front of them, a guy who will stand in front of them as he teaches them the ropes of the NBA. A guy who will let them play to their abilities and dominate the game but pure will and determination. Killers smell blood but the chain is too tight around our necks and we cant reach the food hanging in front of us. Woodson has got to go and let Drew or Brown take the spot. They will be fantastic for the second half of the season. Players will feed off of that move and push them into a higher seed in the playoffs. Drew or Brown get a decent two year deal and let this team f*ing play.
Its the only move, Acie Law is fine they guy has great abilities. I can feel this guy playing as I listen over the radio on NBA.com almost every game. This team has to just play like they were on the playground growing up. Let them get the feel back in there game, more swagger. Smith under the right coach can become the most recognizable, amazing player the league has seen in years. A move valuable Lebron because of his defense. What doesn’t he block? We need him and Horford forever.
Please ASG get off of your fists and do something for once. I feel like the team is playing and the company is working fine, but nobody is at the wheel steering the ship. Are monkeys in office throwing feces at a wall making decisions? Just show us fans that you care…….
Can you hear me???

Joe Johnson trade was a good one, and we have the beast in the east with al hordford. Josh smith is our franchise at 22 and getting better every year! We let Deron Williams go, but i think if we picked brandon roy, then we would not be in the position to get Big Al and I think Al Horford will be the next ben wallace/duncan! That combo is hard to come by. But we did miss out on a franchise point guard! I know what Billy knight did by picking the best player available to get the most trade value. It only works if you trade those values for other important parts to complete your team. The players to keep is acie law (point guard) , joe johnson (shooting guard), josh smith (small forward), al horford (power forward). Other players are used for lead veteran point, 2 point shooter, and a solid 5 and a backup! We are close to being a good team, but we have to use all the lottery picks we had over the years as trade bait for rest of the parts. I have been a fan since “nique days” and I will always be a fan, but come on BK and Owners; let’s trade and make our team better!
ps. woody, you are doing a great job of training and teaching young players to develop their games, but the only thing you should do a better job is letting everyone be the go to guy rather than just JOE. This takes some pressure off of Joe and allows others to step up like acie, marvin, and joe. We might not win all games with them taking the last shot, but we have lost some games with Joe taking them too.

Yep. That about sums it up. I agree with the guy that said “What is there to discuss”? We know changes need to be made. I’m f@cking sick of talking them into the ground. Anyone who follows this team, knows there are many problems and that the roster and other personnel changes should be made. Period. We need new owners. Ugh.

Yes, I am very disappointed with the Hawks play this past week. Especially after winning 3 straight games. We need perimeter shooters, consistent point guard play and a better bench presence. Please front office make a trade. Why can other teams acquire international players who can shoot and play with intensity but we can’t. We have trade bait and if we are not going to play Salim then at least lets get someone for him. Its not like we need much but we do need something. So front office do your job!!!!!!!!

I hate to say this but FIRE MIKE WOODSON IMMEDIATELY!!!! Joe Johnson IS NOT an ALL-Star and he is not the same player he was last year…Marvin Williams loses the ball everytime he drives. Salim is THE BEST shooter on the team yet he rides the bench. FIRE MIKE WOODSON NOW!!!

Joe Johnson said before the start of the season that he needed HELP. But, the idiots of the ASG has refused to listen to him also. I’m sure the ASG cares even less of what we think. The only way they will listen is if we talk with our wallets and refuse to attend any games until there is a change. Be it trade or coach.

Ok, I give up! Investing yourself emotionally in this Hawks team is just an exercise in futility. I hope Steve Belkin wins in court so one owner can take over this team. At least then someone will be able make a decision to make a move that will get this team over the hump. The comeback loss to the Bobcats proved to me that this team is going nowhere fast.

The ASG probably won’t fire Woodson, but they should mandate that Woody START and PLAY Acie Law 30 minutes a night, from here on out. This team is going nowhere with AJ running the point. And we can’t afford for Lue to play one-on-one all the time either.
It’s time to see if Acie can get the job done as the starter, and as the PG on the floor at the end of games. He’s the only guy who can adequately defend the positon, and use his dribble penetration to either create for others, or score himself with a lay-up or short jumper.
Woody’s refusal to hand the reigns over to Acie as the main PG, may be the one thing holding this team back. The ASG or Knight should FORCE him to do this, by either telling him directly to do it, or trading away AJ and/or Lue so that he’ll have no choice to do it.

Anybody got Gary Payton’s number? Oh, yeah, you’re right, he’s too old. What about Chris Weber? Oh yeah, the rich got richer on the West coast. You know, I lean towards the whole “WOODY NO GOODY” crowd, but you have to consider, they did draft Smith when he was, what, 13? He has developed into an almost super star. As far as Drew and the other assistants, they had a hand in this whole mess, it’s not just mister Woodpecker. If you fire him, just sell your soul for Larry Brown. Or just put Nique where he belongs. And help me out guys, IF we got say, Mike Miller, where would he play? Would he start? Sub for Joe? Would he be our fourth small forward? We really need a big, just like about twenty other teams. I thought Billy Knight was a European expert. All he’s turned up is some dopey guy from Turkey that flops around like an old baby doll.

Any body notice the wierd three point guard set (Law/Lue/A.J) late in the Charlotte game? By the way, I’m sure he’s a great guy and all, but Salim is too short, and he is a turnover waiting to happen. Why so much love for Salim on these blogs? And why won’t this guy play Shelhead Williams, the “slum lord”? Give the guy a shot, hell he had a double double the night his girlfriend was in town. And I agree he needs to turn it over to Law. I’ll take the warts and all if this kid could bring us some energy. A.J./Lue has not been productive/consistent enough. And to everybody who says we need another go to guy, I think we can safely rule out Anthony (sure, I’ll RIOT!) Johnson- even if he has to blow two straight lay-ups. I think Joe’s points would double if he ever got a breather; it’s like the guy doesn’t even have time to sit down before Woodson panics and puts him back in. Three years and we don’t have a backup at the two? This guy would have to be some sort of Iverson robot from the future to play this many minutes with three people hanging off of him on every repetitive isolation play…

Do not trade ,do not fire but please do sign extension for josh smith and give acie law at least 30 minutes of play time. if this formula don’t work and we don’t make a play off then we should look for a new coach.
p.s joe should not be our go to guy , who ever is hot that day should get the ball for the last shout

The roster needs changing but there are huge coaching deficiencies. The rotation is inconsistent and often bizarre. The way he uses (or doesn’t) use Shelden is strange. Against Cats, he played 7 minutes, with 4 pts and 3 boards yet didn’t see the court in the 2nd half-why?. I guess we had to get Lo Wright PT. Where’s Salim? Why not start Acie-he’s a rook but Conley starts and so did Deron and Paul in their first years. Bottom line-poor coaching with no adaptability, a strange roster, and absent ownership-that’s a dangerous brew.

I read many comments here and some I agree with and others I don’t. This team is still a young team in progess. If anyone has noticed out west the Portland Trailblazers have begin to falter. They were at one time in the top 8 as were the Hawks in the standings as a playoff team, but now are out as is the hawks. But the hawks will make the playoffs. The hawks problems can be solved with some tweaking of the lineup and the reserves off the bench and along with bringing in a shooter. Eventually the hawks are going to need a big man in the middle, but let’s just say we do not make any trades for a big man, but can get mike Miller from the grizzilies. This in essence strengthens this roster by far. I love Marvin Williams and believe he eventually will be a star in this league at the 2 guard position once his ball handling skills gets better and he improves his shooting range from the 3-point arc and he will be our 2 guard of the future because we will not resign joe Johnson when his contract is up will be 30 years old and marvin 23. So right now move marvin williams to the bench, move j-smooth to the 3 and Al horford to the 4. Then let either Pachulla or Sheldon williams start. With mike miller on this team, now your bench becomes 5 players deep without starters having to play big minutes, and finally have a shooter who can give joe extended periods of rest. J-chill, marvin williams, Mike Miller, Sheldon or Pachulla, and Ty Lue off the bench. Starters would be AC, Joe, Josh, Al, Pachulla or Sheldon Williams, We move Lorenzen Wright and Anthony Johnson, and Salim for Mike Miller. This cuts down the players on the bench and gives a shorter bench for more playing time, and then lets just watch teams try and defend the uptempo outside shooting of the hawks. If you need to spread the floor with shooters which will give joe the opportunity to get to where he is comfotable on the floor, the lineup should go small, and look like this; Joe, Ty-Lue Mike Miller, Josh Smith and Al Horford, now you would have Lue and Miller to fire away from deep and the spacing for joe to operate because you can not double team joe and leave those shooters, and allow al and josh to just kill the offensive boards. This would only fix the hawks short term for this season but the roster would still have to be tweaked with in the future. But this will get them into the playoffs.

Of course we’re all disgusted with how things have gone. What were the Hawks heading into the New Year…16-14 or something like that? Now look. Pathetic. It’s pretty obvious to me. In my eyes, the only thing that needs to happen is Woodson getting canned and trading for Mike Miller. No Miller! No Kidd! Don’t need either. Because with Woodson gone, everyone will actually see what Atlanta got with the no.11 pick. And with Miller, that stretches the defense plenty. Those two moves puts ATL not only in the playoffs, but all the way up to the 5 or 6 seed (avoiding Det and Bos in 1st round)!
But since we’re talking about the “Spirit” and BK…we’re going to evaluate the current roster at the end of the season (no playoffs), and watch other sports until NBA season kicks off at end of 2008…then have high hopes yet again.

One more thing….well, actually 3…lol. I’m really looking forward to seeing Big Al in the rookie game. He’s more than earned it! Also, I hope JJ doesn’t see a single second of action in the All-star game. Not only does he need the rest, but the entire world doesn’t need to see his bricks, airballs and turnovers.
What I’m most looking forward to the rest of the season is the “Woody Woodpecker Show”. Preston has something there!!!

I’d rather the Hawks lose now…if only to get rid of Woodson and get in on the lottery. Rather pathetic isn’t it?
And one thing to add about Woodson…isn’t he selling out his players by saying that a trade of some sort is needed to shake things up? Coaches aren’t supposed to say things like that publicly! I think it’s a smokescreen - throw the players under the bus to help save his butt. Pretty low class.

Dean: The Hawks do not have a first round pick this year. It goes to Phoenix for Joe Johnson-no matter where the Hawks finish. The only reason the Hawks got their first round pick was that it was lottery protected. They need to make the playoffs to avoid sending Phoenix a lottery pick.
Woodson needs to be gone NOW. He should not go out West with the team. Just have one of the assistants take over for the rest of the year & then clean house. Get rid of the arrogant Billy Knight, the so called basketball authority! Do you trust him to make any decisions in the offseason? Mike Miller would help, but who will you trade for him?
By Allen

Woodson doesn’t know how to coach.
How many times have we been up a decent amount entering the last 6 minutes of the competition to see us pull the ball back out to half court and run the clock just to launch a highly contested shot 1 on 1 or 1 on 2 at the end of the shot clock. The problem is our Hawks aren’t coached to play team ball nor are they coached to put teams away. They are coached to give the ball to JJ and Lue.
I wish Woodson would take Basketball 101. The Hawks aren’t losing due to lack of talent. They’re losing due to lack of direction. We have a very solid core of 8 guys. If someone would teach our point guards to break up the court and our forwards to run the floor rather than try and bring the ball up themselves, we could be in the likes of West.
The Hawks have talent. They’re just selfish because they’re coached to be that way.

It boils down to the fact we need to change things at the top. I would fire Billy Knight go because he has assembled the mess in the first place. He finally got one draft pick right in Al Horford. However he is the architect of the mess and ultimately he should be held accountable. The next firing should be coach Mike Woodson. He is absolutely clueless. He has no idea how to substitute or create an adequate rotation. We have players sitting for days at a time before they ever get playing time. How does he expect the bench to have any rhythm. He has had four years to be very inept and we need a new face and voice. If he hasn’t fixed the team in four years he isnt’t very likely to ever fix things. I want a coach who will utilize everyone’s strengths. A coach that won’t have Salim and others sitting on the bench when we are getting blown out!!!

Trade for a true PG seals a playoff spot with 32 games to go or 33 if you count the “do-over” with Miami. This takes the heat off Joe (who’s said we need help) and gives some direction on the floor.

I have been a fan of the Hawks all of my life. I have been with them in the good and bad times. I and most other fans of the Hawks have been patient as they try to figure things out. My patience has run out. It is time for major changes. Changes in the front office (Billy Knight), coaching change, and roster changes. With the talent they have there is no reason for them not to make the playoffs this season. However, if they are to make the playoffs this season, those changes need to come now before all hope of making playoffs is gone. Shake things up!!

First of all a point is not the problem. For all we no Acie could be a ROY candidate but instead of trying to nurture what ability he might have Woody is playing two guys over 30 who just happen to have expiring contracts. We need a shooter to space the floor. Trade Marvin Williams and one of our expiring contracts for Mike Miller. And by all means let’s see what we have in law!
By Pete
February 15, 2008 1:14 PM | Link to this
I hate to see Marvin go but we need a player that gives us a perimeter look. I think Salim has fallen out of favor because of his lack of defense consistency buy how do you get that when you don’t play.
They may seriously need to consider letting them go. I know it is the man’s livelihood but he and Knight have made some bad decisions in games and drafts.
If the deadline passes without a move then we know what to think of this organization.

I’m starting to like Steve Belkin too. The ASG just need to fork over their portion of the team to him and let him run it. Billy Knight should have been fired for not shaking his hand. How immature is that? Momma didn’t raise him right! Anyhow, I can’t energize the Hawks more than the players on the team. They need a coach a vocal one and one with prestige and maybe a little bit of a chip on his shoulder. How about Sir Charles?

My best solution would be, play every player available, and run - run- run until the opponents tongue is hanging out. Rotate Hawk players in and out so that no one is so tired they can’t play by the end of the game. RUN - RUN - RUN!!!
Every player plays - Some more than others - sure, but NO ONE SITS!!!

Woody with his depressed face needs to get the Hawks going! The GM Billy Knight is the worst GM in Hawks history because we pick the worst draft picks *except Al Horford, he’s the man! I’m really disappointing in Marvin Williams. Williams takes like ALL the shots and misses more than 90% of the all! JJ was good at bobcats but is 4 PTS under last year’s season average than this year! Make the Hawks do some suicides to get them to pay attention instead of partying and drinking so much that they don’t become sober for a week! Cmon Hawks! Get back into the playoffs and kick some a*!

i can’t tell you how frustrated i’ve gotten with the hawks in the last few weeks.
woodson is one of the five worst coaches in the history of the nba.
Why would you not get out on the break and speed up the tempo? Why? Because your coach is mildly retarded and only knows one way to coach – grind-it-out Pistons ball. Woodson wouldn’t know how to transform the Hawks into a running team even if he wanted to. However, at least he realizes his own expectations.
Hopefully, the Hawks will make a midseason move and get a new coach (Fratello would be absolutely perfect). Until then, I’m gonna try to do a better job with my boycott.

I would tell them not to get discouraged that Woodson only plays a select few players. Maybe he will see the errors of his ways and start rotating you guys in.

FIRST OF ALL FIRE THE COACH, I AM NOT SPENDING ANY OF MY MONEY TO WATCH THE HAWKS UNTILL WOODY GETS FIRED. THE ONLY PLAY HAWKS HAVE RUN ALL YEAR IS A JJ ISOLATION AND HE IS JUST NOT GETTING IT DONE. FINALLY BILLY TRADE FOR A PG THAT PUSHES THE BALL. RIDNOUR OR HINIRICH ARE AVAILABLE. TRADE SHELDEN WILLIAMS FOR CANDACE PARKER.

Law does not start because Woody has to win now or he’s gone. If Law had been starting all year he would be a different player. Joe is exhausted by playing so many minutes because Woody has to win now or he’s gone. Joe would be mor effective late in the 4th if he played less. Shelly is not being developed because Woody has to win now or he’s gone. Shelly at the very least could have been developed enough this year to be traded for a young shooter, but no playing time means no trade bait. Marvin is exhausted because Woody has to win now or he’s gone. Marvin is worn out logging his minutes with his style of game. He has lost his jump shot. When he doesn’t nail that outside shot a few times a game the Hawks loose. He’ll never be a 3 point threat because he jumps to high on his shot. I love this team but WOODY AND KNIGHT HAVE TO GO. If BK does not trade for a 3 point shooter by the deadline BK is toast. Package Zaza.

Take a que from Dallas. Make a blockbuster trade. Obviously keep JJ, Josh S, Al H., Marvin, Acie and trade as many players as necessary to get one superstar at the pg. These ancillary players on the bench can be replaced. Even if you go to plan B and have to settle for giving up a little more than you want for potential star like Jarrett Jack or Hinrich or Ridenour/Watson in order to salvage the season.

This isn’t really about coaching - this is about the GM and lack of putting the pieces together. This team should have been a major player in moving a couple of talented young players for a center or established PG to make this a real team.
Instead they are going to start to walk away after their contracts expire. I know I would if I were them.
Fire Woodson if you want - it really doesn’t matter till you get a real GM in here and address the lack of a PG and center.
