Should Dogs be No. 1 in preseason?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just 30 more Saturdays until another college football season kicks off at Sanford Stadium.
What are the odds that Matthew Stafford and Georgia will go into that Aug. 30 opener against Georgia Southern as the nation’s top-ranked team?
As we await the start of spring practice, we asked a few experts who they had atop their early fall ballots.
Georgia? Southern Cal? West Virginia? Missouri? None of the above?
NEAL McCREADY, AP Top 25 voter (Mobile Press-Register)
“I’d vote Georgia No. 1 today for a myriad of reasons. First and foremost, the Bulldogs have balance on offense. Stafford’s mistakes are going to be fewer and more far between as a junior, and Knowshon Moreno has the talent and personality to build an offense around. Mark [Richt] has recruited at such a high level over the past few seasons, and that depth of talent — as LSU proved last season — ultimately wins out. I love Georgia’s schedule. Tennessee goes to Athens, as does Alabama, and UGA isn’t going to be intimidated by Florida anymore. [Southern Cal] has to replace a quarterback and there is scandal hanging over that program. Everything lines up for Georgia.”
ERIC HANSEN, AP Top 25 voter (South Bend Tribune)
“I think there are a whole lot of teams that could make a pretty legitimate claim to be the preseason No. 1. Having said that, I’m going to go with Ohio State, in spite of their underwhelming performance against LSU in New Orleans. I think [Butkus Award-winning linebacker] James Laurinaitis coming back was key. I think they’ll be the best defensive team in the country and will be much improved offensively. The Sept. 13 matchup at USC is going to have a lot to say about the national title race. Otherwise, the schedule is favorable, with Penn State and an in-transition Michigan team at home. Potential pitfalls are at Wisconsin and at Illinois.”
BRUCE FELDMAN (ESPN The Magazine)
“I like Georgia for No. 1 at this point. The Dawgs have an experienced starting quarterback returning, a star to carry the offense in Knowshon Moreno and an O-line that really matured as the 2007 season went along. I also think the boost they get from finishing the year with such a statement game will help drive guys to believe that bigger things are coming. The schedule doesn’t break well since they have a bunch of tough road trips but LSU survived a loaded schedule so I’m not ready to dismiss Georgia for it.”
SCOTT RABALAIS, AP Top 25 voter (Baton Rouge Advocate)
“My vote would be for USC. I covered the Sugar Bowl, and USC’s blowout of an Illinois team that was light years better than Hawaii was more impressive than Georgia’s win. Much more impressive. Hawaii was nowhere near as good as the BCS interlopers we’ve seen in recent years from Utah and Boise State.
“Edge to Georgia over USC with [Matthew] Stafford returning at QB, but the Trojans are oozing talent. Both teams have something to prove — Georgia getting routed by Tennessee, USC losing to Stanford — but I think the Trojans have proven their worth as a consistent national contender moreso than Georgia has. Would loved to have seen them play in the Rose Bowl — would be just as interested to see them meet in Miami in January.”
WENDELL BARNHOUSE, Fort Worth Star-Telegram
“I would give Georgia a slight edge over USC because the Bulldogs have an experienced QB coming back. USC’s non-conference schedule is considerably more difficult. As of right now, I’d probably lean toward Georgia as the preseason No. 1.”
LENN ROBBINS, New York Post
“I’m going Oklahoma. Sam Bradford is the best QB [Bob] Stoops has had, the defense will be loaded again, and I like the way the schedule shapes up. Georgia is No. 2. Mark Richt has quietly emerged as one of college football’s most consistent coaches. USC has more talkent than the Falcons but it’s so hard to keep that level of consistency. I can’t get over that Stanford loss.”
STEWART MANDEL, AP Top 25 voter (SI.com)
“Georgia [is No. 1]. Of the teams that finished high last year, they have by far the most key players coming back, with the possible exception of Ohio State, but there’s obviously reason for skepticism there.”
MATT HAYES (Sporting News)
“USC — the safest surest thing at this point. Georgia would be a close second, but the Trojans have loads of skill players on offense, and a deep, athletic front seven on defense. Whoever plays QB — Mark Sanchez or Mitch Mustain — will thrive in that offense. Sanchez played well while John David Booty was injured, and Mustain and wide receiver transfer Damian Williams were terrific in USC’s weekly Tuesday scrimmage — which is, in a word, intense.”
BRET BLOOMQUIST, AP Top 25 voter (El Paso Times)
“Well, not Hawaii. At the moment, Georgia, followed by Florida and USC.”

Who cares at this point? Georgia will prove themselves on the field next season and people will be forced to see how great they are by the way they play. Georgia will take care of they naysayers and sit on top when final poll comes out. Until then, much to do about nothing.

But the problem is Hansen is from Indiana. Of course he thinks a Big 10 defense can compare to the SEC. Man i’d like to see UGA go against OSU. We would destroy that offense and that defense is weak. We would score 35 on em easily. You can’t trust people from the midwest to have a fair opinion. There is so much bias in picking OSU #1.

It doesn’t matter where we start. The season will take care of itself. Last year we had so many questions to open the season, but not now.
Florida could come on, but at this point they have big question marks at running back and defensive tackle. LSU returns some impressive players too, and Georgia has to play them and Florida back to back on the road.
Georgia has great coaching to overcome the challenges we had the past two years. The biggest difference this year is more depth than I have ever seen at Georgia.

I notice that almost every “expert” looks at the schedules to try to figure out each team’s chances of going undefeated. THAT’S NOT HOW PRESEASON RANKINGS SHOULD BE DETERMINED. The #1 team should be whoever STARTS the season with the best team.

Maybe when Georgia has won some championships (in our life time)their fans will realize it really doesn’t matter where you start. I say they start the year high and get their rears handed to them again by the ole Ball Coach. No matter how much experience, Stafford is still inaccurate and will still make his share of bone head plays.
Three loses and a trip to the Outback Bowl in 08 and a chance to watch the Gators win another title in Miami.
By the way, nice basketball program! Maybe one day you can run with the Big Boys and have a complete athletic program. No wonder there is so much venom on these blogs towards Florida.

Hey, “Just Nasty and Mean”….Please interpret the spelling of “DAWGS” for me. As you peruse the dictionary, chew on this:
LSU has won two National Championships in the last (5) years. How many does UGA-ly have? Funnier still, since when is the school with one N/C in the last 30 years and (3) wins over it’s arch-rival in almost 20 - that would be Florida, not Tech - is the gold standard of SEC football?

Florida will be the most overrated team in America in 2008. They will cower to Georgia just like they did last year and it won’t even take any endzone dancing. South Carolina will get absolutely drilled next year. They will be horrible. Tennessee will put up a fight but no way do they win 3 in a row.
I think Alabama will surprise and LSU will still be tough despite losing some folks. Those two games worry me the most. No lie.

Never have I seen a group of people who carry themselves with such undeserved arrogance because of the fact that their favorite football teams - which they are not even a part of - lucked into national championship games thanks to choke jobs by USC and West Virginia, respectively. Hey dawg fans, if you didn’t notice, Florida is still playing in the SEC East. And they just loaded up again, this time with some of the best defensive talent in the country. And Will “The Thrill” Hill (a bigger version or Reggie Nelson) will be patolling center field next year. And Omar will be knocking Omar’s head off along with John Brown on the DL. These three will be probably the most exiciting freshman defensive players in the country (Brown a RS). Oh, and don’t forget Janoris Jenkins at CB (who completely shut down both Jones and Green at the Under Armour all-star game). So don’t count you chicks just yet. And you can bet the Gators will remember the run on the field incident and want some sweet revenge in Jax. My bet is they get it!

Hey, JM - typical UGA past-history, moronic banter. You guys ought to hook up with the Notre Dame fans. I guess you forgot about the 34-14 thrashing of UGA by LSU in the ‘01 SEC title game; or the 178-10 regular season win that same season in Baton Rouge. Lastly, when has Richt coached against - let alone defeated - Les Miles?

UGA will be #1 - great 30 more Saturdays of hearing the flea bags talk about this is the year. Finally - of course they have been saying the same thing the past 28 years, but what is another summer of bulldog hype.
I hope they are #1 and undefeated coming into the last Saturday in November. CPJ is going to finally knock the snot out of the bulldogs. GA will go on to win the SEC, but will be screwed out of MNC again much to this Tech fans delight.
Enjoy the summer of hype flea bags. Another question should be how many bulldog players will be arrested between now and kickoff? Anyone care to take a wager? I say the usual 6.

Bayou, it’s ironic that you would get upset at me for talking about the past when that is explicitly what your first post was about.
Anyway, it was 2005, Les Miles’ first year at LSU, when Richt and Shockley took him behind the woodshed. But I can see why you’d want to forget about that one.
And who cares what happened in 2003? The last meeting is all the matters as far as bragging rights go, and the Dawgs currently possess them over LSU.

First of all, Ohio State will get it’s reality check in week two when USC’s going to put up 40 against them, that said, the Dawgs will be number 2 to start the season because the “experts” will give the benefit of the doubt to USC. Which is okay because the Dawgs and Richt’s new energy boost will take care of business. Unfortunately I do see ONE slip up next year. I just can not see the Dawgs going undefeated. BUT if they do then they’ll be the best damn team ever(I just don’t see it). However no one will stop them if they take care of business plus the DEFENSE is the key factor for next year cause there are some studs coming back.

Just to clarify, the last TWO times we played LSU the tigers got whipped and badly. 2004 in Athens and 2005 in ATL. I think UGA outscored LSU by more than 50 pts combined in those games. And if UK, who beat LSU, could have made a chip shot field goal vs. UT we’d have been 5 point favorites in the SEC Championship game and it would have been THREE straight beatdowns. Luckily for LSU, Fulmer and the Vols had a lot of breaks vs. Vandy and UK so you got to play the 3rd best team in the East. But in any event the schedule dictates that you will get your beatdown in Oct. of ‘08. Enjoy it. Look for #24 in red, he’ll be the one running up and down the field at Tiger Stadium.

Next year I honestly see some of these freshman in SEC taking over for the Dawgs, Fla, ‘Bama I guess and LSU. However one match-up that will be sick to watch is A.J Green and Patrick Johnson from LSU in Baton Rouge. And also if UGA somehow makes it through Baton Rouge and Jacksonville undefeated then there’s no denying the Dawgs even if they have one lose before that.
And I don’t care what Florida has on offense, their defense is still going to kill them. You ignorant UF fans can’t honestly think a SEC defense made up of sophomores and freshman(even though they are good) pounding on offenses in the SEC.

The reason he was “not healthy” was because your brilliant head coach runs his quaterback 20 - 25 times a game (against SEC defenses to boot). He will do so again next year because you still will NOT have a running game. I will take our SEC freshman of the year (which happens to be our starting tailback) against your “PAC 10 TRANSFER” freshman of the year anyday and twice on Sunday (or should I say Saturday). Not to mention we will have Caleb King as our #2 (have you ever seen him play? I have and he is as good as Moreno). Not to mention Stafford will have a mature offensive line in front of him this year (we beat you last year with TWO TRUE freshmen and ONE REDSHIRT freshman STARTING on our offensive line. This will allow him more time to throw to an incoming TRUE FRESHMAN named AJ Green who many “experts” compare to a guy named Randy Moss (not sounding to good for the repiles so far). I will not deny that FL will have a very potent offense but what you are forgetting is that your defense was pitiful last year and your BEST defensive player (Harvey) opted to leave early to go into the draft. Will Hill is an outstanding safety no doubt but he will not have much help in front of him. Georgia’s gameplan next year will be to pound the rock with Moreno and King and establish the run and as soon as your SAFETYS start cheating up to support the run we run some play action and AJ and company will go over the top against your pathetic corners and it will be over. I hate to break it to you but FLA’s dominance over GA is over. Not saying we are going to go on a 15 of 17 run but it has become a RIVALRY again and right now GA has the upper hand.
And to all of you LSU fans please see the above.
Georgia should be pre-season #1 based on how the top teams were playing at the end of the year. And yes that includes the Bayou Tigers. But I hope that we are not. I would be happy with a #2 or #3 and EARN our number #1 come next January (unlike some team from Baton Rouge who started #1 lost it, had it GIVEN back, lost it AGAIN and had it GIVEN back AGAIN. Even though I was happy that an SEC team won the National Championship as I was last year believe it or not when Florida won it.
And to all of you USC fans and OSU fans. When you start playing in a REAL football conference (atleast the LSU and FL fans have that going for them) come back and start talking some smak. Until then just shut up.

I love reading all this crap every year. Everyone get all hyped up months ahead of time. Talk a bunch of junk and get 2 to 3 losses during the year and watch the N/C game like everyone else. So if you want to brag win your division, then win your conference title, then if you can do that…. brag. And wouldn’t it be funny if UGA did make it to the title game, and play Ohio State and OSU finally gets the better of a SEC team. LOL now that would be heaven.

LEN ROBBINS FALCONS????????? You my friend are an idiot.
I’m in no way a TECH fan,but that being said, the triple option is a fun offense to watch. So I look forward to seeing who they do this year. Georgia has far too much talent, depth and superior coaching to lose to them anytime soon. I just don’t see it happening. Our DT’s will shut down the FB and our speed abd tackling will shut down the option…so there you go.

Big_Money,
You might want to get your facts straight before you put em down. UGA has won a National Championship (1980). Which is how many USC has WON since then (2003 was a GIFT). I really do hope USC is number #1 pre-season and I hope they stay that way until we see them in Miami next year and then we will see what happens. My guess is you will not like the outcome.
And MVP all you can come back with is “Must all Georgia fans be morons”. You gotta have more than that.
17 of 22 returning starters from a 11-2 team. A potential Heisman candidate at running back. A junior quaterback who has played every snap since he has stepped on campus (USC’s two quarterback’s 1)Sanchez -alot of potential but unproven /hasn’t played at the D1 level, 2)Mustain who transfered (from Arkansas by the way)because he could not hack it(translation-was not good enough) in the SEC. I am not saying that USC is not a good program all I am saying is that you would not be all of that if you played in our conference. Let’s see, if you were in the SEC East for example. You would have to play in succession GA, FL, TN. You would also have to play someone from the SEC West as well (being LSU, AL, Auburn). Not to mention the second tier SEC teams you would have to play(SC, KY, MS, MS ST.) who would win 8 to 9 games a year in the PAC 10 (but maybe only 5 to 7 per in the SEC). You would be so beat up after running through that schedule year in and year out you would average one to two losses per year. Not to metion the fact that you would have to recruit against these same teams. Let’s now take a look at your conference. The toughest teams in your conference that you play are Oregon(who beat you by the way, and without Dennis Dixon they are nothing), Arizona State (who we will wax this coming year) and WHO else. Washington? UCLA? Washinton State? Stanford(a 40 point dog who by the way beat you)? I have to give you props with your out of conference (I believe you guys play OSU this year). My point is you do not play a tough conference schedule, and recruiting against these teams is a cake walk. You would not have that luxury in the SEC. I believe the best two teams going at the end of this past year were UGA and USC (would love to have played you guys in the Rose Bowl). I believe 08’ will be the same. I believe that USC and UGA will be #1 & #2 (only because there could never be two SEC teams in the National Championship game and USC will no doubt cruise through their cupcake schedule). This time next year let’s get back on the blog and discuss how it played out. I like our chances. Should be fun.

UGA/SEC football
Who post 70 and 50 points on Arkansas back/back years? Name me a SEC team that did that.
Who post a 23-0 shutout against Auburn in their backyard?
The Trojans! That’s who did it.
Auburn went undefeated with basically the same team we waxed the year before.
You going to be facing unfamiliar territory come this fall. USC has dealt with this type of media hype now for the past five years.
Let me put it to you this way. Somebody in the SEC is scared to play USC in a non-conference game again. They have tried to call teams in that conference to schedule a home/away series, but they can’t get some schools to call them back. I wonder why.
Now, we all know they are not calling Arkansas and Auburn since they have played them in the past six years. Now, we all know, they are not calling teams like Miss. State,Old Miss, Kentucky, Vandy or South Carolina. That’s not USC style. They want top notch competition. That leaves, UGA, Tenn, Fla, LSU, and Bama. I’ll let you pick and choose which teams that won’t return USC calls.

I don’t want to see the Dawgs as the first No. 1 team of the season. That is the kiss of death. The 1st No. 1 ranked team almost always gets knocked down. I hope the Dawgs start off somewhere in the lower Top 5. That way they are in easy striking distance for a long season. And don’t forget the Dawgs have a very difficult schedule to play next season. No matter how good they might be they’ll still need good luck to win the SEC or a National Championship. No team ever wins it without good luck. There are just too many excellent teams, especially in the SEC.

Whoopee that Ohio State has all their players coming back. They have showed the last few seasones that they can’t play on the same field with the SEC. Georgia should easily get the nod but unfortunatly it’s almost impossible to run the table in the brutal conference they are in….

throw the doggies a bone, let them dream big pre-season dreams. Then when the season begins and after they lose to Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina or Auburn reality will set in.

Hey, “Just Nasty and Mean”….Please interpret the spelling of “DAWGS” for me. As you peruse the dictionary, chew on this:
“LSU has won two National Championships in the last (5) years. How many does UGA-ly have? Funnier still, since when is the school with one N/C in the last 30 years and (3) wins over it’s arch-rival in almost 20 - that would be Florida, not Tech - is the gold standard of SEC football?”
Um… let’s look at LSU’s record vs. UGA over that same stretch.

Jamie Caverts we are bragging, not whining. You are whining about the Dawgs because we have beaten Tech like a rented mule for the last 7 years and the beatings will continue. All you can do is run your mouth and that has no credibility because we own losers like you.

All the pre-season talk about who’s number one is nothing more than hype. You can brag, whine, state facts…whatever you want. None of this matters. The only thing that matters is what happens on the filed next year. I don’t have a crystal ball and doubt that any of you have one; at least not one that actually works. So save your emotional quips till next year.

Hey Trojan Fan,
Once again you California people do not pay attention. I did not say SC wasn’t good enough to beat teams from the SEC. It is easy for you to play the cupcake teams you play week in and week out in the PAC 10 and then play “a”(singular) game against a team from the SEC and win. If you read my previous post you will see that I was saying if SC played in our conference week in and week out like we do you would not be as fresh & injury free as you are based on the D2 teams you play in your weak* conference. Your best players would be tired, beat up and maybe injured. That goes along way in determining if you go undefeated or if you lose one or two games. It is virtually impossible to go undefeated in the SEC based on the facts that I mentioned above. Not to mention that once you win your division (which I can hear everyone right now saying UGA didn’t even do that this past year. You are right, I agree. We should not have been considered for the National Championship this past year because of that fact) you then have to play the winner of the other division to win the conference title. For instance, GA(East) has to play LSU(West) this coming year in Baton Rouge (who by the way won the National Campionship this past year) . After/If we win that game more than likely we will have to play them again in the SEC Championship game to win the SEC Championship. It is hard enough to beat teams like that once much less twice in the same year. USC DOES NOT HAVE TO DO THIS. IF USC WAS IN THE SEC THEY WOULD HAVE TO AND THEY WOULD NOT BE AS SUCCESSFUL AS THEY CURRENTLY ARE PLAYING THE TEAMS THEY CURRENTLY PLAY.
Back to the point of UGA not winning our division/conference this past year. And for that reason everyone on this blog says we should not be optimistic about 08’. I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS PAST YEAR WHEN I SAY WE ARE GOING TO BE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS NEXT YEAR. I AGREE THAT WE DID NOT DESERVE IT THIS YEAR BECAUSE WE DID NOT WIN OUR CONFERENCE. THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH O8’. YOU BASE YOUR PROJECTIONS ON WHAT TEAMS ARE BRINGING BACK AS FAR AS RETURNING STARTERS FROM LAST YEARS TEAM. THE DEPTH OF YOUR TEAM WICH ALLOWS YOU TO FILL IN THE SPOTS/RELOAD. THE INCOMING RECRUITING CLASS (ARE THERE ANY IMPACT PLAYERS THERE). HOW THE TEAM FINISHED THE PREVIOUS YEAR AND YOUR UPCOMING SCHEDULE(WHICH BY THE WAY FOR UGA IS BRUTAL THIS YEAR. BUT SO WAS LSU’S LAST YEAR). I AGREE THAT WE AS GA FANS ARE VERY PROUD OF OUR TEAM AND WE TALK THEM UP ALOT EVEN IN PAST YEARS WHEN THEY WERE NOT AS DESERVING. I HATE TO BREAK IT TO ALL OF YOU HATERS OUT THERE BUT WE HAVE REASONS TO BE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THIS YEAR AND FOR THE FUTURE (SEE THE REASONS I LISTED ABOVE) AND WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT IT. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT OUR TEAM. AS I STATED IN AN EARLIER POST I DON’T WANT TO BE PRE-SEASON #1. AS LONG AS YOU ARE IN THE TOP FIVE AT THE BEGINNING (BASED ON HOW VOTING DETERMINES THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP)AND YOU TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS YOU WILL BE THERE IN THE END. AND UGA WILL BE THERE IN THE END. AND LIKE I MENTIONED IN AN EARLIER POST I THINK WE WILL PLAY SC IN MIAMI AND UGA WILL WIN. NUFF SAID.

Heck, I’m a life long Nole, and I’d even pick FSU to beat Ohio State if they faced them this year. UGA’s schedule is brutal, and if they survive it, they should definitely be no. 1. The predictions from these sports journalists are about as accurate as the exit polling data for the 2008 election. Enough said.
