Having fun at Andruw’s expense

Do you think the Braves are taking the ‘voluntary camp’ thing a bit too far when Andruw Jones, the former outfielder turned L.A. Dodger, shows up to work out at Turner Field?

Yeah, we know Andruw still lives in the area, it wasn’t his choice to leave the team (as far as we know) and he’s still buddies with most of the players, but would the Yankees let Boston ace Josh Beckett use their facility if he lived in Manhattan in the off-season?

From all indications, everyone was all smiles down at Turner Field today and we’re just having a little fun at Andruw’s expense. Let’s hope he used the batting cage behind the visitor’s dugout (just kidding).

What do you think?

It pre-season unofficial..no harm done..no worse than playing golf..once the regular season starts..its a different ballgame

No harm done……He just wants to get in extra practice at flailing away weakly at those low and away pitches —- so that he will be ready for the season.

I don’t have a problem, he needs to get his strikeout stroke down here first so he can continue his ways out west. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!

WHO GIVES A FLIP? the man for better or worse the man still loves the “A”. so what? he’s the best defensive centerfielder we will ever see even if he struck out more than black man at a barmitzvah, so chill out what’s the big deal.

Josh Beckett wasn’t a Yankee for 12 years ! ! ! How is that even close to the same thing.
Is there nothing more in the sports world to discuss?
Perhaps that little scrimmage out in Arizona this weekend?

I think were happy to see him go, for a so called local baseball hall of famer, he sure didnt prove anything in 2006 or 2007. Only thing he proved was that he could 30 lbs in a season. Bye Andruw were not gonna miss you!

Don’t worry the Braves will sign A Jones again in 6 or 7 years. The same as all the other X-Braves they bring back. ex. Glavine, etc. The Braves love recaps.

It’s not like the Braves were trying to re-sign Andruw after last season, so if the man doesn’t hold that against the team, why not? If he were playing for the Mets, that would be an issue.

By SpringFeaver

No big deal. What I am concerned about is when Andruw goes to the Dodgers who have a real hitting coach. If he listens (which I doubt he will) he could become really good. Oh never mind, this is Andruw were talking about.

DID ANDRUW DO SOMETHING WRONG…NO..HE GAVE HIS HEART AND SOUL FOR THE BRAVES. NOW, IDIOTS LIKE YOU ARE TRYING TO DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO BE NEGATIVE TOWARDS HIM. PEOPLE LIKE YOU HAVE NO LOYALTY. YOU REALLY DON’T HAVE ANYTHING TO WRITE ABOUT …DO YOU?

AJ better practice his swing because last year he couldn,t hit the side of the barn.

Brian-AJ didn’t want to stay to bad according to the money he asked for. The Dodger greatly over paid for his services. Most ML Teams were taken back by his contract. Thanks John for letting AJ go.

rfsbkr, He gave his heart and soul for the Braves? What Andruw was you watching? out of shape, fat,not coachable, swinging for the fence, when you needed him most you got a K after K after K. and that blank eating smile. Thank God he is gone.

First of all, I have absolutely no problem with Andruw practicing with the boys. But quit saying he wanted to stay. If he did, he would have and signed for less like Smoltzie. When this became apparent to JS that Andruw didn’t want to do this, he told Andruw to look elsewhere. Let’s face it, would you think the Braves would be smart to pay someone $36.5 million for 2 years after they had a season where the player batted .220, with less HR’s and RBI’s than he had in the last several years? Don’t get me wrong, I am gonna miss Andruw’s presence in the outfield, but anyone we put out there will be a better hitter than .220. Kotsay will hit .280 and led the majors in outfield assists over the last 5 years. And we paid $2 million for him. Frank Wren has learned from the best, JS! Good luck Andruw.

No biggy! If Andruw wants to chill with his friends that cool with me. This practice wasn’t anything special in which Andruw could interfere with the play of the Bravos. Plus I am sure he asked Bobby if he could go before hand. He is a big boy.

Ya’ll are the ones taking this too far! Who cares if he was taking some BP at Turner Field? I mean he still good friends with all the players, he was just having some fun. He is still a Brave at heart.

Go to LA! Your not a Brave anymore and should not be allowed to use the facilities. If I change jobs can I go to my old employer to use his fax machine, copier or maybe make a few long distance phone calls?

The Braves should not allow this, it is a joke!

andruw is a punk, and cant hit anything but a fast ball. ship him out of here along w/ Furcal so they can both swing from the hip night after night and bat below the mendoza line. good riddance

I once witnessed Andruw Jones use his hat to gently waft a fart into Jeff Franceouer’s face while Jeff was talking to McCann in the dugout. When the smell hit him, he jumped up, and the entire dugout shifted to one end. Andruw just sat there laughing… basking in his own filth.

What a teammate!

He can hang with the Braves, he can eat at the Varsity, he can pound the glass at a Thrashers game for all I care.

But Turner Field is the office of his former employer, not his current one. It’s not LA Fitness, or even a private hitting facility that anyone can join. If you quit your job to take a higher-paying one, would your old boss like it if you came in to use the computers and the phones every now and then?

Get Andruw out of there period! He chose to not be a part of this team anymore. He also chose to be pig headed and not listen to his coaches. He also chose to not run out groundball after groundball. I for one was tired of his act. Its a crime that he is getting $17 million to hit .220 in the major leagues. Good bye Andruw….don’t let the door hit you on the way out!

bama—— first, you must be kidding me. This fat,out of shape centerfielder has was gold glove after gold glove. Who else on the Braves have won that many. How many games has he saved for pitchers. How many times has he led the team in HR’s and RBI’s. Does he play hurt, yes. He may not be the best hitter, but a least he is there for his teammates everyday. What other everyday player can you count on….Chipper. I think not. How many time has Jeff F. struck out. Before the season is out, you and the Braves will miss Andruw. Kotsay is your answer. Be serious.

By Keb Mo

February 1, 2008 6:47 PM | Link to this

My question is: What if Andrew got hurt while being on-site with the Braves. A stray ball hits him in the head or a Julio Franco swings and misses and the bat happen to hit Andrew? Maybe Smoltzie throws one high and tight! Maybe someone hits a line drive and due to Andruw’s weight problem he is unable to get out of the way. Maybe he slips on a banana peel left by some player after lunch. Do I smell a Boros lawsuit against the Bravos

By Bama

February 1, 2008 6:51 PM | Link to this

rfsbkr, I’d take Chipper over Andrew anyday of the week. AJ couldn’t hold Chipper’s jockey. I knew you would come back with the Gold Glove BS. That’s a Joke. Look at Wright winning last year 3b with 20 errows. That’s the good old boy system. Yes, he was good cf but not 17 million good. He might have played everyday but player couldn’t always count on him when they need him . He didn’t run out ground balls etc and BC let him get by. ON and on you could go, give it a rest.

Andrew has his own batting cages at home and surely has spent hours and hours reinforcing improper muscle memory thus his problem. Too bad he just could not listen and learn as he could have be phenomenal not just periods of greatness and the best defensive CF we’ve seen. Hopefully he can turn it around but not at our expense.

Atlanta has no loyalty: the man could not have been a better face for the Braves’ organization. We should bow down just for the mere fact that the greatest centerfielder of all time graced us with 10 years. Come this new season, when he’s been givin the time and patience to fix his problems, the old Druw will be back and Kotsay will be on the DL.

By cwartillery

February 2, 2008 11:02 PM | Link to this

Pre-season is no big deal for him to be here. Players do it a lot these days since they are traded so much and know so many coaches and players on other teams. I suspect that once the season starts, it won’t happen again.

As to Andruw’s worth, he chose the money over the Braves. I’m sure they would have given him something in the neighborhood of 8 million per yesr but what he wanted given the last couple of years was out of bounds for a mid-market team like the Braves. Defensively he earned it but offensively he didn’t do the things he should to ask for the big dollars. I like Andruw as a ball player as much as anyone but I wouldn’t have paid him the big bucks. And I found it very frustrating that he wouldn’t/couldn’t change his approach at the plate. It’s almost like his only desire was to break his own home run record so he swung hard in case he hit it. Too bad when you have that much talent and don’t get the most from it.

By Darren

February 3, 2008 1:04 PM | Link to this

I think it is obvious that the Braves made a mistake in letting Andruw go. You could tell that by him showing up to the workout that he still wants to be a Brave. He would have given us a considerable discount to stay. The bad trade and excepting the heavy backloaded contract of Mike Hampton is why he is gone. I love Johnny S., but that was the worst trade he has ever made.
