Clemens gives his side of story
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Roger Clemens has finally given his side of the story after being accused of taking performance-enhancing drugs in the Mitchell Report. And in true Clemens form, he has responded with the fire and fury of a …. Rocket.
Clemens was defiant and emotional throughout his taped interview with ‘60 Minutes’, which aired Sunday night. Clemens has also filed a defamation suit against former trainer Brian McNamee, claiming the statements given by McNamee to baseball drug investigator George Mitchell were “untrue and defamatory.”
Later today, Clemens is scheduled to appear at a live news conference in which he is expected to answer more questions on the subject.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you believe Clemens or McNamee? What do you think will happen at today’s news conference?

Mike Wallace looked like Larry King the way he threw those softball questions.
Clemens will file a defamation lawsuit this week and then use the pending litigation as an excuse not to testify before Congress.

I think Roger is hedging his bets against new allegations and/or another witness. His answers, “It didn’t happen,” aren’t real solid denials, and they don’t touch on the modified statements he made last week about injections occurring that were nothing more than B12 and painkillers.
The whole thing just seemed shifty, which I think has much more to do with his answers than the slice-and-dice editing done by 60 Minutes.

Let’s see: one needs to cooperate with federal investigators because of legal violations, and one has never been in any significant or minor trouble with the law. Until some hard evidence comes about, other than a convict’s statement, I will have to go with Clemens. At least with Bonds, he admitted (“unknowingly”) taking steriods.

Unfortunately, we live in a world with lives by the creed of “guilty until proven innocent” instead of the other way around. I have always liked Roger Clemens and I think he is an exceptional athlete, but it is very hard for me to believe that he did not take steroids. I have a hard time believing that his trainer would lie on him for no reason when he runs the risk of going to jail. The fact that he was injected with B-12 makes me look at the situation in a negative way. I hate it for Roger Clemens because even if he is innocent, so many athletes have given sports a bad name by lying and only coming clean when they are backed into a corner. This list is way too long. I think that his feelings are more hurt becuase he had no idea that his trainer would divulge this supposedly confidential information when he thought they had such a bond of friendship. It is almost like a brother or sister running to your parents and telling on you when you trusted them not to. If he is innocent, I hope that he is vindicated, but if he is guilty, he should go ahead and admit it now before he does more damage to his legacy.

How come Wallace did not ask Roger if he ever did visual verification that what the trainer was butting in him was in fact B12 or Lidocaine? Is it possible Roger did not know this guy was shooting him up with illegal stuff? Might explain why they are both standing their ground.
Otherwise, I want to believe Roger and will give him the benefit of the doubt until I hear more.

Sounds like Roger is lying and trying to save his reputation. I think they should go after him and arrest his sorry a**. He needs to get treated the same way as Barry B. as he has broken numerous pitching records which will now require an astrisk beside them as well. You have a HOF pitcher and a HOF batter that both appear to give MLB a black eye. Wonder how many more are “cheating” the sport.

Not a chance. I don’t believe anything in baseball anymore. It’s the American way. Lie, lie some more, and claim innocence even when the mountain of evidence is sitting in front of you. Clemens just sounded like a guy that has been coached by a TEAM of PR experts and lawyers. That’s why he didn’t come straight out and deny all this when the story broke. He had to go to all his advisors and get his story straight.

I have to be honest and say we ragged Barry Bonds and called him a thug and every negative name we could apply sterotypically because he denied using steriods and we didn’t believe him or even want to believe him. Now we know that wasn’t the real reason we degraded him at every opportunity. I read the comments about Clemmons and he’s in the same boat for doing the same thing, but the remarks are so much kinder. What kind of society are we? Everything still revolves around skin color. Now that Clemmons, the golden boy has been caught up - folks have had to lay off Bonds to avoid looking like the hypocrites and race baters they really are. What a sad world we live in still!

Clemens was a great pitcher, but I always considered him a thug for throwing at people who couldn’t throw back at him. He is very competitive, but I think he also loves publicity and certainly wants to go to the Hall of Fame. He knows that these charges might prevent that. I think that he knowingly used steroids, and it will be interesting to see how this legal action plays out. He may end up pouring gasoline on the fire.

He should sue the He11 out of them, unless they can prove it or he tests positive they need to stop with this witch hunt. If a few players took it to help with injuries and other ailments I have no problem with it. Look at pro Wrestlers, there is a problem, not the same here. So many movie stars and athletes, and others take way worse then steriods, like growth hormone and other new technoloigies, why not go after them. Arnold took it so why are we not after him too?

Let’s wait until all the information has been disclosed under oath.
I know that many of my fellow Braves fans are anxious to have dirt stick to Clemens so that Maddux looks better.
But, our system is built on requiring that the accused be proven guilty. He doesn’t have to prove his innocence. And, this should apply to Clemens.
If, on the other hand, he is found guilty by a substantial weight of the evidence, punish him severely. No H of F.

Roger is obviously lying and we would all do the same thing. I think he is lying, but do not blame him at all for taking steroids. It was the thing to do then and everyone was doing it. It was MLB’s fault for never stopping it and not making HGHs illegal until recently…I would still vote for him in the HOF if he was honest now. No difference b/t him & Bonds.

ed, the reason McNamee is credible is because Petitte admitted to using HGH, just as McNamee said he did. McNamee has no reason to lie about Clemens. In fact, if he is found to be lying, he’ll go to jail. Clemens has many reasons to lie, and up until now, wont get in any trouble for doing so. Clemens doesn’t have the look of a steroid user like Bonds or the other obvious ones. I could see him being innocent. Talk is cheap and getting cheaper all the time. Maybe a few lawsuits would tighten this cheap sensationalism down some. People are going to jail because of “eye witnesses” only to be found years later innocent by DNA disclosure. I noticed most of the prosecutors are never remorseful when this happens, some even insist the guy is still guilty. It becomes a contest between the accused and the prosecutor and I don’t really mind that because it is in a court of law where both sides have rights. What I hate is the press becoming the judge and jury to sell their newspapers or air time. Mayor Campbell operated a scam for years and not a word from the press, even as one of its kind was having an affair with the crook in Chicago; we have a war in Iraq that is loaded with serious accounting problems that barely reaches the radar and corporate America pretty well runs Washington. I can remember a press that discovered Watergate, stopped Viet Nam, and chased the President of the United States out of office. All that could be going on this very moment we wouldn’t know about it with this present group, but if in some leaky basement of a baseball stadium a troll gives negative testimony on a superficial subject that if is for real or not has little to do with daily life the press is wide awake. I hope Clemens sues everybody in sight until it is not worth writing about such nonsense without consideration that the guy may be innocent and the press goes back to worrying about worldly matters or in the case of sports remember it is entertainment leaving criminal investigations to the experts like the constitution envisioned it in the first place.

This steriod issue in baseball is such a joke!!! For years it’s been a don’t ask don’t tell policy. Owners, managers, players, etc. all had to have known but just looked the other way. It’s only now that baseball industry is trying to clean up.
Personally I think that the focus is on Bonds and Clemens because lets face it they are both a*******holes. Come on we all know McQuire juiced and most likly Sosa too, but they are both media darlings so we are less criticle of them.

I said he was a major user when the Topic first hit the fan with Bonds and Mcquire!
A pitcher has the most to gain from use and wanna talk about head size getting bigger as many point out with Bonds! Roger didn’t even Bulk up his Chest and arms and got so much bigger!
The sad Irony is Bonds got crushed by the media and was instantly demonized, yet Mcquire and now Clemens get gracfully questioned. I hope the truth comes on one way or another, but I’ll be very supprised if he even goes through with suing the trainier! I also bet he doesn’t appear before Congress, as he will come up with some well concocted lame excuse.

When will Baseball and Congress focus on the real Villians?
No matter how you slice it Bud Selig is the real problem! He and the owners! They routinely sent players to play in Mexico for Winter (Steroids) Ball… why? to better market the product (increse the teams bat power and pitching speed) you want proof, simply look at how many players played there in the mid eighties and early ninties only to return to the majors the next year to have there breakout seasons! Also notice the Ticket sales during the Mcquire Sosa Homerun Battle! not to mention the league apparel sales. Selig is both a charliton and a liar! did I mention Hypocrit?

I don’t care what your skin color is; what I care about is that these people were looked up to by alot of kids, even their own, and they chose to take shortcuts in order to extend their “five minutes of fame” and what they did is wrong. How many young kids who have looked up to Roger, Barry and others are going to believe short cuts and illegal substances are the “thing to do.” They all need to admit the truth and then be made, somehow, to go across country giving speeches to these kids and telling them - we were wrong and THIS IS NOT the way to accomplish anything. When a man or a woman can’t look into the camera as if they were standing in front of you and making eye contact, then I don’t put much faith into what they are saying.

I agree that Selig is also partially at fault for looking the other way and not requiring tougher testing sooner but even if he had would the players union have let him? I mean there were contracts to be had based on artificially enhanced production and ridiculously high amounts of money to be paid to star players. The state of baseball today is the result of greed being subsidized by greed … the greed to win at all costs. The greed of the owners and the players and their representatives have desecrated the game at the expense of the fan and ultimately now the game’s records that we hold dear. I don’t know if things would have been any different but I can’t help but wonder how the late Bart Giamatti would have handled this problem. Me thinks he might have done a better job than Selig … who should have never held the job to start with because of his position as an owner.

Barry needs better representation - he and Clemens both shoulda stayed tightlipped and plead the 5th or admitted to taking HGH only for faster healing - Giambi, Pettite and Rodney Harrison did it right - if you know the story is gonna sound like a bunch of lies (which it does)and the court of public opinion is gonna balk (which they have), just dont say nothing and put the burden of proof on the accusers

I watched the 60 minutes piece with my father in law who is a retired NYPD detective, and he is well studied in the field of Kinesics (the study of body language). He said that Roger Clemens’ “performance” last night was awful at best. His whole posture when they were sitting down, to the way his eyes moved when he was asked certain questions said more about his guilt than the Mitchell Report could have ever done. At least Roger could have taken an acting class or something before the interview, because he looked ill-prepared for what he had to know was coming. He stated in the interview that if he took steroids then he would not be able to pitch because of his muscles being stiff. That’s BS, It make sense now why Roger was not required to practice everyday with his team the past couple of years, if he would have done so his muscles would be so stiff he would have undoubtedly torn something. I’m gong to be honest here, I played college Football at the Univ.of Western Michigan, and on more than one occasion I took performance enhancing drugs. That’s one of the down sides to them is that your muscles tend to be stiff, which prevents you from practicing on a regular schedule. So with that said I see why Clemens and his agent were so attanment the last couple of years to have a clause in his contract where he was not required to travel nor practice with the team. Clemens is guilty as sin in my mind, and I doubt highly that Clemens will show up to the congressional hearings on the 16th of this month. He looked guilty enough last night as it is.
P.S.
People threw Barry Bonds under the bus with such fervor when it was alleged that he used steroids, but why isn’t the same fervor being applied to Clemens? A lot of people know Clemens is lying, but a lot of people also give him the benefit of the doubt. That is a blatant double standard. At least Barry Bonds was still going to be a Hall of Famer even before he got juiced up, can’t say the same for Clemens

Roger Clemens vehemently denying any use of steroids is as hollow as:
1) Marion Jones saying the same thing.
2) Rafeal Palmerio saying the same thing AND shaking his finger at Congress in disgust.
3)McGwire refusing to commment because he “-did not come here to talk about the past..”
4)Sammy Sosa (who was a part-time Pepsi spokesman btw) all of sudden not remembering how to speak English after 20 years in the U.S.
5)Or as hollow as when Martina Hingis spoke out in anger about how she never did cocaine and then admitted to it all.
We as a society have got to stop making “celebrities” out of people. Stop putting them on a stand, just stop idolizing these folks. Most of them have more issues than you do, can’t you see that? If Mike Vick had been Mike Wilson, NO ONE would give a rat’s azz about those dogs. He got caught, then lied, then like the rest of them tried to spit out a heart-felt apology. If he was really known as Orenthal James, we would have never heard of OJ Simpson. Roger Clemens may have money and fame, but he is humanly flawed as everyone else and he will, like others, continue to lie about it until he is cornered and exposed. No, I do not believe him or any of the rest. How can you when some many have already got caught lying? Do you remember how admant Marion Jones was? What about her apology? Sickening. How about Rafeal Palmiero? Instances like that have taken credibility from everyone that’s left. EVERYONE. I can no longer believe these athletes when they deny using those drugs. All the ones that have said that so far have been made out to be liars so why believe any of them?

I believe Roger. I, myself, have to have nerve blocks for my osteoporosis and I don’t know what my doctor gives me, other than it’s called Kenalog. Many illnesses require the use of medications containing steroids, but necessary use, such as I had to use when I had an e-coli sepsis infection in my kidneys several years back, saved my life. I do think, however, that a lot of athletes are given steroids by doctors, trainers, etc, unknowingly and this is where much of the problem lies. I do believe Roger, as well as Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa.

Hmmm….
Circumstantial evidence + Barry Bonds= a guilty thug and a asterisk next to all his achievements
Circumstantial evidence + Roger Clemens= Let’s give him the benefit of doubt/I’ll believe him until proven otherwise.
What is the missing element with these two equations?
Palmeiro states that he never used steroids in from of Congress and shortly thereafter has a positive test for steroids. No indictment.
Bonds denies using steroids in grand jury testimony and continues to deny usage and has doesn’t have a positive test for steroids and gets indicted for perjury.
I never believed Bonds and I never believed he was the only using. But I also knew that if certain other athletes were accused of cheating, there would be no way in HELL that the same level of criticism would be applied. That ‘60 Minutes’ interview was a soft peddled joke.
Save the comments about Bonds being a jerk as the reason. Clemens is no angel and he has received a much more balanced level of coverage.

Real Big … I hear what you’re saying … but you’re misguided. Decisions have consequences and if Roger did indeed take steroids then his records and awards … even his reputation should be appropriately tarnished in some way. (i.e. no HOF, asterisk in record book, criticism in the court of public opinion, perhaps even prison and/or fined if he commits perjury) The lack of perfection in everyone is NOT a legitimate reason not to condemn wrongdoing in anyone. If you think so please re-read the words of Him for whom you propose us to live.

Clemens told Wallace he had no idea what was contained in the Mitchell report prior to its public release, but Sen. Mitchell has stated he let each of the players in the report know they were named in the report prior to its public release so they could have an opportunity to respond to the allegations. If Clemens lied about this, why should we believe anything else he said? Great pitcher, incredibly hard worker, less than honest though.

I think that Clemens is guilty as sin. My question is why did Roger wait 3 to 4 weeks to say he was sueing his trainer? Why did it take Roger so long to figure out a way to clear his name? You know, years ago Bo Jackson (Bo knew baseball very well) was falsely accused of possible steroid use and Bo faced his accuser and told him that he better retract those accusations or he would be sued right away. Of course, the accusations were false, and Bo’s accuser retracted his lies immediately so as not to experience the wrath of Bo Jackson. WHY DID IT TAKE ROGER CLEMENS ALMOST FOUR WEEKS TO DECIDE THAT HE DIDNT DO STEROIDS OR TO TRY AND CLEAR HIS NAME. BECAUSE AN INNOCENT PERSON WOULD HAVE IMMEDIATELY SAID THOSE WERE LIES THAT BRIAN MCNAMIE WERE TELLING AND HE WOULD HAVE TOLD THE WORLD OF AN IMPENDING SUIT BUT NOT FOUR WEEKS AFTER THE FACT. What Roger is doing now is damage control. Roger’s trainer has claimed in the Mitchell Report that he injected Roger over 30 times with steroids or HGH. I believe that IT MUST HAVE happened since it happened so many times, and how on earth could Brian McNamie be mistaken. Roger is going down like Bonds will and both will be on the outside of the doors to Hall of Fame begging to get in.

“Can’t we all just get along”. Why don’t we put an end to all the millions of dollars being spent on investigations involving steriod usage. Okay, just do it the way drugs like crack, marijuana, testing is treated. That is, effective with the 2008 Baseball season—-here are the penalties you will receive if caught using steriods during random testing, etc. Forget the pass, let records stand, and move forward. Was Clemens, Bonds, and the other 250 players lying or will lie? Hell yes!

My question has always been, how much of an edge does ingesting steroids in baseball give? For example, if it makes Barry Bonds stronger, does his hand-eye coordination sharpen also(you can’t hit homeruns without it)? How about the speed on the swing of the bat?

Clemens has always been a “dirty” player…throwing at batter’s heads (not just brush-back pitches), throwing a broken bat with jagged end at Piazza, etc. He has always demonstrated a “do whatever it takes to win” attitude even if there is a chance of killing or crippling someone else. He is lying now in an effort to save his own a*! He really ought to be still in prison for attempted murder after throwing the bat at Piazza but, in fact, didn’t even get kicked out of that game.

Clemens is lying because his best friend Andy Petite has admitted HGH use when they both were teammates. If Petite is guilty, why would Clemens be innocent? Petite didnt want to face any jail time so he figured he better come clean right away. I think Clemens would be best served by stopping the lying and admitting to steroid and HGH use for numerous times that he did it. Clemens should polish off all 7 of his cy young trophies and return them to Cooperstown so that Curt Schilling will finally be declared a Cy Young winner by default.

Brian McNamee was supposedly one of Roger’s best friends. Roger is saying that Brian was forced by the investigators to lie to get his name out there.
WHY?!?!?!?
If that was so, why are we finding out that the others he implicated are actually guilty by their own admission. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, why wouldn’t McNamee come out with a press conference saying that the investigators had told him to give them Clemens. IT MAKES NO SENSE!
I really want badly to believe Clemens, (I’m sick of what steroids have done to the sport), but the circumstances make it extremely tough.

During the past twenty seasons, the Rocket has been blessed with 7 cy youngs firmly notched in his belt. It’s one thing to say you’re innocent, but entirely different when you try to intimidate people. It’s soooooo funny that Clemens shot off his big mouth and told everyone to vote for Bush on GMA during the 2004 elections. Bush and the Rethuglicons rail about personal responsibility and frivolous lawsuits. Yet, Clemens, the Bush boot-licker, refuses to take responsibility and files a frivolous lawsuit. So apparently these ‘values’ don’t apply to the Rethuglicon faithful; just to everyone else. Typical Rethuglicon hypocrisy.
If Clemens has evidence this person is lying, then just publicly humiliate them and move on. He’s not had any endorsements withdrawn or been required to pay back any money so he’s not been harmed. His frivolous lawsuit is only to harass and intimidate this person.
Oh, btw. Clemens is guilty as hell and a liar. I guess Michael Vick isn’t the only ethically-challenged professional athlete.
When you vote Rethuglicon, you vote against your own best interests. And Roger Clemens is living proof.

Lets see, why would Clemens just now file a law suit against the guy who ratted him out? Why not when it first happened? I have a theory on this one. He was about to be called in front of Congress to testify, and now since he has a pending lawsuit he is not allowed to talk to anyone including Congress about what is going on. Seems like a ploy to buy some time so he can figure out his next step. Why else would he go through all this.
