Jackets fall in Humanitarian Bowl

Georgia Tech couldn’t stop Fresno State’s high-powered offense in Boise Monday in the conclusion to the Yellow Jackets’ season on a down note.

Tech did attempt a fourth-quarter rally after falling behind 34-14 as Calvin Booker came off the bench to play at quarterback. Tashard Choice also watched the end of his career from the sidelines.

While the Chan Gailey era is over and Paul Johnson’s tenure is about to begin, how disappointing was this game? Do you think it was hard for the Jackets to get up for this game? Or does Fresno State deserve the credit for its effort?

What do you want to see Johnson address above all as he settles into his new job? And how optimistic are you about the future of Tech football?

Is Singletary ‘the right fit’?

Hall of Fame linebacker and San Francisco 49ers assistant coach Mike Singletary has expressed an interest in the Falcons head coaching job.

He interviewed with the Falcons for the job that eventually went to Bobby Petrino, who quit on the team this season after 13 games. He was also a candidate for vacancies in Dallas and San Diego last season.

Singletary told the AJC he didn’t, “just want any coaching job … It has to be the right fit.”

Is he the right fit for the Falcons?

Gimme 5: 5 degrees of the BCS and UGA

For Thursday’s day fun list of Gimme 5, Kenneth Massey, one of six men whose computer rankings are part of college football’s BCS formula, gives us five facts his machine spit out about Sugar Bowl-bound Georgia, including the likeliest matchup had the BCS existed in 1980 — and it doesn’t include the Bulldogs:

1. Sugar opponent Hawaii beat Washington, which beat Cal, which beat Tennessee, which beat UGA.

2. This is UGA’s second-highest BCS finish. Following the 2002 season, the Bulldogs (ranked 5th in the final rankings) also went to the Sugar Bowl, beating Florida State.

3. If not for an early-season loss to Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks, UGA would have played in the SEC championship — essentially the national semifinal.

4. Hawaii averaged 47 points a game, but put up only 17 against a mediocre Alabama team last season.

5. Had the BCS existed in 1980, UGA may not have played in the title game. Due to strength of schedule issues, a likely matchup would have been Florida State vs. Pitt.

What do you think Georgia fans?

Parcells passes on offer

You just knew it was too good to be true, right?

The latest disappointment to befall the Atlanta Falcons comes in the form of Bill Parcells’ decision not to accept the job of running football operations for owner Arthur Blank?

Does Parcells’ retraction surprise you in the least? Or are the Falcons doomed to hiring whatever NFL also-ran is willing to come work for this woeful organization?

Ex-Braves named in Mitchell Report

David Justice and John Rocker are among the former Atlanta Braves players named in the Mitchell Report, linking them to steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.

According to the report, both players purchased human growth hormone (HGH) and both were no longer with the Braves at the time of the purchase.

Other former Braves listed in the report include Gary Sheffield, Paul Byrd, Kent Mercker, Mike Stanton, Denny Neagle, Todd Pratt and Matt Franco.

Does the Mitchell Report revelation change in any way your perception of these players and their accomplishments as Braves? Are you surprised at who is named and who is not? What’s your take?

Did Tebow deserve to win?

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow won the Heisman Trophy Saturday night becoming the first sophomore or freshman to take college football’s most prestigious award.

Tebow is the first major college player to run for 20 touchdowns and throw 20 TD passes in the same season.

In his freshman season in 1980, Georgia running back Herschel Walker led the Bulldogs to an undefeated regular season — setting records with 1,616 total yards, a rushing average of 146.9 yards, and fifteen touchdowns — and a Sugar Bowl victory over Notre Dame and a national championship. He was third in the Heisman voting. In his sophomore season, Walker compiled 1,891 rushing yards, which remains an SEC conference single-season record. He ran for more than 100 yards in eleven games as a sophomore. He came second in the Heisman voting.

It wasn’t until his junior year that he won the prize.

Who was more deserving of the accolade as an underclassman?

Tech looks to Navy’s Johnson

What’s your reaction to Georgia Tech’s hiring of Paul Johnson?

Do you think he’ll be able to adjust his offense to emphasize more passing?

Given his successful stint at Georgia Southern, will this help in his in-state recruiting for the Yellow Jackets?

Rate-A-Bowl: Game vs. Lame

Our own Mr. College Football, Tony Barnhart, isn’t mincing words when it comes to which bowl matchups he’s big on and which are so bland that they make watching the “One Moment Please. This Channel Will Be Available Shortly” cable’s out blackscreen seem thrilling by comparison.

We’d like you to check out Mr. CFB’s list and tell us which bowls got game and which are laaaaaaaaame.

NOTE: This forum is NOT a continuance of the “Did UGA get dissed by the BCS?” convos currently in progress on ajc.com/sports. Please keep the topic to Bowls With Cool vs. Bowls With Drool.

Do Dogs deserve the shot?

The top two teams in the BCS standings, Missouri and West Virginia, lost Saturday night.

Should Georgia, fourth in the BCS, get a shot at playing No. 3 Ohio State for the national title, or should LSU move ahead of the Bulldogs since it won the SEC championship game?
