Jackets fall in Humanitarian Bowl

Georgia Tech couldn’t stop Fresno State’s high-powered offense in Boise Monday in the conclusion to the Yellow Jackets’ season on a down note.

Tech did attempt a fourth-quarter rally after falling behind 34-14 as Calvin Booker came off the bench to play at quarterback. Tashard Choice also watched the end of his career from the sidelines.

While the Chan Gailey era is over and Paul Johnson’s tenure is about to begin, how disappointing was this game? Do you think it was hard for the Jackets to get up for this game? Or does Fresno State deserve the credit for its effort?

What do you want to see Johnson address above all as he settles into his new job? And how optimistic are you about the future of Tech football?

I’m glad the Jackets at least did not give up and came back to make it a little more respectable. However, our defense stunk! They just did not have the fire and looked totally outmanned. Maybe it was because Tenuta was on the sideline instead of up in the box.

I’m hopeful for next year, but have a feeling that this is going to be a tough transition period…..

What a fitting end to a pathetic era. How long will it take to recover from the damage Gailey has done to our program? We were not out manned on the field. Out schemed? Out coached? Out hustled? Yes, yes, yes. My hope with Johnson is that he will not put up with this crap. Sweep out the whole coaching staff. Good bye, Jon T, and thanks for the memories, and don’t let the door hit you in the @ss on the way out.

Any coach that will leave his team with a game left to play has no character and is unworthy to be a head coach somewhere else. Tech just got another loser, this one left his Navy boy’s to lose their last game while he was going on to “bigger and better”.

Okay, where in that stadiumm was Chan hiding as he coached the team? Hahahaaa

I wonder how long it is going to take to wash the stench of Chan off the program. The best thing I saw during today’s game was the shot of Paul Johnson a minute or two after the great play calling just before the end of the first half. It appeared he saw what had just happened and he didn’t seem too impressedl. I am a bit skeptical about the new coach but I really hope he proves me wrong, year after year. GO TECH!!!

Figures that a Ugag fan would jump in first…do y’all have anything better to do? Also, thanks Ugag fans for taking the time to hang your disgusting “G” flag in the endzone. For a team that wins way more than it loses, y’all sure are paranoid.

I was pleased to see the fight in the eyes of Nesbitt, Booker, Dwyer, and company. The frustrating thing yet again was the D’s inability to stop a passing attack. Tenuta’s scheme is old. If the O line can buy enough time, the quarterback will find an open receiver. See games against Ugag, BC, VT, Wake, etc. Our corners play way too soft. Please, Coach Wommack, teach the corners how to jam at the line to disrupt the pass patterns…then maybe the blitzes will work. Also, why is it that Bennett and the offense look “all-world” on the opening drive and then go in the tank until the 2nd half? Coach Johnson, we need consistant play all 4 quarters.

**573 total yards for FSU - good defense Tenuta!! It is embarrassing enough that we even go to this bowl and play on that silly blue turf - but to lose! Sorry, no pat on the backs for this team and coaches - they all should be ashamed! Our name drug even deeper in the mud and the embarrassment of the ACC conference. The Georgia fans will have a field day with this one as they should. Bad enough we lost to Fresno St a few years ago in a bowl - again! How unbelievably embarrassing and humiliating.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, now we have to endure 3 months of a pitiful basketball team that is dead last in the ACC - and mark my words, will finish there too. I can honestly say, we are once again ‘Losersville’!**

Looked to me like the Defense knew that Coach Tenuta would not be yelling at them when this one was over. They played uninspired football.

Dwyer, Booker, Donley and even Nesbitt looked good. I think offensively, we will be o.k. next year. Hopefully our new DC will be able to do something with the defense. Morgan Burnett played a pretty good game, especially for a true freshman.

I am very excited about next year. Win or lose, I think we will be entertaining to watch. Chan’s teams were not entertaining to watch.

We are loserville. But there is a new sheriff in town who (a bit late, I admit) did toss the town drunk out. And it was that Braine idiot who extended CPH’s contract after we stumbled into the championship game a few years back - not DRAD. Things were much worse when I darkened the campus in the early 80’s. Things can be much better. Do some reading on the option offense. It looks tailor made for the type of athletes we can get at Tech. I have hope that the rudder is turned and the ship will follow.

Choice - Great respect my friend and thank you for your “give all” attitude. Save that knee for the pros. I would have done the same as everyone on here would have if in the same position. The Falcons could use you. Good luck in your career with the NFL. Returning Players - Heads up guys! Every building has to have a foundation. Looks like you have a good architect coming in. Clearly, Tenuta showed why he isn’t “head coach” material and why he wasn’t hired to replace Chan. He clearly needed to be in the booth to see what the crud his pitiful defense was doing as running the entire team was too much of a distraction. He was sooo overmatched. And what’s with using THREE quarterbacks…and all clearly stunk (time to recruit a real one). And why was the ACC’s 2-time leading rusher not being given the ball every stinkin’ down in the second half to help them get back into it. Instead, Tenuta puts him, in his last GT game after a stellar career, on the sidelines?! What a joke. The Jackets got outcoached, outschemed, and outplayed..again. I hope Johnson kicks them in the butt if they try and play like this under his watch.

Nothing will change at Tech. About the best Tech could hope for is the formation of some sort of new division made up of Ivy Leage type schools and maybe a some of the better div II schools. If that could happen and Tech could move into that new division, then maybe we could get back to our winning ways. The glory days are gone for good. There’s not a coach on the planet that can bring us back. We can be winners again, but not against the tallent, money, and recruiting we face. I mean sure every now and then we could beat a down Georgia or Auburn or VT, but we’ll never be able to consistantly defeat these superior programs. Fresno State! Give me a break. Let’s get out of this while we can and start filling those seats with GOLD.

Tech is a joke and a disgrace to the ACC as well as the state of GA. You have a new coach but will never have a dominate team. You might win 10 games once every ten years. If Johnson does win don’t you think he will get a better job somewhere else? UGA has beat you 7 years in a row and their coach is just getting started. It must suck to be a Jacket. Go Tigers

Well, another embarassing bowl loss. The defense obviously did not want to be there, the offense was pretty much as inconsistent as it has been all year, and Tenuta really didn’t show me a lot as either a head coach or a defensive coach. In his defense, he was playing for a school that did not want him as its head coach, but I don’t think he wanted to be there either. We cannot pass, we cannot catch, and we cannot defend the pass. Whatever the reasons, we are a bad team, badly coached, and apparently badly motivated. The people who say that Corso and the AJC love to bash Tech need to remember something - if what they’re saying is true, it’s not bashing. We got the bowl we deserved, and today we got the result we deserved. If we want better bowls, and if we want to win better bowls, we certainly have to show more than they did on the field (and sidelines) today. An old school coach like Bear Bryant would probably tear up the three-deep chart and revoke everybody’s scholarship and start all over.

And lucky us, now we get three months of basketball from a coach who has no idea what the term “offense” means. A coach that could not get out of the first round of the tournament with two first round NBA draft picks.

Hang_50,

Graduation rates are important, and as a Georgia fan, I hope they improve. It is bad for the students.

However, 55% for a school such as Tech shows that this problem is bad a lot of schools.

The fact is that on the football field there is no comparison. You are talking to a bunch of fans who frankly (or unfortunately) do not care what happens to the athletes after their playing time is over.

I wasn’t surprised at all by what FSU did to Tenuta’s defense. Look back at previous games the past couple of years. Anytime Tech played teams with balance offenses, the defense gets blitzed. The D-line can be neutralized, the linebackers when not blitzing are very average (even Wheeler), and the D-backs play too soft and really cannot tackle. Tech’s QB’s never develope. Do they even have a QB coach? Please don’t tell me Chan was the QB coach. I’m looking forward to the triple option. Anything would be better than what we have now.

What a fitting end to the Gailey era. Probably the most puzzling football game I’ve witnessed in years. What was the game plan? The defense looked like it was playing on skates. Not the usual Jon Tenuta pressure scheme, looked more of a bend-don’t-break scheme except we broke way too often. Non-existent pass rush and terrible tackling.

As puzzling as the defense was, the offense was even more puzzling. Has Taylor Bennett told the coaching staff that he intends to transfer? I understand using Nesbitt, but why go to Booker with that level of commitment?

I hope Coach Johnson was watching some of his future players and their level of effort today. During his interview in the booth, he said that everyone starts with a clean slate. Surely he was watching some of his returning Juniors and Sophomores.

Hang_50……..You are talking graduation rates from years ago. Over 70 percent of Dawg seniors will graduate this semester. Not sure how many more will graduate in the spring. I think that in itself shows Richt is concerned and shows commitment to players’ education. Get your facts right before you start talking sh*t. To the rest of the Tech grads…. You got a good coach coming in and he should put some respect back in your program. You finally have a AD that will not accept mediocrity. You have some good young talent. The reason Tech has no constistancy with coaches or a winning program is because only a small alumin base supports the team. Quit saying that you are a small school and your graduates are living all over the world. That excuse is lame and frankly is old. It all falls on the Alumni. If you want to win, quit your b*** and support your program. You could not even keep Bill Curry. Any coach that shows any resemblance of winning will leave unless you give him your support. It is a total disgrace to have a major college football team in the south’s largest city and not be able to sell out a small stadium on a consistant basis. Ticket deals are offered and your athletic department has endless promotions enticing ticket sales. Get off your butts and spend some money. Support your team win or lose and you might gain something. The last good coach you had was Dodd. A good coach and a wonderful man but that was in the past. It is time to live in the future and if you want to compete then you have to offer your undivided support. Tech does not travel well. Too many tight fisted tight wads. Don’t you think the Bowls see this? I admire the loyal Jacket fans. I know you have to put up with a lot and your loyality should be commended however 90% of your alumin and fan base is fair weather fans and does nothing but b*** about UGA and how academic superior they are to everyone. Watch the Sugar Bowl and you will see some support. Hawaii is bringing in by the ton and I am sure the Dawgs will be well represented. Time to go party. Everyone have a safe night and Happy New Year.

While some of you state the obvious that Fresno State is a “WAC” school and how could an ACC team look that bad just ask Oklahoma about playing a “WAC” team. While GT is NOT OU,FS has a chance to do something very special next year. This team is VERY young with three of our best playmakers(1 true fresh, 2 sophs) unable to play today. If they run the table and go undefeated next year they will have a chance to play in the BCS title game next year. You think I’m CRAZY huh?! Go check the schedule! Road games @ UCLA, Kansas ST., Boise St.& Toledo. Home games against Wisconsin, Hawaii & Nevada. It should be good enough with a little help from some of the big boys losing a game or two. SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE JACKET FANS.. 1) To Hang-50—You guys at Tech try to recruit the same people they do at UGA. If the guys at UGA are only graduating at a 29% rate and GEORGIA AND TECH are recruiting the same guys, how are Tech’s guys graduating AT higher percentages? IF Tech IS so much harder academically than UGA, then how do you explain the graduation rates BEING HIGHER AT TECH THAT AT UGA? There is not an athlete that Georgia signs who would not qualify and be gladly taken at Tech also. Get off the academic high horse…. 2) TENUTA is a great coach. He has proved that over and over. He was the TECH darling a month ago, now you TECH fans want to trash him. Posts criticizing TENUTA by TECH people are POOR indeed.
3) You people have no real loyalty to TECH or anybody, and I am afraid PAUL JOHNSON, who again is a fine coach, will find that out only too soon. STAND BEHIND THE NEW COACHES, AND NOT WITH A KNIFE IN YOUR HAND. TECH’S FAN BASE MUST STAY BEHIND THE COACHING STAFF, BECAUSE WHEN YOU START COMPLAINING, THE PLAYERS HERE IT AND THE DISGRUNTLED ONES START TO MOAN ALSO. IT IS CALLED MORALE. BE WITH THE TEAM, WIN OR LOSE. SUPPORT, AND QUIT ALL THIS SUNDAY MORNING QUARTERBACKING. SURE, ITS EASY TO GET IT RIGHT ON SUNDAY MORNING. GET BEHIND PAUL JOHNSON AND STAFF AND STAY THERE. IF HIS OFFENSE HAS WORKED EVERYWHERE ELSE, WHY WOULD IT NOT WORK AT TECH? IT IS THE SCHEME AND COACHING, AND HE KNOWS HOW TO DO IT. HE IS ALSO NOT A NICE GUY WHEN THE PLAYERS ARE NOT FOCUSED ON WHAT IS GOING ON. THEY WILL LEARN IN A HURRY THAT IF THEY DON’T DO IT JUST LIKE PAUL WANTS, THEY WILL STAND ON THE SIDELINES OR GO TO ANOTHER PROGRAM TO PLAY. HAD A SON WHO PLAYED FOR HIM AT GA SOUTHERN, AND IT WILL BE COACH J’S WAY OR THE HIGHWAY.

Embarrassing! Embarrassing! There was a severe lack of effort by the players. If you do not want to play in a crummy bowl, do not show up. Let another team go. Fresno State is a good team. Pat Hill is a great coach. Congratulations to the Fresno State Bulldogs. They were glad to be there and played to win. Georgia Tech laid down.

Things are just not very good on the flats. I guess we have to give DRad some time, but his report card so far is not exactly stellar. The bowl game would not have been much better with Gailey, his pro style coaching never meant anything out of division races, anyway. I hate Johnson dropped Tenuta, I think that is a bad move, especially when Tenuta had chances to leave about anytime he wanted, and this is what he get for loyality? The hot seat starts for Johnson, and I hope he can do more than the wishbone, as that has been well defended for decades, it is old and will not work in developed conferences, but then againg the ACC is going backwards, just like GT. Now we have to go through another under performing basketball season. Hey, I am an optimist most of the time.

To all concerned….I have been following Paul Johnson when he was at Ga Southern and have been at many of his practices and games at NAVY. I am now on board with the Jacket Nation to watch him turn around the mess he inherited. He will do it and he will do it with academic integrity. There is a clause in his contract to support that notion which gives him a healthy bonus for doing so.

As for the academic numbers, read the report from The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida, which recently released its 2007-08 NCAA Bowl Academic Progress Rates and Graduation Success Rates Study on Dec 1, 2007.

Simply stated, UGA was the worst in terms of graduating athletes of all 64 bowl participants for this year.

1 - Navy 2 - Boston College 3 - Air Force 4 - Rutgers 5 - Southern Miss 6 - Auburn 7 - Wake Forest 8 - Cal 9 - UConn 10 - TCU

Soothsayer - Don’t even try and justify UGA’s poor graduation record. They are using athletes and turning their backs on them. It’s pathetic.

And NCWrekfan - who are you foolin’? No one here believes for a second that you are a Tech fan. First of all, real Tech fans know that Chan was not Rad’s hire; so when you critizise him it reveals the poser that you are. Also, your negative comment on the ACC also shows you to be a poser. How sad for you.

Nesbitt and Booker looked better than expected. Dwyer looked great. We will have SOME players coming back next year. But it is going to be a difficult transition period, Jackets, so brace yourselves. We do have much reason for hope and optimism, but we better get used to the possibility of a losing/rebuilding period coming up.

Coach Johnson is one of the best play callers in college football today. Unless you have watch Navy play the last six years, you really can’t understand what you have in Coach Johnson. Before the Rose Bowl a few years ago ,Pete Carroll was talking about Texas and Vince Young and their option game. He was quoted as saying,Texas reminded him of the great Wishbone teams of Coach Royal,”Those teams were unstoppable, PLEASE DON’T RESURRECT THE WISHBONE” Ask any college defensive coordinator if he wants to play against the wishbone and they will tell you the truth. Good times are coming Tech fans, and watch out UG! Look for great days ahead

Meanwhile, back to the game that was just played….(I get real tired of the constant GT/UGA drivel).

Can anyone give a well reasoned answer as to why ACC teams even go to this game?

It can’t be a money maker. It certainly does nothing to boost the prestige of a program. The players obviously have a hard time getting motivated to play. Only the staunchest fans with nothing better to do would travel to Boise, ID to go to the game. It even hurts my eyes to try and watch it on TV (no, high-def doesn’t do anything to improve the blue turf).

The ACC should break the tie-in with this game.

The only good thing about this loss is, the Chan Gailey era is over!!

Fresno looked quicker and stronger than our guys. No pressure from the defensive line, and no blocking by the O line.

Tenuta’s defense sucked, his offense sucked, and I am glad he is going bye bye. Time for a new beginning. The D was a one trick poney, blitz. If the blitz didn’t work, we were screwed. Lets build on a firmer foundation next year, blitz less. This giving them short passes is not the way to go. I saw three defenders stop behind the cowboy tight end and wait for the him to catch the ball. At least one of them should have moved between the cowboy and the quarterback, but no, they all froze to wait on the ball. crap

gtne80, you are absolutely correct and I think the ACC is actually trying to look at other bowls. I had preferred we decline the invite to this one as it was a lose-lose situation. Can’t inspire his own defense to play UP for him one last time. Benches the starting quarterback (who may be starting for the last time) over one play. Thankfully we didn’t hire him as the head coach. JON T, we have an old Southern saying, you run what you brung. Taylor Bennett lead the Jackets to seven victories this year. After driving them their only score of the first half, you bench him. He deserves better treatment than that. It’s called COACHING. It’s apparently something you can’t do at the HEAD level. You have been a great defensive coach, but the program that paid you quite well deserved a better effort than you gave.

You delusional Jaller Yackit fans really amuse me. You all think that the mighty ACC should drop it’s bowl tie in with the manufacturers of TY-D-BOWL and switch to another bowl game. I suppose you expect the Rose Bowl to dump the PAC-10 or the Big -10 if the mighty ACC wants out of Boise, maybe the Sugar, or Fiesta would be willing to drop the weak sisters from the SEC and Big-12 in order to cater to the huge numbers of GIT and Duke fans who hit the road and support their awesome teams with thousands in attendance for all road games. You clowns need to take off the rose colored glasses, quit smoking so much weed and realize that the ACC is in Boise, San Jose, and Podunk because except for Clemson, VT, and FSU your fans don’t travel and bowl games are primarily to generate money for the local economy of the host city not to stroke the ego of a few NATS fans who are living on the “tradition” of a program that except for five or six seasons has been an afterthought on the national stage for the last half century. Be glad that the ACC has a tie in with Boise because if Yankton, S. Dakota ever decides to sponsor a bowl game you may rest assured that their first offer of an exclusive tie in will be to the ACC.

The usual propaganda is that any bowl is a good deal because it gives the coaches extra time to work with returning players. That BS didn’t apply for this game once Gailey was dismissed.

The only perceptible reason for Tech to go to this game is to keep our meaningless “continuous years going to a bowl game” streak alive. Is that useless stat worth dragging a bunch of unmotivated coaches and players across the country for an embarrassment?

If Boise wants to have a bowl, it needs to be one with regional interest (like the one’s in Detroit, Charlotte, and Nashville). Let them sign up with the Mountain West, the WAC and/or the PAC10.

The ACC needs to step up with some stones and hold their tied-in bowls to the order of ranking. Tech (7-5, 4-4) should have been in San Francisco and Maryland (6-7, 3-5) should have trudged up to the blue carpet. The ACC is a crap conference for allowing this kind of stuff to happen. But $$ talks and BS walks. Tech will always get the crappy end of the stick when it comes to bowl choices against the bigger State universities. It’s up to the ACC to keep things in line and they won’t do it.

What is wrong with John Tenuta. Why not play choice (the best player on the field) when it is his last game. Especially when they losing and making a come back. Does Tenuta not understand that you have to have linbackers to win ballgames. He has the best blitzing team in the nation and his linbackers were in pass coverage. Fresno was getting 5 yards before they even got close to the linebackers.

I’m glad he’s leaving. Bring in a coach that makes changes when something dont work.

Fresno’s Pat Hill will play anyone anwhere any time and usually woop em. I’m assuming that CT has a new job already lined up because the performance by his D yesterday was definitely not conducive to a successful job interview. What the Hell happened? How can you have five weeks to prepare and that’s the best you got to show for it? The offense wasn’t much better either. Inconsistent as usual. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought Chan had something to do with the game plan and prep? Oh that’s right, he hired these guys didn’t he? I guess it’s too much to expect six years of uninspired mediocrity to dissipate anytime soon? However, you would have thought the players would have had enough pride and sense of Ramling Wreck tradition to take even a game like the Humanitarian Bowl seriously? What an embarrassment. With the exception of a few stand-out players like Booker, Dwyer, Nesbitt, Donley, and Burnette showing up to play, it would have been a lot worse. It’s games like this is why we get crucified on the blogs. Tech fans need to quit defending the indefensible, obsessing about what Dawg fans say, and take our punishiment in stride. Right now, we suck and there’s no getting around it. It won’t significantly get better until CJ has had time to implement his program and install the keys to winning - desire, sacrifice, discipline. We led the nation in sacks, yet came up with a goosegg in that category and pretty much the entire defensive effort. Maybe Tenuta running the team distracted him too much from running his defense the way he has all year. the best play of the game was when Brooks evaded the blockers and scrambled to get a punt off. We didn’t even play up to our own level. Hopefully this was entirely due to the distractions of the coaching transition. The biggest contribution Johnson can make next year is to get his team playing consistently up to their potential, and not blowing games they should win.
