Gimme 5: 5 degrees of the BCS and UGA
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For Thursday’s day fun list of Gimme 5, Kenneth Massey, one of six men whose computer rankings are part of college football’s BCS formula, gives us five facts his machine spit out about Sugar Bowl-bound Georgia, including the likeliest matchup had the BCS existed in 1980 — and it doesn’t include the Bulldogs:
1. Sugar opponent Hawaii beat Washington, which beat Cal, which beat Tennessee, which beat UGA.
2. This is UGA’s second-highest BCS finish. Following the 2002 season, the Bulldogs (ranked 5th in the final rankings) also went to the Sugar Bowl, beating Florida State.
3. If not for an early-season loss to Steve Spurrier’s Gamecocks, UGA would have played in the SEC championship — essentially the national semifinal.
4. Hawaii averaged 47 points a game, but put up only 17 against a mediocre Alabama team last season.
5. Had the BCS existed in 1980, UGA may not have played in the title game. Due to strength of schedule issues, a likely matchup would have been Florida State vs. Pitt.
What do you think Georgia fans?
