Parcells passes on offer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
You just knew it was too good to be true, right?
The latest disappointment to befall the Atlanta Falcons comes in the form of Bill Parcells’ decision not to accept the job of running football operations for owner Arthur Blank?
Does Parcells’ retraction surprise you in the least? Or are the Falcons doomed to hiring whatever NFL also-ran is willing to come work for this woeful organization?

Falcons fans can’t catch a break it seems. Perhaps the team should really focus on securing the hire before leaking it to the public. The fanbase has had its hopes dashed too many times this year. Too bad Falcons fans.

Dang it to heck! He’s got to press forward to get good proven football men in at both GM and head coach and that GM needs to hire the coach. Would Jimmy Johnson bite at a similar deal?

Well, come on and let’s all get real with this scenario, shall we?
Parcells is a mercenary Pure and simple, a gun for hire with no semblance of loyalty to a community or a team.
That said, this is not the way to build a loyal fan base or team. I give credit to Blank for stepping up to get the most credible talent to turn the sagging fortunes of the franchise around but you know something else?
This may be a blessing in disguise because it’s already awakened a sense of change with the owner and his knowing the need to go in radical new directions which the franchise sorely needs.

It’s called KARMA, BAD KARMA!!
You fired the best coach in football for not maikng the playoffs while his starting QB was injured, THAT WAS JUST WRONG!!!
We have been paying the price ever since and the only way to stop BAD KARMA is to correct the action that caused it.
So until you at least offer the same job to DAN REEVES “and frankly I hope he turns you down” you can only expect more of the same from the Atlanta “STOOGES” I mean Falcons!!!

USED ABUSED PLAYED FOR A FOOL
Can someone — anyone — explain to me how Arthur Blank achieved success in life prior to being owner of the Falcons?!?!
Bill Parcells just put a dress on Arthur Blank, took his lunch money, B slapped him and placed a “kick me” tag on his back for all the world to see.
And this wasn’t the first time, it’s now a pattern that repeats over and over. Everybody gets over on Arthur Blank.

Sounds like Parcells used the Falcons to up the ante with the Dolphins. Did he really want to live in Atlanta? As my brother a long time Giants fan said, doesn’t seem like Parcells was an Atlanta type guy—Miami, yes, Atlanta, no. He was in it for the $$ and he worked that to his advantage. I feel bad for Arthur Blank and the Falcons. What can he possibly do now? Jimmy Johnson is about the only other person who would create instant excitement and that is NOT going to happen.

It may be of no comfort but it’s better Blank goes thru all this now as opposed to later. There is no loyalty in professional sports and Parcels is just another guy who followed the money. Ironic, Blank overlooked two great black candidates for Mora and then the Petrino experiment exploded. Arthur hire Mike Singletary as coach!

As a die hard Atlanta Falcons fan since age 5 I am never surprised by what tragic things happen to my favorite and most beloved franchise. I don’t think there is a franchise in the world that has as bad of luck as the Falcons. It seems as if from day 1 this organization was just doomed. As for the Bill Parcells debacle, I am not surprised by that either, I knew in the back of my mind when I heard that the Miami Dolphins were also interested I went ahead and prepared myself for what was to come. The Miami Dolphins not only have a more successful tradition of mere winning in the NFL but they are also located in the nirvana of weather climates where it’s always 80 degrees or above and the entire city has a laid back approach to things. I think Parcells would have taken the offer with the Falcons if the Dolphins hadn’t gotten involved. That being said and maybe this is just me being an optimist but there is a faint light at the end of the tunnel for the Atlanta Falcons, there is still time to get things turned around and headed in the right direction as a football team, it probably starts with Marty Schottenheimer being hired as head coach though. You just never know with this team, afterall can you really trust a franchise that was once stupid enough to hire Jerry Glanville as coach and on top of that run Brett Favre, one of the best quarterbacks of all time out of town.

At least my brother won’t be making personnel decisions nor hiring any coaches again. But Blank needs to learn to stop hanging around snakes because they will get you sooner or later. Fortunately, Parcells got out before he got in, if he is headed to the Dolphins, so be it. Dude has had a longer playoff win drought than the Hawks. He’s a has been who will end up quitting in short order once he realizes that his imposing personality won’t work too well with agents nor other desk jockeys.

This is definitely embarassing for us but I don’t think it’s too hard to answer diehard falcons fan’s question “What made the offer in MIAMI better than the offer in ATLANTA” - Miami has a history of winning, Super Bowls included, Dan Marino and a host of Hall of Famers, etc.

Could it get more embarassing for this team? You’re about to make a hire that will restore hope and respectability to the team, and then you lose out on him to Miami? What did they offer that Blank wouldn’t? It makes Blank look like a horse’s rear to have been outbid, or used by Parcells to get more $$ from Miami. So sad.

The media runs their mouth too much!!1
Miami offered Parcells the deal because they heard he was going to sign with Atlanta.
If these stupid media types would shut up about things like this, we might be able to get someone worth something once in awhile. Not everything needs blasted in the news paper and on radio. Benedict Tuna did the same thing to the Bucs before Gruden was hired. Maybe he just likes toying w/McKay? Regardless, the Durty Burds are likely better off w/o that ego maniac and his man-(.)(.) around. Blank is barking up the right trees by going after proven NFL guys instead of whoever Mora & Petrino were. Too bad he’s suffering yet another public embarrassment over this, but maybe proven NFL guys are thinking twice about working for an obviously hands-on, too-close-to-the-players, not-enough-to-do owner? Maybe?

It is obvious that the Falcons did not leak the story, but Bill Parcells did.
Using the Falcons this way, especially with all that they have recently been through, especially when Mr. Blank is working so hard to rebuild confidence in the franchise was a despicable and classless act.
If Mr. Parcells wanted the Dolphins job so bad, or wanted more money, he should have used some other form of leverage rather than leaking the job offer from Atlanta and exciting the fans. This is some ego trip…

Unless the Falcons heavily pursue Marty Schottenheimer, it’s going to be a very long time before this team is even respectable again. I don’t think I’ve honestly seen a franchise this snakebit in one season. Mike Singletary would be a decent hire, but I don’t think any sane person would want to be associated with the Falcons right now. Get used to it Falcons fans, 3-13 is the best this team is going to do for quite a while.
Hopefully Darren Mcfadden is on his way to save this franchise like LT did for the Chargers. But seeing as how the Rams and the Jets won’t win again either, we probably will miss out on that as well.

Nothing he does or doesn’t do over the next year will effect the falcons in the slightest (aside from providing a scapegoat).
What action did the falcons engage in that “distroyed” [sic] him? He decided to participate in an illegal enterprise. He plead guilty to federal charges that carried up to 5 years in prison. The falcons should have what…forfeit every game in solidarity with a confessed criminal? No, they will try to unload a large contract that Vick cannot fulfill.

It’s about time that Mr. Blank had a conversation with Ted Turner re: owning a professsional sports team.

Obviously Parcells wanted to go to Miami in the first place. This was just a way to get more money from the Dolphins!! If the Falcons really wanted him I’m sure Author Blank has the money, but I don’t think Parcells ever wanted to come to Atlanta in the first place. Hire someone that wants to be here, and build an OUTDOOR stadium about fifty miles south of Atlanta with easy access and plenty of tailgate areas. There are many people from central and south Georgia who would come to support the Falcons. These are the people who have lived in this state all their life, not transplants and fare weather fans that live in Atlant!!!!! THIS IS THE SOUTH, WHERE COLLEGE FOOTBALL RULES. GIVE US THAT TYPE OF ATMOSPHERE AND YOU WILL FILL THE STADIUM!!!!

Either Miami offered more, Parcells thought the Falcons are a lost cause, or, most likely, he was never interested in trying build something out of the Falcons’ shambles but was instead using them to parlay a better contract from Miami.
Either way back to square one, Blank, but I like where you’re going with this.

The Falcons are better off without Parcells, who is only a hired gun with no real front office experience. Arthur Blank needs to quit worrying about making a big splash, and instead actually hire a competent front office man to run the organization. Here would be my plan:
The Falcons need to hire Chris Polian, son of the Colts Bill Polian, who is a great executive and built several great teams in Buffalo, Carolina, and now Indy.
Rich McKay needs to go, probably to work for the league. He and whoever you hire shouldn’t be in the same organization, it would just be too bloated and uncomfortable.
Chris Polian should then turn around and hire the single best coach available, and should be allowed to make that decision completely on his own. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a big name coach. I’d consider Marty Schottenheimer, Ralph Friedgen of Maryland, Jim Caldwell of the Colts, Mike Singletary of the 49’ers, Josh McDaniel of New England, and others. My first pick would be Schottenheimer, but it has to be Polian’s call.
Chris is a great talent evaluator and should know from his Dad the best way to build a team. You need to commit to building thru the draft, with a focus on getting a long term solution at QB, Defensive End, and Left tackle. Solve those positions, then go into getting a RB and other weapons for your young quarterback to grow with. Develop a plan and stick with it long term.

Blank needs to call Schottenheimer in and bring stability back to Atlanta. The man turned San Diego into a beast only two years after Eli refused to go their because San Diego was a doormat.
I am also in favor of Vick being given a second chance with the Falcons. If Blank does not want to deal with it, i understand because of how Mike lied to his face….to save face. Worst case scenario, Blank will sell out every falcons home game for the comeback year just because EVERYONE will want to see Vick succeed or fall flat on his face. I’m hoping for redemption, but we’ll see. MartyBall and Vick would be a lethal combo….a la BeamerBall and Vick.

People fail to realize something. When you mistreat people, it comes back on you. In my opinion, had Mr. Blank treated Michael Vick with respect regarding the stupid dog mess, maybe things would be a little better. I have not read or heard one nice thing from Mr. Blank about Michael Vick. He should know, one day Michael Vick will be back on his feet and will make it.

The bad news is that Parcells turned Blank down. The good news is that Blank was even trying to hire Parcells. At least it shows Blank realizes that “Teflon” McKay has to finally bear some responsibility for the failed coaching and personnel moves that have taken place on his watch. As the old saying goes, things can only get better from here.

It is time for all those in the ATL media, fanbase and community to stop kissing Prince Blank’s a$$. Hasn’t it been shown by now (5 years of Blank) that this man is no leader, negotiator, or judge of character - he is not Benie Marcus who was the true leader of HD.
I knew this slimeball when he first arrived here in ATL to start HD and his leadership skills haven’t changed. Having money doesn’t make someone smart or give him character. He is a meddlesome crybaby who loves the role of victim.
I don’t blame Parcells for saying no to Blank vs the Miami owner who is a real success in business. Anyone is a good judge of people would say no to Blank. Blank just hung onto Bernie’s coattails until HD got rid of him. Look it up you idiots who sing his praises. He has brought nothing but embarrassment to the community and State of Georgia with his stewardship of the Falcon’s.

Where is McKay in this mess? At some point in time the GM is going to have to step up and start taking some blame! It is not all Blank!! Who fired Reeves? Who selected Vick? Who hired and fired Mora? Who hired Petrino? Who allowed all of the non communications of Petrino with the players? Come on folks — go get Bobby Betheard, or someone like him as the GM. McKay is in over his head — as he has proven each year he has been with the Falcons.

I would not want to work for Blank either. He is apparently in everyone business, and I for one, am tired of seeing him on the sideline during games. Stay with what you know Mr. Blank! Hire the best people you can find and STAY OUT OF THEIR WAY!
No one cares to see you pacing the sideline (like Jerry Jones) acting like you know something about football. You have demonstrated a willingness to hire the best, but you refuse to allow them the space to achieve and to perform.
You have also clearly demonstrated that you are a poor judge of character, star-struck by your employees, making you ultimately look out of control, foolish and befuddled.
The franchise will never recover from your over-bearing myopic control. Turn it lose!

Seriously though, here’s a sure fire way to build a Super Bowl contender by 2010.
Chances are such a team would become competitive around, say, May 2009, which is about 19 and a half months from now. Draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round in the ‘09 draft, and when Michael Vick gets released on good behavior, let him come to 2009 training camp and battle for the starting QB job with the incumbent veteran and the newly drafted rookie. Whoever wins the job gets to QB the team to the playoffs that year and beyond.
Then when Schottenheimer chokes away the playoffs that year, fire him and replace him with a quality young assistant coach (someone more like Mike Tomlin and less like Jim Mora). There you go, you have a contender.
Now all Arthur Blank has to do is hire me as VP of football operations.

It seems that Arthur Blank is trying to do the right thing — bringing in both a new GM and head coach. The problem is the low lives keep getting in the way. It’s likely that it was Parcells agent who leaked to the press yesterday, not the Falcons, with the main purpose of continuing to stoke up the Dolphins. Blank fired Reeves because Blank want to put his own stamp on the team he just bought. That’s his right but in retrospect that was a terrible decision and he,the team, and this city has paid the price. Now with the Parcells mess its also clear that McKay’s days are numbered. In this league it’s important that the GM and coach be on the same page and for that reason a GM needs to be hired first. Speculating on coaches at this point is a wate of time. If I’m Blank I look at the GMs of places like Seattle, Jacksonville, Buffalo and go after a difference maker who is proven at the GM level. The fact is that Parcells is not a proven GM,and is basically an a**hole who would have good for mainly blowing the organization and team up. I don’t know however what kind of builder he would have been or what kind of coach would have agreed to work under him. At this point Blank just needs to bring the right person in so that he can get out of the operational aspect of the business. My guess is that even Blank has realized he is in over his head here and doesn’t have the make-up to deal with the types of individuals that populate this league.

Fellow Falcon Fans, Not having a washed up coach who has no idea of being a vice president of anything, is a good thing. The tuna hasn’t won anything in the past 17 years. Arthur Blank needs to start all over and start from scratch. Keep only 1st and second year players. Our next head coach, or top assistant, needs to have at least won a championship within the past decade. Let’s do it the right way, and hire Tony Dungy’s top assistant.

WHO Cares! Parcells’ is just like Petrino in that he does not stay anywhere long. Atlanta needs someone that is committed to Atlanta, as this is not going to be a quick fix. The owner needs to hire a football person and tell him to let him know two things:
1 What time are the home games and 2 What time does the plane leave for the road game. And one more thing - Keep his a* off the field.

Ted Turner kept stepping on his own thing, until he finally gave up and admitted that firing Bobby Cox was the stupidest thing he had ever done. So Arthur needs to go to school on ole Teddy and admit that firing Dan Reeves was the stupidest thing he ever did, except for picking orange for the HD colors. I dunno, it just seems to me A Blank is more concerned with making headlines than good decisions. Over and over again he goes for the splashy move over the correct move. First Cowher, then Parcells…..hell, let’s exhume Lombardi and prop him up on the sidelines. Look, Arthur, no big name, established coach with hall of fame credentials wants anything to do with that train wreck that is the Atlanta Falcons. Blank deserves everything he is getting. (1) He buys the team and lowers ticket prices to get folks to come back and then slowly starts raising them to ridiculous heights. He thinks the average Joe is to stupid to recognize this; (2) He wasted a draft choice on a thug poising as a QB that will/would never lead a team to the Super Bowl (3) He signs a coach to contract that does not have a clause to prevent him from coaching elsewhere for the length of the contract (dumb). Merry Christmas Blank…PS stick to lumber and plumbing supplies and get out of football.
