Fratello: Hawks breakthrough near

With the NBA season about to tip off, former Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Fratello, now an analyst for TNT, gives us five teams that could surprise:

1. Orlando. They’ve added depth and the younger players are a year older.

2. New Orleans. If they can stay healthy, they’ll win 10 more games than last season.

3. Atlanta. On the brink of breaking through.

4. Memphis. Right on the verge of some big things.

5. L.A. Lakers. They are going to win more than people think.

GIVE US FIVE: Which NBA squads do you see shaking up the league this season? Are the Hawks on your short list too? Sound off to compare your NBA insights with other readers’.

1.) Hawks - I believe in this team. My friends and I will be there Opening Night cheering them on! I believe this year is our break through year, I’m just happy to say it now and not be a bandwagon person saying it midseason!! 2.) New Orleans- This team will stay healthy this year and make the playoffs as the 7th seed in the west. 3.) Boston - Of course! 4.) Go 5.) Hawks!!

TOP 5 HAWKS,LAKERS,ORLANDO,NEW YORK AND NEW ORLEANS. I think the hawks have a lot to prove. The Josh’s are in a contract year and have a lot of motivation. Look out for Marvin to have a break out year for sure!!

I am with you Hawksville. I am saying it now and have stuck with the Hawks all along. I had a friend who asked me how it felt to be disappointed by them every year. My reply: I will only be that much sweeter this year when they break through.

For the first time in YEARS, I actually have hope for the Hawks. The additions of Horford and Law have helped sparked that, now if we can get “Duck-butt” Marvin Williams and “Two Left-Legs” Sheldon Williams to play like they’ve been doing this their whole freaking life, we’ll get somewhere. I hope they see Horford and his winning ways rub off on them ‘cause they play like they got forever to get it together and they DON’T. They have to play better for this team to do something. It’s one thing to do it in summer leagues and the pre-season, but the real deal starts now and that’s where their game needs to show up. One more mediocre season from them two and it needs to be “Adios amigos!”. I’m so tired of seeing these talented players get drafted, come here and rest their laurels like “-this franchise is so sorry, they’re not going to cut me anytime soon.” PLAY WITH SOME FIRE OR GET LOST! We’ve had enough of this ho-hum, “what should I do now?” play from these grown azz millionaires. This has to stop NOW!! No more promises, no more predictions, no more “wait ‘til they grow up” mess. You’ve seen the Nike commercials- JUST DO IT!!

GO HAWKS!!

It all depends on the development at the point. Unless we have an engine to make this thing go, as we have seen over the past futile decade, it won’t really matter about the pieces at the 2,3, 4 and 5. If one of the PG candidates steps up and really gets this team going then I think the Hawks definitely get in. Heck, this is the Eastern Conference; it will only take 36 or so wins.

I like everyone’s optimism, but I just don’t see the Hawks breaking out of the gate early. Their first month is brutal that includes Phx, Dallas, Detroit, NJ and Boston in the first 5. I want to rise-up, but it will take a very good December for the Hawks to make any noise this year. Any of those teams mentioned can compete with us, yet I don’t see how New York has gotten better with Isiah Thomas still as HC. The same can be said here. Will you guys be happy with a 6-9 November? 4 sets of back-2-backs are in place here.

Completely off the subject here…but are there any Hawks fans in the DC area? Me and a friend are going to the ATL/Wizards game at the Verizon Center here on 21 Dec 07. If there are any fans here and are going to the game, email me…let’s show our support…don’t have to be back home in the ATL to show our team some love. JACKETS_GT@YAHOO.COM

I like the Hawks this year. The addition of Harford will end up being a turning point for this team. I just hope that Billy Knight won’t mess too much with the team. Kind of scary when you come to realize that BK is somewhat of a visionary in that a lot of teams are trying to get more to a 3 forwards type set that is able to run the floor all night. I just hope that the players will listen closely to what Coach Woodson is preaching and they push hard all season. Could be an interesting year!

Al Horford and Acie Law are more mature and more discipline than the previous rookies they’ve had in the pass. If Josh Smith would play to his strength which is rebounding and blocking shots and let the rest of the game come to him, we can win the whole thing. We will win it all with this lineup: Acie Law, JJ, JS, Al Horford and Zaza.

Let’s look for the Hawks to break through at 39 wins 43 losses.

We are a two-deep team that will help with the injuries that all NBA teams sustain. We have interchangable parts with tweeners Smith, Childress, and Horford that allow us to have the best 5 on the court when we need them.

Where we will suffer is the lack of size in the middle. Look for teams with a great post presence to give us fits.

My advice to Woody - run, run, run and then run some more with your second team. You are deep, athletic, young with little post presence. Run like Mike Fratello would want you to.

Even without Greg Oden, Portland will surprise people this year. LaMarcus Aldridge will win Most Improved Player and maybe make the All-Star team, since KG is now in the East and Elton Brand is hurt.

I’m still not convinced the Hawks have sufficient character and discipline to consistently win, but perhaps Horford and Law can inject some maturity into this bunch.

The team looks good on paper for the first time in years. The only problem is they have to play the games on the court.

Actually Dan the opening game against Dallas is going to be right here in the ATL! Let’s fill’up Phillips and make some noise for our HAWKS!!! It’s playoffs this year baby! I’m expecting forty-plus wins this year.

I’m willing to go out on a limb and say they’ll win half their games! It’s a shame we’re so used to losing that .500 seems a gigantic accomplishment. These guys can make the playoffs and I agree with those that think our best bet is to run everyone of the court. We have the depth and speed to do that now. Go Hawks!

Everything will be fine if Coach Woodson don’t screw it up. Billy Knight has given him more than enough talent to work with. We will know after about 20 games. He needs to find time for Salim who is the one person on the team that can stretch the defense.

I guess the time for optimism is the day before the season starts. As someone else pointed out, the Hawks have a BRUTAL schedule in the first month. They’ll be lucky to be anywhere near break-even after that start. That’s where the coaching staff comes in. If Woody keeps these guys’ chins up, and allows the talent to develop naturally over the course of the season, I think this team has playoff potential. They sure as hell won’t win it all, but we won’t have to be embarrassed to call ourselves Hawks fans anymore.
