Ready for the Cocktail Party?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Dogs are off this week, but it’s not too early for UGA fans to prepare for the annual trip to Jacksonville for the annual clash against the Gators.
What makes the weekend special for you? What are your traditions, routines, special things that you and friends and family do before, during and after the game? What’s your typical itinerary for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party?
What are your favorite places to eat, drink and be merry around Jacksonville? And for tailgating?
We’re compiling a list of Bulldog Nation fan favorites to feature next week in a cool interactive guide that will include your picks. Just shoot us the names of the restaurants, bars and Jax hotspots that you frequent, and we’ll take care of the rest.

If staying on or near Amelia go to the Saloon on Fernindina Beach. There is always a band there in the back and it is a lot of fun.

Best place to be is on the golf course and tape the game. If the Pups win, watch the game. If they lose, trash the tape. Too much dissapointment in Jax.

I tailgated with a group(UGA and uf fans) two years ago that had a jean short checkpoint. They would literally pull gayturds with jorts on out of their cars and take pictures. Needless to say a lot of photos were made that day.

markymark107 I love seeing bulldog fans resort to (untrue) stereotypes. I love see all of the people from Athens (the fashion capital of the world) leave the stadium with long, sad faces after another loss. What’s the excuse going to be this year? We would have won if Lumpkin was playing?

As a Tech fan, I always give my UGA friends grief over their off-the-field woes.
But then I look at the way Florida runs its program (9 arrests in the last 9 months). You have got to be kidding me?!?!
I would love to have a national championship but I’m not so sure I’d love having to cheer for a boatload of convicts. And yes, I realize Tech had Reuben Houston, but that was ONE guy and it was marijuana…not theft or spousal abuse.
Florida and UGA both have thuggish players but Florida takes the cake…hands down.
I hope this game goes into 10 overtimes knotted at 7-7.

I see the AJC is on board with the efforts of the UGA and UF to get rid of the “Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” label for this game. While your readers are sharing the best places to get drunk, why not a list of where Georgia and Florida fans have been killed and injured by drunken idiots following the game?

Eat, drink, be merry?? Hell, this game reminds me of Pearl Harbor all over again. I eat, drink and feel merry when anyone else beats the gators. The UGA-FL game is no fun anymore. Sadly, a great rivalry is no longer a rival.
But remember this, Dawgs fans….. The sun don’t shine on the same dogs a* every day. The series will turn again. Mark my words.

Arrive on St. Simons Thursday- Drink on the beach all day Friday. Low Country boil & booze on the porch of the beach house Friday night. Hit the Village for more drinks. Load the bus head to private tailgate in Jax with BBQ, Booze & live music. Go to the game. Get back on bus, booze it up at the beach house and watch other games on tv. Brunch & Bloody Maries at 4th of May Cafe on Sunday. Drive back to Athens slowly.

First, there is a big difference between getting arrested and being a convict. Tech does not have a law school, does it? Second, please give me a example of a UF player that was arrested for a violent crime (assault, spousal abuse etc.)
Brandon James - marijuana
Dorian Munroe was charged with theft when he removed a University Police Department boot from his car and put it in his trunk. Jacques Rickerson (possession of marijuana) - case was resolved without legal punishment. Dustin Doe (affray) - brawling charges against Doe were dismissed. It was self defense. John Curtis (probation violation) with possession of an alcoholic beverage by a minor. Tony Joiner – Theft from a towing lot – no charges filed
Which one of these is the CONVICT? I really wish this things would not happen but they are all things that College kids do. This is the only one that was really bad:
Ronnie Wilson, who was charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor for an April incident involving a gun in a parking lot near campus. He has been suspended indefinitely. Please have some facts before spouting off at the mouth (keyboard).

noyellowinthisblood I think you are making up a story. Perpetuating a myth that was concocted to help people deal with the reality of being owned. I don’t think there were any gator fans in jean shorts. I have not seen mullets and jorts in Gainesville since the late 80’s. Wasn’t that the last time UGA had success vs UF? Maybe UGA fans have blocked out the last 17 years and only chose to remember the years before that! We’ve since replaced our jorts with new gear from 4 National Championships. But then again, I’m sure you have a Gym Dawgs National Champs tank top in your closet!
Your use of ‘Gayturd’ shows your lack of maturity and education. I’d take a dig a UGA here, but I’m pretty sure you have not actually attended the University.

How about you go stick your head in a hole Gary, and not come out. It will always be “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”. Head to St. Simons on Thursday and drink it up, and eat some seafood, Friday head to the Landing for a night you won’t forget and mingle with the few Florida ladies and tease them. Then wake up on Saturday and just fire up the grill, bring out the t.v, and get d-runk before heading to the game. Come back to the tailgate after a Dawgs win, and not go to sleep till Sunday night.

I hate everything about FL/GA weekend. I hate how the excessive alcohol brings the jacka** out in all of the fans and I hate the city of Jacksonville itself. I don’t buy the argument “they have the worst fans” because every school has some horrible fans. It is just that much more magnified at this event because it is well known how much of a party it is supposed to be. I hope one day it becomes a rivalry again, and that the Dawgs can win some. Congratulations to Florida they always seem to find a way to win and that is what good teams do. I hope it is a good game and no injuries on either side. Everybody be safe in Jacksonville and pay attention to your surroundings at all times.

Casey, you’re obviously young and single with no responsiblities. I plan on having a great time Saturday too. There’ll be seafood, steaks, a few brews and hopefully a great game on the tube at my Florida beach home. One of these days when you grow up, you can have those things too. Assuming you make it home alive from Jacksonville. BTW, you’re not invited. Go Dawgs!

All the students are in St. Simons Island. This is my senior year (hmm, 5th year) and we are staying at The King and Prince on the beach. From there, the main hot spot on the island is Brogan’s; that is where it all goes down. Then, on Saturday, we will catch a bus to the stadium, tailgate, and go to the game. It is hilarious to see how NONE of the Florida girls dress up; they all wear jorts and jerseys while all the lady Dawgs are all prettied up. If we win, we go to The Landing. If we lose, like normal, we’ll go back to St. Simons.

Jacksonville stadium would have to be ranked by DAWGED fans as the worst place in J’ville to
EAT DRINK AND BE MERRY
Anna Nicole had better luck at the Hard Rock Hotel then the DAWGED NATION has had at that stadium.
I heard that the DAWGED NATION has a Pavlov response whenever they go to that stadium.

I love the WLOCP. Seems like the majority of people are just milling around looking for the best tailgate party but all of them seem the same. I recently found a website that offers up some new Tailgating Ideas that runs the gamut of cool stuff to bring like blenders made from your cordless drill to a mobile tiki bar. Might be cool to include it in your article next week.

Drink excessively before the game…make fun of UF jean shorts to make up for the inferiority of our football team….try to keep the tailgating a little classy with some southern style mint juleps…Afterwards, drive back to athens very slowly after a heart wrenching loss…. what a good weekend, the same as every year.

My man, Patrick, drives us to Jacksonville on Saturday, (we will once again leave with a suburban full of booze around 10:30 am for the 3:30 pm kickoff). Upon arrival I may sing a song to the tune of Pink Floyd’s We Don’t Need No Education. Here are the words:
We don’t need no Gator Nation We don’t need no chains of gold No blue-jean shorts shall walk among us Gators leave them Dawgs alone…

Go out that night and verbally abuse Gaytor fans(and you’re right we don’t always win the game but after seeing their fans we know we won in the game of life). Make “The Walk” from Adam’s Mark to Alltell stoping along the way at various UGA tailgates. Continue to laugh and point at North Florida trash. Win or lose, go out that night and PARTY!!!

JAX SUX BIG TIME!!!!
Saddest part is the city itself always pulls for the dogs as we will spend it up and are fun folks to be lit with after!! After living there for a few years this IS the report I got from many business owners and residents down there. UF fans are lame and no fun, but even with the home city pulling for us….. consistent bad coaching has led to an abominal 2-14?? since UF brought out the thier tactical nuclear weapon, I mean coach Steverino. What the FK!!!!! Dawgs this is so sad, NO REALY all we can do as fans is just sit back and get ST on year after year. Now after watching Richt vs. Urban I feel the same as it was in the 90’s. We are just outgunned and our program is 100% outspent!!! UF spends big to win football and basketball and we haven’t started to yet. UGA actually builds big educational buildings and invests in other sports besides Thug ball. At this point after seeing the genetics of UF fans in general especially the NAPPY females that graduated from that educational institution, they honestly need power house football and now basketball cause they aint got a whole lot after that down there. Hey Gator fans I’ll give you your thug ball dominance over the last 17 years but your campus/town/babes absolutely SUCK!!!! UGA wins big where it truly counts baby!!!! Don’t believe me??? I have spent time in the butthole of Florida and it its called Gainesville!!! Come on up to A town (finest college town in the world!!)
Proudest UGA alum ever right here!!!
Best damn college period. Even if dogs go 0-12 in football students and alum are living a life without jean shorts, confidently knowing that our college experience was the best in the country.

GA FL is a great time to spend time in St. Simons Island. I live here, and friends typically come down to enjoy the festivities. Tip: buy your groceries about Wednesday and sit back and watch the spectacle. Some years we go to the game, and some years we stay right here. This year we’ll cook and eat all day, watch the game on big screen, and probably visit both of the Brogens bar and grill here on SSI. Brogens North will be an older, more settled crowe, and Brogens South (at the pier) will be the wildest place in the Bulldog Nation this week — it’s hallowed ground. These two restaurants are Dawg headquarters, and you’re likely to see many UGA luminaries there at one time or another.

I’ve lived in Jacksonville since moving from Georgia in 2001. Here’s a couple of tips: 1. If you are looking for really fresh, really good seafood - go to Singleton’s or Safe Harbor. Both are in Mayport, right at the boat docks, and get fish right off the boats. If you are staying on Amelia Island, it’s an easy drive down A1A and then take the ferry across the St Johns River. 2. As someone mentioned before, Cruisers in Jax Beach has the best burgers in town. Order the burger without salt though… 3. If you are staying at the beach, Pete’s Bar is awesome. It looks like a hole-in-the-wall type place, but it has cheap drinks and pool tables too. 4. Re #3 - watch out for the cops! That goes for everywhere in this area.
5. Party hard, be safe, and lets paint this town red and black! See you at The Landing Friday night. GO DAWGS! (And yes, I know this was more than a couple of things)
