Manny: No Series, no sweat
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez told reporters Wednesday that “it’s not like it’s the end of the world” if Boston doesn’t make the 2007 World Series. He followed that statement by noting “Why should we panic?” because “we’ve got a great team.”
Down 3-1 to Cleveland, should Boston fans take umbrage at Manny’s remarks? Or is all this being overblown? Is Manny just being Manny? You Be The GM: Do you want Manny on the Braves, hypothetically speaking, if not making the Series isn’t a big deal to him? Sports Talk starts here.

Money aside, anyone who says they don’t want Manny in the middle of their lineup is an absolute idiot. What have his ‘personality issues’ led to? Only a World Series title, consistently dominant numbers, and protection for whoever hits in front of him. Granted on any other team in the AL he’d be a DH, but he makes up for his defense with his bat.

First off WHO CARES! I hope Boston DOES lose to the Tribe so thier CHOWDA EATIN fans can go back to being LOSERS. Remember when Boston fans were kinda adored because they were such big losers and now that they have a winning team they all act like a bunch of NY Yankee fans but worse?! It’s true, half this country that owns a SAWKS hat has never even set foot in the state of Mass. but they will tell you they are a lifelong fan. Bandwagon LOSERS!

Manny being Manny…he’s just setting the stage for another run at getting traded, then we will have to listen to that most of the offseason, everyone will talk to the Red Sox about Manny, and just before the trade is finalized, he will change his mind and stay in Boston with Big Papi

This just goes to show that these guys who make millions of dollars playing a kids game really don’t care as much as the fans who spend their hard earned dollar to support their ridiculous salaries.
If Boston loses Manny still gets paid his $17M annual contract plus he gets to start his three month vacation.

On the front page of the AJC website there was an article about a woman who just had a baby who is battling cancer for the third time. Manny’s right. Not making it to the World Series is not the end of the world; not being able to see your child grow up is.

Who watches baseball anymore? It’s the most boring sport behind womens basketball. The fun part of baseball is trying to watch an over weight pitcher try to run down a pop fly without falling over. 165 games or whatever they play and by mid season you pretty much know who is going to make the playoffs. Weak! I look forward to the next strike season and no baseball on tv for the entire summer. Now that will be awesome.

His comments sum up the problems in baseball. If any executive for any major corporation ever came out and said “who cares if we make our goals or not” they would be gone by the end of the day. Granted he is playing a kid’s game but that is his job and the goal of his company is to win the WS. When he or anyone says what he did it just proves baseball players have become spoiled brats with no appreciation of how hard it is to make it in the real world.

I disagree, Vick. NBA basketball is the most boring sport. Lazy play, supersized egos, an utter lack of skills. They should make it a one-on-one league. I’d rather spend my money on the circus: equally entertaining, dominated by animals, but you know the circus is supposed to be a joke. Heck, NBAers aren’t even the elite basketball players in the world anymore; the international scene has surpassed the NBA. Oh, the shame the original Dream Team must feel!

I think there’s too many off days between games here and the media is looking for something to talk about.
Saying losing isn’t the end of the world and saying ‘I’m not trying’ are two different things. Manny’s mashing the ball in the playoffs, I think we know what he meant. Too bad the rest of the Red Sox can’t hit right now.

First off, I love Manny….I don’t like the Red SAWKS but, I love his demanor, his disposition, and his attitude. I got a laugh when he admired his home-run while all of Jacobs Field GAWKED at him. It’s hilarious…and it shows that Manny has it in the right perspective.
Remember last season, he was hanging out at the Yankees’ hotel with Mariano Rivera and others and fans chastized him for “fraternizing with the enemy.” I mean, get real!!! When it’s over, he’ll go back to his place at the Boston Ritz-Carlton and chill out, take his vacation in the Carribean and come back to the Ritz for next season. Don’t worry about Manny because….he keeps the right tempermemt….unlike some on this blog.

The Braves seem to have the same attitude, 1 for 14 and the Front office and Fans think thats great. The Braves think making play-off is great but bottom line, its to win World Series. The main reason fans dont pack the park for Braves play-off games is they know Bobby and gang are happy just getting there and its over.Until that changes you can forget it. Braves need new direction in dugout.

First, nobody in ATL gives a damn about the Red Sox, or Ramirez.
Boston may be anb “educational center”, but if you spend much time in Boston, doesn’t take long to realize that most of the students there are from somewhere else. Clearly, most local people are pretty dumb and provincial…the city itself is just a typical, dirty, crime ridden northeastern city. It may have water, but you probably shouldn’t drink it.

truthteller - No one in ATL cares about the Red Sox? Really? Is that the reason why the 3 game series at Turner Field this year along with the Detroit series were the most attended games this season? Check your facts before you run your mouth.
GR - I’m sorry, I missed the announced start time for the Yankee game this week? When is that, btw?
Manny’s comments were not only more of Manny being Manny, but he’s right, there are more important things in life than a baseball game. He’s done his part this postseason; if only Drew, Crisp and some of the other had then they wouldn’t be in this 3-1 hole.
And as for bandwagon fans, some of you who are Braves fans are pretty myopic and short of memory. In 1991, the resurgence of the Braves captivated more than just this city and continued through the 14 years of division titles. For the little boy in the 80s who grew up on cable in Colorado without a team of his own worshipping Bob Horner, Dale Murphy & Ken Oberkfell and never set foot in Georgia, does that make him a “bandwagoner” Braves fan?
That’s the problem with the internet, it makes every moron with a keyboard who couldn’t get anyone at a bar to listen to him into an “expert”.

The Red Sox are classless and Manny is the king of the classless Sox.
The Red Sox thought that they had a clear shot to the World Series, but forgot you actually have to play the game.
The Red Sox would not have even won their division if the season had gone 10 more games or if the Yankees hadn’t had such a miserable start
But don’t worry Sox fans, you only have to wait 83 seasons to win another world Series. 2004 was a fluke

HW, in ‘92 all of the people that started cheering for the Braves after they started winning ARE indeed bandwagon fans. A majority of the Redsox fans that aren’t from the north east started pulling for them after they made the thier big comeback against the Yanks and yes they ARE bandwagon fans too.
Another thing that separates the Braves fans from the 80’s that only had Braves baseball to watch on tv are nowhere near as obnoxious as youz guyz’ fans are. Any redsox fan will have you believing they are the biggest redsox fan ever.
You are indeed well spoken HW but bandwagon fans are bandwagon fans. Your team just seems to have way more. Either that or they are just fair weather fans which would explain a lot.

You typically don’t hear much out of real red sox fans. Might wear a shirt or hat, but don’t run their mouths.
Real Red Sox fans that put up with all we put up with pre-2004 are still in a state of bliss as I am and we still get great satisfaction out of the comeback against the Yankees and win, and that’s good enough. What scenario would ever top 2004 for us? We’ve peaked, and that has relaxed a lot of real Sox fans, myself included.
Every year there’s some reason to talk about the 2004 Sox in the playoffs when a team is down big, and that’s very cool.
This series against Cleveland stinks for sure, but hey they’re the better team now and I don’t mind seeing them win, it’s been what, 60 years for them? They should enjoy it like we did, that won’t upset me, although I’m still rooting for my team to win.
Anyway, if you’re going to judge Sox fans, picking out the fair weather ones is pretty easy, if they’re modest and pretty quiet, they’re real, if they’re annoying and loud, they’re not.

These AJC blogs crack me up. How come every blog digresses into a black vs. white, north vs. south, us vs. them discussion? Anyways, I’ll add my two cents.
I grew up in Atlanta and have been a life long Braves fan. I now live in NYC and attended some Yankees games. People from NY and Boston are just more passionate about baseball, that’s a fact. You can just feel the instensity from the fans as the chant. A few years ago, I bought tickets to the Braves-Giants 5th game at the ticket office before the game and got 3rd baseline seats. That would never happen up here. Braves fans are just not as passionate about the Braves as New Yorkers are about the Yankees are or Boston is about the Sox.
The flip side is northerns know jack about college football.

As I stated about a mnth ago, this is why PRO SPORTS will soon cease to exist,at least Pro Sports as we now know them.
The sad part is while morons like Manny make $20 million a year and contribute NOTHING TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE, he is SO STUPID he has no idea that there is anything wrong with his attitude.
I know there are still some Pro athletes that want to Win more than anything, but I’m afraid the majority of players are just like Manny and once the eqaully ignorant public realizes this, then they will quit going to the games, bringing pro team sports to an end.
Individual sports like Golf where if you don’t perform you don’t get paid will be all that’s left.
Think about it, what would you really rather see, your team maybe some day winning a champioship OR having PRO Baseball, basketball and football simply no longer exist and get to enjoy watching and laughing while these idiot athletes struggle to get a job that pays less tghan what we make.

Regardless of how unlikley it is, every male on Earth dreams of being a part of a major league team and its time that teams STOP letting these morons disrespect the game! Folks,
I think this comment should not be taken in the literal sense, considering Manny’s English is not that good. My interpretation of what he was trying to say is, we have a good team, no need to panic, we’ll do our best and try to bounce back. This is a professional player who is judged by both is personal stats and his team’s stats, day in and out. What is important is when we he said, “Why should we panic?” because “we’ve got a great team.” Let us pay attention to that too. I was listening to ESPN Radio last evening at around 9.00-ish. Sean Salisbury, the analyst, is a huge Sox fan and Sean said that if Manny had stuck with the rah rah rah coachspeak, we would have all said that baseball is not the end all and be all of life and that Manny should just chill it a bit.
No matter what pro athletes or even movie stars say, they will always get criticized. Considering the way Manny has played through the years and through this season, I don’t think Sox fans ought to question his attitude and commitment. I’d love to have him on our Braves roster any given day!
