Women’s pro basketball is coming to Atlanta next summer.
What should the team’s nickname be? Will you be interested in going to any games? Will the WNBA make in a city like Atlanta that has a combination of poor sports teams and indifferent fans?

I hope that the WNBA will last in Atlanta. I also hope that people like Matt and Smart Alleck stay away from the WNBA. Girls and women need all the support to succeed in a biased world. There is no reason for the homophobic remarks. I truly hope the best for the WNBA and the players who come to Atlanta to play. For those who don’t follow the WNBA you don’t really know how well this league has done since it’s inception in 1996. Why do we have to compare this venture to the other teams in Atlanta that haven’t done well before it even get’s off the ground? The WNBA has done a lot for women’s organized sports, and I feel this will be a great venture for the city. I like some of the names given like the Atlanta Kings, Atlanta Glory, or Atlanta Phoenix. They probably will name it something closer in line with the Atlanta Hawks. How about the Atlanta “Prey”!

As a father of a female basketball player, I take great offense at the scatalogical and homophobic slurs that are appearing as names for the team. If you are not interested don’t suggest anything. As far as the quality of a team sport, the WNBA is a lot more interesting than the product currently offered by the NBA and the lack of success the men have had in the international arena in the last few years.

Why are we making fun of it? Average attedance is 8500 — half of what MLS gets, and they’ve been around just as long. The WNBA would’ve folded if the NBA wasn’t bankrolling it. I’m not sure why this new owner wants to throw his money away.

I agree - let’s get a MLS team in here before we waste more time on a sport that no one in this town supports as it is. At least the MLS games would be played in a smaller venue and avoid the embarassment of having 1/8 of a massive arena occupied.

The Atlanta Wings paying homage to the world’s busiest airport… and the name also relates to the Atlanta Hawks name as well (as most of the WNBA franchise’s do with their NBA counterparts)… and it could also relate to the iconic phoenix symbol of our city. It is so sad and unfortunate that there are so many negative people in this world and in the city of Atlanta. I don’t expect everyone to love the idea, but some of the comments I have read shows that there are still some extremely sexist people out there. I hope you guys don’t approach situations in your life with these kind of attitudes or if you have a female child feed her the idea that women sports don’t matter. I applaud those who worked hard on getting Atlanta a women’s team and those who will support it.

ESPN was reporting last month that the WNBA might be about to fold. Now, we get a team?
Nobody wants to go to a women’s game downtown. Men aren’t interested (sorry, but it’s just not as exciting as men’s basketball) and I don’t see women taking their girls alone down to Phillip’s Arena - possibly Gwinnett, but not Phillip’s.

I agree MLS is a better bet than WNBA. Atlanta’s best chance of ascending to MLS is the current USL-1 club in town, the Atlanta Silverbacks. Heck, the Apes are the only pro team in town that’s won a playoff game in years— they made it all the way to the final last month. Come out to RE/MAX stadium when the 2008 season starts in the Spring and check out some pretty entertaining action. A few years of increased fan support could see the Silverbacks expanding their stadium and moving up to MLS.

I’ve liked the suggestions of the Kings or the Wings, and Peaches is okay too.
I’ll definitely go to WNBA games because they actually pass and use tactics more than in the NBA.
As for the attitude that no one will go to the games, the team won’t be owned by the Atlanta Spirit Group (a good thing!), and people don’t go to Hawks games because they lose. If the Hawks played well, they’d fill the house.
I’m looking forward to taking my daughter to WNBA games!

The WNBA is losing money and would have folded already were it not propped up by the NBA. Regardless, the NBA is struggling itself. Last year the Finals had lower ratings than some regular old UCF match.
Couple this with the fact that the Hawks have always had terrible attendance even in the early 90’s when they were good and it seems unlikely that a WNBA team could pay to keep the lights on.
As far as team names… forget Atlanta _ or Georgia _. The team should be based in Decatur.
