Monday QB Club: A win, at last
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After three tortuous games to open the season, the Falcons can breathe easier following their first win, over the Texans: Full AJC coverage here.
As is the case here at the Monday Quarterback Club, we’ll treat you to some other views of what transpired at the Dome, and its aftermath, as well as related and sundry links.
Down in Houston, the once-lofty Texans (okay, for the first two weeks anyway) are finally getting some scrutiny. But a grade of F minus? As depleted as they were? There seems to be some natural-born piling on built into the equation with that team, as burned as those fans have felt since the franchise’s inception. Just to rub it in: Did that botched Schaub-to-Dayne pitchout really take place, or was it Houston’s worst kind of hallucination?
For two weeks in a row, Atlanta’s No. 13 is trying to make Falcons fans forget about No. 7 and No. 8 (for a while, anyway). But is this supreme efficiency really the bizarro Joey Harrington? Give the guy a break!
Wonder if the Bears are kicking themselves about not having an adequate backup-turned-starter.
“Kyle Orton, anyone?” Now that’s cold.
DeAngelo Hall didn’t stick around after the game to talk, but Falcons whose roles are to catch the ball tossed from the now-riflelike arm of No. 13 are loving Petrinoball.
And what’s not to love after Roddy White and Michael Jenkins both turned in sterling performances against Houston? (Pause, take a deep breath and shake your head. That actually did happen. That’s not a dream.)
“It’s the best thing that ever happened to me,” White said. “It’s turned around my career.”
Can the turnaround continue at Tennessee Sunday? While the Titans were idle over the weekend, QB Vince Young was the subject of what’s being called an unusual take by “60 Minutes.” Didn’t see the segment, but numbers freaks raving about Harrington’s output the last few weeks should know that Young isn’t doing too badly himself.
Which reminds MQC of a colleague who’s been fretting about taking Harrington in his fantasy league draft. Well guess what? No. 13 has been declared worth a look in one roto guru’s estimation.
That may be the biggest surprise of the weekend.

Wow,I know its only 2 games but watching Joey run the offense with such precision and command shows why he was the third pick in the first round. Smart, tall, patient, leadership, quailties that we associate with Manning, Brady, Montana. Finally we are playing real football, instead of a college like if all else fails run it joke we’ve had for 6 years.

Some of the fans have been brutal to the Falcons this year, but I think Joey Harrington and the whole team are really starting to play some pretty good football. I said it before the regular season started that they would be a little better than people were giving them credit for and I still believe that. Bobby Petrino and his staff have done a terrific job of keeping this team focused on playing football. Well done.

Joey is showing a quality Vick does not even comprehend, LEADERSHIP and the ability to make everyone on the team better rather than everyone standing around wondering when they might get involved on the over 50% of the time Mike called his number!

if only we had added Morten Anderson Before the season started wed be 2-2 right now. How come we only call on the guy after we give a couple of games away every year!?? I mean what kinda decision is that….”hey lets go with a unproven rookie drafted in the 500th round over the NFL’s all time leading field goal kicker” GREAT MOVE! NOT!! O by tha way..Allen Rossom is tearing it up for the Steelers on returns. Just like he did for us for so many years.
Hopefully we can trade DHall after the season is over for a 1st round pick. Because the guys WAY 2 full of himself! GET OVER YOURSELF MEANGELO HALL….YOUR NO MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE GUY SERVING PEANUTS IN THE STADIUM OR ANY OF THE REST OF US!!

Joey could be the best this that has ever happen to us. We needed someone to play REAL QB. Yeah, he did have a ruff start, but it was a new team and new players for him but now the Falcons seem to be comming along just fine as a TEAM.

I’m glad some of us are giving Joey more than 3 games to prove himself. He is starting to look positive in his decisions. He still has a challenged line to play behind, so it will be up to the entire offense to generate the excitement. BTW, Schaub is still winless in the Georgia Dome! On a side note, Thanks Morten!! who made the decision to keep our original kicker? Will they admit it?

BUSCHWACKER you take any opportunity to down Vick. What the heck is wrong with you? You can’t seriously think that Joey is a better QB than Vick We never started 1-3 with Vick you idiot. And Vick played in large part under Mora and the rest of his bonehead staff that didn’t have a clue. Its unfortunate that we won’t get to see Vick in the new Petrino scheme, we’d probably be 3-1 instead of the other way around. You obviously know nothing about football

I think people were way too hard on Joey. I am not convinced if he should be the falcons’ QB yet, however, he was thrown into this job completely out of the blue, and he barely had an entire pre-season to practice. Add to that the fact that the Falcons offense would suddenly have to shift from a college option style offense, to a real NFL caliber passing style one, in less than a preseason, and it is no surprise that the Falcons started off terribly. They should get better as the season goes along, as they get used to this new style of play.

Just keeping telling yourself that Joey is the answer and maybe it will come true haha. However, you should first talk to a Lion or Dolphin fan and they can give you the real truth on Joey Sunshine. I’ll be back in 6 weeeks, by then the Falcons will be 3-7 and you will be screaming for Joey’s head. See ya

Joey Harrington is by far one of the most cerebral quarterbacks the Falcons have ever entertained. Under the correct curcumstances, I believe he has the potential to be a leader. He is more humble than many athletes and could thrive under the sytem of coach Petrino.

How could we be better with Vick?
He’s under house arrest 14 hours a day. Unless he squats on the 50 yd line and convinces all the other NFL teams on our schedule to move their home games here he’s no good to us.
We missed the playoffs with Vick and we’ll probably miss them without him.
I still say were better off without the moron!!

Yeah,Joeysunshine go ask any Dolphins fan. At 0-4 they might be kicking themselves for not resigning Harrington. Let’s give credit where credit is due. With a little luck the Birds could be and should be 3-1. The guy is showing great poise in the face of unbelievable expectations, adversity, pressure, and downright hatred from the delusional Vick Kool-Aid drinkers. Go Harrington, Petrino, and all the Falcons!

Petrino’s patience and confidence is remolding this team from the Greg Knappy headed disaster of years past. The team is beginning to reflect their coaches attitude. White? Jenkins, HARRINGTON? Who’da thunk it? Damn they actually look like a pro caliber set. Imagine what this team will look like when he’s finished molding the rest of the team. The Petrino era has certainly exhibited a more exciting style of Football and this coach knows how to adjust, where our previous regime didn’t have a clue. Petrino = Hope4thefuture.

I looked up “petulant” and “immature” in the dictionary and dang if it didn’t have a picture of MeAngelo.
During this difficult time for the club, MeAngelo’s petulant and immature emotional outbursts cost us a win —- we’d be 2-2 without his temper-tantrum.
I realize he’s young, but to get into a whizzing contest with your coach doesn’t seem any smarter that getting into a contest with any employer. And, refusing a job the boss gives you is the formular for a trip out the front door.
MeAngelo is a talented player, but high maintenance. Either he gets with the program, or he won’t be around next season —- and who can blame the franchise for getting rid of a demoralizing and negative influence.

It’s more than just about yesterday’s win…it’s about seeing the development of a new system and the confidence that is breeding throughout the Atlanta locker room. As for the DHall issue, I think winning is the ultimate cure-all. Perhaps it was the signing of Leftwich that lit a fire under Joey’s butt. Regardless, the past three weeks he has shown improvement while adjusting to Petrino’s offense.
I read the sportsline article, and I expect as the season goes on both Jenkins and White will have more faith in Harrington. He has thrown ZERO interceptions in the past three games, and next week’s game at Tennesee will be a true barometer of how far he has developed.
I do agree that the defense needs to improve, but I’m thinking that with the return of Rod Coleman in a few weeks things will open up for other defenders.
Here’s food for thought, since we are always looking down the line (hey we’re fans and by nature that’s what we do): Say the Falcons fall out of playoff contention, what are the odds that Leftwich gets some playing time?

I will be the 1st to admit after being scarred by “Dog-Gate” and witnessing his performance in Detroit I thought God was mad at FalconNation or something by having # 13 start for us. There was just no way I would accept Joey. I’m not totally there yet, but if he keeps playing the way he has the last couple of games I may have to reconsider that thinking. Something is to be said about being in a new environment that can change the outlook on somebody. Maybe Joey is benefitting from Petrino’s system or maybe it’s Roddy and MJ finally playing like 1st rd draft picks that’s doing it, but whatever it is it seems to work. I will wait to see what happens when we play some stiffer competition because I’m still worried about # 13 psyche when the rush is on. Not too bad the last couple of weeks though. Let’s keep it going Joey. If we ever get that running game going, look out!

Joey is 6 ft. 4 inches tall. Go around the league and look at all the successful QBs; 6ft. 2in. and up. They can see over oncoming rushes and see the receivers. Something our previous QB could not do and thus, run, run, run, or incomplete; not to mention the too often FUNBLE! Coach is used to a passing game and having a TALL QB to execute. Joey meets the physical part. It remains to be seen if he can continue to deliver the ball to our TALL receivers. It is early, but anyone who will admit it and is a TRUE Falcons fan, will recognize that what is going on is a definite step in the right direction…By the way, “way to go old man Mort.”

Wow! The Falcons finally played like a TEAM yesterday. Harrington did a fine job reading the defense and executing plays as did the rest of the Falcons. I knew it would take a few games for the Falcons to shake off that old “Just give the ball to Mike” offense they’ve been running the past 6 years. Your team is much better without Vick, believe me that is the resounding opinion being heard through out the league today. So all you Vick lovers; find another false god to worship. He’s done in the NFL. By the time he gets out he’ll be close to 35 anyway. Good job yesterday Falcons.

You could see confidence in Joey’s eyes each time he broke huddle and walked to the line of scrimmage. It’s obvious he’s read the playbook, cover to cover, over and over again.
MV7 has never mastered a playbook. He wouldn’t have mastered, or even memorized, the present one. Every Falcons offensive coach had to alter his playbook to fit the talents of MV7; that’s what they said anyway. The reality of the situation was that Vick wouldn’t/couldn’t learn a structured method of playing football. Coaches were forced to accommodate by dumbing the playbook down to sandlot level. Our current coaches would have been forced into that same predicament by MV7. By game 16, Vick would have known less about the playbook than Harrington knows RIGHT NOW! Harrington knows exactly what the coaches want, and knows exactly how to go about accomplishing it.
Vick was regressing before our very eyes. As each year went by he became less effective in securing wins; the measuring stick of any quarterback. His play became more and more sandlot, and less and less NFL.
Running is for running backs, passing is for quarterbacks. We had a running back playing quarterback, and a dumb-as-Hell running back at that!
The jettisoning of Ron Mexico is the best thing that ever happened to the Falcons. We finally have a QUARTERBACK, with a willingness to learn the system, and more than enough intelligence to pull it off.
Hats off to you Joey!!
GO FALCONS!!

The sad part is that if Joey was black then many of the Joey haters would be cheering his recent improvements. I did not realize what a racist town Atlanta has become. Maybe some of you Joey haters ought to call Rev’s Jackson and Sharpton to talk about the injustice of having a white QB in Atlanta. What a bunch of racism…..

Patrice: Joey may collapse and the season may be a bust — however, it was caused by the drama, disruption and disreputable behavior of the “star” quarterback — a person who chose to hang out with his dog-fighting homies and ignore theaffect his criminal behaviors would have on the fans, team and franchise.
Vick is gone — a story that is yesterday’s news. A talented athlete who went from the penthouse to the outhouse like Mike Tyson. All muscle, speed and agility, but not brain. Give it up. We win or lose with what we have and what we have is to be preferred to a quarterback with no character or ability to know the difference between right and wrong.

Ty Tanic, There is no BLACKout. If you buy the ticket and don’t show up, then I’m guessing you’re hurting yourself more than the team. Why don’t you spend your time asking Vick to turn his life over to God and give up the vices.
tiff, Get over yourself. You sure seem pretty mean to be calling others meanhearted. Get over yourself and follow Ty Tanic to Vick’s place.
BTW, I’m african-american. Vick deserves everything that’s coming to him.
To those hating on Harrington, The guy has performed well the last couple of weeks. true falcon fans are just hoping he builds on that. how about asking the OL to run block better? How about asking MeAngelo to just shut up and be a team player? How about asking what happened to Jimmy Williams? There are far more pressing issues than coming on this blog and crapping all over Harrington. Give the guy a break. No, he’s not Montana, but he is managing the game. The Falcons are coming along. Everything in the past - fugetaboutit - no one can change it. I’m more concerned with the future cause something can actually be done about that.
Offense showing great promise but still issues. Where is this great Ovie? For the highest paid fullback, I expect his name to be called on occasion for a run breaking block etc. Haven’t heard it. I know Petrino ‘s philosophy includes a power ground game which we just don’t have the back for that yet nor all the lineman needed. But I think he will make the best of what he has till personnel can be adjusted to fit this scheme.
The defense is still worrisome and I’m afraid it will cost us some games the remainder of the year. Too soft up the middle. Jackson just doesn’t seem as dominant this year. Brookings just isn’t a real impact player. Sanders at corner is looking no better than Webster. Pass rush has looked pretty anemic. Anderson so far a huge disappointment. I watched him off and on during the game and he was pretty much a non factor on most plays and wtf I swear I see this guy taking plays off! Inexcusable. Without a better pass rush we will continue to give up big passing yards. Abraham is the only one really pushing the pocket. Hopefully when Coleman returns and some lights a fire under Anderson’s a** then maybe the defense will make a big step forward.

Joey’s played really well the last two weeks, and hopefully this becomes a trend. Bobby Petrino’s offense is taking advantage of Joey’s skills in a way his previous coordinators in Detroit and Miami never managed to do. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. If you really think #7 wouldn’t have done equally well, if not more so, in this offense as a passer your knowledge of football is seriously limited. Just as Petrino deserves a lot of credit for turning Harrington into a very good passer the last two weeks, Jim Mora and Greg Knapp deserves a lot of blame for holding back Vick the last three seasons. You can say what you about Vick the person, but Vick the player was and still is an elite quarterback who was victimized by horrible coaching. In the few games that Knapp allowed Vick to drop back and pass like Harrington is currently doing, Vick responded with the best games of his career. That’s the truth.
In fact it’s really quite amazing how far the Mora regime set back this team. Who knows, maybe if DeAngelo Hall hadn’t been around the joke that is Mora his whole career, he wouldn’t have clashed so badly with Petrino.

Joey has played good and his recivers have caught the ball. With Vick gone there is no running game that a pure fact. What a messed up sub-culture that wants the Falcons to lose simply because Mike Vick got himself in trouble. The white man didn’t do it. He did it to himself.
You Sub-Saharan Nubian’s only live to support anything that is against the law, vulgar, or violent. John Edwards hit the nail on the head with his comments about your sub-culture last week.
Mike Vick probably sits back and laughs at you blind loyalists. He doesn’t give a hoot about you hoodrats. Why don’t y’all pay off his defaulted lines of credit for him?

native bird you have lost your mind. If joey was as good as you say why is this his third team over six years. you clueless fans love passer rating and not wins .Joey has only one win. I hope Joey keep it up but only time will tell. Like last year the offense was 12th in the NFL and the defense was 22nd. Joey learn from Vick run or get killed. 300 hundred pound line men hurt after a few good hit and joey all ready know that. Mobil QB is the way to go . pocket passer is a dieing breed! The old day are going fast for pocket passer why? Bigger faster defense linemen to block. other reason rule changes were to help protect the QB because of big huge defense linemen with speed. all in all you have less time to pass. this is not collage every body is fast!

NativeBird You are not fooling anyone. Your hate shows right your idiotic post. You don’t know me or know where I’m from. You might try counseling or anger management therapy to deal with your obvious hatred for anything white. GO FALCONS!

I’d gladly trust Joey with my kids…or my dogs. And so far, he’s doing a pretty good job. 23 of 29 aint too shabby.

I’m very hopeful with our first win and with Joey finally looking comfortable. No way am I ready to jump on the Joey train, but if he keeps improving, this season could turn out to be better than we thought. Let’s see how he performs in two weeks on MNF against the Giants. That’ll be a real test. Did you see their defense last night??

This is the first semblance of an offensive line Joey’s seen since he came into the league, and from what was said five years ago, the playbook at Oregon was on par with a lot of NFL playbooks. So it isn’t about the book, it’s about having a few guys around him who do their job. He averaged 4 dropped passes/game more than any other q’back last season. He’s a pocket passer, not a running back with an arm and no brain. I’m glad to have him here. Remember, we might have had another win except for a 9 year old defensive back…

Thank you Mets for taking the loser spotlight away from the Falcons long enough for them to actually win a game impressively.
It is possible that they could get hot and roll off a few victories… yes even with Joey H at QB. The guy hasn’t looked bad since the Falcons flipflopped on Leftwich and decided to give him some competition for his job. Looks like signing Leftwich may have provided the Falcons with two good QBs instead of just one.
Bring on the QB controversey back to the ATL.

All we needed was a good quarterback for our receivers to start stepping up. Obviously, Harrington is a better passer than Vick, that is why players like White and Jenkins are catching the ball. Every shot is not thrown like a laser, Vick watched his own commercials too many times, tried to throw it out of the Dome. Vick is a phenominal athlete, just not a great QB.

D Hall, how can you talk about the coach needs to earn respect considering you have lost everyones respect NOT BECAUSE OF YOUR BIG MOUTH, but because your teamates cannot trust you and count on you.
A team player who is more interested in winning than his personal stats would be more than happy to do WHATEVER THE COACH ASKS.
You have shown everyone with your actions and your big mouth and your ego and your uncontrollable emotions THAT YOU ARE NOT A TEAM PLAYER!
You do not have a clue what respect is.

Patrice are you as dumb as you look?
Chris Chandler took us to the Super Bowl, let’s pray Joey is as good as Chris.
Both are clearly real quarterbacks and they are leaders, while Vick was niether!

Native Bird: You are the biggest racist of them all. How could you possibly accuse some one of being racist and claim that this isn’t about race, then follow it up with a line like this…
“You, like your racist, and uneducated, conservative, rebel flag havin’, hating everything and everyone that doesn’t look like you and smell (wet-dog) like you transplant trash, are not intelligent enough to know that this is not about race”
So because we disagree with you and we think that what Vick did is wrong and because we support Joey then we are all of what you listed above. Including the wet dog reference. Which we all know is a racist joke that african americans use accusing white people of smelling like wet dogs when they get wet.
How is that not racist on your part? If a white person said that to you, you and your friends would be rioting and protesting all over the city.
The saddest thing about all of the posts here today is just how much racism still exists in this city. And I don’t see it ever changing. Wanna know why?
Because the vast majority of the racism in Atlanta today is from the african americans hating on white people. But you see, its not politically incorrect to be racist if you’re black. White people can’t say anything without being accused of being racist. But if you’re african american, asian, hispanic, whatever… It doesn’t matter what you say about whitey does it?
This city of african american racists is a joke!
I am ashamed to call it my home town.

I would expect nothing less.
The only problem is that I am from here which makes it that much worse.

Let’s not get to carried away. Harrington is doing a great job. Even more the receivers are even catching the ball. BUT what are the receivers going to do when they are being pressed by good corners. What is the defense going to do when a decent running back comes there way? We already know that the corners can’t cover it has been like that for years. The Falcons will possibly beat the Titans if Vince Young doesn’t run the ball any(there is no chance of that)and then there are the Saints twice. But don’t blame the QB for any of this because he has surprisingly played very well. Let’s just see if the rest of the team can do their jobs. Joey may be the best player on a bad team. Everyone always says he played on bad teams before, but why would anyone think this is a good team.
PS Get those ymca players out of the backfield and get some real running backs. Dunn has had his day so at least give Norwood a chance.

1-3.
Opposing teams have more film on The Falcons. (Example: This season’s Saints)
They will blitz earlier than The Texans.
The convenient dump-offs to Dunn will be watched more closely.
Regarding Hall’s meltdown: The Falcons were going to give-up the lead to The Panthers anyway. They could not stop the run late in the game. The same happened with The Texans. The offense goes cold in the late 3rd/early 4th quarter in what seems to be an attempt to “sit on leads” like they are not worthy of a victory anyway.
You can “steal wins” from time-to-time, but not Championships.
Unless you have the running game and the defense of The 2000 Baltimore Ravens.
