Following Larry Munson

Longtime UGA football radio play-by-play announcer Larry Munson met at length Tuesday with athletics director Damon Evans about possibly stepping down from the job he has held for 40 years.

Munson, 84, said health reasons prompted his discussion with Evans and indicated that athletics officials are “very carefully trying to set up contingency plans.”

If Munson does retire imminently, who should replace him? Which voice would you like to hear behind the mike calling UGA games?

And where do you place Munson in UGA’s football legacy? He never took the field as a player or a coach, but may be one of the most definitive figures in Bulldogs lore. What has he meant to you?

Larry Munson embodies one of the greatest traditions in college football. His legacy will reign on forever in the land of the Georgia faithful, and if this is “it” for our greatest playcaller ever, thanks for the memories Larry!

Larry Munson will always be synonomous with greatness! While Saturdays would never be the same without him, I think it might be best if he hung up the mic… After one more season health permiting! It’s just a shame he will have to miss the Dawgs National Championship season in 2008. It just does not seem right that another announcer will be able to step in to the perfect storm that is the 2008 Dawgs.

I love Larry but since cable and satellite went digital, you can’t turn the volume down on the TV and listen to Larry anymore. They just don’t sync up. Not even close. I haven’t watched a UGA game and listened to Larry in years. I wish him the best and hope that he does whatever is best for him, not for us.

Scott Howard should get first shot at replacing Larry. It is tough to replace a legend and it must be an insider. I rank Larry tied for third in Bulldog lore; 1.) Herschel Walker, 2.) Vince Dooley T3.) Munson and Mark Richt

Larry Munson is UGA football.Coaches (good and bad) come and go,but Larry has always been there, not “calling it as he sees it” , but describing the action for someone at home that cannot be at the game. He’s over the top sometimes, but that, dear friends, is personality. It is what makes us want to listen.I write this as a lifelong Arizona State fan transplanted to the south (east).I hope you Georgia fans realize how good you have had it with Mr.Munson.Just look up the road at the Tennessee Vols network. They lost longtime voice John Ward after the 1998 season.Could have had anybody in the country -(It’s that prominent a job)Who did they pick ? Local yokel Bob Kesling. He’s physically painful to listen to.You NEVER know the score, time remaining or anything important.Tons of mistakes. So, please,PLEASE, don’t pick some clown like him.Get the best announcer available and let it be his show.

Munson has been the perfect “homer” for the dawgs. As a professional broadcaster he sucks. UGA should get busy and find another “homer”. Doesn’t matter if he is any good.

Sometimes I listen to old Munson play calls during the off-season to get fired up about the Dawgs. Nothing else gets it going like old Larry. I hope to God he makes it back and in good health.

That said, if he can’t make it back, I like the following combination:

Play-by-play: Scott Howard Color: Buck Belue

Howard has got some of the “homer” in him, but probably wouldn’t home it up too much to avoid criticism he would be trying to be too much like Munson. I like Belue’s voice, being a south GA boy myself, and he would compare nicely to Kenny Stabler doing the color with Eli Gould at Alabama. Buck’s got a ring, a quarterback’s perspective, plus the 680 radio experience and some game-calling experience from CSS. Some might think Buck is too easy-going, but I think he’d do a great job.

As far as play-by-play goes, it’s been time for Munson to retire for years. I thought they should have let Howard do the play-by-play a few years ago, but keep Munson in the booth so he can yell about hobnail boots and keep telling the fans that the Dawgs have no chance in the game, even when playing Utah State. Larry is a great announcer, but relying on him for play-by-play is impossible. It’s fine if you’re watching on TV or at the game, but if you are just listening to the audio, he’s impossible. He can’t even see the players’ numbers. And, I definitely won’t miss him talking about fractions of a yard every down. Nessler would be a great choice. And, why don’t they add a color commentator? Howard and Belue? Nessler and Belue? Howard and Donnan!!

We love Larry Munson he will always be considered the voice of the Dawgs. We thought Coach Dooley couldn’t be repalced remember? Buck Belue doing play-by-play and Daryll “DJ” Jones as color analysts could make the Dawgs fans transition a little easier.

Georgia Football without Larry is like Dezi and no Lucy or Abbott witout Costello. Belue to Scott is just a long pass. Walker up the middle is just a run. There would have never been SUGAR falling from the sky. Larry from one Dawg fan who jump on in 1975 to another you are without a doubt the best thing to ever happen to Georgia Football since I have been a fan. You truly are our 12th man and you will be missed. Please try and give us one last season.

Yes! Please retire, Larry! I’m a die-hard dawg fan and can’t stand to listen to him. He’s senile and has one of the worst play-by-play calls of anyone out there. Just because he’s a homer and been at UGA forever doesn’t mean we should keep him on the air. He isn’t descriptive enough and doesn’t tell you the situation. You’re guessing half the time what’s going on unless you’re near a TV set. … Yes, let old battle axe get out of the box and put someone else in there who can paint the scene!

By NASCARfan

No… this isn’t happening. I refuse to believe this is happening.

Larry can’t retire without giving us a year to say goodbye. He just can’t go out without saying goodbye. We need that year. We need to say goodbye. Larry, I know you need a year to say goodbye.

Larry Munson is Georgia. And for the idiot Bugs who seem to not understand, he’s never apologized for being a homer or for saying “we.” We love him all the more for that. He isn’t Big Mouth John Madden calling games where he’s supposed to be unbiased (though have Madden call a Brett Favre game and see just how biased Madden can be). Larry is us. He is us in the booth telling us what is happening. He is our voice.

Larry, you can’t leave us without saying goodbye. Please, try to get better, and use this as your last year, as the Big Goodbye.

Thinking about this is depressing. The only name I can think of that I would want in the booth is forced to choose is maybe Buck Belue. I also think that Trev Alberts could do well. That’s it. No one else.

I am a transplanted USC TROJANS fan from Long Beach, CA. I moved here in 1997 and got my first taste of munson that year when they played Florida…I just admired the way he got into the game and it brought chills to me. I believe Georgia won the game and after hearing Munson I was hooked. Now I am no way a Bulldog fan but I have enjoyed the last 11 years listening to Larry do the games as I waited to watch the Trojans play. It was a dream of mine to have my Trojans play UGA in hopes of hearing Munson describe the game, alas that probably won’t happen but hey you can’t always get what you want. Larry, thank you for providing me with 11 great years of college football and if this is the end of the road for you know that this Trojan fan will miss you and I wish you all the best. I only wish I had moved here sooner.

For those who think that Brad Nessler would be a good replacement for Munson, are you joking? Seriously? Excellent point dawgbound. Buck Belue is always trashing UGA on 680. He WOULD be selling Insurance in Valdosta without the #1 Dawg. Hire Scott Howard for play-by-play. Munson will live on forever in Bulldog lore, much more than Hershel or Dooley or Richt. He is Georgia Football, and always will be. Wes Durham sucks.

Even as a Tech fan, but a lover of college football in general, you can’t help but love and respect Larry Munson and what he means to UGA football. I agree with the others who have suggested Scott Howard and/or Brad Nessler. Brad Nessler had done GT football as a color analyst early in his career and I was hoping they would get him back when Al Ciraldo retired. Wes Durham is well respected, but I think of him more as a generic announcer, not one who lives and dies with us, as Larry does with the Dawgs. I think a lot of Scott Howard and listen to him on 106.1, but even he won’t have the color and excitement that Larry brings each Saturday. He will be missed when he shuts down his microphone.

I’m 33, and for fans and alums around my age Larry is Georgia football. I was a little too young to truly appreciate Herschel and for the majority of games I’ve attended, someone other than Vince Dooley has been head coach. Larry was the one constant, from the painful Goff years to the great years we’ve had under Richt. But Scott Howard is the ONLY worhty replacement. He does a great job with basketball, bleeds red and black just like Larry but also has his own style. I would love to see Jeff Danzler move over with him to do the color but I think they will go with someone with actual college football experience, which is understandable. So I say would Tarkenton be interested? Zeier? Personally I don’t like Belue’s analysis on CSS. Trev Alberts or Mike Gottfried(now that he’s been demoted by ESPN to the noon game with the god awful Pam Ward he might do it)would also be fine choices. No matter when or who they choose, thanks for the memories Larry.

I am a UGA alum, and avid sports talk listener. Please listen to me when I say do not put Buck Belue on the air! If anyone has listened to this guy for more than 10 minutes, it is extremely apparent that he has no idea what he is talking about. His idea of breaking down the SEC is regurgitating what he read on espn.com and si.com. Also, if you have ever heard him do the Georgia games on CSS, he has no rap w/ any announcer, and his color is just as bush league as his radio. I am as big of a UGA fan as there is, but I have to admit that Belue is the biggest no talent piece of garbage in this town. I hate to say it, but give me Wes Durham over Belue any day of the week.

As a 1974 graduate of UGA, I know for certain that I speak for thousands of former students who will be delighted to see Munson leave. Munson has been an embarassment to UGA for far too long. I recall many times attending a UGA football game and listening to Munson in my radio earphone; it was as if I was watching one game and he was watching another. He gives a totally useless depiction of what is actually happening on the field…his “they’re in an I”, and “he flips the ball to a wideout” kinds of descriptions are meaningless to fans who have never played footbal, and confusing as hell to those who did play. The only thing equally as irritating and embarassing is his old but highly efeminate sidekick on the field who interviews Richt after the game. All I can say is HALLELUJAH!!! He is one of the main reasons people think UGA grads are as dumb as a sack of hammers; and he should have been put out to pasture 40 years ago!

By Heeldawg

The best radio college football announcer of all time. Other schools make up highlight videos using Munson’s descriptions because they are so colorful and entertaining. Remember “Run Lindsay?” Or “look at the sugar falling out of the sky?” or the “hobnailed boot?” Often I found myself wondering, “Now, where the heck did that come from?”

He’s a throwback, a true college football original, and he can never be replaced.

HOWEVER, he’s as big a Georgia fan as anyone. I expect him to be in the booth this fall as long is he is breathing. He can’t help it.

Ga fans won’t accept this, but Larry is soooo overrated its not even funny. His actual description of the game is horrible. Sure, he can be entertaining. But his job is to desribe the game as if you weren’t there. His normal description of a play—“the quarterback hands off to the tail for 5,6 ,7 on first down-then says “second and 8” just doesn’t get it. Good bye larry.

For four decades Munson has touched the entire Bulldog nation. It will never be the same. First, no one will EVER be able to replace him. Second, the person who is hired should not be hired because of his experience or connections to the University. Larry is from Minnesota and I think his job before the one with us was at Vandy. Whoever gets the job should be hired because:

1) he knows football 2) he is a football fan 3) he loves UGA football more than life itself

We don’t need some droning radio personality. We need a diehard Georgia fan. We need a person who will live and die with the team as we do. I think that they ought to have an open mike competition and allow members of the public to come in and tryout.

As far as what Larry means. Larry is, in a lot of ways, Bulldog football. He is as inseperable in my mind from the program as UGA himself. He embodies our passion and love for our football team. There is no one I’d rather win or lose with than Larry. The highs were always higher because of him. I’ll never forget the 1980 call in Jax. Or the ‘sugar is falling from the sky’ game at Auburn in 1982. Or the 2001 TN “hobnail boot” game. He is and will always be the “voice of the Georgia Bulldogs.”

Whoever replaces Larry will have a thankless job. He will be subject to ridicule and scorn. And for what its worth, it is my dream job and I’d do it for nearly nothing.

I was there in 1980 and before and after. Sitting on the tracks with my radio as a teen or if I could afford it in the end zone bleachers. In the band 1980 attended all games with my radio. Nobody is better at what they do. YES he’s a homer it’s part of the job. I will miss and mourn his absence if retirement comes to pass. Absolutely no better voice, no better verbal pictures, no better sound bites, no better person could take his place.

Do me a favor, if you don’t respect who he is and what he’s done. Get the hell out of here and shut up.

Munson is the voice of UGA football.

UGA would surely go to the DAWGS without Munson. He is UGA. What are we going to do…just what are we going to do if Larry does retire? Come on Larry…one more season…hunker down you guy. Don’t let ‘em replace you now. We need you more than ever. We need to have that sUGAr falling from the sky just one more time.

On a bad day, a couple larry munson highlights will get you on your feet. It can be on a saturday in the fall or a tuesday night in June. This is the article that we pray that would never be printed. Somehow, we hoped he would be eternal and call games forever. His highlights will be eternal. He will never be forgotten. Some say he wasn’t as good as he was in the 80’s, I say just like a fine bottle of wiskey, his voice gets better over time. It is sad to have to hope somebody will be half as good as he was. I know that the sun will come up tmrw and that we will see the dawgs play in 72 days, but we all know that there will never be another Larry Munson. Thank you for the chill bumps! I propose that we officially name the Oklahoma State game as ” larry munson day”. If he is not calling the game, I hope mark richt let’s munson lead the dawg walk. I hope that we give him a going away goodbay on the 50 yard line before the opening kick-off. Do you think that would give the players the motivation that Munson would want them to have going into battle. I propose that they rename the street that the dawg walk is on to ” Larry Munson Street”. Thanks for the memories!

Larry can do what ever he wants. After all these years you think its easy for him even to consider. Look at all he has given to UGA. He can never ever be replaced. I will support who ever takes his place just like Larry will. Why…. I love every thing about UGA football…. win or loss. PS Dog Catcher I would like to catch you. Post your name and see how may friends you have. If you live here now go back to where you came from.

Talking bad about Munson is like talking pointing out the flaws in a parent or relative. Larry has been synonomous with UGA football forever and ever it seems. I would love to be able for him to make one last cocktail party before calling it quits. However, I wish that he does what is best for him and not the Bulldawg Nation. All of this being said, the writing has been on the wall for quite some time now. Larry has been missing calls, missing players names, etc., for quite some time now. It got even noticibly worse this past season. Whatever happens, I wish Larry the best and hope for someone that can come close to replacing him.

I personally hope Larry does retire. While he is undeniably a legend, his work has dropped way off in the last few years. I’m not sure who will be selected but I know who I don’t wnat it to be. Scott Howard is marginal as a color man, horrible as a BB play by play and if chosen would force thousands to turn off thier radios. Neither he nor Jeff Dantzler should have a lead role on the broadcast. we expect professionalism from our coaches, etc and we should expect nothing less from the broadcst team.

He is a good play-by play man (although I would like him to give the score of the game a little more often.)

No one wants to see Larry go, but we all know that day is coming eventually. Whether it’s this year or some other time in the future I would be totally comfortable with Scott Howard taking over. He and Jeff Dantzler do an awesome job with basketball. He’s very professional, knows his stuff, he’s right on top of the action and most importantly of all, he makes everything seem larger than life. Maybe there’s someone out there even better but it just seems to me like Scott has been preparing for this for years now and he’d absolutely be ready.

Jeff Danztler. He was groomed by Coach McGill in Bulldog lore, and no other can hold a candle to his knowledge of Bulldog history and play by play description. While Munson has been the best annoucher in UGA history, technically the absolute BEST was Ed Thelinius. Jeff combines the best of those two greats!

As a fan of 10 years, I had to get a MBA from UGA to call the Dawgs my own. We have spent many days in front of the radio listening to games we couldn’t attend. The broadcasting has gone downhill and the impartial JP, CBS and ESPN2 coverages suck. Larry has not filled in the gap.
Jeff Dantzler is the natural candidate. He has forgotten more about UGA football stats then everyone has remembered. Forget “pantygate” and don’t put in Buck. The Maxie Price commericals pushed me to 790.
When was the last time you got excited to hear the breakdown on the 5th quarter show? It was when Dantzler ran it at Applebee’s and the callout to Western MI. He has info and the breakdown.

Like a lot of you I have so many fond memories of listening to Larry Munson. My family moved to Atlanta in 1985 and I can remember when my Dad and I first started listening to him on the radio. We thought he was hilarious. I went on to graduate from UGA and am a proud bulldog and forever a fan of Larry Munson.

I would love to see Scott and Jeff take over. I was upset when Larry stopped doing the UGA basketball games, but now I wouldn’t trade Scott and Jeff for anyone. Larry can’t be replaced, but they would do a great job.

We all knew that there would come a day when Munson would decide to retire, whether it be due to age(I mean, c’mon, he’s 84 years old) or his health, and as much as it puts a big knot in my stomach to even think about it, it’s a reality that all UGA fans will have to face at some point. My wife and I have had season tickets for years now and even though we are at the game, we both have our headsets on listening to Larry call the game right before us. He adds so much more to the game, I can’t even begin to explain, though if you listen to him, you know exactly what I mean. From a lifelong Dawg fan, I wish you nothing but the best and hope that you get better health wise and are able enjoy the legacy you’ve created here for Georgia football. As far as replacements, there are none, but if I had a vote, I would say Scott Howard and Jeff Danzler. Scott’s already got his feet wet calling the games with Larry, and Danzler is a true South Georgia boy who bleeds red and black with the best of them.I listen to him every chance I get on the Ref, and his knowledge of Georgia athletics, but more importantly Georgia football, I think makes him an excellent choice. Just my 2 cents worth is all.

I am a 20 year season ticket holder and listening to Larry as a young’in got me hooked on UGA football. At 55 years of age I still cannot wait to hear his voice. I simpley cannot understand anyone that does not care for his style of broadcast. I must live under rock, as I am stunned at the amount of posts that slam Larry. I am honored to have had the pleasure of hearing his voice all these years. He has given us all many, many memories and emotional moments. Hats off to retirement Larry and we pray for your health. As far as his replacement, I belive a homer would be good, but regardless, it will be no-win position to try and replace a legend. Time will tell…..

Just hunker down one more time, Larry. Munson is a legend, but c’mon men. Give Larry a break and let him retire if he wants to. Just let the man go fishing. He’s 84 dude. There’s a lot of fish still left in the lake. Scott Howard’s first choice for me. Solid. Not too fancy. Perfect follow-up because he won’t try to compete with Larry’s legend. Brad Nessler— sort of interesting choice but no way he’d dump his network gig. Leave Danzler on the call-in show. But Buck? no. No no. Maybe in 10 years.

Larry Munson is one of the last old school broadcasters. He is one of a kind and will never be replaced. Even though he has slipped some over past several years, UGA should keep him on the air as long as possible and rejoice that they were blessed with him calling their games. As we learned on Rocky Top, once the legandary announcer leaves the game broadcasts are just never quite the same.

I cannot believe I saw Matt Stewart’s name above as a candidate for the job. He is so tight and uncomfortable in his broadcasting, he forces lines like against Tech when he kept saying “good old fashioned hate” throughout the entire game. WE GET YOUR POINT MATT.

Scott Howard is the man. I don’t know why any Bulldog fan would not want a homer in the booth. I have listened to Scott Howard call the basketball games in years’ past and he paints a great picture of what’s going on and most importantly, detailed descriptions. His enthusiasm is contagious…

Let’s answer one question:

How many of us have held the same job for FORTY years and have been one of the best in the business at it? Sure Larry isn’t the Larry of 1980, but he’s been the voice of the Dawgs and always will be no matter what. I don’t care if Al Michaels, Mike Tirico, Brad Nessler or even Steak Shapiro (insert joke here) replaces Larry, he will get creamed after game 1 for not being Larry.

For you people who are taking shots at Larry, I’d love to see you do your current job when you turn 84. Let’s not make this a “larry should have hung it up years ago” post. Let’s honor him for his contributions to UGA football. He is a living legend and we will NEVER EVER see or hear someone like him EVER AGAIN.

I am only 28 years old. Munson got the job before my parents even met and they’ve been married since 1972.

You may not like Larry or UGA, but if you don’t show him the respect he has greatly earned you are showing everyone reading this blog that you are a miserable human being who makes jokes at a gentleman who has been the gold standard for radio broadcasting for decades.

G-d bless you Larry Munson and Go Dawgs.

I heard the news on the way home today on 680 The Fan, and man, it was a tear jerker… only the thought of Larry not being in the booth could do that. He should do what is right for him and not anyone else.

But you know how in Futurama they have the famous talking heads in glass jars? Too bad we won’t be able to do that for Larry. He could live on forever!

UGA and the Dawgs will NEVER be the same without him.

I called my bro up at Georgia to tell him the news; he had, of course, already heard the news, and I’ve never heard him seem so sad.

Hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy Larry’s voice for another season or two.

I wish Larry the very best and best wishes in whatever he chooses to do. He will always be a true hero to the Bulldog faithful. His voice, his style, his humor are irreplaceable.

Retire. Good riddance. Worst commentator ever….sober or drunk (usually three (…four, or five)sheets to the wind). He has no idea who the players are, so whenever there’s a big play, he can only scream, “WE DID IT!”…”WE GOT IT!”…”WE SACKED HIM!”…”WE WE WE WE WE WE…..” Pathetic. His retirement would be long overdue. No real knowledge of the game or the team….just like all of the Moron Bulldog Nation in the stands.

Chip Carey would be far and away the best replacement. UGA grad, great voice, fantastic play-by-play experience in both baseball (Braves) and football (he did play-by-play for the NFL when he was at Fox). He’s got the excitement, energy, and can become a legend in his own right over time. Scott Howard is a good guy, but he’s more of an analyst versus an exciting play-by-play announcer that will get you pumped to be listening to the Dawgs. HIRE CHIP CAREY!!!!!

As sad as this is, it has been inevitable. Munson is and always will be Georgia football! He is in essence irreplaceable, but we have to realize that this time would come. I think Scott Howard would be the best choice to replace him, especially since he’s already in the box with Munson. Give Scott or any other announcer 40 years in the box and we’ll be saying the same things.

But to be quite honest, I really don’t get to listen to Munson anymore except in the car. It seems that WSB airs the broadcasts practically a full 10 seconds ahead of the television, I’ve gotten to where I can’t watch the game and listen to Munson at the same time without hearing who caught the pass before seeing the QB throw the ball!

I would love for Munson to call the 2007 season, and maybe one or two more, but it won’t surpsrise me if he doesn’t.

Larry, you’re a key component to Georgia football, and when your time comes to hang it up, you will definitely be missed!

I love Munson. No, the audio doesn’t sync to cable, but I wouldn’t dare turn off my radio. There is no passion in television announcers. They’re paid by the network and know and care just as much about UGA as they do about Arkansas Tech. Cookie cutters, the whole lot of them.

I understand he has health problems, but for selfish reasons, I want him to go one more year.

You see, I am from Berrien County, where football and success have never gone hand in hand. Collegiate players are a rarity for us and we have one, one that might see playing time this year. What magic it would be to hear Munson utter his name. Perhaps Scott Howard throw in where the kid is from. If we’re extremely lucky, maybe Larry will acknowledge our meager existence.

My suggestion for a replacement? I don’t know his name, but there’s an individual who does play-by-play for Coffee County. Sounds just like Munson and does a good job calling the games, unlike the usual crew of high school announcers.

Growing up in Athens, I listened to Larry’s broadcast of many away games that I didn’t get a chance to attend. He always brought the thrills, excitement and feeling of the game to my radio. His “off the wall” descriptions of specific plays and his style of play by play announcing has made him a legend not only to most UGA fans, but to many others around the south and the SEC. I now live in South Florida, so I don’t get the chance to hear him anymore, but I have a great respect for a man that certainly brought me and many others the good times and bad of UGA football. Greatest traditions in football ? Larry Munson is only a legend to the red colored glasses wearing dreamers of uga faithful. His side kick sounds as if he and his boyfriend had a fight the night before and is completely clueless as to how football is actually played. Where is the greatest football tradition from? Are you comparing uga to Notre Dame or USC or even Alabama ? if so you are as cluless as Munson’s sideshow ! There are 4 other team’s in the SEC alone with greater football tradition than does Georgia ! Munson please for the sake of the Georgia insane “See YA !”

I doubt Munson is going to retire right now. He will be there one more year, but when he does retire PLEASE GOD NO JEFF DANTZLER. Scott Howard and Matt Stewart might be a good combo. Whoever the color man is (other than Dantzler) would be a good with Scott. Scott has earned a shot at doing the play by play, but Dantzler needs to stick to women’s basketball only and let someone else do football and baseball.

I am an Alabama Fan and even I love Larry Munson. So much character, so much passion and such a unique and different delivery of the play by play.

Georgia Fans are so lucky to have him and I just wish he could have one more fanstastic season before his health takes a toll on him.

I will mourn with all of you Georgia fans if he retires.

Funny how folks knock opinion’s of who should replace Larry, but offer no candidate of their own.

I can hear Larry now;

“Man when you’re the best, they really take shots at you don’t they”

But at UGA we’re used to that envy.

It’s a nice position to be in.

Been listening to Larry for all these years and have loved his personna. No one should be “forced” by the public to stay in a job when the body sends another message. We all know that all things end. Get out while you are on top Larry and take a farewell “lap” around the SEC as a fan.
How about Dave Neal as a candidate? Young and local and talented.

Who else can say with such great emotion “Look at the sugar falling from the sky….” or “Lindsey Scott, Lindsey Scott - Oh my God Lindsey Scott!” He’s just not someone you replace. I hope his health returns before September, when football season starts. Announcing is Larry’s life and although selfish I want to have him as long as I can!

This is a little crazy, but as I was reading the story, a tear came to my eye. Larry is just one of those constants that you navigate by. My first Ga game was Ga-Vandy - 1974. It didn’t take me long to become a Munson fan. Now, all these years later, yet another of my ties to that older era is about ready to fade away. I know - it is to be expected. Hey - I cry at funerals - why not now?

Buck Belue, Jeff Danzler and/or Buck’s pal in Destin Max Howell in any combination. No one mentioned has Max’s knowledge. He’s not UGA but I think he may be a Georgia native (like Coach Dooley he went to Auburn). Like our pretty good current coach he coached at Florida State. And he can be almost as passionate as Larry. LM is irreplaceable. But unfortunately he is only immortal in memory.I hope he takes at least a year to say goodbye. I don’t like to think about it.

I would miss Munson as would most, and would like to hear him do one more season, but no one could blame the guy for stepping down due to health concerns. No one will ever truly replace Larry Munson. But the cold, hard reality is, someone will have to.

Scott Howard is the only person I would consider doing the play-by-play. He is a “homer” but he is also an excellent broadcaster. Howard also has that “thing” about his voice that all good - great broadcaster’s have. He has a tone, ring about it that stays with you and the energy to go along with it is undeniable.

Howard is a professional that brings a proven track record and an unquestionable love for the school. I also like Belue on the color and let’s find someone to replace Loran on the sideline. I’d rather listen to Uga bark back a message to Scott than endure more of Loran’s “insightful” musings.

Losing Munson in the booth is a lot like having our “hearts ripped right out”. The announcer who “picks them up and stuffs them back in” has an almost impossible job to do. Most of the people who have posted a comment understand that Munson is more than just an announcer, he is the voice of the Dawgs and the heart of Georgia pride.
The naysayers and Munson haters just don’t get it. Some aren’t true football fans, others are Tech fans, and some lack the sense of pride and heart that make the Georgia fanbase so passionate and devoted. Since long before I entered this world, Larry Munson has instilled that passion and pride in the Georgia faithful. His voice has been our heart and soul time and again. Our hearts have soared when Munson introduced Georgia to Herschel Walker “My God a Freshmen!”; when Munson told Lindsay Scott to “Run Lindsay Run!”; when “Old Lady Luck saved our whatchamacallits” on the goal line at Auburn; and when we “stepped on their face with a hobnail boot and broke their nose” at Tennessee. Our hearts skipped a beat when Munson pleaded with the defense to “hunker it down one more time” against Auburn; When David Green found Michael Johnson in the back of the endzone against Auburn; and the numerous times some opponent has made a late drive to “break our hearts” and one miracle after another has saved us.
The great calls Larry Munson has made over the years are innumerable. His negativity in the pre-game is at times a little over the top, but when the Dawgs are on a roll, and Munson gets going, nothing tops that passion and excitement. Our heartbeat increases, our eyes widen and we all yell a little louder for the Dawgs when Larry Munson is tellin’ us how a Dawg just made a “heckuva” catch or run.
It would be selfish on our part to ask Larry Munson to sacrifice his health and his time to give us one more year of his hallowed voice. It will be missed, and our hearts will break some when another voice takes over the play-by-play. But broken hearts mend, and there will always be a big place in our hearts for Larry Munson

As a non dawg, I have only heard Larry call games over the past few years. I think he adds more to the UGA “experience” as a personality than as an announcer. I’m not sure what he was like years ago, but he just can’t keep up with the game. His use of “we” and “They” drives me crazy. I have no problem with him being a homer. The best college football announcer was as big of a homer as they get (Bob Ufer at Michigan). Larry says things like “Their guy ran to the right and our guy tackled him”. Who ran to the right? Who tackled him? On radio, we don’t know if you don’t tell us!

The man is 84 years old so I’m not slamming him, it just seem to be time to move on for both him and UGA.

I’m not a Georgia fan, but Munson is absolutely irreplaceable. I think he is the top college football radio play by play announcer ever (along with former LSU play by play man John Ferguson).

Although he is definitely a homer, I’m fine with it because Munson’s knowledge of the game is so obvious to any listener during a Georgia broadcast. (“It’s getting late, reaaally, reaaally late, Georgia trails by three and some how, some way the Junkyard Dawgs have to force a punt, even though they’ve been pushed around all day”).

Munson’s ability to tell it like it is, whether the Dawgs are playing great, mediocre, or horribly has always given him credibility with Georgia fans and fans like me who can take or leave the Dawgs.

One can argue that Munson has certainly been the most visible figure ever in Georgia athletics because he has been the one constant voice over the Georgia airwaves for 40 years.

Even though Georgia athletics would not be what they are without icons like Dooley and Magill, Munson has the been one person whose opinion that Bulldog fans could count on hearing on every autumn Saturday in regard to Georgia’s most high profile sport.

Personally, I would like to see Munson make a farewell tour during the 2007 season (health permitting) and have a chance to let thousands of Georgia fans honor him for the listening enjoyment he has provided them for so long.

For almost every Georgia football fan that is 55 years old or less, Munson is the only voice they have ever known and I must say that all of you should consider yourselves extremely lucky.

Plus, a final farewell season would allow Georgia officials plenty of time to make a decision on Larry’s replacement without having to rush into it.

When one thinks of SEC football, you think of all the great teams, rivals, traditions and yes….the voices of the game. Larry Munson is indeed a true and unique voice of Georgia football and the SEC.

First and foremost, I am a Gator fan. However, I must admit, when our two school gather on the banks of the St. John River for the annual “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”, I turn the dial and listen to Larry call the game. He is Georgia Football!

I first listened to him call the games as a six year old child when my Dad (UGA Class of 47)listened to his beloved Dawgs on the radio. Later, My dad and I would attend the annual Florida-Georgia game together. I did not miss a game for 37 straight years (my father died in 1999) until last year. It was hard to break tradition, but I look forward to attending next year’s game and begining a new streak. When Larry hangs up the mike for the last time (if he hadn’t already done so) it will be hard to say goodbye. Old streaks end and new traditions begin.

For years, the Voice of the Gators was a person by the name of Ottis Boggs. When he retired, we wondered who was going to replace him. It took a few years until we discovered Mic Hubbert — “Oh My!”

I hope that, health permitting, that Larry Munson will get to call more Georgia football games in the future. If not, thanks for the memories…but I must say that I enjoyed the last 17 years of him calling the Florida - Georgia game rather than my first 20 years of him calling this game.

Remember Dawg fans….there will be somebody to succeed Larry in the booth but never will anybody be able to replace him.

(P.S. Maybe you can see if Coach Goff is interested….)

I grew up listening to Larry since 1980, heard the call live as a 12 year old when Herschel ran over the Tennessee linebacker. I have always listened to Larry on the radio and muted the TV when at home. He is an icon of UGA football. However, I have noticed in the last couple of years that he has become less melodramatic, less excited about his playcalling, deferring to other broadcasters around him to paint the picture. He will always be one of my favorite sports broadcasters, up there with Skip and Pete for the Braves. At the very least, it is time for him to cut back some, focus on the time he has left on this earth with his family. I like the idea of home games only, if his health is up to it. I respect the man for who he is, and would miss him dearly, but “a man has to know his limitations”, especially at his age and health status. Thank you Larry for dragging me through adolescence and into adulthood every fall weekend with football commentary that brought images and plays to life in my head I will never forget. I am sure we will all be praying for you and the decisions you will be making soon.

Who is the fool that wants Wes Durham? You have to listen to about 10 minutes of a GT game just to find out what the score is - same with the Falcons. This guy is terrible! No excitement at all. How about Chip Carey? Scott Howard might be most deserving of a chance.

For the morons complaining about Munson being a “homer”, would you have preferred a calm “Touchdown, Lindsay Scott” or “for a Freshman, that Herschel Walker sure runs tough”, or “these Georgia fans sure are excited” or “Kevin Butler made a really long kick to win the game”. Does he miss a few or get few incorrect? Yes. But,who is better at the big moment?

I grew up on Munson. I have memorized all the great calls. The voice of my youth is Larry. I was 9 years old in 1980 and when I hear those calls, I remember sitting on floor of my home listening with my Family to no other sound than the old stereo turned up. I will be devasted when the news is official, but time marches on. All we can hope for in the replacement is a unique voice with a flair for the dramatic and an intense fan’s love for the DAWGS.

John Ferguson at LSU, John Forney at Alabama, John Ward at Tennessee, and Caywood Ledford at Kentucky were far better at play-by-play than Larry Munson. What Munson has done better is to maintain the link to the past when the Bulldogs were legitimate contenders in the SEC. I vote for Scott Howard.

As a ‘98 grad of the University, I hate to see Larry leave. Although his calls have diminished in recent years, his style was a fantastic throwback to the years when people calling games A) actually cared about what they were calling, and B) were gifted with enough vocabulary and style to make any contest heard seem like a life-or-death situation. Larry may have been many things, but boring was never one of them.

And if you want your games to be souless, corporate, sleep-inducing affairs, keep right on pushing for Buck Belue and Matt Stewart. And while you’re at it, tack on Belue’s arrogant jerk of a radio pal, Kincaid - nothing like a Yankee who seems to resent living in the South offering commentary on a culture that completely escapes him. I don’t always catch every game (if I can’t listen, then I go online for the recap) even if they’re televised - so I bust my butt to find friends that TiVoed it, and watch it there. I WILL NOT WATCH THE CSS REPLAY BECAUSE OF STEWART AND BELUE! And if that became the permanent arrangement…dear Lord I might have to give up UGA radio broadcasts.

My vote, and call me a traitor if you want, would be for Wes Durham. And if you can’t get Wes, get Scott Howard. They have very similar styles, are thoroughly prepared, have enthusiasm and personality, as well as some dang good pipes.

Replacing Larry is the wrong word as no one can replace him and I hope he can continue. The smoothest, best choice is a voice we’re all use to hearing and that’s Scott Howard. You won’t get many complaints on him. I’ve listened to him do basketball and have enjoyed his play by play. He’s a homer. For color I’ve been thinking Hondo Williamson but if he’s not interested, Belue would work fine for the Dawg Nation. If you go with an outsider for play by play you’ll spend countless energy hours defending your decision. Go Dawgs! Go Larry!

When both my Mom and Dad went to the University of Georgia….as well as my father’s family ( a very long time ago)gave some of the original land in Clarke County that is now part of the old campus…in addition to I married a Georgia Bulldog and her family are Georgia Bulldogs…well, you see the point, I’ve got no choice but to make Georgia my SECOND favorite team. In all seriousness, I love to watch UGA football and listen to Munson…a truly enjoyable part of my football saturdays!(Thanks ESPN Gameplan!)I hope Georgia wins every game except the one against Florida.

I agree with an early posting that your AD needs to name the booth after Munson and your boosters should erect a statute of Munson — as he would be calling a Georgia game — at Sanford Stadium. That way, all future Georgia fans will be able to ask their fathers and grandfathers about who Larry Munson was and what he meant to Georgia football. You have similar tributes to past UGAs as well as a statute of former UGA President Sanford in your stadium. Start the effort and add to another symbol of Georgia football and the legacy of what has taken place between the Hedges!

Good luck in 2007 …may you win all but one game!…and yes, I hope the good Lord will allow Larry to call the games and receive the tributes he deserves from around the league!

Buck, like Larry would certainly do the football commentary justice, and “Larry like”, Buck comes across as your friend and he is on your side, the BulllDog Nation….besides Larry’s legendary calls of the game, Larry makes you feel like he is talking directly to the fan…. UGA, consider Buck Belue…..I wish and pray good health for Larry. Thanks, Terry Young, Columbus, GA.

Lindsay Scott!” Lindsay Scott!” Lindsay Scott!” Who can forget that call? Sure he’s 84 now and doesn’t have the energy he once had, but if you grew up on Georgia football like I did in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, there’s noone better. Have you heard Florida’s guy, he’s horrible and that’s an established program that just won a national championship. Eli Gold at Alabama is ok but still not in the same league. Gene Deckerhoff at FSU has a great voice and comes closest to generating the home crowd excitement of college football. But Larry Munson is in a class by himself. Since the “Appleby to Washington” call, Larry Munson “is” Georgia Football. Sorry to see you go you Hairy Dawg. We’ll miss you.

Larry brother your a legend you always be remembered for your homerism and your loyalty to UGA not to mention your great calls. But brother there comes a time in life when its time to step away and enjoy the few years we have left with family and friends because it just goes by too quick. It pains me to say that because I grew up in your “golden era” and I think you were one of the best things that could have happened to our program when you came along. But now you have come to another turn in life and its golden too but called the golden years (even though from what I hear its not too golden, ha ha). Take time for yourself you’ve earned Larry come to the games go to the club meetings but do it on your time brother.

AS 86GOPgator (nice post) of all people posted above I hope when you decide if this year or next or another the SEC will honor you around the league for your wonderful contributions.

You hillbillies are clueless if you think Munson is some sort of broadcasting god. Dementia set in for Munson years ago, back when he did games for the Falcons…..Why do you think they cut him loose? He’s the worst broadcaster in big time college sports. He misses plays, mispronounces players names and has no idea what he is doing or where he is. You rednecks are so stuck on tradition that you will tolerate a doddering old man as the face of broadcast excellence…..Of course, why should I be surprised. Yes a 100 years of history. Look it up. It’s actually more but I just rounded off. Just because of the 80’ Nat’l C’ship doesn’t mean we don’t have tradition. Puh-leeze. You know it. If you have any intelligence, you know that we are one of the most storied programs in ALL of college football even if we don’t have all the c’ships that some do. We also have a nickname ” Tailback U.” What is Floriduh’s? I believe, and I haven’t looked recently that we are in the top 10 in all time wins. Again, that would be called history/tradition. Michigan is 1st and ND is 2nd. Are you gonna tell me that they don’t have tradition? Like I said earlier..FLA wasn’t even on the college football map till Spurrier arrived and you know it. Just because you knew of Fla as well as it’s alumnus doesn’t mean the rest of the country did. People HAVE and will alwyays KNOW of UGA football. Write it down.

“Oh My?” That’s original. I believe Dick Enberg has used that for years when desribing figure skating during the winter olympics.

Congrats on your more recent Nat’l Title. You got me there. Big Deal. I guess that means Half A* U (FSU) is better than us and has more history too. Like Floriduh, they were nothing till Bowden showed up in the 70’s. You may brag now that you have more history than FSU.

I do however agree with you on one thing… Verne Lundquist is horrible.

As I have always said, sure he’s a homer, but he’s OUR homer! Besides all of that, Larry is a quintessential broadcasting legend. Over the last five years, I have been listening to former UGA QB Preston Jones do play by play for one of the local high school football networks and he does an outstanding job. He has a great voice and provides tremendous insight from his QB perspective from his playing days on the college and pro level. He is very professional while bringing a “homer” attitude to his broadcasts. I think Scott Howard would be the likely choice to replace Larry however a former UGA QB with Jones’ experience to paint an excellent picture would be a good choice. Larry Munson to me is like a storyteller and teacher.I have listen to Mr. Munson since the 4th quarter of the 1979 Auburn game and enjoyed his calls for 27 years. I live in Pickens,S.C. near Clemson. On those fall Saturdays, I am listening to Mr. Munson.

I love it when he talks about the old days of football, mainly during those periods between 1935 to 1970, because I enjoy learning about the history of the game I enjoy in the fall.I might be the only 43 year old male who enjoy listening to games on radio than looking at it on T.V. I am going to miss listening to him when he retire. I remember last fall when he was talking to Boortz about his health problems. If I was Mr.Munson’s doctor, I would give him this advice,”Larry, it is your call and have the time of your life while on this earth. The lake is calling and the 7p.m movie is about to start. Also, the booth like to hear your voice one more time”.

Scott Howard would be a good choice. The state of Georgia is bless to have a lot of good play by play voices.

I grew up listening to Larry. I joined the military and spent 26 years bouncing around listening to everybody else’s announcer. Now that I’m retired, I can honestly say no other team’s announcer can hold a candle to Larry Munson. He is the cream of the crop. Maybe it is time for him to go but I’m just plain greedy because I want at least one more year from him.

Brad Nessler and his big voice is definitely the best available replacement for the legend.

It is time for Munson to go, only one person with the voice, exciting personality and knows how to do the play calling, Jeff Dantzler, certainly none of the others qualify.

I like what Macon Dawg said … we all probably remember exactly where we were when we heard “Appleby to Washington,” “My God, he’s running over people,” and, of course, “Run, Lindsay, Run.” These memories kept us alive in the lean years. I live in Auburn, Alabama, so I’m pretty alone down here. But even the AU fans will acknowledge that Munson is the greatest.

Replacement? I’d never thought of it until I read it in an earlier comment, but I like Trev Albert. He was always picking the Dogs when he was with ESPN.

CHUCK DOWDLE AND/OR BILL HARTMAN from WSB TV. Both are UGA alumni and Chuck played basketball at UGA, whill Bill’s father was Coach Hartman, who coached UGA kickers for years.

They are both polished and experienced and UGA alums.

at first i thought his comment about not doing road games was a ploy to help scott howard. it would give howard a leg up for one year, then larry would retire. but then i heard larry had fallen. i fell a couple of times while walking, and you will slow down a lot, use a cane or a walker, whatever you have to do to keep it from happening again. he fell in the bathroom, and i am nowhere near in that much trouble. i think he is just hopeful he can finish out the season with home games.

Munson during the “Golden Years” when I attended UGA…was simply AWESOME; however Neil Williamson would be a great replacement. GO HONDO!!!

I figured there would be some idiotic replies, and I was right. Only a crack head would suggest Wes Durham and his limited vocabulary, and Buck Belue is not going to work. I LOVE Scott Howard and Jeff Dantzler as options. Chip Caray sounds good. I just hope we don’t end up with a loser like that UT guy that replaced John Ward or that pansie that announces Florida games. FSU has a TERRIFIC announcer…we can only hope for somebody that good. Otherwise, I will leave my radio at home.

I think Scott Howard & Jeff Dantzler deserve a shot if they do good job on the road games then were set, end of the story. If not then we’ll know we need to look around. I also think it’s time for Lauren to retire as well & I think either Buck Blue or Kevin Butler would be a good fits to replace him. Honndo could do that role as well but keep him out of the booth.

However if the trial run fails then we need look around. Here’s my rundown of some of the options mentioned & some I thought off:

Wes Durham -I’ve always said if you want a good quality announcer to replace Larry, Wes would be good but with the politics involved he’s not coming to UGA, he’ll end up replacing his dad an UNC.
Brad Nessler - The money wouldn’t be right but he might take less to be home more often. Ron Franklin – Great on ESPN & would love to have him but money would be the issue again. Chip Carrey - I’d love to have him but would he be willing to leave the braves &\or could he do them until football started? If WSB still had the Braves then yes, but how it stands now I don’t think so. Verne Lundquist – CBS should replace him so why would we want him, plus he’s retirement age as well, if were going to move on it needs to be with someone that’s can be here a few years Dave Neal - Would be a good choice but I think he likes doing the SEC games to much & wouldn’t want to be tied to one school. Plus he could move up to CBS or ESPN eventually which is what I think he’s aiming for. Bob Neal – would be a good interim gap filler in for then next 5 to 10 years. Matt Stewart, Jeff Hullinger, Bill Hartman or Chuck Dowdel, Randy Waterman – Let’s be serious! NO WAY, any of these guys need to be anywhere near the UGA announce booth. Matt needs to go from the CSS broadcast as it is. John Kenncade & Buck Blue – 680 is pushing this on there morning show, Buck might be good as color or sideline guy but he doesn’t need to bring John with him. Kenncade is good at attacking to cover up his faults or to stir up emotions we don’t need his kind associated with UGA not even to replace Matt Stewart on CSS.

Maybe there’s an announcer out there somewhere at another school like Larry & Wes were at Vandy that would be a good fit. There’s not going to be another Larry so let’s just find a great play by play guy that can’t paint the picture
