How will Robinson be remembered?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What will the late, great Grambling State University football coach Eddie Robinson be remembered for most?
As one of the winningest coaches ever?
As an educator?
As a molder of men?
As an athletic administration pioneer?
Or all of the above.
Robinson was 88 when he passed away late Tuesday night; he’d suffered from poor health for years after retiring in 1997 with 408 victories over 57 seasons at Grambling. During his tenure, more than 200 former Grambling players went on to the NFL.
In your opinion, what’s Robinson’s true legacy?

Coach Rob’s nurturing philosophy impacted the lives of so many young people. Yes, he was a legend, yet humble… a gentle tiger. I was there when he won his 400th game and received a call from President Clinton on the field of the stadium bearing his own name. That was a day I will never forget. I can imagine the words that are undoubtedly resounding on this, his journey home: “Well done, my servant. Well done!”

Coach Rob emboldened and provided a very structured environment to a number of young men who may not have been accustomed to such. He is truly a stand up guy, and the winds will echo his name for years. You can sleep now Coach Rob you earned it … RIP.

I had the pleasure of doing an Intership with him during his Spring Training 1991-WHAT A JOY and WHAT A HECK OF A MAN…he would go home and have lunch with his wife every day! Soup and Sandwich. I was the only female in a early test program that pains me now that I did not continue on with. Thank you Doug W.

I was at Grambling when Coach Rob broker Bear Bryant’s record. What an accomplishment. He was a very gentle tiger. He had a grin that was so huge. And if he saw you ten times a day, he would speak to you 10 times a day. He was a man of all men! He made such an impact on the players. He’ll be remembered as the best college football coach in the world. Not the best “African American” coach…the BEST COACH! Rest in peace Coach Rob. You’ve served your time here on earth with so much dignity! This world will miss you!

I remember seeing Coach Rob everyday when I was at Gram. HIs office was near my freashman year dorm. Each time I saw him I got chills because I felt that I was in the presence of greatness! If I had played football there would have been no question where I would have played. My grandfather was a big fan of his and would have had it no other way. RIP Coach Rob……

It is my fervent hope that they will get the problems with the Eddie Robinson Foundation sorted out - it is tarnishing his legacy - whomever is culpable needs to be brought to justice and the reigns should be handed over to someone capable of continuing his legacy of greatness and achievement

Eddie Robinson will be remembered as one of the greatest coaches, not black coaches of all time. There should be a classic football game named after him if there isn’t already one. This is a man that I highly respect in sports period. He was someone you could look up to even if you didn’t play for him. Eddie Robinson was Black College Football, and made you appreciate what Black College Football was all about. It was about opportunity for the black athlete who wasn’t givin a chance to play at the so called division-1 level. I will truly always remember this pioneer, visionary, great man of all sports. Thank you Eddie Robinson and we Love You!!!
