An invitation to crash the party

Tuesday marks the debut of ajc.com’s daily coverage of the March to Atlanta, and this is the first installment of our Party Crashers segment.

This week we’re starting off our weekly roundup of potential NCAA tournament Party Crashers — those who may not look like the most obvious choices — who may drop in when Selection Sunday comes around.

Last year George Mason pulled off a shocker in reaching the Final Four out of the Colonial Athletic Association. The slumping Patriots may be supplanted by Hofstra, which has a record of 17-6 and an RPI in the 60s. The Pride fell to Delaware Monday but strengthened its case with a win over league-leading Virginia Commonwealth this week. Hofstra also has been chosen to play in ESPNU’s “BracketBusters” extravaganza against Holy Cross on Feb. 17.

Out in the Mountain West Conference, Brigham Young stunned nationally ranked Air Force Saturday to improve to 16-6. The Cougars, with an RPI in the 50s, have another big league game Saturday against streaking UNLV, which is led by ex-Atlanta Hawks and Illinois coach Lon Kruger.

Who are your Party Crashers? They don’t have to be from mid-major or small conferences. They can be from the bigger leagues as well. Which of these teams do you think will get NCAA invitations? And do you think there’s another George Mason brewing out there?
