Should Falcons pursue Cowher?

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher announced Friday he’s retiring after 15 seasons to spend more time with his family, and that he’s not immediately interested in any other NFL coaching vacancies.

His decision may affect the Falcons’ search for a replacement for the fired Jim Mora, since the team on Thursday interviewed Steelers’ offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. He figured to be prominent on Pittsburgh GM Dan Rooney’s list to succeed Cowher.

But what would you think of the Falcons pursuing Cowher? He’s a Super Bowl winner, he has molded a close-knit group of athletes and served as a gruff, tough but successful mentor who has generated the loyalty of players, team officials and fans alike.

Is that the coaching profile the Falcons need? What do you think of Arthur Blank’s and Rich McKay’s selection of coordinators — with no previous NFL head coaching experience — to interview at the start of the hiring process? Can they get a more experienced man?

Cowher moved his family to Raleigh, N.C. last year. Would that be close enough to Atlanta for Blank to turn on the charm and try to hire a championship coach for the Falcons?

Just let Cowher rest… He has earned a break and he will retunr to coaching in a couple of years. We should have a good handle on the new Falcons coach by then and if we need to we can go after him then if he is available.

are you really this dumb? Is this the best article you could come up with? Go after the coach who is retiring so that he can rest and spend more time with his family? This is the article you write? WOW. No we should NOT go after a coach that is retiring. There, now that you have your answer can somone write a story about something someone actually cares about? jeez

Exactly MIKE… It is only been there for the second day. LOL. Cowher will not be available without giving up draft picks/compensation until after the 07 season so let him be unless you are wanting Gregg Take A Knapp or Ed Zonatell to be the Interim Coaches for a year. Yeah right!

No, absolutely not. Why bring somebody in who can win when we’re much happier (especially on the blogs) being miserable and insulting in our losing?

Why mess with a [good] thing? A good owner would try to get him. A great owner would find a way to get it done.

A phone call to Raleigh wouldn’t hurt, but I don’t want to see us losing draft picks (which should be used to refresh the line and corners.)

AJC should also update their coach poll, taking off Mooch and Martz!

let’s face it the falcons are snakebitten and no matter the owner, the coach, the gm or the players they will never be able to get over the hump - they’ve tried everything - a dome, black helmets, leaving tickets for elvis, run and shoot, $100 season tickets, you name it theyve tried it - their best bet is to let the fans call the shots - set up online polls to determine who they hire and who they draft, etc.

If he is available why not? How many times have you resigned for one reason and told your boss something different. Hell at least we know Cowher can win a championship and coach a QB like Vick (i.e Slash with only a fraction of Vick’s talent).

By slim

January 5, 2007 02:13 PM | Link to this

Cowher is clearly a great coach, and Whisenhunt is probably good too, but I’d never wish this Falcons job on either of them.

The new coach has no choice in starting QB—it’s vick no matter what. Vick will pout and whine and subtlely throw his coaches and teammates under the bus when things go bad. Not a great situation for a new coach to come into.

Who cares!?

The Falcons have always sucked, and will always suck.

It’s an Atlanta tradition.

The only difference is that the locals in the city “too busy to hate(unless you’re white)” can now choose to blame it on the coaching and not the quarterback/thug/gangsta/fingathrowa.

Although the fault belongs to both.

Why not let that damn quarterback coach the team? He likes to do what he wants anyway, and no one in this city will fault him because he’s black and he can run. So go hire him, Arthur. Maybe he’ll get Shaub traded and bring his little brother here to create Ray Lewis-type chaos in Buckhead. Let me finish packing my bags…thanks to the coach killer.

Actually the slogan of “City too busy to hate” was branded such in an attempt to change the perception about white folk not only in Atlanta but Georgia as a whole; and to make all feel as if they have a legitimate opportunity at success in this city. Everyone knows the bigoted history of Georgia.

Thanks for doing all that you can to undermine the premise behind that slogan.

everyone knows Vick runs the team, it will take someone that Vick will like and not upset him. He is too short to be a passing qb that is why he runs. When he gets to where he can no longer run what then? blank will have to get vicks ok on the next coach. someone who will push his wheelchair so blank wont have to. Schaub is a good qb and should go to a team that will let him start.

This thread is POINTLESS!!!!!! Cowher is leaving to spend time with family in NORTH CAROLINA since his wife moved there over a year ago.

I hope Blank doesn’t pursue Cowher. Cowher has far too much class for Blank, Vick, and the Falcons (W. Dunn and certain others excluded). I like Cowher way too much to want him to step into this steaming pile of intrigue. I mean look at what happened last season. Falcons open as a run-oriented team and kick tail. Then vick whines about his talents as a passer (I musta missed something) not being utilized and all of sudden Kanpp is calling “x” number passes per game regardless to appease whomever (r ya listenin Artie?) and the season tanks. If we keep Vick as QB, the heck with his pansy@ssed whining and just jam the ball down the other team’s throat. Funny how when we were running the ball the line, both offensive and defensive, didn’t have nearly as much problems as trying to pass block. Would be nice to have both, but stick with what works. I feel sorry for whoever gets saddled with the Falcons as long Vick holds such sway. Coach killer is an apt moniker indeed. Then again if he pulled his little act with Cowher, Cowher would probably punch his lights out so maybe there is an upside…. I for one would be greatly amused if everyone the Falcons interviewed turned Blank down, with having to @ss kiss Vick being reason #1. As long as we have a one-dimensional QB, maybe cousin herbert is the best we should shoot for

I can assure you Bird fans that Cowher is not coming to Atlanta. Just as an outside observer, Vick seems to be more of the problem, not the solution.

I think the Falcons will lose out to the Dolphins, Steelers, and Cardinals and have to settle on the four best option available. It’s just not an attractive situation for an incoming coach. He’d be expected to win within two years, and your organization just isn’t a position to do that right now. I would question the McKay hiring; he’s done you guys few favors since arriving.

Anyway, good luck. We Pats’ fans have enjoyed our last two regular season visits to the dome! (Pre-season doesn’t count boys)

First of all they fired Jim Mora because they could, Home depot and all thats what they thought of Jim’s position. I don’t think it was all his fault. It was allot of bad play calling that was our undoing. They should of waited a week or more before firing Mora anyways. It looked kind of rash and retaliatory by doing it when they did. And they had no one in the lineup to replace him. They should of said they were going to replace Mora at the end of the season if they didn’t produce. Thats just bad management all the way at the top why don’t they fire the ones that fired Mora for bad management of the team. Mora just the fall guy for allot of bad decisions from the Falcons organization. As far as getting Bill Cower… they should open a dialogue with him and get his real fealings on retireing. He may realy want to just get away from it all. Nothing wrong in pursuing a good candidate.I’m not so sure though Cower is the man there are many adjustments that need to be made to the Falcon organization. Vick needs to stay in the pocke and not be so afraid to take a hit for the team be more patient in the pocket and that would make a huge improvement on the passing game.

And, people seem to forget Chandler made the playoffs both years with Dallass. The solution to all our problems was under our noses all along. Oh thank God that’s solved. It’s got to be Gailey. I say why not just put the word out there that the Falocns are interested in talking with him before he disappears for a couple of years. Why not lay a good foundation for when he returns to coaching. Evry coach lies about why they are leaving or why the decided to come back..ie SABAN. Cowher is a good coach who would be good for Vick, remember cordell stewart..and they have the kid from GA to take vicks spot in about 3 years if he is still around. WHy not talk with the man, we seem to want to let everyone go ahead of us and recruit better than us. WHy would we go after an unproven Offensive COordinator as head coach. If not Cowher, Dan reeves, if not reeves, hell Denny Green. Hell even art shell had a winning record before he came back to an impossible situation. We need some one with winning experience and not just. Only a few offensive or defensive coordinators can come in a do well in their first couple of years. we need a coach we can keep around for another 10 years, thats the only way we are going to have a good team year in/out.

Bill Cowher take your needed break. Now onto the beloved Falcons. I think that the problem with the Falcons is a real bad offensive line, badly coached receivers, and two below average coordinators. No disrespect to Arthur Blank, but when he hired Jim Mora from the San Fransico 49ers, did he not know that the 49ers were consistent losers. The target coaches for the Falcons should be as follows: a) Ken Whisenhunt b) Jim Caldwell c) Cam Newton d) Ron Rivera e) Bobby Petrino f) Pete Carroll

Then maybe then they will hire Mike Singletary as defensive coordinator.

Go Falcons!

It doesn’t matter who coaches the Falcons, Vick is the problem. I used to be a Vick fan, and yes, he is a phenemonal talent. He is not consistently accurate. I know the receiving problem isn’t totally his fault but I’ve seen games where the balls are thrown nowhere near the receiver and he standing there, griping about somebody not catching the ball. Athletic ability doesn’t always equate to wins. I think if receivers are able to catch balls from Shaub, put him in. Nobody seems to be responding to Vick anymore and I don’t think he is all that loyal to his teammates either. In football, you ride or die with your coaches and teammates. Vick seems to sell them out in a real subtle way. I wouldn’t want to be his teammate.

Its going to be interesting to see who becomes the head coach of the Falcons. And if Vick is not happy with you as a coach, he does what any 5 year old child will do, he will run and tell Daddy (Blank)on you. The Falcons don’t need another’s players coach, they need a coach who will demand respect and hold players accountable.

I like the approach that the Falcons are taking in their coach search. Interview the brightest young coordinators out there. I feel that all of the guys that the Falcons have lined up for interviews are intelligent, football saavy coaches that will someday be a head coach in the NFL. Cameron and Whisenhunt have engineered successful offenses in the NFL. Rivera’s Bear defense is a beast and Singletary immediately put life back into what was a listless 49er defense. All of these guys come from programs with winning traditions and can only help the Falcons in their Super Bowl quest. Let Cowher rest. That is his only interest at this time.

By Gary Wright

January 5, 2007 03:30 PM | Link to this

Two notes from Kevin’s post.

1/ Vick is the 6th most sacked player in the NFL this year. He’s taken quite a bit of pounding. I’ll never forget the Dallas and the Carolina games, where he seemed to be the only one who showed up to play. (I can’t think about CLE and DET; just too ugly.)

2/ While it is less classy to fire Mora on a Holiday, I have to believe that Blank/Mackay were thinking strategically that they had to get out of the chute quickly to be able to schedule the interviews they wanted with Rivera and Cameron before the playoff ban that starts this Sunday. I can’t fault them for doing their best to make sure they have a full pool of candidates.

I’d like to ask other posters why they keep suggesting Mike Singletary as a DC, not as head coach. No offense to Whiz, but … there is no one else on the current list with the bonifides of being a HOF kicka$$ player who has coached successfully in two settings. He’s an author and paid motivational speaker. He doesn’t have to coach, so this is clearly what he is driven to do.

I figure it would be nice for Cowher to come down to Atlanta, be it for the Falcons or Tech (if Gailey leaves for the Dolphins). Should Gailey leave, Cowher would make a nice addition to Tech. Think that Cowher is too smart and too much of a winner to come to Atlanta. Who in their right mind is going to come to a team that is totally dominated by a quarterback who cannot lead; cannot win; but has the owner thinking that he is the ‘second coming’? Mr. Blank is no doubt a nice guy, but he apparently failed to learn one thing at Home Depot — FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT! After the next coach is hired, we will have had three coaches since Mr. Vick appeared on the scene! Vick should have been benched after his vulgar episode in early December, but wasn’t — so, what kind of a signal will that send to a disciplinarian?? No, Cowher would not give Atlanta a second thought!

K Virden…I agree completely…if hindsight is 20/20 wasn’t Dan Reeves the kinda coach we really needed and still do…someone who doesn’t take bullshi_ from his players or the owner…a coach who’s a coach not a cheerleader or your best buddy…I just don’t see how any good coach would want to come to Atlanta knowing what a mess he’s stepping into with the QB,GM and Owner problems that exist here

Cowher would bench Ron Mexico’s a$$ in a New York minute. He would also tell Blankhead to take a hike if he showed up on the sideline. But why would anyone leave the Steelers to come babysit these overpaid chumps? It ain’t gonna happen unless Blankhead WAY overpays - like he is known to do.

All of you who want Dan Reeves back give it a rest! He had a heart attack 7-8 years ago! We need someone who will be able to be coaching hopefully 10 years from now.Calling for Dan Reeves to comeout of retirement at his age and in his health is preposterous.Let him enjoy the rest of his time remaining on this earth without having to suffer all the long grueling hours and the pressure that head coaches have to go through. Anyone who thinks that cowher is leaving the steelers to “spend more time with his family” is brain dead. Two of cowhers three daughters are upper classwomen at princeton university. The other daughter is a year away from going off to college. Does that sound like a man who needs to leave his post to spend more time with his family? The last thing his three college age daughters want to do is spend time with daddy.

The real reason Cowher is leaving the steelers is because he knows he can command top dollar from other teams, while the steelers won’t even pay him close to what the other top paid coaches are making. For instance, mike holmgren made 8 million dollars this past season while cowher made only half that at 4 million. Do you think cowher is worth only half of what mike holmgren is worth? I didn’t think so and neither does he. He probably will sit out a year because of his loyalty to his players and the steeler organization. But if I’m arthur blank I would take a shot and offer cowher top dollar just to see what he would do. Folks, cowher is still only 49 years old and at the absolute top of his profession. I say throw the cash at him arthur, what could it hurt. And please don’t give me some lame excuse about losing a draft pick. Our last two #1 picks are shoddy white and michael jenkins. Would you rather have had cowher as coach or one of these two players? Besides, we probably could work out a deal that would only cost us a second rounder. GO AFTER COWHER NOW!

By mo

January 5, 2007 04:13 PM | Link to this

I think that if you throw enough money at Bill Cowher, he’ll spend all his time with his family… at Flowery Branch.

I absolutely do not believe that he is doing this out of family obligation. If that was the case, he would have RETIRED!

Cowher’s looking for a paycheck. And if I was Blank, I’ll pay him $1 more than Mike Holmgren, and watch the Chin roam around the Atlanta sideline, chatting it up with Vick.

As for the Falcons, I think we have the players to make a great run. I think the #1 problem with this team was coaching. Most people agreed with that statement in the beginning of the season, and it is the truth. The one thing about our players, though, is the lack of depth. Mora actually said that it was a concern of his during preseason. And it should be addressed.

But as far as individual players, we are pretty good. Vick actually had a statistically good season. When Vick didn’t have a good statistically season, however, we won more. I bet Vick is just kicking himself for even joining the Falcons. Can’t win… even if he wins.

But Cowher would be exactly what’s needed in this franchise: a proven winner with the ability to pull out potential in his players.

Heck no!! Let Cowher chill for a couple of years and then he’ll be ready to hit the scene hungry. After 15 years and finally making it, you want to savor the moment and collect if you want to do another 5, 10, 15 years. Dont do what the Knicks did with Coach Brown, he had a pitfall after he won the championship and the second one lost by 5 seconds, theres a level of fullfillment. Its like reaching a pennacle, you take a deep breath, exhale and savor it. After a couple of years you set you next goals and pursue them. This is what Cowher is going to do. -in my opinion.

Mo, are you really that goofy to think Bill Cowher is quitting the Steelers to go and seek a huge payday somewhere. You cant be that ignorant. He’s a family man, who wants to spend some time watching his daughters play hoops and enjoy a well deserved break. After a couple of years I’m sure he’ll coach again. At that point when the Falcons have had another mediocre season and all you bird fans are crying for another new coach, then you can throw some money at him. Until then, give the guy a break. And please dont compare him to these greedy players who are chasing paychecks, give him a little more credit than that. Long Time Falcon, you need to spend a long time doing research. Cowher’s WIFE MOVED OUT OF THE HOUSE TO NORTH CAROLINA BECAUSE SHE WAS TIRED OF BEING A FOOTBALL WIDOW. Cowher is on hiatus — plain and simple. If he wanted money, why in the heck would he turn down a fat paycheck this year? He can leave Pittsburgh after next year, collect his multimillions this year from Rooney, and then get even more the following year. Instead he is unemployed this year with no income. Not exactly the strategy to use if you are seeking the most money. The ONLY reason he left was to be with his family. It kind of helps a marraige survive if you actually live in the same city as your wife.

Vick thinks his you-know-what don’t stink, it makes me ill. Wonder if he knows those 2 gals in Sugarloaf Country Club?! We have some, I say SOME talent but this team is a mess. I can’t blame Kearney a bit for waiting to see what happens before he reups, I hope we keep him, though. We need another fatty to spell our current fatty when he’s fatigued…The other staff catered entirely too much to the players, Cowher wouldn’t put up with that for 1 second, or an owner patrolling the sideline, either! I didn’t say cohwer was a whore chasing a paycheck. But If you are regarded as one of the best at what you do then you want to be compensated accordingly. It is a matter of pride that you don’t want to be paid half of what the guy you just defeated in the super bowl makes. Everyone should remember that cowher’s agent was in contract talks with the steelrs org. before the season started. Those talks broke down because cowhers agent wanted him to be the highest paid coach and the steelers refused to pay that amount to cowher or any coach. That is a g******* fact! Cowher may very well sit out a year but I will gaurantee you he will be roaming someones sideline next season as one of the top paid coaches. And all of you nieve morons can keep believing that he left to spend more time with family. By leaving the way he is leaving helps him to save face within the league. But it is no secrect that he desires to be paid what he thinks he is worth. That is human nature people, not a knock against cowher. Read between the lines on some of the comments he has made this week. When asked if he was burned out from coaching? He smiled and said ” do I look like I’m burned out”. It is a matter of respect to him to be among the top paid coaches in the league.

The Falcons would be wasting their time trying to go after a coach who just left a better organiaztion. Cowher (understandably) needs a break. If he wanted to coach, he would have stayed in Pittsburgh. At this point, it looks like the Falcons’ best bets are either Whisenhunt or Rivera. There are no proven former head coaches to go after. I’m glad the Falcons aren’t, at least at this point, pursuing college coaches. usually a mistake.

Such a lot of inaccurate information spewed by obviously ignorant people. Cowher did not “retire.” He “resigned.” His third daughter still has 2 1/2 years left of high school. This daughter and his wife, Kaye, moved into the new mansion in Raleigh around the late spring of 2006. For the Falcons to get Cowher in 2007, blank would have pay $8 million + multiple draft choices. Tapma Bay had to pay Oakland millions + two 1st round & two. 2nd round draft coices for Gruden.

What is likely for Cowher is that he sits out 2007 and then takes the Redskins job in 2008. Gibbs is old + D.C. is close to Raleigh.

You Falcon fans need to forget Cowher and move on.

By Pigskinmutt

Cowher is the product of a good franchise that keeps continuity and has beleived in a defense first and then improve offense. Blank has put all his marbles on Vick in both marketing and culture and is making money. He will hire a coach who likes to coach by committee put a decent team on the field and keep the stadium full. But Super Bowl? Not without a dominant defense and with Vick geting the lions share of the payroll it won’t happen. And I don’t understand the critisism on McKay. He recommended Lovie and I don’t think we would be on this thread if he would have been hired.

This article was obviously written because you had nothing else to write about. Cowher is NOT coaching anywhere next year. So why pursue him? Even IF he wanted to coach, and ATL pursued him, we would have to give up draft picks to bring him in, and pay a lot of money. Why? Sure, very good coach, but come on. And would people please stop mentioning Dan Reeves. He’s not coming back, thank goodness. I like who ATL is currently interviewing. No, these coaches do not have head coaching experience, but experience in the NFL they have plenty. I would really like to see Ron Rivera coaching the birds next year, but that’s just me. Wouldn’t mind Cam or Ken either, but prefer Rivera. I really think he could do a lot of good here.

Bill would be the exact type of coach the Falcons need. Tough, likes to run the ball, has a very good defensive scheme (which I believe to be one of the things the Falcons lacked last year).

But he wants to be with his family and he probably instilled some of his values in Ken. If the Steelers go a different route. Wisenhunt should be a good fit in ATL.

By Gram

What bothers me in the Falcons’ search for a coach is that their #1 priority is to hire a coach who can build an offense around Vick’s skills. What a mistake! You hire a coach for his decision-making, game-planning, ability to form a staff, and teaching ability but not to mold his offense around one person, no matter who that is. The Falocns are too married to Vick to see clearly.

However, a SB winning coach, that has also taken his team to 5 conference championship games, he!! yes you try to get him to coach your team. As for the continued talk about Vick, give it a rest. Isn’t thisd a moot point. Cower didn’t quit to take another job; he had a great job. He sure as hell wouldn’t trade the Steelers job for the Falcons job. This isn’t even a legitimate question.

The new Falcon coach will have to work through a couple of major issues to survive here. One, he has no choice but to work with Mike Vick. He will have no say in trading him. Two, he will have Arthur on the sidelines, and at the Monday morning coaches meeting. With 25 years in corporate America, I can tell you having your manager trail you around is nothing more than second guessing your decisions. That is annoying and counter-productive and will drive away some coaches. Mora put up with it and where is Mora today?

By DamnTheMan…..Face it, between Coach-killer Vicky’s “sick” and sad passing skills and Blank’s man-love for him, the Falcons will be the bottom of the barrel coaching job, right next to the Raiders.

Abandon all hope of getting a quality head coach in Atlanta. At least as long as Vicky is here.

Frankly my Dear,

I dont give a darn who the Falcons get to coach and I don’t even care who our QB is. I just want a team that competes hard every game, a team that has a balanced offense, and a defense that can actually stop a team from running when that team doesn’t even have a QB in the game. I want a team that can actually make it into the playoffs and one that gives us a shot to go to and possibly win the Super Bowl. I guess while I am at it, I want Vida Guerra to be committed to me only, and I want my boss to actually get a clue.

Well maybe the Vida idea might work out!!!

So, how much you think we’d have to pay Jimmy Johnson? Bet we could save a bundle too ‘cause we could get rid of McKay and let him run the whole show. We all know that Jimmy don’t mind having the owner on the sidelines with him either. Sounds like a plan to me.

OK, NOW HOPEFULLY I CAN POST MY TOPIC ON THIS STORY WITHOUT READING ABOUT THE FALCONS QUARTERBACK!!

MY THOUGHT IS LIKE MOST OF THE INTELLIGENT POST ARE STATING THAT IT WOULD COST US TOO MUCH MONEY & DRAFT PICKS TO CALL ON BILL C. THIS SHOULD ALLOW US TO SEEK ONE OF THE TOP AVAILABLE ASST. COACHES..MY CHOICE IS KEN W. FOR HEAD COACH AND HOPEFULLY HE CAN GET CAM C. OR MIKE S. TO RUN THE DEFENSE.

Going after Cowher sounds great but it can’t happen for a couple of reasons:

  • He is under contract and if he were to come to Vick/Blank Experience it would require a trade and the Experience would have to give up to three high draft choices over the next two drafts.

  • He is Bill Cowher not Nick Saban of Jim Mora, when he gets in front of a mic and says something I believe he means it.

  • It’s the Vick/Blank experience

  • Mike Singletary, Ron Rivera, Cam Cameron and Ken Whisenhut are all reported to be great candidates all smart, mature, accomplished guys that will be solid Head Coaches this year or sometime in the near future. Art Shell should not even be part of the conversation. With all of Blanks Cap Money, love and commitment going to Mr/Coach/ GM/Partner Vick you can count on him passing on Singletary and Rivera in favor of a offensive guy with the promise of jump starting Vick’s stalled career.

Im sure that Whisenhut and Camron will opt for better options in Arizona, Pittsburgh or New York where they have much better offensive talent leaving the Vick/Blank Experience with a second rate offensive guy or some retread. So Blank’s misguided plan to make Mikey a NFL QB will probably cost us Singletary or Rivera. I hope Im wrong but the prospect of Blank thinking with his big head when his beloved little Mikey is involved is rather remote.

So there is one man for this job, one man with valuable experience and endless patience with undersized, slow thinking, inaccurate passing, chicken with their head cut off quarterbacks. A man with NFL head coaching experience, that is a master of making excuses for his quarterbacks poor play and inability to read defenses, Ladies and Gentleman I give you Chan Gailey the obvious choice for the next head coach of your Vick/Blank Experience.

just let arthur blank be the coach. he seems to want to get involved in everything and be on the sidelines as it is, so why doesn’t he just put on the headsets and start calling plays already? he is already pretending to be the gm with all of his boneheaded signings, resignings, trades, reeves firings, mora hirings, mckay hirings, and drafts? i think the guy is a great owner in that he is like the rest of us and he wants to win real bad. but unfortunately, he is like the rest of us and is just a fan. as much as we all love football, we would not have the first clue if we were told to start coaching, drafting, signing, trading, and resigning. neither does arthur. so he needs to just step aside, hire the right gm and hire a good coach and trust them to do what he wants them to do.

if you can get cowher, then get him even if it cost you ten million dollars a year to sign him. with cowher as your coach, he has proven that you do not have to spend (and with king arthur, more correctly stated, overspend) for free agents and your own stars and he will still win on a consistent basis. so it may seem like a waste to pay him $10 million per year but it will not be. my attitude is that with cowher as a coach, even if you overpay him by $4 milliion, you will save yourselves probably another $10 million in player salaries because cowher does not need overpriced players to succeed and you will more than make up the overpaying of cowher by having a consistent winning product on the field which wins on a consistent basis which in turns keeps the revenue stream pumping. paying cowher too much will not kill the salary cap. overpaying a player most definitely will. also, if the vick thing does not work out for whatever reason or reasons, then the organization still has a face of an organization that the fans will rally around no matter who the players are. (arthur, can you let your ego be suppressed enough to let someone besides mv7 be bigger than you in the organization?)

the reality is that the falcons really need to make a big splash with a cowher or a jimmy johnson. the fans have lost faith. just look at mv7. whereas all falcons fans once had blind faith in mv7, that faith has gone away for alot of fans who are broken hearted over what they feel is the broken promises of mv7 and what we all thought we could be with mv7. i still believe in mv7 but my faith is growing weaker every passing day.

next year, the seats at the dome are not going to sell out as fast, and the fervor and rabid fan base will no longer be there as much. thus, blank needs to make a big splash with a cowher or jimmy johnson who make the fans true believers practicing blind faith in the organization.

if they hire a no name or another assistant that the fans hope will turn out decent by who they have no guarantees about, this town will quickly forget about the falcons just as quickly as they realized the falcons were playing here in 2002 when vick started running around out there. that will mean no new stadium and arthur having alot of egg on his face.

arthur, sometimes you have to let someone else be a bigger name and face than yourself in order to make your face and name the biggest in the history of pro football in atlanta

I’ve been reading this blog all season and then some, and I can truly say that Falcon are the stupidest and least loyal fans in the world. This is a team that averages about 6-10 per year and they expect a Super Bowl Contender. The fans want to run the franchise’s winningest QB EVER out of town and replace him with a QB who has a career completion percentage of less than 50% and has a record of 0-4. Talk about stupid. Here’s a news flash. The Falcons weren’t going to win a Super Bowl Anyways!!! Enjoy being competitive for a few years. It won’t last. I still root for the team. Most of you rednecks don’t. The majority of the fans in Atlanta are awful!, the thing that really pi*ses me off is the dome being half full at kick off times, I mean come on!, is that what you call support?, if you are so bothered about Mora or Vick or even Cowher on this team then at least show your support!, I must admit I’d not feel as fired up as I should if I was a player and the dome was empty for a must win game (ie v Carolina)…If I can make 3-4 trips each year from England to watch the Falcons then I am sure you can make the effort if living in Georgia!, and before you rant about Atlanta traffic, save it!…I lived in Smyrna (Cobb County) for 3 years and never had any problems getting to the dome on time, driving or on marta!…

This franchise needs support! and this team has what it takes to go all the way!!…GO FALCONS!!

Well, who cares…Blank wants a full dome and Vick juking around helps fill it (never mind that he can’t throw a 20 yard accurate pass when needed)…all the to the cheers of the 19 year olds.

I do not want Cowher here! before the game this year, maybe, but after that BS timeout at the end of the game, NO WAY! football is about tough, straight-up competition, strength and strategy, but what he did to try an unfairly win was cowardly and underhanded. a cheat and a wimp, our next coach should have integrity and be tougher than that. there should be a new rules in the NFL concerning the attempts to ‘ice’ a kicker. the timeouts rarely seem to make a difference, they waste everyone’s time and are just plain dirty pool, especially when they are called in the way Cowher called his, shameful.

SNAKE BITTEN for sure. Yes, the Falcons should aquire a coach in the same mold as Cowher. But Cowher is out of the question. Next he will be avaolable, but the Falcons will already have a new coach in place. Cowher is a no go. I still have faith that McKay and Blank will get the best available to lead the Falcons in the right direction. But the only coach that I am aware of that is built similar, maybe more equipped than Cowher,is available and has already lead us to the Super Bowl…Dan Reeves. A phone call to him may not be a bad idea…

SNAKE BITTEN for sure. A shame that the Falcons will miss the opportunity to aquire Cowher. He will be recharged for next season, but the Falcons will already have a head coach in place for the club. So Cowher is not even an option. I still have faith that McKay and Blank will aquire the best available coach to lead the team in the right direction. There is a coach available, even more equipped than Cowher and has already lead this franchise to a Super Bowl. If we are looking to win later with a young coach, there are several options. If we are looking to win now, call give Dan Reeves a call.

Bad idea! Hiring Cowher or another active head coach under contract would involve giving up first round draft choices. No matter how good the coach is he needs 1st class players to suceed. Remember, all successful head coaches were assistants at one time. Who knows, maybe there is another Sean Payton out there just waiting on his chance to be the next Don Shula or Vince Lombardi.

Absolutely, we should attempt to lure him in. Yes, he retired from the Steelers but he also said he isn’t tired of coaching and still has the fire. Just because he said he wants to spend more time with his family, in no way should one believe that is his only consideration. Working closer to home still allows for that while letting him perform his other passion, as coach in the NFL. If we don’t try and hire him someone else will. He is my favorite current NFL coach. To have him coaching my favorite NFL team would be pretty awesome for me.

Thanks AJC for absoulutely nothing I am from Georgia and serve in the US Army. It is painfully obvious that there is racial tension in the city of Atlanta which I read everyday played out on your blogs. First off Michael Vick is not perfect maybe not even a great Quaterback but he has taken this franchise to two playoff appearances and an NFC Championship, sports radio stations actually talk about the Falcons there is some interest around the country in this team that did not happen until Micheal Vick got here. To the guy that seems to have a problem with the falcons season ticket holders being black just say I am a racist and be done with it. I highly advise any black free agent in any sport or high school kid thinking about going to college here. Stay away from Atlanta. Life is about karma and their is a reason that this city is Loserville, USA. And once again Thanks AJC for your complete lack of responsibilty in this matter, you are doing your community a huge disservice.

If the Giants fire Coughlin the Falcons should go after him. Some one that wouldn’t be afraid to force some order on the team—including Sir Vick.

Dan Reeves had a losing season in Atlanta his entire tenure except for the one season he got to the Super Bowl and as usual lost by double digits.

He never had a winning season to my knowledge in New York. Yes he got to three Super Bowls because of John Elway and then thanks to his brilliant game plans lost each one. The last of which he lost 55-10.

If you think Reeves will take you and Vick to a Super Bowl victory you are crazy. If Atlanta had a John Elway maybe Reeves could get you into the game, but don’t expect him to ever win it. And Vick is no John Elway.

Cowher is a no brainer if he would consider an offer. However, by all accounts, he is done for at least a year of not two.

The more I read and hear about Singletary, the better he sounds. Hard nosed and defensive-minded are traits the Falcons sorely need.

Chris Mortensen reported on ESPN this morning that prospective coaches are being told that “they are not married to Vick”. At the risk of not getting constructive responses, I wonder how you as fans feel about it. Let’s dispense with disparaging Mortensen as he is a well-respected industry insider. I simply would like to know how you feel about it without the seemingly requisite B$ that gets slung on these blogs.

If I was a Falcon fan I wouldn’t care what color the QB was—I’d care he could do the job as QB. Tom Jackson of ESPN who is black makes the same complaints about Vick as many people here. I guess he is a self-hating black then for saying Vick is not a NFL QB. Vick is only part of the problem facing the Falcons, but he is a problem.

Jake Plummer got his team to the AFC championship last year and where did he end the season? On the bench. If Vick had played for most teams in the NFL, that is where he’d be too. But Atlanta rewards failure.

What on earth does this have to do with hiring an HC or pro football?????

I doubt if Cowher is interested in coaching any football this year. He’s wealthy so I don’t believe that money is the issue. Success in Pittsburgh does not guarantee success in Atlanta nor mater who the QB is. In my opinion, the focus should remain on the available candidates who have been interviewed or waiting to be interviewed. Atlanta may not be the “melting pot” of the word, but it is not the pits of racist hell as some on these blogs wold have you believe. People of all ethnic backgrounds from all over the world, laugh, love, socialize, work, raise families, go to church and just live life in this city.
