Saban says… Roll Tide!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
OK, Bama fans - and we know y’all are out there - let’s hear what you think of Nick Saban’s move from Miami to Tuscaloosa. Are the glory days here again for the Crimson Tide with the arrival of St. Nick? How long will it take to rebuild the Tide? Is it too late to get blue-chip recruits? Be honest: When will the honeymoon end for Saban with fans and boosters? And Dogs fans, is the time right for a real Bama-UGA rivalry?

Alabama is a cesspool of a state with SERIOUSLY mixed-up priorities.
Those poor citizens have nothing to live for other than the past and “Bear” Bryant and that baker’s dozen (or so) championships.
To have to work AND live in Alabama, Saban isn’t getting paid NEARLY ENOUGH.
Nick Saban, like a beautiful, young woman who marries a hideous, fat, abusive, old man (who likes doing “IT” all the time) just for his money, is going to EARN every red (or crimson) cent of that money.

I don’t understand his thought process. If he was going to be a college coach, LSU is a better job than Alabama.
If it was all about money, from what I understand, he’s going to take a paycut from the $4.5 million he was making in Miami.

This is BIG TIME news in the SEC…Saban won it all @ LSU; With the talent available in Alabama he’ll make huge runs at it all @ Bama. Remember Bama went 10-2 with coachs like Curry and Shula….Last time Bama had a real coach (Stallings) they won it all…I think we are going to start hearing Roll Tide in the ATL in future.

It’s a great choice until the next big money offer comes along. Saban has proven to be a quick fix coach in college, but he also is always looking for the next opportunity. His stay at Bama will not change this. My prediction he stays for 4 years, wins a SECC, and then goes to Notre Dame after Weis is lured back to the NFL.

It’s pretty sad when a state-run university in one of the most impoverished and poorly-educated states in the country spends $35 million on a football coach. Nice to see their priorities are in order.
The Bear Bryant era is long over. Alabama is just another team in an ovverrated (see Tenn and Ark losses to big 10 teams) conference. Saban will have his 9-4 seasons, but there will be no dynasty. Get in touch with reality, Tide nation.

But I’ll also ad, that if the schools don’t start policing themselves in the salary department, some State Govts will and the fans probably won’t like it.

Nick Saban will take the best football program in the country back to where it was: the top. With the upcoming schedule this year that includes visits from Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, and of course trips to Auburn and to Jaxsonville for the FSU game, Nick will get to prove his mettle soon enough.

If it’s true then Alabama just grabbed a top 5 coach. Based on his track record I’d put him right in line with Carroll, Tressel, Meyer or any of them. And the best part is that everywhere he’s been he does it with tough, hard-nosed defense. He is a master recruiter and tactician who will bring Bama back from the doldrums. I have to admit that I never dreamed we’d get a coach of this caliber after all the problems. Great job Mal!!

How long will it take? Winning record next season. SEC title game in three years. BCS national championship game in five years.
How long will it last? Until someone offers Nick Saban more money or something better comes along. Saban’s a mercinery. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Is this a “good” choice or a “bad” choice? It depends entirely on how you look at it.
*It’s a GOOD choice for: * Nick Saban, Nick Saban’s family and University of Alabama football fans.
*It’s a BAD choice for: * Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, Georgia and Florida.
The Bottom Line is this:
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Alabama won’t be a push over any more….

As an LSU fan, welcome back Nick. No surprise you took the money - we all expected that. The difference between 7 years ago & now is that he will not be able to build a fence around Alabama like he did in Louisiana for the kids. Also, can you see the other coaches asking parents about the possibility of him being their when their son gets to be a senior? Finally, what does this say about the hypocrites on the U of A Board: they did not give Jimbo Fisher the job at UAB because of “financial integerity”, & yet they give Saban $35M! Speaking for one who wishes Nick good luck, I have to say that whatever respect I had for the Tide & Da Bear for what they did for SEC Football is now gone, not because of Saban, but because of the hypocrites who make up the good ole boy Board. By the way, I like our chances with The Hat vs. St Nick!

Bama is getting a coach who has no personal credibility anymore. Just before Christmas, he categorically denied that he would be coaching in Tuscaloosa in 2007. He said he had a job to finish in Miami, to make the Dolphins competitive again (after Dave Wannstedt ruined the team). For a man who considers himself to be a Christian, I would suppose that lying is just a part of Saban’s faith.

Can he walk on water, too?
At LSU: Which school does LSU compete against for getting the top talent in Louisiana? Is it Tulane? It could be UL-Monroe! SO, SABAN had his pick for the top playmakers.
At Bama: He’ll have to compete for the top talent with Auburn. Good Luck. He’ll get his share but its NOT the same ALABAMA that Diddy and Granddiddy attended!

As a dolphin fan I am actually happy Saban has left. He was dishonest with the fans of Miami. Huzingua gave him everything he wanted and could not hack it in the NFL. He’s a Pete Carroll. He won a NC with LSU that was shared and coached an LSU team that is regarded as the weakest NC team that won a title in a while. He passed on Cadillac Williams and chooses Ronnie Brown. Gave up on Drew Breese and Jeff Garcia both taking their teams to the playoffs and selected to go with a guy who had a catastrophic knee injury and gave up two draft picks in the end. Nick, you are small time, HAVE A BLAST IN TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA it will suit you and your family better…. Good riddance! Oh and next time you sit in the house of a college recruit and give him your commitment I hope he doesn’t take a look at your track record.

Ben, good point, but one key thing is missing: the LSU job is not available anymore. It is hands down a better job because of the lack of instate competition and much more talent at the HS level. Basically, he made a mistake when he left, he wants to get back into college, he’s making way more $ than when he left, but he had to take an inferior job to do it. Yes, Alabama will be much improved with him, but tradition only carries so far, and outside of that they are baically one of the MS schools. Saban will not consistently win at that place.

I’ll have to admit I’m surprised —in a way. Then again, he’s shown before that he’ll pack-up & leave just about anywhere anytime. With that being said, I think ALA will improve, win more games & be more consistant. It’ll be interesting to see Saban travel to LSU in ‘08, though. And although he could bolt at ‘BAMA, too, with his age (54 I think) & him being one of, if not THE highest paid coach, maybe he’ll stick around. The only down side to hiring Saban is NO Coach has EVER WON two (2) National Championships at different schools. Could Saban be the 1st?? We’ll see.

Probobably good for Saban and Alabama. But, shame on Bama for ratcheting up coaches salaries. Alabama is not exactly the weathiest state. If Saban’s has financial impact on some student trying to make a better life for him/herself, then that sucks. Saban better perform for that money. He probably will. But, where is he going to spend that kind of money in T-town? Ya can’t blame Saban. Now they should can Mal Moore. Yeah, Saban won’t last there. There are few dynasties anymore. There are only 2 left: PSU and FSU. Its not about tradition, anymore. Its about market forces. Just look at the names of the Bowl games: ‘Your #@%$ing business name here’ Bowl.

All of these Bama fans are forgetting a couple of things:
1) There isn’t a whole lot of instate talent, and AUBarn is there to take some too.
2) Tuscaloosa isn’t a dream destination for anyone not handicapped. I’ve been there, it’s not terrible(just close) but no one who didn’t grow up loving the school is going to want to spend four years there. It’s basically Starkville east.
Tradition isn’t worth anything anymore, as Nebraska has shown. Saban is good, but he’s not a miracle worker. He won at LSU with much better athletes than he’ll ever have at Bama. I do think he’s good enough to reclaim the state, but any of you thinking he’ll bring home more than one SEC a decade started drinking too early today. Also, if a great oportunity arose(no, Alabama is not one) he’s as good as gone. He’d have better luck returning to Mich St, at least there’s a lot of talent in that state. Bottom line, Bama fans, enjoy the “success” but it won’t be what you think and if he can’t do it, it will never be what you think it should.

As an Alabama graduate, I would say that I am happy we have a coach, but would have preferred someone else. I do believe, however, that Saban will win consistently at Alabama. He will probably stay more than 5 years as well due to the money, the facilities, and to erase his track record of being a coaching gypsy.
Tuscaloosa is not a bad place to coach. One Hundred Million dollars have been spent to upgrade the facilities to be some of the nicest in the NCAA. The stadium is fantastic and holds 93,000 fans. Mercedes has brought more money and development to the area and North River Yacht Club (where Saban will most likely live) is beautiful. Golf is huge in the state with Alabama Retirement Systems building the Robert Trent Jones Trail and Ross Bridge developments. Alabama’s campus was designed to be very similar to UVA and is classically Southern and full of rich history. Saban will not be disappointed living in Alabama and he will be the center of attention in the State. It seems he likes the attention anyway….
Positively speaking, he immediately puts Tuberville in the backseat of football interest in the State of Alabama.

Wouldn’t Saban have been better off if Rodriguez took the Bama job? He could then coach WVU, which I believe is his alma mater or at least he grew up there. All I can say to all you envious Dawg fans is go to hell. You are headed back to #3 in the SEC East now that Tennessee and Florida are back on track. They will compete for the East the next ten years while LSU AU and BAMA will compete for the west.
The tide has a roster full of great players right now, Saban will be able to recruit better than he did at LSU, and the facilites and campus are among the best in the country. All of that equals a 13th National Championship in the near future for the TIDE !!

Im not even worried about the SEC we have thrown the gauntlet down to the Butteyes, the drunken Irish and the donghorns that we are coming.
Meanwhile SEC second tier: hope you enjoyed the recent years because its all over now. Tuberville better accept the Falcons job now because its his best option now.
As for Saban leaving in 2 years? Who cares? Its a different atmosphere now. We will use him like he will use us.

Nick Saban is to college football coaching as TO is to pro football. Attention craving, ego starved, money hungry talent with no conscious and little social awareness. Personal instability = occupational instability. The best thing about his zip code change is the additional ‘L’ added to the Auburn record to balance the 3 ‘Ws’ they get with their annual Div I AA teams they pad their schedule with. The war chickens are on official high alert and are running back to the hen house. The hawk, N Saban, is circling the yard. Ready to dive….feathers….dinner served. Hope Tuberville sits on his thumb.

When money talks, Saban walks. It never ceases to amaze me how just how backwards the University of Alabama is. They average a new coach every 4 years. Nick Saban averages a new job every 4 years. Do the math Bama (count on your fingers if necessary). Saban is not going to last long term. But you can at least bet he won’t leave for another NFL job…that bridge has been permanently destroyed. I don’t care who Bama hires, they will never be back on top until they realize two things: 1. You can’t beat Auburn EVERY year and 2. No one is going bring you the glory days of Bear Bryant…that era of college football is long over. Good luck Nick….you’re going to need it.

Alabama football is like old money, there’s tradition there, decades of history and tradition, count the national championships. Georgia and Tech are like tacky new money, the crap you see up in North Fulton, living high on the hog one pay check away from foreclosure on a house they can’t afford because they had a couple of good years. The Tide will be back.

Good luck to Saban in his new job. Good luck to Tide fans who think they can afford a ticket for any game other than Central Florida or Middle Tennessee State bought from desperate scalpers. All those millions have to come from somewhere and it won’t all be from the folks sitting in the luxury boxes. If he can win a national championship, the cost of tickets won’t matter, but if he muddles around at 10-3 and 9-4, the athletic department is going to have a financial crisis on its hands.

Bama’s schedule next year is very favorable. It’s not hard to see them undefeated going into Auburn.
Hard to understand why anyone would want to coach pro ball nowadays, what with the salary cap and player nonsense. College is a much better gig, and if the pay is similar, there’s no question. Get to recruit as many great players as possible, full control of player personnel, and status of local god. I can’t understand why any good college coach would be lured into the pros.

That is funny….. Alabama has to double the salary of the top NCAA coaches to get someone to step in to that quagmire of dysfunction… after being turned down by every respectable coach in the nation before Saban. Now, the coach who just went 6-10 in the pros is going to come in and just automatically win everything. That is funny. Alabama has become a pathetic program. Maybe Saban can get a fancy hat, cheat, get drunk nightly and beat his wife…. The second coming of Bear is upon us…..

Let’s face some facts here. The way Alabama has gotten rid of coaches, always expecting them to be another Bear Bryant, nobody was going to take this gig without a high dollar contract. Also, I’m a dawg fan, but I love the SEC and it will never again be one team running the conference. We will not know the best team anymore until the end of the seaosn, or close to it. Alabama thinks a good coach == dynasty. It’s not true. The SEC is more competitive than when the Bear was coaching and had boosters who could purchase the best high school players the south had to offer. Not any more. The SEC is a pretty level playing field. Even sucky Kentucky didn’t suck this year - ask the whimpering Dawgs after that game.

I’m a Vanderbilt graduate who grew up in Alabama. I did not attend school there because college football in Alabama is more important than improving people’s lives through education and other quality-of-life avenues. I’ve lived in Atlanta for thirty five years, and my kids have all graduated from Vandy as well, and we have a great life here; a place where football has it’s place-and that is certainly not at the top of the priority pole.
The people of Alabama should be embarassed by all of this-and unfortunately, their lot in life will never change until their priorties do.

Ok, I think Tideman = Mr. Delusional. It is this thinking that is either going to get Saban run or he’s going to leave for a better opportunity anyway. Anyone who thinks he will have better recruiting success there is smoking crack or thinks the Bear is still on the sidelines. There is not much talent instate, and AU is there to take some of it. At LSU, he was in a state with MUCH more talent and no one to share with. Saban is a great coach, but he is not a miracle worker. Putting that money into facilities doesn’t change the fact that Tuscaoosa sucks. Even Saban can’t put lipstick on a pig and encourage talented players from LA to play there. If he has to rely on instate players, he’s screwed, it’s not a good football state. Look for him to realize this eventually and go to a better job like:
South Carolina Clemson Texas Tech Michigan State Penn State
(just to name a few)
He’s probably already regretting he didn’t wait for a Minnesota offer.
Tideman, great talent already? Saban would not have 9 games with that crew. Shula was not THAT bad of a coach, you guys just ran him like you do every coach once it is proven the Bear was not cryogenically frozen and the coach is not him. If he was allowed to grow(or if it wasn’t for a bunch of Klansmen not hiring Croom to begin with), you could have had the same coach for the next 20 years.

Hey Tide fans. Do you Remember the last time Saban coached against Georgia? Let me refresh you memory. It was the fall of 2004. LSU had just one the National Championship the year before. Saban was a God in the eyes of Tiger fans. Oh, and by the way, Georiga won 45-16. The next year Saban left with his tiger tail tucked between his legs to the pros. Now he returns to Bama after to lousy years with the Dolphins with his head held low again. Do you actually think he’s going to make that big of a difference? Maybe in a couple of years yall will make it to the SEC championship. But coming this fall is Georgia, and the game may be in Alabama but the result will be the same as it was the last time Nick played Georgia. Quit drueling on yourselves tide fines, he won’t turn it around that quick, if at all.

I wonder if Saban knows he’s gonna be forced to wear Bear’s hat on the sideline as part of the deal?
Saban will jump when a higher profile college job comes open, like when Charlie Weis bolts from Notre Dame or Pete Carrol jumps from USC. Or when he figures out the boosters run both the major college football programs in Alabama and he can’t call the shots, he’ll leave.
Yeah, good luck with your next coaching search, Bama. You need to start it right now.

Interesting that Saban was frustrated in rebuidling the Dolphins with free agency allowing players to move around. Isn’t it the same thing when underclassmen elect to go pro? I think the money was the obvious reason. Sabans a good coach but he just floats round too much like the players.

This is going to create big problems. First of all, UGA is going to have a hard time keeping Mark Richt when an offer bigger than the one Saban just took at Bama comes in from FSU when BB retires. USC will have a hard time keeping Spurrier when he finally realizes Columbia is a place college football coaches go to die. The NCAA needs to be careful because this may lead to coaches salaries going out of the roof.

WOW, the non Alabama fans in here are really funny. Even going as far as calling Nick Saban a whore. I understand you mean he will leave any job for the next if the money is right. Well that makes about 95% of the united states population whores because we constantly change jobs for more money or what we preceive to be a better opportunity. This is what Saban has done. Sounds to me alot of SEC schools are worried about the Tide and Saban who is a proven coach and will improve recruiting for Alabama. For all of you who think Nick Saban will be gone in 4 years, I disagree. Nick Saban has made himself a short term coach for any other college or pro organization. After this last disappearing act, I would hope nobody else wants him. They would be foolish to hire him because he has not shown loyalty in any situation. Now I think nobody else will take a chance because if he leaves this job quickly, he will leave the next one also. So his job hopping has run its course. I for one hope he does well at Bama though because I love the quality of coaches in the SEC. See ya next year Bama. GO DAWGS!!!

We don’t really want Nick back at LSU. Les Miles has more than proved himself. In his first year at LSU, amidst the total hell brought by Katrina, he led us to a #5 finish for the year. This year, LSU should have played Florida for the SEC Championship and even though we didn’t, we’re sitting at #4 right now with the Sugar Bowl to be played tonight. However, we lost respect for Nick by demoting himself to, of all teams, Alabama. Good luck Bama. The ink wasn’t dry from the six year contract he had signed with LSU before he left for Miami and he was even “nice” enough to tell the players (and the state) that he was leaving to coach the Dolphins right before a bowl game. Bama - you better start looking for Nick’s replacement because it will be tough for you to find as great a coach as LSU found in Les Miles. Bring it on Nick - LSU is waiting for you next season. GEAUX TIGERS!

This is HUGE for the Bama program and it’s fans. If nothing else, Saban will stabilize a program that has been in dissarray for too many years. Shula wasn’t bad, he just wasn’t good, and he couldn’t beat Auburn. Even if Saban only stays 4-5 years Bama will have a shot at a National Championship during his tenure, the guy can recruit and he can coach!! And look at LSU, he didn’t exactly leave the cupboard bare when he left, so if he does leave in 4-6 years, the program will be on much better/stronger footing.

Saban is inheriting a pretty good team. Most of the offense will return with the exception of starting running backs. The defense has some young talent, and the kickers return. I think Saban will clean house as far as coaches go. And yes, there is always the possibility he may be gone in a few years, but with the exception of Paterno and Bowden, which D-1 schools have had the same head coach for the past 10 years? Alabama will return to a top 10 team.

Saban might indeed be a mercenary-for-hire who’ll leave Bama within 3-4 years, but he was an awesome recruiter & good coach at LSU. I expect he’ll have Bama in the SEC Title race within a few seasons. Be that as it may, the mighty Dawgs are gonna whoop some Tide hide next season.

Alabama will never land a top recruit.
Saban won’t be able to look any recruit in the eye and “promise” anything - everybody knows he’s a liar.
“Son, I’m gonna be here long after you graduate, count on me.”
“Son, I see you starting mid way through your freshman year.”
“Son, we’ll make sure you only have to take basket-weaving classes.”
No recruit will ever believe Saban and will avoid Bama like the plague!!!

From reading most of your posts, I would say most of you are worried about Bama coming back to power. Grow up guys. I live in Georgia and went to Alabama. There is not much of a difference between the states. Also Saban did meet with Huizenga. Get your facts straight before calling him a coward. If Alabama is not an important and major job, why did ESPN devote all morning to the hiring of Saban? There are only a couple of other programs that they would do that for. I don’t think UGA or Tech is one of them. I would be more worried for Richt to leave for FSU than Saban leaving for Notre Dame or another program. He has been quoted as saying Alabama is his dream job.

Alabama has had many great coaches, from Wallace Wade to Frank Thomas to Paul Bryant and Gene Stallings….the goals remain to win the SEC and compete for the National Title….I believe it will always get the players but at this desired level of competition it takes a coach who knows how to win to lead them . Coach Saban certainly fits the description…also if you need to know or if you really went to any games or to school at UA you would know that no one talks about bringing Coach Bryant back ….that comes from all the jealous folks from schools that he dominated for so long. UA wants to move forward and win with Coach Saban and a great group of returning players.

good lord. i’m an advocate of higher education and college athletics, but this is the worst example of the collegiate sports “arms race” that i have observed. ua’s overall athletic dept. expense-to-revenue ratio last year was a very healthy $5.2 million, but that doesn’t come close to what they’ve guaranteed saban. so who makes up the difference? if i were a ua student, parent, or an al. taxpayer, i’d be furious.
ua can win 8 sec championships and 3 national titles under saban, i don’t care—everyone involved in this (ua, saban, pressuring alumni) should be deeply ashamed. somehow, i doubt they are, though… .

I am seeing a lot of fear expressed as anger and they had better damn well fear the Tide if you consider the success of previous pro coaches stepping down to the college level. For example, Gene Stallings, Pete Carroll, and Steve Spurrier all won the National Championship. The Georgia game in Tuscaloosa just went from a probable win to an almost certain loss for the Dawgs. I am afraid the a* kicking will begin sooner than later. The SEC “monster” is back!!!! Only the Tide had the balls to make this move. One thing about Bama, they may not always be the best, but they will never be content until they are the best, unlike UGA that just wants to win enough to sell a few tickets, while pretending to want to be the best. I don’t believe that Bama has ever went 1-15 against any team. Or ever will.
By BadgerDawg

Russ, UA has NOT gotten the players, mainly because the state has so few recruits worth anything. They need to pay Albert Means $200K to get him out of Memphis, etc. Saban had a much better situation at LSU and he will not have the same success at Bama, although he will undoubtedly improve the team. You also say UA wants to win with Coach Saban. That may be true, but you want him to win at the Bear’s level, and that’s never going to happen again, and that’s why you run off some pretty good coaches and some others like Fran leave on their own.
John, the reason this much coverage is being devoted to it is that Nick Saban has become a soap opera. He would have received the same coverage if he took the Minnesota job after saying 1,432,555 times he didn’t want it. Alabama does get more coverage than they warrant because of the tradition, much as Nebraska does. The 2 stroies here are: 1)Saban leaves again and 2) Bama finally finds someone willing to coach there.

The folks who are denigrating Saban are simply whistling past the graveyard.
Yeah, the man was dishonest in his comments about his employment situation … just like every other coach (college and professional) who has ever been interested in another job.
And, by the way, Saban’s won a national championship. Can St. Mark Richt say that?
At age 55, Saban is getting too old to change jobs on a regular basis. He will be at Bama for the long haul … much to the chagrin of the rest of the SEC.

Nick Saban is a fake and a liar - as was “THE BEAR.”
Meeting up with a gathering of greedy, dishonest University of Alabama trustees, to spin lies and throw money at a coach is nothing unexpected for a school that foolishly elevates a man like “THE BEAR” to godlike status
Was Nick Saban’s grandfather a greedy banker? Now, Saban laughs all the way to the bank at those foolish enough to give him such money. Let’s wise up, SEC.
Read “Crimson Slide” if you’ve yet to recognize the horrific and inarguable truth that “THE BEAR’s” Football Fifth Column faction committed atrocities against college football to profit in money, empty championships and power.
Don’t want to spend the money or go to the library? Unable to read because you “graduated from Alabama? Just ask for the NCAA’s secret tapes on the University of Alabama Football program.
You don’t think “THE BEAR” which now burns below doesn’t expect a little effort on your part to maintain the covenant received by Alabama’s Boosters or the funds necessary to retain the services of this newest coach?
Saban is greedy and dodgy. What kind of intelligent college football “fan” can’t see just how greedy and gay Nick Saban is?
Aside from drunkenness and wifebeating, maybe Bryant did overnights with known homosexual prostitutes or underclassmen linebackers? Which marriage was he on?
Gene Stallings wouldn’t even agree to an interview. Perhaps he got a new prescription for his blue pills and some more child prostitutes were made available in the Dominican Republic?
Drunks, Perverts, dodgers, fascists, racists: Just like “THE BEAR” Saban and Alabama football fans are heading for the Abyss, thank G_d.
Otherwise Alabama is capitulating to the corrupt money that constantly gets Alabama on NCAA probation, and which manipulates ticket prices and religious consciousness as they wish.
Paul Bryant was a prolific coach. Why not read him and benefit from one who’s been granted immortality for having founded the winning, albeit from cheating, reputation at the self-righteous University of Alabama?
That Bama is wrought with cheaters and corruptness is transparently obvious. Avoiding the evidence is not the mark of a strong intellectual football fan, casual observer or crimson-bleeding Bama Patriot.
Grow your brains, Tide Nation. Access the evidence. Unless each of you is a committed simpleton, fraud, racist, fascist, bigot and traitor to the Alabama Dream of Excellence, look at the evidence.
If you’re committed and conformed to stupidity and cheating, just admit it and I won’t knowingly expend any further effort trying to convince you of what any awake person, even those who attended the University of Alabama should easily be able to recognize.
Engage the minds G_d gave you, Alabama foolish ones. Make your ancestors proud.
Whether you’re an Alabama Native, Roman Catholic or duped into prostituting to their football interests is immaterial.
NCAA Death Penalty to Alabama for cheating!
Like “THE BEAR” before them, Saban and all Alabama Boosters will be laughing from the other sides of their faces hanging next to thirteen-turn “NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP” knots.
Alabama, what will you and “Coach Saban” do once your precious football program receives the “Death Penalty” it has SO richly deserved for so long?
ROLL TIDE, indeed.

Maybe UA and UVA are THE two powerhouses, but I don’t think that fact means anything. A better stat would be that you’ve had something like 15 coaches in the last 25 years because no one is good enough, or if they are, they want the next decent job that presents itself because they don’t want any part of the alumni/fan base/trustees. And if anyone doesn’t think that Bama lives in the past, what has Paul Bryant Jr. done besides have a name to warrant being on the board?

How bout the shalacking UGA handed the kitty kats in 05 at the SEC title game? And your MNC of 03 means little to me - the only difference between LSU’s season in 03 and UGA’s in 02 is that there were not 2 undefeated teams in 03. Both lost one game, both won the Sugar Bowl. We are happy because we have gotten a coach who has at least proven himself in the college football arena. We are happy because we love Crimson Tide football. And, he’s not the only coach to lie about leaving. “They will have to carry me out of Oxford in a pine box.” Does that ring any bells?
Maybe we do obsess over our football, but last time I checked ND, USC, UGA, Michigan, Auburn, etc. don’t just play for the heck of it on Saturday afternoons.
What’s wrong with wanting to be the best? I don’t think any of the other schools listed above wouldn’t want to be the best?
What’s the point of wanting to be average, and if you have to think about it, then you shouldn’t be playing the game.
My two cents.

Everyone is right! Nick Saban is a very good COLLEGE coach & is also extremely dishonest . Alabama has a rich football tradition with shameful boosters & little integrity. They truly are a great match . Both garner little respect . Those who said Mark Richt or UGA would stoop to the level these two did are idiots . Saying I need to think about my family when your making 4 million a year from the Dolhins & implying your family would be better in Alabama than south Florida is pathetic . Wayne Huizenga , the Dolphins owner who was screwed over , was actually the one who came out looking descent . I think I have a favorite AFC team .

* My Reckonin’ *
OK, based upon their history, * Alabama is undisputedly one of the top 3 football programs in the nation. * Anyone who doesn’t recognize this to be fact must have a short sighted view of college football from a historical perspective or a biased opinion that distorts their reasoning.
* This is a win-win-win situation for all involved parties! * Everyone gets what they need….See, Saban removed the possibility of being fired in the next year or so plus he gets the opportunity to return to an environment where he’s a proven winner. Plus, Moore finally delivered the high profile coach that justified his recent firing of Shula. Furthermore, Wayne H. was able rid himself of a coach that clearly was struggling at the NFL level.
While I’m not downplaying the importance of good coaching, please do not underestimate the role that talent plays in the college game. Talent that will be obtained on a scale that hasn’t been seen in years due to the natural recruiting ability that Saban will have…we’re talking the states of Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. We’re talking Big 10 land with Michigan from his MSU days and Ohio from his time with the Browns. Other than California, Saban may have his “pick of the litter” with regard the blue chippers. Texas? Check your geography – it’s one state removed from LSU land Louisiana and he’s familiar with there as well. My prediction: SEC title in 1 - 2 years…National Title in 3 – 4 years. Tide was loaded with talent…don’t let that sorry record fool ya! Shula was like an old grandmother taking a nice quiet ride in a Porche. Trust me – he had the horses…he just never stepped on the gas. Saban will remind everyone that Alabama is a team to be reckoned with…of course, this is must my reckonin’ :) - B. Green in SW ATL

Rolltide, #1 Classless post, #2 at least they are alive and not dead, #3 no Dawg RB has ever been benched because he wasn’t Herschel or at AuBarn because he wasn’t Bo. Your team has never had a player of that caliber. To say you live in the past by expecting every coach to be the 2nd coming is not hypocrtitical, and if you understood what the word meant you wouldn’t use it that way. For you and all Tide fans on here right now, don’t be like Gamecock Gary and post from now until the game when you get beat up. This will definatly do a lot for the UGA/Bama rivalry. However, I am not sure that the brass at Alabama is smart enough to keep Saban if he doesn’t win a national championship in the next 2 seasons. Nick Saban will win if he is given the opportunity to do it his way. I think that Saban made Alabama put up the guaranteed $$$$ so that he could rebuild the program the way he wants to.

Wow, I haven’t seen this many people complaining since the Democrats lost the last Presidential election.
Looks like there are a lot of nervous, scared and jealous people out there.
Why do all of you care how many coaches Alabama has had? How has it changed your life to make you this angry? I think the probabtion hurt and then a stupid decision by an up and coming coach at the time.
It’s funny how nobody made any comments about Florida having their third coach since Spurrier’s last year when he left in 2002 or Notre Dame on their 4th coach since 2001. And they haven’t even been on probation.
Maybe you should all just look deep down inside and admit you are scared.

B, I like your optimism, but to think he’s going to waltz into Michigan and Ohio and bring kids to Tuscaloosa is insane. He couldn’t even do that at LSU. Same with Texas, same with Louisiana. At LSU he got a lot of instate kids because the state is loaded with talent. That talent doesn’t exist in Alabama, and even if it did it would be split with AUBarn. He’s got a tough job ahead of him, the recruiting is going to have to go regional because the state doesn’t have any players. If he could go back to LSU instead, we all know he would choose that, it’s a much better job because recruiting is easier. Tuscaloosa is also a tough sell, Alabama has tradition and nothing else(except now a very good coach).

These past champions can absolutely be compared to ” The Bear” whom I also met at THE SENIOR BOWL in Mobile AL 1980. YOU show your classlessness by talking also about David Pollack, a local HS hero at Parkview and UGA ALL AMERICAN who has probably played his last down in football as if you could carry any of these great aforementioned hero’s jock strap you BAMA A*****! I’ll give you a few examples and this is just in this week’s BCS games, LSU’S starting QB Jamarcus Rusell from Mobile, Alabama is in the Allstate(formerly Nokia) Sugar Bowl in Nawlins.
Also Pat White, starting QB and MVP of the Gator Bowl New Year’s Day from my home town of Daphne, Alabama came back and beat Georgia Tech for WVU. WDE, funny post. Thanks for proving my point. You just mentioned five players and had to go back 30-40 years to do it. The state of Alabama is chumpsville from a talent standpoint(as well as most others although I do like Mountain Brook.) I just did a quick search on scout.com for 4 star athletes this year:
GA-20 FL-39 LA-14 MS-7 SC-10 AL-8 TN-8 AR-8
Thanks for giving me a little incentive to back this up with facts that very outside the state already knows. And if you think fake LA is God’s country, I feel more sorry for you than I do Tide fans. I had to go to Enterprise once, and I couldn’t believe that people in Troy etc. didn’t have a choice to move. The place is a voluntary prison.

Both Tuberville and Richt have done ok against Saban, so I would not count my chickens too soon. Tuberville went 3-2 against Saban and Richt 1-2 but pummelled the defending National Champs in their last meeting. Doesn’t sound like we should exactly be shaking in our cleats does it?

As both a Dolphins and UGA fan, I’ve got mixed feelings. Unlike most people, I think it’s actually good for the Fins that he’s gone. There’s no reason to believe his system works in the NFL (Dolphins worse off now than pre-Saban), and his heart clearly wasn’t in pro football.
As a UGA fan, it makes the SEC that much tougher, which sucks. I’m still glad we have Richt though b/c I know he’ll still be at UGA in five years. Can’t say the same for Saban. Looking forward to Richt and Stafford welcoming Saban back to the SEC…how did Saban do against us last time?
By BadgerDawg

WDE, the point was exactly what I made: talent in Alabama isn’t good, Saban isn’t going to be able to just get most of his players instate if he wants a chance of winning. He could do that at LSU. Combine that with no instate competition and LSU is hands down a better job and Saban is not going to immediately bring SEC championships, although he should be able to put egomaniac TT in his place within a couple of years and at least have the state crown.
By the way, I’m no geography buff but you should refer to the coast and not lower Alabama if you want to exclude Dothan, Montgomery, etc. I was born in New Orleans and lived briefly in Gulfport, so I do know a little. Maybe now that casinos are there its worth something. Before, it was a waste.

Badgerdawg, #1 you want a class post look CJ2 from earlier today that is tasteless, I just simply stated the truth. #2 so its okay to make fun of some body because their dead? The bear was a good man and arguably the best coach ever. #3 we haven’t had a Bo or Herschel?? No we might not have a heisman, but ill take titles any day of the week over heismans and if u don’t agree you are dumb. Georgia has 13 players in the college football hall of fame; auburn has 11… wanna guess how many Alabama has 19. Alabama has had 92 All-Americans. Starr, Stabler, Namath, Newsome, Hutson, Humphrey, Castille, Palmer, Bennett, Thomas, and the reigning defensive rookie of the year Ryans to name a few. And if you really think ya’ll are gonna put a whooping on us next year in ttown, you got another thing coming…

Hey Bob, Nope, not great stuff at all but I prefer to see who wins the war, not the battles. LSU finished #5 with Les Miles coming in for his first year with all the hell and chaos that was Katrina and Rita and in spite of all the hellish disruptions, LSU still finished #5 in the polls. I wonder how good UGA would have done last year with 22 people living in the QB’s apartment? Having to play the first home game in Arizona, having to play Tennessee on Monday night days after Rita slammed into the other half of our state and not having any off weeks… I’m proud of the way our team held itself together through Katrina, the worst natural disaster in our country’s history and then three weeks later, Rita, the strongest storm to ever hit the USA. Our entire season was turned upside down and we overcame. Back to the money - Maybe the ex-students at Haralson County High School in west Georgia that counterfeited money on the high school’s printer and actually passed some of it out in the Tallapoosa area before they got caught can give Bama some pointers if they need to come up with some quick cash to pay Nick…lol Just remember Bama - GREEN paper! I really have no hard feelings against Nick but I do wonder why he had to come out about it TODAY. Its amazing to see these Alabama people thinking they are back, seeing as Alabama football has been no where over the past 15 years I guess there is no where to go but up. You Alabama rednecks are so full of yourselves that you think a coach makes you championship material. Sorry, USC, Texas, Miami, Ohio St., etc., you will never be. Saban is going to find the same problem as Steve Spurrier is having and what Butch Davis is going to find out… ego driven coaches thinking they can turn around any program b/c of who they are. Tuscaloosa is a dump and why any kid would want to go and spend 4 years of their life there is beyond me. And Alabama redneck boy, if you think Slick Nick is going to stick around for any more than 4 years, I think you have taken on to many mullets to the head.
And why Nick Saben would trade a $7m plush house on the Atlantic Ocean in Ft. Lauderdale for redneck central Alabama where going to the local Wal Mart on a Friday night is the highlight of the weekend is also quite mind blowing. Actually its not b/c when a person realizes he can’t cut it as a CEO and decides to go back and be a VP, I guess it makes perfect sense.

I grew up here in Atlanta watching Alabama football with my Dad. I learned early on that anything less than #1 was losing to a Bama fan. No other school could possibly understand that mentality let alone a school from the SEC. Don’t get me wrong, the SEC is awesome! I just hope that all of the other fans on this blog can appreciate the pride a Bama fan feels just knowing that a winning season is in the very near future. I support Saban and I look forward to the day when Bama football means winning again.

Coot boy..Please explain to me what I know nothing about? But before you do I will tell what I do know. Alabama has been nothing since 1992…thats 15 years for you Alabama folks if you can’t count. And even then you were lucky to win it that year. You have 1 title in the modern age of college football. You fired a coach who was 10-2 not a year ago and you egotistical people had the audasity to fire him even when you were on probation for some of the worst paying of players we have ever seen in college football history. You still live in the stone age of Bear Bryant and wish he would rise up and coach again, you can’t get past the fact the guy is DEAD!!!!! And face it, Auburn is just better than you thats why you can’t beat them.
Coot boy, did I get anything wrong? If you want me to go on I will continue. But there is so many crap things about Alabama football I just don’t know where to stop.

And you Bama fans need to stop talking so much smack about being “back”. You’re not back yet. Saban’s a great coach, but the SEC West is loaded, and I don’t think Auburn and LSU are just going to lay down and die for you. He didn’t even win the West in his final season at LSU. Saban does not equal an automatic championship, so quit counting your chickens.

First off, the post in here have been crazy. This is too funny. And second, as a Georgia fan…i’m not scared of Alabama and neither is the rest of the SEC…why you may ask? Because its not like were experiencing a new coach that we don’t know whats coming, we know exactly whats coming. The quality of coaches has grown better and the SEC has just grown to be stronger. Bama will be good next year but not as good as Bama fans want to believe. And oh yeah, for people saying Alabama doesn’t have high school football talent…your kidding right? Bama has a lot of high school football talent. Just check your local recruiting site and you will see that. So he can definitely build a winner there again…but it ain’t coming against my Dawgs.

Well, I don’t think anybody can say the ‘glory days’ are back at Bama, but I do think this is a good ‘first step’ at getting to so new ‘glory days’. So far, all we’ve done with this move is throw money at ‘it’, and Steinbrenner has proved in NY that money alone does not a winner make. A lot of work to do; and, although I was not a fan of Mike Shula, he left THE UNIVERSITY in good shape with outstanding, young, quality athletes.

Russ says, “…also if you need to know or if you really went to any games or to school at UA you would know that no one talks about bringing Coach Bryant back ….that comes from all the jealous folks from schools that he dominated for so long.” Uh-huh…that’s why all the stores in T-town are stocked full of those funny looking hats he used to wear. Saban is a good coach and he will at least produce winning seasons at Bama….but all this talk about SEC Championships and National Championships is a bit pre-mature. He hasn’t even gotten his complimentary Bear hat from the boosters yet and he’s already “mini-Bear”. Let’s see what can be said this time next year. There’s too much parity in college football nowadays so you might as well forget any dynasty in the SEC. I predict Saban will get Bama to 2 SEC Championship games (winning just 1) but no National Championships in the 4 years he’ll be allowed to coach. I say 4 because he’ll go 1-3 against Auburn and have a brick thrown through his window, his life threatened and some farm animal sacrificed on his lawn. Enjoy the moment Bama fans! See you back here in 12 months after another successful Independence Bowl.

Sure Bama will be good……Saban IS a good coach.
The trouble is so is Tubberville…so is Miles at LSU.
Saban WON’T win a N.C. at Bama because of the above. He will have 10-2 or 11-1 teams, but Bama will have to prove they are the best school in Alabama before they think national!
By Brett

Saban will be successful, much like Shula did, but it won’t be the success that Alabama wants and it never will be until Bama gets past the Bear Bryant years.
Get the hint, Bama. Bear Bryant is no more and you will never find a guy who will coach and win the way the Bear did. Even Stallings didn’t do it the way Bear did. If you want to get back to the way things used to be, then you are going to have to find a new way to do it. Stop holding the Bear’s image above everyone’s head, or else you will never succeed like you want.
I was Bulldog born, Bulldog bred and when I die, I’ll be Bulldog dead. God love Vince Dooley, the success he had the impression he has left with UGA. But I promise you, had we continued to hold his image above our coaches heads (like we did with Goff & Donnan), we would not be where we are now (see Richt).

Conratulations ‘Bama on landing a fine accomplished coach. However, if I were a competing coach in the SEC, I would be licking my chops at the opportunity to recruit against him with his lack of credibility (the truth eludes him) and the inevitable likelihood of him chasing the big check once again. Reminds me of that ole prostitution joke….”we’ve already established what you are, we’re just haggling over the price.” Best wishes!

Hey Brett, if you are comparing your Vince Dooley to Bear Bryant, well, you may want to rethink that. There isnt much of a comparison. I agree that the “old schoolers” need to let go of the past at Alabama, and hirnig Saban was a big step towards that.
To those who continually keep mouthing off about talent and recruiting at Alabama, here is an opinion from the expert on the subject, Mel Kiper.
Mel Kiper: Just look at the players he produced at LSU. He has a laundry list of players in the NFL. Look at Alabama. Their recruiting classes in 2006 was in the top 15 overall. In 2005, it was in the top 15, same for 2004. The last three years has been a top 15 recruiting class overall. There is some talent there at Alabama. If you look at LSU, they were in the top 5. Prior to that they had a good run. But overall, he’ll get Alabama in the top 5-7. I’ve maintained that Alabama is in the top 5 of being an elite program. I think it proved out that when you can get Nick Saban to leave the NFL for Alabama. Remember, Mike Shula and other coaches won 10 games at some point.

No, he came back because he realized he’d screwed Miami into the ground with that turd-witted Daunte Culpepper deal, and he decided to get out while he still could.
Saban’s record at LSU was 48-16 (0.750), not as good as Richt’s 61-17 (0.782). Saban’s first three seasons were 8-4, 10-3, and 8-5. I want an Alabama fan to come on here with a straight face and say they would be happy with 8-4, 10-3, 8-5 in Saban’s first three years at a cost of $12 million. Anybody? Anybody?

Hey Doug. I agree Richt is a great coach. And Saban hasn’t proven anything yet. But Alabama won’t be 8-4 next year. Maybe 10-3. I’ll accept that as long as the Tide beats Auburn and/or LSU. But by 2008, look out. Recruits will be flocking to Bama by then if not already. How do you think LSU and Auburn got loaded in the first place? Because Bama was on NCAA restrictions and couldn’t sign very many kids. But it’s all good now! Roll Tide! BTW I wouldn’t want to be a Dawg fan in Tuscaloosa on Sept 22.

Congratulations BAMA on getting the coach you folks originally wanted. However, I don’t believe a yearly salary of $290k/game at Bama vs $240k/game at Miami is a cut in pay. Can’t wait to see the Bama fans swoon and hyperventilate at today’s press conference
Should have gave Shula one more year. If Saban doesn’t beat Auburn 3 times, trounce Croom yearly for his recent indiscretion, and get Alabama a NC within 5 years they will fire him too.
He will get more money no matter what. Lose to Auburn 4 straight years - fired - $16 million contract bought out. Win a NC - contract extended - big raise to keep the Irish away. All the SEC coaches agents need to send St. Nick a belated Christmas present. BAMA just started the Star Wars defense program by dropping the 4 megaton bomb.
No doubt St. Nick will say whatever it takes to get you to believe him. That houndstooth hat he needs to wear will look very appropriate with his fishnet stockings and high heels.
I can’t believe the tide will stay out of recruiting trouble for the next 8 years with their meddlesome boosters.
BAMA vs LSU football games should now be designated as the “irony bowl”.

Out of the liar’s own mouth: “The best way to disrespect someone is to turn your back on them” Sound familiar? Nick Saban always talked a lot about loyalty and integrity and toughness. But, in the end, these were not his guides. They were only the kinds of things he demanded of others,as evidenced by his intentional deceit.I couldn’t care less what Bama does , we play them 2 out of every 8 years, and last I checked they were carried out on a stretcher leaving Athens.Just remember Bama fans he will eventually leave you too for the next best thing that comes along.History proves this.

Its actually quite funny really about Alabama people. Lets go back 3 years shall we: They had a coach by the name of Dennis Franchione and after 1 season decided to bolt to his dream job at Texas A&M. My god you would have thought the world would have ended and all these Alabama redneck boys were calling him names you can’t even put on this blog. Now Slick Nick the Snake does the same thing and you people are all in favor of it. There is a word for all of you…HYPOCRITE!! For those in Alabama not really sure what that means, there is thing called the dictionary that you can find the meaning.
And Matt Fatboy…for a school who is still on probation for paying players to come there (and the funnier thing is, you still could not win even after paying them) and for a school that thinks they are all full of themselves after not winning jack for 15 years, trust me, you are no where near USC, Texas, Miami and Ohio St. And no you don’t have more titles than all those schools. We actually live in reality, so should you.

Congrats to Auburn’s little brother, the unibusity of alabammer! You have finally lucked into a semi-competent coach at the bargain-basement price of $4 million per year!
After all those years of “Franchione lied and bammer doesn’t need no-class liars like him” and “Tubberville lied before he took the Auburn job… bamemr would NEVER hire anyone that dishonest!!”, we now have Little Nicky $aban who looked the entire country in the face and LIED HIS A$$ OFF!!! Okay. I’ll wager this. Alabama will have its 13th national Championship before Georgia gets its 3rd. Any takers? And in case you haven’t noticed, Alabama owns Georgia 35-24-4 all-time. Tidefan00, I wasn’t comparing Bear and Dooley’s coaching…I was comparing the alumni’s inability to let go of the past. There is no doubt that Bear was one of the greatest coaches in history. I have no problems with Alabama or any of it’s programs, so relax. There are only 4 things I hate in college football: Florida, Georgia Tech, Steve Spurrier and the BCS. Tennessee is a distant 5th.

Even more hilarious reasoning by the delusional bammers!!! Nick Saban was hired because bammer “wants to run a clean program”!!! ROTFL!!!
Hey bammer! Last time you went slave-trading in Memphis and paid $110,000 for a defensive lineman, the high school coaches involved admitted that you were bidding against a number of other schools. Guess what another one of those schools was that you were bidding against? Michigan State
And now guess who was the coach for Michigan State while that bidding war was taking place?
C’mon… you can guess the right answer if you try…
That’s right!!! You guessed it!!! Little Nicky $aban!!!
So is bammer BACK???? Yep… bammer is back… right in the bidding wars where they feel most comfortable!!!

Tide Rules, I’ll take that bet.
Georgia football over the last 10 seasons: 96-30, two SEC titles, 10 bowl games, eight bowl wins.
Alabama football over the same period: 67-55, one SEC title, six bowl games, two bowl wins.
Saban’s good, I won’t dispute that. But I have yet to see anything that would indicate he’s substantially better than Georgia’s guy.
Keep bringing up the Bear all you want, but he’s not coming back, not even under Saban.

His lack of integrity & feminine mannerisms will make it hard for Nick Saban to compete for a title in the region of light . Georgia will beat Alabama next year & for years to come . Good always defeats evil & the wheels of justice are always spinning . If we were in a galaxy far far away Nick Saban would be Darth Vader & Mark Richt would be Luke Skywalker . Signing Daunte Culpepper after the lake Manatoka sex scandal shows Nick Sabans draw to darkness & sin . Drew Brees was a better qb but was to good & pure for Saban to take . His yearning to help & uplift the gulf coast after Katrina show this also his 94.7 passer rating does as well . Mark Richt would have signed Drew Brees . Alabama you have turned your back on all that is good & pure about sport & for that you will pay !

Bama fans are welcoming Saban to Tuscaloser like the Jews welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem before they crusified him. No coach who has won a national championship at one school, then left for somewhere else has been able to repeat that sucess. Bama’s expectations have already set him up to fail. I also don’t know what talent they are talking about that is supposedly at Bama. Tommy has consistantly dominated Shula in recruiting. So Saban will be starting out with a big disadvantage. Bama fans with eyes and brains have to admit that this is not the 70’s anymore. The college football world does not revolve around Tuscaloser. If Saban loses to Auburn in Auburn next year they will be second-guesing. If he loses to AU in 2008 where Bama has never beaten Auburn, there will be lots of grumbling. Three in a row and they will have his head on a stake in front of Bryant-Denny-Tuberville stadium.

To all you big headed Ga fans. I hope you have enjoyed your recent glory (which is now over) while Tennessee and Florida rebuilt and went through some changes. As I recall you accomplished very little in this time other than a couple SEC champs and getting blown out in some bowl games. You arent a NC team. Never have been. Never will be. Now you are back to #3 in the East.
Good thing you get to line up against Bama this season, so all the talk wont be just talk. They can settle it on the field, and we will see who goes out on a stretcher.
To the idiot Squirrel talking about Saban turning his back on the Dolphins. You need to learn to read. He left only after Huizenga gave his blessing, otherwise he would have stayed with the Dolphins. Your jealousy, fear and envy is so obvious its sickening!

Dear Oldtimer,
No one was talking about SAT scores, as not everyone who does well (or poorly, for that matter) on the SAT goes to an SEC school.
For the sake of this topic, it is the Alabama graduates ON THIS BLOG who demonstrate POOR grammar, spelling and punctuation in the English language that would earn them failing grades in elementary school. However, those BAMA graduates have now (repeatedly) demonstrated to us that those same levels of competency can get you a degree from the ‘great’ University of Alabama.
RE: “Now, let’s see; who’s poorly educated?”
Who is poorly educated? Apparently, those who ‘graduate’ from the University of Alabama.
THE UNIVERSITY of ALABAMA: If you can say “ROLL TIDE!” without pausing, you get an ‘A’ in English.

One of the sports networks speculates Nick regrets leaving LSU and wants to come back to college ball. That could possibly be true. We (LSU fans) tried to be understanding when he left for Miami because he was going to coach in the NFL and many consider that a more prestigeous coaching job. One thing I could never get out of my mind was that he walked out on LSU after signing a six year contract. Now he walks out again. I’m trying to get my 20 year old Georgia-born (and raised until the age of 14) son to understand the responsibility that comes with signing a contract and how detrimental it is if you fail to keep it. People like Nick Saban do not help and are pathetic role models for young people in the regard. I still wish him the best and I bet it is true that he wishes he could come back to Baton Rouge. Too bad we found someone we like just as much even though we were prepared to dislike him and made him prove himself to us before we jumped on the Les Miles bandwagon. Both are great coaches and the next LSU/Bama game will be very interesting. I always pull for Bama when they play Auburn anyway because ever since they came into Tiger Stadium and stomped on our Eye of the Tiger mid-field, they showed what classless jerks they are. It takes a special class of football players to get a “unsportsmanlike conduct” penalty before the teams are even on their respective benches. That was just rude. And a quick off topic comment about another rude team - When Ole Miss came into Tiger Stadium in November, their band played constantly during on-field presentations and ruined the moment for people being recognized. Showed their true lack of class as well!

This will make the SEC even tougher. I think Alabama has a bad football program and even though they went 10-2 last year, they have not really done anything in years. I hope they get their money out of it because paying a coach that much money could come back to haunt them. Look at the yankees. I don’t think he will do a lot for a couple of years. Steve Spurrier is at a bad football school and will take him years to do anything. Auburn will have beaten Bama five more years before Saban will be able to do anything great. WAR EAGLE!!!!

Donna, Lets be realistic OK. First, Ive been to BR PLENY of times, and there is no lack of disrespect, drunkeness, bottle throwing, spitting and cursing in that s**-hole you all call a stadium.
Secondy, your love affair with Les Miles is about to end once Fisher leaves and Jamarcus (and other Saban recruits) graduate or go pro. Miles is mediocre at best.
Also, to pretend Saban has some allegience or love for LSU is pure hogwash. If that were the case, he wouldnt have been persuaded to take a job in Miami that he and his wife absolutely didnt really want to take in the first place.
Lastly, it only takes about ten minutes walking around the beautiful Alabama campus, walking into the state of the art facilites, feeling the enthusiasm of the fans and students, and walking onto one of the finest fields with ultra-hi tech multimedia and near record capacity, to realize LSU is a not much more than a public toilet.
Happy Mardi Gras, lets all go throw up and pass out. Geaux Tigers!

The saddest thing about all this back ‘n forth between the UA, AU, UGA and other SEC fans is that except for UF we’re done for the season and nothing on this blog amounts to anything more than wishful thinking.
UA - win a game, in fact, have a winning season, and then start bragging, not before. You can be happy you got a proven coach, but he’s proven a few other things about himself over his past 3 jobs in the past what, 10 years?
Now, on to my own wishful thinking: I predict that Saban will have a good season next year but Auburn will still hand him his a* on a platter on the Plains next November and the whining in Tuscalooser will begin once again. He’ll FINALLY beat AU in Tuscaloosa giving the Tide its first home win in the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa since the game when home and home, but it won’t be like when the IB was played every year in B’ham at the Tide’s “other” home field - it will likely be a 50/50 split now. Tubs has proven he can beat Saban teams. Bring it on.

Dearest Donna:
What irony it is to hear a discussion of “class” from a member of a fanbase well known in Baton Rouge for: urinating in cups and pouring it on opposing fans; throwing trash on the opposing coach’s family members as they walk to their bus; hitting an elderly AU fan recovering from brain cancer in the head with a thrown cup; setting fire to opposing fans vans/cars that are parked in Baton Rouge; generally foul-mouthed, rudeness from the ages of 9 to 90; etc. etc.

LSU is a much better job and Saban wishes he had it back.
He will not be able to recruit top players from out of state to that place. He will not win if he relies n instate.

BadgerDawg, who is obviously black, wants to make everything about race. Equating Bama to Nebraska (which is notoriously white players) and standing up for the katrina ravaged poor LSU is so obviously racially biased.
Its not about Black and White you friggin moron. Croom is a sub-standard coach, period. He peaked beating bama this year, which was a blessing because it got Shula out of there and Saban in! And as far as recruiting, who said Saban had to stay in state? Where is that coming from? Alabama traditionally pulls 60% of in state talen, even under Shula. Bringin in Saban opens the door to recruiting NATIONALLY. Bamas top prospect right now is out of Florida, QB Marve.
So talk about something you know. Like hoops or ham hocks, but leave the football to those of us who have season tickets, not to those who sell tickets and parking spaces on the sidewalks.

Now on to your other assinine comment…”To the idiot Squirrel talking about Saban turning his back on the Dolphins. You need to learn to read. He left only after Huizenga gave his blessing, otherwise he would have stayed with the Dolphins. ” I can actually read more than one newspaper …this from the Miami Hearld :Huizenga has too much pride to admit he made a colossal mistake. Besides, he always takes pains to part on a friendly note. In Huizenga’s world, this is known as leaving something on the table, and he is unbeatable at it. To think that Saban only left after getting Huizenga’s blessing shows how simple minded you must be. Another excerpt from the Miami Hearld’s Dan Lebatard….He will be remembered in these parts as a quitter and a liar. He leaves the franchise in last place, with what used to be his good name somehow far lower than that. He was, at the end, literally unbelievable.Saban could have fixed his sinking reputation Wednesday if he had that mental toughness he is always sermonizing about. We have the meandering spiel memorized by now. About ”competitive character” and ”overcoming adversity” and blah, blah, blah. You preached it, Nick, with the polish of a snake-oil salesman. Klan Tidester, I make nothing about race except this because it so obvious. I was in Birmingham after the decision and even the sports talk there was saying it was racially biased. You put the pedigrees side by side without a picture and Alabama has to hire Croom. As for recruiting, good luck recruiting anyone with a brain to that hellhole. The only people wanting to play there are people who grew up rooting for the school. Even Saban won’t change that. I’m just imagining the first recruit from anywhere not connecting the state to say “I just can’t wait to spend four years in Tuscaloosa.” He must have been paid big time or has no brain to begin with.

I don’t care where you graduated from. History shows who the big dog in the SEC is and that’s Alabama. So the Bear won 6 championships. Alabama is the king of football around here; always has been, always will be. Everybody has down years, everybody rebuilds, everybody gets caught by the NCAA once in a while. Get over it! If Saban wins and bolts, as he did at Michigan State and LSU, or if he fails to win $32 million worth of games, Saban will have done more to make Alabama football smaller than anything the three Mikes ever did. The way to success in the SEC, as Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida have illustrated, is to hire coaches on their way up who will build programs that last.
That Moore chose to spend the money to hire Saban shows how desperate the university is. It’s an all-or-nothing bet, and the early line is pick ‘em.

I think that Saban will definitely be an upgrade to the Bama coaching staff. He is a good coach. Maybe Bama will consistently make it Shreveport for a bowl. That would certainly be an upgrade for Bama. Maybe they can avoid the 3-4 win seasons they tend to have every few years. Maybe they wont lose to Mississippi State again. Maybe they will make the Iron Bowl Competitive again. Maybe he can take that “Stockpile of Talent” that took them to 6-7 this year and turn it around to a 7-6 year in 07. Maybe his Players won’t get Ice Cream Cones for carrying Stolen firearms and Marijuana. Maybe he wont be fired after 3 years. Maybe Bama fans will grow some of their teeth back. Wait, I forgot…. Alabama should have hired Saddam Hussein because Alabama don’t need to spend lots of millions dollars.. so they can paying him couples of thousand dollars. Oh Dang, I forgot… He’s dead! Saddam is way better coaching over Saban. Dont you think?

BamaBamaBama, please go to the NCAA website and see the number of NC that they credit Alabama with. You will see that they show 7. So your 7 nc to Georgias 5 is not as impressive as you think. Mich. has almost twice what you have.

Gee, it’s great to be a BAMA fan!
I know that it is frustrating for some of you to see the turning of the Tide, and I am willing to forgive your ignorant and envious rantings as you see the end of your reprieve from Crimson Tide domination coming into view.
This has been in the making for some time. Mike Shula did an excellent job of rehabilitating the Bama football program and preparing it for it’s inevitable return to eminence in the Southeastern Conference. Whatever anyone may think of his qualifications as a head coach, he is an honorable man who loves the University of Alabama and respects the tradition of excellence that it has historically embodied. Had he remained at Alabama, he would have done well next year. Bama fans owe Mike Shula a debt of gratitude for the job that he has done in laying the foundation for success at the Capstone. Nick Saban is now in an enviable position to take the Crimson Tide to the next level. I am confident that you will all be impressed with the results.
It is an honor for all Alabamians to host the finest academic institution in the SEC at UA, because we are in the company of such admirable peers. I know from past experience that it is also a great honor to host the premier football program in the SEC. It is going to be a pleasant experience to witness this occurrence.
Bama will never again consistently dominate the SEC nor the NCAA as it did under Coach Bryant. Those days are over and it is a different game now. But we WILL get our share of wins now and we WILL contend for championships at all levels. You may deny this to your heart’s content, but time will prove you wrong.
I invite all of you to come back and discuss the issue this time next year!

From espn.com, the guy may be biased but I think he has earned a little credibility:
*Don Shula’s take Miami Dolphins legendary coach Don Shula told ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike that he wasn’t too thrilled about the way Alabama dismissed his son as coach — or the way Nick Saban left the Dolphins. ListenInsider
And that’s not all. Shula told the Miami Herald:
• That Saban let the Dolphins down: “He has run away from the challenge.”
• That Saban lied: “It’s unbelievable. There were four or five direct statements that were blatant lies. That tells you a little bit about the guy.”
• That Saban quit: “That’s obvious. He quit. He left.”
• That Saban is a fraud: “What other conclusion can you draw? The guy likes to hear himself talk and then doesn’t follow up on what he says.”*
TrueCrimson, classy post, but you must really be up in the clouds with this one:

OK, your football tradition is unparalleled in the SEC, but you’re going way too far with the academic comments. This may be the first time UA has ever been confused with Vandy. Also, the SEC is basically filled with 2nd rate institutions outside of Vandy, UGA, and UF. That is one area I don’t think the SEC will ever be confused with the ACC or Big 10.

The above statement has got to be the funniest, most absurd statement in this entire blog.
Vandy does to Alabama in academics what Alabama does to Vandy in football.
Dear TrueCrimson,
Regarding your “past experience,” anything that you have EXPERIENCED is in the PAST, you Dumb@$$. - There is no need to be so redundant, especially you are so much “smarter” than the rest of us non-Alabama graduates on here.

BadgerDawg,
There is no way to make the firing of a head coach a pretty event. I understand Don Shula’s frustration.
You assume to know the heart and mind of Nick Saban when you denounce him as a liar. I have no reason to believe that he had made a commitment to the University of Alabama prior to the time at which he made a public announcement to that effect. If he had, then Mal Moore wouldn’t have pursued other coaches.
Nick Saban took a shot at coaching in the NFL and found that it wasn’t what he wanted. Steve Spurrier had a similar experience. If his heart wasn’t in it, it would have been unfair to the team, the owner and the fans for him to remain in the HC position at Miami. Much can be made of contractual obligations, but let’s face facts, no head coaching contract is truly binding in this day and age. I have heard people ranting that Saban is only “going for the money”. Taking a pay cut is a strange way to achieve this goal.
As for academics, the University of Alabama and Auburn University are both world-class institutions of higher education. If you want to argue otherwise, provide some facts to back up your opinions.
My advice to you… You cannot make a fine wine from sour grapes. However, your whine is top-shelf.

However, I have NO facts whatsoever to back up my own outlandish, absurd claims.
I guess this severe flaw in my own logic is why everyone else on this blog mentions how unprepared Alabama graduates are.
Maybe I should’ve gone to school somewhere outside of the state of Alabama so I wouldn’t look so foolish right now.

I am the one and only “TrueCrimson”.
Accept no substitute.
The University of Alabama and Auburn University were both ranked in the top 50 universities by US News and World report in 2006.
Five students from The University of Alabama have been named to this year’s USA Today All-USA College Academic Team – the most of any school in the nation.
This year’s team brings UA’s total for the last three years to 14, a figure that also tops all other colleges and universities. Four UA students were chosen for the 2004 team and five for the 2003 team.
A total of 84 students nationwide were selected for this year’s team. Yale has three students on the team, the second highest total for a single university.
For the past two years, Harvard or Alabama has had the most students selected. This year Harvard had two students on the team.
Aside from academic excellence, the University of Alabama provides an opportunity for it’s students to enjoy a rich environment for growth of character and development of a winning attitude. I am tired of hearing people with no knowledge of SEC universities deride the reputation of these fine institutions.
Rating UA as “the finest” certainly betrays my own personal bias. Yet there is no doubt that it is “one of the finest”.
We will again be among the finest concerning the sport of football in due time.
Get used to it.

True, I am not saying I personally believe these comments from Don Shula. They may or may nt be accurate, and Shula is biased on both levels since the coach left his pro team to replace his fired son. I do think it shows the desperation to get a top coach because the program is now mediocre and outside the money it is simply not a step up for any top coach.
As for the academics, check out this site:
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php
You will find Alabama, Auburn, and Tennessee leading the best of the rest in the SEC at tied for spots 88-97. The entire Big 10(11) is rated higher than this. 11 of the ACC is rated higher(only F$U is worse.) Vandy, UF, and UGA are the only ones rated higher in the SEC(UGA is the lowest of three tied for spots 60-63.) SC, the MS schools, and Ark didn’t even make the list of the top 126. I will say I didn’t even expect UA to be on the list, so I am surprised, but I wouldn’t exacty call it the Yale of the south.

I am willing to admit that the football program at Alabama has become mediocre. I knew after attending scrimmages last summer that this would be a tough year for the Crimson Tide football team. There was simply too much youth and inexperience for them to win in the SEC in 2006. All objective observers of college football knew that this would be a rebuilding year for Alabama. However, there is good redshirt talent in the wings and Bama is set for a comeback.
There certainly was a sense of desperation to hire a quality coach after the results of the last few coaching hires. These have not been good years for the Bama Nation.
I don’t believe that Mike Shula was the man to take Alabama back to where they wanted to be with the football program, but he was a good administrator and recruiter and the program is ready to take the next step.
Whether you love or hate Nick Saban, his record speaks for itself concerning his ability to win in Division I college football. He was the coach that Bama wanted and Tide fans are happy to see him come to the Capstone. I understand why fans of other SEC schools don’t share our enthusiasm for this event.

Saban is a very capable coach. I predict he will return UA back to their glory of the “middle of the pack” in the West. He will average about 8-9 wins per year (slightly more than the avg number of original teeth per Bama fan) and beat Aubarns twice in 5 years (if he’s there that long). All subjectivity aside, UGA has owned the SEC over the last 5 years in most every category…..and done it with a guy who is first class. Go Dawgs…Roll(over)Tide.

Look at his resume. He changes jobs on average every 4-years. Bama is his 3rd job in 3-years. It’s all about the money. He will have no loyalty and Bama fans are all about loyalty. Yes, he had success at LSU, but was this due more to the LSU program or his ability as a coach? LSU still has a strong program without him. He left a great program at LSU for the NFL. He did not give the NFL a chance. He bailed on LSU. He bailed on Miami. The SEC is the toughest conference in the NCAA. He needs to win 9 games this year including Auburn then improve on that each year or Bama fans will become restless again. We’ll see.

LOL!!!
It is truly hilarious to receive insults from a resident of an old penal colony that is home to the movie Deliverance! If it weren’t for the school of dentistry at UAB, Georgia would have more people than teeth! UGA doesn’t even rule the East division of the SEC, much less the entire conference.
As for the LSU program, they had eight losing seasons prior to Nick Saban’s arrival. The team and coaching staff that just humiliated Notre Dame was built by Saban. The MVP of that game is a young man from the state of Alabama who was recruited by Nick Saban.
The Crimson Tide is not a football program in need of rescue. They have been as good as UGA for the past two years in spite of the fact that they have endured the lowest ebb in their long and storied history with reduced scholarships and a HC that was getting on-the-job training.
Nick Saban will hit the ground running at Bama. We have paid pennance for the stupid mistakes made by a booster that was operating outside the control or influence of the UA administration. Mike Shula has returned character and integrity to the football program and leaves behind a very good group of talented players. Nick Saban will return the program to it’s rightful place as contenders for the SEC Championship.
Those who argue that Nick Saban came to Alabama for the money don’t seem to be able to calculate that a $250,000.00 per year pay cut is not a raise. Nick Saban came here to take advantage of a golden opportunity to compete for more NCAA National Championships.
You folks are welcome to hate us all you want. We don’t care, as long as we’re whipping your butts on the gridiron. We’ll see you guys in T-Town on 9-22-2008. I’m looking forward to it!

TrueCrimson, the guarantee is a raise over the long term. Saban could have been fired next year and had no income. I have no doubt he prefers the college game, but he did leave for more money because of the longevity of the contract. He’s not going to command anywhere near those kinds of dollars from any school not so deperate, especially if actually got fired from the pros.

BadgerDawg,
I haven’t posted on AJC’s blogs before, but I have noticed while browsing this blog that you are a master of trash talk. Still, all BS aside, you seem to be a reasonable person with above-average knowledge of the college football game.
You are correct - Saban’s long term contract at Bama is lucrative. I hope that he will stay here long enough to take advantage of that. If he doesn’t, he will still have a positive impact on the football program and we will simply hire another quality coach to replace him.
It is silly for people to complain that Alabama is paying top-dollar for one of the very best coaches available. Nick Saban would command this salary at any job that he elected to accept. His resume demands it. The Crimson Tide football program can easily afford his benefit package and it isn’t being ponied-up by the taxpayers of Alabama. The program generates over $60,000,000.00 per year in ticket sales, television and marketing revenues. Like all Southern states, we do suffer from pockets of poverty in Alabama. This has more to do with the Civil War and Reconstruction than with the people of the state. It takes a lot of hubris for the citizens of surrounding states that suffer with the same problems as we in Alabama do to hurl insults. I have friends and family throughout the Southeast and my chosen profession requires me to travel and work throughout the area. So I will advise all of you to avoid throwing stones when you live in glass houses.
The Bama Nation is pleased and proud to have Nick Saban coaching the Crimson Tide. We have our share of fruitcakes, as do all fan-bases, but most of us understand that Bear Bryant isn’t going to rise from the grave to lead the Tide back to it’s glory days of old. We simply want to compete in an honorable manner to excel in one of the very best college football conferences in the nation. Improvements in the Alabama football program will result in improvement of the SEC overall. We will expect results in short order, because the program is in good shape now. This season was marked by Bama being almost good enough to compete in the SEC. We should cross the line to good enough sooner, rather than later.
I would like to commend the UGA fans for resisting the temptation to call for the firing of your head coach after a disappointing season in 2006. I hope that we are able to exercise similar restraint when Saban has a down year at Bama. There is more parity in the SEC than there ever has been. I just hope that this sort of parity will finally occur in some of the other major conferences with which we have to compete.
I don’t want you guys to hate us for being Alabamians. But, as Nick Saban said in his press conference, I want you to hate to have to play the Crimson Tide football team.
Roll Tide!!!

Fire Mal Moore. He’s out of touch with reality. In the days of a level playing field, it takes more than a few years to build or restore a football program. I was incensed at the treatment Coach Curry was given, and all of their excuses. Firing Mike Shula and the way they did it was reprehensible. I have a little more understanding why coach Fran left. I thought he was bad, but Alabama probably got what they deserved. Shula had them going in the right direction and with integrity. For all of those who want to look back, yes there were national championships, and there were seasons with 5 losses all under Coach Bryant…nobody fired him for that. Expectations are too great these days and the line is getting blurred between the pros and college. I hope Saban does great at Alabama…Gene Stallings did…with Curry’s players. Stallings had a lifetime losing record until Alabama called. I’m a lifelong Bama fan, but I’ve lost respect for them. I’ve lived in Georgia for 50 out of my 56 years, and if you dawg fans think you are or have ever been at the level of the Tide, think again. The North Avenue Trade School has more championships than you. Yeah, that’s all past history, but y’all always bring it up, so maybe you should get your facts straight. In the meantime, GO JACKETS, ROLL TIDE
