The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With the AJC set to crown its 2006 Sports Person of the Year in Georgia, we want to know who you think should get the nod.
Consider:
Calvin Johnson, Georgia Tech’s consensus All-America wide receiver?
Kyle Carter and the Columbus Little League world champs?
Maya Moore, the UConn-bound Collins Hill basketball star who won the Naismith player of the year?
What about the Thrashers? Marian Hossa?
Clemson’s Ray Ray McElrathbey?
The Hawks’ Joe Johnson?
Bang out your thoughts and look for the winner in Saturday’s editions of the Journal-Constitution.

Maya Moore at Collins Hill High School. Maya represents what student ath. should be. Unselfish, good student and cares about her fellow team mates.

Roddy Jones, running back Chamblee H.S. 3.5 student, signed with Georgia Tech, he broke Patrick Pass’all-time rushing yards record for Dekalb County this year of over 5,000 yards. He always gave credit to his linemen for his success. Great runner and gentleman.

Kyle Carter, more heart and soul than 99% of the egotistical over-hyped overpaid pro guys; anyone but a Falcons or Braves player.

Joe Tereshinski III. Despite being injured and coming back to lose his starting job (after seemingly not being given a fair opportunity) he continued to contribute from the sidelines with a positive attitude.

Kyle Carter and the Columbus Little League Team without a doubt. No other athlete or group of athletes raised there game to international status. A sign entering the city of Columbus will forever commemorate their achievement.

Idiots,
I think the top athlete is Morten Anderson. He is the only athlete who has done his job superbly without any fanfare.

I deserve serious consideration. I hit several homeruns to propel my softball team to the league championship. I also scored several touchdowns for my flag football team, and played some mean tennis for my ALTA team. Where else will you find a multi-sport star like me?

KARI LET-NONE-IN!!!!!
He is one of the MAIN reasons, the heart and soul of the Thrashers, and he is the reason Atlanta has a winning team in this city. The Braves didn’t do it, the Falcons sure aren’t going to… we all know the Hawks story… Tech players are automatically disqualified because I’m a Dawgs fan, but we all know what happened this season… so… it only leaves one correct, logical answer… the man that is largely responsible for the Thrashers doing so well this year so far. Others can and will pick others, but there is NO doubt Kari is, by far, the only real choice here, hands down.
GO THRASHERS!!!

Kari Lehtonen of the Atlanta Thrashers. He has worked the hardest on the team and continues to contribute in crucial situations. He’s a great guy, too…very involved in the community. He’s the captain of the Atlanta Thrashers kids club. I vote for him.

Kari Lehtonen - head and shoulders above every athlete in Atlanta.
I can’t wait for the day that the rest of this city WAKES UP to see that they have a first place team playing night after night in the toughest sport in the world. Kari is so dedicated to his team and this city that he spent his entire off season in town working on his strength and conditioning so he could come in this year and DOMINATE the NHL.
Best part about Kari and the rest of the Thrashers? CLASSY does not even scratch the surface to describe these men and their dedication to this city and community. Do yourself a favor - support a team with HEART.

Marian Hossa should win this by a landside. He’s the most dynamic hockey player I’ve ever seen. When he’s on fire he is “Truly a site to behold!”.

The Thrashers are by far the best team in the ATL……..
Marian Hossa has to be the best pick in this category for ‘06
Yet any Thrasher deserves recognition…. I hope the rest of the city wakes up and visits the #1 team at their home….. Blueland…. And discover a whole new world…lol

As far as athletes go, the best ones in this city are by far on the Atlanta Thrashers. To just pick one is tough, but after some consideration, Marian Hossa gets my vote. The man is unbelievable.
Why do I have a feeling our opinions don’t count and a football player will get this award? Probably an academically inelligible one at that.

Marian Hossa….Thrashers are the best team Atlanta has going and he’s the cream of the crop. He says he’s glad to live here, where he can walk down the street unnoticed by fans, but ….let’s give him the attention he deserves!

There is only one person who desrves this and it is Kari Lethonen. Look at his play at the end of last year and now the first part of this season. Wake up Atlanta. This isn’t just a football town anymore!!!

Marian Hossa - and it’s not even close. No other Georgia athlete is as close to being the best in their sport as Hossa.
The Thrashers will do what the Braves, Falcons and Hawks cannot - bring playoffs to ATLANTA!
GO THRASHERS!!!!!!

I would have to choose Kari Lehtonen. Slava Kozlov would be a close second, but Kari deserves this honor more than any other Georgia athlete because of all he has done so far for the Thrashers and what he continues to do. I think he is the perfect candidate for the “top athlete of ‘06”. I vote Kari all the way! Go Blueland!!

Scott Melanby - Atlanta Thrashers Captain. Anyone who can lead this team the way he has, deserves to be top athlete. He is not only a leader, but he can play and mix it up too.
Any other Thrashers player follows him and then maybe a few players on some other sports teams around this football/baseball town. Hockey is far better than any other sport here.

1a. Marian Hossa. Watch this guy drive through traffic or down the end line to the net. The best. 1b. Kari Lehtonen Only needs consistent focus, Then he is complete. This guy sometimes wins games for the Thrash himself. Still very young. 1c. Ilya Kovalchuk A hard worker who is also still very young. A great, great shooter. 1d Slava Kozlav Wiley veteran who is capable of winning a game seven. 1e Bobby Holik His faceoff numbers of late are unreal.

Vote for Slava.
(Ryan, I like the way you think.)
When is Slava Kozlov gonna get some kind of true recognition for what he does???
I know we’re “not a hockey town” and all that stuff but anyone who follows sports NEEDS to know what an amazing athlete Slava is. Mentally and physically he’s the total package.
Watching how he develops plays on the ice and seeing him perform is worth the price of admission no matter what the outcome of the game is.
What a thrill he is to watch.

I live in Columbus and I know Kyle Carter and he is the kind of jerk you would expect a 12-year-old who knows he will be a millionaire first round MLB draft pick in 5 years to be; BUT, he is also the first kid in Little League history to win 4 World Series games. He also hit over 50 home runs this year. He’s got to be the Georgia Athlete of the Year.
