Friday’s recruiting roundup
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Hurricanes land star safety
New Miami coach Randy Shannon got an early Christmas present Friday night when North Miami Beach, Fla., defensive back Doug Wiggins announced he’d play for the Hurricanes. Wiggins, named this week to the AJC’s Super Southern 100, picked Miami Georgia, Miami and Michigan.
Chamblee star picks … Harvard
Chamblee senior Nicolai Schwarzkopf, one of the top-rated tight ends in Georgia, has committed to Harvard. The 6-5, 225-pounder had several Division I-A scholarship offers, including ones from Air Force, Kentucky, Navy, South Florida and UAB.
Newton: Sticking with Gators
Westlake quarterback Cameron Newton said Friday his commitment with Florida remains solid, despite news this week that John Brantley, a top-rated signal caller from Ocala, Fla., has backpedaled on his decision to sign with Texas and instead plans to become a Florida Gator. “When you’re talking about a powerhouse like the University of Florida, who wouldn’t want to be on the ship that plays for national championships?” Newton told the AJC’s Jeff Hood. “If I was in [Brantley’s] shoes, I’d do the same thing.” Florida is loaded at quarterback, with Tim Tebow just a freshman and three recruits set to join him: Newton, Brantley and Bryan Waggener of California’s Citrus Community College.
Tucker receiver to UK
Kentucky has landed its sixth Peach State prospect for the Class of 2007: Tucker receiver Anthony Mosley. The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder picked the Wildcats over Duke, East Carolina and North Carolina. “At UK, you consistently play against the best every week,” Mosley told Scout.com. “I want to be able to play around some of the best athletes and I want to be apart of turning around the program.”
Zook, Illini reel in star
Illinois continues to be the surprise team of the recruiting season, adding a second five-star prospect late Thursday: Chicago Simeon defensive end Martez Wilson. Rivals.com ranks Wilson as the nation’s No. 2 defensive end. He turned down scholarship offers from Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Southern Cal. Earlier, the Illini landed Rivals’ No. 2-ranked wide receiver: Arrelious Benn of Washington (D.C.) Dunbar.

I live in Florida and from all accounts I hear Wiggins is really high on Randy Shannon and will committ to Miami.

all recruiting is overrated. doesnt mean anything. a 5 star prospect can easily be a bust, 3 star prospect can easily be a super star, I can list hundreds of eaxmples, recent ones are Odell Thurman, Thomas Davis, David Green and David Pollak were all 3 stars prospects, however Brandon miller a 5 stars didnt live to the hype unless he turns things around next season.

Rivals had Calvin Johnson as a 4 star. What about his (6’4” 220 frame out of) High School made them think he only deserved 4 stars?

That’s because the rating services can’t measure what is in the heart. When you have a guy with a burning desire to play he will do what it takes to improve. Sometimes you have a guy with a world of natural ability but not the desire to go with it.

Recruiting overrated??? Let’s look at the teams who done well in recruting the past couple of years, USC, LSU, Texas, Ohio State, Florida, Georgia. These are the same teams who compete for conference and national titles year in and year out.

Any recruiting news on Allen Bailey? Is he leaning toward UGA? How about Morgan Burnett?

To say that all recruiting is overrated is not true at all. Sure, you can cite examples where guys either exceeded their ranking or played far below it, but overall, the teams that recruit the best (while finishing at the top of the recruiting rankings) are the same teams that WIN the most. And exhaustive studies paralleling recruiting to on-the-field results bears this out. All things being equal and more times than not, you give me a class full of 4 and 5 star guys and I will whip a team made up of 1 and 2 star ones.

I think that Doug Wiggins is a for sure Hurricane. He will make it official tonight. I don’t see us pulling him out of there with Miami rebuilding. He could probably step in and play right away. I think he would have probably already committed if he was coming to Athens. Hope I’m wrong. Somebody fill us in on Bailey, Heyward, and Burnett. I’m sure there’s an insider out there somewhere that can give us the scoop. We need to finish strong in recruiting. 2 more solid commits would be nice. GO DAWGS.

Look at what Spurrier is doing at South Carolina. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Gamecocks win the conference in 2007 or 2008.

I do not think recruiting is overrated its just fooball junkies like myself just need something to keep us occupied when football season is over. yes there are bust and players overrated but thats what makes it fun. to see a 3 star player like pollack go on to be an all american is a great story. yes more stars on your team means you will win more. cmr is the man and he has had a lot of stars latley

What do you mean what Spurrier is doing? Going 7-5 in back to back years? Big friggin deal.
The Chickens will never be better than 3rd in the East, Spurrier or no Spurrier.

every team you listed has played for the national title in the last 12 years EXCEPT UGA.
It’s been over 20 years since UGA has competed for a National Title.
The Gators will have played for the National title THREE times in the last eleven years and will have played for the National title in the 3 major sports in just the last year and half alone.

Brantley is the man. He is awesome. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him overtake Tebow after a year or so. UF is outright sick when it comes to recruiting.

Matt, in all due respect,LSU, SC, and Texas have won National Championships last 4 years,, with Florida and Ohio State playing for title next month. The only results UGA has got out of its high recruiting rating is 2 SEC titles. This year was a 8-4, season, almost more loses than all total for Florida,SC, LSU, Ohio State and Michigan combined. Now, after all the 4-5 stars last 4 years, CMR is recruited JUCO players for immediate play? Auburn is no where near UGA recruiting standards last 3 years, but is behind only Southern Cal and Texas with most win pct. 32-6, with one SEC title, plus 13-0 season in 2004.I am a UGA fan except against Auburn, which UGA thrashed us this year, but results are not there compared to other top recruiting schools and UGA. Where did all the recruits go, especially WR? Good luck against Va Tech, it will be a tough game for both teams.

tim, I hope you’re right but, but so far he’s doing exactly what he said he wuld he would do. He’s going to have a very good backfield and a beefed up “OL”. I wouldn’t count him out. But what’s the Dawgs doing? You talk about egg on your face, this deal with the JUCO kid is right out of a “Key Stone Cops” thriller. We very much need a couple of the in state stars to stay home for this to be a great year. We only played 6 or 7 true freshman and put 18 on the taxi squad and if you don’t think those numbers are being used to recruit against us, please think again. The days are gone when talented young men want to waste a yr. waiting and Universities across the country are playing more true freshman than ever, It’s a coming trend that’s here.

War Eagle, there’s something that’s not working right, I just don’t know what. I’m more than a little concerned about Va. Tech. I do hope we can pick up a few good players at the end.

UFrowns,
You backed into 1 NC and had your backside handed to you in the oter NC game by big Red. Do you remeber the embaressment of that butt kicking? Yes you own my Dawgs over the past 12 yrs. But be a little more humble. UGA could have played for the NC not so long ago (2002) But two undefeated teams stood in the way. You are lucky that is not the case again. Grow some stones and beat Ohio State. This is the Gayturds chance to win a NC with out any doubt coming into play !!!!

It’s still a long way to signing day, but it’s possible that four of the top ten recruiting classes in the country may wind up in the SEC East (Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina), with a couple more in the West (LSU and Auburn). If Meyer, Richt, Fulmer and Spurrier can sustain these recruiting trends over the next several years, there is going to be some remarkable football college football played in the Southeast over the next 3 to 5 years … . Anyone who can emerge from the East undefeated or even with one loss is going to be in the hunt.
Signing off——Merry Christmas to all you blog-Dawgs, Gators, Vols, Cocks and Tigers. Try to play nice while I’m gone. Ho, ho, ho.

I managed high school baseball for several years at an inner city school in Memphis. With the right coaches, and kids who want to excel, champions they will be; we won three championships. It was hard, but I loved it. I’m a white guy who managed at black schools where very few kids play baseball. None of these kids would be recruited to D1 schools, but as a team(s), they accomplished great things.
I’m a twice UGA graduate, and the fact is Coach Richt is a very good man and coach, and I want him to stay, but we’ll never compete for anything beyond the SEC title because of his too conservative style. Rodney Garner should have been named DC over Coach Martinez, but Richt is too stubborn to change his ways. No matter that he named Bobo as OC, if he’s calling the same plays with the same rotations, to expect difrferent results is nuts.
Go Dawgs

Isn’t it wonderful how the Bulldawg nation slowly evolves into another Alabama group. They believe every person they recruit will come to Georgia, and if they don’t the nation start a smear campaign about their talent, heart, etc. A few good seasons, and suddenly you’re USC, OSU, or Texas.
