If you ran FSN South & SportSouth…

If you were Jeff Genthner’s boss at FSN South and SportSouth (read his profile), what direction would you want him to take the two Fox sports networks?

Bring back the old Braves announcers’ team? Put a heavy focus on college sports? Something else?

FIRE BOB RATHBURN, RATHMON OR WHATEVER HIS NAME IS. THAT GUY IS ABSOLUTELY PAINFUL. HE IS UNLISTENABLE. ACTUALLY, I JUST TURN OFF EVERY HAWKS GAME AND BRAVES GAMES HE ANNOUNCES HE IS SO AWFUL.

TURN THE CHANNEL INTO A NONSTOP NASCAR, COLLEGE SPORTS, BRAVES, HAWKS, THRASHERS, AND FALCONS COVERAGE. TREAT IT LIKE IT TRULY IS THE ESPN AND ESPN2 FOR THE SOUTHERN SPORTS FAN. IF IT WAS DONE RIGHT - NO ONE WOULD REALLY WATCH SPORTCENTER OR BASEBALL TONIGHT OR ANY OF THOSE ESPN SHOWS ANYMORE. THE REALITY IS THAT WE ALL SIT THROUGH IT SO THAT WE CAN CATCH CLIPS OF OUR TEAMS. NONE OF US CARE REALLY ABOUT THE REST OF THE COUNTRY. SO STOP WASTING OUR TIME. GO HARD CORE WITH FSN SOUTH AND SPORTSOUTH WITH ALL THINGS SOUTHERN - BRAVES, NFC SOUTH, SEC, ACC, THRASHERS, HAWKS, NASCAR, FALCONS & NFC SOUTH - IF THEY FOCUSED ON THAT THEY WOULD KILL IN THE RATINGS.

BUT FIRE BOB RATHWHATEVER SO THAT I NO LONGER AM SUBJECTED TO LISTENING TO IT. HE MAKES LISTENING TO A BRAVES GAME OR HAWKS GAME FEEL LIKE YOU ARE WATCHING A HIGH SCHOOL GAME ON CABLE ACCESS. HELL, HE IS EVER WORSE THAN MATT STEWART WHO IS ABSOLUTLEY PAINFUL TO WATCH AND LISTEN TO.

AND BRING THE BROADCAST QUALITY - PICTURE, COLOR, SHARPNESS - OF THE BRAVES TELECAST UP TO THE LEVELS OF THE TBS BROADCASTS. YOUR BROADCASTS LOOK LIKE AMATEUR HOUR COMPARED TO THE TBS BROADCAST. FAIR OR NOT, WE HAVE BECOME SPOILED BY THE ANNOUNCERS AND THE QUALITY OF THE PICTURE AND THE BROADCAST THAT IT IS VERY HARD TO WATCH YOU PUT OUT A SUBPAR PICTURE AND LISTENING EXPERIENCE. IT ACTUALLY TURNS ME AWAY FROM THE GAME - WHICH IS VERY HARD TO DO - I JUST GO ABOUT MY BUSINESS AND LISTEN TO THEGUYS ON THE RADIO WHEN THE GAMES ARE PLAYED ON FSN AND SPORTSSOUTH

First of all put them both in HD. The current broadcast quality is outdated and looks terrible. Second, get rid of Bob Rathbun. No offense to him as he seems to be a professional but I think we need a fresh voice. Someone a little younger perhaps.

We need Thrashers and Hawks games in HD. When this happens, I will BEGIN to watch them on TV. Until then, I will either not watch them on TV or be present at the arena, but FSN South and SportSouth will not be getting any of my viewership until baseball season and Braves HD coverage returns.

Please bring in some new faces & voices. Chip and Joe Simpson, preferably. Not another year of Jeff Torborg. He managed like he broadcastzzzzzz. And he went all year with one white shirt and that gold tie. I know I watch too much. Rathbun’s gotta go too.

broadcast the hawks and thrashers in HD!!! i don’t care who is doing the analysis or play-by-play, just give me a well produced HD telecast and i’m happy. you don’t even need to have an analyst if you broadcast it in HD. so, to summarize, broadcast the frickin’ games in HD!!!!!

I found Torborg insightful, and a huge improvement over the inane patter of the Paciorek-Rathbun duo.

For play-by-play I’d enjoy any of the old TBS voices but Sutton and the Careys would probably be too costly as compared with Rathbun. Maybe Van Wieren or Simpson?

Better yet, if he’s willing to leave New York bring in Warner Fusselle, the best baseball voice to come out of the south since his old TWIB colleague Mel Allen.

I can’t disagree with anything anyone has said with the exception of the d-bag GAYTOR guy. But he even has a valued point about showing all of the southern sports. Show ACC and SEC games. Do like espn classic and show old college games. Show old Braves games go back futher then the 90’s so us Atlanta fans can know what to expect for years to come. Show minor league games. I mean not much of a Nascar fan in fact could probably paint numbers on my ceiling fan and turn that sob on and get the same thing. But show old school nascar. Do not show the best darn sports show or whatever that garbage is. And the over all thing I would do is get rid of Bob Rathburn. DO not replace him with Mark Lemke. Leave Ronnie Gant. And bring in another old time braves guy. But not someone who is going to be a homer for braves office or scared to tell it like it is.

You all need to worry about something else- they’re all enjoyable in their own ways.

I’m with the majority on Bob Rathbun. He treats every assignment as it is an ACC basketball game. Torborg needs to be reassigned. I wouldn’t object to Don Sutton doing Braves games because you learn something and he doesn’t act like a know-it-all. Also he has done play-by-play. I would hope that they would not hire some “voice” guy for games. As for the Hawks, I wouldn’t mind if the Zone broadcast with Steve Holman as a simulcast. If all else fails on the Braves front, work something out that lets Joe and/or Pete do some games.

I just hate how the big bad wolf that is Fox came in and eliminated the Braves announcers. They are our guys. They are just as much a part of the team as Bobby Cox and Chipper Jones. It was just wrong. I’m still mad about it. I just can’t listen to the guys they hired at Fox. I turn the sound down and listen to the Braves radio network.

Last summer when the Braves where on Turner South, I would mute the tv and put on the radio. Those guys just don’t do it for me and I am not alone. Fox needs to bring in Don, and/or somehow just use some of the TBS crew. The only person I like on Fox is Ron Gant.

By Jeremy

Don Sutton was the best color analyst we had - you can’t replace the insights of a hall of fame pitcher. Rathbun, Torberg, Gant, they all are awful to listen to. The really come across as amateur sports announcers. I grew up on Pete, Joe, Skip, and Don. Now that I won’t get Don on the TBS, maybe I’d be happy once again if Fox was smart enough to hire him. Braves fans won’t listen to those other guys, we wan’t the great announcers we’ve listened to the last 20 plus years. I’m glad I’m not alone in feeling this. I think everybody wants Don hired at Fox - it gives them credibility.

Dear Georgians, Talk About This! It makes my heart happy that people have are responding to my web site www.kllundypublishingllc.com and have sent me letters from around the world concerning the injustice that has befallen my family and me at the hands of law enforcement and public officials of Dekalb County, Decatur, Georgia. I can only print one of many letters. The letter below is from a lady by the name of Kelley.

“Hello I just came upon your website today. Unfortunately it isn’t altogether shocking after I have heard the recent news of police shootings and corruption in that county. I used to research and read to discover the hidden key to get justice. There doesn’t seem to be an bold face answer to that. So in the last couple years I have taken a new approach. I research what has failed and see WHY it failed. Sometimes this helps. Attempts in County Superior Courts cost so much time, money and emotional/mental anguish for people like Mr. Lynch. My question is this, has there been any attempt or filings in the federal district court of Georgia for either Mr. Lynch’s criminal case or the juvenile case for his children? It seem like such a slow and impossible task to try to give our god given constitutional rights handed back to us through the use of federal civil rights filings but at least in that, I have been able to still try to hold onto some hope for justice and the end of torture to our families. Thank you for your time and my sincerest prayers for him and his family and his children.”

Hire Don Sutton! He’s a great guy whose comments are almost always quite insightful, and, even though he’s a Hall of Famer, he never beats you over the head with stuff like, “When I was pitching back in the ’70s….”

Plus, he’s got the best man-perm in all of baseball.

By Scott

December 11, 2006 07:49 PM | Link to this

Bring on Don Sutton and… David Justice. There are a hundred reasons that Don Sutton is perfect for this job. I’d rather hear him call a game by himself than Rathbun and Torborg, Paciorek, Downing….. He does the analyst and play-by-play equally as well. Could you even imagine Torborg doing play-by-play. Don Sutton knows the Braves, is great at what he does, and would be the best hire that the station could possibly make.

Now, why David Justice? Well, I remember listening to him call ESPN playoff games a few years ago and he was surprisingly very, very good. He was able to give the listener insight into each batter’s thinking process, pitch-by-pitch, without repeating himself like Ron “as I said earlier” Gant. Also, he is still young enough that most Brave fans still remember him and still connect to him.

Of course, both guys would have to want the jobs, but that’s what I would do if I were running the show.

Now if we could just somehow get rid of Chip Cary……

I’ll tell you what is going to happen in Atlanta in less than 5 years. You all are going to be subscribing to MLB to watch the Braves. I am in South Florida and am amazed at the way they are chopping (no pun intended) away at the games being broadcast. First no Turner South, then no Fox Sports South, TBS reducing the number of games being broadcast every year and I found that I could only get about 50 games last year. You don’t know how good you have it up there in ATL. If you want to see bad broadcasting of games, come down to Miami and watch the Marlins TV network. I guess only Dave O’Brien could appreciate the worst homerun call in America as the Marlins announcer emotionlessly calls “UP, UP and AWAY” to the tempo of some inane rock group from the 60’s. Enjoy your great setup while you can ATL>

Sutton is a self-impressed, babbling, motor-mouth. His every cliché is repeated 162 times every year. I’d rather vote for Hillary than look at his poodled head, or listen to his moronic repetition.

Joe Simpson is the man. The best of the group. Unbowed, unpretentious, funny and verbally efficient.

Both Careys need to go. The older is just too far gone physically. He can’t see, and way past time for the pasture. That’s what happens when you trash your body, kids! The younger is what happens when nepotism goes bad (i.e. Joe Buck).

Van Weiren is good enough to keep. Scrap the “diamond notes” though.

Ron Gant or Mark Lemke? I’ll jump off a building before I’ll listen to these Grade A, supercharged, boring-machines. On second thought if I need a nap…

Torborg is all right. Lots of experience with the managing, and he did catch Koufax’s perfect game (got to love Koufax).

Rathburn isn’t horrible, but not great. I could go either way on him.

All in all, I’d just be happy if Sutton when away. Forever.

rathburn is terrible, terrible, terrible. i feel bad trashing a guy like this because i am sure he is a decent dude but he is painful. it is like watching a game with your creepy uncle who is so queer and corny, it drives you out of your mind. how is anyone on here saying that he is okay? are you all drunk when you watch the games rathburn is announcing?

as bad as torborg is, he is nowhere near as bad as paciorek. now that guy was absolutely ….. i don’t even know what the word was to describe Tom P. the funny thing is that he actually has a job with the nationals i think now. I am not a big fan of people from the D.C. area but i sure as hell would not wish Tom P. on any fan base. It is almost embarrassing to send him off to another fan base. You know fans of the Nationals must have heard that he was a former Braves announcer and figured he must have been good because all Braves announcers have pretty good reps. AND then they hear him talk, scream, cry, yelp, screech and say yeah! yeah! yeah! six thousand times and they all must think we are a bunch of yahoos who like listening to that kind of broadcast. embarrassing! as much as i hate listening to Tom P., I wish he had stayed here so that he would not go around the country telling people he is a former braves announcer. That is just so embarrasing for us as braves fans.

Time for some new blood. Pete Van Wieren and Joe Simpson are okay, but I’ve had enough of the Careys and the loss of Sutton is long overdue. He was okay as an analyst but his play-by-play is about as hard to follow as the overrated legend Larry Munson. The best play-by-play guy in the market is Wes Durham. Between Tech and Falcons, he’s probably got enough on his plate, but money talks. Personally, when the Braves are on the road I catch ‘em on XM and get to hear some of the best ever, like Milo Hamilton and Vin Scully.

Don Sutton has improved so much in the last 15 years that he has become one of the very best baseball analysts out there. He delivers knowledge to the casual fan from a player’s perspective without sounding like a know-it-all (i.e., Tim McCarver or Joe Morgan). Plus, his play-by-play delivery has improved 500%. And he’s a heck of a nice guy to boot.

I agree w/ most others on here about Rathbun - he makes every game sound like an ACC basketball game. Torborg was better than Paciorek, but still a rather deadpan delivery. If SportSouth could bring in another of the Braves’ announcers along w/ Sutton, that would be even better.

Improve the technical quality of the game broadcasts, broadcast them in HD, keep the focus very regional, get rid of Rathbun, and BRING IN SUTTON!

More coverage involving the Thrashers! SportSouth treats the Thrashers like a disease; no pre-game (or post-game) show. Like TurnerSouth couldn’t wait for the game to be over to show a cooking (or home redecorating) show, SportSouth can’t wait to show a poker tournament (or, even worse, a 30-minute interview involving a college football coach). SportSouth (and FSN for that matter) need to build a night around the team playing that night. Also, FIRE BOB RATHBUN!!! I swear the guy sounds like a game-show host. Furthermore, change the music and graphics on both FSN South and Turner South; make it look and sound different from all the other FSNs.

Sutton by himself is better than the previous 2 regimes. Can you get someone like Brad Nessler? As a Braves fan since 1952, I strongly urge you to hire someone with a good grasp of Braves history and a great voice. Remember the days of Milo Hamilton and Larry Munson. Give us a duo in that catagory! Why can’t Don, Pete, Chip, Skip and Joe do your broadcasts also. I feel that they should be allowed to do all the TV broadcasts of the Braves regardless of the network. Come on and show some baseball savy because it is apparent that Time Warner doesn’t have any. So show your prowess, and get with it on the telecasts.

The current fox sports guys calling the braves games are really bad. I actually put the tv on mute and turn on the radio so I can listen to the braves radio broadcast with guys that actually know how to call a game! I really hope that baseball and figure something out inthe future to make every team have a certain set of broadcasters and make the networks play those guys, because, frankly, my teams broadcasters are as much a part of my viewing experience as the team itself.

I like to think of Virginia as being in the South. But apparently it is not, since we don’t get either of those channels. We do get TBS, but as others have pointed out, Braves games are precious few anymore on that network. (I guess Sex in the City reruns are more popular. Not to me!) And to add insult to injury, any time the Braves play the Washington Nationals, the game is blacked out in Richmond! TBS goes dark for a couple of hours. Some kind of territorial squabble with the Orioles owner.

So forget about who is announcing… I’d be happy to be able to see the game with NO announcers!

I have been watching braves telecasts since the 70’s. Simpson and Sutton are first on my list as they are entertaining and easy to listen to. Chip Carey is neither and not even on my list as he is neither entertaining or easy t listen to. Keep him on radio only! Skip and Pete would be next inline as they have been there forever and Skip has picked it back up after a couple of years of losing it. I have always liked Pete.

Why bring Don Sutton back? I think improving the broadcasts will be a much better move. Scrape your fingernails down a blackboard, if you must, but don’t rehire Sutton, on a scale of 1 through 10, with 10 being highest, he would have to jump up to touch bottom. Besides, with his enormous ego, there isn’t room in the booth for anyone else.

For “Steve in Virginia”, you hit the nail on the head, Virginia isn’t “the South”. Years ago, I lived, for 3 years, in Norfolk, and never, in that time, was I able to find grits in a grocery store. I had to have family members mail grits to me. Without grits, there is no chance of being part of the South.

If you have a chance at Don Sutton and don’t take it, what a mistake that would be. He is so passionate abbout the game and doesn’t toot his horn like that droll Jeff Torborg….boy was he boring.

Sutton, Simpson, Carey, even Mark Lemke has creds…

Please do NOT bring Don Sutton back. I was so looking forward to not having to suffer through another year with him! He knows a lot about baseball, but is terrible at announcing games. The other braves announcers- fine, but no Sutton.

Bob Rathburn is good for basketball but not very good doing baseball. Jeff Torborg is insightful but his deliivery is tedious. If this is ‘our team, out south, our sports’ lets remember there is nothing wrong hiring a ‘homer’. Mr Rathburn got too enthusiastic when an opponent went ahead in the game.

After reading the bio, I now understand the decisions being made about broadcasters. He may like Atl but he doesn’t KNOW Atl. Don Sutton brings class, character, dignity and genuinely cares about the fan. We’re losing the class in today’s sports. It isn’t about content, and the game, but the “personality”. We’re not NY or Chicago, we’re ATL and we like it that way. We don’t have to follow, we lead. We don’t get all the press of those cities, but we were winners for a very long time…..quietly doing it our way. Pay attention to what worked.

Sport South (formally Turner South) has been lousy, particularly in the AM time. Bring back “Rick and Bubba” in the 6-9 AM time slot, and be much more interesting. Both coach little league teams, talk about sports a lot on their show, and have sport guests from time to time, so you would not be getting away from your sports formant, and you’d be a lot mre entertaining.

Why is it when on a night both the Hawks and Thrashers are playing, we only see one of them? Even worse, FSN South decides to show poker AND “Best Damn Sports”! When FSN South was originally created (as SportSouth), it was created for ATLANTA teams. Now that we have two regional FSN channels (why Turner South wasn’t renamed FSN Atlanta, I don’t know), the Hawks could’ve been put on FSN South, with the Thrashers put on SportSouth…Is this too easy to consider, or what?
