Gators get title shot

Florida (12-1) jumped over Michigan into the No. 2 spot in Sunday’s new BCS Standings. The Gators will play No. 1 Ohio State for the national championship on Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.

Are you glad the Gators are No. 2? Do they deserve the opportunity to play for the title? Or does Michigan deserve the chance more?

Lastly, who do you think will win the Florida-Ohio State game? What final score do you predict? Would Michigan-Ohio State have been a better game?

GATORS DO NOT DESERVE TO BE IN THE FINALS!!!! They played uga, vanderbilt, south carolina, and another florida team all within 7 points. They also lost to Auburn ranked 11th (I think) and lost by 10 points. Michigan’s only lost was to the number 1 team and they lost by 3 points compared to 10 points.

first of all let it be known that i bleed red and black. that being said, i believe the choice made is endorsed by the fact that the reptiles ARE the SEC champs!; michigan came in 2nd in there comference. also, i believe the people(voters included) think it will be a fresh game and not a rematch. the lizard faithful will also travel well. now, this dawg has voiced his opinion. i do however refrain from comments regarding who i will be pulling(not cheering) for. ha!

Joseph, The whole system sucks, but Florida deserved it. Harder schedule, 10 bowl opponents, 8 teams with winning records, much better conference. Michigan already lost to Ohio State. Michigan did not win their conference which AT LEAST this year is clearly inferior. This was a no brainer.

Michigan had their chance Joseph. They blew it. Florida’s schedule was 10 times harder then Michigan’s. Michigan beat a way overrated ND team and lost to OSU. Go DAWGS in the Peach and go SEC against OSU.

Urban Meyer lobbied for his team to get voted into the championship while Lloyd Carr remained silent. We live in a media driven world and Urban Meyer just taught Coach Carr a marketing lesson. The system might get changed in the future but Florida still gets to play for the championship this year.

Yep, they deserve. You should have to win your conference to go, when will they learn. The ones who really got screwed were Wisconsin and Auburn… by……Boise State Figure that one, and it is pretty cool that the ACC Number 2 is paired as an even match for the SEC No 5

Joseph, you’ve got to be kidding. I’m an ACC guy but definately believe the Gators deserve to be in the championship game. What a conference you have to survive in with the SEC and then to win the conference championship. Then you have to look at the fact that Michigan already has had their shot at Ohio State. Granted, it was a great game but there’s no way you can deny Florida their chance after the year they have had. I believe it is due anyway from the BCS folks after the Auburn fiasco two years ago. I’m a Georgia Tech fan but I say GO GATORS! Hell, I say go ANYBODY, as long as Reggie Ball ain’t playin. Do I think the Gators will win? No. But, I’ll be pulling for them. Prediction: Ohio State - 35, Gators - 21

Too bad the refs will probably throw the game in OSU’s favor, much like they did in 2002 at the fiesta bowl (miami vs. osu). the refs totally chocked at the end when they made up a pass intereference call against miami. sketchy, especially considering they failed to throw the flag when osu actually did commit such a foul against miami. miami was robbed.

This will be a different version of Nebraska-UF from the Lawrence Phillips days with 6 Gators missing the tackle. OSU will win by at least 3 TDs and all TV sets will be turned onto Survivor by halftime. UF played a tough schedule and only had one loss, but there is no way they are the 2nd(or 3rd or 4th or 5th) best team in the country. LSU is the best team in the SEC, both OSU and Mich are better, USC is better. I’d love to see them play Boise St or Wisconsin, I think both of them could beat them too. I don’t care what happened last night, I’d say Ark is better too, McFadden out and moron punt returner killed them. I think therer are two questions: have they earned it? arguably yes. Are they the 2nd best team(or even in the top 5)? HELL NO!

For those of us who are true fans of the SEC, FL going to the BCS bowl will only pay dividends for our conference in the end. A National Championship win validates what the pollsters already know…the SEC is the superior conference in college football. Think about this…If the teams in the Big 12, Big 10 or PAC 10 are so great, who are they and where have they been ALL season?? Can anyone name more than 3 top ranked team in EACH conference by memory?

I’ve heard both sides and it’s a really close call as to whether Fla deserves it over Mich. I’m pulling for the SEC, it just happens to be Fla thats representing us. Now its up to Fla to show why the SEC deserves the consideration we always get screwed out of. If Fla can win the game or at least make a game out of it, the dividends could help the SEC in future debate, but if Fla gets trounced ( like they probably will) it will hurt the SEC in the future. I certainly beleive the SEC is the toughest conference, I’m just not sold on Fla being able to show that to everyone that don’t know it. As bad as I hate the Gators, I sure hope they win it and show the world that the SEC is boss. Unfortunately my prediction is OSU 42 UF 13.

As a die-hard Dawg fan, I can’t stand the thought of the jean short wearin’, mullett-haired classless fans that are Florida fans being able to taunt us with national championships in basketball and football.

However, as between Florida and Michigan, Florida deserves to play in the National Title game.

You can’t play for the National Championship if you can’t even win your own conference, especially when the conference has only three quality teams.

If you are going to make the style points argument, you might want to watch some tape of the UM/Ball State game.

Lastly, to everyone who says that UM/Ohio State game was a “field goal game.” Give me a break, in the second half Ohio State never trailed and were in complete control of the game at all times. Those same people are the ones who say that Florida “got taken to the woodshed” at Auburn, when that game truly was a field goal game except for the pick six on the last play.

Again, I hate Florida and will probably not even be able to watch the game due to this fact, but Michigan stop crying, you had your chance.

Florida very deserving of shot at OSU. They had the hardest schedule in the NCAA, they had one more win than Michigan, their only loss came on a contoversial play, and they won their conference.

Urban Meyer comes to Florida and gets them to the title game in his 2nd year. Richt has done well at UGA but has not sniffed a National title and probably never will. UGA fans should adjust their expectation level accordingly.

Predictions:

OSU 34 UF 24 VT 28 UGA 13 WV 42 GT 3

It came down to the whole southeast boycotting the game if it had been a rematch. I would not have watched it, I only flipped back and forth when they played the first time. If you play only a couple of ranked teams you should not compare to southeastern conference teams. By the way, I am a Tennessee fan and the most talented/best team we played all year was LSU. Absolutley the Gators deserve it! I agree we need a playoff, but: 1) We won our conference Championship, the toughest in America! 2) We had the toughest schedule in the country. 3) We were 9-1 against bowl teams

Florida deserves to play Ohio state for the NC, good luck to the gators and hope they bring back the NCAA title to the SEC. the big joke of this BCS is Notre Dame, they have not beat a top 25 team in 2 years, they got slaughtered by SC and Michigan yet play in a BCS Sugar Bowl. Auburn beat LSU #4 florida #2 and is proud to play Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl. but the truth is, if we had won against UGA, probably we would play Ohio State. UGA played well against Auburn and deserves alot of credit for their rebound, good luck in the ChickFilat Bowl. My point is Notre Dame is nutured by the news media and they kiss their butts every chance they get to move their agenda.lets pull hard for LSU to sent them back to South Bend with pain from the SEC. We can argue all day about Michigan or Florida, but the real point is that they both deserve it! You can talk about Florida’s tougher schedule, or Michigan’s dominance of their opponents, etc. but their is no fair way to argue in favor of either. Or you could ask Bobby Johnson, who played them both, who he thinks is better.

If you are a pureist, then you want the best 2 teams in the country playing against each other. In my opinion, that is OSU and UM.

It really does not matter though. All this BCS drama creates such a buzz around college football, which is what the anti-playoff folks (presidents, commisioners, etc.) want anyway. (more $$$)

The only way to crown a pure national champion is through a playoff. Until then, I guess we will all post our opinions on who got screwed on blogs like this every year.

I would rather see OSU play Florida instead of Michigan. OSU probably doesn’t want to see Michigan again either.

I did get tired of the Florida whining. Urban Meyer was crying about a playoff a couple weeks ago, now that he is in the NC game, he doesn’t want to comment. at least a 4 or 8 team playoff is needed though.

The bowl system is weird and something I never hear much in these parts. The “home team” bowls. Georgia plays in lot in Atlanta. USC in L.A. and I believe this year LSU in New Orleans.

THEY DO NOT DESERVE TO GO TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. IT IS STUPID TO PUT A TEAM THAT LOST TO A SO SO TEAM ABOVE A TEAM THAT THE ONLY GAME THEY LOST WAS TO THE #1. IT SHOULD BE THE #1 TEAM OHIO STATE AND THE TRUE #2 TEAM MICHIGAN TO PLAY IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

By gator haters

michigan does not deserve it. you have to win your conference championship. that is the bottom line to me. if you do not win the conference championship, you do not deserve to play in the national championship. michigan plays in a weak conference and had a weak schedule. michigan did not win their conference championship. they had their chance. they lost. although ESPN keeps trying to hype that game as a great game, it was not a great game. michigan was never truly in that game. they were always down by ten or so points and only scored a cheap meaningless touchdown at the end. besides if michigan lost to ohio state in november but then beat ohio state in january, how could michigan truly lay claim to the national championship.

Florida deserves to be there and they will win the game. The outcome will be the opposite of what happened in that classic Ohio State/Miami game. Florida played in the toughest conference with the toughest comp. you can not breathe in the SEC for one week. otherwise a vandy can jump up and be a van gundy around your mourning tree trunk legs.

I really hate Florida and I really hate Urban Meyer even more than I hate Florida. Even more than I hate Florida and Urban, I hate Spurrier and every gator that ever played. BUT they are the ones who deserved to be there. Not Michigan

So let me get this straight, Michigan doesn’t play for two weeks and they get jumped over twice ( once by USC and UF) There are 3 games of SEC v Big 10. Most likely it will be split going into the title game. Florida has been lucky all year long, OSU can spread them 5 across, or line up in double TE and pound it down their throat. OSU will win this by 17 and it won’t be close. OSU has a better special teams, better D and a more balanced offense. Just watch and then all you people who think the SEC is better than the BIG10 will cry and see the BIG 1O celebrate.

1) We need a play-off. There is no excuse for this non-sense. Division 2 and 3 schools have them and so should Div. 1. If these coaches would complain about it rather that give lame a*******ed answers when asked about it, it would happen. We the fans should raise our voices and make this happen. The fans deserve it and more importantly so do the kids who play this great game. 2)Florida should go because they are a 1 loss team with a stronger schedule. 3)A rematch between UM and OSU would only cause more problems. Why? If UM won, how would they be National Champs? Each team would have beaten the other once. Thus we would have to be a tie or need a third game for a best of three.

Bottom line is that the BCC is terrible and so was the old system. A playoff is the only way for us to know who the best team is. Start with 8 teams playing at various big bowl sites. The next week, hold the semi’s at the #2 and #3 highest value bowl and have the final at the #1 value bowl. The venues of the playoff’s and the championship game could rotate anuually like they do now. It would be a huge revenue generator and will answer the questions for once and for all. Most importantly it would give the kids a chance to prove the matter in the one place that counts; the field.

Once again we have the NCAA football politics. Florida has no business being in the championship game. This BCS is BS. UF has always been the beneficiary of a popularity contest. Same as ND. If either team has a good record against a tough schedule it is automatic. The Gators got their rematch vs. FSU in ‘95 when everyone nationwide (outside of Florida) protested against it. Ever since their last SEC title they have received a higher preseason ranking than their final rank.

How can an undefeated Auburn team who was DOMINANT in the SEC in ‘04 get left out when a 1-loss UF team that was ANYTHING but dominant backpeddle their way in?

As soon as Ohio St. crushes the Gators in Arizona, and yes, I hope to God it happens, it’ll probably be several years before we get a worthy team back in. That is, of course, unless it is a team that is popular with the media and has a coach who openly weeps on national TV. Do I hear a piano?

I am not sure Florida is the one to play for the NC…with that said I have read on this blog that Michigan should be playing…they did on Nov 18th and they lost get over and move on. You had a great season now shut your mouth and look forward to the Rose Bowl. Which you actually should not be playing that because that is reserved for the pac-10/big-10 champions and seeing as you lost to osu…but that is another story in itself. Now as far as #1gator fan goes since when is UGA and those sister lovin hillbilles in tennessee considered weak? If not for the bs personal foul that was called on QMo UGA would have driven down the field to tie UF and in overtime who knows what would have happened. And didn’t the sister lovin hillbilles come close to beating you? ANd the 1 loss you suffered came against an Auburn team that lost to UGA? SHut your mouth because UGA and sister lovin hillbilles are the reason you are in the game. Its called strength of schedule. Get your shot at the NC title while you can because your about to go back to being the second best team in the SEC east as you have been the last 6 years. OSU win big and expose’s Urban Meyer. But,now that you mention it, the Gators will kick Buckeye butt. The SEC is a real conference — unlike the ACC, whose championship game was playing without touchdowns or fans!!! that’s got to be a first — yeah! That’s the ticket! The first Maggot Bowl!

Saying Florida lost to Auburn by 10 is misleading. They really lost by 4…Auburn took a desperation fumble back for a TD on the last play.

As a Dawg fan, nothing pains me more than to see the Gay-tors in the national championship, but at the same time it’s good to have an SEC team in there for once.

I think UF has a better shot than most think. They haven’t won with style, but they’ve gone 12-1 and you can’t argue with that. I think their defense is better than Michigan’s, so if Leak doesn’t choke they’ll give OSU all they can handle.

For all the SEC homers, the Big 10 is just as good year in and year out as the SEC, so saying OSU or Michigan would lose 2 games in the SEC is not a fair statement. The logic that Michigan “blew their chance” is completely absurd as well. Losing to the #1 team on the road by just 3 points is the opposite of blowing it. They proved they deserved to play that OSU team at a neutral site. Also, the fact that Michigan isn’t a conference champion holds no weight here either. It is possible the two best teams in the country are in the same conference, and that that conference is not the SEC.

MICHIGAN, WIN YOUR DAMN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE YOU START CRYING ABOUT PLAYING IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!

WHAT DOES IT MATTER ANYWAY? IF MICHIGAN WENT, THEY WOULD HAVE LOST BECAUSE MICHIGAN NEVER WINS ANYTHING SUBSTANTIAL. ALL TIME WINNINGEST TEAM AND NO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. 1997 DID NOT COUNT. THAT WAS A KISSASS LITTLE AWARD THE SPORTSWRITERS HANDED TO YOU THAT YEAR JUST LIKE THEY HANDED THE HEISMAN TO YOUR LITTLE CORNERBACK THAT YEAR INSTEAD OF GIVING IT TO PEYTON WHO DESERVED IT THAT YEAR.

FLORIDA IS A CONFERENCE CHAMPION. MICHIGAN IS NOT A CONFERENCE CHAMPION. THEREFORE FLORIDA DESERVES IT

IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE, THEN OH WELL. THIS IS PAYBACK FOR 1997 AND YOUR B.S. ACCOLADES YOU WOLVERINES COLLECTED THAT YEAR.

ISN’T THIS JUST LIKE MICHIGAN. CAN NOT EVER WIN A LEGIT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, SO THEY HAVE TO TRY TO CRY THEIR WAY IN.

WHY IS LLOYD CARR CRYING ANYWAY? DID HE REALLY WANT TO GET THE DISHONOR OF GETTING HISASS HANDED TO HIM YET AGAIN BY TRESSELL?

IF I WERE LLOYD, I WOULD JUST BE COUNTING MY BLESSINGS THAT I DO NOT HAVE TO GET OUTFOXED BY TRESSELL YET AGAIN. HELL, IF HE WENT TO THE NC GAME AND LOST TO TRESSELL YET AGAIN, HE JUST MIGHT FIND HIMSELF OUT OF A JOB!!

Not only am I a Georgia alumni, but also one of its' biggest fans. In this game I will definitely pull for Florida. I know Ohio State is good, but they haven't played against as good defenses in their conference as Florida has in the SEC. I believe Florida will have to play much better than they did against Arkansas. I have seen their team play much better, but I didn't think any defense anywhere could hold McFadden to less that 100 yards. Although Arkansas has developed a good passing game this year, I don't think it is as good as Ohio State. The voters seem to think Michigan Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Southern Cal than they are. It would have been nice if those four teams had to play Florida, LSU, Auburn, and Tennessee in their bowls. That is why they don't was a playoff though If Florida plays their best game of the year they can will, but the score wii be close. It is time other teams from other conferences try to get a game scheduled with a team from the SEC, but most of them are smart enough to not schedule a SEC team, especial-ly if they have a perfect record in their conference.

hello Atlanta, this season for UF was very similiar to CMR second season, losing one game, and still with a couple of things lining up, could have very wel played for a NC. If you will recall, just never did have the two top team ever loose late. He ended up #3 that year. If there were 2 undefeated team today, UF wouldnt be “sniffing” the NC game either. IN fact, except for an improbable unranked UCLA upset, they still wouldnt be. Or if Michigan didnt have the unfortunete situation of losing thier one game to the VERY team nobody wanted to see them play again. Try not to make lame comparisons in here in the future please. Enjoy the situation, and Meyer certainly put them in great position, but be realistic.

Does Michigan deserve another shot at us? No. Are they the 2nd best team in the nation? Yes. I think Michigan would have been a better game. Face it, the SEC is weak this year. I thought going into the Michigan game, it was going to be close. Going into the NC game, I think it will be a blow out! Hey UF fans, I said it 2 weeks ago, and I will say it again, be careful what you wish for. These Buckeyes are not Auburn, LSU, Kentucky, Georgia, or Tennessee. These Buckeyes are fast, big, and deep. We also have a coach in Jim Tressel that will out coach anyone in the country. Give him 36 days to get ready for an opponent, and you can forget about it.

You thought West Virginia put a whipping on your SEC champ from last year (and who was that again?), you ain’t seen nothing. The SEC went down last year, and it will again.

This game doesn’t prove that once conference is better than the other. It only proves that the best team in one conference is better than the best team in the other conference. As a neutral fan (Notre Dame) I’ll admit that the SEC is best from top to bottom, but no way is Florida better than Ohio State. I don’t even like Ohio State, I rooted for Michigan when they played, but there is no question Ohio State is the best team in the country , period.

Btw, as far as strength of schedule, this will be the 3rd time the Buckeyes have played the number 2 team in the same season. It’s never happened before.

That said, I say Florida deserves to play OSU. They won the SEC, Michigan didn’t and already lost to OSU.

It was interesting listening to Meyer arguing against a rematch. Guess how Florida won their national championship. Yup, rematch against FSU after their loss in November.

OSU will handily beat Florida. OSU has the edge on running game, passing game, special teams and defense. OSU also has a scrambling quarterback with poise, accuracy and athleticism.

Being a Gator fan, I’d be hard pressed to argue against Michigan deserving a shot at the title especially seeing how we got our national title back in the mid 90’s (a team my cousin D.Jackson played for, Go Ft. White, Fl!!) in a rematch and subsequent back-alley, reach as far as your arm will go back, what-did-the-five-finger-say -to-the-face, rusty-knuckled, backhand pimp smacking we laid on the Florida State Criminoles. Truth be told, I’m still against the BCS system because even other teams other than the two current participants in the this year’s title game deserve a shot. I mean really, ONE loss and you’re most likely done for the year? There are about FIVE of those type teams and they’re seperated by strength of schedule and a couple of computers. Could you imagine if the NFL judged who made the playoffs and their seedings by strength of schedule? Yuck! Having said all that, oh well. For once in my life something controversial works out for MY team. I remember last year, PRIOR to our (cough, cough, clears throat)CHAMPIONSHIP in b-ball (Get well soon, Corey Brewer!), how everyone laughed when I said the University the Florida would be the 1st school to simultaneously be the champions in both football and basketball in our lifetime.

Good luck Gators! Not only can Ohio State run and pass the ball equally well, they play great defense as well, something the Gators offense CAN’T do. Put Florida in the Big Ten and they easily have at least 3 losses. The SEC may have 5 teams ranked in the Top 25, but the Big Ten has 3 teams in the Top 6. I think Florida deserves the shot, but here’s the harsh reality Gators fans: if Florida played Michigan this season, the Gators would lose by at least 2 touchdowns. THAT IS THE REALITY! Ohio State wins this game and the championship!

If it really came down to who was better. Michigan is a much better football team than the Gators. Florida has just had too many close calls this year, and their defense has been unpredictable at best. Some people seem to forget Florida has gotten lucky a few times this season. (i.e.-South Carolina and Vandy). Don’t forget the Gators lead the nation in penalties per game to ruin any chances at even keeping the game close with the Bucks. Get ready to watch the backups in the 4th quarter. The Gators are finally going to get a reality check against the best team in the nation, and realize how medicore they really are. Besides that, FLA has played more ranked teams and has more teams in the top 10 than michigan. I can’t stand the gators but in this case I have to agree they should go. The BCS is constantly emphasing that under their system EVERY GAME COUNTS. To put Michigan in would contradict that. It’s not fair that Ohio St. should have to replay a team in their conference whom they already beat.

The whole problem began when they didn’t drop Michigan about five spots after their loss like they do everybody else when they lose. It’s a political and thus flawed system…give us a plus one game at least.

By Go State

December 4, 2006 08:12 AM | Link to this

Florida definitely deserves to have a shot at Ohio St. Michigan and their fans can cry all they want, but they had their chance to beat Ohio St. and they couldn’t get it done. And if they want to whine about Florida having the advantage by having an extra game (SEC Championship), then think about this Wolverwhines…even if the Big Ten had a championship game, Michigan STILL wouldn’t go to the National Championship game. They lost…get over it. No one outside the state of Michigan wanted to see a rematch anyway…it wouldn’t prove a thing. The other argument for Florida is they played a tougher schedule. I’m a Penn State fan and I’ll tell you the Big Ten is probably the 4th best conference this year. Ohio St. will probably be the only Big Ten team to win their bowl game (although I’m hoping history repeats itself and Penn State embarasses the Vols again on New Year’s Day). USC will beat Michigan…Wisconsin is a farce (and yes, I know they beat Penn State…we have no offense)and the rest of the Big Ten is mediocre at best. Florida has a shot at beating Ohio St., especially since Troy Smith will have to fight the curse of the Heisman Trophy, but I’ll say it will be close….Ohio St 34 Florida 31

Say what you want, Michigan played 1 tough team all year and that was Ohio State. Heck, they barely beat Ball State at home. Florida, as much as I hate to say it, played a tougher schedule hands down. If you take the teams that Michigan played and then compare them to the teams Florida played, the teams Florida played would win out over Michigans opponents. The SEC is the Best Conference in College Football from Top to Bottom and Finally they get rewarded for that. How about when Auburn went Undefeated and 13-0, tell me they weren’t robbed of playing for the National Championship!

Rematches stink!! No incentive for the #1 team to beat a rival AGAIN. You can’t forget the FSU/FL rematch about 10 years ago where FSU prevailed in the regular season game then got slaughtered in the rematch. There was no incentive. Been there, beat them. That’s how OSU would feel. On the other side they are playing for EVERYTHING. No rematches for me ever again. Let other teams get an opportunity to make it a real good game. Very glad to see UF in the game. We’ll see how good the Big 10 really is. Very weak conference this year.

The BCS “formula” ( kept in a mayonaise jar under the porch at Funk and Wagnalls) is supposed to have a “strength of schedule” factor included. If this is true why are so many complaining about which conf is weaker or stronger? Maybe now this joke formula needs to be tweaked again for the one-thousanth time so that “conference strength-of-schedule” is included. Anyway it shows once more that we need the Supreme Court to decide who the champ is until we get a playoff.

The question is 88”Does Michigan deserve a do-over?”** The answer is a resounding no. It was bad when Florida got a second shot at FSU to win the National Championship. When is the last time a team lost and didn’t even fall one spot?

Michigan is a great team. During the season they MIGHT have played a little better than Florida. I’m a Dawg fan and at saying that I also know that Florida had one of the toughest, if not the toughest, schedule in the country. Sorry Michigan, I do feel for ya, but you already played OSU. Florida deserves this chance.

I was looking forward to a OSU/USC matchup however. USC Choked! Go Gators! Keep it in the family. SEC is #1. Go all SEC teams in their Bowls. Let’s show them that it is the best conference in the land.

p.s. What is the deal with Notre Dame going to the Sugar. Now that’s rigged! ND Sucks!

For everyone who has been saying that Florida should go because “Michigan had it’s chance and lost to OSU”…. that logic is completely ignorant. You’re essentially saying that it’s impossible for the two best teams to ever come from the same conference.

I’m sick of hearing all the media criticizing Urban Meyer and praising Carr for not campaigning for the BCS. It was evident they were doing all they could for him and Michigan. It reminds me of how the mainstream media lobbies for the Democrats every election cycle and is patently unfair. ESPN and ABC who hold a monopoly in college football are clearly in the tank for the Big 10, Big 12, and PAC 10 and do their best to promote the teams they broadcast. Luckily Meyer was given coverage by the media and was persuasive enough to sway the voters.

As a Michigan alum I’m obviously upset we were passed over in this insane BCS system and disgusted with Urban Meyer’s whining all week. Carr has more class than to do that. Do I think we’re better than Florida? You bet, and so do most people! Do I also think Florida deserved to play OSU? Sure. Absolutely. And so did we. That’s the problem with this stupid “no playoff” system. It becomes a popularity contest decided by coaches and sportswriters and computers and teams who whine the loudest and greed and not on the field where it SHOULD be decided as it is in every other sport, including Division II football.

NO THE GATERS DO NOT DESERVE TO GO TO THE BCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. THEY WERE CLEARLY RANKED IN FOURTH PLACE GOING INTO SATURDAY’S GAMES. THE WOLVERINES WERE CLEARLY RANKED IN THIRD PLACE GOING INTO SATURDAY’S GAMES. SINCE USC LOST, THAT SHOULD PUT MICHIGAN IN THE #2 SPOT IN THE NATION & FLORIDA IN THE #3 SPOT. JUST BECAUSE MICHIGAN NEVER HAD A WEEK OFF UNTIL THEIR SEASON WAS OVER, SHOULDN’T KICK THEM OUT OF THE #2 SPOT. I MEAN AFTER ALL THEIR ONLY LOSS WHAT TO OHIO STATE AT OHIO STATE BY A FIELD GOAL. IN MY OPINION, THE BUCKEYES & THE WOLVERINES ARE THE #1 & #2 TEAMS IN THE NATION. EVERYONE WILL SEE COME JANUARY 8TH WHEN THE BUCKEYES STRAIGHT WHOOP THE GATERS. It seems that no one wants to see Michigan play Ohio State again except Michigan fans. Even Ohio State doesn’t want to have to play them again. Truth is, both teams deserve it so someone was going to get screwed regardless. War Eagle - You might want to check Notre Dame’s schedule because they beat a couple ranked teams. Ga Tech and Navy, maybe. But, they still stink so I agree, they should be on the outside of the BCS.
Underestimating Florida in this game will be a huge asset. Have we not learned that the team that is suppose to whip the other has not the past couple years… Everyone is talking about how great Ohio State is but, they have struggled here and there this season. Not like they won every game by 20 points. I think the way the dawgs are playing right now they could give them a run. Put that in your pipe and smoke it…

It is a shame that Michigan is in the same conference that Ohio State is because if they were not they would be playing for the national championship. Lets look at this carefully, after dismantling the Notre Dame team Michigan loses to Ohio State (in Ohio), which may have been one of the most competitive games this year. USC lost to Oregon State and destroys Notre Dame but somehow bests Michigan in the rankings. That was very strange. Was the human element the cause of this? Well, who knows but we know now that handing a #2 ranking to a team such as USC was wishful thinking; because UCLA game them a sucker punch which still has Trojans knees shacking. Will they be ready for the big match-up against Michigan? I hope so, because that has the makings of the best BCS Bowl game this year. Yes better than the national championship. Florida is a good team. They are a SEC team (tough conference) but they lost to Auburn. It funny to notice that there wasn’t much talk of Florida facing Ohio State until after USC lost Saturday. What did Michigan do? Did they lose some backyard scrimmages (two weeks in a row) that have decreased the strength of the team? Oh well, it happened before so why stop now, pass the ranking to Florida. I hope the battle between the so-called best two teams will be a great match, but I think it will be a blow out. Hey, don’t take my word for it. Let them play so we don’t just hand the national championship to Ohio State; or maybe they already have.

It’s not the Gators we hate, it’s their fans. If they could show the least little humility and a greater dose of gratitude, this would truly be a great moment for the SEC. Clearly this conference is stronger than it has ever been and parity is as close as it could be. God forbid a Bulldog wishing the Gators well. I do the team, not the fans, unless, of course, they come back grateful and contrite with a win over the second most-hated team in the country for me. I have zero respect for a conference that doesn’t have a championship game, or doesn’t play all memebrs in a year. The Big Ten always has someone ranked higher than it should and that team always goes to a better bowl than the team in the SEC that loses the championship game. If they were a real conference, maybe Mich-OSU would have met in the Big 10 champ. game and the winner would be playing in the Natl. title game and the loser would and should be out, even if it were OSU. Just ask an SEC team what they would expect if they were undefeated and lost the SEC champ. game, would they be expecting to go to the natl title game, he—ll no. They would have some self respect and go to their bowl and play hard. Unfortuantely, Mich. and the rest of the big ten gets to always make these arguments because they don’t have the stones to play a champ. game. “Oh no, are you kidding, that would give one of our top teams another loss!!!” Don’t give me the excuse the Big 10 only has 11 teams and can’t divide into divisions. There are plenty of good teams who would kill to be invited into the big 10. Did you ever think this is the exact reason the big 10 doesn’t invite another team? Without a championship game, one school is saved a loss, and doesn’t fall in the rankings and goes to a better bowl and makes more money for their school and therefore more money for the big ten. Big Ten, you made your bed, now you should lie in it. This is the other side of the coin. Deal with it and shut up. Go Dawgs!

The problem with the BCS results is that they were manipulated by the voters to get a desired result and to prevent a rematch. The voters are voting to identify the best teams, not what games they want to watch. If Florida loses big to Ohio State, will Michigan be # 2?

I’m glad an SEC team is going to the NC (about time we got some recognition in a conference that’s so tough, we keep knocking ourselves out of undefeated schedules), though I wish it wasn’t Florida. With that said, I think Michigan deserves it. yes, they arleady lost to OSU, but at the NC title game, all that matters is who wins then. And did no one here rooting for the Gators see the Arkansas game. That was some p** poor football by the Gators and Leeks downright sucks.

The BCS is supposed to be about the 2 best teams (#1 & #2) playing for the championship NOT the teams you want to see play because the two top teams played just 3 weeks ago. Potential ratings shouldn’t matter.

Michigan lost by 3 points in a high scoring game to the team ranked #1 all season, Florida lost to a team that ended up ranked #10.

If the BCS voters didn’t want to snub the SEC champs that did lose that one game, why did they feel fine snubbing an undefeated Auburn in 2004?

What’s going to happen when Florida loses by 2 touchdowns?

GATORS DO NOT DESERVE TO BE IN THE FINALS!!!! They played uga, vanderbilt, south carolina, and another florida team all within 7 points. They also lost to Auburn ranked 11th (I think) and lost by 10 points. Michigan’s only lost was to the number 1 team and they lost by 3 points compared to 10 points.

Amelia you don’t know what you are talking about, the only common opponent for FL and Michigan was Vanderbilt and both teams struggled to beat them and matter of fact Michigan played them at the “Big House” and needed six bad calls by the officials to win while Florida played Vandy in Nashville and had several bad calls go against them. Next strength of schedule whether you like it or not goes to the Gators as the only real teams that Michigan played were Ohio State- Loss, Wisconsin- Win and Norte Dame- Win, while Florida beat- LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and South Carolina all bowl teams. Also you mentioned that Michigan lost by three, well if you had seen the game then you would know Michigan scored a meaningless TD in the last 30 seconds of the game to make the score seem closer than it was. Next if you had watched Florida and Auburn then you would know that Auburn scored a TD on the last play when FL was trying to score, which also was meaningless and pushed the score to 10 points instead of 4 points.

As for Ohio State and Florida it will be a close game as both teams have very good defenses. The only advantages that Ohio State have are at the QB and place kicker positions, all other positions go to FL with overall team speed as well. I believe that it will come down to which team makes the fewer mistakes and wants it more, but if the better team wins, which by the way doesn’t always happen, then Florida will win.

I could not say it better so I will repeat what you said. Go Bengals.

The only thing I will add is if the Referees had been calling ND games correctly then they would have five losses not 2 as they needed help in the GT, Mich. State and UCLA games to win.

Predictions:

Ohio State - 34 Florida - 14

Ohio State is the better team no matter who they play. Michigan could not have won their conference because of Ohio State, but they were still worthy of consideration minus the Ball State game. Florida played a hellacious schedule that few teams could have won 7-8 games in. Let them play, watch them get beat.

Virginia Tech - 27 Rabies-infested mutts - 6

This could be much worse. VA Tech is a physical, nasty team that reminds me of the trash that goes on in the SEC. Richt is a nice fella, but Frank Beamer is a much better coach. The Hokies special teams and defense will send the hounds home howling. UGA may boast about SEC football, but they’ll be unexpectedly surprised by “Beamer Ball”. Good luck to Stafford, he may be missing limbs after this one…

Georgia Tech - 17 West Virginia - 10

Sounds crazy? I bleed white and gold, but realistically this game is not unwinnable. KaMichael Hall, Joe Anoai, and Kenny Scott will not walk off that field without killing someone, forcing a turnover or turnovers, and finding a way to get this win. I won’t cry if Reggie is out by the second half. It’s a shame that a senior playing in his last game still probably won’t play smart enough to lead his team and complete passes (fundamentals for any quarterback.) Look for Tenuta’s defense to slow WV’s running game enough to keep it close, and then a big play wins it in the end for Tech. No surprise if it comes on the defensive side of the ball. GO JACKETS!!!

OSU v FL is the ONLY rational decision!

Why? 1) Because UM already lost to OSU and FL has not lost to either team. And, 2) Because FL & UM will never get to “play-off” for the #2 slot.

So, there is only one way to determine who is the better team and that is for FL to play OSU. The end-game stats will define the rest.

Scenario 1: UM beats OSU in the BCS Bowl. Now the teams are very arguably tied for 1st! Both would be 1 loss teams to each other.

Scenario 2: OSU beats FL in the BCS Bowl and UM wins the Rose Bowl. UM would arguably move back the #2 slot (depending on OSU & FL game stats)but more importantly, a definite #1 team would emerge.

THIS IS THE ONLY, AND THE RIGHT, DECISION! The BCS actually did it right this time!

I’m reading a lot of - “Michigan had its chance. Of course this is the equitable decision.” — I’m wondering what you same people were saying in 1996.

If you have to win your conference in order to participate, just stipulate it so from now on. But that doesn’t mean the best 2 teams are playing this year. The only people who really know this stuff is Vegas, because there are millions at stake and it’s their job to get it right……….. and they have Michigan as a 6 point favorite over Florida on a neutral field. The opening line for the game is now OSU -8. If you think the Buckeyes would be giving Michigan 8 points you’re delusional. THE Ohio State University Buckeyes 38, Florida Gators 24. And lastly, buckeyes are poisonous to aligators.

mcdawg,

Chris Leak is a highly overrated QB who always chokes in the big games. His bonehead shovel pass in the Ark. game was very Reggie Ball-ish and his play-calling in general is that of a dear caught in headlights, hello Auburn?! He’ll throw 3 picks and maybe 1 TD. Florida may have a good defense but it has never seen anything like Ohio State’s offense. On the flip side, Ohio State’s defense is miles ahead of Florida’s pedestrian offense. This may start slow, but Ohio State will pour it on in the second half, 31-10 as Ohio State hoists the crystal football.

Some thoughts on Florida’s selection for the BCS Championship Game … .

A rematch between Ohio State and Michigan would have been a Big 10 championship game, not a national championship game. If the Big 10 wants a champtionship, B10 officials should convince Notre Dame or Louisville to join up, and get on with it (clearly, this was the intent when Penn State joined several years ago).

It is indisputable that the SEC had greater depth than the Big 10 this year. Both have 3 teams ranked in the top 10 of the final BCS standings; the SEC has two more in the second 10, and the Big 10 has none. The SEC has two more teams receiving votes in the BCS standings after the top 25; the Big 10 has one. Overall BCS rankings advantage, 7-4, SEC.

In January bowl games, SEC Florida plays B10 Ohio State, B10 Wisconsin plays SEC Arkansas, and SEC Tennessee play B10 Penn State. Additionally, SEC LSU plays midwestern independent Notre Dame, and B10 Michigan plays a very good Pac-10 Southern Cal. There will plenty of on-the-field evidence to discuss after the bowls are played regarding the reletive merits of Southern versus Midwestern football.

My advice to Michigan: You’re a very good team, but more than one very good team has been left out of the BCS Championship Game the last several years (e.g. 12-0 SEC Champion Auburn in 2004). Start getting ready for USC in the Rose Bowl; otherwise, your team is a likely candidate for the traditional Rose Bowl upset.

As for my fellow SEC fans, we Gators appreciate your support, and I hope our team gives the mighty Buckeyes a good game. : ]

With all of the good things that have happend in the last 72 hours, I hate to sound a sour note, but … the SEC may be the best football conference in th country, but our SEC officials are not the best. Our teams deserve better quality officiating, Mr. Slive. While Florida, Tennesse, LSU and Georgia have all been victims of seriously questionable calls that impacted outcomes this season, the first pass interference penalty against Florida in the SEC Championship Game was so egregiously wrong that the officials should have their noses rubbed in their mistake, and should be forced to sit a game or two as a result. That awful call had the potential to throw the game, and that shouldn’t happen in the SEC championship.

With five weeks to get ready and five weeks to get healthy and get all of their starting linemen, backs and receivers back in the line-up, I suspect that they will give OSU a much better game than many of the skeptics are predicting. The Gator D is good enough to hang with the Buckeyes, and I hope Meyer and the offense rise to the occasion. The football gods do love an upset … .

Everyone knows that the game of the year is going to be the Motor City Bowl with Central Michigan vs. Middle Tennessee St. What a Matchup! As for as the Big 10/SEC debate it is clear that the Big 10 is nothing but scum and is a horrible conference other than the top 3. How the hell can a non conference winner be allowed to play in the Nat’l. Title game. If you can’t win your Conference, then you shouldn’t get a shot at the big game. Michigan fans are scum and deserve this fate. They would spit at Santa Claus if they had the chance. Go to hell Big 10, you gays.

I’m southern born and southern raised and LOVE the SEC but I don’t think they got this one right. Michigan lost to #1 on the road by 3points during an emotionally charged game for both sides. Florida lost to #11 on the road by 10 or so, played a clearly overrated UGA team close, an ABYSMAL FSU team close and had some push overs on their schedule to boot! I think that but for 4 teams in the SEC, it was weak this year. While the UF OSU matchup looks like it should be interesting, I think that Michigan should have been the team to play OSU for the Nat’l Championship! My prediction? Ohio St. 36 Florida 19

As a DAWG with a son who is a Gator, I have sort of taken the attitude that the Gators should be proud of what they have accomplished this year. If they can win. More power to them. If not, you still have to impressed with what they have done and the fact that there coach, like Mark Richt, runs a class program.

Listen to ALL the cry babies for Mich.! HAHA FLA had the harder schedule. Yeah, Mich lost to Ohio St. So? I think the BCS needs to include you MUST win your division to be able to play in the BCS Championship game. Playoff system would be nice. Florida is the best number 2 team. They beat more top 10 & 25 team this year. Every game in the SEC is a hard game, a rivalry if you will. Most of the dingbat dum dums outside of the south don’t realize that. Any team like Ohio St., Mich., or stinky Norte Dame playing in the SEC would lose 2 to 3 times. Everyone in the US is biased toward the SEC and loves BIG 10 or PAC 10. Both of those are watered down except for 2 teams in each. SEC has 5-6 or more top 25 teams every year. So, all you Florida haters, watch out, expect Ohio St to get smothered by a REAL defense and not a weak one like Mich. has! HAHA!!! I see FLA ini an upset 28-24

One last point … Boise State? In the BCS Championship Game? We can argue about whether Florida or Michigan was more deserving, but Boise State did not play a single team among the top 25 in the final BCS standings or AP, USA Today or Harris polls. Boise State should consider themselves lucky to have have gotten a Fiesta Bowl bid, and their coach and team had better concentrate on preparing for Oklahoma because the Sooners know how to play January bowl ball.

The SEC owns the Big 10, and it always has.

The SEC has a combined winning percentage in excess of .650 against the Big Slow. The SEC has more MNC’s, the SEC has had more or it’s league members win the MNC than the Big 10. And the SEC has more players in the NFL.

As an example, here is Ohio State’s record verses SEC teams:

2001 Lost to South Carolina 31-28

2000 Lost to South Carolina 24-7

    1995 Lost to Tennessee 20-14

    1994 Lost to Alabama 24-17

    1992 Lost to Georgia 21-14

    1989 Lost to Auburn 31-14

    1988 (Yippee) Beat LSU 36-33

    1987 Tied LSU 13-13

    1986 Lost to Alabama 16-10

    1977 Lost to Alabama 36-6

1935, Yes that’s 70 years ago, Won vs Kentucky 19-6

    1934 Won vs. Vanderbilt 20-0

    1931 Lost to Vanderbilt 26-21

Counting games verses the SEC in the last 70 years, Ohio State is 1-9 verses SEC teams.

I hate Florida and their cheeseball, neveaux relevant program. They may or may not be the first, second, or third best team in American. But they damn sure deserve to be there.

I could really care less, it it’s Florida playing in the BCS National Championship Game, or Michigan. They are both deserving. How soon we forget that their National Championship was won against a team that had demolished them during the regular season ( Florida State Seminoles) Florida is clearly not the #2 team in the land and for that reason they should not be in the big game! I’m enthralled about the BCS this year.

Out of curiosity SEC folks, on the offchance that no SEC teams win their respective bowls this year, will it then silence critics of Notre Dame? The Big Ten?

The overwhelming response is, of course, no.

Notre Dame could beat everyone in all Division I schools by a margin of 382 points, go undefeated, and people would still complain about how Notre Dame is overrated.

I’ve come to grips with that.

The problem here, however, is that a massive following seem to belive that the SEC is the only division in the country that plays a tough schedule.

    Because the SEC always has:

Ohio State Michigan USC West Virginia (oops. Already saw the power the SEC displayed on that one.) Notre Dame Texas Oklahoma Nebraska

to contend with. Right? That’s all they play. Every game.

    Thought so.

I say Mich should worry about USC and forget about it or they will get embarrassed in the Rose Bowl. Then people will say the right decision was made. Also, Mich played Ohio State and lost. Had they won there would be no argument. I could see if they had lost to some other team. But how can anyone justify putting Mich in the NC against Ohio State when they have already played and lost. You would figure if all else was equal, the winner should go and the loser should not. That much was at least settled on the field. Nobody is saying it but two teams from the same conference will never play for a NC. Unless there is no other candidate.

Uh, “Kevin,” here’s a brief history lesson regarding the ‘96 UF-FSU games …

The “cry-babies” lost the 1996 FSU-UF game, 24-21, on the road in Tallahassee. That’s not exactly “demolished.” Furthermore, there were plenty of questionable calls by the refs and questionable sportsmanship by FSU in that game, when it appeared that several FSU players were trying to intentionally injure the Gators’ starting quarterback and tailback. That game generated a lot of bitterness between the programs, and provided a lot of motivation to the Gators in subsequent years.

You may also recall that there was no BCS pairing in 1996. The SEC champion Gators received the automatic Sugar Bowl Bid; the Seminoles got invited to the SEC’s number one bowl because the ACC was not strong enough to rate an automatic New Year’s bowl for its champion. Florida won the ‘96 Sugar Bowl, 55-20, and it wasn’t as close as the score would lead you to believe. Now, that’s “demolished.” Ohio State upset Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl, and the Gators became the ‘96 national champions by default.

Moreover, the Gators didn’t lobby for the Sugar Bowl berth; UF’s Sugar Bowl berth was already earned by virtue of Florida going 9-0 (including a 45-30 conference championship win over a very good Alabama team) in the SEC. At the time, a lot of us Gators thought the rematch was a little wierd, too, but we didn’t sit on the Sugar Bowl selection committee, now, did we?

Please also keep in mind that the ‘96 Sugar Bowl paired the SEC champion against the ACC champion. It was not the ACC champion versus the ACC (or SEC) runner-up.

The SEC vs. ACC head-to-head was a classic Southern football match-up for which many ACC fans had been begging. Like someone else said above, be careful for what you wish.

So, if anyone was looking for the facts to distinguish Florida’s ‘96 rematch from Michigan’s hoped-for ‘06 mulligan, here they are.

As a USC TROJAN fan I am saddended that we will not play for the title. Yet even if we had won Saturday, I dont know if we were worthy of that honor at this time. The reality is that Florida does deserve to play Ohio State and if Michigan had been in the game then there would be good reason for Ohio State to claim a split title because they would have split the two games. Anyway Michigan fans, quit whinning about having to play in the “lousy” Rose Bowl and get ready for the Trojans, as we look forward to meeting again. Congrats to Florida and we will see you next year in the title game.

    Predictions:

    Ohio State - 34 Florida - 14

Ohio State is the best team in the country and who they play is really irrelevant. Michigan could not win it’s conference because of Ohio State, but they were worth serious consideration for the title game and they’ll beat USC in the Rose Bowl. Florida played a hellacious schedule that few teams could have won 7-8 games in, so let them play. And watch them lose…

    Virginia Tech - 27 Rabies-infested mutts - 10

This could be a lot worse. VA Tech is a physical, nasty football team that reminds me of the crap that goes on in the SEC. Richt is a nice fella, but Frank Beamer is a considerably better coach. “Beamer Ball” will give UGA headaches in all 3 phases. Careful Stafford, you may be missing some limbs after this one…

    Georgia Tech - 17 West Virginia - 13

Sounds crazy? Sure, I bleed white and gold, but this game is not unwinnable for the Jackets. KaMichael Hall, Joe Anoai, and Kenny Scott will not leave the field at Alltell Stadium without killing someone after being embarassed by their own offense in the ACC title game. The defense will play with pride and tenacity. I won’t cry if Ball is out by the second half. It’s a shame that a senior playing in his last game won’t play smart football and lead his team (or just complete a damn pass!). You want to let your departing senior QB lead your team in his final game, but Taylor Bennett needs to be ready to play this week. The team is more important than one individual, who seems so worried about only himself. Watch for Tenuta’s D to keep it close and watch for Tashard Choice to have a good game despite the WV run defense. A big play wins it in the fourth quarter for Tech, and don’t be surprised if it comes from someone on the defensive side of the ball. GO JACKETS!!!

I’m a diehard Dawgs fan true and true, but Florida definitely deserves its shot it the NC game. In 2002, Ohio State squeaked by Cincinatti, Illinois, Michigan, Purdue, and Penn State…yet won the national title. I’ll probably never say thus again, but since the mullets are representing the SEC, I’ll be cheering for them. Do your conference proud. Lastly, compare Florida and Michigan’s schedules. Florida had “ugly” wins vs. us (8-4), Tennessee (9-3), USC (7-5), and Bama (6-6). Michigan nearly lost to Ball State- at home!

Get a reality grip People! The Big Ten isn’t as specila as the media would have you believe. Mich only played 5 teams with winning records. One was OSU which coincidentally only played 5 with winning records and opponents records amounted to a .500 winning percentage. Also, one of Mich big “wins” was Wisc. They only played 3 teams with a winning record. Opponents combined records were ~60 W vs ~80 losses.

Do you honestly think these teams deserve the National attention they’re getting?

As a devoted UGA Dawg, I hate to say it but Fla deserves it. They will beat an OSU team that has only been tested by a Michigan squad (whose biggest test was trying to devour its creampuffs in one bite instead of two).

Ohio State is going to rip Florida. The Southeast Conference is nowhere as good as people want to think. Of all the teams I’ve seen this year, I’d say Michigan and Ohio St. are the top two.

This year, Florida played weak traditional powers like Georgia and Florida State. Florida did not play a single team that displayed the dominance of Ohio State.

Louisville can beat the Gators. Southern Cal can beat the Gators. Hell, Rutgers at home can beat the Gators.

One of the major questions you have to ask yourself is: Should a 2nd place conference team get a shot at the National Title…when there is a BCS conference champ with the same record?

I do not like Florida at all, but I have to agree that they should be playing for the title instead of Michigan. Michigan had their chance at Ohio State and they lost. Florida won the SEC and has one loss just like 2nd place big ten Michigan….. (Maybe the big ten should find another member and have a championship game?) I am not going to pull for Florida because I am a Georgia fan….but I believes the helps the SEC down the road……I know that if the Dawgs where 12-1 SEC Champs and were fighting for the #2 BCS spot against a 2nd place PAC-Ten, Big Ten, Big-12, ACC school….I would expect the dawgs to play in the BCS game…… Does the BCS work?……….NO

Ahh, Gator Guy, you thought you could get away with that load of crap you spewed about 1996’s FSU - UF games? “Questionable calls” sounds very comfortable coming out of a Gator (or Dawg or Tiger) mouth. Maybe it’s because you say it so much. I bet you will be saying it after Ohio State completely demolishes you and makes a joke out of the oh-so-sacred SEC.

Ohio State should not play Michigan for the same reason FSU should not have played UF in 1997. No team should have to beat a top five team TWICE in one season to win the national championship. It’s ridiculous. Playoffs or no playoffs, BCS or no BCS, having to beat an extremely high-caliber team twice in one season (within weeks!) is absurd. For that reason, UF probably deserves to be here. In the end, however, it won’t matter. I predict OSU 38, UF 12. If it’s that close.

Second I have the game on tape and Penn State got a few calls from the refs such as on third down with a little over 3 minutes to go, Penn State’s left tackle moved so the Dawg Defensive man moved, the pass was incomplete and the officials penalized Georgia for being off sides which gave them a first down and they were able to run out the clock. Also on that first touch down pass your receiver pushed off even the announcers commented about it being offensive pass interference. So please this isn’t about Georgia or Pen State it is about a Very Good Team getting “Hosed” by the BCS once again.

It’s about time the SEC got some respect, even if it has to be…yuck…spit…yuck…Florida; ok..I said it. ROLL TIDE (next year).

Big Dawg, are you seriously making excuses and claiming that the refs were biased for a game played in 1983??? You lost … 23 years ago … get over it. And Penn St 27 Georgia 23, UGA makes everything about them all the time with their incessant barking. I’m with you!

Congratulations to Florida for being a different conference from Ohio State. This is the only reason they jumped Michigan. Do any of you honestly believe that Florida would have jumped Michigan had USC won Saturday?

Of course, the SEC championship game also affords a team that might have lost in the regular season a rematch, but let’s not go there.

Andrew, it also affords a team the chance to lose and get knocked out. Did OSU have to wory about playing Wisconsion?

NoleBuzz- You seem to have forgotten that the ‘97 Sugar bowl was not the National Championship game. If ASU beat OSU a few hours earlier, ASU would have been the champs. You are comparing apples to oranges. Have fun in Bosie.

Kevin, the score from the 1996 game was FSU 24 UF 21. I wouldn’t call that being demolished. Now 52-20 UF over FSU in the Sugar Bowl for the NC was an A* woopin’. If Florida comes ready to play and stays off the penalty wagon they have a great chance to win this one. Good luck to ALL the SEC teams during bowl season!

NoleBuzz——Please review my posting again. You clearly missed several material points because you are still fuming to have someone point out the poor sportsmanship of your ‘96 team (thugs!). The FSU highlight reel from that game looked like a compilation of the worst on-the-field behavior by the University of Miami over the last 20 years. And, yes, that is intended as an insult. The game film showed one of the FSU players stomping on the Gators’ Heisman-winning quarterback’s throwing arm after the play was whistled dead. No flag. Nice. Good programs exercise institutional control over their players (e.g. Spurrier, Richt, Meyer, Tuberville, Carr). Pull that crap in Meyer, Richt or Spurrier’s programs and you’ll find yourself looking for a new place to play football. Even the last coach in Miami got canned for the same sort of shennanigans by his players (see this year’s UM-FIU game). And, yes, it still makes me angry 10 years later.

The failure to call multiple personal fouls for these infractions are the “questionable calls” to which I referred above. If you are attempting to justify that kind of thuggery, you should be ashamed.

Back to the main point: FSU got invited to the SEC’s contract tie-in bowl (Sugar Bowl). We won the SEC championship, therefore, we got an automatic bid to go to New Orleans. Period. If FSU really didn’t want to play UF again, they had the option of accepting another bowl bid. FSU’s acceptance was all about the money; in ‘96, the Sugar Bowl was the second highest-paying bowl after the Fiesta. These were completely different circumstances than the present BCS bowl line-up, where the schools have no choice in the matter.

BTW, your team’s attrociously poor sportsmanship provided all of the motivation that the Gators needed in the ‘96 Sugar Bowl. You may recall the 55-20 pasting that your team suffered in the “rematch.” That’s the beauty of a properly motivated and well-coached college football team, and your kids provided the motivation. Poetic justice.

Furthermore, AtlantaGatorLee is right: the Gators had no idea that they would be playing for ‘96 national championship when FSU accepted its Sugar Bowl bid. The Gators were more motivated to beat the snot out of the Seminoles for the cheap shots delivered during the regular season game. Repaying FSU with a five-touchdown margin of victory was the proper form of payback; beating FSU for the mythical national championship was just the icing on the cake.

Just so you know, NoleBuzz, I’m not even a Gators crazy. I just hate to see poor sportsmanship, cheap shots and thuggery rewarded. I cheer for FSU and our SEC opponents when they’re not playing Florida, so please don’t try to justify the horrible on-the-field behavior of your ‘96 players. You can’t; if you try, you look like a thug, too. If our UF kids behaved like that, under Spurrier or Meyer, they would be gone.

If you have any questions about the ‘96 rematch, I suggest that you re-read my posting above before you “react.”

florida just gets to go since fans dont want to see the sane game… its only so that more people will watch… everyone says that michigan had their chance but even though people dont want to see the same game, the real #2 team should get to go.

Michigan fans: act like men and stop your whining. This is a blog from the state of GEORGIA, you are lowly guests here, and whining is relegated to the Tech women who inhabit these blogs.

Florida fans: I hope the gators bring back a championship for the SEC. I never root for your team, but I will this game.

FYI, the 32-point drubbing of FSU in the ‘96 Sugar Bowl was largest margin of victory against the number one ranked team in bowl history. Ouch. If you ever needed an example of why you should treat your rivals and other annual opponents with respect, and not provide locker-room bulletin board material to them, this was it.

No Big Dawg, you dont no what you are talking about. It doesnt matter if you score in the first 5 minutes, the middle of the game or with 1 second to play. Its the score on the scoreboard at the end of the game that counts. All points are counted and it is fair that florida lost to auburn by 10 points. Nobody is perfect. Refs are going to make bad calls. They have people reviewing the plays and if a team is that upset about a play, well then thats what a challenge is for. Lets just see how much Florida loses by.

Finally a SEC team will have a chance to compete with a media blessed super team. I was always told we all put our pads on the same way. If Florida plays with the intensity and gumption they did against Arkansas, no team in the USA will beat them. Go Gators! Make us proud and I am a Dawg!

While I hate FL, fact is the SEC is the best conference in college football and FL is the Champ this year. Ohio State and Michigan are both WAY overrated. Neither would havde gotten through FL’s schedule with 9 wins much less 12. FL will win by 14+ and while I hate it, it is good for the SEC.
