Blank speaks out about Falcons

Falcons owner Arthur Blank said the entire organization is under evaluation and that finishing out of the playoffs and with an 8-8 record or worse, “is definitely not good enough, from any perspective.”

Blank refrained from offering a vote of confidence for coach Jim Mora.

What moves could be made to improve the team now? What moves would you make if the team doesn’t make the playoffs?

Would you keep Mora? How about Michael Vick? If this is not a playoff team with him as quarterback, would you consider having someone else behind center next season? Can you ever imagine the Falcons trading Vick?

Can the season be saved?

Are you glad Blank has spoken out?

This season is lost.

I am beginning to think Michael Vick is a liability. Great QB’s don’t stumble and fumble the game away.

We just need to get some players who want to win.

Maybe Mora should but Staub in at QB and use Vick as a reciever/running back.

Yes, I am glad Arthur has spoken. We should cut ties with Vick and move on. He is what he is. One day he will be great but the next week he will be awful. All hope for Vick and Mora died with the Cleveland loss.

congrats, mr. tee. only one post and already a racist comment from the so-called falcon faithful. but of course your little racist comment was made in a way where you can claim complete innocence about it and label people hyper sensitive. and then tell black people to stop making race an issue when you make it an issue first. if you want to criticize Mike Vick then go ahead and criticize Mike Vick. Black people do not have a problem with hating on Mike VIck. We hate him just as much as anyone else. It is the way you criticize and what you say that reveals your racist thoughts and beliefs. You do not need to go out like Kramer to be a racist. In fact, i would much rather deal with a million kramers every day than deal with people who pretend not be racist or sometimes even do not realize they are racist but who are nevertheless racist. If you are going to stab me to death, at least have the decency to come out at me man to man. don’t come at me like a devil, smiling in my face but nevertheless stabbing me in my back.

If you want the great bar room brawler to come off the bench and be the QB, then at least realize this his name is not spelled Staub. It is kind of funny that everyone calls Vick a thug (but still claims no racism) but then conveniently forgets that Vick has never gotten himself arrested in season during an off week like Schaub did in his rookie year. Schaub is the thug folks because his actins tell you that he is. All we know is that Mike Vick still dresses like a child (not a thug) and that he plays video games all night and day and we have never once heard of him getting arrested.

If you trade Vick, then you can kiss the remaining fan support in Atlanta goodbye. The Dome will be a boring place to go on Sundays and the team will suck worse than what they are now. Ticket sales will go down and the Falcons will be lucky to win 4 games the next year. So, think before you say stupid stuff. Vick is the best thing to happen to Atlanta in 10 years.Just get him somebody who can get open and catch a football….

I don’t see what was racist about either statement. I do not want schaub to replace vick, but that is because schaub is worth more in draft picks. Also schaub will never get a fair shake from the atlanta fans or press. Look at denver they are benching plummer and going with a rookie. plummers numbers are similar to vick. However the problem goes much deeper than vick. this coaching staff is the number one problem. You can see it in the lack of discipline and mental toughness. so forget about vick for now and get better coaches.

Schaub would be broken up behind that broken line. Vicks not perfect especially with the unforced fumbles but you really can’t judge him with inferior weapons. The only players on offense that would even be thought about as being in the “top twenty” in their position would be Dunn and Crumpler. I bet Manning or Brady would rather play with 4 of their line men in a game than 5 of ours!

Thanks AJC, Apparently the goal is to feed the frenzy of Vick-obsessed lunatics with yet another reason to spout completely illogical diatribes about him solely as opposed to all of the numerous problems regarding this team. By tomorrow morning there will undoubtedly be posts filled with insults and ignorance and for what? No one posting actually breaks down game film. The agenda is just to post hate against the team’s QB, that’s it. Nothing constructive, just pure hate. So congrats, AJC, job well done.

We’ve been talking over on Steve’s Blog, before the ignorant ‘necks found it where it was, about how Greg Knapp is submarining Vick’s career.

There is no excuse for the actions Greg Knapp has taken as the OC of this team.

He doesn’t let any of his QBs (including Schaub, hood-wearers) audible at the line of scrimage to change his crappy playcalls if the defense dictates a different look.

Greg Knapp is the reason why this offense is stuck in 1920. Greg Knapp is the reason that after a fairly decent 1st year as a starter (with numbers equal / comparable to Elway’s first year as a starter), Vick has never progressed as a QB.

Y’all do realize that last year, Jon Gruden said that if he had Vick’s singular talents, he’d scrap everything he’s ever done, everything he’s ever known as an offensive guru and design a brand new offense to take advantage of Vick.

If Jon Gruden, a guy much more accomplished than the absolute worst OC in the NFL right now (hint: that would be Greg Knapp) would accomadate himself to Vick, then why wouldn’t Knapp be willing to do that?

Greg Knapp is killing this team!

But Jimmy Mora, that petulant, immature child is also very much to blame as well.

But it’s not his fault, he shouldn’t have been hired in the first place.

No, the fault with this team, from hiring a crappy DC who’s an immature child to be our HC instead of Lovie Smith, and letting that petulant child bring his craptastic BFF, Greg Knapp to chain Michael Vick to an outdated offense, lies with Arthur Blank, the Rich Man.

Does anyone else here believe that if Arthur didn’t step in because he was wowed by Jimmy’s magic notebooks, that Rich McKay would have hired a DC who’s defenses in San Fran were soft and mediocre at best?

No, Rich would have hired the much more competant and mature Lovie Smith.

The true blame for everything belongs at the Rich Man’s feet.

The buck stops with you, Artie, and as much as you love your de facto son, Jimmy, he sucks and you should never had hired him in the first place.

It’s time to start all over again. And this time, when a competant person comes around for the job, don’t treat him like you treated Lovie Smith.

So Mora the Elder wad wrong as hell. No. 1, his son should never have been hired as the HC here. No. 2, the real coach killer is his son’s BFF, Greg Knapp.

That’s right, Greg Knapp, the only man who makes Jeff Bowden look like Mike Martz.**

FIRE GREG KNAPP NOW!!!

AND FIRE THAT PETULANT, IMMATURE CHILD JIMMY MORA, TOO!!!

i agree with birddawg, except for the part of firing jim mora. knapp has no clue what he is doing, even T.O. knew that when he let him know that in san. fran…..and all of these rumors of hiring mooch from the nfl n as oc are pretty crazy if not funny. lovie would have been a good choice for coach but i think jim is an equal candidate. also, having 8 starters missing (either from injury or just losing their starting role) don’t help either……….peace out

Mr Blank is getting what he paid for. A couple years ago when Mr. Blank went looking for a coach for the falcons he wasn’t looking for the best coach but the best white coach. Mr. Blank didn’t really interview Lovie Smith. If Mr Blank was looking for the best coach he would have hired Lovie Smith or Marvin Lewis coaches that not only have played the game but have coached on winning teams. Mr McKay didn’t build Tampa, Tony did. Look at Tampa now, and look at the Colts. Look at Manning and Palmer. Mr Blank needs to look in the mirror.

I believe that Warrick Dunn’s time in Atlanta is close to being over. With the exception of the first 3 games, he really hasn’t been producing great numbers on the ground and his style of running (or dancing in the backfield to wait for an opening, whichever you prefer) is allowing defenses to zero in on him and tackle him before he can hit the hole. I think that having a bigger RB in the backfield who is not afraid at hitting the hole at full throttle would be more effective for the Falcons’ running attack. Also, the play-calling has become very routine: run, run, pass. Doesn’t take a genius defensive coordinator to figure out how to stop that. Also, I think that giving Schaub or Schockley an oppportunity to play would definitely light a fire under Vick’s behind. Vick is a good QB, but I believe that he has somewhat become complacent with his position, especially when the Falcons are trailing in a game. Letting him know that his position can be replaced (if temporarily) would possibly give him reason to keep his overall game at a high level. Finally, the coaching of this team could be MUCH better. If what you’re doing in the first half is not working, you must make the proper adjustments to right the ship. This is something that the coaching staff has been failing to do lately, and it shows on the field. Phew, I’m done ranting.

Thank goodness the team is not run by message board, because we’d be a true laughingstock if we followed even 25% of the advice I’ve seen. A couple of points:

  • Vick deserves blame. Unforced turnovers (fumbles especially) are killers, and the one at the end of the game against Cleveland was especially bad.

  • Vick is not a bum. Anyone remember the Carolina game 2 years ago when Vick damn near levitated into the end zone on 4th down to force overtime? He’s had some truly spectacular moments.

  • The margin of error between winning and losing in the NFL is very, very small. Say all you want about Cleveland and Detroit, but they pay their players too. And they both have some real talent. Come out playing poorly, and maybe add in a few injuries, and you’ll get your butt beat, just like the Falcons did.

  • Take a look at the NFC standings. There is ONE team that has fewer than four losses—Chicago at 9-1. Atlanta is 5-5, meaning we’re ONE GAME AWAY from having the second-best record in the NFC (shared with many, of course). I’m upset about our losses too, but geez, don’t you think that this board might be over-reacting?

I say if the offense is as bad this week as the last 3, replace Knapp with Musgrave as interim OC for the rest of the season and then see who we can get for next year.

Not having audibles allowing the QB to change out of bad plays in the offense by now is plenty of reason to fire Knapp, no question.

Get a real recievers coach for next year also. At a minimum and assuming Mora stays.

Coming from a real falcons fan, I hope the birds can pull out a win this weekend because I’m tired of listening to the hatemongers that love nothing more than to see the birds lose so that they can whine and complain like they know something about football. Those are the same people that are the worlds biggest Falcons fans when the team is winning. this is in response to e man blog. eman, it is an insult to me personally when you said ” there was no fan base before vick”, i have been a fan of the falcons since 1979 BEFORE vick got here and will still be long after he left. when you call others ” fair weather fan” you must obviously refer to yourself. in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s in which the internet was not as widely use as it is now, i remember sitting in the lunch room eating lunch and criticized whoever that is quarterbacking the falcons in losses and praising them in wins. i believe a true fans are the one that got elated when the team won and depress when the team lost. a true fan may not necessarily the one that folks over hundred of dollars for the ticket but ones that feel like they are part of the team. those true fans deserve to criticize whoever they feel are not doing their jobs be it the owner, coaches or million dollar qb. african american, please take your collective heads out of your arses and listen to mr bill crosby advice. stop blaming everything on racism and see things for what they are. do you people seriously think that the criticsism of mr vick would remain on these blogs if the falcons became a perenial playoff and super bowl contender? my god, even brady, mannning and farve still got lit up for playing poorly and twp of those have supr bowl rings on their fingers and manning will get his soon enough. last year vick stated that he wanted to be a pocket qb to prove that he can and save his body from all the punishment that he has taken, he got his wish and the falcon flop. this year he said he going to be the same old vick but because the falcon wasn’t scoring enough so he went on tv and states that he wanted to pass more, he got his wish. and now after 3 game losing streak, he states that the team needs to go back to what it does best- running the ball.i bet that he will get that wish too. the problem with the falcon is indeed the coaching staff inabillity to tell vick that this is what it is. go out there and execute or i’ll find some one else who will.please my african american brothers( because we all american), let be objective and be a true falcon fans and not MIKE VICK’S FAN. praise him and look upon him as a god when he wins on a consistence basis. kick his arse when he fumbles or throw int or miss wide open receivers. this is how TRUE FOOTBALL FAN behave. eman, does the name alfred jenkin and alfred jackson mean any thing to you? thought so, you fair weather fan.

For all you racist Vick Haters hears some stats for you, hears the Falcons seasonal records since 1983, 1983=7-9 1984=4-12 1985=4-12 1986=7-8-1 1987=3-12 1988=5-11 1989=3-13 1990=5-11 1991=10-6 1992=6-10 1993=6-10 1994=7-9 1995=9-7 1996=3-13 1997=7-9 1998=14-2 1999=5-11 2000=4-12 2001=7-9 2002=9-6-1 2003=5-11 2004=11-5 2005=8-8 Shocked at those numbers, I know I am as a Falcons fan. These racist fans tend to forget all those losing seasons the Falcons had and if you look closely at those records you’ll see that before 2002 when Vick became the starter the Falcons had 3 playoff seasons, 1991, 1995, and 1998. Vick has already taken the Falcons to playoffs twice in the 4 FULL YEARS HE’S STARTED NOT 6, HE DIDN’T START IN 2001 AND HE WAS INJURED IN 2003. Vick may not not have incredible passing numbers but I know one thing, that Vick has never had a losing season, 2002=9-6-1, 2004=11-5, 2005=8-8, 2006=5-5 in counting. You don’t see a 4-12, 5-11, or a 3-13 on Vick’s resume, you see those records on the white QB’s resume. So after stating the facts, I asked Falcon fans, do you still want Vick gone? Yall probably still do but I know one thing, that since the color of the QB’s skin changed the Falcons team has never had a losing season and the team has always been a contender. HOLLA! GO FALCONS! TO Kansas City Inhabitant

Did you conveniently forget when Vick came in we also got a new owner who has spent big bucks bringing in free agents to fill whatever needs the GM and coaches told him they had. If you go back to the time I became a falcon fan, 1966, there was no free agency to build a team. Did you ever think where this team might have been with a QB who put up decent NFL numbers. I’m sure you remember 1998.

    November 25, 2006 05:27 AM | Link to this

I think Dan Reeves will be back. He may not caoch the team but he will be back. The problem with this team is the O-line. We can not pass block and push people around on short and inches.

Someone mention the 1998 team. If you recall that team had a line and a RB that could get you an inch. We do not have that now. I think McKay has done a great job of finding talent and he needs to stay. Maybe, he and Reeves can work together to build a super team.

If Blank want to win now, he can force Mora and Knapp to run Justin at TB on short yardage and goal line situation. He can force Knapp to allow the FB and TB to block for Vick on the roll outs. This will help Vick shake the spy. Every team in the NFL keep doing the same thing and they is assigning two playesrs to guard Vick.

Blank there is too much talent on this team for them not to be in the play-offs. I think the game against Ravens may have sealed Mora’s fate. I think Blank was upset with Sams having a highlight day against the falcons.

I am glad Blank is talking. It’s good business to show us that he is scrutinizing everything. He’s going to make changes.

I will say this, though… Vick isn’t going anywhere. What Blank is going to find is talent where talent is needed, and Vick has all the talent we need. Vick’s upside is too large and he has a great return on investment. Paying Vick $130 Million was smart, because the Falcons probably made all that money back the first year in his contract. Vick is a money machine.

So, what do I think Blank is looking at?

  • COACHING! All he talked about in his example part of his conversation was Dan Reeves and “bodies of work.” That’s a coaching issue. Knapp will not last the Saints game if there’s no changes. Mora may last until next year, but it is going to get interesting for the coaching staff at Flowery Branch. We need an offensive coordinator that will give Vick the opportunity to audible, and not this current predictable offense that the opposing defenses yell out their plays and they can’t do anything but change the direction (if it’s a running play.) To me, that’s a recipe for disaster and is the main reason why my 8-year old son can predict what the offense is going to do 80% of the time.
  • KNAPP NEEDS TO BE FIRED!

  • Depth. Our starters are great. We look good on paper. But we are lacking depth at every position except linebacker. As an owner, I would be concerned. There will be players traded as a two-for-1 deal.
  • That’s it. No changes needed in any skilled offensive position. Our defense, even though problematic, can be fixed on depth in the secondary.

But I personally believe that you have to have a change at OC. We need an offensive genius to make the Super Bowl. Vick can take us there, but he needs coaching help.

And Knapp ain’t helping Vick, Mora, nor this Falcons team.

Kent, its really nice that you are one of the hundreds of “true” Falcons fans that are so passionate about the team, but the GA Dome seats 73,000 - not hundreds. The Dome is in its 4th season of consecutive sold-out games and contrary to what you want to believe, that’s because of Michael Vick. Even the 98 team didn’t get sold-out crowds for 1999! That being said, Vick is worth every penny and probably more. The Falcons front office has not attempted to invest in an offensive line and apparently the offensive coaching staff has not demanded it. Nope, the fan base wants to see him turn no plays into miraculous plays on each and every down and our coaching staff for some unknown reason, wants to also. Well in every single game this season he has scrambled out of a certain sack and created a play that was straight-up sandlot….because he HAD too. That 4th quarter fumble against Cleveland? I’m surprised he didn’t just pass completely out. The coordinator calls a play for him to run right after he just did, the defense is calling out the play before he is and all he can do is try to figure out something on the fly. No, he shouldn’t have fumbled, he should have taken the ball and aimed it straight at Knapp’s head. Anyone that cannot see our entire team is suffering from lack of coaching is indeed seeing what they want to see as opposed to what’s there.

If Vick prefers to run, then let him start playing running back or H back the way Cordell Stewart did for the Steelers. Put in a more accurate passer (Matt Shaub) at quarterback. This would give you an added dimension by have a running back who is a passer. Trade for Marcus Vick and then you would have a (Vicks) combination (which has cured more than killed). Think of the endorsement possibilities.

    tj:

the best players on the falcons are essentially dan reeves draft picks. DHALL & norwood are really the only notable exceptions. in any regard, every single key player on the falcons has been a draft pick. the free agents have not worked out at all. from peerless to abe, they have been disappointments. warrick is the lone exception from a free agent standpoint. so your argument is silly.

arthur blank is not filling up that stadium. Mike Vick fills that stadium up. I am not saying that is right or that is how we all should behave ourselves but the reality is that mike vick is filling that stadium. Lowering ticket prices and all of the other things has not made a single person want to go to the game. The fact that we drafted a much ballyhooed guy who is the most exciting player in the nfl and that the drafting of the guy coincided with an appearance in the playoffs during the first year Mr. Ballyhoo was a starter is the reason that stadium quickly filled up when vick (and not arthur) arrived. The stadium has stayed filled because Mr. Ballyhoo was 3-1 the next year during the last four games after coming back from a lost season filled with injury. Then the next season, mr. ballyhoo and the falcons go out there and open some whoopass and make it all the way to the conference championship game. we were all foaming at the mouth. Then they start the next season 6-2, and we are absolutely rabid wearing the SUper Bowl Bound collar. But now 2-6, followed by 5-2, followed by 0-3, has us all losing the faith. in Mike Vick we no longer trust. It is starting to reach the point now where the novelty and curiosity around vick is wearing off and we all now are starting to expect consistent performance from vick. SO, unless we start consistently winning and Vick consistently produces, I am afraid we are going to reach the point of diminishing returns with Vick. Even if he still is the QB, i think you are going to see less and less people go to games and that will expose the Mike Vick affect on the sold out stadiums and the games no longer being blacked out on television.

there are many problems with the falcons. they are like a wicked combination of the characters on the wizard of oz. they got no brains, no heart, and no courage. What they do have however is one helluva glass jaw. It is like if you hit the falcons square on the jaw, they go down for the count. There are many reasons for that. Usually the blame goes to the coaches because they are supposed to motivate the players. Coaches do not do that however by giving them heart or courage. No one can give heart and courage to you. If you were not born with heart or courage, you are never going to have heart and courage. No coach is that godlike (sorry, bear bryant). What coaches can give you however is brains. Brains are usually a god given talent as well. BUT, hell, even a special ed student in a contained classroom receiving highly specialized one on on hands on training, can be given much more brains today than the they typically have been able to gain in the past. Thus, it is possible for the coaches to fill this team with brains. But this team has no brains because the coaches have no brains. And i think the team has no heart or courage because the coaches don’t first enable the brains of the players. At first, it is easy for players to be wild, brave, courageous, to have a ton of heart, and to run through a brick wall for a coach BUT then the other teams hit back just as hard and have a better clue of what to do and how to execute, the will of your players is going to be broken. Thus, you need to respond back as a coach by giving the players a reason to believe and you do that through great game planning and through excellent in game offensive and defensive adjustments. that is not happening. the coaches are not stimulating their minds, and as a result their heart is quitting.

this is no more evident over the past three seasons than by looking at, what for me at least, are defining moments in the career thus far of mike vick. Mike Vick essentially has had one game in each of the past three seasons that has let you know that Vick and the rest of the team have quit. In the conference championship game two years ago, do you all remember him all bundled up on the bench in that big stupid oversized coat looking like a little kid hiding from the world and the cold in his big blankie. Do you also remember that last year when the season was going down the drain, vick did the same thing with the coat, the cold, and the bench against the bears? When the temperature drops, Vick quits. he seems to want to click his heels and say “There’s no place like Dome.” And then this year, they have just lost their third straight, the season is going down the drain, and Mike Vick is chuckling away having a knee slapping yuckfest with Ed Reed and Mcnair after the game. No great QB has ever giggled like Vick did after such a terrible defeat. MOntana, Marino, Elway, Brady, Manning, Simms, Moon, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Isiah Thomas, Patrick Ewing, Dominique, Hakeem, Tim Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, Derek Jeter, Roger Clemens, John Smoltz, Randy Johnson, Pedro, Schilling, Maddux, Glavine and all of the great winners and players never found losing meaningful games for the third week in a row amusing. All of them from what I recall stare straight ahead with the determined look of a serial killer. Many of them look absolutely suicidal or homicidal when suffering such a terrible defeat AGAIN where their poor underachieving performance was a big reason for the repeated horrible losses. They surely from my memory never walked off the field or court giggling it up and playing grab a* with the opposition after suffering a horrible defeat. Oh, they will be gracious and do the obligatory handshake but they will have that sick stare working for them the whole time. Do you all remember that game early in the year on sunday night, where tom brady and the pats were really awful and tom brady looked like he was running through the gamut of emotions, from wanting to throw up to wanting to commit a mass homicide/suicide on everyone in the stadium. he looked terribly defeated from an emotional standpoint just like vick should have looked last week instead of prancing nad skipping off the field last week like a giggling little girl.

SO, despite all of the greatness of Vick, the playoffs, and the victories, the sold out stadiums (and yes i do appreciate all of that), to me, for the last four years the defining moments of the season have been the injury, vick being bundled in the fetal position on the sidelines like he was a newborn in crib against the eagles and then the bears, and then his little giggling episode this year after the ravens game. those moments are starting to pile up and are starting to provide an explanation for the inconsistency of the falcons. thus, why they are starting to define the career and wasted potential of Mike Vick.

you can blame the HORRIBLE coaching of mora & knapp all you want BUT vick needs to look in the mirror and ask himself how would a great player conduct himself, what kind of heart would a great player show? Does a great player quit because the coaches are not providing him the brains and the requisite intelligence through game planning to win ball games? NO! Just because your coach is a slimy used car salesman with a fake smile and phony soundbites who wants to pretend that everything is still going great and who uses his Daddy to do his dirty work for him, does that mean that a great QB should follow the lead of the idiot and walk off the field laughing after another terrible loss? Just because your coach is a little punk, does not mean you should be.

Maybe i am very childish but since Jim Mora is being childish with the whole FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! chant last week, why doesn’t he just go and take the childish thing to the limit. You have a bunch of immature players being led by an immature coach. SO, i doubt this happens very much in the pros as opposed to high school, where it occurs all the time: BUT DO NOT LET THE PLAYERS TAKE THEIR HELMETS OFF, DO NOT LET THEM PUT WINTER COATS ON, DO NOT LET THEM EVER SIT ON THE BENCH ON THE SIDELINES. MAKE THE PLAYERS STAND UP, NEVER SIT DOWN, WITH THEIR HELMETS ON, READY TO GO AND BEAT SOME A*, THE ENTIRE TIME THEY STAND ON THE SIDELINES maybe that will take care of some of mike vick nonsense that goes on where he seems to smirk, laugh, bundle up, and just basically lounge on the sidelines in between plays. I can’t imagine that a high school tactic such as refusing to let them take their helmets off and refusing to let them sit on the bench in between plays and series would go over too well with the players. BUT, if you are mora, at this point, do you give a flying you know what what the players want anymore? If i were mora, i would say i have been coddling you crybabies for far too long and enough is enough. It sounds very high schoolish but when you think about there is a very fundamental reason high school coaches kill you with that rule: Because then you will not lose focus and watch second half after second half of games be flushed down the drain due to you lack of focus because you are having too much of a grand old good time lounging over on the bench in between plays and series.

as for the sold out stadiums, MIke Vick is nowhere near as good as michael jordan. But the same thing is happening with vick and falcons. when i was a kid, you had all of these kids at school who would say that they were chicago bulls fans. you would accuse them of being michael jordan fans and not bulls fans and they would pretend and swear up and down that they were really bulls fans and not michael jordan fans. The question today is then: Where The Hell Have All the Bulls Fans Gone? They exposed themselves as Jordan fans, and not Bulls fans. The same is happening here in Atlanta. I highly suspect that even if Schaub or DJ or someone else came in and was the starter and they won 10 games every year, the team would not sell out as much and these blogs would not be filled with so much love, passion, hate, venom, intelligence, and idiotic behavior and words. Vick is the lightning rod. There are too many Vick fans and not enough falcons fans.

with all of that being said, jim mora does have at least one thing right: DIRTY BIRDS YOU NEED TO FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! very cheesy for an NFL coach to chant like that to his players but he is at least right about that they need to FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! they need to go out there and kick the hell out of the saints. they can no longer afford to lose any division games. they need to win all three remaining division games. then they need to win 2 of the other 3 games to secure a playoff spot. BUT you have to win all 3 remaining division games. THis game tomorrow is HUGE!

alright, that is enough verbal excrement for my day

mr. falcon fan since 1966, you do realize that your self proclaimed king of accuracy Schaub has not even completed 50% of his passes in the NFL? probably not. why would you let the truth help you overcome your ignorance. His skin color led you to believe that he was accurate though, isn’t that right? Oh no, no. How dare you accuse me of such things. Conciseness of expression is the supreme art of communication:

People who type in bold letters have inadequacy issues (BirdDawg).

Vick once was a novelty that all great defenses now fear not.

Vick is too short (5’11”) for the NFL.

Vick is not a leader on or off the field (see Romo).

Vick is too dumb to grasp sophisticated offensive strategy and to recognize defensive alignments—this is why he is not allowed to audible (you have to know what you’re looking at in order to select an alternative).

Vick is the fastest NFL QB in history.

Vick is the most inaccurate and fundamentally immature NFL QB in history.

Vick does not step up when needed (see New Orleans, Detroit, Cleveland and Baltimore this season).

Vick is now a “losing QB,” not a “winning QB” (see last 18 games as a starter).

It is past time to end this carnival act and partner a real NFL caliber QB with the best running attack in the game. Stop blaming it the scheme. Knapp has tried everything with Vick and he just aint good enough!

It is also time to recognize that Mora has lost this team as they no longer play hard for him or recognize him as a mature, respectful coach with valid leadership skills. Ask youself this: “would I play hard for Mora?”

damn, yall still under a spell. Blank came right out of his own mouth and said he doenst judge a coach by “his body of work”.??? what the f.. else are you looking at then artie? i told yall arthur is a business man, a marketing juru. i give him props for home depot but that crap is not translating into football. he came right out and said he wasnt looking at dan reaves resume, all the wins, playoff and superbowl appearances, he was looking and listening at the marketing crap that is jim mora’s son. folks, the nfl is just like the rest of life, they are a closed knit bunch of neck owners who are strictly into nepotism. the only reason they got black announcers and coaches is to make it look good. I like Mike Ditka, a white man, who played the game. he said the truth win asked about how steve macnair got dissed by tennesee, mike said, ” i might get into trouble for saying this but the owners have no loyalty to the players”. you can add the fans to that too. they are getting paid folks, they got a monopoly on pro football, look how they ran the usfl out of business. they dont care about me or you and if your team wins, consider yourself lucky, to be honest, SOMEBODY has to win when you break down the law of average. look, 2 thirds of the nfl teams got about the same crappy record because the owners are getting paid whether they win zero games vs going underfeated. wake up and show your disgust at the ticket window. f” arthur blank.

Blank is the problem. He is a business man, not a sportsman. Until he hires some real football people - people who can lead, inspire, mentor, and coach - and then gets off the field and out of their way, Michael Vick, the rest of the team, and our money are going to continue to be wasted.

Arthur, however, still sees himself as the CEO with his fingers on the pulse of everything, so don’t be surprised if he brings in Ernst & Young to tell him how to run things.

g-money you should be hung Mv is light years ahead of you as a human being. with that the basic problem is with the offensive scheme.too predictable we have the talent just need to use it in the right scheme which can’t happen in the middle of the season. so we live with it till next season. we will finish 8-8 again.

    November 25, 2006 09:42 AM | Link to this

    Larry,

If Vick can’t see the defensive scheme and not make a good decision enough to audible is actually a coaching problem.

Also, if Vick is inconsistent in the offense, like making unforced errors and not tucking the ball away is a coaching problem.

And lastly, Vick’s size is an issue and the offensive scheme can’t compensate for it (like Joe Theisman, Otto Graham, Steve Young, and the rest of the “Smaller” QBs) then it’s a coaching problem.

See, as a coach you have to play with the players and know the players strengths and weaknesses. And football is a simple game. A good coach should be able to teach any elementary school graduate how to read defenses and audible. It’s not rocket science. If you cannot teach that person to read defenses, you are not a good coach.

Also, if you cannot come up with a scheme that utilizes great arm strength AND the greatest running ability in the history of the NFL for a QB, you are not a good coach.

If you think that size matters in the NFL and cannot compensate for a smaller QB, you are not a good coach.

Larry, what changes did Knapp do in order to put the Falcons in a good position to win a football game? That “College Option gimmick?” Not giving Vick the option to audible out of a running play into a passing play? Being so predictable on the offense that the entire defense is calling the play before the ball is snapped? What? What did he do to merit his job being secure for one more minute?

In other words, this coaching staff is a laughingstock! People are actually laughing at the fact that there’s the most explosive player ever to be in a football uniform, with a great inside-the tackles runner, and this coaching staff can’t beat Cleveland with them!

It’s pathetic! But what’s even MORE pathetic is that there are so many people that are blinded by the way Vick LOOKS that they can’t see that he is in a system that is crippling his growth and success as a QB in this league.

I wish we had a TO on our sidelines. Not for TO to play, but for him to tell it like it is: That KNAPP sucks and that he needs to go home and be Offensive Coordinator on his Playstation.

    Lawton,

Blank was saying that he wasn’t looking at the complete body of work as a way to tell Mora and Knapp not to rest on their laurels.

Blank doesn’t care about what happened in the past, but he is telling the coaches that if he is to make coaching changes, it will hang upon the success or failure of this season only.

In short, Blank is saying that if we do not make the playoffs, he will be looking for new coaches.

Putting Matt Shaub in as QB and Mike Vick in as runningback/wide receiver is probably the dumbest, most moronic suggestion I’ve ever heard. First of all, just because someone is fast doesn’t allow him to read gaps in the line or catch the ball. Mike Vick is one of the most talented players to ever come in this league and Knapp and Mora have squandered him. With that being said, let’s just win against the saints and get the ball rolling again. Go Vick, Go falcons!!

Michaeal Vick is the best thing that has ever happened to Atlanta sports, period. If he leaves this city, we will look like idiots.

Each one of you geniuses that argue to trade Vick would have said the exact same thing about Barry Sanders. I guesss the reason Detroit never made it to the playoffs was because Barry sanders spent to much time running side to side and losing yards.

You are the same geniuses that wanted to start Doug Johnson over Vick. Look how good he did. And while we are forgeting, answer this.

G-Money, have you no response? Or did the truth I spit out in my last post hit far too close to home for you? Your great granddaddy says he is ashamed of you because you hate black people so much but then still label yourself with the moniker G-Money on the AJC blogs. Your great granddaddy says he raised you so that you would not have to be so conflicted about your self identity and that you would not hate yourself so much and then lash out at others because you can not deal with your own self-hatred while at the same time labeling yourself in a way that lets everyone know that you wish you were the very thing you proclaim to hate. I told your great granddaddy not to worry. G-Money’s just limited from an intellectual standpoint. I explained to your great granddaddy that your intellectual abilities and your physical appearance have been greatly altered because after all you are the inbred son of an inbred son of an inbred son of an inbred son of an inbred son. Great granddaddy feels awful that he did that to you. He explained that’s why he gave you that sexy tractor you like to boast about. If he destroyed your intelligence and your looks, and gave all of those to me, his black grandson, he could at least somewhat make it up to you by giving you that sexy tractor. I explained to your great granddaddy though that it does not seem to work because it seems to be forcing you to go through some identity crisis. On the one hand, you love that sexy tractor and you are honored that your great granddaddy gave it to you. On the other, you know what monstrous things were perpetrated by your great granddaddy on that tractor and you also know that even in his monstrous moments your great granddaddy/my granddaddy gave me the only blood in the family that is not completely contaminated with the inbred blood of your great granddaddy. As a result, you have nothing but contempt for me because I am better looking and far more intelligent than you because my blood is mostly pure as opposed to your inbred blood. You got to get over it man. I get filled with resent too sometimes because your great granddaddy/my granddaddy has somewhat limited my intellectual abilities because after all my granddaddy/your great granddaddy was an inbred son of an inbred son of an inbred son himself. So, the 10% of my blood that is inbred has limited my full potential. BUT at least I am not 100% inbred like yourself. Tell your mother, a.k.a. your aunt, her black nephew Walter sends his regards for a happy holiday season.

P.S. G-Money. You went race baiting and picked a fight. Your glass jaw seems to shatter faster than the glass jaw of the falcons. I hit you back. Now, what is your response, inbred boy. Your loving cousin Walter awaits your response or I will take you off the Christmas card list

The coaching staff will be gone long before Michael Vick, whether he deserves to stay or not. Vick has never had the protection from his offensive line needed to be a successful quarterback. This regime has made the same mistakes the past regime made with Steve Bartkowski, best arm in the league but the worst offensive line to protect him. His career ended after 10 or 12 knee operations. Vick’s career will end soon if the line play is not improved. No matter the athletic talent, a quarterback will not succeed while being sacked 6 or 7 times a game. Better protection or this team is Doomed!

I like Vick and Schaub, but I don’t know enough about Schaub just yet. When Vick is good, man he is really good; but when he is off (receivers dropping balls, inaccurate throws, et al) he stinks. Schaub has played well when he has played, but not enough to determine if he’s much of a quarterback in this offense. He seems to be, but he hasn’t played enough. I say if ATL loses to NO, then Schaub should get the start in the next game. But that will never happen as long as Vick can play. —Kenneth

But it must be Done above all!!!one food for though black coaches in the NFL has the best winning percentage as for current coaches just a though. After watching the first three quarters of the Cowboys-Bucs game I finally figured out what’s wrong with the Falcons: the coaching.

I don’t watch much NFL except for the Falcons but watching Dallas the other day I realized this is what a real professional football team looks like.

The speed the o-line opened holes, the speed the backs hit them, Romo’s perfect fundamentals, the crisp routes and clutch catches by (most of) the receivers (had to dig TO) was amazing if you look at how the Falcons do things. It’s like our offense is run in slow motion. The run plays take forever to develop, the receivers don’t always run good routes, Vick’s mechanics are terrible and we are very predictable. We never know how to make in-game adjustments.

If Vick had more time to throw maybe his mechanics would improve. If the wide receivers got more than one or two balls thrown their way in a game maybe they’d start catching more.

To me it comes down to two things both because of poor coaching: Very bad fundamentals, that includes poor pass protection, bad routes and lack of focus on catching the ball, terrible footwork on passes, too many arm tackles, a ten or twelve yard cushion for the db’s, etc., etc., etc.

The other thing is there is no leadership on this team. How many times have they come out flat? All these things go directly back to the coaching.

Of the top 25 NCAA teams, probably 20 of them are better fundamentally than our Falcons. And as for fire or emotion, even the Lions wanted it more than us.

There is plenty of talent on this team, if we had a coaching staff that knew what to do with it.

Mike Vick is the reason why experts and fans like watching the games.Vick is a great quarterback. He’s no way perfect, but if Vick had some good leadership around him,he could one of the best ever to play the game.Im 100% pulling for Vick to succeed. This is for all the haters,if vick get traded are retire soon,Arthur will probably sell the franchise.Afterward all of us want see the Falcons again.Maybe when we are to old or in another city.

ease up on the racist comments people this is a sports blog. express your opinions about the TEAM however u see fit, but come on people be adults about it. i get frustrated when the TEAM loses but my support never wavers. injuries have depleted our defense i believe thats a major reason for our recent 3 game losing streak. excuses are like u know what everybody has one. every team has to deal with injuries so do we so lets get it together and get prepared for the stretch run. we still have a lot to play for. bandwagoners we can do without you. Michael is a 50/50 man.Half of you hate him and half of you love. When the Falcons win he gets all the praises, and when the Falcons loses he get’s all the blame.I personally think media is the reason for this.Example If the Falcons win a game on defense Vick gets the praise. If Vick play a great game and the defense loses the game for the Falcons,Michael Vick still gets the blame.I guess when you make that much money that comes with the territory. The old saying Damn if you do damn if you don’t.Can’t satisfy everyone.

thank you Will. the reason these blogs turn racist is because anytime a white man spews racism and a black man defends himself, the black man is the one with the problem. f.. that turn the other cheek and take it crap. thats why i dont fool with their bible either. EVERYBODY can see the problem is atlanta’s coaching but they still wanna put it on vick. ok, lets entertain this. Lets pretend its not racism. why was vick WAAY better under reaves than mora? take racism out of it. i dont care what color the owner, player, coach is as long as that person is a man, and mora isnt a man. hes a shuckster. atlanta doesnt have a identity. what are they about? they are not gonna pound you into submission, they cant finesse anyone. the defense, come on, pee wee players can see the falcon scheme are junk. to take it from another poster, what in the world was in mora’s briefcase that had blank so mesmerized. you picked up a defensive coordinator that was fresh off being FIRED. that should have been the first sign arthur. to make things worse, EVERY week, a falcon player gets housed (run over) by and opposing offensive player, embarrassing. even losing falcon teams of past had more heart than this bunch of underachieving, under coached players. and why doesnt mora wear a headset?

People, everyone in the world know what is wrong with the Falcons. Last season, they led the NFL in red zone offense. This season we are at the bottom. Why? We can not run the ball in the red zone. You win in football based on your line. We need to knock people off the ball. We need to be able to form a pocket.

The defense need to stop playing soft zone. We need to find DBs that can man up on people. The soft zone is a defense played against a QB you feel that will make mistakes. Almost every WR that play us this season look like a superstar.

The next coach we need is one that has been through the ranks. He need to have play in the NFL, been an assistance in the NFL, served as a DC/OC. He must have had success at all these level just to make the cut. With that said, Mr. Smith would have beat out Mr. Mora anyday. Rich knows football and let him along pick the new coach.

Hate to say it, but you’ve got to fire Mora. Sure, it’s great to be friends with your players, but he crosses the line in trying to be cool. Anytime your QB calls out the offensive coordinator, he needs to be brought back into line, this is a team and not a one-man show. Mike’s a great talent, no doubt, but in some ways he’s become bigger than the team. He needs traded while he’s still got value and we can get some high picks for him. Mike’s been coddled here (Ron Mexico?). He’s a great draw and is THE best athlete in the league. In fairness to him, he hasn’t been given the O-line, plus he’s had the revolving door on offensive coordinators. But if the team’s going to be improved, trade him for picks, put Schaub in at QB and improve the team!! We want the best team, not just the best player!! I’m a New England fan, and though Belichek is critized for letting veterans go, the team is bigger than any one player. Teams win games…not superstars. Sure, a superstar will get you a win here and there and make plays and Mike has done that, played hurt, etc. But you need a team!!

Enough, it’s all very tired at this point. I love Vick. I hate vick. You are a racist. No, you are a racist. No. YOu. No. You are. I’m rubber and you’re glue whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you. Yo momma this. Yo momma that. Your kin were slaveowners. Yep, that’s right. my kinfolk were slaveowners who owned your kinfolk. Ridiculous. That’s freaking enough. It’s just all so childish. The whole country and world can read this crap.

Can we all agree on this:

Mora & Knapp will be fired by the end of the season.

Vick is not great but he is not awful either. He has just been mostly oh, so what overall for the last 18 games.

This would not be a problem if Reeves was the coach.

Some people, both black and white, on these blogs are racist.

The majority of the people, both black and white, are not racist and are just frustrated with the lack of consistency, improvement, success for the last 18 games and are therefore venting like crazy.

You are not a falcons fan if you think Vick should be moved to tailback or wideout because you can not appreciate the success he has had in his first 2 years as a starter.

You are not a falcons fan if you think that Vick is an infallible God and that all of his and the team’s successes are attributable solely to him and that all of his failures and the team’s failures are not his fault at all.

BLank needs to get off the sidelines.

Knapp needs to get a clue or maybe he needs to have Vick or Dunn go TO on him again.

Mora, Jr. needs to grow the hell up.

Mora, Sr. needs to shut up and stop doing his son’s dirty work for him. If his son really feels that way, then his son should be man enough to say it. Look at Romo, Parcells puts him down to the media every week and in no way has ever pretended to be any player’s best friend. Parcells calls players out without hesitation, except for TO b/c TO is a space cadet. AND I do not think that any coach in the NFL breeds more long term loyalty well after playing careers than Parcells.

We had better never see Vick giggling again after his team gets stomped on and his stat line looks like he barely showed up that day.

Somebody on this team needs to step up and be a leader. Brooking or Lawyer or Alge that should be you. Vick can not be that guy. That is not bad. Just reality. Aikman was not a leader on the Cowboys. He just got the job done.

The Falcons fans better be loud tomorrow and blow that roof off the Dome the same way New Orleans did in September.

    Dirtie Birdie,

Good post. I still say we trade Vick while we can get something good for him, because we have a great QB waiting in Schaub, who knows he doesnt’ have to be the whole team. Did anyone read what Belichek said about Bledsoe coming back from injury and being ready to play, and keeping Brady in instead? He said that he thought the team would lay back and put it all on Bledsoe, and with Brady in, they all knew they needed to step up. That’s what we’ve got. We’ve got arguably the most talented guy in the league, but everyone’s waiting for him to make a play. Who would you rather see? Mike Vick making great plays and the team being mediocre (not Mike’s fault), or having a great team that wins? That’s what New England has. DB, I had the same thought on Parcells. He’s no one’s friend. When the Patriot’s drafted Terry Glenn, who he didn’t want to draft, the GM and owner did, he called him a “she” because he would not practice when he was hurt. He screamed and yelled at Bledsoe. And where did Glenn want to go when Parcells got the job at Dallas? To play for Parcells. Note to Mora, Jr: this ain’t a popularity contest. You are there to win ballgames. If your offensive coordinator can’t cut it, ditch him. Forget their feelings, forget the overloyalty and do something!! Doing nothing is still doing nothing! Trade Vick, get some picks and build this team. Then whether Vick is good or not is no longer the question. It’s is the team good or not? Trade Vick while we can still get something for him. Great player but we need many players!

Forgot, Arthur mortgaged the farm to keep Mike. Note to Arthur: take your lumps and pay some of Mike’s salary when you trade him. Having a winning team will eventually more than cover that cost. Another note to Arthur: rookie owner mistake in giving Mike that huge contract. Though I think Mora, Sr was out of line, Mike can be a coach killer. You love him when he makes those unbelievable plays but then when he’s bad, he’s really bad and he just doesn’t show up, by his own admission. In addition to Mora, Jr growing up, Mike needs to grow up, too. That being said, I bet you Mike comes out tomorrow and has a game for the ages. He seems pretty fired up about Mora Sr.’s comments. Problem is when he has a game like that, he gets hurt because he tries to do too much. Let’s hope he doesn’t get hurt. Then again, if he does, maybe we have a similar situation when Bledsoe got hurt and Brady stepped in. Bledsoe is no where near to Mike, and never want to see the guy hurt, but something’s got to give.

With Abe and Hartwell back on D, this should change the Falcons fortune. Need to apply maximum pressure on Brees or he will shred the Falcons Secondary. Look for the Saints to exploit Rossum on passing plays. More creative play calling, especially on third and short. The Birds will need to be able to run the ball with some success to try and keep the Saints off of the field and control the clock. If Mora and Knapp don’t blow it, the Falcons win in a close one. GO VICK! GO FALCONS!

I think maybe 2 of the problems with the Falcons is this:

  • They have NO offensive line to protect Michael Vick (the same problem as last year - this year has been no better).

  • Special Teams this year has been HORRIBLE!

  • Listen, Arthur Blank sank too much money into buying this team from the Smiths (aka the Clampetts). I sincerely believe he wants a winner with the Falcons, not a tax deduction; however, what I see is that with the current coaching staff - he will not have a winner. He would probably have been much better off in hiring Mora Sr. rather than Mora Jr.!

Injuries on defense have hurt, but the real disappointment has been the receiving corp on offense. Balls have been dropped that should have been caught. Even though Michael Vick is not that accurate a passer, when he DOES hit you in the numbers, you’ve got to catch the ball.

With no real passing attack, teams are able to concentrate on Atlanta’s strong suite, the running game, and that’s why it hasn’t been as effective in recent games.

Trading Vick can’t occur until you first give him receivers who can consistantly catch the ball, with at least one receiver that has breakaway speed, (Maybe Calvin Johnson out of Georgia Tech!).

Who are you going to trade Michael Vick to anyway. If you trade him to an NFC team with decent receivers, it will come back to bite the Falcons when they played that team.

Speaking of “bite”, I’d love to see what former Georgia Bulldog D.J. Shockley would do with the Falcons offense.

Wasn’t the question “Can the Falcons salvage the season?” All we have to do is win 4 games (if we win all the division games left) and we will be in the playoffs. Of course the seaosn can be saved. The way the NFC looks this year, we could win the NFC easily with a strong run in the playoffs.

The main Vick complaints I hear on all the Blogs: 1. Vick is too short, too dumb, throws too hard, too inconsistent, too inaccurate. At any given time any or all of these things might be true. He makes mistakes, but no more or less than most NFL quarterbacks.
    2. Vick doesn’t care or isn’t a leader. Because he doesn’t blow up at heis teamates and coaches on or off the field? Because he projects a positive attitude and calm demeanor at all times? The smae people that complain about him smiling after a losing game will get all in his a$$ like he was Terrell Owens if he was throwing tantrums all over the field. You can’t make anyone have the personality you want them to have. You should be grateful that in this day of irresponsible athletes doing anything and everything under the sun to ruin promising careers, we have a major talent that stays out of trouble and doesn’t give the media too much fuel to use against him when he gets in front of a camera.

The obvious problem is coaching. I say that not only because of how bad the Falcons look when they are losing, but because of how good they look when they win. There have been too many games that these same players have shown that they can perform at the highest level. It just doesn’t make logical sense that they are only talented sometimes. It’s more likely that the games where they don’t live up to that high standard are a result of coaching not putting them in a position to be the best.

This is a good team, waiting for the right direction to be a great team. They have stood by each other through a lot of adversity, and I for one think the real fans are still standing with the team. Unfortunately Atlanta is now full of a lot of fake transplant Atlanta wanna-be fans, who can’t affford NFL ticket so they can watch the team they grew up with. Real Falcon Fans stand up and take back the city from the carpet-baggers!

If there are any serious football fans listening check this out, the problem with the falcons is not Vick! The problem is the offensive scheme!where are the screen passes? how about quick slants? This is a gimmick offense that looks good one game, and sucks most games, much like the infamous Run and shoot crap. Get the guy some first rate offensive lineman that knows how to man up and knock somebody off the ball, not this illeagal cut-blocking BS. And pass protection is a joke!
