Two schools that love to hate each other
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia and Georgia Tech square off again Saturday in a rivalry that has been described as clean old-fashioned hate.
The Jackets are headed to the ACC championship game while the Bulldogs are coming off an upset win over Auburn and trying to salvage a better season.
If you’re a Tech fan, how sweet would a win over the Dogs be? How depressing would a defeat be? Would it ruin a great season?
If you’re a Georgia fan, what would a win over Tech mean? How about a loss?
Lastly, why do Bulldogs and Jackets fans dislike each other? How deep does it go? Among families? Among co-workers at your job?

Tech/UGA, two teams dead last academically in their respective conferences. Yep, that’s something to be proud of.
I guess it’s no surprise when a head coach makes $2 mil/year that he will bend to rules to get some knuckle dragger in college, like sending them to Hargrave or some other Jr college for a year just so they can bring them in as a transfer.
Tech held out longer with this sham, but last in the ACC when you have Miami in there. Jesus….
Maybe they should call the game and send the morons to study hall.

It is always fun to beat the nerds at Tech but it is pretty much expected now every year. Even if the bees did get lucky and win this year, it only happens every 5 or 6 years and then UGA wins many in a row after losing to Tech. The nerds at Tech hate UGA because of jealousy:
Campus Location - Athens, a beautiful college town vs. Downtown Atlanta, where you have to worry about getting shot on your way to class.
Women - Do I even need to explain?
Stadium - Tech has a little high school stadium while UGA has a stadium that holds over 92,000 people.
Fans - Tech sells out home games only when they play UGA or FSU. UGA sells out every game, every year.
Colors - The strong red and black compared to an ugly gold and white.
Mascots - Again, do I need to explain?
Coach - Tech would love nothing more then to have Mark Richt as their head coach instead of the old fart they have now.
GO DAWGS!

Steve it sounds like you haven’t entered the “big” city recently if you think you have to worry about getting shot at in Atlanta near Tech…ummm the housing market in Midtown has become VERY upscale…
Thank you for speaking about things you no nothing about …and proving any Tech’s point about UGA fans.

UGA is a REDNECK School for TRAILOR TRASH!!!! Big difference in Tech and UGA fans. Just look at the redneck in Athens BBQ’n and drinkin’ Bud while Tech fans know the difference between Merlot and Pinoit Noir. UGA grads coach football at high schools in South Georgia….Tech grads go to Silicon Valley to start technology companies. What do UGA grads call Tech grads after graduation??? Nothing, Tech CEOs won’t hire TRAILOR TRASH ILLITERATE REDNECKS!!!!!

You Tech nerds make me laugh! Why are you bringing up a game that is now in the past and means NOTHING when it comes to this game. If you want to look in the past, we can look at Tech losing to DUKE a few years ago! DUKE! My gosh, the worst football team in college history. We can also live in the past and look at how UGA OWNS tech. We can also look at UGA winning at #5 Auburn last week. Forget the past and focus on this Saturday when little tech will lose again.

Steve, the ignorance of your posts almost make me feel sorry for the other UGA students/alumnae/fans that have to be associated with you. Almost. Tech’s loss to Duke was a lot further in the past than the “University” of Georgia’s losses to Vanderbilt and Kentucky. And you’re definitely not going to scare any Tech fans talking about a win over Auburn. With the way your season was going, everyone figured you had to get a break somewhere. I cannot wait to watch cute little Matthew Stafford look as confused as a true freshman with less than half a dozen full games under his belt when Tenuta’s blitzes start coming at him… oh wait, that’s what Stafford is in the first place.
Seriously though Steve, when you have to stoop as low as “our colors are prettier than yours,” you might as well keep your mouth shut and start worrying about how you and your fellow redneck fans are gonna travel to wherever the SEC # 9 Vs. CUSA # 6 Bowl is.
I wonder what the UGA fans’ response will be…. “well at least our quarterback can count to four! lol!” Wow, I’ve never heard that one before. So creative. So original. Seriously, it’s hilarious. Each time is funnier and funnier than the next.

GT Grad, quit the stupid BS.
Tech degrees are solid, and so are UGA ones. Because of the HOPE, both schools are getting top-notch students, and (still) getting functionally illiterate athletes. Tech’s athletes are just as stupid as UGA’s—do you think that the average football player is there for the engineering degree?

Carter you’re getting better without knowing it. Over in Carter’s story about Stafford can take the hits he’s he’ll face Sat. and his comments about thr Tech pass defense were both the rxact reasons that the Dawgs will win. Stafford has shown a remarkable ability to take a hit , get and come right back. The long pass hadn’t come into play untill the AU game and by then the short passing game was working. So, I hope that Tech runs the type of “D”, including the blitzes and pass coverage Carter described. I promise you that’ll play right into the hands of the “Texas Gunslinger’s” take no prisoner attitude.

gordong,
Before you go calling UGA grads illiterate, maybe you should go back to first grade and learn how to spell the word trailer. I would think you’d at least know how to operate your computer’s spell check after your fancy techie education. There’s a reason UGA is the state’s flagship university. It offers a well-rounded education and requires students to be well-read and culturally-involved individuals, rather than insular tech nerds with severe literacy deficiencies.
As for football, this might actually be Tech’s year. If you can’t knock us off this year when we’re already down, when can you beat us? A senior quarterback and players like Calvin Johnson and Tashard Choice SHOULD be able to beat an eighteen-year-old quarterback and an injured offense that was very shallow to begin with. We’ll see if you can actually pull it off. Even if you can, one win in five years hardly justifies the smack-talk Tech fans are spouting off on these boards.

Awww. Poor Alex. Is your calculator stuck up your a* again? Again, it is OK to be jealous over not having a good QB. Everyone knows how BAD Reggie Ball is. Everyone also knows how good Stafford is going to be. He has gotten better and better as the season moved forward. The response will be that we beat Tech, again. Yawn. UGA will be in the Peach Bowl which is not a bad bowl at all! In fact, after Tech loses to UGA and then in the ACC Championship, they will go to a worse bowl then the Peach! I don’t mind UGA going to the Peach Bowl every 5 years or so. All of the other years they play on New Years Day or in the Sugar. When was the last time Tech went to a big bowl little Alex? 1990?

Dawg fans always want to portray Tech as nerds. If you know Tech students, yes they study hard because Tech is a tough school.
Tech fans always want to portray UGA as red necks. If you know UGA students they party hard, wear caps everywhere, and go “huntin” and “fishin”.
Tech graduates go on to Fortune 500 companys. UGA grads go on to small businesses (insurance sales, etc.).
UGA lives and dies by football. Tech fans cheer for football, but they realize the big picture also.
Tech could lose to UGA this year, but could still be in a BCS bowl. Even if Tech loses in the ACC championship, Tech will go to a decent bowl. UGA will go to a pitiful bowl whether they win or lose.
Tech will have a great basketball season. UGA will, as usual, have an average season.
Tech fans don’t care much about UGA fans, except when they get extreme and rude. UGA fans are so extreme they don’t understand why Tech fans aren’t as extreme.
Tech has a tremendous football history. But, we also have a tremendous academic history and basketball history. UGA has nothing but jealousy.

Yeah ‘get over yourself’. That’s what your career counselors to make you feel better about yourself. A degree in leisure studies from Georgia, or an engineering degree from Tech….I wonder who the employers will choose. I judge for myself. By and large Georgia grads I find are a few bulbs short of a marquee. Tech’s a better school, period. You might have football, but who really says Georgia’s on par with Tech….only a Georgia grad. Hell, I got a history degree from tech, after taking courses in calculus, chemistry, and computer science. Just doesn’t compare.

My response is simply this…Just about every Georgia Tech graduate and student that I know is pompous, condescending, bigotted, and socially awkward. So yes, your post-graduate $90,000 salary will be more than my roughly $50,000 or so salary. While there are plenty of redneck Georgia fans who never set foot on campus except for fall Saturdays, there’s plenty of Tech fans who didn’t pass High School calculus. So I’ll continue going to attend my hillbilly school where apparently I’ll end up working at Waffle House, and I’ll have a better college experience than anyone at Tech (including Reuben Houston’s roommates, 100 pounds of felony), and I’ll continue to enjoy your futile attempt at winning a football game every couple of years. And just so you know, I am well aware we lost to Vanderbilt and Kentucky, and I have heard rumors you were playing in the ACCCG (is it on TV?), and yes, you had a shared National Title in 1990. We’re all very impressed. 12 of 15 and counting…

Do they really sell Chitlin’s, road kills and moonpies at the Varsity Jr. in Athens? Do people really a second mortgage on their “live bait” business to pay for a tattoo? Do UGA fans commit insest with their first cousins?

Tech wants to win this game, but if it doesn’t, it can still have a very good season by winning in Jacksonville. Georgia must win this game, else it has had a miserable season - the only salve being the win over Auburn. Bottom line - pressure is, oddly enough, on UGA, even though it has won the last 5. Although most of Dog fans will never admit it, they cringe at the thought of losing to Tech, even for just one year. Let’s get it on.

First off, the only thing in the world I can honestly say I hate is UGA. If I never heard Larry Munson’s voice again it would be too soon. I wish I could give a spelling lesson to every D-O-G fan(sorry it’s not d-a-w-g). Were you too busy working on your family farm to go to the first grade? Now on to football. I would love nothing more than for Tech too crush the D-O-G-S. However, it will be close game. I know the rivalry factor is huge. For the UGA fans who say that Tech should beat an 18 year old quarterback, this is the same 18 year old quarterback you said was “The Second Coming”. I’m sure next year if Caleb King doesn’t rush for 175 and 3 TDs, you will disown him too. The game will be close, but Tech will beat the flea-bags from the University of Satan. Calvin Johnson will be Calvin Johnson…AWESOME! The defense will be swarming and Reggie Ball will manage the offense by handing the ball off to Tashard. Next stop Jacksonville! TO HELL WITH GEORGIA

Well Steve, I’m going to have to agree with you. IF UGA beats Tech, they will most likely wind up in the Peach bowl and will have salvaged their season. But what if, Tech pulls it out? Things will look pretty bleak. The puppies will be 0 for Florida, Tennessee and Tech, on top of losses to bottom dwellers Vanderbilt and Kentucky. It sounds like there’s a little bit more riding on this game than you’re comfortable with. I guess worrying about your football team’s season is a good way to procrastinate for your exam in Principles of Basketball 101 though. I hear it’s a killer.

Basically what it boils down to is when UGA and Tech played for the first time, Tech accused UGA of using hired players. Of course, they’re also mad because their train broke down after this game. It definitley is funny when families are divided. In my family, my six month old niece is already dressing in Georgia gear.
OK, here’s a couple of Tech jokes: 1) The hooker on North Avenue is still a virgin. 2) Tech for the ladies: Where the odds are good but the goods are odd. 3) Why are there trees all around Grant field? A place for the Dawgs to lounge around after they beat Tech! 4) What does a Tech grad say to a Georgia grad? Want fries with that?
One Georgia one from Lewis Grizzard: George and Earl were at the game and saw Uga cleaning himself, and Earl says to George, “Man, I’d love to be able to do that!” George looks over and says “Man, that dawg would bite you!!”

Still, since I’ve been a tax paying citizen of the state of wisdom, moderation, and justice since I was 14, I do have one thing to say: “Go Tech, and to Hell with GEORGIA!” I keep hearing how hot the women are at UGA, please… To paraphrase a famous movie: Drunk, passed out, and bent over a couch is no way to go through young lady! And by the way, one look at USC’s cheerleaders on Saturday makes all the rest cheap imitations of youthful beauty… Luckily I like my women and employed… Well that eliminates of the UGA women.. UGA women equal living off her husbands alimony check… And why do I hate the Bulldogs so nuch? Three simple names: Eugene Talmadge, Richard Russell, and Tony Flanagan say it all… Why don’t all of you GOD ALMIGHTY Dog fans ask Flanagan what the UGA degree was worth, give Old Pulpwood Smith a call too… A flagship state University, what a joke…

I’m a Georgia Tech fan and am proud of it. But I do have a few things to point out/ask:
Both schools have great football tradition. Moreover, while Tech is ranked as a better school, UGA has certainly improved over the past decade and certainly will continue to do so in the future.
However, I would be remiss if I didn’t add THWG!

Trying to predict what Saturday’s game will hold? Just imagine last year’s Sugar Bowl. Only this time there’s no DJ Shockley to put together a futile comeback team to make it interesting…. which is kind of sad. The fake punt at the end of that game was hilarious, just because of the priceless, stunned looks of confusion on the UGA fans’ faces.

HA HA! get ready to get your a*’ whooped. Calvin does not a team make……..and Reggie has sucked for 4 years. His last game aint gonna change anything. So funny to see the techmites so cocky in there one up year….due to a weak ACC. Uve still got a 7-5 team posing as a 9-2 team cuz the best of the ACC is down and the rest of the ACC sux. So enjoy it this year, reality for you in the ACC and in the football world will be back soon. 9-2 Coastal Division Chumps indeed…..and ranked #16 should tell you how the sports world sees and really thinks about your Team. Reality Check Techies.

And you still can’t buy a sense of history there Johnny Vaught JR., how’s Jane Kemp these days? Oops, didn’t mean to call out Odell Thurman and Freddie Gibson like that… Here’s one that my best friend who’s a UGA grad loves to tell about being a minority at UGA (Lily-white U): Two young men are working across campus with there G lettermen jackets, and a middle age maternal lady walks up to them and says: boy, my grandson is living in the KA house and his yard cut, can you ask Coach Dooley to send over Tony Flanagan and Odell Thurman to come over wash his car!” The young men look in amazement, but they say yes Mam, the lady leaves. They suddenly realize, “Man Barbara Dooley must still think we are “Dooley’s Other Dawgs!” By the you bigot, my UGA grad friend throws his UGA Foundation letters in the trash, and he married a girl I introduced him to FROM MICHIGAN!!! mikegadawg, ummmmm, are you serious? Really. Are you? You’re going to taunt GT about not showing up to games and looking bad? Okay.
Well if we bring the Tech team that lost to UNC and Clemson, I still like our chances if UGA brings the team that played Vanderbilt. Or the one that lost to Kentucky. Or the team that took the Boulder Middle School JV squal down to the last play. Or the team that turned the ball over 5 times against Mississippi State. Or the team that couldn’t even muster 250 yards of offense against an Ole Miss team that boasts wins over Vanderbilt (which, granted, must be a pretty good team since they beat y’all, right?), Northwestern State, and Memphis. You may have won the past few games in the rivalry, but I’m sorry, this is NOT the year to be talking smack before the game.
The ACC may be down this year, but I’m pretty sure even the North Carolina schools can hang with Vanderbilt and Kentucky. You beat Auburn good for you. Otherwise I have a feeling this blog would be awfully quiet.

And i wonder if UGA sneaks back in the top 25 after they beat Tech this weekeend? And would that make UGA ACC Coastal Divison Champs by default?? Alex, do u follow sports? no one at UGA has said we’ve been playing great……3 QB carouel didnt help out early on in the season and we’re playing a freshman QB…..sure we’re gonna struggle early on. But what’s Tech’s excuse?? All Im saying is TECH sux and is way overrated (even at #16). And the only reason you’re in any position to brag is because the ACC really sux. Uve got a 7-5 team and u know it. And uve got a senior QB. And it isnt just UGA(me) saying it dude……uhh, once again, u are 9-2 and coast division champs and ranked #16. now read this part….that means all the sportswriters and coaches voting dont think TECH is that good. That’s not me saying it…..it’s just me agreeing. reality check dude. For example, uve got a 9-2 LSU ranked #10….and they’re not even SEC WEST Div CHamps, that title belongs to #5 ARKANSAS. ACC Champs, Tech might beat us this year (if Reggie Ball can overcome himself), but beat us 5 in a row? Don’t think so. Tech’s not consistent enough to even beat Duke 5 in a row & the Dawgs will have some pretty good teams over the next few years. If Tech’s going to get us it better be this year - I don’t see Stafford getting anything but better in the future & we will have more depth after this year.

This stuff is all so unreal, I had to quit reading halfway through.
The first thing I never understood was Tech trying to redeem itself from the past 15 years of futility by talking about “the bigger picture” and “who goes where” after graduation. We’re talking about a football game and two football programs here. What in the holy hell does average post graduate salary have to do with any of that?
But if you want to go that way, I’ve been to and soon enough will have graduated from both schools. Both have far more than their far share of idiots in class. Both have their fair share successful graduates and utter failures. It’s great to say that all Tech grads move somewhere and start great companies, but frankly, I don’t personally know any that have. And in the meantime, Georgia graduates basically run the state of Georgia, so some of them must be doing ok.
I would think we all have to admit that, by virtue of its liberal arts as opposed to purely technical nature, Georgia offers more degrees that don’t lead to high paying jobs, but that doesn’t mean they’re not fulfilling to certain people.
And let’s please not act like Georgia and Tech athletes aren’t basically the same people. Tech football players are not taking ChemE classes, I can promise you that. They’re all hanging out in management, which leads to jobs in??? So, everybody’s on pretty equal footing there. A certain percentage of players at both schools are intelligent and get jobs conmensurate with their intelligence after graduation. A certain percentage, although a much larger one at UGA, go on to play in the pros. And a certain percentage fade into nothingness and end up coaching football back in their hometown or less savory things we won’t name. It’s the nature of life.
In the meantime, all that matters is on the field, which is 12 out of 15 and 5 in a row. That’s pure numbers, and those numbers say Tech really has nothing good to talk about right now. And perhaps even more telling is the fact that we’re all pretty much forced to admit that this game is a toss up, during Tech’s best season since at least 1998 if not 1990 and possible UGA’s worst season since ‘96.

Really Mikegadawg? GT is ranked 16? Wow. I had no idea. I guess I really was just talking out of my a**…..
C’mon, give me a break. I KNOW Tech isn’t considered among the top tier of the nation this year. I’m not talking about Tech making it to the NCG. I DO read SI. I know, maybe you’re surprised. While being able to read is a goal upon graduation at UGA, it’s actually an ability that’s expected upon admittance at Tech. My point is only that Tech is superior to UGA this year because they’re terrible. That’s all.

Ga Tech is POSITIVE on high school QB recruits from the state of Georgia.

As an Alabama Graduate and fan, I know college football. Every year it’s the same old thing, Tech talking trash to Georgia until the game is played on the field and then they have nothing to say. I have attended the last two GA/GA Tech games, and I have noticed how immature Tech fans are after their annual loss to Georgia. Each year I have seen the same old thing, Tech fans yelling out scores of the one or two games Georgia lost that year. Tech fans seem to forget so quickly that they just lost to Georgia again. I also noticed last year that all the Frat Boys were talking trash trying to start fights with the Georgia fans as they were walking back to tailgate spots, and would then run inside of the fraternity house and close the doors. Now I see why everyone calls these fans NERDS! Thank God these horrible fans are no longer in the SEC.

Oh screw all the UGAg fans. They are so bitter about their season that they have to claim they will crush Tech. Who cares about the past? By the way the records weren’t vacated! Read the paper pups! They can also claim that this isn’t a rivalry because they always win. We do have to live and work together so this is a huge rivalry. If and that’s a big if Tech somehow loses to UGAg, it won’t ruin the season as they have much to play for after the game.
A victory would be oh so sweet just to shut them up for a year because they are incessant bullies in victory and sore losers in defeat! Go Jackets and I hope they whip some dog tails this weekend! Oh and I’m a recent Tech grad and would rather beat UGA than any other team on the schedule! Go Jackets!!!

This “rivalry” is a joke. Georgia Tech is a school of one-dimensional, bug-like nerds not even worthy of dislike. The 20 seconds that I’m taking to write this has taken more of my time than any other thought I’ve ever given them. I’m sure the little techies hate the Dawgs, as seething jealousy saturates every iota of their being. The Dawgs are everything the gnats wish they could be. The extreme depression caused by the bugs’ lots in life, especially compared to the Dawgs, manifests itself in a severe inferiority complex. Go ahead and deal with it, it won’t change. Actually this could turn out to be a good game depending on which teams shouw up. As someone stated if Reggie shows up in the fetal position, winner DOGS, hands down. C.Johnson has got to have someone capable of delivering the ball for him to give the bugs a chance. One of the things I find interesting (if not amusing) is the incredible amout of U(sic)GA fans that have never set their their behinds in at least one chair in a U(sic)GA classroom. The overwhelming majority of Tech fans are either current students, graduates/alumni or parent(s) of one of these aforementioned groups. To be a true fan of any NCAA team means to have a personal affiliation with the said team other than that of a wonton desire to sport a red and/or black and/or white and/or silver G on the front or back of your pick-up or on your person. Just because you can relate to the cows in the pasture just out-side the classroom, dormitory, fraternity/sorority house, party-hall, chicken coop or barn you’re sitting in, doesn’t place you in association with the team! Therefore, if you fit the above profile, me thinks that NASCAR would better suit your sports-affiliation profile rather than one of an NCAA Academic nature that you never had the desire or fortitude to assimilate in! After all, that is what institutions of higher learning are for!!!! Right?

To be a true fan of any NCAA team means to have a personal affiliation with the said team other than that of a wonton desire to sport a red and/or black and/or white and/or silver G on the front and/or back of your pick-up or on your person. Just because you can relate to the cows in the pasture just out-side the classroom, dormitory, fraternity/sorority house, party-hall, chicken coop or barn, doesn’t automatically associate you with the team! Therefore, if you fit the above profile, me thinks that NASCAR would better suit your sports-affiliation profile rather than one of an NCAA Academic nature that you never had the desire or fortitude to assimilate in! After all, that is what institutions of higher learning are for!!!! Right?

“Buck”, is it true that Cox is moving back home and heading to UNC in December?
If you can, get back to me by this afternoon on the UGA QB’s starting in the NFL now. I will say the Falcons should put DEEJ in at QB to show Vick what a play action pass route looks like without the WR having to break stride.
Thank you!

mr. dickenbutt…while there’s only one georgia qb on an nfl roster right now (David Greene SEA), where are all these distinguished Tech players under center in the league? did George Godsey suddenly take Peyton Manning’s job? In fact, if you can give me 10 former Tech players that are in the leage off the top of your head (no wikipedia) then I’ll be very impressed. I’m pretty sure there’s at least 10 former UGA players that have been Pro Bowlers in the league.

I’m so surprised - jokes about Tech’s women, grad. rates, stadium and fans - though I didn’t expect anyone to sound sincere. Have any of you UGA fans been INSIDE the perimeter? Well, here we go:
Georgia fans must find Tech women unattractive since they don’t have mattresses strapped to their backs. After all, Georgia fans don’t have to pass many pastures on 316 to find a good time.
Bobby Dodd’s capacity is at 55k. Despite being 1/3 the size of UGA, we still managed to sell out all but two home games. With a smaller ratio of underclassmen/graduates/redneck fans to seats, its mathematically harder for Tech to fill its stadium - yet we still do anyway. Sorry if I hurt your heads with math, maybe I can find Coach Harrick to ‘splain it…
While admittedly Tech will manage to graduate a few “socially awkard uber-geeks” that doesn’t detract from the fact that we are among the top 10 public schools in the nation. I’ve had engineering firms tell me they don’t care what my GPA is, as long as I have a Tech diploma. Now thats cool.
Tech has just as much if not more a football history that UGA. Despite the series record (I’m only a little bitter), you’ll never shame Tech fans with our football program (despite our a 3rd rate QB). And why in the same breath do dogs fans mention our loss to Duke, downplay their Kentucky/Vanderbilt farce and say that past losses don’t matter? I mean.. what?
:D Said my peace. Now lets revive this rivalry of clean, old fashion hate. Go Jackets! Beat the Daaawwwgs[drool].

An interesting stat that a ‘ranked’ Tech has never lost to an ‘unranked’ Georgia…until now. An important side-bar to the game that will be discussed in Sunday’s paper is that the team that finished fourth in the SEC East will have handily beaten a team that will be playing for the ACC championship…and frankly, that pretty-much sums up the difference in the two conferences.
Forgetaboutit Tech. You won’t be beating the Dogs again in your lifetimes, so just move on and remember, there’s always basketball…then again, maybe not.

I would love to see the Jackets sting the pups, but if I had to choose between a win over UGA and the ACC title, I would take the ACC title. Of course I believe the Jackets will win both. I think UGA has turned it around a little with Auburn win, but I don’t think that game will be an apples with apples comparison. Auburn is good, but the Jackets are better. ( Tech 27 - UGA 16 )

Hey TechGrad
Here are some more interesting notes from the Princeton Review you failed to mention: What Tech Students Say about the Student Body: Student Body Students claim that “Tech is broken down into two different types of college students. First you have the ‘typical’ college students, who take their academics seriously, but who enjoy being social, going out on weekends, and interacting with the rest of the student population. Then there’s the group of ‘Techies’ who are sometimes socially awkward and who like to stay in their rooms a lot and only interact with others like them.” The guys here bemoan a “70:30 male-to-female ratio, but” optimistically declare that “the ratio is getting better.” “A large international student population” also gives the “student body as a whole something extra.” And those who have found their talents to be liabilities in the past will be pleased to learn that at GT, “unlike at high school, no one looks down upon you if you know the entire periodic table, if you can do differential equations, or you can speak three languages; rather, you are respected.”

Title - good point. I am not a Tech Grad. My Grandfather was, but I never came close to going to Tech, but I have loved the Old Gold and White since I was old enough to play PeeWee football and pull for the Jackets on Saturdays. Tech or UGA fans have no right to question my fan ?quality? or otherwise. I stuck with my Jackets through 1-10 and 11-0-1 and everywhere inbetween. I take my abuse from UGA fans and dish out my own back at them. And I love every bit of it. Now there are fans of both who are clueless and fly-by-night but there are many of us non-grad fans that bleed the colors to the core! That being said, thank god there are some fans of Tech and UGA that have some knowledge of what they are talking about, and don’t spew useless Bllhit. So I take it telling someone that you’re going to throw them off the side of Samford stadium when Joe Hamilto beat UGA shows class, or how about a group of UGA fans making my 8 year old nephew cry because he was wearing a tech jersey and called him an idiot. I graduated from The University of Georgia in 2004 and I must say that the Tech fans are not giving UGA students enough credit. The SAT average for incoming students my freshmen year was 1220 and my SAT score of 1360 and G.P.A. of 3.9 actually made me one of the lesser qualified of the roughly 10% or so student body in the Honors Program. But to football…All of the pressure needs to be on Georgia Tech this year. Georgia Fans, let Tech talk trash and lets just keep our mouth shut until after the game. We have not had a great year but we have bounced back strong with a quality win over Auburn and if we can beat Tech our year we will have had a decent year. As for Tech’s year thus far, the verdict is still out. Tech’s only quality win is at Virginia Tech(17th in the country). They also played Notre Dame tough, but Notre Dame’s only win against an opponent that is currently ranked is against Tech so there is not telling how good they are. Tech also got spanked by what seems to be a marginally good Clemson team. If Tech can beat UGA, they will have had a good season. If they come to Athens and lose, however, they will have had a disappointing season.

First of all, as a 2006 grad of UGA, I’m wondering where all the inbred rednecks were when I attended the school. About 75% of the student Body is from Suburban Atlanta. Sure there are students from small towns, but Tech has these students also. They just are not as numerous at a school with 11,000 students. Second of all, both schools are hard to get into because of the Hope. I assure you the student body of both institutions are not retards. Third, everyone should stop arguing about how either school is better than the other academically. Some people are not cut out for (or don’t want to be) engineering majors, just like some people could not be Journalism, Business, or Law students. Both schools graduate competent, well educated individuals. Our great state is lucky to have two excellent schools. That is all I’m going to say about the schools, because this is a sports blog. I have been spoiled by my time at UGA, with two SEC Championships and zero losses to Tech. All I have to say to my fellow Dawg fans is, if Tech and Reggie “nice call” Ball actually pulls out a win against us, keep it in perspective. For us, it would be a sad ending to a down year, but the future of our football team is very bright. For Tech, this is do or die time. They have nothing to look forward to football wise, so while a loss to Tech is always depressing, it will probably be another five years before they have the talent to beat us again. Anyone who thinks the pressure is on UGA in this game is insane. Gailey goes from ACC coach of the year candidate to right back on the hot seat if he loses to CMR again.

FACTS ABOUT UGA FOOTBALL
UGA doesn’t care about Tech anymore. Our rivals are UF,Auburn, Tenn,LSU, and etc.
Half of Tech’s fans did not even know who Reggie and Calvin were until this year.
Tech fans are frustrated because they can’t say “At least our players make better grades…” anymore
Tech had to sell 3 game ticket packages including a game like Notre Dame or UGA to get people to buy additional tickets.

TechGRAD, You are a sad, sad excuse for a fan but fit the Yech stereotype to perfection. This is a discussion about the upcoming game, not academics. Alluding to academics (typical of Techies), is just a poor attempt to make yourselves look better than UGA in something but you are just grasping at straws. The sad reality is you are discussing apples and oranges because Tech cannot come close to competing with UGA in most of its non-engineering degrees because they don’t have these schools to begin with. Do you have a law school? Nope. Do you have a journalism school? Nope. Veterinary School? Nope. Agriculture? Nope. Public Relations? Nope. The list goes on and on.. Contrary to Techie popular belief the World does not revolve around engineers… And by the way, I don’t look down upon Tech fans I have met in the past who never set foot on campus with books in hand. Get over yourself, loser!!!

I got sick of reading these comments about half way down the page as most were nothing but name calling, factless (or with meaningless facts) word spewing.
This game has the rivalry it does because both schools (being only 90 miles apart) draw not only from the same athlete base, but also the same student base. Friends (and teammates) from the same high schools go different ways and like to perpetuate the rivalry. Same holds true of graduates and other fans (although most non-grad fans belong to UGA). They tend to work together at the same companies and live in the same neighborhoods. To say one school is better than the other academicly is naive, at best. They each have their strengths.
UGA should have better sports programs due to one FACT. The school is over three times the size of Georgia Tech and more UGA grads end up working closer as opposed to tech grads that end up more widely spread out due to the technological nature of their degrees. I have lived out west for many years in a few different places. I find it very interesting that I have come across just one UGA grad in that time as opposed to about 15 Tech grads. UGA has the third highest revenue base to support those sports programs in all of College football. It’s facilities should be better, it should be able to pay coaches more and, therefore, get the better recruiting classes. Indeed, it has gotten the better recruiting classes year in and year out, yet still manages to struggle and have “rebuilding” years. Given the resources at it’s disposal, UGA should never have “rebuilding” years.
With all that being said, the games are usually close (with a few exceptions). This will be the first year in many that I am actually getting to attend the game with some friends. Their family, like mine, will have the wife in red and black and the husband in white and gold. Their family, like mine, will have one son in each of the garb. Just another testament to the nature of this rivalry.
Who will win…I don’t know, but I sure hope it’s not the home team.
Go Jackets !!!

Hey Mayretta_Dawg…your intelligence is evident in your screen name. The reason we don’t have those colleges is because we were founded as as an INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, moron. UGA is a liberal arts university, so of course it offers degrees in those areas. That doesn’t mean they are necessarily good colleges. And as far as I can tell, our college of management FAR outranks yours. Boy, I sure love getting you all riled up day after day after day!….

Hey Dawg fans. What happens to all of those all world super 100 five star recruits you guys get every year? Yeah UGA dominates the series with GT but what do you ever do nationaly. The fact is your program is just mediocre. Last title was 1980. You like to brag but what do you ever do besides get beat by KY, and Vandy. A Big East school made you look like the farse of a program that you are by blowing you out in front of a national TV audience. Its sad that all you have going for your school is a sub par football team. Do you even still have a basketball program??

TechGRAD, wasn’t this a debate about football? How did it turn to academics?? Oh that’s right, academics is your only ammo because you have lost to GA 5 straight years, UGA owns a comfy edge in the series & your football program hasn’t won a conference championship in like 16 years. By the way, GA won the SEC just last year. Yeah, we probably won’t go to a good bowl this year, but look at Tech’s bowl trips the last 5 years. Didn’t you guys lose in a bowl last year in like Idaho on December 18th?
When was the last time that Tech has had a shot at a football title? The SEC is by far superior to the ACC in football, and athletics for that matter. Just for sh*ts & giggles, go compare the overall atheletic programs of UGA & Tech. There is no comparison…..See for yourself who has won more conference championships & national championships last year in all sports.

Since we are dwelling on past memories, my mind wanders back to 1990…coached by Bobby Ross—who was the unanimous choice as 1990 national coach of the year—the Yellow Jackets won only five games total during the two previous seasons. After entering the 1990 season unranked in the national polls, the Jackets ended the year as the only undefeated team in major, or division I-A, college football. Wait, when was the last time UGA had an undefeated season??? I forgot.

Hey BBJacket,
First of all, we didn’t get blown out by a Big East team. We lost 38-35, and last time I checked, a 3 point loss is not a blowout. West VA would have beaten Tech last year by 60 points. That game that you’re referring to was the Sugar Bowl, which is a BCS game. BCS games usually have a tendency to gain a program some national exposure. We were also in the Sugar Bowl in 2002 when we beat FSU.
What has Tech done nationally?? If our program is mediocre then I guess all other SEC programs are just downright bad. UGA has won more games & more SEC (East & outright) titles than any other SEC school this century. Get your facts straight before you blog. Now run along to the bathroom with your Victoria’s Secret magazine.

Hey TechGRAD, if I remember correctly, GT had to settle for a co-championship with Colorado in 1990. Also, you didn’t outright go undefeated given your record was 11-0-1 (a tie doesn’t go in the win column). The last time Tech was undefeated in a season (no ties or losses) was 1952!

Harold….Sec not turning out enough QB’s for you….Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Jason Campbell, Jay Cutler (very soon), One of those is the best in the league. Now moving on to GA quarterbacks. Eric Zier took some snaps Frank Tarkenton. D.J. Shockley is probably better then Vick at least Shock can throw the ball accurately. So lets talk about Yellow Jackets that qb’ed in the league. When I say league I mean NFL not AFL. The fact of the matter is Tech has lost four games in a row. FOUR games. So when Georgia wins on Saturday does that make us the ACC champ? Providing of course TECH can beat WAKE. The whole Georgia has redneck fans. Does not make sense to me considering Jeff Foxworthy is a Tech Grad. You know of the might be a redneck fame.

THIS IS A SPORTS BLOG! I hate when people bring up a shared title from 16 years ago. Our starting quarterback was 2 years old when that happened (For that matter, the Herschel years aren’t relevent either Dawg fans). Tech fans, we are well versed in your academics. Not everyone wants a career in engineering, so some of us decided to attend UGA, get over it. Since we are on a blog in the sports section, let’s stick to that. So taking away your 1990 National Title and academics, what have you done in the last couple of years that warrants any kind of confidence? 5 straight wins for the Dawgs, 2 SEC titles in 4 years, and several top 10 finishes (I don’t feel like looking up the exact number). Like I said, I am going to keep my mouth shut and let Tech fans talk more trash than they ever have before. As a Tech fan I will say this. I have never heard so much mindless trash talk from both sides. I look at it this way. UGA has dominated us as of the past five years. Tech has been on and off stagnant since 1967. Both schools have accomplished the same in that time period, except UGA owns the series with us. Both have 1 national title and should be right about even w/ conference titles after this year.
Neither school really has done anything GREAT lately on a national scale. Dawg fans want to knock the ACC being down this year. Does that take away if GT wins it? What about the mushy SEC East the past few years. Does that take away their past two.
Some people just don’t know football, but I will say that win or lose this weekend, GT had the better season and will go to a better bowl. UGA might win, but all of the UGA trash talk is the fear that they very well will not take this one from us. I don’t care what they say, IT WILL HURT for a whole year for them!!

Funny how all Tech fans talk so tough on the INTERNET. The four games are the last four games the Reggie “the AFL is waiting on me ” Ball has started. But I guess its hard for us Georgia fans to get excited about a season that will see us playing in a major bowl since 1990. Its hard for us to understand how we can claim the ACC title with the season the ACC has had this year. I mean the games we lost were very hard for us to swallow. Vandy is not the powerhouse that the Stanford’s and Furman’s of the world are. I mean fortunately for us we do not have those powerhouse’s on our shcedule. We always have to play the #4 Florida’s and the # 15 Tennesee’s and #5 (at the time) Auburn’s….and I know you guys have beaten Auburn twice (yada yada yada). So I can see why a Tech fan would be so excited to see there team going to a game against the powerhouse that is Wake Forrest. I love the way Tech schooled clemson this year. Boy they really took it to them. Those two running backs Clemson had what they were held for less then 100 yards a piece. Lets not even talk about that blow out win againist UNC. I mean that UNC team is a tough tough team. And to put up 7 points on the board wow. Now before you go bringing up Vandy and Kentucky I will be the first to say as a Georgia fan I was embrassed. But that happens what every 15 years.Kind of like Tech playing in a big Bowl game. So after Saturday when Georgia slaps them little girls from North Avenue around it will almost be like Tech losing to Vandy and Kentucky. I go back to wondering if by default we will be the ACC champs.

And you’re right, #2 doesn’t count as a National Champions, but it was still fun to be in the game. You wouldn’t know that, though. I’ve thrown plenty of facts out there that can’t be disputed, but as a typical UGA fan, you are blind to them since you seem to think you sit on top of the world. Like I said, that’s ok; having an over-inflated ego is pretty much par for the course in Athens.

TechGrad, the reason that we’re cocky is that we have beaten you guys 5 years in a row. What’s amazing to me is how cocky you Tech fans have become. Also, I never applied to Tech as I chose to go to a school that had good academics plus hot girls, and fun things to do on the weekends besides sitting at home & looking at a textbook. I never wanted to go to Tech & never had a desire to be an engineer. I make a comfy living, and have a pretty wife….life is good.
The last time that we had an undefeated (regular) season in football was 1982. You see, we play in a conference that is vastly superior to your own. One where competition is so tight that it makes it very hard to come out at the end of the year undefeated. As far as basketball….OK, OK, OK Techie!! You got me there!!!! Didn’t we beat you guys in basketball last year? Compare the 2 athletic programs & you’ll see that UGA’s is vastly superior. It’s a fact.

UGA has finished in the top 10 in the national ranking the last 4 years. So if you want to know what we do with our high ranked recuits there it is. While you were playing in the BLUE BOWL we were playing on New Years day. GAteCH last 4 years…not even in the TOP 25…THATS NATIONAL not backwoods.. It hurts don’t it.
When you lose to UGA and your ACC championship you will be out of the top 25 again. It OK you will be 9-4 just like the dogs. TECH is GA’s B#H! We own you nerd’s.

BBJacket, the last name is Shabadoo, you douche bag. You shared a national title 16 years ago, and you Tech geeks will hang your hat on that for the next 100 years. By the way, the backwards, no teeth having, sister marrying SEC Champs will ALWAYS beat the lowly ACC Champs.
I thought all you Techies were good at math. In football 3 points does not equal a blowout. 51-7 does, however, equal a blowout. I’m sure you know the score that I am referring to. Sure, we went down, but fought our way back in the game. We never quit, and that has been a trademark of CMR teams. Actually had a chance to possibly win the game if it hadn’t been for a fake punt. Oh well, I’m not going to lose any sleep over it.
Now run along to your one bedroom apartment, and catch that episode of Star Trek that you have been dreaming about all day. I’ll let you know how the chipmunk hunting goes, and how good YOUR sister tastes.

GA Grad, congratulations on your great life. I hope your wife knows she’s married to an absolute a*. And by the way, I’m an engineer, and a GIRL (gasp!), and contrary to popular belief I am not ugly or fat, I have a great Tech grad husband, and I actually LIKE being a nerd. Football’s fun, but it doesn’t pay the bills. Osama: you are an IDIOT. ” We always have to play the #4 Florida’s and the # 15 Tennesee’s and #5 (at the time) Auburn’s.” You lost two of those three games. How does that prove your point? And by the way, NONE of the following makes any sense: “But I guess its hard for us Georgia fans to get excited about a season that will see us playing in a major bowl since 1990.” You’re the reason UGA fans have the reputation they do.

Techmites: while your school might be ranked just a bit higher (and I do mean just a bit, look at the rankings), UGA has superior programs in just about every area outside of math and engineering. Being able to plug numbers into a formula does not an intellectual make. If you would stop ridiculously acting like UGA is a vocational school, you might realize that this is about FOOTBALL. To those TECHmites who feel that they are more classy, sophisticated and cultured, remember this: class is not what you drink, eat, or wear. Barbeque, fried chicken, peanuts in coke, and bourbon—these are all a few examples of a multitude of things which are uniquely southern. They have much more actual cultural significance than the wine that you think is good because someone told you about it. If you would remember where you are, and stop insulting southern culture through your pompous pinot stained teeth, you might realize: This is about FOOTBALL.

There are a lot of angry people here.
Some are drunk, some are lonely. Most are projecting way too much of what they hate about the world onto these two very good schools.
There’s more to Tech than engineering, it just all happens to be based around Science and Industry.
And UGA’s no longer a hick agricultural school for the state’s white and privileged.
I mean you can’t be black and not an athlete, but you can be other types of people. (3% of 38k)
At the end of the day, there’s very little difference from the hippie, goth kids on College Avenue and the occasional homeless dude on W. Peachtree.
As for football, Tech’s going to have to play as well as it played at VPI, and the coaching is going to have to better than at Clemson.
My question is will Georgia play well if Tech doesn’t turn the ball over, b/c that seemed to be the key to the Auburn game. I don’t really remember how the Tenn. game got out of control.

The cow and agriculture school stereotype is actually pretty funny. I mean we have a pretty big Poultry Science department… last time I checked that had nothing to do with Cows…I know Athens isnt Atlanta, but it has is one of the most populous per square mile of any area of Georgia. I guess engineers consider anything not having to do with technology as “cow and agriculture” related. And here I thought I was getting a Law Degree from one of the finest institutions in the Southeast, when really I was getting a degree in Cow raising. I guess I should go to Law School at Georgia Tech… Oh wait, now I remember, Tech does not have a law school… Stop Stereotyping, it makes you sound more uneducated than the people you are trying to blast.

After reading 50+ of the comments, I’m glad I’ve matured past the emotional level of most of the people on this blog. The last two Ga/Ga Tech games I’ve been to have been the worst display of fan sportsmanship I’ve ever seen. Everyone was drunk and the language in the stands resembled a Die Hard Film. I would have been ashamed to have been wearing either gold or red that day. Green probably would have been a good color.
I now cheer for is Air Force and Michigan. The Air Force fans have decency - they cheer for their team and NEVER boo them EVER. Same way with Michigan. I wish I could say the same our beloved schools. Both schools’ fans just su
Neither school has class. The Tech fans use to remark that the Honky-Tonk, unruly behavior was only reserved for red wearin’, cousin kissin’ dawgs. Yeah right. Tech’s fans are just as class-less. They get drunk, boo their coach, their players, and then look to get into fights after the game. There’s no moral highground in the rivalry anymore.
GT and UGA fans: why don’t you watch the Army-Navy game and learn how to be a real fan? Dignity, pride, SELF CONTROL, honor - these are forgotten words in drunken football land.
I’m on neither bandwagon at this point…

Who do you guys play next year? Georgia State? Morehouse?Speilman? Villa Rica Senior high? Come back to the SEC. As far as 1990 goes….you shared with Colorado. And even then the only poll that acknowledge you was the UPI. I guess us Georgia fans aren’t as dumb as you make us out to be. I mean we don’t post to often on Florida blogs. We OWN TECH. We own Reggie “AFL” Ball. We own Chan Gailey. I mean last year you guys were running around talking about CAN CHAN. Now your singing his praise. Jerrell hit us up wit some of dat UGA is racist stuff.

“osama bin buzz”—-are you kidding man? making fun of tech’s schedule when you guys play such powerhouses as western kentucky, uab, colorado, ole p**, miss. state, south carolina, kentucky and vanderbilt. Seriously, you need to look in the mirror. The funniest thing is you lost two of those games and barely won 3 others. By the way, the UPI is the coaches poll, which along with the AP poll make up the two major polls in deciding the national championship. No one argues that tech won the championship that year except retarded georgia fans who some how can’t stand the fact that tech won the most recent one. It’s not even an argument among analysts and other college football experts. FYI, you guys claim two titles 1980 and 1942. If you go by your logic it’s only one, because they did not win the AP crown in 1942, or did u not even know that because you are like most georgia grads who make senseless arguments with absolutely no facts to back them up. Going even farther, in all 4 of the championships tech claims, the “national championship foundation”, has awarded them the official trophy of the NCAA. Georgia can only say they have received that in 1980. so basically you know nothing about tech or even georgia for that matter. nice work.
also, it’s “you’re singing his praise” not “your”. i guess georgia grads really are less intelligent.
