Jackets ACC Coastal champs

Georgia Tech is headed to the ACC championship game by virtue of a gritty 7-0 win at North Carolina Saturday.

It wasn’t pretty, and the Yellow Jackets sputtered offensively after Tashard Choice’s early second quarter touchdown, but the defense did the job against a Tar Heels team that falls to 1-9.

What are your thoughts on the game? Should Tech have done better, given the opposition? Or is a win a win, especially one that punches its ticket to Jacksonville?

Which Tech players stood out the most? What issues or concerns do you have as the Jackets close out against Duke next week, followed by Georgia, before preparing for the ACC title game?

Our coaching staff has absolutely no understanding of the psychology of college sports. This was GT’s opportunity to make a statement, and build some momentum to carry through Georgia and ACCCG. Well, they made a statement, all right. It just was not one we wanted to make.

Stony is right. Unlike in the NFL, in college football a win is not just a win.

Typical Gailey style to play it conservatively. Don’t look for anything different next week either. We will beat Duke, but it will be probably one of the most boring games of the season. Choice will get about 40+ carries. We will run on first, and second downs and throw only on third and long.

If we had played Georgia today they would have beaten us worse than they did Auburn. We only won because we played a horrible team. NC hasn’t beaten a division 1 team this year. Was Auburn as awful as they looked? College football is just impossible to predict.

Great Win! Our defence was excellent…Our offence? Reggie is either on or off. Tashard look great & Coach Nix knew better than to allow Reggie to lose the game with turnovers..so we ran the clock & played Big D. WELL DONE CHAN

Wow. You guys looked great against UNC, possibly the worst team in D-1A. Think the Dawgs are not going to be fired up against you guys in 2 weeks? Think again. Now we see what they are capable of when playing as a team. Stafford will continue to improve. Make sure Ball makes the trip, as I’m sure he will be our MVP once again. The ACC is a complete joke… How many teams have you guys got in the top 15? 0, YOU SUCK!!!

I like the win, but I think a little more cushion at the end of next week would be nice. Get enough of a lead to put in the 2nd string and get them some snaps and plays so the depth’s experience will increase for the remaining games of the season.

By Senior Citizen

logic is no mystery to the Tech play- caller. He knows that the probablity of gaining a first down on 3rd and 2 by passing (Ball) is 50 % and by running(Choice) about 90%.I hope he uses that knowledge the next time that opportunity presents itself. It happened in Tech’s first series today.

Tell me somebody (what is wrong with Ball)? The only thing his number 1 jersey should represent is his ability to suck on any given day, on any given play. He is NUMBER ONE at doing that. Thank God for the defense and punter, otherwise we’re playing Duke for the title. It didn’t even feel like a win, and to Ball it shouldn’t.

Could he be any worse at throwing the football? Please, the guy has plenty of time to pass and (badly)overthrows every receiver. Then goes to the sideline cussing and complaining and sulking, like he’s some victim in some mad scheme to make him look bad.

Are any of you as frustrated with him as I am? Is it just me being negative. The guy needs a firm kick in the butt.

Taylor needs to play next week and let him sit and think about it a while.

Thank God Ball’s not the leader of this team. Good grief.

Charles, I don’t mean to attack you, but there’s a logical flaw in your statement “I’d rather have it be a boring win than an exciting loss.” Unfortunately that flaw in logic is shared by our coaching staff. The flaw is that those are NOT THE ONLY TWO CHOICES. With the talent mismatch that we had today against UNC and will have against Duke next week, a third choice could be an entertaining WIN.

so much for all you optimists who wanted a blowout. Blowouts don’t happen with R. Ball at QB. 10-27 with 70 something yards and three receptions for Calvin? Absurd! Well, 9-3 won’t be so bad. I’m conceding the UGA game to the dawgs after their whipping of Auburn. We should get to go to a decent bowl this year.

I’m thankful for the win - GREAT JOB DEFENSE!

But our offense simply didn’t show itself to be as proficient as it should be with all the talent we have, especially with so much potential to make a statement that Tech has moved to another level. One thing in this game that I was particularly surprised about was the play calling. Nix has done an outstanding job of utilizing our resources better this season, but this game the plays seemed to be far too predictable.

We still are having a fantastic season, and we are proud of our Jackets. We have time to keep moving forward, so let’s press on and nail down a strong finish to a great year! GO JACKETS!!!

Questions for Tech fans who, unlike me, have seen all the games this season:

1 - Is Reggie Ball playing with an injury that hampers his performance, or is he simply an inconsistent QB?

2 - Which GT team will show up in Athens—the one that humbled Virginia Tech in Blacksburg or the one that barely made it out of Chapel Hill with a win?

Reggie will leave GT 0-4 vs. UGA. We get stomped this year in Athens.

Reggie Ball is undoubtedly the worst multi-year starting QB to ever play on The Flats. I will be sooo glad to see him graduate.

And it is absolutely scary to think how bad Bennett and Manley must be…

By BTJacket

November 11, 2006 04:08 PM | Link to this

If Chan chose to play Bennett for the remainder of this year, I would support him. Reggie is the worst quarterback in the history of football. Every game in the books is one game closer to the end of the #1 era. Dawgs win because of Reggie Ball mistakes.

That was certainly not pretty, but it works. I am concerned that we continue to play down to the competition over the past couple of weeks. However, the big difference to this year and years past is that we are still winning rather than losing these close ones.

Congratulations Jackets, regroup and figure out how to get the ball to Calvin again.

All this talk about the ACC being down and the SEC being so great. Each conference has five teams in the top 25. When you look at teams also receiving votes, the ACC climbs to six as the SEC stays at five. College football has turned into “Any given Saturday” as proved today in Auburn and Chapel Hill. Georgia had a great win today but as GT fans know, Auburn really isn’t a tough game……

By cdd

DC The Team will show up in Athens…the problem the last 2 years has been Ball in the red zone in the closing min. of the game. He forgets what down it is & throws the ball away on fourth down & last year throws an interception on first down inside the fifteen. Thats hard to believe.

By Barrel O Rum

November 11, 2006 04:22 PM | Link to this

Can you imagine this year with #14 under center? Ball has no football smarts…Look at the chains…use your legs…run for the first down…

I’ll give o’l Reggie this: He can drop back farther and faster than any other quarterback in history. He took a 33 yard drop against the Wolfpack. If you don’t believe me, check the film.

I honestly think that the vast majority of UGA and Tech fans are good, reasonable people but the people on this blog typify the lunatic fringe. Tech fans, grow up already. Get rid of your God complex and come back to earth. I will be on leave next week enjoying the game with my family. Best of wishes in the future and I hope you win the ACC and get a great bowl game. I don't want you to beat the Dogs though but feel free to win the ACC, Rambling Wreck, and go to a BCS bowl. Tim,

No Conference in the country has more teams in the top 15 than the SEC! I know Ohio State and Michigan are 1 and 2. The Big Ten should be proud of them as they are great teams this year. After Thur, Louisville will drop behind Florida. Still doesn’t change my argument against you. You changed the subject. The ACC is PATHETIC. WAKE FOREST might play in your conference championship. Enough said. And by the way, the big east has 3 teams in top 15, not 5.

After watching all those interceptions by Georgias defense against Auburn I hope RB dosent throw more to GA than to his own receivers. Georgia beat Auburn? Yay! That makes a total of ONE quality win for the bullpups!

Yes, this win was ugly for the Jackets. But we still won. And, Georgia fans- didn’t you beat Colorado just 14-13? And didn’t they lose to Montana State? You got lucky against Auburn.

Sure, it wasn’t a pretty win for the Jackets. But we did prove some things on offense. James Johnson is starting to step up when Calvin isn’t having a good game. We did exactly what we said we were going to do- let Tashard Choice win the game.

And all the Reggie Ball bashing needs to stop. He doesn’t give up, he’s a LITTLE more consistant, and he’s stayed away from the INT bug that’s bit him for years.

Also, we’ve won a few 4th quarter ball games this season, which shows how much heart this team has.

Ugly win, but the season’s still looking good for us.

I keep agreeing that the ACC is down, not GT’s fault. Why can’t you agree that GT has two losses to higher ranked teams and they have won the games they are supposed to. UGA can’t say that…..that’s not a conference thing. I don’t think KY or Vandy is better than UGA, and that’s what should upset the Dawg nation….You had a great win today but it does weaken the SEC is such a strong conference argument…..and FL is still tied at home against SC late in the 3rd…..

James, UGA’s one quality win this year was over the #5 team in the nation. On the road. And what did luck have to do with that beatdown. Now, is Tech’s quality win better than that? Did not think so. It’t O.K. to start feeling the pressure after talking smack to us Dawg fans all year. Guess we are jelling just in time for you. And I do say congrats to Tech for winning the Coastal (lol) division. You should be proud of those guys. If the ACC champ didn’t have an automatic BCS bid, I think your best might end up in the Outback or maybe the Peach. Okay, we are 8-2, but there is no damn way we can beat the dawgs if those yellow jackets show up in athens. I mean nice game, now go home and quit playin like a bunch of girls.

What will it be this year stingarettes…An interception in the red zone, throwing the ball away on 4th down with no time on the clock, or an over-sized ego who has no game to back it up. You have the best reciever in the country, but you can’t get your QB Gary coleman to throw to him. After your near loss to UNC and our win against the #5 team in the nation, we will once again spank your little stingers. Reggie Ball will go 0-5 against UGA, and we will take any momentum you have going into the ACC (or should it be WACC) championship. When Wake Forrest is doing well in football, you know your league is weak. As usual we will show you why the SEC is the best in the nation.

‘sting ‘em.

For all you math nerds:

Reggie Ball = UGA’s best player

For all you GT nerds:

Maybe GT will add on to the stadium some more if you can get your sorry butts out of the library and actually see the light of day to watch some football.

No doubt we will kick UGA’s butt in Athens…if Dandy Vandy did it, no reason why we can’t. UGA will come to the Peachy Bowl in Atlanta, while we are playing in a BCS bowl….B… C… S….woof woof?!?!? haha LOL

CANT wait for Chan Gailey’s lack of flexibility and love affair with Ball to be over.

THEY deserve to be gone TOGETHER!

Thank GOD for Tenuta! HE and our D is why we are winning DESPITE Reggie Ball and Chan.

Note to AD Dan R … KEEP Tenuta at ALL cost. Know where the TRUE value on your coaching staff lies!!!!

We need to sit Reggie down for the Duke game! If he is hurt, he needs the rest. If he is not hurt then he needs an attitude check! 90% of the problem with the offense rests squarly on his shoulders, bad passes and no ability to look to the second or third receivers. How is it that a 4 year starting Senior gets sacked on third down instead of getting rid of the ball? Then he has such a bad attitude that he doesn’t even stop to sing the fight song with his team mates after the game. Real nice senior leadership! The other 10% of the problem was poor blocking by the O line. But then it has to be hard to stay motivated blocking for RB! Chan, please please sit his but down and try to get his attention befor he loses it for us again in Athens!

Hey Tim Hope you are getting a good look at Arkansas now. They are pretty bad huh? LOL They would destroy any team the ACC threw at them. Along with 5 or 6 other SEC schools. I can’t stop laughing at Wake Forest in the conference champ game!

By Kenny

famous_bt8, Wake Forest would beat the dawgs just like Vandy and Kentucky. At best the dawgs beat another over rated SEC team in an over rated conference. Tech will take the dawgs to the cleaners.

Why is it that when the puppies are having a bad year all they can do is talk about how GREAT the SEC is?

Hello? Auburn is OVERRATED. If you haven’t noticed, we beat them the last two years, too. Arkansas? Did you see what USC did to them? Nobody else in the SEC leaves the Southeast, or plays anybody with any reputation.

Wow, UGA schedule Ok. State next year. Big deal, was Oklahoma too tough for you?

PANSIES.

I’m sitting here watching Wake Forest destroy FSU in Tallahassee. Miami has self-destructed. Virginia Tech is not the powerhouse that they have been in past years since it took them half the season to establish a new QB.

Duke occupies its usual position at the bottom of the conference. UNC hasn’t beaten a Div 1A opponent all year.

Wake, Maryland, Clemson, NC State are solid Division 1A teams, but none are outstanding.

I have bristled all year at all the smack talk about the ACC being “down” this year, but the painful realization is that it is true.

Georgia Tech is a good team. We have an outstanding defense. We have some talented players on offense, but the sad truth is that we are way too inconsistent to be a conference champion contender if the conference had been up to its usual standards.

That said, we WILL win against Duke next week.

We have all the capabilities to beat UGA in Athens. It may well have worked to our favor for UGA to beat Auburn the way that they did today. Maybe this will be a wake-up call for our guys. Had Auburn won today, we would have marched into Athens with WAY too much swagger.

We also have plenty of talent to beat either Wake or Maryland (we’ve already beaten Maryland once).

If we win in Jacksonville, I think we can compete with whoever we see in Miami.

The key will be how our coaching staff and team leaders react to the combination of events that we witnessed today. Do they do some serious evaluation and get aggressive and creative in the upcoming games, or do we continue to stand pat?

Yeah - and who is Arkansas beating right now? You guessed it, another SEC team. Where are the SEC’s quality wins outside of the conference? So far, the only one I can find is Tennesee’s win over Cal early in the year. But Cal got beat by 5-4 Arizona today, so maybe that win isn’t as impressive as it first looked.

Laugh at Wake all you want - they absolutely destroyed an Ole Miss team that your beloved Bulldogs needed help from the refs to beat. You can laugh at Maryland all you want, but the only two games they have lost are to WV and GT. Yes, WV blew them out, but that game was early in the season. They are not the same team they were then. Remember, this same WV team was blowing you out too until the home crowd at the dome got you back in the game. Maryland had to play WV on the road.

I am not saying the ACC is better than the SEC, it isn’t. I am not even saying that Tech is better than UGA. If UGA plays like they did today, we will be in big trouble. But let’s wait until after the GT-UGA game, the Clemson-SC game, and the FSU-FL game before any of us start talking smack about the strength of our teams or conferences.

I think Tech was overlooking NC today and looking ahead to that tough matchup against the Dukies.

All kidding aside I glad to see the dawgs win big at Auburn and get their freshman QB on track for a tough game against the techies.

Georgia and Tech should be estatic that the game finally has meaning for both teams.

Arkansas looked fantastic vs. USC this year. I think the Trojans just scored again. Looking good vs. Tennesee and their 2nd string QB. Florida sure looked invinceable vs. South Carolina. I don’t see any SEC team that could challenge Ohio State or Michigan.

Ok, so all the Dawgs come out to the Jackets blog because they finally won a game? Wow, where were you last weekend after that awesome KU game. Besides, just because Reggie was a little bit off today, doesn’t mean he’s going to be that bad next week or even the week after that. i’m worried about him doing poorly against UGA again, but hopefully he can finally make the adjustments and beat his white whale.

famous_bt8: You’re right, Arkansas would beat Tech, but they would probably beat every other team in the NATION too, the only team I wouldn’t see them beating? Ohio State or Michigan, they’re the best team in the SEC by far and McFadden deserves the Heisman, but luckily we don’t have to play them, we get to play UGA. Can’t wait for that one.

Kenny - you are an idiot. The “present” is 5 in a row you moron. 91Wreck - agreed that we can have this debate again after the “rivalry” games, I love our chances in all 3. And where is the ACC’s sig win out of conference?? Yes, we have struggled with plenty of teams, but the talent is there. Auburn found that out today. Tech has struggled with plenty of teams. Congrats on your division champ. See you in two weeks…

With Regie Ball at the helm, Duke now look scary and UGA looks impossible. There is no way to win the ACC championship or a bowl game against first rate competition. Our only hope is for Reggie to get hurt bad enough that he can’t play.

famous_bt8,

I thought I was clear - the ACC has no signature win out of conference. My point is that neither does the SEC. You and I are in agreement that the ACC is not as good as the SEC. But we will find out how much better (if indeed the SEC truly is) on Nov. 25th. I like FL and Clemson, but I have no idea who wins between us.

If we win two out of those three, I would say the ACC is just as good.

By famous_bt8

91Wreck - I agree. I think no doubt Fl kills FSU, our game is a toss up, and I really think the Clemson/SC game is a toss up as well. Clemson has seemed to be struggling of late. SC should have won against FL today. Should be fun. Gotta sleep now!

Why? Oh why are Georgia fans the most classless idiots in the world???

I remember a Sports Illustrated survey taken a few years ago and UGA came in lass place as far as class goes. It seems that everybody has something negative to say about UGA fans showing no class and going around acting like turds, dumping on everyone’s party.

I know Tech has some bad fans, but by God, UGA makes Tech fans look Ivy League!

We have the Coastal Championship of 2006. Nobody can take that from us.

If we beat the Dawgs, they’ll just say it is the one time in 4-5 years, and it’s supposed to happen. If we loose, it’ll be the same old crap we hear about impending doom (despite losses to Vandy and UK.) But nothing goes on the wall win or loose after that game.

Nobody knows what two teams will show up after Thanksgiving. At the end of the day we are still guaranteed bragging rights for having something we can take home.

The only thing they will be able to take home is the imaginary Heisman they gave Stafford before he took a snap, then took away, and now are ready to give back to him for one win.

We’ve beaten Auburn twice. No big whoop.

First of all.. why are there Auburn fans screaming “war eagle” on this blog? Get a life. You just lost to the worst Georgia team since 1996, and Tech has beat you in the last two meetings! Maybe you’d do better if you picked one mascot and stuck to it. Tigers or Eagles? Lame. Second.. The ACC has the same amount of teams in the top 25 as the SEC, and just because it’s not FSU and Miami on top, doesn’t take away from how good the ACC is. Seems to me that Arkansas came out of nowhere too, and Georgia has lost to Vandy and UK. Don’t be envious of our title game pups fans. You can’t win them all. See you in a couple of weeks losers. I love how Georgia fans are so cocky, they get one win, and all of a sudden they’re going to rock GT 35-7. Keep dreaming. As bad as Reggie Ball can be, he won’t throw 4 INT’s to UGA like Auburn’s Cox did. Cox was hurt and couldn’t put anything on his throws. But GT had 4 INT’s against him last year when he was perfectly healthy. Big whoop. Oh and you guys should put Tra Battle in at WR, since he’s the only UGA player who can catch a pass on a regular basis.

Keep dreamin puppies.

First off, GT owns Auburn so all the ‘War Durn Eagles’ can take a hike. You just lost to an UGA team that lost to Vandy and Kentucky. UGA benefited from the worst QB performance in recent memory, and it’s the only reason you won at all. Reality smacks UGA in the face in two weeks when you go down between the hedges.

Q: What conference championship game will the Dawgs be playing in this year?

A: …hello …hello …Bueller? …yeah, that’s what I thought …as always, THWG, you’re wretched.

For dbo, totally classless statement on Veteran’s day.

The problem with conference schedules is if there is any parity, most of the decent teams kill each other off which is happening in both the ACC and SEC. The game in two weeks will speak volumes and the bowls will be a better reflection as to which teams belong in the top 25.

6 ACC teams in the top 25, the most of any conference — and in a down year to boot, what with the dearth of quality/experienced QBs and exodus of NFL draft picks. Florida, Ar-Kansas and LSUx deserve praise, but you $EC dolts can’t swallow the fact that the bottom of your league is as mediocre as others.

hey forth world nation!that’s the dawg nation, just not as much intelligence as the third world nations.

UNC would have beaten Auburn yesterday. GT played their worst game of the year and still won.

That’s the sign of a good team, play very ugly, and still win.

You still got beat by Vandy and Kentucky, Auburn’s Brandon Cox had his worst game of his life and for some stupid reason Auburn left the middle of the field wide open for Stafford to run all day.

Don’t get too excited, GT is still coming to your house and administering a beat down on your mangy leg humpers. Then we will storm the field and grab those weeds for souvenirs.

Don’t worry you won’t have to witness it because you’ll be heading back to your trailer park before the 4th quarter.

you finally win one game against a decent team, and you think you can compete against the likes of an ACC Championship caliber team, stick to you lady gymnastics!

I have to apologize daily for being from the same state as you mutts to the good people from around the USA who have class and integrity. Your lucky win streak is coming to an end, but first we have to take care of Duke (Another one of Vandy’s victims).

one word separates Tech and UGA today. CHAMPIONS

But, good win for UGA today. Way to beat Auburn! But to all the Dawg fans, quit bashing Tech and the ACC. Today we are champs of our division and you are not. No, we are not the SEC, but it isn’t our choice.

So quit putting us down when you can’t even beat Kentucky or Vandy. That game is getting very old.

I’m not much of a Gailey fan, but for all of the people who think we should take Reggie Ball out and put Taylor Bennett in consider this: Chan may not rock, but there is a reason Taylor hasnt seen the field…clearly you dont know him and dont know anything about QB-WR chemistry. It has as much to do with Reggie being a better player than Taylor (which is hard enough to say knowing how inconsistant Reggie is) as it has to do with the connection between Reggie and Calvin. Taylor and Calvin probably arent a good team…and besides if Chan put Taylor out there ya’ll would all be whining about that too.

Bottom line, Nix would call that shot and if he doesnt put Taylor out there, I trust him with that decision.

Lets just be happy we’re sending Reggie off into the real world and will hopefully get some new talent and hope that Calvin will decide to stick around for another season (PLEASE!!!).

…and hopefully we’ll actually want to watch the Duke game after half time and not fall asleep…I want to see some scoring! Obliterate them, please.
