Jackets hang on

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets knew they would have a tough test at N.C. State Saturday and they got it, then James Johnson’s late fourth-quarter TD pass finally put the Wolfpack away in a 31-23 marathon.

The Jackets now need just one win in their two remaining ACC games against lowly North Carolina or Duke to secure a spot in the league title game.

What did you think of Tech’s effort Saturday night? Was it the game you expected? Are the Jackets worthy of playing for the ACC championship? What issues about the team concern you the most?

Who was your star of the game at N.C. State?

And how should Tech approach next week’s game against the Tar Heels? Can this be a dangerous game?

2 stars in my mind were Tashard and Calvin. Both came up big for the offense tonight, and had career nights in yardage. What was really disappointing was the INT return and the KO return for a TD. In all the defense only gave up 3 FG’s. I thought they did an excellent job again tonight forcing State to throw the ball and holding them to 54 or so yards rushing. It was a great win regardless. Brooks also did another fabulous job punting, so we cannot leave him out.

Great win. Nice job showing everyone that we can win in the clutch. Now on to the ACC doormats Duke and NC and then on to dispose of the tidy widy pups. Go Tech and beat Wake for the ACC Championship.

Whatever… I’d like to see us do it in a year when the conference is not a complete joke. Doing this well means we’re at least mediocre. Is Ball’s eligibility up yet?

This was the most difficult of remaining 3 ACC games. Jackets will finish 7-1 in ACC and deserve their shot at BCS bowl. Need to stay healthy, beat UGA and go to ACC Championship with 10 wins. Go Jackets!!

Tech seems to be able to do something this year that they haven’t been able to do in years past: win games they’re supposed to win. However, we have to cut down on the turnovers, and our kick coverage has got to get better. Its been bad all year.

But, a win is a win is a win. Let’s do it again next week, fellas.

A “W” is always a “W”. We knew our history against NC State and that most games go down to the wire - remember last year and Calvin’s near catch? This was another great win that we pulled out despite our short falls. Kick off return is still scary - seems like I’m happy if they start at their 35 ;) Its also pretty sweet that UGA lost to UK today…… I’m planning on a nice Thanksgiving. THWG!

Choice was the man today! He just keeps getting better. Reggie had a bad game, but Choice & the Johnsons took the heat off again. Defense played well, as usual. The backfield & Special Teams needs some work, but our Offensive Line looked really good with the rush. Now lets get through the next couple of games. NC didn’t look bad today again ND. We should have no trouble against them or Duke, but one game at a time. Good job Jackets!!

“This team refuses to go quietly in the night!”

The make me nervous at times, but I admire their desire to continue fighting until the Clock ticks down to Zero.

Thank you brother Johnson and brother Johnson for the four touchdown catches.

The Defense came up big, Offense should up in the 4th quarter and Choice was running like VICTORY was on his mind.

Thanks Jackets, Coaches and Fans.

I just suffered through having to listen to the NC State announcers call the Tech game on XM Radio. Why would I want to do that? Because I live outside the Perimeter. And you can’t hear Tech on 790 or any FM station outside the perimeter. It is unfathomable to me that you can find the Dawgs on what seems like about 10 different FM stations, and Tech is on none. Come on Tech, show you’re a big time program and get some decent FM radio coverage outside 285 so we can hear Wes call the game. I can hear Wes on Sundays, why not on Saturdays as well.

Good win.Thank goodness we are nearing the end of the reggie ball era. This guy is a joke and the fact that we win in spite of him is unreal. I know many of my peers here love him but he sucks. This team should not struggle in half of these games but he is so inconsistent. I am really suprised he has not been benched but obviously Chan is in love and bennett must really suck. I believe we will overcome his sorriness in the ACC championship but the SEC will kill him in the Orange and we can thank God we will not have to deal with his whiny a$$ anymore.

It was a great, gutty win! A bit sloppy at times and I thought we were going to let it get away. But Reggie put it together in the fourth quarter and led us to those two, clutch drives to put the game on top.

Congrats to the defense for keeping the NCSU offense out of the endzone all night. Its too bad they got 14 cheap points off an interception and kickoff return to make the score look close. But otherwise a win is a win.

Tech is now winning the games they are supposed to win and that is important.

I have to admit how wrong I was about this season. I really believed at the beginning of the year that we were headed for another 7-5 finish due to our undersized offensive and defensive lines. I have never been so glad to be so wrong!

I have great respect for the job that Chan and his staff have done this year. There is only one coaching staff in America that gets more out of their team with less talent than Chan and the gang - Jim Grobe and Wake Forrest.

Let’s go Jackets! Stay focused the next four weeks and it’s on the the Orange Bowl!

Big win for the Jackets! This one really had me worried. NC State was definitely up for this game and Carter-Finley stadium is a difficult place to play regardless of what kind of year the Wolfpack’s having. By the way, NoFM, if you have internet access, you can catch live broadcast of GT games on 790thezone.com under instant replay tab. GT played a gutsy game and showed the measure of a true competitor… Preserverence! For you bullpups who don’t know what that means, it means pulling out a road victory despite spotting your opponent 2 TDs. It means the full team winning the game, like a D that plays hard enough to keep it close when the O is struggling, then the O taking care of business in crunch time. Talk what you want, but we are a team to contend with. Look forward to Tech running the table the rest of the season.

State showed shotgun every single snap and picked apart our defense on key third downs. Dropped balls and penalties kept them from rolling up some good numbers. Yes, we turned it over and gave up KO TD (again), but that’s how you beat Tenuta. Stay out from under center and throw the short passes w/ the ocassional deep ball.

Overall, I wasn’t that impressed with the play tonight but we got it done on the road in a hostile environment.

It was COOOOOLD in Raleigh tonight but I’m quite warm w/ the win. Shuts those overrated Wolfpack fans up. Amato…IM THE MAN!!!!!!

A lot of positives in this game: 1) Reggie throwing 4 TD passes 2) The defense giving up ZERO TD’s 3) Tashard rushing for 163 yds 4) Travis hitting another critical FG 5) Calvin having 9 catches for 168 yds. & 2 TD’s 6) James having 3 big catches for 40 yds. & 2 TD’s 7) Despite having to scramble some, only giving up 1 sack Holding NCState to 58 yds. rushing 9) A win against UNC or Duke puts us in the ACC CHAMPIONSHIP for the first time…a 50/50 shot of being ORANGE BOWL bound for the first time in 40 years! If Tech had as much talent as character they would be undefeated. Talk about never giving up! I think that they will always have trouble on the road because they need the home crowd to ramp up their energy but they do keep their composure. Last year they would have lost to Maryland, Miami and NC State.

Reggie Ball is a four year starter, he has had his ups and downs. So what if he threw two INTs he still threw 4 TDs and led the team to its fourth come-from-behind win this year. This is not the old Reggie Ball we are dealing with, he is more mature, more consistent and he does not quit. I believe that he deserves our praise and thanks for a great year. If you are a true GT fan you will not harp on every little thing that goes wrong, a W is still a W, no matter if is by fifty or one.

Congratulations. Nicely done. Could have been better, but we will take the win.

To the dawg team and coaches….

HA! HA! HA! i am laughing so hard i have tears rolling down my face. Oh, and by the way, to the dawg fan who was saying that the acc was the weakest league…the only teams the SEC( Sorry Excuse for a Conference)can beat are each other….the only reason the sec teams are ranked so high is because of thier names and preseason rankings, wait til bowl time comes and watch ALL of them drop like flies, while the ACC teams, who had to FIGHT thier way into the rankings, kick some butt.

Oh, also..MR. UGA FOOTBALL..and Georgia has played who??? Give me a break. Georgia couldnt beat ANYONE in the ACC coastal. In Reggie’s final trip to the hedges, Georgia is going to be &itch-slapped into the most lopsided defeat at home….EVER.

Georgia cannot beat Tech by running the football. Georgia cant run, and techs D wouldnt allow them to anyway. The only way Georgia could win is they could pass, and they cant.

What a gut check! This team has something special. Down after 3 quarters on the road they pull it together and do what is necessary to get the job done. Once again the defense gets the big nod. No offensive TDs against a team that put the ball in the air 53 times is quite an accomplishment. Reggie, Calvin, the whole O-line, and especially Tashard deserve kudos for the night. Heady times on the Flats. Great to be a Jacket!!!

It’s actually good that we (Georgia) is losing this season. At the end of the year it gives us a serious gut check and the coaching staff will need to make some hard adjustments or some people will be fired! I’m sick of hearing that “the ACC is down.” I watched the Miami-VT game yesterday and all the announcers could say was that both teams had “BCS” quality defenses. GT hung 37 on VT and 30 on Miami. How mny points would UGA score against them? Maybe 10 apiece.

I said yesterday that I thought Tech would have enough play to beat NCState. I do really get tired of the Tech Sporstcasters comparing Reggie to Joe Hamilton. Joe brought a program from the bottom back to being a power house, and he also completed over 60% of his passes over 4 years. Even if you compated him to George Godsey, he had 40 touchdowns to 17 interceptions in his two years. Reggie did enough to win last night, but also completed less than 40% of his passes (not including two cost interceptions costing 10 points). All I’ve ever said about Reggie is that he has talent, but is terribly inconsistent. I just hope he continues to make big plays through the ACC championship game.

Regarding UGA being “bowl eligible” - my understanding is that a team must have six wins against division 1-A opponents. UGA has six wins but Western Kentucky (their season-opener) is a 1-AA team playing out of the Gateway Conference. Doesn’t that mean they have to beat either Auburn or Tech just to be eligible to play in Boise? Someone please enlighten me on this. I’ve read articles in the AJC which indicate that UGA is already bowl eligible. Am I wrong about the requirements?

I just have to reply to “George Carter”. While the SEC is surely the more dominant conference this season, I still would not categorize it as a lousy conference. Go pick on Rutgers or Boise State for weak conferences. Enough said. AND WHEN DID UGA WIN THEIR LAST NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP??? 1980 WAS IT?? AND WHEN DID TECH? 1990 WAS IT?

And how about this stat—-As of the 2005 season the Yellow Jackets rank among the top ten NCAA programs in bowl game wins (twenty-two) and winning percentage (0.667, 22-11).

One out of twenty—you give me a break! I’ll see you the 25th, where I can’t wait to deal with folks like yourself!! Always fun when the only comeback you can get is “Uh, GO DAWGS!”

Let’s finish up a strong season in the title game—GO JACKETS!

Could someone please tell me why Ball is still the starting QB at Tech? The 2 interceptions he threw yesterday it seemed like he didn’t even see the defender and threw it right to him and this for a 4 year starter.

Uh, Jan, could it be the 4 TDs he threw as well? Nice way to apply only the stats that back up your feelings. Reggie is our QB…get behind him and be a Tech fan or quit watching GT!!!!

Great win last night!!!!

The next couple of weeks will be entertaining.

First, it should be interesting to watch who emerges from the Atlantic Division. Maryland and Wake are the two one-loss teams on that side. They play each other on the last weekend (Nov 25). Between then, Maryland has Miami at home and BC on the road. Those are tough games. Wake has Florida State in Tallahassee and VT at home. Those are tough games. BC is in a hole, but they have Duke and Maryland at home before they end the year at Miami.Any of those teams could emerge.

Second, it should be entertaining to watch our offense. Will Chan let Nix run it and rack up some “style points” for the pollsters? Will he let Nix highlight Calvin? Or will we do what Chan usually does when we get an opponent down and call off the dogs in the second quarter?

Third, UGA has one more game before the Tech game, AT Auburn. Auburn is looking for respect by the pollsters and has no qualms about running up the score if they get the chance. If Auburn pastes the Dawgs, with all the in-fighting going on in Athens, they may kill each other before we roll into Athens on the 25th.

These are fun days to be a Jackets fan. Enjoy them folks.

Yeah seriously guys next year could be the exact opposite as this year. Try to savor every bit of it.

On another note has anyone though about how incredible our recruiting would be for next year if we win the orange bowl???? It could be the greatest recruiting class ever out of tech……if this one isn’t already!

You little freaks are pathetic. Go crawl back in your hole….and take your little yellow sweaters with you. And you..GT1848..Colorado won the championship in 1990, not tech. The AP poll was the only one that mattered back then. Get your facts straight moron.

Is that the best you can come up with gt1848? Try the stat on winning percentage in “bowls that matter”. The boise bowl or wherever the hell gt goes doesn’t even count in the real world. Like I say..take your little yellow sweater with you as you climb back into the woodwork after this season. see you again in about 20!

I am a fan and graduate (EE, ‘85). I agree that Reggie should not be compared to Joe Hamilton. Reggie is way too inconsistent and definitely not as illusive as Joe was. I am 100% behind Reggie as long as he is our QB, but I do believe CJ would be winning the Heisman this year with a more consistent, accurate QB. With that said, Reggie is a great competitor. Go Jackets!!

P.S. BEAT Georgia!!!

Georgia Tech is definitely worthy of a spot in the ACC championship this year, when they’ll most likely end up playing Wake Forest/Boston College/Maryland in a down year for the conference. I wouldn’t even be suprised if Tech got upset by Georgia this year, but it’d hardly matter if they win the ACC Championship and go to the BCS Orange Bowl.

We will go as far as Ball will take us. He throws for 4 TD’s and is responsible for 10 of NC States points too. You gotta love him because he is a great competitor but he has not crossed the line to take his place alongside Hamilton, or Jones at Tech. How he finishes the rest of this season will determine how he will be remembered.

A win is a win. But, when you let teams stay “in the game”, as Tech too often does, there are teams out there that are just looking for a chance to beat you. If Tech gives UGA or NC, or even Duke that chance, we could be playing on that “blue rug” type of bowl game. I say, when you get them down, kick them.

If you want some entertaining reading go to the Trembling Chihuahua’s BLOG and see the complete pandemonium. Jackets fans that is not how to do it support your team dont hate! These kids play hard every week what goes on at UGA is what happens when kids dont play hard. Nobody is perfect and this team has won alot of games sticking together the defense could easily point fingers at the offense but they dont. So why cant the fans enjoy the wins and know they are learning from the losses and not bash the staff or the kids. Just a suggestion. Oh what were you doing when you were 21?

In response to tech82’s question regarding UGA being bowl eligible: there is an NCAA rule that allows teams to count a win over 1AA teams once every 4 years. UGA seldom needs to invoke this rule so they will be able to use it this year.

The UGA game scares me. I am used to going into that game as the underdog. If Auburn whips the Bulldogs as we all expect (and although they won’t admit it, I am sure that the vast majority of Dog fans feel the same way deep down in their heart), then the Tech game becomes that much more important for UGA. A victory over an ACC Championship-bound Tech team would salvage a very mediocre season, guarantee a winning record, and avoid the possibility of a losing season (losses to Auburn, GT, and a bowl game would give them a final 6-7 record). But far worse for Tech fans is that we will continue to hear the argument that perennial doormats Kentucky and Vanderbilt are better than the ACC’s top Coastal division team. That would be bad.

I am the second fan posting from Gainesville, FL. We actually get to see a fair number of Tech games here, although for some reason the local Cox Cable has chosen not to carry the ESPN channel dedicated to college sports (ESPNU) in a college town. Being able to listen to the Tech broadcasters over the Internet at 790thezone is just awesome.

A few observations:

  • Who do you think knows more about good football teams sports writers from the AP or the coaches voting in the coaches pole?

  • 5 downs does not a champion make - Colorado got a win that they should not have with the infamous 5 downs

  • I believe the Jackets special team woes are the first manifestation of the reduced scholarships from the probation. The typical second stringer that would play on these special teams are not there. This will be the problem for at least two more years.

  • To he!! with georgia

    George Carter (aka “The Man),

I see that losses to Vandy and Kentucky have cleared your mind somewhat. Your posts are void of the ALL CAPS and usual babblings (although the foolish homosexual jabs still remain). After the Auburn beatdown next week, maybe you will go back to your own “Dawg house”.

The records mean that overall Georgia has a better football program and has since the mid-sixties. I don’t care. You should have a better team most years. According to ESPN, UGA spends the 3rd most money in the country on their football program. Two SEC titles in the last five years should be the minimum expectation for your program - it shouldn’t be anything to gloat about.

I pull for my team through good and bad. Even if you beat us this year I will still proudly wear my Tech hat and shirts. If you believe that I am not a real man, you are more than welcome to try and take them from me.

Let’s see how long you continue to wear your colors if UGA starts losing to Tech, Tenn., and Auburn on a regular basis (notice I didn’t mention Fla. - that loss is a given).

BTW - I live in a small town, so I am surrounded by UGA fans that are friendly and smart. They are ashamed of so-called fans like yourself.

Who cares about ugag? I wonder if the ajc will now run an article about how the attendence in Athens is down? After all, wasn’t that the last remaining feather in their cap? LOL!!!

Tech should, as always, focus on the next game. One game at a time until we win out and are in Jacksonville.

The funny thing is that Tech has always been able to at least say, “wait until basketball season.” Ugag cannot even say that! Maybe they can say, “wait until badmitton season?”

Great win for the Jackets this past Saturday, but that is the past and it is time to FOCUS on UNC, period !!!

Speaking of the past, I love how the UGA fans (not saying grads) continue to focus on the past, not only theirs, but ours as well…..pathetic.

Live for the present, but build for the future. The past is just that, the past, something to be recalled and looked fondly upon, but with little bearing on the present and less on the future.

George Carter - Keep living in the past, for that is all that you have. UGA’s rebuilding will last more than this year. You might think Stafford is the key, but you will not have an OL for at least another two years with only three OL on scholarship currently.

As far as only counting bowl games that matter, you may want to define that adn I am not sure Tech doesn’t come away with a better winning percentage given soem of the debacles in the past few years. Anyway, that arguement will really be “the pot calling the kettle black” this year given where UGA is likely to go.

    George Carter,

While we live our “minutes of fame” it is hilarious how you have the nuts to even post here with your team’s season. If Tech were to EVER lose to Duke and to UNC and to Wake (in their normal year) you would never find a Tech fan so stupid as to post on the ugag blog. However, you continue to show your complete lack of sense and judgement by posting on the Tech blog - go figure.
