Jackets bounce back
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After losing big to Clemson last week, Georgia Tech rebounded for a 30-23 victory over Miami Saturday that keeps the Yellow Jackets alive in their bid to reach the ACC title game.
What did you think of this game? How Tech got the ball to Calvin Johnson? How the defense stiffened in the second half? Or were there still too many missed tackles for your comfort?
Who’s your star of the game?
And should this win give Tech enough momentum to get the job done, especially with remaining conference games against struggling N.C. State, North Carolina and Duke?
Are you ready to make plans for Jacksonville in early December?

The formula is simple. Throw the the towards Calvin Johnson—regardless of coverage—and good things happen.
Had Tech done that against Clemson, then the outcome may have been different.
Do that the rest of the season, and Tech runs the table. End of story.

Reginald Ball- you must have a split personality. I agree with the broadcast crew “how can you look so awful at times, and so good at other times?” I’m thrilled we won, but goofy mental mistakes almost, could have, cost the game. i.e. (not protecting the football, laying the football down on your own 1 yard line, almost throwing interceptions, etc…)
1, a dose of humility would be nice.Mr.Cox #40- you were awesome… Mr.Choice #22- nice job. Offensive line- great job. Punter- excellent work.
Kickoff team and kickoff coverage, you guys need some more work. Defense- you were stout most of the game…but you should have never let em score near the end. #34 you need some better tackling technique, good grief. DB’s in general, play smarter.
We cannot let up…we must win out this schedule, win the ACC title. Play in a BCS bowl.
Go Jackets!

Even with their players getting off with a light punishment, Miami didn’t have what it takes. But then again, good plays on defense and offense with some bad ones. Let’s hope the Jackets can get ready and regroup before the next game. Focus on one game at a time after tonight. Win two more conference games, then make reservations for Jacksonville.

I kinda get the feeling Chan Gailey reads Terence Moore’s column. Earlier this week Moore wrote about how GT’s coaches need to step their game up and do whatever it takes to get Calvin the ball, whether it’s screens, reverses, short passes, whatever. So what do you know, today the Jackets mix in a couple of WR screens, a couple of short passes, and an end-around play, all for Calvin Johnson. Great game all around, especially by the defense, the punter, and Tashard Choice.

You are right a win is a win, but you looked simply awful doing it. You beat a very down Miami team this year. I would be very concerned about your run defense. You still need to win out all the ACC games to go to Jacksonville. By the way just because Georgia is losing games this year, you better not take them lightly…or any of the teams that you play down the road…let’s remember for as great as some of their wins have been NC State, Duke and North Carolina still could jump up and beat you. Celebrate when you beat the one of the next 3 oppents. I will laugh my head off when you lose to all 3 of the NC teams…

Hey goodluck, Tech only needs to win 2 of the 3 remaining ACC games, as we have the tiebreaker over Virginia, Virginia Tech and Miami. Wander back to the Dawg blog and go cry where you belong.
Reggie Ball deserves a lot of credit for playing with his injuries. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win.

To Trufan (?) all of the suspended (sick) Miami players had been reinstated for the Tech game., even one facing criminal charges though he didn’t play. They probably should have not been at Grant Field. With any other team, at least 10 of the eighteen would have been kicked off the team. This was a desperate attempt to save Cokers’ job. Won’t work!!

I see that most of the Chan and Reggie haters have gone away again. When are people going to get it - Reggie isn’t a great quarterback and never will be. However, even on a bum leg he is still better than Taylor Bennett.
Chan and his staff have the best players on the field at all times, but our players are not nearly as talented as the other teams. That point was driven home during the broadcast today as the announcers pointed out that our last 1st round draft pick was Keith Brooking in 1998! Miami has at least one 1st round pick almost every year, and many years they have multiple 1st round picks.
We can accuse Chan of being a poor recruiter, but apparently he is “coaching up” the talent he has (with the exception of CJ of course!).

A great day to be a Jacket! Tech wins and UGA loses! I love how the Dawg fans are already on here ripping our win and making excuses for their loss. No matter what they say it’s killing them that a Reggie Ball led team is the best team in the state. They hate it that Matt Stafford can’t hold Reggie’s jock strap . That must suck. Stafford being the second coming and all.

I wish all these stupid people would stop saying Tech beat a very down Miami team this year They had the same record as last years miami team. So what if the pollsters arent giving them any respect. They got thrashed at Louisville and lost a nailbiter to Florida State, their rival. Lets see Louisville might play for the national championship, and rivalry games can be tough. Stop saying every good team Tech beats is having a down year. The only team having a down year are those stupid bulldogs from Athens. Tech played a great 2nd half. Reggie Ball was erratic as usual, but sucked up his gut and played great when he had to. Cox may well be the best blocking fullback in the country - you don’t get 100 yard games against great rushing defenses without blowing HUGE holes in their line. And one last thing…beat the remaining crummy teams on the schedule and don’t pull a Chan Gailey (get beat by lowly Duke). It ain’t over ‘til the fat lady sings…

great game GT…..as a certified chan basher i gotta give chan and nix credit and i am hoping the momemtum continues all the way to jax…go jackets…the defense, punting/special teams, TC running the ball, and the playcalling stand out to me…….some concerns though remain……i thought the playcalling was the right mix but even the announcers wondered why GT didn’t call more screens to counter miami’s speed and pursuit(not just to the wr’s but to the hb)….but i liked all the short passes (higher percentage passes that reggie really needs) to TE, FB, et al ……reggie drives me nuts with his brilliance on one play and blunders on the next…….i still find it hard to believe that he can miss WR’s by a country mile on some throws…..but he’s a gutsy driven athlete who can help tech win out if he limits his mistakes…..the defense was awesome and our defense can bail reggie out most of the time but i’m afraid that against a team with a superior offense, tech would have paid dearly for all the mistakes and the result might have been different……..roberson had a great game but gave up a critical third and long to miami on a screen pass late when he went for the interception instead of tackling the runner for a loss with a big hit…..and who made the bonehead decision to squib kick the ball (out of bounds) on the kickoff after GT took a two TD lead late in the game that gave miami great field position from which they scored a quick TD…..you can’t do things like that and become champion….now, tech won a game it “needed” according to chan…….now the only thing left for chan to do is win the games GT’s supposed to win, something that’s been lacking in the chan era consistently…..with the ACC title now within his reach, chan has his chance to silence the critics ( at least for a little while)….Go Tech

The most encouraging things that happened yesterday: 1. The reemergence of a running game (and not just Reggie running QB draws). Tashard ends up with 100+ yds. 2. The reappearance of the defense. 23 points sounds pretty good, but it sounds even better when you realize that the first 7 were off an offensive turnover, which means that they only actually gave up 16. The only TD was in the last couple of minutes when we were up by 2 TDs. Disturbing that we gave up a long one in that situation. 3. Another indication that this team has character that past Gailey teams have lacked. Down early by 10, they perserved. 4. CJ was back in the offense. His TD catch showed what everyone seems to know but Reggie. When he’s covered, throw it to him anyway. His most remarkable talent (of which there are many) is his ability to come away with a catch even when covered.
Book the tickets to Jacksonville.
As was accurately reported on ESPN SportCenter, even if Tech loses to NCState (which they shouldn’t), they would still ALSO have to lose to either UNC or Duke (since we hold the tie-breakers against VT and UM, and UVA for that matter). If Tech loses 2 of those 3 games, they don’t deserve a trip to Jax.
Now, the question is who will they face? Clemson is the best team on the other side, but they have two losses. Check the schedule, they won’t have another. That leaves BC and Wake with one loss each. Since they play each other next weekend, one will have 2 losses next Sunday morning. Let’s hope that BC beats Wake. Why? Because, Wake has a killer schedule for the rest of the way.
If BC beats Wake next weekend, they would be in a similar position to Tech. They would have one less loss AND hold the tie-breakers over their closest competitors, meaning that they would have to lose 2 more. They have some scary games down the stretch, including a Thanksgiving weekend game at the Orange Bowl.
As a Tech fan, I like our matchup against BC better than Clemson. For reasons of revenge, it would be nice to beat Clemson in Jacksonville in the ACCCG, but I’d rather see a different opponent, especially one that we matchup better against.
Tech run the table? It would be a Tech fan’s dream. I fear the letdown on the road against NCState. They’ve lost 3 or 4 in a row (the latest an embarassing loss to a pitiful UVA squad). But Amato’s on the hot seat, it’s a night game on the road for Tech, and it would be hard to maintain the emotion that they’ve had to maintain for the past 3 or 4 games, especially against a seemingly weaker opponent. This will be a different kind of test of character. Can they get it done on the road without the emotion? Can they assemble their talents and take care of the business at hand?
Win next week and it would take a cataclismic collapse to not be in Jacksonville. We’d have to lose to BOTH UNC AND Duke.
Is this the special team that we have seen glimpses of? Next weekend brings another test.

I agree the AJC coverage of college football favors UGA. However, it doesn’t take a Tech Grad to figure out why. Yesterday we had a huge win and UGA had a devastating loss. Despite that fact, we only have about 50 comments on our blog while there are about 250 on the UGA blog.
As much as I hate to admit it, we are in the minority. It is simply good business sense for the AJC to cater to the pups.

GREAT win. Period. Some comments:
Jon Tenuta has not been mentioned on this entire blog. HE is the man. D gave up NO TD’s until last 2 minutes. WOW.
Brooks the punter gets game ball to me.
Cox must have a good media agent; very rare to see a FB get that much air time. He was great (other than 1 drop near endzone)
Gary Guyton I thought played well. He is not the blitzing LB like the others but he is the contain LB …
Reggie … we won so I will leave it alone but I must say I look forward to next year with a more consistent QB. You need consistency and no mistakes to win consistently as a team. (Leaving ball at 1 yd line is in NO training video.
6.
How about Mike Matthews, Robertson, Clark etc. … I think I saw more players today than I have all year. Anyone else notice that? Maybe we FINALLY relaized our D gets tired in 4th qtr … but NOT yesterday
If I am a recuirt, I am happy
UNiversal comment, from sports bar in the OC, EVERYONE hates Miami.
Summary, great/gutsy win … had a good feeling at halftime going in tied. Program is tracking to be VERY good next 3-5 years.

This team has really found its identity.
Tech must play WRECKLESSLY (not foolishly) in order to be at its best. Mistakes, penalties, interceptions, etc. Only then does it do its best.
Playing cautiously as it did against ND and somewhat against Clemson gets this team nowhere. It has to be wide open.

Where are all those dawg fans ragging tech this week? I guess they have nothing to say anymore….and what about Miami’s players and their handwarmers and dancing around on the sidelines to stay warm at the game? Not only are they helmet-hitting fighters at their games, strongly accused girlfriend beating thugs, they appear to think 50 degree temperatures are too cold for their blood.
Winning the game against a team of criminals for have somehow cheated us and other teams out of many wins over the years was an even better victory. Georgia Tech believes in the whole person in their athletics…..we do not let our boys play when they beat the other team with their helmets or try to beat their girlfriends to a pulp and the police threaten to arrest them on Monday morning after Miami’s team says they are going to let that player on the field yesterday…..good God get some scruples!!!! We know you have thugs on your team but at least keep them in the closet when Dade county has a case pending on them for 10 weeks and a witness to boot. Yes, some of the Tech players have made some mistakes in the past with drug selling, etc. But we took care of those players and they were OUT. If your bad players were OUT…..HMMMM….we wonder would you have a team or NOT? Finally, Tech and some of these other teams who have played you this year are beating you at the game and maybe God is seeing to it that you stop some of your illegal “thug” practices - maybe Florida State will learn from this and we can clean the ACC conference up again….We want good teams in the ACC, but quality, counts

Thank God for this wonderful effort and win - arguably the biggest one at the flats in many, many years. Marvellous win. Congratulations to the players and coaches. Many pro quarterbacks and receivers would have loved to have been a part of Reggie’s long connection with “the other Johnson” for a TD. And who among us knew that Reggie could throw a football 70-75 yards. That’s right. He released at the 35 and threw it to near the end-line of the end-zone. Marvelous throw, marvelous catch. Keep up the good work, guys, and thanks so much for the pleasure you have given me and your other fans.

So I find it funny that the haters are saying we ‘barely’ beat a bad Miami team. What about the game was ‘barely’? Miami scored ONE offensive touchdown, and were limited to 3 field goals otherwise. Their one offensive TD was relatively meaningless inside three or so minutes in the 4th quarter, it’s only purpose was to make the score look more balanced, but for the most part, GT’s offense and defense outplayed Miami from pretty much the 2nd quarter on. Our defense had pressure on Wright all game long, and the rush defense was not as bad as you are making it out to be. That said, our secondary still looks iffy and miss too many easy tackles, and our special teams coverage still is as bad as it was in Week 1 against Notre Dame, no improvements at all. All said and done, a big win. See you in Jacksonville.

Great win for the Jackets. I thought both sides of the ball played good but not great. The defense gave up 2 long plays but other than that held Miami to about 225 yards of offense. The offense wasn’t exactly going against chopped liver. Miami can still play DEFENSE with the best of ‘em. I thoght we ran on first down a little too often in the first half but I think we had worn down their defense by the 4th quarter. I wish all you Reggie haters would just stuff it. Nobody ever said he was a great QB but he’s the best TECH has so live with him. He makes mistakes sometimes that seem like killers and he may not read defenses as well as we’d like but he will always play hard. I’ll take him over any other QB in the conference especially Clemson and Miami’s QB’s. The coaching staff could make things better for him and the offense in general if we would just throw some screens to our TB’s 3-4 times a game. Miami and the other solid defenses we play against get up the field real hard with their front four and drop the LB’s so deep (18-20 yards) that a screen pass about once a quarter will slow the pressure down and pull the LB’s up, which will open passing lanes and give Reggie more time.

HAIRYBAWLS if Miami is so bad why don’t you guys see if you can use them to fill your sept. 1 open date next year? Mark R played there so I’am sure they will listen to your sales pitch and maybe you can get a goodteam to be one of the first 5 games. I sure VANDY will beat UM by 30 right?

I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT THE “MIGHTY” SEC NOW HAS THE SAME NUMBER OF TEAMS IN THE TOP 25 AS THE ACC.
HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE HALO EFFECT, OURS COULD BE AS HIGHLY RANKED AS YOURS.
WHY IS IT THAT THE BIG 10 AND SEC TEAMS CAN LOSE TO EACH OTHER AND IT PROVES HOW TOUGH THE CONFERENCES ARE …BUT WHEN ACC TEAMS LOSE TO EACH OTHER THEY JUST SUCK?

What a great weekend! Jackets & Falcons win and the doggies get wacked agian! Go Kentucky! Wouldn’t that be a laugher. I’ve noticed “The Man” has made himself(or herself, since he/she seems to love talking about anal all the time(Hmmm…makes you wonder, the doggies are in the closet…maybe it’s time for “The Man” to come OUT OF THE CLOSET!!! Also, anyone calling them self “True Fan” you would think would know the facts. The facts that Miami should have suspended half their team after the brawl they got in. The “FACTS ARE” they were suspended for only ONE GAME MORON!!!! Go back to sipping your koolaid and your own blog, ya’ll have enough to worry about this weekend. To “The Man”, I’m begging you, for just once(probably in your life)do you actually have any verbal tenasity or insight, into anything other than your sexual perverted fantasies??? God I’d hate to see where you work, let alone eat the burger and fries that you made. Makes me gag just thinking it. I think I’ll stay away from fast food for a couple of weeks, just in case!!!
