Falcons criticized and taunted
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Wednesday was a rough day for the Falcons — off the field.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said he was taunted by a Falcons player after a hard hit knocked him out of the game last Sunday. He declined to identify the player who talked about the facial injuries the quarterback received during his June motorcycle crash, but said: “I’ll remember his number.”
Meanwhile, receiver Chad Johnson of the Bengals, who the Falcons play Sunday, sounded off against Atlanta cornerback DeAngelo Hall, calling him “DeAngelo Fall.” Johnson also said if Hall gets the best of him and the Falcons win Sunday’s game in Cincinnati, he would shave off his blonde Mohawk.
“He claims himself to be the greatest defensive back since the old No. 21 [Deion Sanders] retired,” Johnson said of Hall. “So he’s self-proclaiming himself the best defensive back in the game right now. I’m going to self proclaim him out of that position when I’m done with him on Sunday.”
Told of Johnson’s remarks, Hall steadfastly refused to respond.
What do you think about the comments from both players? Should Roethlisberger name the player? Are you disappointed to hear this about the Falcons or do the claims have no merit?
How about Hall and Johnson? Are you glad Hall didn’t get into a war of words? Are you excited about the matchup Sunday? Who will get the upper hand on the field?
Do you have a message for Roethlisberger or Johnson? If so, post it here, but please do keep it clean.

I think Chad Johnson’s comments are genuinely funny and I am AMAZED (but also glad) that Hall has decided to take the high road and not respond. Maybe someone within the organization has suggested Hall keep a little quieter. But, Hall should have a lot to say if the Falcons win on Sunday and Chad loses his hair.
Not sure what to say about the Falcons comments about Ben. Soooooooo much is said during the game that is never reported, I am inclined to say this crossed the line, but I think a lot worse may be said during the course of a game. I wonder what Ray Lewis tells Ben after he sacks him. Of course, if the knucklehead had been wearing a helmet when he was riding his cycle this would never had been an issue.

Chad’s gonna be cutting off that ugly mohawk. About Roethlisberger, I say “so what!”. What a crybaby. He got smashed. Taunting happens. I’m sure Vick hears it all the time, yet you don’t hear him complaining.

Funny how dumb some of our Falcons are. Saying something about a player who is hurt is LOW class and not needed. Football is rought but injuring someone intentional is BS

If Ben was knocked out as it appeared, how on earth did he hear one of our players taunting him. I doubt seriously they would have had time to say something to him as they hit him other then maybe a grunt.
And good for D Hall for not responding. He should let his play speak for itself.

Every professional athlete is one play from a career-ending injury. To taunt an injured player is unsportsmanlike and a part of the “thugalization” of professional sports —regardless of who is involved.

We will have to change Roethlisberger’s nickname from Big Ben to Big Crybaby. The guys were talking smack. Almost every person on the field is doing it and they take it for what it is…nothing. Get a grip this is football not day care.

I wonder why Ben R. is going to remember the Falcon player’s number who insulted him, next time the Steeler’s and the Falcon’s play is he going to switch to another position so that he can retaliate? He must want more of the same.

Its football. Comments are going to be made by the players before, during, and after the game. So before any Michael Vick supporters even say anything bad about Ben’s comments let’s not forget Michael’s complaints after the Chicago Bears game in 2002. You guys remember that game when it was said Bears Defensive Coordinator Greg Blache was heard yelling “Take his knees out!” as he was hit along the sideline.

I’m SURE worst things are said during the course of any NFL game. If Big Ben wants to hold on to that, so be it- his perogative. We have more important things to worry about like D-Hall and our secondary. I hope that bonfire Hines Ward lit on D-Hall’s butt is what made Mr. “OVERLY-athletically arrogant” pull the plug on that mega-phone of a mouth he has. I’ve been saying it (in private) for the longest that D-Hall may be a little over-rated, mostly by himself. Hall has been the receipent of good fortune when our pass-rush was 100% Go back and look at alot of INT’s he’s gotten. Alot of them have come when Kerney, Coleman, (in ‘04) B.Smith, and (Panthers game ‘06) Abraham had the QB throwing the ball while nearly horizontal. My mom could catch a can of corn thrown by a QB who is running for his life. Having said that, I do think Hall WILL be that shutdown CB one day, BUT he isn’t as close to it as he claims to be. Some serious humbling is in order and hopefully that happened last game. Now Hall will get serious and let his play do the talking. No more dinner dates, no more trash talking, no more testosterone induced macho chest- bumping fits with the oppostion- just PLAY! And before I go, anyone seen the latest missing person report? Jason Webster is on it! GO FALCONS!!

I think this happens all the time Roethlisberger know this.Plus like the other bloger[Mike] said, how can you hear what someone said while all four of you are meeting the ground, and getting K.O.he just heard some little red & black uniform men in his head. And for Chad that’s all talk, I would say to webster need to put his head on a swivel cause they are coming after him .PEACE

So Big Ben said the last thing he remembered was when he threw to Hines and ducking. Now he says he remembered players taunting him when when he lay on the ground. Get it right….was he knocked out or what. Plus he said he remember the number of the player that said it….now we all saw him lying on the ground face down. So either he has eyes in the back of his head or he is and out an out liar.

I find the “thug” mentality of the Atlanta defensive players tasteless. You should have penalized at least; your behavior on the street would get you charged with assault.
How many super bowls have you won? We have five rings in Pittsburgh, but more importantly we show class, win or lose. The Rooney family would never tolerate this.I hope you guys lose the rest of the season. You don’t deserve anything more.

What is this “thug” mentality talk? Last time I checked, football was football. You dont call hockey players thugs…if you know anything about football, then you know there is ALWAYS trash talking. Wonder if it would be different if Roth was Black and the Falcon player was white? Sad, but true…

Poor Ben…next time wear a skirt. By the way, I didn’t see Hines Ward blowing kisses to the fans after the Stealers (my spelling) lost the game. I don’t claim him as a UGA product since he was apparently ashamed to “confess” to such before the Super Bowl.

Two Comments
1) Roach-burger - Don’t talk too much when your defense made the hit that ended Carson Palmer’s season last year. He definitely showed more class than you after a significantly worst experience.
2) Hall - I am personally a fan of both Chad and DeAngelo however they BOTH have some work to do to live up to the billing. Hall has not “shut down” anyone that I am aware of this year and Chad had his best game of the year last week.
I’m a Falcon Fan that Lives in Cinci so I am looking forward to the game. Let’s see who is talking on Sunday evening.

I hope someone knocks Vick out of the game and then talks smack about it. Give some of these blowhard Falcon fans a wake up call. It was so funny to hear Fox sportscasters talk about Vick throwing 3 td’s in the first half, they just loved him. They never really said anything about Ben doing THE SAME THING DURING THE SAME GAME. What does it say about Vick that it has taken this long to even THROW 3 td’s in one game, it’s just sad. He will NEVER take anyone to the Super Bowl by running so much.

How can you compare the two incidents? Last year’s injury to Carson Palmer was clearly unintended and a terrible accident. The hit on Sunday was helmet to helmet - let’s see what the NFL says.

I sure hope you people still have the attitude “that’s football, he’s a wuss, and put a skirt on him” when Vick takes a helmet to helmet and goes down. You already act like a player should be supended when he gets hit near the sideline. All this dirty play and running their mouth is not helping this team. They are not that good. This is the Glannvlle era all over again.

“Thugalization” Where are you people coming up with these words. I don’t condone unsportsmanlike conduct, but when you get your “bell rung” words are gonna be flying back and forth across that field. When the player said those words, I AM VERY SURE HE WAS UNAWARE THAT Ben was knocked out for the day. I agree with you DJ, how did Ben hear somebody say those words and then just Fall Out. This is football, it’s a sport, it’s gonna get competitive, people are gonna say words that are unruly. Some Tennis players shout back n forth explicit words too. Are they “thugs” too? Yes,you should use SOME class out there on the field, but this is not etiquette class at the Ritz. Ben is just trying to get people to feel sorry for him and some of yall are buying it! Quite Frankly, I wouldn’t mind if some players on the Falcons had big mouths and BACK IT UP on the field. But that’s not aloud in Atlanta, because yall will run a great athlete off like Deion. Nothing wrong with talking a lil junk as long as they BACK IT UP on the field. But SOME you people think it’s this “thug culture” taking over, “OH MY GOD, RUN! LOCK YOUR KIDS UP” before they hear the bad language and see the dances! LoL That was for YOU BOOTS and anybody else that agrees with them.

Hey tj, if you’re going to talk smack at least get it right. I never knew of a coach for the Falcons by the name of Glannvlle. Also, the hit you’re talking about from the G-men game was clearly an attempt to injure the QB (regardless of who it was). It was a late hit, clearly out of bounds (I believe about a few steps outside the big as* white line on the sidelines). I agree with everybody else, how on earth did Poo-berger hear a taunt when he was clearly face planted in the turf? And if he knows who it is (“I remember his number”) why not call him out?

Taking tauting personally seems abit…dumb. I thought ben was a leader and better than that. In the heat of the moment things get said…bla bla. So what. The hit wasn’t out to hurt him—it wasn’t personel. Vick’s hit by the Giants guy was to retaliate for something the o-line did—to make a statment. No one was out to harm ben. Seems really bad form for him to start this kind of debate. Glad to know for whatever reason the steeler fans are still on this board. Why not be on the ravens board or maybe even your own board…talk about what the steelers are gonna do to turn around their season. It was a great game—it was sad when ben went down—batch came in and kicked butt. Great game. Shut up and focus on what you have to do next week.
My thoughts on D Hall is although I love the guy and all—he will get his moments but more will belong to Chad. As long as the falcons win—Chad can have 3 tochdowns and whatever else he wants—just win baby.

O.K., this is Football … you know a Contact sport. For all of this “thug” talk, listen trash talking is apart of the game it happens in highschool, college, and the pros. Shoot, it happens in middle school. I’ll admit I don’t condone unsportsmanlike conduct, but in that situation Big Ben got hit by three big guys at one time. It was helmet to helmet only because Ben tried to duck, so it was perfectly legal. I won’t say Ben is a wus for saying he was taunted, I actually applaud him for playing in light of the condition he’s in … but damn man, this can’t be the first time and definitely not the last time somebody talks smack to him on the football field! At the end of the day the football field is not a place for the weak of heart, if it is getting too hot for him he needs to sit.

You are right, that hit was out of bounds. But I’m sure you have seen Vick act like he was going out of bounds then cut back up field. Even told a defensive player in one game ” I got you that time”. Those kind of things make players have to be sure. The hit on Ben was to the head, and a blow to the head is illegal. As far as hearing what he said, do you think he might have said that when he was about to plant that hit to the head. I think Mora teaches dirty play. Remember the Philly game last year, all the pregame crap and McNabb being knocked out. If you don’t remember Glannville, he’s the gimmick, trash talking coach who held up the 49’s helmet in the pregame huddle and proceeded to get the Falcon’s butts kicked big time because they couldn’t back up all the talk. Before you get the wrong idea, there is not a bigger Falcon fan around than I am, and have been since they came into existence. I know times have changed, but I’m from the Chuck Noll, Tom Landry school. There is nothing wrong with winning with a little class. See Brian Urlacher, he doesn’t have to tell people how good he is or what he will do to them, he shows them. These are just my opinions.

Man, Chad and D. Hall won’t even matter because T.J. Whoseyourmama will have a Hall of Fame Performance against Mora’s boyfriend Jason “MIA” Webster if the Falcons don’t figure out a new coverage scheme. The one we’ve watched for the last 3 years ain’t working with catch it and I’ll tackle you Webter on the field. I think it is extremely disheartning for all the true Falcon Fans to have to put up with watching that guy week after week. I am sure K. Mathis or J. Will would do a better job. It’s not that Webster isn’t trying hard his skills or lack there of are not up to par on a Championship seeking team. Dang, they have to design a scheme to compensate for this guys lack of coverage skills, this crap is maddening and another reason why Mora does not have the ilk yet to be one of the top notch coaches in the league. The defense has regressed back to last years form, with the soft zone coverages and unaggressive third down get off the field schemes. The main problem and he may not be the only but he is the main is Jason ‘needs to be bagging groceries’ Webster!

TJ How do you know what Urlacher says on the field? Are you on the field on Sundays? Gez! By the way, the fact that you seemed so ready to accept what a man who just got knocked out says he heard during the hit shows me the lack of respect and faith in the fact that we may have guys on our team that won’t say those things. The player who taunted Big Ben was Patrick Kerney.I tvo’d the game and saw him talking to Ben as he was getting up!But i’m sure, just like everybody else, that a lot worse was said during the game!Kerney is a big time intense player and I would never hold that against him in the heat of the battle!Get over it Ben!

Yeah I’m sure Ben will get over this like the way Vick got over the Bears game back in 2002. But hey you guys beat the 2005 Super Bowl Champs and the Steelers lost to a .500 team from 2005.
Good luck fellas and don’t let this past weekend’s victory be the game of the 2006 season like the Eagles win was your 2005 game of the year.

Figures, Steelers Fan had to be either a homosexual or a female. And I forgot to address our other sweet skinned female on the board * Kenny D *. Man you sure are good, you must be another yankee who has nothing else to do but read Atlanta’s news paper. D’fall oh man you got us, hey, hey I got one F* Johnson. Oh man we’re funny. Let me address your statement that every key receiver “D’Fall” has faced has lit us up for 150 yards plus? Come on do you have a meat curtain in between your legs like steelers fan? Heins Ward and Joey galloway (21 still had 2 picks) are the only ones to go over 150. And Jason Webster should take more of the blame for those. Here are the rest of 21’s stats on the receivers he’s covered in ‘06.
Keyshawn Johnson - 40 yards.
Joe Horn - 47 yards.
Larry Fitzgerald - 71 yards.
Plaxico Burress - 44 yards.
Who is Cinci’s probowl corner?

Hey TJ’s right lets move to Chicago. I’ve heard great things, lots of hot women wait they’ve moved south (and still can’t compete with the bells). Lots of growth wait everyone’s moving to the south. Lots of beautiful ice, rusted cars and can’t forget the lovable cubs. I like the bears but your city sucks @ss. What this all boils down to and why you northerners come to the AJC and talk bull mess, is that you are very unhappy with your life. Your city has been on the decline for the past ten years and all you have to live for is the bears. I understand really I do, I knew a person who lived in Chicago and committed suicide. I just want to let you know we are here for you. And if talking bull mess on a newspaper in a city that your jealous of prevents your suicide so be it.

If Ben was concussed so bad that he supposedly became unconscious, how come he not only remembers that someone taunted him, but he remembers their jersey number and what they said too?
Seems to me like if he’s gonna go out of his way to bring up a Falcon taunting him in an interview, he would go ahead and say the number as well. Funny how he stops short of actually naming the player who supposedly did the taunting.
I’m not saying a Falcon couldn’t have done it, we have plenty of big-mouth trash-talkers on our team, and if someone made a comment like that in the heat of the moment it wouldn’t surprise me. Not saying it’s right though. But Ben’s story does seem a little wishy-washy to me.
And as for Chad Johnson, did anyone really think he wouldn’t say something leading up to his matchup against maybe the best cover corner in the NFL?

And other side of the field is right, Houshmandzadeh is the guy we really gotta be concerned about… the guy’s a borderline Pro Bowler himself and we are matching up Jason Websterrible against him. We might as well hand Whoseyamama 100 yards and a TD on a silver platter. D-Hall can cover Chad one-on-one, make sure you roll Crocker or Milloy over to protect Webster’s sorry a* though.

I’m surprised at the punk-like comments from Little Ben. Taunting is a part of the game.
My little 8-year old son is a tailback and he gets taunted all the time. Actually, he gets punched, kicked, and spit on in the pile. He expects it.
He says that it;s football and moves on.
Now if my 8-year old son came up to his coach and cried about how the other team was taunting him, he’ll be told to suck it up and play.
Ben’s been playing football for years and this just cannot be the only time he has been taunted. C’mon! This is just another poor excuse for the Steelers only winning two games this year. It is also somewhat of a justification for Ben being knocked out, like they were gunning for his head or something- when it was Ben who ducked down into the hit.
It is the same reason why The Chin came out on TV and called the penalty that was on their WR a “flinch”… like flinching on the line of scrimmage was legal or something. And it was right after that bogus time-out on Koenen’s successful kick. I mean, he waited right until Koenen was set and nodded before he darted to call his timeout, but you don’t see anyone calling that out in the media.
Man! I am a Steelers fan from the 70s, when I was 6-years old. I hate the Cowboys. But I simply can no longer root for that team based upon the spin that they are trying to spew in the media.
Imagine Terry Bradshaw crying about how he was taunted by a DE after he hit him.

I think his carrer is going to be a short one, because a player cannot continue get hit in the head and play. ex. Al Toone and Troy Aikman.
The Chad Johnson and D. Hall match up is going to be good. Hopefully D. Hall keeps his cool and not get caught up in Chads trash talking.

Ben said himself, he threw the ball then ducked…I think the “duck” put his jaw in the path of the hit. I suspect the comment was made quickly after the hit and the “unnamed” Falcon did not realize he was hurt. It’s just trash talk - we all do it - fans and players alike.
As for Johnson, he should talk to Remington about an advertising contract - at least he could make a little money while shaving his head!

Typical hater comments. The falcons have stunk for so long, it’s easy to see why georgia football is more popular. 6 years trying to build a team around vick is going nowhere. Compaining about coaches, schemes and teammates will never help. A great athlete, but no leader. Sherman gave atlanta a chance to rebuild years ago and you still haven’t figured out what to do! Beware Falcons as Chad is simply creating a diversion to open up Houshmanzada. Would not surprise me if their coach is behind it as well. Chad will not score but Housh and the other receivers may get a few. Falcons would be best to gameplan based upon the receiver who has scored the most TDs this year- Houshmanzada.

I am happy D-Hall is not talking trash this week. Maybe he understands he shouldn’t talk trash after his performance Sunday. I like D-Halls aggresiveness and attitude, but until Offensives stop throwing his way in a game each and every week like they did when the Orginial 21 was playing then he really should stop proclaiming to be the best. I think he is very good, but maybe a notch below Deion good right now. Eventually he will get there if he keeps working at it.
Chad Johnson is priceless, his comments and antics are very entertaining. He found a gimmick that works for him and that made him plenty of $$$ on and off the field. You have to hate how the league and his coach have gotten too strict on celebrations and stuff. The things he, Steve Smith, and a few others were during would make you want to check out the highlights or the game even if you were not a fan of their team, but just to see what they would do or say next. I am a little surprised the Networks(pre&post-game shows also) have not petition the league to consider changing or modifying the rule to allow some of these things to continue as they were last year, becasue it adds ratings for the networks.
As far as Big Ben goes there are 3 sides to every story; His, The Other Player, and The truth…. If it was said it was tasteless to say, but regardless, Ben made the comment he has been playing for a long time, then he should know and remember(no pun intended), in football that any and everything is said when someone makes a big hit or play.

On CHAD JOHNSON REMARKS - from a BENGAL FAN- and a FOOTBALL FAN. OUCHO-SICKO - comes to mind. Cincinnati is a pretty conservative town, just ask the waitresses - tipping is just as conservative. my tip to CHAD is ZIPPP… as in “ZIP YOUR MOUTH”. ( pretty sure Marvin thinks that also.) Results are in Black and White, Chad has a RAINBOW- CHILD mentality, with a hope that the POT of Gold is at it’s END. BRAGADOUSUS - HE IS THE “I” - in the word TEAM. If I where the coach I’d switch him with RUDI Johnson.. and give chad the ball, every play..and see if his feet can run as much as his mouth. Reminds me of a certain guy FRED the “HAMMER” Wilkenson in the Superbowl of years gone by.
Seriously I like OUCHO , he’s funny, and on the lighter side. But the serious threat to FALCONS FANS is T.J. on the pass, not CHAD. The government elimenated CHADS and went back to punching Holes. CHAD will be doing the same for himself in this game, that is either punching big holes thru the Falcons, or digging one BIG HOLE for himself - when he returns to Cincy ! as for BIG BEN - Bengals whupped him, Falcon’s whupped him. He should take the rest of the year off, and get over his ill -luck. perhaps COWER the Coward.. just likes to tenderize his meat too much. Whoo-Deh.. let’s have a great game Sunday.

Hall tried to start with Steve Smith the bantering but Smitty wouldn’t go there and said he don’t play that. Then one of the older Panther players talked to Hall about the negative implications that can backfire to do that at which Mora agreed with. So it was stopped with the media but on the field can be another thing.
Either way with the hit on Ben they need to replay that from all angles because it looked intentional head butt to me from both Atlanta players. Head butts have been outlawed.
I have never taken to Vick&Company—something don’t set right with me about them. Just watching how they stand around and talk and hold their shirts grates on me that these are not NFL elite players.

Atlanta is a cesspool. Evident by all the bums trying to eat my brats and asking for cash at the tailgate. Only a city the approves of thugs would allow rampant scalping to go on around the stadium. You even had to put a bum ordinance due to all the scumbags. It’s really hard to tell them and you apart.
Atlanta’s economy is only thriving because an educated workforce from the North filled the high end positions. Your schools compter for second worst in the nation. You claim to have southern hospitality. It’s all a sham! You have no morals and will quickly crap on your neighbor. You are uneducated and have a low moral fiber.

I used to cheer for both the Falcons and Steelers but allow me to vent for a second: I am a Steeler fan who lives in Atlanta and attended the game on Sunday. I have never, ever seen such a disgusting display of unsportsmanship as I did after the game. The Falcon fans were to put it mildly - revolting. I can understand them cheering and carrying on because it was a great game (and they don’t typically win big games), but the whole walk out of the stadium, they were getting in my face, screaming obscenities (“Go home bi*”, “Sorry we killed Big Ben haha”), trying to steal my terrible towel out of my hands. This happened to every Steeler fan I spoke with. I can guarantee you I will NEVER return to the Georgia Dome or cheer for the Falcons again. It was disgraceful and I’m embarrassed to live in Atlanta.

OK, for all of those people who are talking bad about Atlanta, do me a big favor: MOVE BACK!
See, you are here for a reason. If you don’t like it, just go back North. They will welcome you back. It’s too many people living here anyway. You will not be missed.
But if you live here and have no intention on going back, then shut up!
Seed, there’s a reason why you left the North. There’s a reason why you live here. Stop talking trash about the city in which you live. That’s stupid. Go home!
And for all of the Steelers fans who boast about the 5 world championships, Congratulations! I am so happy Pittsburgh won five championships! What do you want, a cookie???
What about Sunday? Did those championships help you win that game? Of course not. It was simply the fact that our team beat your team. You can keep crying about the officials or the fact that we knocked the little Rothie-baby out… or you can just get a little backbone and play a better game this Sunday. It’s Thursday, and we’re still talking about the Pittsburgh game!
It truly makes my heart sad to hear the fans of a once great and strong team belly-ache over a loss like this. You all should really be ashamed of yourselves!
Instead of remembering the championships, remember what led the Steelers to those championships: strength, determination, heart, and toughness. Since when did the Steeler faithful get so wimpy???

Also, to GPATL,
I am sorry that you had a negative experience in the Georgia Dome. I had a similar experience in other stadiums when I support the local teams. It goes to show you that Atlanta is breeding rabid fans. It’s sad for you, but kind of good for the team.
For instance, go to Oakland’s stadium with your terrible towel and see what happens. Or, go to Philly. Or go to Cleveland. Go to Chicago. Believe me, you will get the same or worse treatment.
So, in short, I understand, but the Georgia Dome will become hostile territory for those who want to cheer for the opposing teams. It’s OK that you will never return to the GA Dome. I agree with your decision.
(By the way, do you have season tickets? How much you want for them?)

Taunting should not be condoned in any sport. There used to be a day when a defensive end would knock a quarterback on his butt and then help pick him without saying a word. Of course, guys used to score a touchdown and toss the ball to the referee and go high-five his teamates. Everything now has to be a production and and excuse to self-promote. All of this garbage is one of the reasons I am not the sports fan I used to be. If you ever wonder why our kids (and parents) involved in our youth athletic leagues have no concept of sportsmanship, look no further than the pros from whom they are learning.

Ben R. would have no reason to lie, he doesn’t have to prove anything, he’s won more Super Bowls than your whole sorry a* franchise. When you’re use to winning you don’t have to prove anything, on the other hand when you’ve been a looser your entire history, you do desperate things to try to taste victory, even jeopordizing someone’s carrier. All I have to say about “Big Ben” is that he can get bent. At least motorcycle boy was wearing a helmet this time. Funny how he remembers being taunted and then he goes blank. What an overrated prick. Hines Ward makes him look much better than he is. I hope he is out for the season. Maybe he can go back to his sweet boy yuppie school - Miami of Ohio and give fashion tips on how to match Abercrombie and Fitch sweaters with jeans. I hate that idiot… as a matter of fact I’ll go ahead and say Charlie Batch could have that team @ .500 if he had been playing all year. I cant wait to play them again and hopefully see the Falcons D take his head off and then do the Young Joc motorcycle handlebars dance over that ugly uniform.

Now as for sportsmanship, I don’t know if anyone remembers this, but in the 80s, the game had some of the most elaborate celebrations in football history.
Remember the “Fun Bunch”, for instance? Whole teams used to participate in the end zone for dances and the like.
Also, remember the great defenses of Pittsburgh in the 70s? Watch some old film of Greenwood, Mean Joe Green, and the others from the Steel Curtain. They will teach a class about taunting and talking smack on the field.
Lawrence Taylor was notorious. Shoot! The only guy I can remember that really didn’t talk as much trash as the others was Reggie White. He’ll just hit you hard and remind you that “Jesus Loves You!” (I miss him.)
But trash-talking has been a part of football since before Lombardi. And those massive celebrations dominated the 80s, but actually started in the 70s with the “Air Coryell” group of receivers that used to catch Dan Fouts pretty spirals. (Dan Fouts, to me, was the most accurate passer with the tightest spirals in history.)
This is my last discussions that loosely refers to the Pittsburgh game. It’s in the past, and I’ll leave it to those unfortunate souls who still want to cry about it to keep that torch lit…
Anyhoo… D-Hall is growing up. I think the last game really made him realize that even the best get burned, so why talk trash about how great you are in the media? Let others tell the people of your greatness and you just do your job.
D-Hall is one of the best in the league, right now. But he got burned once and was scored on twice last week. (The other score was probably due to an assignment issue by a safety in the end zone.)
But I watched the game again last night on NFL Replay and I saw Jason Webster get burned and beaten all game. His game was so porous it was pathetic. He was getting beat outside and inside, so it wasn’t the safeties’ fault.
The Steelers were keying on 27’s side and it was evident. It was simply a terrible game for Webster. As a matter of fact, Roddy White on offense had a better game than Jason Webster on defense. It was terrible.
Oh, and let’s not forget that Hartwell got beat by the Steelers’ TE in the end zone. That was Hartwell’s assignment and he got lost on it. Someone need to take a hard look at Hartwell’s mobility.

Woody, you make some good points, but why choose football as the arena to air them.
I was a Dallas Cowboy fan when I was young and I hated the Steelers. We had a fun time competing with Steeler fans as to who had the best quarterback, running back, etc. Lets stick to the game! We all know that Atlanta and Pittsburgh, as cities, each have a lot to work on.

Overall I am tired of the childish behavior displayed by professional football players. Coming off a great tackle like they just saved the world when their team is down by four touchdowns makes no sense. I would be embarrassed that I felt one great play would zero out the loss due to lack of performance by the team as a whole.
Team play is what sports are all about. Everyone seems to want to be an individual instead of being part of a team.
Taunting is immature as well. There no need to talk how great you are. Show it with your performance!!
I don’t see this behavior as prevalent in college sports, but I believe it’s just a matter of time.

Mo, You are correct in that there were a lot of showboating in the 80s and honestly, I hated it then. However, I believe it truly crossed the line starting with Mark Gastineua (spelling?) with the Jets. He started the trend toward INDIVIDUAL celebration and taunting with his quarterback sack celebration. There was no place for it then and there is no place for it now.
You said that taunting has always been part of the game. I disagree. Listen to interviews with some of the “old timers” from the 50s, 60s, and even the 70s. Most of them despise the trash talk and lack of sportsmanship seen today.
Lombardi’s quote about winning being everything is often credited with the beginning of the “win at all cost” and humiliate your opponent attitude. Lombardi would be rolling over his grave to see the crap players do today. His quote was (and is) completely taken out of context. In fact, before he died, he said,
“I wish to hell I’d never said the damned thing. I meant the effort… . I meant having a goal… . I sure as hell didn’t mean for people to crush human values and morality.”
As much as I admire the athletic abilities of many of today’s athletes, my list of those admire as men is getting shorter and shorter.

As a true football fan, people are starting to p** me off calling players like Mike Vick, Terrell Owens, and others thugs based on their appearance! In this particular situation, how in the hell can you call someone a thug for taunting on the football field? No one called Jack Lambert(white) or Dick Butkus(white) thugs and I’ve listened to them talk smack on those old NFL tapes. Maybe this whole “thug” thing has something to do with the color of their skin? Leave race out of football because it has no place. The only thing that belongs here is vicious contact, heart, determination, and skill. Go Falcons!!!!

I restrained my loathing of these milquetoasts-masquerading-as-tough-guys from the North; these carpet-baggers, these this-is-how-we-do-it-up-North embiciles that moan about there not being an Italian or Chinese restaurant on every corner; these cretens, these provincial xenophobic “experts” that count themselves first and everyone else next; these unself-respecting slobs that litter my fair city; I restrained myself because disrespect and abuse are easy when hidden, but when they validated my hatred of them with their cowardly assault on my beloved South from behind the safety of their keyboards I had to defend her.
In person I would slap them accross the face with my glove. Damn cowards.

Born in Pittsburgh, lived there for 22 years. Moved to Atl, been here for 28 years. Have never been to a Falcon game. Too spoiled with 5 World Championships and management that gets it. Falcons have been cursed with pathetic ownership and I’m afraid it continues with A. Blank. Don’t get me wrong, probably a great guy with good intentions. But no patience in this league brings one hit wonders and a fickle fan base. Give the Steeler fans credit. They bring it whereever the Steelers play, no matter what the record is, in all kinds of weather, and SPEND THE JACK to do it. Falcon fans can only look on with envy and hope that some day they can emulate a truly rabid fan base.

Steve,
I understand the glory of not talking trash. Perhaps it was pretty consistent in the 50s and 60s that people didn’t talk trash. I did, however, hear about Dick Butkis talking trash.
Now I was born in 1970. I became a football fan in 1976. I remember Tony Dorsett and Earl Campbell. I remember LC Greenwood, Lester Hayes and Mean Joe Greene. (I am a Steelers fan. My favorite all-time football player is Lynn Swann.) I remember watching those shows that came on TV that showcased the NFL games. It was “Must-see TV” for me.
Now, that was when TV first started NFL FILMS, that turned football games into a ballet; with backs like Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, and OJ Simpson spinning and juking in ways that looked like beautiful dance moves. And you had quarterbacks like Dan Fouts, Ken Stabler, Vince Ferragamo and others that used to throw passes that, when slowed down, looked like tightly-spiraled bombs hurling through the air. And the whole game looked less and less like a game, and more like an epic battle.
Oh, man! I used to love NFL Films!
Now, one thing that was unique, as well, was how they used to place microphones in the field. You can hear the players talking. And they were cursing. And they were taunting. And they were telling their opponent what they want to do to them. And it was in 1976. And it was Jack Lambert… taunting the mess out of Roger Staubach in the Super Bowl… the very first Super Bowl I have ever watched. And I became a fan of the Steelers ever since.
So as far as I can remember, there was taunting.

Also, I woud assume it was Hartwell, back in his first game, who made the comment to Ben. Davis is too oung and Kerney is to classy….

Hey Think About It, taunting not as prevalent in college football? Didn’t you see anything about U. of Miami/FIU? How about the UGA fan getting killed by UFl fans? I don’t like the taunting or the Trash talking and I think most professional athletes and some college athletes are prima donnas and allowed to get away with murder. I still think Kobe was guilty. These guys get paid millions and don’t have to pay for anything or take any kind of responsibility in their lives. I’m talking in general, there are great guys out there like W. Dunn. Sportsmanship is a lost art. At least we’re making progress with the dumping of shock jocks on the radio.

does anyone else find it strange that a so called harley driving tough guy is now crying about taunting? i thought motorcle drivers were supposed to be carefree bad as5es! I guess not.
taunting is just part of the game. i actually wish there was more taunting in sports because it would create more rivalries and interest in the players and games. for example, nascar, baseball, and the NBA all have seemed to get boring because there is not enough trash talking. NASCAR, in particular, would do well to have drivers actually going after each other every once in a while. Sometimes, you will see harvick, stewart, or the busch brothers start fighting with each other and other drivers before Nascar finally mutes them and makes them pretend to be best friends. very aggravating. Junior and Gordon had a legitimate beef going on between the two of them a few weeks ago but now they want to pretend to be best friends instead of creating alot of Shaq-Kobe drama out there which would help promote the sport.
i am glad DHALL has now finally seemed to shut up after being torched and humilated by a great but slow wide receiver who was only wearing one shoe when he burned the self-proclaimed next prime time. i do have to admit though that i am a bit unfair to DHALL for some reason. i am notorious for sticking up for MV7, excusing most of his shortcomings on the poor scheming of the offense. So, I therefore should cut DHALL the same break because most of his performance shortcomings are a result i believe of poor defensive scheming by the coaches. BUT i think DHALL just talks too much and does not actually back it up anywhere close to how he should. at least MV7 for the most part is a good patient quiet soldier who keeps his mouth and discontent shut until he absolutely has to, like last week where his cries actually seemed to spur development in the offensive game planning. PRIME TIME would drive you absolutley nuts with all of his trash talk and arrogance but PRIME TIME always, and I mean always, more than backed up his trash talk.

Obviously, many of you simply don’t get it! It’s one thing to trash talk before or even during a game but, it’s quite another to talk trash when someone is INJURED! There is a big difference betwen the two, ya boneheads!! No matter the team, you don’t ridicule someone when they’re HURT, it’s called sportsmanship but again, most of you have NEVER been directly involved in any form of serious athletic play. You just drink and jeer in your infantile manner, with no clue of what real competition is all about. The Falcons are lucky that they have a soft schedule like they did in 1998 (which is the only reason they went to the Super Bowl — and got spanked, by the way). Instead of the players going on every outlet they can and talking smack about how wonderful they are, they should make sure everything in their house is taken care of. Vick went on television to point out all of the atrocities going on within the team, the offensive coordinator was called to task, the coach listened and made changes (like a punk) and then when asked about the correlation between the changes and Vick’s comments, the coach said that they didn’t do anything any differently than they did for the last several games including the game against the Giants. The offensive coordinator is on borrowed time and should thank his lucky stars that he wasn’t cut loose like the coordinator was in Arizona when the failures are just due to the foolishness at the top. Yes, the Falcons are better since Arthur Blank came along, but I am just waiting to see him on the sidelines again remembering him rolling Vick in a wheelchair out of the hospital — you see what good that does Dallas.
