John Abraham’s injury

The injury-riddled Falcons debut season for John Abraham continues, as the defensive end is expected to miss at least 3-4 weeks after having abdominal surgery Tuesday.

Injuries to his groin/abdomen areas have recurred throughout Abraham’s career.

How worried are you about how long Abraham may be out this time? And about how much he may be able to contribute the rest of the season as the Falcons aim for the playoffs?

well if they could have figured out he needed surgery 3 weeks ago—that would be one thing—now—it does make you think he might not be around much this year. Shoot.

Damaged goods. There is no question that Abraham is talented, but he has a history of this particular injury. How much did the Falcons pay for slightly more than one game of work? His season is over. This does not look like a defining free agent signing. Too bad and nothing personal, but that could have been money spent on other needs. It’s a roll of the dice…

I guess with Abraham we’re going to have to hope we can catch lighting in a bottle. That’s what he is when healthy, but that is a question mark right now. It’s just as a fan you never know what’s really going on because of the spin this staff puts on the status of any of the team’s player injuries. All I’m left to remember is how I held out hope on Brady Smith last year only to be dissapointed. I pray that is NOT the case again. Having said that, we need the young guns to come in and get some sort of rush on in key situations. The secondary is a concern without that rush. I believe though if the offense can remain focused, we can maintain until Abe comes back. We may need this to tell you the truth. If Abe can come back around week 10 or 11 100%, it will be right on time. It will give others a chance to get a taste if they want it and be a better “D” down the stretch run. If we can do that, I believe we’ll be more than okay when it really matters….GO FALCONS!!!

I think that John Abraham is a fine and decent man and he is an incredible football talent. But, he was a massive gamble that many of us were very concerned about.

In my opinion, the money would have been better spent on a first round pick and the addition of Steve Hutchinson.

Get off of his a@#! The man is better than any player on the line when he is healthy. I will take his ONE, monster performance over the Panthers than a few loackluster efforts by that stiff, Carrington. He will be back and will wreck havoc for a few games in December when we need him the most!

I think you’re all jumping the gun. Lets give him a shot. What other alternative is there? Listen, the Falcons have been playing good D without him, allI ask is they hold down the fort until he gets back. We do need Rod Coleman back. Any word on his injury?

Groin injuries don’t heal easily and take a lot of time to heal completely. I knew when he first got injured that he wouldn’t be back anytime soon. Don’t believe he’ll play much this season or next for that matter. He has a history with this injury.

Well, I hate to say it, but It was a matter of time before it became official that Abraham would be out for a significant part of the season. It was too good to be true to have all that talent on the D-line. At least we got a “taste” of what we could of had against those kitty cat panthers. It was worth it!!! It set the tempo for the begining of the season. Abraham get well, and remeber you have a home in the ATL!

It’s too bad, but he won’t be back with the Falcons this year. At the most he comes back and tries to play then goes out again. The guy’s apparently got physical problems that are going to keep him off the field. He’s had problems before. He was a risky acquisition. The team has to move on. There are 10 games to go and none of them will be easy. Other players stepped up on Sunday and the d-coordinator mixed in the blitz nicely. It’ll take more effort from the players and continued creativity from the coaches to get it done the rest of the way. Sorry, John. You might have been good for us. Maybe we’ll see you on the field for the Falcons again someday.

See him in December for some key games? Wanna bet? Abraham will not be seen again on the pitch until next year at best. Wouldn’t surprise me if he re-aggravates it in pre-season and misses next year as well. If you doubt me, just check the number of surgeries he has already had. What makes you believe this one will be any different? Falcons defense will be middle of the road this year without him.

John is a all out player which is why he was brought here and also why he is injured so often! Hopefully when his surgery is done and he has given it the time to heal he will be able to stay on the field and show us all a solid week after week performance that we have only had a glimpse of so far!!

This Abrham issue reminds of Peerless “i hate ya’ll” Price. The Buffalo fans tried to warn the falcon fans that PP wasn’t a #1. The Birds gave up a #1 pick then. Flash forward. Jet fans tried to warn us that JA was a baller on the very few ocassions that he did play. They all felt it wasn’t worth it in the end. Just a cap space waste. Falcons give up a #1 pick again. Oh well. Maybe JA really does come back next season and plays 10 games or so. I think he is done for this season though.

I love Abraham, but one game isn’t enough. If he comes back for the last 4 games it could be very good for our playoff chances and more importantly advancing in the playoffs. Otherwise, Were going to need alot of consistent offense.

i remember not so long ago, after the carolina game, every body was so high on john abraham and was saing what a great steal for the falcons. now those same people are reversing their tunes and saying i told you so. cut the bs, the man played a great game with all his heart. injuries happen to every one. football is a tough, physical game. mat hassleback is known generally as a tough qband he is out atleast four weeks. big ben will be out this week, levard arrington is out for the season, so on and so forth. the man is injured playing a game for your amusement, have some decency and give him a standing ovation, pleaseeeeeeeee.

It’s football and thats why you have backups. Just wonder whats up with the medical staff not catching this stuff earlier. Mora, may have just been lying though and knew it was worse all along. Now what is he going to do to protect his boy Webster now that we can’t generate a consistent good pass rush with our front four. But when Web gets burnt and he will don’t blame him, it now falls on Mora for continuing to put this man on the field. Hope Webster decides to share the compromising photos of Mora once he is finally cut so we will all know just what he has held over this guys head to keep a job for so long!

I am beginning to believe he hid an injury and that the injury never really healed and the Falcons got robbed…..No doubt great player but his reputation in New York was that he played when he wanted to play and that he was injured a great deal…Exciting he was I have never seen a defensive end in Atlanta in 25 years that wreaked that much havoc…Give the Falcons the money back he will never play again in the NFL…

This situation makes you wonder about the physical the Falcon medical people put Abraham through before Atlanta closed the deal. Is Abraham’s a kind of problem that doesn’t show up when nothing is aggravated? Did the docs drop the ball and miss something? The Falcons can only be said to have assumed the risk of this if they had good reason to suspect that he would be prone to re-injury. It seems we don’t really know what they knew…or even if it was knowable.

A true Falcon fan should be fed up by crappy management and is venting for change so they will stay a true fan and the team will be truly competetive in EVERY game.

To be honest John Abraham’s injury is a tremendous blow to the Falcons D-line. More than likely, he will be out for the rest of the season. If we go deep into the play-offs we might see a small portion of Abraham’s. For the regular seanson, it’s a done deal. Why do injuries plague this defense so much? Are they doing proper excercise to get their bodies conditioned for the ackward movements on the field. (What’s going on in Flowery Branch, man)???

By DoveLove

October 25, 2006 07:13 AM | Link to this

Why is no one questioning the wisdom of having Abraham in the Carolina game with barely any time remaining and the score out of reach.

Sure Abraham is injury prone, but knowing this Mora and his merry pranksters should know when to put him away for the game, and possibly he does not suffer the re-injury in that game.

He probably gets hurt in the next game, but this coaching staff has shown just how inept they are when it comes to the little decisions that keep a team on top.

McKay gave them the tools to win, but they clearly arent sure just how to use them.

By DB

I think he is one of the best, but he stays hurt and I counted him out for the season after the first game. We have to roll with what we got. We really should have noticed his track record a little bit more.

He should be back and hopefully 100% by the latter part of the season. By then, the Falcons will be trying to position themselves for a division title and/or playoff seeding. It will be a big bonus to get him back then.

If the Falcons would stop with the soft zone on 90% of the opponents pass plays then he won’t be missed as much.

Now how much of this was already known before we paid all of this money he is making. DoveLove/Arturo Blanco, I understand your frustration but watch some other NFL teams play this year. 0 coaches out of 32 take their starters out in a 2 possession game like we had at Carolina. Abraham could’ve been playing for Lombardi or Landry or Walsh and he would have been in the game with a minute to go. Stop blaming the coaches… these things happen.

JG - I respectfully disagree. I’m not saying pull every starter, but when you’re up 20-6 with ONE MINUTE left, there is no reason to have your injury prone, star off season aquisition in the game. The only reason Mora had him in is because he didn’t want the Panthers to score at all. I’ve seen plenty of of coaches pull their injury prone, pro-bowlers in games that are over. I’m not talking 5 minutes to go either - this game was done, done, done. A team doesn’t come back from a 14 point deficit in under a minute. Pulling Abe would not have affected the outcome in any way and we’d still have him healthy today.

By JG

October 25, 2006 08:53 AM | Link to this

Arturo, I respectfully disagree with your disagreement. Hindsight’s 20-20. All I’m saying is that everyone thinks our coaches are idiots. So watch a team with a “great” coach and if they are in a 2 possession game the def. starters will be in until the final whistle. That’s just how it works. I think those “great” coaches remember that famous Heidi game and realize team’s can score twice in the final minute.

“Take the starters out so they don’t get hurt” or “Why did you let your starter go over seven innings?” is a bunch of crap!

Players used to play the whole game and not complain…… These modern day “warriors” are pampered babies. try to take the ball from Bob Gibson or Don Drysdale in the 8th.

Don Meredith won a game spitting up blood playing with broke ribs. Now a ‘hamstring’ injury ends a season…… pitiful!

DoveLove/Arturo Blanco-Mora already answered the question your asking. They didn’t have enough defensive lineman on the active roster to take all of them out at one time. Abraham just happened to be the one that was in the game at that time. It’s a numbers game. Even though the active roster is 53, I don’t think teams can have 53 active during the game. Not sure what the exact number is but that’s why you always hear of players being deactivated before the game because they are trying to get down to the game limit. You are always going to be short at one position or other. That day the decision was made to be short on the defensive line. It’s easy to look back after the fact and say that they should have went short at another position. People just don’t understand that aspect of the game. It’s just like people screaming to put DJ Shockley in. Truth of the matter is that DJ hasn’t been on the active roster for any games this year. In fact, no team in the NFL has the 3rd QB active for the game. That why you hear the term “emergency quarterback”. The guy can only go in if the 2 active QBs get hurt.

No, we are not fickle. We sat in Fulco stadium when Bob Berry was throwing and Tommy Nobis was playing. We suffered through many 1-13 years (then 3-13) years. We have old red helmet Falcon banners in our home.

We have earned the RIGHT to expect million dollar athletes to play with minor injuries. We want them to SUCK IT UP and think TEAM, and not for themselves or their bank account.

How dare the coach “leave” a ball player in a game when he is making 500,000 for that game. How dare Mora for thinking his star players can only play 100% healthy.

Zook, Humphries, Nobis, Pridemore or Tuggle… How often did they sit with a muscle pull?

However, that sorry a** Hartwell has showed nothing from day number one. Hell, he did nothing before the injury and nothing after the injury this section should be dedicated to him rather than Abe. You moan and groan like you have some idea what its like to suit up and start a NFL game being watched by thousands of people. I imagine most of you jerks don’t go to work hurt and certinly have no clue as to the type injury this man sustained or even the daily pain he has deal with. These men practice and play games with pain and ailments we bus driving, cab driving, banking, teaching, out of work fans are clueless about. So when did you become Blank and McKay? The performance on Sunday by Michael Vick was certainly one for the ages;I honestly think that the Falcon’s victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday was Michael Vick’s coming out party. Micahel Vick will never be the same after Sunday. Sure there were a few dropped balls by wide receivers, particularly Roddy White, but my sources tell me that Roddy is making those cathes in practice; so I believe that whatever Roddy is doing in practice will eventually come to fruition in a live game on an NFL Sunday. The Falcons were playing with desparation on Sunday, because I think that there were four guys who had their jobs on the line: Jim Mora, Rich McKay, Gregg Knapp and Michael Vick. I think that if the Falcons had lost to the Steelers last Sunday, Vick would have been demoted to second string quarterback behind Schaub, and Mora, McKay and Knapp would have been fired. But as a whole, I can’t be more pleased with Michael Vick’s effort because Vick has showed maturity for at least one Sunday against the world champions that he did not show in the previous five games. Vick’s skills had looked like they were eroding and I had just accused him of declining skills; but Michael Vick appears to be on the upswing; and I think that when the Falcons get John Abraham back and some of their missing players; the Falcons will be an NFL powerhouse on Sunday afternoons. I have noticed that Michael Vick is evolving as a very good NFL quarterback, who resembles John Elway, Fran Tarkenton, Joe Montana, Roger Staubach and Dan Marino all rolled into one herculean talent. Michael Vick was sensational this past Sunday and made some plays that only he can make. You know that you are special when you are the only player in your class that can make a particular play. Let’s just hope that Michael continues to improve. I said it before and I’ll say it again; when Vick reaches his zenith in talent, you will see him capable of throwing for 4,000 yards while running for another 1,000. Wow! What a talent!

He will be back! Come on now, we all know that when your in that type of profession injuries are bound to happen. I think that he will make a full recovery and be back out there doing what he does best. He is a very talented player and knows how to get the job done. He’s a key player on that defensive line and I really think that when they acquired him they did a great thing for the team. I wish him a full and speedy recovery and I look forward to seeing him back out there. And, can we please leave this man’s groin alone. Never in my life have I heard more talk about one man’s groin. Get over it!!! The man is injured and I’m sure he’s doing what he has to to get back on the field. Move on please!!!!

With the limited pass rush we have, I think it is imperative that the Falcons eliminate their zone pass coverage and employ man to man pass coverage. We have a very talented corners and safeties that can get the job done. Everytime they utilized man to man they were able to stop the pass.
