Lineman suspended for steroids

The struggling Falcons got another piece of bad news Tuesday when the NFL suspended starting offensive guard Matt Lehr four games for steroid use.

What effect will this suspension have on the Falcons, whose pass protection has been breaking down — Michael Vick has been sacked 18 times already. How big of a blow is Lehr’s suspension as Atlanta prepares for a key stretch of games, starting Sunday against the Super Bowl champion Steelers?

Steroids should be legalized. It’s not cheating, you still have to work out to get results, it’s only a preformance enhancer. This is bull.

Lehr might need a double dose of those steroids. Whatever he took didn’t help him in pass protection. Sh…t, the whole offensive line needs a double dose of steroids. Lehr in particular is a revolving door on the offensive line.

On the sunny side of the steroids, you don’t lose much. Even my grandma will give up 7 sacks. Anything from his replacement will be a plus. You can’t do worse. 6 sacks against Pittsburgh will be an improvement over last week.

last week during the bye i said we wouldn’t win five games with our red zone offense…we are last in red zone td conversions.

the coaches need to develop a passing game…in college you run to set up the pass, and in the nfl you pass to set up the run.

this weak cut block scheme with undersized lineman kills any type of passing attack…no pocket = no passing. it isn’t rocket science knapp. you are overthinking.

oh and as for lehr…he wasn’t doing much to pass protect anyway, i doubt his backup will be any better so maybe our front office will finally realize that cut blocking undersized o-lineman wasn’t the brightest of ideas.

The O-line sucks.

And the worst player on the O-line was cheating, and he was still the worst player on the O-line.

If I were Arthur, I’d fire this whole damn staff for lack of institutional control, and for being complete dumb@$$es.

Especially Greg Knapp.

Just another example that the inmates are running the asylum. Mora comments that the Falcons will have no issues given the quality backups. If the backups are that good, why didn’t he put these guys in long ago? It’s not like Lehr has done anything special.

Mora is digging his own grave here and the digging this week is getting faster. A meltdown by the offense against Pitt may result in Knapp’s firing. A sub .500 year and Mora will follow. Mr. Blank will not sit around watching his team unwind while the coaches all point fingers at each other.

Lehr was the Falcons’ worst starter, so I find it hard to believe his backup would be much worse if at all. Hopefully whoever takes his place plays decent so we can get rid of Lehr once and for all.

And if this helps get Jim Moron and his crew fired at all, it will all be worth it.

At the beginning of the season we were told that the Falcons off season moves were made to take us to the Super Bowl. After 6 weeks what I see is a team that is coming apart at the seams. We are running an offence that is more playground than playbook. When I see the young quarterbacks in the league that are beginning to get their feet on the ground in their second or third year and then I look at how little Mike Vick has progressed in 6 years. Although it has been exciting 6 years, Mike is doomed to be one of those blips on the radar screen that stand out for a moment and then are quickly forgotten. Fran Tarkenton said that Mike will never be a quarterback and I’m beginning to believe Fran. In this league when you see a team become successful it is always the same formula. Great Coach, Great Plan and Great Defense. I’m afraid that we have none of these.

These boys have dream jobs: They get paid big bucks for essentially “playing.” Yet they are either too stupid or too greedy to appreciate that fact and continue to do idiotic things like take steroids. Maybe it’s time to give them a taste of the real world: Cut the pay and make them produce something….and if they can’t produce, show them the door.

Makes one wonder if there aren’t too many egos on the field that interfere with the ability of the group to gel as a team. A team, you know, a group of folks working together to achieve a goal.

He should be suspended, no doubt. But does anyone else think the timing of this is extremely unfair to the Falcons? The article says the NFL tests players at the beginning of training camp. Matt Lehr is suspended two days after the trading deadline. Is that not a long time to wait to announce his failed test? It left the Falcons with less leeway to make up for the loss of Lehr. Sure, they can sign free agents of the street or practice squads, whatever. But it may have been possible to deal for a replacement. But now it’s too late. If players are going to be tested in training camp, and fail, they shouldn’t be allowed to play in ANY regular season games. Seems to me the league, if it wants to maintain a clean game, has a responsibility to test and report the results in a timely manner. They basically let a dirty player play 5 games even though his dirty test was in their hands.

By Dirty30

October 18, 2006 08:36 AM | Link to this

Too bad we let the trade deadline slip. We need more run punch in the red zone. Trade Roddy White to Washington and get TJ Duckett back. We love Warrick Dunn and Jerious, but they aren’t the answer in the red zone. My piece..DIRTY30

Maybe the NFL took their time with reporting Lehr’s failed drug test because the steroids weren’t working. There’s 160 starting OL in the NFL. He vaulted from the 158th best to the 156th best because of ‘roids. Or maybe the jersey sales of the NYG Def Linemen were declining so the clever NFL made sure Lehr was eligible for that game.

People cheats to better their results. You cheat on a test to get a better grade. You cheat on your taxes to reduce your tax burden.

Lehr cheated by taking steroids to better his blocking skills.

Atlanta deserves better than this product Arthur Blanks is tolerating on the field. This coaching staff is just terrible and unworthy of running an NFL team. From Mora to Knapp to Donnetell to whoever the receivers coach is to Rich McKay..this is just a debacle. If Mike Vick doesnt throw better put him at wideout and bring Schabb in on passind downs…please get Mike Vick some recievers first and a new offensive scheme so he can have an opportunity to be effective. Why wont Mora fire Knapp..he’s a terrible play caller? Why wont Mora make in game adjustment? His coaching style will never be good enough to win a championship and I thought that’s what Blanks wanted. Please dont treat the fans like the Smith Family did for years and sell us down the road to advetisement of a good team and then allow the fans to watch such an aweful product.

By Diddy

October 18, 2006 10:34 AM | Link to this

Vick has thrown some good passes this year but with so many drops by Roddy, Alge, and Mike J. people are starting the question his ability. Thats the results of unproven recievers. Play Lelie to show the crew how a veteran works (those 1st rounders should know by now)and Play Norwood more so we can rest Dunns legs. Give Griffen more Touches in the Red zone to boost his confidence. The Defense is Great! Just keep them off the field allday and we should be straight

By Ryder

October 18, 2006 10:57 AM | Link to this

Thank you Diddy for being the only person on this blog to use common sense. It’s true that the receivers are a major problem. The Defense will be worn out if the offense can’t keep the ball moving. This college style offense will not work, and Vick was right when he said they were regressing. Maybe Mora won’t fire Knapp because he doesn’t want any “hurt feelings” same reason Hartwell probably won’t play on Sunday. That is not the kind of coaching needed to win championships in the NFL. If this team is serious about becoming a contender they need to use the personnel that can get the job done. Place White on the bench and start Leile to at least keep opposing secondaries honest. That is what will make the run game even more of a threat. I’m not saying that Atlanta should all of a sudden chuck the ball every play as some teams do, but enough with the run run run philosophy on first down, second down, and third down. Mix it up, be creative. I predict that if they have the same showing on Sunday, Knapp will be gone!

This can only be good news for the Falcons, competitively speaking.

The question for this weeks game. How many 3 and outs will the offense have. It really may not matter who is the replacement guard if the defense is on the field for 35 or 40 minutes. At least Dennis Green saw his offense going in the wrong direction and tried to right the ship. We are in year 3 and are still ineffective in our passing offense.

The reaction of some of the people on this blog to Lehr’s suspension shows how ignorant ATL football fans really are.

Hey, you brain-dead fools: Lehr will be replaced by a guy who wasn’t good enough to supplant the (supposedly) inept Lehr in the starting lineup.

Some of the fans on this blog are really idiotic. Day in and day out what we read is the same blame vick nonsense, that has been floating in atlanta 4 all these yrs. Vick is a winner. He took a medicore team in blacksburg, and made them a national championship contender. What happened when he was injured against Miami? the hokies lost terribly. How has the programs fared since his departure? Not very well. Tech was a contender 4 those 2yrs he was there, from beginning to end. Not in the beginning, and disappearing in the latter part of the season as they have been doing since his departure. Does mike have defencies in his passing game? Yes, but the point is this; mike is a great thrower of the ball downfield.so those strengths so be maximazed, and his weakness(short throws)minimized. That is how u coach. His strong arm sometimes betrays him in short passing situations. But i also know these: His receivers have betrayed him this season. U could have put peyton on the field, and he would have had the same pathetic #s if his receivers were constantly dropping passes(some TDs).So please folks come down. This is the same mike vick who won a division title 4 u 2yrs ago, and took ya team to the playoffs in two consecutive yrs by beating great teams during the regular season, and the playoffs. The game against the eagles in the nfc championship was an aberration, and so was last yr. This team was not expected by most pundits, and some of u same idiots to make it to the playoffs this year. So what is the fuss abt. when they lose a game? So stop this pontificating as if u were with this team from the start. When all is said and done this team will win the division, and represent the NFC in the superbowl on the shoulders of Mike vick. F*** what Tarkenton said. He was just like mike, but less talented, and yet he was successful, so why wouldn’t a far better player like mike succeed? By the way what tarkenton said was that if mike doesn’t play intelligently, he will not last long(meaning learning not to take too many unneccessary shots during games).Enough of this Schaub thing guys please. If he was better than mike, he will be some where starting period.. If u are a “love them when they win, and hate them(esp. vick) when they lose fan, then please go and burn in hell 4 the birds are going to the superbowl this yr. Mike Vick will be the nfl’s mvp, and offensive player of the yr.Mark my words. Birds record 4 this yr.(15-4)

Only in Atlanta could this happen. It’s always the dumbest unbelievable use for a punchline thing that comes along to make an unbelievably bad situation worse. Only in apelanta does a O-line that has the #1 rushing offense in the NFL, get trashed because Ron Mexico can’t succeed.

It’s never Ron’s fault, is it? Pros get 3 seconds in the pocket to pass. After that, he’s on his own. Additionally, how do you pass-block for someone that is constantly moving around in the backfield? Impossible.

Maybe if there’s a completely black team, you’ll shut your mouths.

I think it’s time to sit Vick until he can learn to be a more threatening passer. His ability to run has been great but the league has figured him out.The opposing teams will continue sit back and dare Vick to beat them with the pass and stop Vicks ability to run. That makes him one dimensional at this time and the Falcons can’t win with that kind of scheme.

Let’s face it people,Vick is too damn stupid to play quarterback and we are letting our chances of winning this year slip away. Put Schaub or better yet, DJ in there and I bet you we will win. Never mind… I’ll try to write this as if I have a handful of marbles in my mouth while being oxygen deprived (Fredrick- Please don’t take offense, I’m only guessing).

Duh umm duh umm “His strong arm sometimes betrays him in short passing situations”. Duh umm You got two be kidding, write? So ure saying he’s too powerful to throw short passes? (Please ignore my proper use of the word “too”. I should have used “2”). “…please go and burn in hell 4 the birds are going to the superbowl this yr. Mike Vick will be the nfl’s mvp, and offensive player of the yr.Mark my words. Birds record 4 this yr.(15-4)”

Well golly, mark the tards words and call your bookie. Not only are the Atlanta Falcons going to the Super Bowl this year, they will only lose FOUR regular season games! And… Vick will win numerous awards this year including league MVP. Or……. mm duh umm duh he will have a winning record, yet miss the playoffs, and likely leave the season early from an injury (RB behind C will never work in the long run. The player behind C needs QB skills).

Actually… we should hire Marcus Vick! Think about it… right now the Vick who is the better passer will be playing WR for the Dolphins while the Vick who is a glorified running back will still be taking snaps.
