Jackets escape an upset
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
After falling behind for most of the game, Georgia Tech recovered in the fourth quarter Saturday to defeat Maryland and stay unbeaten in the ACC.
Tech’s defense came up big with two turnovers to enable the Jackets to take the lead. And with Maryland in a goal-line situation and the clock running out, the Jackets preserved the win on a Michael Johnson sack on fourth down.
After barely escaping an upset, the Jackets now have a week off before a pivotal stretch starting with Clemson and Miami.
Were they fortunate to win this one? How do you feel about the state of the Yellow Jackets overall? What concerns need to be addressed during the off-week?
Do you think Tech could lose some ground in the polls? Or did the Jackets just do what good teams have to do, survive against a tough, but underrated opponent?

Everybody was scared about this one, but we pulled it out. Special Teams were miserable. Perfect time for a week off to shore up the weak areas and get some rest. Bring on Clemson!!

Even with Clemson and Miami ahead, (and they are very formidable teams), this was the game that really caused me concern, because this is the sort of game that we are famous for losing. We will win against a great team, and then overlook the very next opponent, and lose the momentum that we had built through victory the previous week.
We haven’t arrived to the point that we can take ANY team lightly, and this game proved it, but I think this game matured us, and we will become more mentally tough as a result of this close victory against a very capable team.
This time we did what we had to do, and that’s the sign of a pretty good team, that, before it’s all said and done, could be a great team. These are the type of games that teams that aspire to be great have to win.

Special teams - awful! We are still hampered in recruiting - can’t get enough good players to stock the special teams.
Gailey - thanks for giving the offense to Patrick Nix. But, no thanks for the fake field goal (he didn’t think his offense could get ONE yard???) and the going for two. I am sick of that stupid book on going for two. If you don’t HAVE to do it, don’t.

A couple of years ago, this team folds…but not this year! Michael Johnson is just a FREAK!! Good teams find a way to win the close ones…Georgia Tech and Clemson both had scares today, but were able to come back and makes the plays when it mattered. Kudos to Chan Gailey and kudos to the Yellow Jackets!!

For what it’s worth:
NCAA Football Power Rankings: Notre Dame: 13 UGA: 23 Tech: 31 South Carolina: 51 MD: 53 Colorado: 59 Virginia Tech: 62 Miss: 81 UAB: 86 UVA: 87 Troy: 101 W. KY: Not ranked (>119) Samford: Not ranked
Avg Tech: 63.2 Avg UGA: 69.3
Of course, UGA has beaten all those teams, and their schedule from here out is, admittedly, tougher. So, we’ll find out a lot about them after tonight’s game. But, as it stands, they are probably both about where they should be in the polls.

I was as frustrated as anyone watching the first 3 quarters and sensing that awful feeling that they didn’t have their heads on straight today. Then they did something that they haven’t in the past. They didn’t panic and found a way to win. Those last two plays by the third Johnson were an awesome display of the will to win!
Definitely a step up from previous years and my hope is a step towards a really special season of winning the ACC.

Whew….a real tough game. But we won and that is what counts. Special teams area concern though and I am sure this will be worked on before the Clemson game. We cannot have these breakdowns against Clemson, Miami or Georgia or we will be in danger of losing. For all the Jacket fans who had written Georgia off..take a look at what they are doing against a good Tennessee team. Its only halftime, but you can see what a special teams breakdown can do - it will ignite the crowd and the other team….All that being said…GO JACKETS!!

Some stupid coaching decisions almost cost us the game today! Two in particular. When you have 3rd and 1 from about the 35 of Maryland you are in 2 down territory. Run the damn ball. Twice if you have to. The pass was terrible and even crazier was the fake field goal on the next play. No way in the world Maryland stops GT from getting that 1st down if they run the ball.
Apparently the coaches are not math majors. They have a 27-23 lead and go for two. STUPID! Two points do you no good. You are already up by 4 so going up by 6 means nothing as Maryland has to score a TD anyway to take the lead. By kicking an extra point you give your team a chance to win on a field goal should Maryland have scored and you get the ball back with about 50 seconds to move down the field. We need to stop making the decision blunders. Remember the ND game when we have momentum and it is 4th and 1 foot at the 50 yard line and we punt. Bad decision. Remember when ND had it in about the same spot on 4th down. Yeah they went for it made it and controled the game. Enough said.
Don’t get me wrong I thought the players and the most part the coaches did a good job today. The offense was far better today than at VT. Sure we had letdowns and a costly turnover by Calvin (still not sold that it was a fumble). Give the game ball to Choice for sure. Overall a good win and give Maryland some credit.
If GT wins against Clemson they will play in Jacksonville for the championship. By beating Clemson they could afford to lose 2 games and still win on tie breakers. If they lose then they will have to win out with the big game being NC State in Raleigh. I am assuming they will beat Miami at home and Duke and Carolina on the road. VT will lose to either Clemson or Miami or BC to get them to two losses. That about does it.

Ty - The GT score will be listed on the front page of the sports section, but the actual article won’t be printed until page three.
I have a question for everyone as well - especially the SEC fans on this blog. Would someone please tell me whom the SEC has beaten outside of their conference to back up the claim that their conference is the “best in the land”. So far I can find only one victory - Tennesee’s blowout win over Cal - to support that claim. Other than that game, no SEC team has beaten any of the top 25 teams from another conference.

God What a great weekend. Jackets Win!!! Puppies lose!!! Yankees are out!!! Great game this team has more character than many I have ever seen. Oh and for all you fellow Tech fans out there talking about 12-1 heading to Miami. Have we forgotten that we arent even halfway through the season alot can happen between now and December. Have some faith. How about 12-1 heading to Tempe Arizona on January 8th vs The Ohio State Buckeyes. Crazier things have happened. Everyone knows we will be ranked alot higher when the BCS polls come out on Oct 15th our strength of schedule is 34th and our only loss is to a very good Notre Dame team in the first game of the year. It could still happen. Dream bigger than just beating Georgia and the rest of the ACC we want a crystal football, and I know the team has there goals set higher than the Orange Bowl.

After spending my previous five years as a student at Geogia Tech, it was refreshing to see the Jackets finally take care of business against a pesky opponent that they should beat. I have seen us lose these games too many times over the past few years, and I am happy that the defense was able to step up in a big situation this afternoon. However, the special teams play is horrible and is something that needs to be addressed in the off week. I’m not posting anything profound here, but I will say this: everone talking about GT in an ACC championship game. Let’s be real - I’ll believe that when I see us go the rest of the season with 1 or less ACC losses. I can definitely see Clemson beating us at Death Valley, and I could see us stumbling against Miami or NCST. Sorry, I want to say the Jackets are a really good team this year, but after the past 5, I just can’t bring myself to saying it.

Good teams find a way to win, and that’s what TECH did yesterday. USC (definitely not referring to South Carolina) has had many close games during its recent dominance because opposing teams attempt to play their best games when they go against good teams. And TECH is a good team.
I agree with an earlier blogger regarding the SEC; outside UT’s beating of Cal, NO (again I say NO) SEC team has beaten a quality opponent outside their conference. To make matters WORSE, ONLY their traditionally bottom tier teams have even played quality non-conference opponents (My dear Vandy was thrashed by UM; UA was thrashed by USC; UK was thrashed by UL, and MSU was thrashed WVU). The so-called quality, LOUD-mouthed, always OVERRATED teams schedule such sizzling threats as Buffalo and other powder puff teams, while crying about how touch the SEC is and how much they beat up on each other during conference games. The SEC is a sad conference that only exploits student-athletes for dollars. Just examine their athlete admissions policies and graduation rates. My dear Vandy is the only school within the SEC with some semblance of integrity. And unfortunately it seems that the ACC is trying too desperately to become like the SEC - SHAMEFUL!

Tech definitely stepped up and won a game that we would have lost in the past. I am hoping we keep on rolling but we have a lot of work left. Clemson is obviously going to be a tough game, Miami will probably be, we never seem to play well at NC, and the NC State game has almost always come down to less than a touchdown. This team has shown a lot of character but we aren’t to the point that we can look past anybody. To the poster saying Tech can lose two and win the tie breakers, Miami only has one loss and that game still looms large on our schedule if we are going to play in Jacksonville.
That said, I wish DawgStyle would at least have enough guts to come back here and admit he is an idiot. I don’t remember a game turning around that quickly against a team ( maybe Tech versus VT 2 years ago at home, but it sure was nice to see the Mutts fold. That team has a lot of holes and I’m just glad they finally played someone with a pulse and won’t be lingering in the top 10 undeservedly any longer. That said, they have a good coach and I expect them to pull it together a little better by the time we play in November.
Way to go Jackets and keep on rolling.

I liked the win. I was there and had that feeling, like here we go again. We get some momentum the week before with a good upset and then we fall to an unranked opponent. But then the 4th quarter happened and Tech FINALLY started playing like a winner. Our D stepped up and our O capitalizied on it. Good teams find ways to come from behind and pick up the W. I don’t agree with the decision on the fake field goal, but I do agree with the decision to go for two. It would not have hurt us really, and gives us an insight into what to do if down the line, we need to go for two.

And I feel exactly the same way about Clemson. While I would like to think we can pull it off this year, there’s no way I have the confidence to boast that they will based on the erratic play of TB teams and then watching us yet again at Wake yesterday.

Good game Rambling Wrecks showing some intestinal fortitude and finding a way to win instead of folding as you have done in the past. I hope they fix the special teams problems during the off week. As for Clemson they struggled against a pretty good Wake Forest team. Keep playing the games one at a time don’t be looking ahead to Saturday, November 25th. As for polls they don’t mean anything at this point the only one that counts will be the final one on January 8, 2007 and I would be happy if GT or Georgia were # 1 with another National Championship. I hope both Georgia Tech and GA are 10-1 and 11-1 respectively when they meet on Nov. 25th in Athens. I pull for both of my home State’s teams as I have history with both schools, I went to Georgia, my Grandfather, a cousin and a niece who all graduated from GT etc. ours is a friendly rivalry without all of the hate.
