Are Jackets in driver’s seat?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia Tech’s 38-27 win at Virginia Tech Saturday gives the Yellow Jackets the momentary advantage in the ACC Coastal Division, but there are still some tough tests waiting for them, notably Clemson and Miami.
What did you think of the Jackets’ performance overall? Especially the way they started the game? Are you concerned about how quickly they let the Hokies back in, including two ill-fated interceptions by Reggie Ball?
The second half played out in similar fashion — a quick start by the Jackets and a late rally by the Hokies. Does Georgia Tech look like a team capable of reaching the ACC championship game?

that game’s officiating was an absolute joke. it tarnished the true measure of the victory for gt and made vt look almost competitive. every big play made by vt was in response to opportunities that were pure gifts from the officials and reviewers.

Great Win Jackets!! Take it one game at a time, Georgia Tech. Awesome recover from picks, Reggie. (one was in the sun for Calvin)

Tech played a great game today, and it was very impressive how fast they started. I’m a little concerned that they let Va. Tech “hang-around” most of the game when they had a chance to put them away early but the defense stepped up, and forced, fumbles, sacks, etc…GREAT win today in a hostile environment. Keep it up, and this could be a “special” year.

What an amazing accomplishment by the Jacket team and the coaches! Of course Tech is in the driver’s seat in the Coastal Division. Virgunia Tech has gtreat athletes, great coaching and a HUGE home field advantage, and Tech still won…in my opinion convincingly. This win makes a visit to Jacksonville and a BCS bowl a REAL possibility. Who would have thunk it just 24 hours ago..Obviously Chan and his players did…CONGRATULATIONS…all Tech fans are so proud of you!!!

Amazing! Tech beats #10 hokies on the road and all the home town paper can come up with is the Jackets let them back in the game. Go and do some research on VT’s home record under Beamer and get on the bandwgagon before it’s too late.

Ga Tech looking good! Ga Tech is really needing the Clemson and Miani games to close and hi9t Jacksonville. We are ready for these other games and Miami for Homecoming. Looks like the program knew what they were talking about scheduling Miami for Homecoming. Ga Tech held them to 43 yards on the ground. Tech looking good in all aspects of the game. Solid defense. Special teams pinning them deep. And overcoming the 2 interceoptions to hold them to 6 points on those was huge. To see the first play of the game to be a 60 yard pass to the otehr Johnson set the tone. 21 - 0 to start the game is how you do it! We’ve got Defense and now play makers to get points on offense. I guess that less than 6 points a game allowed by Va Tech stat is shattered. Our defense beat that alone. This is really a solid team for the Jackets. Look out Dawgs…..”Reggie” ball is coming!

Okay, I’ve said I’ll wait until October and here we are…… This Team CAN BE a BCS contender (by winning the ACC….won’t get it through the rankings due to being so low so early).
BUT, to do this, we must have the following:
1) REGGIE…SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!! YOU SHOULD BE ABSOLUTELY EMBARRASSED TO BE A 4-YEAR STARTER, A SENIOR, AND STILL OUT THERE ‘JAWING’ WITH THE OTHER TEAM….PLUS, YOUR NEXT 15-YARDER MAY JUST COST THE TEAM A GAME (I’m SURE Tenuta’s boys LOVED the field position you gave VT late!!)
2) CHAN, THANK YOU for letting Nix ‘open up’ the offense a bit…keep it up. The Jump-Pass was great and the running game looked good (p.s. Maybe a little better choice of when to run the razzle-dazzle would be good)
3) ACC Front Office…can you PLEASE abandon the replay rules (the ONLY ones they got right were the ones that the zebras on the field called correctly)…and some BLATANT reversals were completely missed (I don’t know how many cameras you’ll need to actually see what millions of fans saw that you missed!)
4) ACC Officials….PLEASE stop betting on the games OR go learn the rules of the game. The last 6 minutes of the game looked like an officiating crew that was going to lose money on the game (even Bob Griese saw the shortcomings…and he NEVER critizes officials).
I could go on and on, but many others will…..for now, I’m out!

Chan turned a 45-20 “statement” rout into a nail biter. I’m tired of watching “south georgia high school football” circa 1962. A great win marred by the usual “chicken” game management. No wonder Reggie got the late “mouthing off” penalty!

That was a great win by my Yellow Jackets! Beamerball was thrown right back in VT’s face. We dominated the running game and had big plays on defense. I’m so impressed. We are setting ourselves up for a great finish. I was disappointed with the bad officiating. Several bad spots, incorrect reviews, and pass interference calls when no one was touched. Were they trying to help out VT? Anyways our players stepped up and shut up their crowd. Revenge is so bittersweet! Go Jackets!

OK this was a great win for the Jackets. The officiating at the end was absolutely terrible. Those guys need to be suspended. The most egregious was a pass interference call when a better call would have been bad coverage (this means that our defensive player wasn’t even close to the defensive player, much less interfering with him).
I am happy with how we jumped out to an early lead, but I wish we had done a little better job of shutting the door on the Hokies.
Please Chan shut Reggie’s mouth. I think that we are all tired of it and if he can play like he did in the first half he doesn’t need to talk at all b/c the scoreboard will do all the talking.

Given the awful officiating at the end of the game, Reggie could have said “whats the good word?” and the officials would have thrown a flag.

Stef,
Yes, the officiating was not quite “high school” level (maybe THAT’S where these guys were last night …. either that or betting the payroll on VT to cover).
BUT, Reggie has fallen into the trap of running his mouth again!! (at one point late in the first half, he was busy jawing at the defensive guys while the clock ticked with less than a minute to play).
Let’s hope SOMEONE (probably Tenuta) has the #@lls to tell Reggie to CAN-IT and spend his energy running the offense. The officiating and RB jawing ruined a PERFECT day (just made it overly pleasing, instead!)

Great game Jackets, but it is Clemson’s year this year. They are way too focused with 4 times the weapons of GTech on offense. It could be a shoot out and our defense is as good, if not better than GTechs - so Clemson will win the match this year.
Sorry to burst your bubble.

Great win Jackets!!!!! Some of us have been BEE-lievers from the start. Welcome the rest of you to the bandwagon. Still we must take it one game at a time. EVERY game from here on in will require maximum effort. Don’t let up on anyone.
To any of Reggie’s continued critics…just give it a rest after a great win. As another blogger noted (accurately)…you don’t really know what’s happening down there…and there was plenty of “jawing” from VT.
Also, laughable officiating down the stretch…but unfortunately by now…it seems to be the rule and not the exception.
Final Score from Blacksburg:

Great Win GT…..A little sloppy at times but you are definitely in the drivers seat for a birth in Jacksonville with the strong win over VT. The win would be been even better if the officiating crew is held accountable for the horrific calls that they made. The ACC office needs to review the film and take appropriate action by suspending both the on field and replay officials. This game, if not for the phantom calls on GT interference and VT touchdown plus the in your face “no” holding calls by VT, wasn’t near as close as the final score indicates.

Ty,
Please give Reggie a break. He is a small quarterback that cannot throw the ball with touch. Emotion, a strong arm, and great running ability is all he has working for him. Telling him to shut up and calm down takes away from who he is. Granted, the penalty was foolish, but don’t you think his constant jawing does more damage to opposing defenses?
The offense, led by Reggie, dismantled a very good VT defense. I believe Reggie’s trash talking got under their skin and caused their linbackers and db’s to focus on him instead of Tashard and Calvin.

Great win!!! Tenuta might be the best defensive coordinator in the country. I hope his paycheck reflects the great work he’s doing. I won’t be surprised if an NFL team calls on him or if he becomes a college coach next year. If we had Tenuta during Joe Hamilton’s tenure with Ralph Friedgen on the other side, we might have been national chaampions a couple of times. You have to dream sometimes!!!
Great work by Nix. Transferring the play calling to Nix might have saved Chan Gailey’s job. It moved our offense from the nadir of Div 1A teams.
Hopefully the team is mature and there won’t be a letdown next week. The refs were horrible. Did they bet on the game and were trying to cover the spread?
Where’s Schultz? Please pick Maryland next week.

Reginald Ball…SHUT UP!
Your mouth and stupid passes (if it wasn’t for the defense holding VT to 2 field goals) could have cost the game…again.
My freaking stomach was in a knot the last 8 minutes…and I swear I didn’t think the last 3 were ever going to end.
How about win Grant was in the end zone for a catch and got popped, the the VT player kneeled over him…was that not a taunt? How about a flag? Officiating was really questionable at times, especially in the fourth quarter.
Back to Reginald, just play the game and maybe you should zip it up on the field.

Great win today, guys. I’m a UGA grad, but I can recognize a team that’s clicking when I see one. You guys are on a roll…hope it keeps on going for you all. You’re the best team in Georgia, regardless of what the polls say…the Dawgs are the most overrated team in the nation right now, and Mark Richt is the most overpaid coach in the nation, too. You all should beat the Dawgs by 28 points…EASY. If y’all could get a quarterback, you’d be easily in the top 5. I still can’t believe Reggie Ball talks so much trash given his spotty performance throughout his “career”. Maybe one of the Georgia QBs will get smart and transfer and play for a program with some SEMBLANCE OF AN OFFENSE.

I wouldn’t classify a double overtime loss at BC as anything to be ashamed of - especially in the first game of the season when your team’s chemistry and timing has not had time to gel. Add two key defensive leader losses (NFL draft picks who came back for their senior season prior to that game and you can see that close loss on the road to a pretty good, ranked team in the very first game of the year is not a good barometer of Clemson at this stage of the year. And it is getting better every game.
GTech is good, but not a juggernaut type offense like Clemson. You could beat us maybe 2 out of 10 times we would play, but it would require the ball bounce your way big time. Who knows - you could get lucky - but I wouldn’t bet a pay stub on it!

From an UGA fan - excellent game for the bees. It is in my mind the best game that Ga Tech has played in several years. Certainly better than Miami last year as the offense showed it could move and score. If they can keep from a let down to a lesser team, they can make reservations in jacksonville.

Clemson:
1 Offense in ACC (no real competition in this category).Top 3 Rushing Offense in the country.
Top 15 QB efficiency in the country.
I rest my case. GTech may be in the driver seat for the Coastal Division, but not the ACC overall. To win the ACC overall - you will have to go through Clemson first!
Good luck - you’re gonna need it.

I see a lot of talk about beating Clemson and Miami and obtaining a BCS berth. Hopefully, the team doesn’t share this mindset. They need to focus on beating Maryland next week - period. The rest of the games will take care of themselves as long a we take them one at a time. We’ve gotten ahead of ourselves in the past and it’s led to embarrassments to the likes of Duke and NC State. One game at a time guys and might just put together a very special season.

Great win Jackets!!!
The officiating was absolutely horrific. Bad spots, no holding calls, pass interference that wasn’t, just anything to help keep VT in the game. Totally inexcusable calls and ineptness for all the nation to see. Trust me the ACC will be reviewing the officiating closely. Suffice it to say that crew will not be doing the ACC game in Jacksonville. Seems like replay officials are screwing up every week.
Big games looming at Clemson and NC State. Tech has dominated NC State in Raleigh of late but that game scares me. That jerk Amato with his fairy red shoes may spring a surprise but if we beat Clemson and Miami prior to that then we can afford a loss and still claim the division. A lot of football left hope it doesn’t come down to the replay officials.

I thought Tech was great through and through, the 2 interceptions are ok. We overcame them, that was a good sign. I think that officials should be more accountable. As far as the reviews-they didn’t take long enough to even look at every angle. GT didn’t let VT back in the game, the officials did. If the heat was turned up on officials across the board we could see some real football. I was stunned by the poor calls. What a joke. Something has got to be done about poor officials.

Hey tigers#1
Did you mean Clemson’s loss at BC as the first conference game of the year for the lack of chemistry? Considering it was their second game of the year overall.
Great win for the Jackets this afternoon. Given our proclivities in recent years I wouldn’t be at all surprised at a loss against Maryland, though we certainly should expect to win.
Worst officiating I have seen ever. I’ve seen middle school games with better officiating. If replay is going to work than how do you totally blow at least 2 reviews onfield, not to mention the onfield plays that were called incorrectly in the first place.
It appears that replay has cut the balls off of college officials like the pros.
If you have no guts to make a call anymore, then what’s the point of replay?
Go with the calls on the field and be done with it. Even if that gave Colorado 5 downs in 1991. Missouri coaching staff’s responsobility entirely.

Don’t throw the ACC under the bus just yet simply b/c the run of the mill headline teams (Miami and FSU) are having a bad year. There are some really good, solid teams in the ACC that can just as easily beat ANY SEC team. The ones that come to mind are BC, Clemson, and GTech specifically. Here’s another vote that the officiating in this game was the most obviously one-sided in the 2nd half I have seen in quite a while.
A GT first down taken away by bad spot - reviewed but not overruled
VT had a touchdown given they did not earn, not overruled.
GT Pass Interference called when there was none.
VT had 2 first downs given by spots they did not earn - the official even was seen to scoot the ball over the foot it needed to be made.
No holdings - announcers even said VT was tackling the GT defensive lineman but they could not get a call.
Some one call the league office and make sure this is reviewed - it really did look like they were trying to get VT back in the game however they could.
Great win for Tech over a good team and a horrible set of ‘officials’

Guys, about Reggie, heading into the game yesterday he had thown 44 TD passes and 44 INTs, in his incredible career, then he throws 2 more TDs, and 2 more INTs, and manages 56% completion on his passes.
He is mediocre. We won with Tenuta’s D, and Choice’s legs, 100+ game on the ground.
Reggie is Reggie, he competes on the field, he is a mediocre QB if you look at his stats, but I will say that he keeps coming back every play. Win or lose, he never gives up. He will get over that hump some day, let’s hope soon, before the Clemson game!

Hey Ty, I don’t think you are in a position to tell anyone to Shut-up. RB plays with passion, and it’s fine if you don’t like it, but being offensive as you have been doing indicates some issues you may have not with RB, but with yourself. Go get some therapy.

To all you folks thinking that RB’s “jawing” equates to emotion and is “just who he is”…. I’m telling you now that it WILL cost the Jackets BIG before the season is over……
Emotion is NOT “getting caught up” in what the defense is saying….Emotion IS firing up your team (and fans) by great play. And Shivas, I’ve sat 10 rows up and watched Reggie for 3+ years now. For 2 1/2 of those years, I defended him and gave him time to develop….HE’S A SENIOR 4-YEAR STARTER NOW!!
TIME TO ACT LIKE IT!

A great win. However, when I went to the AJC home page this morning the headline and picture is UGA BEATS OLE MISS. I don’t get it. They should have won. We’re the ones with the upset. We did, however, get Calvin’s picture and small line in upper right corner on front page of printed paper. Go Jackets!

Last night after our win over VT the AlJazera Journal Constitution did not post a large color photo of our win on the front page of AJC.com. There was only a two liner at the bottom of the page. Later in the evening after UGA’s win over Ole Miss the AJC.com posted a large photo of UGA’s win. It sort of eats at me how truly unfair the newspaper is and always have been to Tech.

What a terrific game for the Jackets. What kills me, though, is they beat a ranked team soundly…Bulldogs once again struggle to beat a patsy and who’s picture is prominently displayed on the AJC website home page…Dawgs! Tech could beat #1 team in the country while the Dawgs beat a Div II team with no wins and they’d still get the front page at the AJC and here in Macon on the Macon Telegraph. The Jackets will never get any respect in the newspapers. It’s a shame.

Congrats to Nix! evidently he did some serious study of VPI. That first play used Johnson and Johnson to perfection…that d back committed to CJ and RBall did exactly what a stellar QB does in that case…hit the other Johnson with a great pass…and that set the tone for the remainder (well, almost, until the refs tried to change things) of a fine GT game. Coach T evidently did his homework also! GO Tech! Beat MD!

Tech has beat a top 10 team(ND), 11th rank VA Tech, which could mean winning out if injuries stay at a minimum and have little luck. I am glad Coach Nix is doing so well, he won alot of games as a QB at Auburn.

War Eagle - We did not beat ND. Do you watch college football? This was a great win for the Tech. It kills me that we dominate a team like VT and you still have these idiots ripping Gailey and Ball. It’s ridiculous! Great game Tech! Lets go out and take care of Maryland! Go Tech! “to hell with Georgia”

Isn’t it just like the AJC to feature Georgia’s win over lowly Ole Miss and put a great win by Georgia Tech over Virginia Tech on the back pages. What’s up with that, again and again?

What a headline. Is that supposed to impress anyone? Come on, GT gets a huge upset with a ton on the line and a ton going against them……and the headline is “UGA beats Ole Miss”. I’m so happy I got a USA Today instead of an AJC with breakfast Saturday before the game. I knew I had a good reason for doing that. Horrid officiating and it’s not sour grapes if you won. The national broadcasters were commenting on how bad it was. What’s the deal, isn’t it illegal or something for the refs to cheat?

I’m coming up from Jupiter, FL to see the Maryland game. Congrats to Coach Gailey on a sound victory. I think I woulda given the player of the game to our punter. OUTSTANDING. Not only did he get the ball off quickly, he also pinned them deep several times.

Imagine where Tech would be had Gailey not gotten conservative in the ND game. Team is looking good. I think it all rides on the play-calling and Reggie Ball minimizing his boneheaded plays.

My question is WHY does UGA always get the ELITE billing on the AJC website when everyone knows that they havent played anyone yet? Tech has by far outplayed UGA to include the caliber of their opponets. Just wondering!!!

Sweet, sweet win for my team. But I agree the officiating was abhorrent. I counted atleast 4 big plays that were called incorrectly, and then even the REVIEW backed up the bad call. Unbelievable. And they all were in VT’s favor. And we still won.

I was at the game and must say it was a great, great win!! I hope we continue to play at the level we’re capable of playing.
My biggest comment is about the sportsmanship of the VT fans. I must say they were really great even after the loss!! I was even amongst VT students the majority of the time and they were still very gracious in the loss. Many of them touted Calvin Johnson and demanded that we beat Clemson and Miami and stay atop the division. All in all, great day, great campus, and great win!!!
Just thought it was noteworthy.
BTW, GO JACKETS!!!

I have followed GT since I was 9 and I am 62. I was so proud of them taking it to VT. I got so sick of Beamer ball and especially loved the blocked punt and fumble recovery run for a touchdown. Tech showed balance which can take them to big wins. It also show preparation like the first pass to James Johnson. I don’t know why Reggie shoots his mouth off all the time; it’s not what I think a leader should do and demeans all he does on the field. He must just be insecure. If he keeps his cool and beats UGA, I will forgive him for his career. But he will not make a mark at GT until he leads Tech over UGA. And UGA can be had this year. I would like for the ACC to review this game for the poor officiating. The “reviews” were a joke where it was obvious the reviewers were trying to protect the officials on the field who made some very bad calls.

Great Win Wrambling Wreck and I agree the officiating left a lot to be desired and that is putting it mildly. Now for tigers#1 you say that Clemson will beat Tech because they have 4 times the weapons of GTech on offense. You must be dreaming, by the way GT should be 5-0 right now and would be if the “Refs” had called some penalties for holding on ND when they tackled GT’s defensive linemen several times on their two scoring drives. I would caution that GT needs to stay focused on one opponent at a time and next up is Maryland. With that said I will be looking forward to the last Game of the regular season when my beloved Dawgs and yes my beloved Jackets meet in Athens.

I want to know why UGA was on the Front Page of AJC.com ?
The dogs don’t deserve to be # 10 after squeeking by Colorado and their poor performance yesterday …
Tech played awesome against Notre Dame, and kept the Irish at bay the whole game until the end … The Jackets Dominated Va Tech yesterday …
What does the AJC do ?
They dis the home town team …
That’s Pathetic . . .

Hey Nekkid Dawg: if i’m not mistaken, you wrote the following about the Jackets: “They stink and the dawgs will kick their butts as usual with our great trio of QB’s and great receivers” YOU MUST BE SMOKING CRACK!! Great trio of QB’s?? what? huh? come again?? And great receivers? Have you watched a game yet? that wr bunch has more drops than a visine bottle. And it will all get worse as soon as the worst of the trio Tereshitski gets back.(aka your starter) He throws like a girl and is only there because his daddy and granddaddy made it happen. Go back to your trailer in Athens and smoke that crackrock with your inbred family- beeoootch.

Tereshitski would be lucky to be Division III without the help of his daddy and granddaddy. GO SMOKE THAT ROCK REDNECK!!!

God bless Reggie Ball. He’s a talented athlete but does not have all the tools needed to be a quaterback for a top ten team. Yet, he continues to compete, plays hard and will probably lead GT to a top ten season. Mouthing off isn’t cool but the combination of bad officiating and Gailey’s approach to football (not attempting to make a first down on 4th and three inches) is enough to drive anyone crazy. Reggie made ONE mistake (the first interception) in a pressure cooker game. I’d say that his performance was pretty damn good. Tech’s record against ranked teams on the road is further evidence. I do believe that the over-rated UGA Dawgs are concerned about the last game of the season about now even if they continue to “whistle in the graveyard.”

I couldnt have been more proud to be a Jacket fan after witnessing our great win in Blacksburg regardless of the refs, this has to be one of my all time favorite wins with Chan Gailey as our coach.I agree that Reggie needs to keep his focus on the game and throwing the ball out of bounds when his receivers are covered, outside of that Reggie has done a very decent job considering he has to hear all the HYPE about uga great QB situation, which we are finding out it is nothing but fluff .Now they are anxious to get Joe T back, man this program is the most over rated bunch of sec fluff I have ever seen, at the end of there tough schedule (UT, UF,Aub & Tech) they will be very lucky to be 7-4.I was drooling over my prunning shears this weekend as I watched the mutts struggle to pull a win out of there lucky hat against the team that lost to a Wake Forest by 24 points , what does this say about the sec ????????? OVERATED AS USUAL !!!!!! UT will kick there butts , the score will be 40-3…..

I’m so sick of this. GT beats undefeated #11 VT, on the road and they write are we concerned we let them “hang in the game”. Last I check VT only scored one real touchdown in the 4th quarter, the other one was given to them by the officials. I’m not concerned with Reggie’s two interceptions, because we have a defense that created 2 fumbles to kick off the third quarter. VT got 6 points off those turnovers and we got 7. Things are FINALLY clicking at GT and these writers STILL give us no credit. Yes, GT is very much in the driver’s seat. I honestly believe we won’t loose to those teams that we shouldn’t, that horrible curse that GT has in seasons past.
I’m so enjoying this season. I can feel it. Good things are going to happen. I’m glad I have season tickets and I just know that we’re going to end this year with an a* kicking off UGA, end up with a great bowl, and the ACC championship game. Everyone jump on the GT bandwagon before it’s too late. And REAL GT fans, I’m looking forward to enjoying this year with you guys and the games and around town. GO JACKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
