Your memories of ‘Nique
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Dominique Wilkins is being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame tonight in Springfield, Mass.
Wilkins played 12 of his 15 NBA seasons with the Hawks and is the NBA’s ninth all-time scorer with 26,668 points. His 23,292 points with the Hawks are the franchise’s best.
But more than the statistics, Wilkins was a fan favorite for his spectacular moves and dunks. We’d like for our readers to share their favorite memories of the “Human Highlight Film.”

One thing I can say about ‘Nique is that this dude played with heart, EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. I grew up watching this man play and I’m telling you, kids in Atlanta idolized him. I’ve seen him play with the FLU(not flu-like symptoms like these cats play with today), and you can tell how badly he wanted to win. I was at the game when I was about 14 when he ruptured his achilles tendon and to see how down he was when that happened to him coming back playing the best basketball he every played in his life is a testimony to his unwavering love of the game. You can tell when somebody truly loves what they are doing and ‘Nique was that player. Congratualations ‘Nique. You more than deserve this honor.

I too remember watching Nique as young man and emulating his moves on the court. I wanted to be like ‘Nique’. His athletic abilities on the court were amazing. The power and grace he demostrated every night has never been matched. The best ever…I have the tapes to prove it. I dream of the day my son begins to love the game of basketball I have enough film to mold him into a future hall of famer.
Thanks Nique for all the memories.

He could dunk yet he couldn’t pay a bill. Check Nique’s credit and then tell me how great he was. He never paid loans or bills off and never cared to take responsibility…same ol story on the same ol culture. Jesse J. will probably nominate him for office…even scarier, he would probably get elected.

Nique is by far the greatest Hawk to ever play and the face of the franchise. Played hard and brought game every night, and overcame many of the naysayers. Because we are Atlanta and not in the Northern markets or LA, our superstars are always raked over the coals. Nique represents this city and all the slighted sports heros, Dale Murphy, Hank Aaron, Tommy Nobis and the others who haven’t ever really gotten their due! And to think we let a Lenny come here from the North and ship away our Dr.J, Larry Bird, Magic at least now he will finally get his due next to the guys he belonged with. I still can’t forgive Lenny and that regime nor USA basketball for leaving him off the original Dream Team!

Nique is my true hero growing up, both on the court and off. He’s a great man who truely deserves this honor, although overdue it is. Having him finally honored this way may not right all the wrongs he’s endured over his career, but it sure helps.
Truely a “Human highlight reel”!

No disrespect to W.Bellamy, T.Rollins, M.Malone or S.Webb. But D.Willkins is by far the best basketball player the ATL HAWKS has seen. When Stan Kasten traded Nique to the Clippers that was the saddest day in ATL sports. The Omni was the place to be in ATL and Nique made you proud to say that your from ATL… Growing up in ATL you would see Nique at the supermarket, movies, getting a haircut or just buying music at Turtles on Old National… Yes Nique chilled like a normal person. He was just like your next door buddy in College Park.
Every athlete has problems but Nique problems were public because he was a public person. I shouldn’t say every athlete, everybody has problems…
To the people that don’t like Nique, I’m sorry that you can’t understand greatness and determination… Maybe one day you will have kids that has the “WILL TO WIN” such as this man…
Congradulations into the Hall Of Fame… We miss you…

Nique is finally getting much deserved credit. First of all, how on earth can an individual rank 8th (at the time) in NBA history in scoring and not get voted as one of the top 50 players in NBA history? Secondly, The worst trade in Atlanta history was when the Hawks let Nique go to the Clippers for garbage Danny Manning. Now we NEVER sell out unless Shaq, MJ, or Kobe come to town. Congrats Nique

I’D RATHER SEE THOSE TWO PLAYERS DRIVE TO THE BASKET WHEN CLOSELY GUARDED THAN ANYTHING IN ALL OF ORGANIZED SPORTS. TRUELY ENTERTAINING, TRUELY EXCITING, TRUELY “UNIQUE”. BY JAYBEE

Congrats Nique!!! I’m looking at the pictures on ajc.com and cheezing like a chess cat happy for you on this milestone, BOUT TIME THEY RECOGNIZED YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS!!! I remember when I was 13 watching the dunk contest between you and Jordan at the Fina Gas Station on MLK Drive at I20. EVERYONE was YELLING at the TV knowing you got robbed of the crown for the ‘hometown favorite’ Jordan after he misses his dunks. That windmill was da s—- dunk!!! On the west side, to Buckhead, everyone idolized you Nique, my brother patterned his playground game after you, I wanted a pair of Brooks because of you. Congratulations on this accomplishment… (You have a beautiful family)

NIQUE IS THE MAN!!!! I grew up in Pittsburgh,PA and thanks to TBS I had to be one of the biggest Hawks and Nique fans in the world! I travled to Cleveland to see the Hawks play, I even made two trips to Atlanta to see them play when I was in high school. He is the sole reason I attended the University of Georgia and the reason I live in Atlanta today. I dont think this town or the NBA ever really realized how special he was but now he will be enshrined forever!! The Human Highlight Film!!! The Hawks are now forced to deal with the Curse of Nique. The should of NEVER traded him!!!

There are so many memories of Dominique I am not sure where to start. So I’ll start by saying Congratulations to one of the Greatest Basketball Players ever. Whether it be the shoot out between Nique and Bird in the playoffs, or the Slam Dunk contest between Nique and Spud, not to mention being a Human Highlight film, you will always be a favorite player of mine. You could light any arena back then and I still believe you could do the same today.

Mr. Lang Whitaker at an “up and coming” magazine outfit labled SLAM has epotimized what a true Dominique fan really is all about. We are a special breed because we grew up in an era where it was dominated by the EAST and particulary someone by the name of Jordan and then the badboy teams of the Pistons with the Lakers and Celtics throwing in a championship every now and then. But it was something about Dominique that made you support him, maybe because he was doing things on the court that was simply amazing, his 360 spins off the wing, his ability to explode when he was driving to the key; every time he threw up a three, sometimes you would cringe because they were ill-advised but that didn’t stop Nique from shooting.. no he was a born scorer and such a competitor. While the focus was on Jordan, he was the opposite.. he was the main man on a team that was just trying to survive and compete with the Bulls,Celtics and Pistons. There is no one more deserving to be recognized like Dominique. He was snubbed by the NBA once before with the naming of the Top 50 players but now he will forever be remembered in Springfield.

WHEN YOU DIDN’T MAKE THE TOP GREATEST 50 PLAYERS THAT WAS TERRIBLE! I STILL CAN NOT FIQURE OUT WHO YOU MAY HAVE CROSSED IN YOUR CAREER TO GET BLACKBALLED LIKE THAT. congrats nique…the human highlight film. i’m from macon and you was my jordan…yep you was robbed against mj in 88 also you was robbed against the celtics that year when you and bird went at it in gm 7 but i still remember dennis johnson traveling and the refs not calling it to force that gm 7… im 29 now but you was my reason for getting a fade and the slanted part back in the day. my biggest memory was when i saw you in person and scot skiles tried to take a charge and you jumped over him for the thunderous dunk (WOW). i had the poster of that dunk in 88 dunk contest where you stood at the free throw line and through the ball of the glass and caught it behind your head and flushed it with that awesome power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! congrats again

I watched Nique play in college with a guy from my high school named Lamar Heard they were quite a duo. I wish he had stayed a UGA for another year beacuse they may have won the final four. With Atlanta he never could get any help and carried the team to the play offs with so-so players arourd him. In the play offs all they had to do is stop him and Atl would loose. HE is ATL’s MJ or BIRD or MAJIC. So enjoy Nique you da MAN!

Dominique was the Man. i loved to watch him play i tried to copy every move he made i could do them all except that windmill. he was my favorite player i’m still mad about him getting jerked in chicago in the dunk contest, still upset about the 50 greatest player thing (they can’t be serious) and in school they teased me bad when he caught a spasm in the all-star game like i did it. congraulations Nique i feel like i accomplished something also…

Dominique lived in the condo above my parents at Camelot Club in College Park years ago, when my Dad suffered a massive heart attack. He came downstairs and stayed until everything was stabilized and Dad was in the ambulance. He was not a “star” making an appearance but a genuine, caring person. That quality, and his athletic ability, combine to make him a truly super person. Congrats to Dominique on this great honor!

I was fortunate to grow up in an era where the premier players were Bird, Jordan, and Dominique. And yes, ‘Nique did really win the dunk contest they gave to Jordan. These players were the exclaimation point to the end of REAL Basketball. Iverson, Anthony, and all these other wannabe couldn’t even carry ‘Nique’s sweaty underwear. Dominique Wilkins: The greatest Atlanta Hawk in history, the greatest slam dunk artist in history, a true NBA legend and Hall of Fame Member! God bless you, my brother.

I grew up watching Nique once a week or so at the old Omni. He gave 100% every night. Every night he’d do SOMETHING extraordinary. I’d watch the game until the very end and then run as fast as I could to get out of the parking lot before the traffic jam began. There always seemed to be a train there that would pull up and block the exit … I know they did it on purpose! CONGRATS on the Hall, Nique! You are so deserving. I grew up in Casper, WY and for some reason I didn’t want to be another kid to jump on the Jordan bandwagon—so I became a fan of who I thought was Jordan’s biggest rival at the time—Dominique Wilkins. My mom got me he his jersey for Christmas one year and I wore that thing until it was absolutely too small for me. Dominique will always have a special place in my heart— he was not Jordan— he was not Bird— nor Barkley for that matter. He was his own man— he played on a weak franchise but made it one of the top teams during his peak years. Considering his competition at the time—the golden age of the NBA— I think it is pretty impressive what he accomplished in his career! Thanks Nique— and Congrats!

My favorite of many, many great Dominique memories, is, of course, the 1988 shootout with Larry Bird in Game 7 of the Hawks-Celtics Eastern Conference semifinal series where ‘Nique scored 47 points and matched Larry Legend point for point, before the Hawks went down in the end by 2 points. It was Bird’s last truly great game(10 of 12 for 20 points in the 4th quarter). And I believe Bird once said it was the greatest game he ever played.

“DOMINIQUE is MAGNIFIQUE!” I was there for Game 6, ‘88, and thrilled then heartbroken watching Game 7. The old Omni was never louder. Growing up in the ’80s, the Hawks were the only decent pro team ATL had! You & Kevin & Spud were so much fun to watch! I moved to IL 6 years ago, but I’ll never be a Bulls fan, I’m still true to the Hawks, and feel that better days will come. Thanks for all the thrills, Nique! I grew up in Atlanta. Basketball was my favorite sport. And for a white kid, with so many negative associations made to basketball and the NBA, it was hard to explain to my family and friends how much the Hawks meant to me. They still do. But watching you throughout the 80’s and 90’s are memories I will NEVER forget.
You a truly a blessed athlete. But from what I can tell from everyone’s comments, and the one time I met you in person, you are a genuine person too.
You are more than worthy to go into the Hall. Everyone remembers you for your highlight reel dunks. But what I remember most was your contribution to those winning Hawks teams. Scoring, rebounding and leadership, you brought it every night. I hope you know this never went unnoticed.
I ordered Digital Cable just so I can watch your induction ceremony tonight. You are truly a great athlete, ambassador, and person.
Congratulations! (the most misspelled word on this blog) and drive safely back to the ATL in that RV of yours!
Now go get the Hawks a playoff spot this year!

oh yeah, forgot to add a funny story.
so my high school basketball team was playing our rivals. one of their players was an athletic, gifted player who happened to wear Dominique’s number. My friends and I began chanting “Niquers” “Niquers” because he was demolishing our team. After a few quarters, the principal came to us and escorted us out of the gym. Apparently, he thought we were using the “N” word in slang. We were so upset, we pleaded with him to allow us back in, explaining what we were yelling. I guess he didnt watch too many Hawk games, he had no idea what we were talking about.
Anyway, funny to look back at that moment. Thanks again Dominique!

The greatest Hawks of all time. One of the greatest players period. Most underrated player EVER! I’ve been a Hawks fan since I was 6. Pretty rare for a small town kid from North Dakota. It’s been twenty years now, and I wish I could turn back the clock and watch him play again. Nique has been a huge part of my life. Cried my eyes out when he was traded to the Clips. Drove 10 hours just to see my first Hawks game in 2001, and actually got to meet him. AMAZING!! Finally getting the recognition he has long deserved. Congratulations Dominique!! OUTSIDE ATL people just don’t know!!
Pretend for a moment there never was a Michael Jordan.
Dominique Wilkins would have won 10 scoring titles.
He finished 2nd to Jordan about 10 times, and Jordan wasn’t outscoring Nique by 10 or even 5 points.
It was Jordan 32/game and Nique 31/game.
How do you like him now!!!!

Dominique Wilkins the greatest player to ever suit up for the Atlanta Hawks. The franchise has never been the same since he was traded to the CLIPPERS for Danny Manning. Dominique is an icon in Atlanta and the NBA. He was robbed of the Dunk Championship in Chicago in 1988. The worst slight of all was having Dominique left off the original Dream Team along with Isiah Thomas. Hopefully going into the Hall of Fame with make up for never getting a ring. Congratulations Dominique, you truly deserve this honor and we are proud of you.

APOX ON LENNY WILKENS
At the time they traded Nique the HAWKS had the best record in the NBA Aand had already blown out the Houston Rockets twice and only twice because we only played them twice a year.
Oh yea, the Houston Rockets ended up winning the championship that year!
Thanks alot Pete and Lenny.

I am an old school guy originally from Ohio, who started watching the NBA in the late 50’s/early 60’s and have seen a number of great players and had several friends play in the NBA, and one was an assistant to Phil Jackson. Some won championships; others didn’t which did not diminish their NBA accomplishments. Dominque Wilkins NBA career is very deserving the Hall of Fame and my own personal NBA Greatest Players list!! I want to send my congradulations for receiving this honor and for how you played the game!!!!

DOMINIQUE, you are one of the best players ever. Your love for the game is always shown on your face. You have always remained calm in the midst of your ‘storms’, and I love you for that. Even when I know you were mistreated, you remained ever so positive and graceful. No longer will you be considered a “highlight film for basketball”, you are a “highlight film” for life, especially our young sport heroes. It’s okay if you cry at the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies, because you will have a lot of people crying with you — because we love you!
congratulations!, and continue being a credit to the “race” that would be the “HUMAN RACE”!

Dominique was an incredible talent in the NBA and on top of that he was a good person and family man and didn’t have to prove his manhood with corn-rows, doo-rags, tattos, gangster rap and such. He proved it on the court with his incredible skills…Dominique and the guys of his era will never be equaled anywhere anytime soon. He deserves his place in the hall as much as anyone. Another thing people might not remember about Dominique…when he signed with Georgia, instead of UNC os NC State, he was villified in the “Tar Heel State.” He even had his folks moved to Georgia if I am not mistaken, to escape the persecution they were going through. They had their house painted, trashed, vandalized, etc., all because Dominique signed to go out of state to play basketball in college…that’s how HUGE he was as a high school senior basketball player.

This honor is well deserved Dominque! I became a Hawks fan when I worked as an usherette at the old Omni, and I later became a SUPER FAN when you came to town. You were definitely a human highlight film to be admired, but you also played hard each and every game, always giving 200%, and you always tried to keep the rest of the team engaged as well. I met you in person at the club you had downtown once and I thought I would die, but I knew then you were something special. That something special later shined thru when the Hawks dissed & dismissed you and the league and some former teammates weren’t feeling you. Always the gentleman, you waited for it to all come together and come to you, and look what your ‘something special’ on the court and off has got you!! Congratulations for getting your just due ‘Nique! You’ve earned it, and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer man.

Congratulations Dominique. I have always been an Atlanta Hawks fan especially back in the day when you were playing. I loved me some Dominique! I believe we grew up around the same time (10-4-62)(smile). I was in ATL a few years ago at Lenox Mall doing some shopping with my girlfriends and you just appeared out of no where and you spoke to me and I spoke back (I was STAR struck) could not move (smile) my eyes followed you as you left the Pro Activ V booth…(smile)So when I finally gained composure I asked the salesclerk, “Was that Dominique Wilkins”? And she was like Yes and I was like darn it..I missed that Kodak moment..Oh Well such is life!
But with all sincerity, I am so happy for you and your new family!!! God Bless and Take Care

I will never forget the night back in 1987 when I was at a Buckhead Jazz Bar and Dominique was there. My friends and I approached him to say hello and ended up having a long conversation with him about college basketball. He was so friendly and engaging. The best part of the evening was when he told me of his hatred for the University of Kentuckyand their rude fans. Being a Louisville fan, this was great to hear.
Congratulations Dominique, this is long overdue!

I grew up loving basketball, the Georgia Bulldogs and every pro team in Atlanta. You will never know how happy I was when I heard the Jazz had traded Dominique to the Hawks, it was the joining of two of my favorite things. Ask Doc Rivers about Dominique and he will tell you the only difference between ‘Nique and James Worthy was that Worthy got to play with Kareem and Magic while ‘Nique had to play with Doc and Tree. The great players of that era will tell you how great Dominique is and that is what matters. The opinion of idiots like Rick Pitino (Rick Antoine Walker could a lot worse than emulate one of the greatest playes ever) and other sports gurus don’t mean squat. I think the world of Dominique I am glad he is getting finally recognized for his great accomplishments.

Congratulations, Nique! Your induction is way overdue. You are the greatest Atlanta Hawk ever and you brought joy to so many of Atlanta fans both in your exciting individual play and your leadership with the best teams the Hawks ever had.
I’d like to say hey as well to Lamar Heard. We Dawg fans will always remember you and Vern and James and the other Dawgs who took us to the final four. ‘Nique was without a doubt the greatest Dawg B-ball player ever and he electrified the old Coliseum with his play. Too bad he left in ‘82 and couldn’t stay for ‘83.
Nique, as I have never cheered for any B-ball team except the Dawgs and the Hawks, in my heart you are the greatest!
All the best on your deserved recognition.

As a 36 year-old native Atlantan, I remember when the Hawks traded John Drew to Utah for Nique (yeah he wasn’t drafted y’all). I was so excited and from that day, he never disappointed the fans of the ATL. Nique, you ARE one of the 50 Greatest, you’re a champion and you are the BEST Hawk to ever wear that uniform. ITS ABOUT TIME!!!! Growing up in Homestead, PA in the late 80’s and 90’s I was a huge NBA fan. Michael Jordan was the in thing at the time but I wanted to be different. I was at Century III Mall at a store named “J Natales” and I saw a poster that said 1985 Slam Dunk Champion Dominique Wilkins. I said who is this guy? I bought the poster and my Nique collection was started. I would watch TBS every night to see the hawks games, I bought all the Atlanta Hawks gear I could find. I bought all the UGA gear I could find (couldnt find much in pittsburgh), I even started wearing Brooks Tennis Shoes because Nique did. I had the reebok pumps and also drank Minute Maid orange soda, all because Nique did!!! It doesnt end there, I EVEN ATTENDED THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA!!! Thats right, because Nique did. I was fortunate to travel to Cleveland to see the hawks play the Cavs, I was there when the hawks came to Pittsburgh to play a pre season game against the Pistons. I got a chance to meet Nique in cleveland, I shook his hand, got his autograph and even took pictures. Too bad there was no film in my camera!! Still p** about that. But Nique you are the man and its about time you were recognized. We all know you are in the top 25 greatest players of all time and the number 1 Hawk ever!
Congrats.

Dominique,
Can you do us ALL a favor and get a DVD made with your college & pro highlights. How can you be the “Human Highlight Reel” without a DVD of your….legendary highlights. Most importantly please, please include that 1988 playoffs Games 6 & 7 Hawks and Celtics. My girlfriend (now wife)and I went crazy after you all won in Boston (HUGE!). I can’t figure out how in Game 7 Hawks (at home) were up by 20 at the half and lost!! I need to find peace and relive that game again. Get Spike Lee to do it, or somebody. Atlanta needs it for healing after your untimely trade. I also need it next to my Jordan DVDs so my sons can better understand the “Golden Era of Basketball”. We didn’t think winning 50 games in the tough Central Div. was a big deal back then. My, were we spoiled!! I think Josh Smith is the left-handed rebirth of you. His jump shot is coming on and he can jump out the gym just like you could. One knock gym rats used to say about your game was you not being able to go left and finish left. I think I remember you saying “They never stopped my right”. I hope Josh Smith has worked fanatically on his right-handed dribble and can finish with his right. Then we will truly see your spirit reborn in him. Good Luck and see you around Nique!!

Ditto to all the positive comments and I’ll pray over the negative ones. Nique, I am sending you a heartfelt THANKS. Due to my husband’s untimely death, I raised my son by myself. I remember all the nights we saw your commercial “DON”T DO DRUGS”. That commercial went a long way towards instilling in my son the negative affects of drugs. Now I can blessedly say that my 22 year old son is drug free and remembers your commercial as well as your GAME. The saddest day in sports was when you were traded. I then became a Bulls fan and to this day I can’t watch a HAWKS game. You have done alot for our youth and from one single mother I am saying THANK YOU and GOD BLESS you. You helped me help my son and instill in him strong values that still remain. ENJOY this time…. it is long overdue!!!! YOU GO BIG “D”!!!!!!!!!!

It was a real privalege to be living in the Atl back in the day,the 80’s.Sitting front row at the Omni, watching all the greats,Jabbar,Bird,Jordan,Magic,Worthy,Barkley,Malone(Moses and Karl)on and on and on…etc. My wife and I lived on Juniper, down the street from Nique’s club. His red Ferrari would be parked outside till the wee hours in the morning(4 or 5 a.m.),he partied all night long. This guy would put a Hawks uniform and have a war at the Omni and score 45,put on a dunk show playing against the greatest players, men with character, class,in a special time during the history of the NBA we will never see again. This guy deserves a key to the city, and an annual holiday. He is an awesome as an ambassador to the city,to the NBA.Has the heart of a lion.Congratulations Nique.

Congrats Dominique!!! As a native Atlantan and UGA alumni (1985),I have watched you play ball as a “dawg” & as a Hawk. It was obviuos that you always gave 110% when you were on the court. Loved watching you play at the coliseum ( when i could get a ticket), the Omni and on tv. One day at Creswell hall, my friend (Dee) and myself saw you and we jokingly ran up to you & started screaming (star struck) and asked for your autograph. You being the real guy that you are, saw the humor in our “drama” and signed the paper. Upon reading the AJC and Athens papers the next morning, you had declared your intentions to play pro ball. Sad to see you go, but super excited when you landed with the Hawks. Not suprised that you still are “real”.
We have always known that you are a super individual with a heart. CONGRATULATIONS NIQUE.

Thanks Nique for the memories from your days as a bulldog, to the magical moments at the Omni. For those that don’t know, the Magnificent Omni rocked on game night when Nique was on, which was 99% of the time. I contend the greatest NBA series was the Hawks against Boston, Nique against Bird,(warrior vs. warrior) Naismith would have been proud. Thanks again Nique this Grady baby is proud of you for your induction to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Dominique, congratulations on being selected for the Hall of Fame. You should have gotten the honor last year, but i’m so glad you have it now. You’re in my Top 50, actually Top 25, no matter what the so called experts say!
You provided me many thrills at the Omni and on TV. The most exciting play I ever saw in person was this: Spud was dribbling full-speed and you were 2 or 3 steps behind with no defenders around. When he got to about the foul line, he threw a no-look pass over his shoulder and you jammed it. The crowd went crazy!
