Parking and tailgating blues

Get ready to really grumble, Bulldog Nation. The changes to parking and tailgating festivities that UGA fans have been dreading and complaining about for months will finally be implemented Saturday for the season opener against Western Kentucky.

How have these changes altered your plans to attend home games? Or are you giving up going to commune with fellow Dawgs revelers in Athens altogether? Is it costing you more in the pocketbook to comply with these new regulations? If so, how much?

Do you think they will have the success that UGA president Michael Adams has in mind? Or does it just spoil the whole idea of cheering on your favorite team?

Parking has always been crazy, anyway. Ever since they got the cars off the sidewalks (which probably was a good idea) it has been tough to park at games. I bought a pass in the South Campus deck…that really was the way to go.

PS- Adams sucks.

I don’t know how much tailgating will be affected, but I had to prepay to park in the North Deck for all 7 homes games ($20 * 7 = $140).

That’s not a bad deal, but I will stay for 3 or 4 games and have a parking space at a downtown hotel. Last year, we could just drive up to the deck and pay $20 as needed. It just seems like a way for the university to make money, knowing that very few people will need to park in North Deck for every game.

I have no problems with the current tailgating changes: 7 AM starts are early enough for even the most fanatical, family-friendly areas address a need that many have been requesting for years. My peeve is what happened five years ago: the best spots are reserved for people who show up 45 minutes before kickoff while those REALLY want those lots are shuffled further and further away from campus. Why not shuttle the less determined tailgaters into the game from East Campus and save the premium spots for those who want them the most?

Actually we had to schedule W. Kentucky to upgrade our non-conference schedule, you see we have this game with some school at the end of the year so we had to upgrade to offset the poor oppositon we have to play in that last game.

By Not necessarily an Adams supporter

August 31, 2006 12:23 PM | Link to this

I don’t necessarily support Adams - I don’t really know enough about him one way or the other to have an opinion. But I do have a question. With all the comments about Adams trying to trash the football program, correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it Adams who pushed Dooley to hire Mark Richt? My understanding is Dooley fought to keep Donnan, and Adams basically forced him to hire Richt. If that is true, seems to me, in all fairness, you gotta’ give Adams some credit for improving the football program.

Hey Reality- out of those 85,000 rednecks, millions of dollars are given to the school each year. I don’t think it is a good move to irritate people willing to give money that want to have a good time before a home game…plus, it doesn’t matter who we are playing!

By Former Faithful Fan

August 31, 2006 12:38 PM | Link to this

The parking Nazis and president have gone too far. I know of several faithful ‘dogs who are throwing in the towel for most home games. They’ve been around for years and supported the team and the University but now it’s just too much trouble and too much money to go find a spot to park, much less tailgate. We all enjoyed the Brooks Mall area and beautiful North Campus, but now you can’t even have a beer there anymore because we’ve been pushed out and replaced by the “Family Friendly Zone”. There are far more responsible adults (who have supported the school financially and as a fan) attending games than there are children. Many of these adults enjoyed these areas with their children and, oh my, even drank a beer in front of them. Family Friendly zones are pushing people out for no good reason - if there are “rowdy” people in a tailgate area ask them to tone it down or, if needed, call the police. Too many are being penalized for the actions of a few.

The same thing goes for parking. Some folks have pulled up into nice grass or shrubbery and ruined those areas and now we can’t park anywhere except in a designated space. The truth is there are plenty of places to pull over the curb that won’t cause damage so hopefully the Univerisity won’t enfore their policy in these areas. Taking away the option of pulling up on the curb is even more discouraging. UGA Parking Services could easliy block off some curb space to handle emergency situations and let us have the rest like we have for the last 30 years. Yes, fans are pushed into the street in some places getting to and from the game, but it’s been that way for years without major incident. The bottom line is the University is sucking the fans dry for parking, etc. while lining their pockets….and they can get away with it while demand is high. In doing so, they are spitting in the faces of longtime, responsible fans who have faithfully supported the school and the athletic program.

I hope deep pocketed alumni will let there money talk (or not talk, so to speak) and band together with others to get things changed - there is plenty of room for compromise!

I can’t say that I really feel sorry for the people who have to pay $140 to park in the north campus parking deck. I have been in the RV club ever since it started. Our parking has gone up (directly from the University) a little bit every year. There was never a big increase until now, our parking went from $250 to $600 just to park for the season. If you want to have an extra car with your RV it is going to cost you $225 PER CAR!!! This will more than likely be our last season tailgating at UGA. I will drive my RV to USC, Tenn, and Auburn where you park for free. It would seriously cost me less money to drive the extra couple of hundred miles. All we want to do is support the team that we live and die for. However, Adams greedy a* won’t let that happen.

August 31, 2006 12:47 PM | Link to this

Hey Reality…Adams certainly doesn’t mind taking the money from the 85,000 rednecks. Besides, the tailgating tradition has been around a lot longer than he has.

With the new tailgating rules, I think you’re going to notice a drop in the purchase of alumni tickets, tickets in general. Nobody wants to be stuck in the parking lot known as 316 since everyone will “descend” at the same time, 7am. Many will miss part of the game, all of the tailgating, while having already lost a few hundred on season tickets. I’d rather save my money and party at home.

My friends & I have been BIG-TIME tailgaters for the last 10 years. Man, things have changed on campus! I used to park my car at the lot on the corner of Baxter & Lumpkin in 1997/1998 for free the night before the games(with a keg inside of course). This year we bought a North Campus parking deck since we plan to tail-gate on North Campus. In my opinion, Pres. Mikey Adams has made it more difficult for people without a whole lot of money or connections to enjoy tailgating at UGA football games. I consider myself & fellow tailgaters very lucky. Once Adams is out, I believe we can get some things changed on campus for home football games. I’ll give him another 3 years at the most. Once he is out, hopefully the next President will be more football friendly.

I grew up going to Florida State football games and they have always required parking passes. When I started going to UGA in the 90s, I thought it was awesome that they had so much “free” parking. I’m now a season ticket holder at UGA and I have to pay to park. I think it’s the simple fact that UGA is finally catching up with the rest of schools that charge for parking. Don’t get me wrong, I wish it was free. Personally, I pay to park at a church downtown. I’d rather support them as long as I’m paying to park.

GA Tech is overrated. Thus, their snobby attitude is entirely without merit. True story: Last week, in my office, a GT grad had an argument with her UGA grad boss. GT insisted that there was no such word as “formerly,” that the word meaning previously was: “formally.” UGA grad had to get the dictionary to prove how ignorant the GT graphics dunce was.

If you want a place to park, with your money going to a good cause, park at Clarke Central High School at the corner of Milledge and Baxter. $20 per car with a security guard on duty at all times. No restrictions other than you are asked to pick up your trash. The proceeds support the athletic programs at the high school and the different sports teams take turns manning the gates. It’s just up the hill from Sanford Stadium.

Former Faithful Fan you make some great points. The only thing about trying to rally the “big money alumni” is that the “big money alumni” doesn’t mind what is happening. In fact I am sure there are more than a few that encouraged it.

The “big money alumni” want to get their parking spot within 500 feet of the gate, show us in just enough time to get their Rascal and oxygen tanks hooked up and then complain about, “the kids these days”.

My point is they have had the parking they wanted for years and none of this affects them except that it probably makes traffic for them to come and go much better.

As for Professor Higgins I really found your story to be pointless and not very entertaining.

Paid parking is actually better now, and how many free parkers are we talking about, 300, that can’t tear up the campus grass now? Its not like 25,000 people now have no place to park . I would bet money 99% of the b*** never parked in the spots affected anyway. By week 3 we wont hear another word about it. Just another uninformed way to bash MA. RFP -

Nobdy had to buy all 7 home games to park in the North Deck - you could pay $20 the day of each game (i.e - take your chances). The key is that if you did buy all 7 game($140 up front)you are guaranteed a spot for each game, no matter what time you show up. I paid $20 on game day each game last year in the North Lot and had no problems whatsoever. Just get there early this year since they are making the “die hard” drunks start partying after 7am.

And, I have no problem with the well heeled, big shot alumni getting the premium spots close to the stadium no matter what time they arrive. UGA, and all other schools, live by the golden rule - he who has the gold, rules!

Not only that, but he didn’t even fire Donnan to his face. He’s burning bridges left and right. It doesn’t matter though, because the fans are going to drink wherever they are. Even though only 92,000 can get in the game there are over 100,000 people that go to the tailgate parties. good luck arresting everyone!

I am a big-time tailgater as well. I have tickets to all the home games and all the away games. I drive to some and fly to some and I consider myself part of a large economic engine that drives growth, jobs, and education at the University of Georgia. The harder Mr. Adams makes it for me to enjoy my Saturday’s in the fall the less likely I am willing to spend the money that have driven the recent growth. My pockets are deep for the things that I love but my patience is at an end.

Why would the University have the fifth largest stadium in the United States with fewer and fewer parking ‘places’ every year? Why would Mr. Adams tear down a tradition of tailgating? Where does Mr. Adams think will happen to all those people who can’t find a parking spot or unwilling to pay for a reserved spot? In the past ten years I’ve seen tailgating become a fun activity to a ‘worrisome’ behavior by Mr. Adams. Let me see how ‘worrisome’ Mr. Adams thinks of my closed wallet.

I think some of you who are continuing to whine about Adams are missing the big picture as far as the university and sports programs are concerned. True, I am no Adams fan or supporter, yet the facts are that except for the initial blip on the giving screen (and the associated grumbling) when Adams “retired” Dooley, the money to the university and the sports program has NOT shrunk - didn’t I read where this year’s giving to the university set records, and the athletic department led the nation in NET PROFIT of all large universities, after all bills were paid for ALL sports teams?

Seems like many of you are living in a dream world when you think Adams may be gone soon (only if he retires) or that the university cares what you think - the people with the “gold” still give, and will continue to do so as long as the DAWGS continue to win or tie! Besides, at what level do you get a free parking pass with your season tickets?

You are arguing against your own crusade - if UGA is alloting 10% of the North Deck for game day drive up business, then you did not have to buy a yearly pass. They are charging the same $20 per game as last year, so the only way for the university to “get some extra money” would be to charge somebody more money than they did last year! If they sold out the deck on a game by game basis last year at $20 per spot, and are charging the same $20 per spot this year (either yearly of on game day), how are they making “extra” money? Your math is giving the ‘haters’ amunition!

I understand YOU feel you are being taken advantage of - but that is YOUR problem. If you will be staying downtown for three or four games and do not need the parking spaces in the deck for those games, you can probably sell them to friends if you really want your money back - otherwise, remember, you will have a guaranteed space in the deck, no matter what time you arrive. Otherwise, you should have counted on “arriving early” and paying the daily $20 fee rather than opting for the yearly rate that you may not need and for which you feel you are being taken advantage!

Don’t complain about the newest UGA parking/tailgating guidelines - here is are the posted rules for tailgating on the Colorado State website…we have it good in Athens!

Stadium security personnel will have an enhanced presence in the parking lots with authority to evict fans who violate any of the tailgate guidelines. All beverages must be in aluminum cans or plastic containers- no glass..or kegs. The resposible and controlled use of alcoholic beverages will be permitted in the stadium parking lots as permitted by law. STADIUM PARKING LOTS WILL OPEN 3 HOURS PRIOR TO KICKOFF. TAILGATE PARTIES MUST CLOSE 30 MINUTES BEFORE KICKOFF WHEN FANS BEGIN TO ENTER THE STADIUM Fans are encouraged to decorate tailgate spaces in a manner that is safe, in good taste, and adds to the festivity of theevent. ALL DECORATIONS MUST BE REMOVED PRIOR TO THE GAME and then the ususal no alcohol may be brought into the stdium.. HOWEVER>>>>they do sell beer at the stadium - one to a customer with ID check for hand stamp or wrist band and all beer sales close at the start of the 2nd half.

Yeah - We are doing OK in Athens..

Y’all:

Read the website. A lot of what you are complaining about isn’t a problem. Deck parking costs stayed the same, you can just prepay now (FYI, North Campus Deck still has spaces available). Large groups can still tailgate, as long as they don’t have bartenders and fences. Parking will change, but it won’t be a big deal, and having one-car, one-spot should open up some spots in free lots that people took up with SUVs and trailers. The family friendly areas aren’t perfect, I’ll grant that. But overall, Altamaha Dawg nailed it — by week 3, we won’t hear another word on it.

This isn’t the first time they’ve screwed with tailgating and parking and probably won’t be the last. What chaps me is that they say they are doing it in the interest of public safety & to preserve the campus. Of course it’s always about money. Those “gouge me” decks that everyone is being forced into can be parked in all day Sunday-Friday for $8. Funny how the price almost triples on game day in the name safety & beauty. Charge the posted price or at least be honest & admit “all we want is your money!”

Well, this is sensationalistic nonsense. I DON’T CARE. I’m a season ticket holder, and will cope as always. The reality is that all of these changes are a response to an increase in demand. What’s funny is that all of the dipsnots who were whining about not winning enough football games are not whining about not having anywhere to park. Hilarious.

Somebody above said it, but it’s worth saying again - all of you who puff out your chests and rage against Adams are wasting your time. For every “fan” who stops going to games because “he dared to change my tradition”, there are 2 more waiting for your seat.

Didn’t anyone learn anything from the “Fire Adams because he forced Dooley to retire” effort a few years ago? All that “we’re more powerful than Adams” blustering resulted in absolutely nothing. Adams is still here, UGA is more nationally recognized than ever in many ways, and Dooley still stepped down as AD w/o a contract extension at that time. Meanwhile Adams fund-raising sets new records every year.

I’m not saying I love or support Adams, but all you woe-is-me I’m gonna take my picnic and stay home people are really funny, when you flatter yourselves by thinking a few people being angry over where they park/tailgate really matters to anyone but yourselves.

So go ahead, stop going to the games in Athens because you can’t park, drink and do as you please the way you always have…trust me, Adams won’t notice you’re not coming any longer, and my seat will only get better next season!

I don’t know what you guys are complaining about - at Clemson there are only two main roads leading into the city that 85,000 + have to follow. At least in Athens the 92,000 + have 8 - 10 ways to get to the stadium! But, the parking in Clemson is free, as each season ticket holder also gets a parking pass. Alas, the Clemson season tickets and individual game tickets cost more than UGA tickets, so it is probably a wash, cost wise!

The funniest rule is that you cant run a big ol 30amp over to government owned building and pirate electricity anymore. I understand why, I was just struck with the question, did we realy need a rule like that? Obviously somebody was doing it.

How many of you complainers actually went to the universtity website to see the rules in thier entirety? Or do you just beleive complaining somehow proves your loyalty to Vince Dooley.(which is all you Adams bashers really cared about, and half couldnt name the last 2 presidents) Where was all this outrage 10 yrs ago when any blowhard who thought thier opinion mattered was calling for Dooley to get out. Now its just easy to jump on the bash Adams Bandwagon. The man is a egotist in seriously need of a PR department, but upset over parking rules???? come on.

DrH , the silly thing is that I dont think I have heard anyone say how they actually do any of the things not allowwed now, just how dare he say I can’t. I was pretty shocked last year to discover you could still jump your SUV up on campus lawns. (I always parked north end and downtown hotels)What are we talking, less than a 1000 spots affected? The only rule I see that might be an actual issue is the time limit, but I bet that effects very few. Go down to the intermural fields at 3;30 am if you must and then you will be right there at 7 when the streets open. Adjust people. I was much more peeved when the City of Athens restricted some of my ol favorites years ago, which affectly plenty times more than this change. If you read, there are many more free parking spots opening this year, albeit further away, but you can still get mud on your tires if you must. Or you know what they say, either dont go or shut up and pay the man.

I worked at UGA for several years and had plenty of exposure to Mike Adams….his greed is amazing. He doesn’t care about the students, why would he care about football fans? He’s always maintained the position that UGA is an academic instution, not a football program. I’m sure he’d cut the football program if he could get away with it.

But, he brings so much money to the instution through the alumni and donations that he’ll never be fired.

Kevin it started out that way, (although I did challenge you to prove how he has been bad for football at UGA). The problem is, folks like us take a shot at him jokingly becasue its funny. But there is a whole bunch of folks who constantly bash the man personally and seriously,no matter how silly the matter, claiming to have the best interest of thier university at heart. Ironic if you ask me. I can certainly understnd not liking the guy, he doesnt seem likeable, but i get fed up with the uninformed wagonjumpers repeating the same ol crap about him running the university (or rather thier football team that just happens to be so inconveniently attached to a state public university) into ground, when I can’t see any evidence of that. Then of cource it irks me to have the AJC paper print such a non issue story.

Tech parking instructions are now available in Hindi, Farsi and Chinese so the majority of students can read them. Tech Terrorist Parking is an additional $10 and mini-vans full of explosives must stay in the yellow zone. Vest suicide bombers are requested to wait until after halftime to detonate so that no Tech fans will be injured. Fans toting 100 pounds of marijuana will receive free parking as well as 9 months probation (personally - the team is already on probation). As an added bonus, with each mandatory purchase of 2 unwanted tickets with each wanted ticket Tech fans will receive 2 hours of free counseling to combat depression (available Thursday and Saturday nights only). For Tech students, one luck coed will win her choice of free vaccinations or $10,000 in plastic surgery (estimated cost to get to ‘normal looking’), and one luck male will win a year’s worth of Clearasil (estimated value - $3,000). Tech fans are encouraged to carpool since you will be going to the games alone. Starting with the loss to Notre Dame, fans will be encouraged to coach the team since Gailey isn’t doing it anymore. Good luck and see you in Toronto.

Update: Most big money alumni do not park on campus. They gourge and drink at the presidential mansion and ride their combinations of buses and vans to the back gate 10 minutes before the game starts.

also, if u don’t think they can enforce all of the parking areas, think again. I saw them tow almost 100 cars during one game for parking violations. There was a convoy of tow trucks ( i counted 20 different ones) called in and most of them could pull 2 cars at a time. It was really funny to see the car alarms going off dragging behind a rollback. I also saw them tow off an illegally parked rv on river road and leave the grill and picninc table there.

Hey Lake Rat, I am a Clemson season ticket holder, and you do not get a free parking pass for being a season ticket holder. You must join IPTAY to get preferred parking and your parking lot is determined by your level of contribution. The least amount that qualifies for a pass is $350. There are numerous free lots at Clemson, but better get there early for big game days. And ALL students get a FREE ticket to ALL home games!!!

Tigerama -

Just $350 annually to join IPTAY at Clemson and you get to purchase season tickets AND get a free parking pass? No wonder they charge more for season tickets than UGA! At UGA, a $350 contribution MAY OR MAY NOT allow you to buy tickets, and you have to give at least $2500 annually to get a parking pass! But, at least at UGA you have several alternatives to get to the games rather than just 4 roads in like at Clemson (one from Anderson, one from Seneca, one from Lake Keowee - I think - and one from Greenville)!

I think the bigger issue that no one seems to be talking about is the fact that the University has scheduled more and more night games in recent years (to accommodate paying TV at the expense of traveling fans). The “despicable” crowd and trash cited by Adams at the infamous Auburn game last year was not because it was a “big game” but rather because the game was at 8pm. When 80,000+ fans tailgate for 12 hours, you are going to have increased issues with crowds and trash. If we really want to create a safer environment, how about sticking to 12:30 and 3:30 games? I don’t quite see how forcing your fan base drive home in traffic at 2 and 3am in the morning fits into a responsible “Gameday Gameplan”.

Thank God Adams isn’t at the healm of Tennessee. The way he views tailgating, he’d shut down the river and require the “Volunteer Navy” to dock their boats in the Atlantic Ocean. Quit screwing the fans, Adams. A majority of the season ticket holders have been attending football games long before you came to Athens and will continue their tailgating traditions long after you’ve left. Hopefully the next president will have the common sense to understand what tradition means to Dawg faithful who pump a load of cash into the university andthe Athens economy each fall.

I haven’t researched this, but the UGA police should provide some solutions for an ever increasing problem. There just isn’t enough room on campus to accommodate 90,000 fans plus the students. While the stadium was being expanded, it appears no thought was given to this growing issue.

If there were UGA sponsored buses and/or affordable trains from Atlanta and surrounding suburbs it would really help the situation. I know I would take advantage of this type transportation, just to avoid the hassle. We had a train for a while, but it was extremely expensive and the service was very bad. I think someone did not want that to work.

This has caused our group to sell our tickets. We are going to ride out this season and see what happens…

This is how I see it: Yes, some of the new rules and regulations suck. There’s no way around it. But new rules and regulations are NOT AN EXCUSE to stop going to games or stop being a Dawgs fan. Whining and complaining about it is going to get you nowhere. I think of it like this: If 70 to 80,000 or more people will drive to downtown Atlanta, deal with the horrible traffic, pay out of the wahzoo for parking, if they can find any, and pay that kind of money to go to an Atlanta Falcons game, and even then still find time and a place to tailgate…the Dawgs fans have NO RIGHT WHATSOVEVER to complain. If you are a Dawgs fan, you just deal with it - if the Dawgs support the new rules, then you should too. Believe it or not, there are actually valid reasons for the changes. It’s not about how much money you have spent or will be spending. In other words, it’s a MUCH larger pain in the butt to go to a Falcons game, park, tailgate, etc…yet Falcons fans don’t complain…so I don’t want to hear the BS from Dawgs fans. Save your growling for the game!!! GO DAWGS!!!

I went to a couple of games last year, trying to scope it out and see if I could take my kids. There is no way that I would take my kids under the current situation. I have never seen so many drunk people. If you want to drink, go to a bar. If you want to see a football game, go to the game.

Recreation fields not for tailgating Published , August 23, 2006, 06:00:01 AM EDT

When one thinks of University of Georgia athletics, the Ultimate Frisbee team does not leap to mind.

Our football program — igniting genuine electricity throughout campus every fall — definitely comes to mind as well as our basketball, baseball, gymnastics and other nationally recognized teams with their respective championships.

But what distinguishes athletics at the University is not the success of our “big sport” teams, with their millions of dollars in scholarships, facilities and coaches’ salaries. What makes athletics at Georgia so special is its accessibility to every student whether they are on a scholarship or not.

The Ramsey Center is a state of the art facility. The Recreational Sports Complex boasts miles of wooded trails, 15 tennis courts and 35 acres of playing fields.

These fields host intramural competitions, club team practices and pick-up games in a wide range of sports. Access to all of it is yours whether you’re here on athletic scholarship or not.

We’re lucky to attend a school with such concern for our health and happiness, but many of the Rec Fields will be used for parking during home football games this year.

Some argue that this won’t cause lasting damage to the fields.

They are wrong.

A few years ago, Clemson opened many of its recreational fields to parking. The results were disastrous. Bottle caps, chicken bones and broken glass blanketed the ground.

Cars tore up the fields, leaving them scarred all the way up to the next football season. That might happen here.

The fields will be affected year-round for a minor increase in convenience for a handful of people on a few Saturdays.

You probably already know about two huge sports events coming to Athens this fall. The football team hosts Tennessee on Oct. 7 and Georgia Tech on Nov. 25. You can bet I’ll be at both those games, heckling some Pumpkins and Mosquitoes.

But I’ll be playing, instead of watching, my favorite sport on another weekend — the biggest autumn weekend for college Ultimate Frisbee.

Jojah, the men’s Ultimate Frisbee team, had its best season ever last year. Only two teams in the country earned more wins than our 45 wins.

We capped it off by placing third at the College Championships in Columbus, Ohio, upsetting Colorado in an epic 17-16 quarter final game.

Offensive captain Dylan Tunnell finished third in votes for the Callahan Award — the Heisman Trophy of college Ultimate — and this year we’re going to be even better.

On Nov. 4-5 at the Recreational Sports Complex, Jojah hosts the Classic City Classic, a preseason tournament that draws top Ultimate Frisbee programs from around the country.

It’s kind of like the Preseason National Invitational Tournament of Frisbee. Rivals like the Universities of Colorado, Florida and Wisconsin will be there — if our fields are in shape to play.

Many of the players will be good athletes. Some will be great. None will be on athletic scholarship but all will compete at the highest level. That is the source of greatness for University of Georgia athletics.

Here, every student can compete athletically at a high, organized level.

Whether your sport is baseball, football, rowing, rugby, lacrosse or Ultimate, there is a team or a league for you here.

We should defend the Rec Fields like we would defend the Hedges, because both are sacred sites in our amazing athletic program.

In addition to our club team, Jojah runs a fall league, open to all students. In the spirit of this article, I invite you to come out and play.

Try-outs for the team are in October. Visit www.uga.edu/ultimate, or come out to our beloved Field 6 in the Recreation Sports Complex tomorrow (Aug. 24) at 6:00 p.m. for a pick-up game and more information.

Fans are at UGA Football games to watch a football game, experience the positive atmosphere of college football, not to party all out until they compromise the enjoyment and experience of others at the game. Hey, the administration is just saying; keep it controlled with the consumption, there will be family areas for future bulldogs to come with Dad’s without the rowdyness. Oh yea, safety is a big word in everyday life now, so enjoy a cool one or a stiff one just keep it functional.Sounds to me that this is a good thing, and a compromise to what could been alot harser ruling with the past problems.

The honest truth is that the whole Bulldog thing peaked in about 1981. The best thing I got in my divorce was NOT having to go to those boring games any more. What a yawn! 75% of the arrogant jerks in the entire state, all gathered up in one hot, fetid stadium (talk about a target!). Couldn’t pay me enough to go there any more.

Maybe they should let revelers park on the president’s yard on Prince Avenue — there’s no fear of future flag footballers receiving injuries there. And let’s put a vomitorium and ATM next to the Arch for the convenience of the drunks and armed robbers. Hope the Dogs go 1-11 this year, just beat Florida!

These constant changes to the “rules of tailgating” at UGA are quite frustrating! If you didn’t pay the $500 minimum donation and purchase the minimum 2 season tickets for a grand total of at least $948 per year, then you may not mind tailgating far off campus or paying additional money to be close to the stadium. But I’m 26 years old and I can’t afford to continually “donate” money to a university that seems to be pushing me farther and farther from campus.
I loved my 4 years at UGA, and look forward to football season not only to watch the Dawgs play ball, but to reunite with old friends and classmates. For many of us Athens is where we became true adults. You grow and change more between the ages of 18 and 22 than any other time in your life, and returning to the Classic City that made us the business men and women that we are today (not rednecks, thanks) is something we cherish every year. And we shouldn’t be punished for the actions of a few who were probably under the age of 21 or non-alumni.
And for those who say “who cares, it’s western kentucky,” after my “donation” to the GEEF and the cost of my tickets, I paid approximately $135.43 per game (before parking), and that gives me the right to complain about any one of them I choose!
Love MY Dawgs, hate the Administration!!!

The only people with a real complaint are the red-necks who want to get drunk and wasted at their pickups. Safety was non-existent last year. As the article stated, medical staff couldn’t respond to emergencies. Go to the game, watch it, then get your @ss home. What’s so hard to figure out about that? UGA has become the laughingstock of the SEC because of all the uproar about it. Get a life people - you are supposed to go to the game to watch it, not get passed-out drunk.

Every year the administration does whatever they can to further their “no-fun zone”. They see people having all this fun that they were never able to have because they werent invited to those type of parties. This upsets them, so in return they suck every bit of culture and tradition they can out of Athens. You may fine us more but we are just gonna get drunker and more obnoxious. Dig it.

This is probably not a term you are familiar with(It hasnt been discovered at Georgia Tech yet). Perhaps you would feel a little more comfortable at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

  • Big bags of money, or
  • Lick Mike Adams’ shoes clean and then whisper in his ear how great he is for an entire day, or
  • Park miles from the stadium.

    September 1, 2006 03:20 PM | Link to this

How has this ruined tailgating? You always had to pay for the parking decks, but now you can conveniently lock in a spot all year. Large contributers have had the best parking spots close to the stadium for five or six years now, so that’s nothing new. You can still park prior to 7 AM, you just can’t set up tents and grills. I think a lot of Georgia fans would be well served to stop trying to keep up with neighbors by having p*ssing contests over who can pack in the most junk at their tailgate. You don’t have to have couches, you don’t have to have TVs, and you can leave your trailers at home. I’ve been a minimalist tailgater for years: a bag chair, a cooler, and a sandwich. Park the car, walk to the shady area near Legion Pool. If anything, the new rules have made my life easier. Treat tailgating as a chance to hang out with your friends and family and not as an opportunity to prove how big of a fan you are buy displaying the most junk. Get over it.

I just want to say that I have a parking pass and I don’t drink alchohol at games, but I still hate the way Adams has done our Gameday.I may give up my parking pass by contributing the minimum to GEEF to keep my tickets yet not enough for the pass because Adams now takes credit for Athletic Donations in his fund - raising. After the Dooley firing I pledged to NOT give to the Georgia fund except GEEF until he was gone. I have lived up to that and will continue to do so. Did you see that Damon Evans gave $2 million to the general university fund from the athletic fund for Adams pleasure for scholarships(sic). Michael Adams is a monster and the elected officials in the Board of Regents need to be held accountable for their poor judgement. I will never go back to a game at UGA. It was one of the games I looked forward to year after year. Now there is a gauntlet created for opposing fan’s to endure getting into the stadium. I have had drunk grown men bark into my wife and older childrens face as we tried to quietly ease down the road. It has gotten out of hand and I hate to see the reputation of UGA trashed by these fan’s who probably have never seen the inside of the classroom.

OK, folks, plain and simple. UGA is overrated and plays a pansy schedule. Mark Richt is an arrogant jerk, like most UGA fans. Vince Dooley retired VOLUNTARILY. Larry Munson sounds like he has a mouthful of sand. UGA Fans are obnoxious, drunken idiots. Fire engine red is not an attractive color for football uniforms. I attend UGA and am a lifelong football fan, but it is hard to like UGA football.

It’s death by a thousand cuts. If you make it more difficult to tailgate people will eventually quit coming. GA football is not the symphony or a night at the FOX. It is six or seven Saturdays a year; it is religion and people wait the entire year for it. By punishing those who don’t have the means to get the prime spots and who used to beg borrow and steal to get those spots you are killing your next generation of loyal fans. Remember in the early ‘80’s when we thought the good times would never end and then Jan Kemp happened. We paid dearly in the middle 90’s with a couple of 6-5 and 5-6 teams under Goff. I remember half-empty stadiums against Arkansas and Auburn when we were mediocre. It can happen again. The only thing that kept people coming back to Athens week after week was the tradition. Take that away and you better win 10 games a year every year. A word to the AD and Prez: Fleece your well-healed fans and disregard your loyal fans at your peril.
