Forum: Falcons hammered

The Falcons were thrashed by the Packers 38-10 Saturday night in an exhibition game.

What went wrong? What did you see that really concerns you? Did you see any positives, other than it only being a preseason game?

I can really do without the lenghty Arthur Blank interview. How many times do they need to show highlights from Piedmont Park? This interview has been going on for over 20 minutes. The play calling for Shockley is terrible. When are they going to let him throw to Norwood in the flat. Two runs up the middle and 3rd and long. Boring!

Hey DAWGS,

Brilliant observation!! If a UGA guy doses not succeed, it must be the play calling.

Great “new” defense, huh? Some things never change. As much as I really wanted to hope some positive changes on D were forthcoming, it sure as hell still looks like the same defensive nightmare you can’t wake up from. Of course, 3 INT’s don’t exactly help. Does anyone know the number for 911?

It’s going to be another long year for the mediocre falcons. But, Mike Vick can run around real fast!!! Jim Mora will be here a couple of more years than get fired, like all atlanta coaches. He has no clue about winning at this level.

Here’s the deal - Favre and Javon Walker connected well, as you would expect for a pro-bowl QB and his main receiver. That’s a duo that will be solid this season, and the Falcons couldn’t handle it at times. HE’S a HALL OF FAME QB people!!

The play calling wasn’t that bad. It’s pre-season. Mora isn’t gonna let his best plays, or his true season gameplan, out of the bag this early.

The Falcons will have a solid year. Vick looked strong, the defense improved. All is well in Falcon-land.

It’s funny how you Falcon fans are so fickle, after last week’s game you guys and every sports talk radio host here had Vick and the boys in the Super Bowl this year…..Get a grip, it’s only pre-season. The real test doesn’t start until Sep. 10 in Charlotte.

Not Javon Walker - I meant Donald Driver.

Anyway, the Falcons will be okay this season. Tough division, and a brutal schedule though. Mora will be here for a few more years, and frankly, that’s a good thing.

I don’t care if it was preseason. They did not play like a championship team. I do not see the patriots playing like that, even in preseason. The falcons defensive line is too small and their linebackers do not attack the ball or push people back. rather they always seem to get dragged for extra yardage.

For everyone who is crapping all over the Falcons after tonights loss to GB, please, PLEASE remember…its PRE SEASON!!!

Vick and the starting offense looked good ( if you can call them the starting offense, no Crumpler, no Dunn, etc ).

The linebackers have yet to play together with all of the injuries. Brooking was out tonight, and Boley got a little banged up, will he be out next week…who knows.

Basicly at this point, I am crossing my fingers about D-Hall. Seeing him on his back for that long, then going into the tunnel made me sick. Good to hear its a ankle sprain, but how bad is it?

Man what a HIT by Crocker…it nearly knocked me off my couch!!!!

After tonight, is everyone still chanting “Shockley for starter”? Little different story this week vs. last week…but I still think he will be our 3rd QB (and remember, I am a Tech fan, my judgement on Shockley is not clouded like the Bulldog faithful).

Norwood was not as impressive as last week, although I still think we have a huge weapon of the future with him. His burst of speed are unreal…but keep Duckett for now.

With that being said, we do need a reciever. Pathon, when a ball hits you in the hands…catch it. Hopefully a good reciever will be cut soon and McKay can be quick to pick him up.( and for all of those who say trade for McCarriens, he may be cut by the Jets as well, so wait a little longer. I think someone will fall in our laps. )

Next week, we should see more of the starters and we will know a little more about what we still need to address prior to Sept 10.

I cant wait until next week…Vick vs. Vince…AWESOME!! GO D-Birds!!!

For all those people worring about the falcons losing a PRESEASON GAME are either half hearted fans, didn’t watch the game, or was watching the game and not paying attention. Well I watched the game and was paying attention and there was alot of positives I saw out of this game. For one Vick was comfortable in the offense, more comfortable than he was last week which means nightmares for the rest of the league. Second, the first team offensive line played incredible they were balanced, something that they weren’t last season. The offensive line picked up the blitz and were blocking the ends and gave Vick 4 to 5 seconds on every play to throw the ball. Third, run defense was a hell of alot better than it was last week. The first team defense was shuting down Danvenport. Fourth, DID ANYONE SEE THE HIT THAT CHRIS CROCKER PUT ON THAT RECEIVER, THAT MAN BRUNG THE KNOCK KNOCK TO THE DOOR. That hit shows me that the safeties are going to set a tone every time they step on the field and bring a toughness to the defense that it needs. And lastly, Michael Jenkins picked up where he left off last week and Roddy White picked up his play and played well. If you put all those postives together it sounds like a team that is going to do alot of damge in the NFL this season. HALF HEARTED FANS CALM DOWN, DIE HARD FANS SEE YOU IN MIAMI WHEN THE FALCONS BEAT THE STEELERS IN OVERTIME TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL.

First off * I AM A FALCON FAITHFUL * If they go 8-8 this year with the schdule it will be real good, M. VicK is a wonderful football player, but not a QB, This town will NEVER have a superbowl win with Mike Vick as the QB under Jim Mora. He just don’t have it. Brett Farve at nearly 50 looked 100 times better as a OB than Vick did in this system. HE done better under Revees and he got FIRED there went our SUPERBOWL!

I know that people are going to come on this blog and talk about all the passing yards the defense gave but if they were paying attention they would have known that Brett Favre and the first team offense stayed in the game all of the first half and part of the third quarter playing against the falcons 2nd and 3rd string defense, just something to think about before Tito the panthers fan come on this blog and try to critisize what the falcons did wrong.

Now I’m glad the game wasn’t shown in the New Orleans area and I had plans…

I’ll take a good old cajun wedding over a debacle ANY day.

What is with this bunch? Apparently they still can’t stop the run, give up too many passes, and Vick is as overrated as always. If we’re ONLY talking about how great the kicker is, we’re in for a LONG SEASON!

I don’t forcast a snowballs chance in hell vs Carolina opening day, and after the first 3 games of the season it is VERY possible we’ll be 0-3 in the division too…

Looks like I’ll just have to enjoy the game of football this season; rather than stay bummed out on how miserable “MY team” plays every week.

It worked this season for the Braves…I found I just enjoy watching the game itself; rather than a specific team.

Having said that, i’m actually not too worried about the regular season. I can remember a few years back where both Glanville & June Jones teams’ had undefeated preseasons…and they finished way below .500 when it counted…

HEY EVERYONE!!!!! IN CASE YOU DIDN’T NOTICE!!!!

Green Bay left their STARTERS in pretty much the WHOLE NIGHT!!!

That had a lot to do with the score.

Not to mention 2 lucky bounced around passes that they came up with for TDs.

Also we had many starters who didn’t play.

PRE-SEASON means nothing—and

REMEMBER a couple of years ago we got beat 56-10 by KC during the season and stilll went to the NFC Championship game!!!!

We’ll get at least that far this year!

As for Shockley, I was disappointed with the RUN, RUN, PASS obvious play-calling while he was in there

I know I’m a DAWG fan but he looked much better than Randall who spent his time fumbling and getting sacked!

Why should I care how the Falcons players produce….they don’t. Big salaries and little work has to be reversed. Vick has reached his limit playing QB. Give him some receivers and a decent line and let him throw instead of being a running back and he will go past his limit.

By Darrin

Its rough being a fan in the ATL, BUT this fan is staying down. Look, GRN BY left their starters in vs our 2nd/3rd string, plus those crazy deflections were enough to make this look worse than it was. Vick looked nice, Hartwell FINALLY showed up, and the rcvrs showed a little something. I’ll admit, I’m still concerned about the “D”, but not as much as before. The starters played with some added passion, but still gave up too much on trick plays. I know the coaches would have done something diff if this was reg season. We’ll be ok if we continue to focus on defense, the bench needs to pick it up though or things could get bad fast. We still have a couple of games to fine tune things, but I will judge harder with the next game vs Titans and Jax. Just out of pride, they need to put the foot on the pedastal a little harder and longer these next two. Hope D-Hall is ok, they need to put him up on the shelf, rest of pre-season, we don’t need him out for any period of time come reg seas. Just make the rest of pre-season w/o major injuries and work on “D” and we can do this. Don’t trade Duckett just yet! Norwood has potential but is a rook. Look folks, we played without Dunn and Brookings or the entire 1st string as a unit for more than the first couple of series and Favre and co did all the way to the 3rd qtr. Add in deflections and things looked pretty bad, but I believe they are better that and they still need to get that hustle on vs the run, that’s still my biggest concern. We have to get that right with DeShaun Foster, DeAngelo Williams, Reggie Bush, and worst of all Cadalliac Williams lurking in the NFC South. We don’t fix that, it won’t matter how well Vick plays, DEFENSE wins championships!! GO FALCONS

So which way is it going to be people? When the Falcons win a preseason game it’s a sign of how good they are and testament to the fact that they’re going to the Super Bowl.

But now that they lose one it’s a meaningless game that we shouldn’t pay attention to.

Maybe management shouldn’t have given Vick more money then he deserved and spent a chunk of change on the other “skilled” positions and instead invested a bit more on the defensive side of the ball and added some much needed depth.

One or two injuries on defense and this season is pretty much over.

One thing about Brett Favre is he usually bounces back with a good game after looking bad. Combined with the fact that he looked awful last week against SD, and terrible all last season, he had a lot to prove to his fans that he shouldn’t have stayed retired. He wanted to cme back for another year, and his coaches gave him tons of time in this game to prove himself against 2nd and 3rd stringers. I think he’s one of the best of all time, and was glad he looked decent, but disappointed in the overall play of our secondary. Two miscues made the difference in having just a loss and looking pitiful. But, it’s preseason! So, wait until week two of the NFL to judge. Even if they lose their first two games, there’s plenty of time to make the playoffs - and this Bird Fan says they’ll be there this year. GO BIRDS!

You know it’s pretty pathetic to see so many folks hit a panic button over a preseason game. And how depressing some other folks are,go find some depression medicine and follow another team.

I can remember the Cowboys back in their hey days losing all 4 preseason games, but yet win it all.For the intelligent folks out there that says ” it’s preseason” you are true fans of the game.

I’m glad the Packers left Favre and their starters in until the 3rd quarter with 8 minutes left,it only helped evaluate the younger guys.4 tipped passes that went the Packers way, they should’ve won.3 went for TDs.

And all this crying about a #3 wideout….in case some haven’t noticed,Crumpler has yet to step on the field this preseason.Their is your starting “pass catcher” then Jenkins and White.Trading a RB for another unproven, broke down WR is not the answer. If your gonna deal Duckett,do it for some depth at safety in case Milloy or Crocker go down.

The run defense by the 1st unit was alot better.

And the whine and cheese about play calling,it’s never the players fault on something called execution.Alot of you need to have gotten up early this morning and watch the replay of the game on NFL network. But then again, with the thought process and depression most have,I guess that’s asking alittle to much.My bad.

And as for Tito the Tard and the rest of the Panther fans…..if you wasn’t worried and scared, you wouldn’t be here trying to act like you know something. After Sept.10th, I hope you all can come here and be fan enough or man enough to take your piece of humble pie.

The lines on both sides of the ball are too small, and we will get pushed around yet again……look at the past Super Bowl winners…….see the bulk they have on the line, and the speed that takes care of the big hits, after the line clogs the holes…….John Abrahams made us lighter on ther D line, and the result is we will give up more rushing yards this year….. Teams will not worry too much about passing against us, especially if they take the lead.

The Falcon’s D needs alot of improvement. With all of the Pro-Bowlers on that side of the ball, it has to be coaching. Get Buddy Ryan out of retierment. When the ball carrier runs thru the line he need to know that hes going to get TAGGGGED. Opponents dont know that.

The defense is still a mess. People were quick to criticize Greg Knapp and the offense, but I think it was Ed Donatell that needed (and still needs) the criticism.

Why is it that teams who have supposed subpar running games can run all over us? The middle of the defense was gashed again.

Why is it that there always seems to be a man open when the other team needs to convert a 3rd and long? The DBs play 10 yards off the WR inside the 10 yard line? What?! Are you kidding me?!

I saw these SAME defensive problems all last season and now here in the presason. The Falcons defense is crap right now.

Guys, Guys Mike Vick was perfect with the short period he played. This has nothing to do with Vick at all. We need to work on our defense more. Also in fairness to the falcons who played mostly 3rd string team with packers mostly 1st string team and Brett playing over half of the game. Dunn was not geared up, also Brooking was not geared up and Hall left the gamein the 1st quarter. This is not about the score but to really see who will make the 1st and 2nd string with the team. However the packers played the game for scores. Guys you watch the next game which is the last preseason game when i believe Mora will play his main team and see the difference. I believe the falcons will really do well this yr. So pls stop being a hater and be a true fan both in ups and downs of the team.

I’d rather we take our chances with teams trying to bounce things outside against us by stacking the middle with a 5th Dlineman rather than watching us get gashed up the gut every game. Letting teams run up the middle all day long is demoralizing. I don’t think most RBs can beat Abraham and DHall to the corner, so let’s stack the middle for a series or two.

Just remember that defenses take a while to gel. All these free agents may help you, but the effect, with this much turnover, is rarely instantaneous.

I’m a Dawg fan, and if Shockley didn’t do well, that’s on him. It’s preseason, don’t blame coaching, because nobody’s going to show their hand this early. But don’t place too much stock in all of this.

And why is it one political party brings its vitriol wherever it goes? Leave your nazi talk radio politics somewhere it’s appropriate.

I don’t know why you people can’t see the problem with Keith Brookings this guy isn’t a differance maker! Williams, Ike, and Beck are clearly better than this guy. Mora knows this team is in trouble. Hartwell , rod Coleman and the other tackle is the problem. the tackle are to small in the run defense. pass defense they will do a lot better. The scheme call for speed yes we need speed but we need size, power and some speed at defense tackle. The middle people are getting the hell block out of them. Our people need to be in there back field. This need to be a attack defense not a read defense. This does not look . good if you are going to fix it it is now!Our offense line is thin too .we look to be to soft, not to mean and nasty as a team and to small!

This is preseason, the outcome doesn’t matter. Vick looked very sharp on his first drive, threading the needle multiple times, which was very good. The offensive line, for a change, did a very nice job blocking for the most part, at least as long as the starters were in. Depth on the offensive line doesn’t look very promising, since the 2nd and 3rd team blockers seemed to whiff on their blocks a lot. Don’t go overboard praising or criticizing Randall or Shockley — chances are whichever one doesn’t make it is still gonna be on the practice squad, and neither one is gonna come close to a starting job any time soon anyway. Both are projects who will take a while. Linebackers seemed to do a good job swarming to the ball and for the most part made their tackles. Secondary was OK — without Hall it’s obviously not gonna be as good, but Jimmy Williams didn’t really impress me much other than one play he made while covering a tight end. The biggest problem I saw all game was, as usual, the lack of size on the defensive line. The stats might not show that our run defense was that bad, but that’s mostly because guys like Noah Herron were running the ball most of the game. Their mediocre O-line kept getting a pretty good push up the middle against our light defensive front. We have to be able to keep the other teams’ blockers off our linebackers in order to be an effective defense.

If this defense continues to look horrible…DONATELL MUST GO!! How can you add 2 probowlers to your defense and it STILL looks as bad as it did last year?? Mora if you want to continue to support DONATELL….YOU CAN “KICK ROCKS” TOO!!

JM says he needs more “depth” at wide receiver,d-line and safety.I don’t know about you but I did’t see quality STARTERS at wide receiver or the d-line Saturday.

JM is in trouble because he is stuck between a system he has implementd that is not working and his lack of experience as a head coach wnd knowing how to adjust.

Plus,Brookings is the Chipper Jones of the Falcons: best years are behind him, higher salary than value and his pass coverage skills are exploited by every d coordinator in the conference. And he is keeping a younger ,more talented guy off the field.

Anyone notice Vick’s cumulative stats from the first two games.

Rating 87.3

Att Comp Yds Comp % Yds/Att 11 8 85 72.7 7.7

TD TD% INT INT% Long 1 9.1 1 9.1 22

With the exception of the INT. That looks like improvement in the West Coast offense. Short passes completed at a high rate. It’s up to the receivers to create the RAC (run after the catch).

Just looking at the stats.
