Deion and D. Hall
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Deion Sanders attended the Falcons’ practice Sunday and worked with the defensive backs, especially cornerback DeAngelo Hall. Hall is already recognized as one of the NFL’s best and also is beginning to show some of the versatility that Sanders displayed by taking some snaps at wide receiver.
How close is Hall to reaching the level of his idol Sanders? Will teams ignore Hall’s side of the field like they did Sanders? Who would you rather have back there on defense, Sanders or Hall? And how do you feel about seeing Sanders wearing the Falcons logo again? What can he teach Hall and the other defensive backs?
Lastly, do you have fond memories of Deion? What are your best memories? The high-stepping into the end zone? How about his exciting punt returns? Do you agree his tackling skills leaved a little to be desired? How did you rate his dancing in the end zone? Do you miss his flair? Can Hall rise to that level as an entertainer too?

Well, it certainly can’t hurt I don’t believe. I have no problem with Sanders. He was the best at his position (except for tackling) and it is good to see him re-establish ties with the Falcons.
The main thing Hall needs to work on is his temperament when on the field. Sometimes he is a little too cocky and comes close to getting personal fouls that can really hurt.
Other than that, all upside.

NOW THAT DEION IS SAVED I AM A BIGGER FAN OF HIS. I THINK THAT IT IS GREAT THAT DEION CAME BACK. I REALLY ENJOYED HIM AS A PLAYER PERIOD, EVEN MORE WHEN HE WAS A FALCON. A PLAYER LIKE DEION GIVES A TEAM HOPE THAT THEY CAN WIN ANY GAME, HE WAS A GAME CHANGER, I HATE TO SAY THAT THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM, BUT THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER DB LIKE HIM ESPECIALLY WITH THE WAY THE RULES ARE CHANGING TO ALLOW FOR MORE OFFENSE. IT WOULD EVEN HAVE BEEN NICE IF HE COULD HAVE PLAYED FOR THE FALCONS THE WAY HE DID FOR THE RAVENS. GOD BLESS YOUR SPIRIT MAN DEION!!!!!!!!

Was a huge Sanders fan when he was at FL State, then with the Falcons. I had a highlight tape for a few years. it was amaizing. Coulda done without the prime time clothing line and music videos. If the Braves had of won that World Series in 92, Deion would have been MVP as his avg was over 450.

Oh I almost forgot, a group of other FL State ulums would sit out in Left Feild in 91 early in the season and belt our the Seminole fight chant and chop to Deion. One night the organ player jumped in. The rest is history, Deion fans started the Tomahawk Chop in 91. If I’d only thought of the foam tommahawk…

Deion left because the Falcons let him. This was when Taylor Smith thought he could be a GM. Legend has it Deion’s agent told Taylor “Hey, if you don’t put the franchise tag on Deion, we’ll let you match any offer.” Taylor’s response, “Gee, that sounds fair Mr.Sports Agent. I’m sure your a man of your word! Let’s shake on it.” Needless to say the next uni Deion wore was not in Atlanta. Who could blame him for wanting out? The Falcon’s organization had no direction at the time. Sure they had a wild card appearance during his career here but he had a chance to go play for the Niners dynasty and win some rings… I hated the Niners then and I truly believe football karma has touched them for all the Debartalo hi jinks in the 80s and 90s but it’s hard to blame the Neon One for wanting to leave an also ran to play for a dominant winner like he played for in college.

Come on. That “my house” comment was one of the slickest moves ever. I mean, talk about owning somebody. Damn. I can still remember it even today. He made the press reporters wait until he finished his 2 minute speech, only then were they allowed to ask him questions. Obviously, not happy that the Falcons let him go.

I will always remember the game when he had the flu was getting an IV during the game and the other team would still not throw to his side of the field. He was the all time best I ever saw at that position. I remember seeing him running with a wide reciever going full speed down the field and the pass was way over thrown and the reciever stopped—and at full speed Deion closed 12 yards in a instant for an INT. He had liquid speed. Always will be the best in my book.

If only the Smith family had of sold the team back in those days.Deion probably would’ve played his whole career for the Falcons.I’ve forgiven the “my house” comments. If you was in the same shoes, you would’ve eaten it up to stick it to a former employer that didn’t even offer to keep you. Call him flashy, arrogant, flamboyant, whatever. But he made the team alot better when he was on the field. If the Falcons had a real coaching staff back then and scrapped the run and shoot sooner…..the team would’ve had alot more success I believe. As soon as I saw Deion with the Falcon attire on in the pic,it took me back to some great memories. I hope he can help Hall and Williams and the rest of the guys as much as possible.I don’t think he’ll be teaching them any tackling drills, but Deion was too busy going the other way for 6 to have to worry about tackling someone or just keeping the other teams best WR out of the game. And being “hated on” is really a good thing. That means someone else don’t look forward to playing against you or they are jealous and wished they had you or your talent. And I too am all for bringing in the Hammer to show some folks at LB how it’s done to hurt someone else.If Tuggle had played on another team,he would’ve been inducted to the hall of fame already.

Both the best cover corner and kick returner in the history of the game. Most amazing thing I ever saw a pro athlete do was Deion on a nationally televised (of course) Thursday night NFL game. It was against the Rams where he came over to the Dome from the Braves on an off night, had no practice with the Falcons at all, and simply shut down an All-pro receiver (Issac Bruce I think). As I recall, he didn’t even go into the defensive huddle - simply waited for the prey to come out and blanket him. Unbelievable and will never be repeated.

Ahhhh……the Dion memories. I was there the night back at old Fulton county stadium when Dion put the pads on for the first time against the Cincinnati Bengals. Anybody else remember? He took a punt and started to his left…saw traffic…turned and started running backwards then to the other side of the field….made a cut through a few blocks and then BAM….started high-stepping about the final 30-40 yards for a touchdown! The place went nuts.

D’Angelo did something in his first season that Deion never did in his career, which is force a fumble. Loved Deion’s coverage skills when he was here but never considered him a complete player because he was such a liability against the run. I certainly hope that coverage skills are all the staff will allow him to coach.

Love him or hate him, Deion was the best at his position. If you don’t believe it, just ask yourself, “Who are all the “Good” and “Great” corners in the league are compaired to”. Got your answer? Sanders
It definitely doesn’t hurt to have that type of knowledge and skill in your corner. This is like having Jerry Rice teach you how to run routes and Ali teaching you how to Jab. Good Idea!

Ironically, my favorite Highlight of Deion was not an interception or punt/kickoff return, but a tackle!! The Rams were in town, and they had a kickoff returner by the name of Ron Brown, who was only a year or so removed from winning a Gold Medal in the ‘88 Olympics. He was streaking down the sideline, closing in on the endzone, when out of nowhere Deion comes up from behind…not an angle, but behind him and makes the tackle. Brown leaped to his feet with such a look of astonishment as if to say, “Who in the hell caught me!!” A priceless memory….Good to have you back Prime…..

I wondered when he would finally come home. Although he left here in a way that angered many of us Falcon fans we knew why he left. He wanted to win. And that wouldn’t have happened for him as long as he stayed here. Taylor Smith should have never let him go for absolutely nothing. Deion is a Falcon. He’ll always be a Falcon. Folks can hang that Cowboy, 49er or any other team he played for on him but he knows where his home is and that’s where he got his reputation as “Prime Time”. I still remember that last game the Falcons played at the old Atlanta Stadium. The Seahawks came to town trying to knock the Falcons out of the playoffs. It was a chilly 10 degrees that December morning and that afternoon the Seahawks kept it close. That is until Deion took an inteception back for a score to put the game away. We went out in style that day with “Prime Time” doing the honors. Welcome home Deion.

Deion didn’t need to tackle, he could go up against a teams number 2 receiver, and shut that half of the field down! That frees up a safety and the other corner to double the opposing teams best receiver! Besides we had Jesse Tuggle! Now if only someone could teach Brooking to takle at the line of scrimmage as instead of 5 to 10 yards down the field!

Deion Sanders was simply the most eletrifying, respected, shut down CB to ever play the game! Period. Notice the haters out there do not have memories of a healthy Sanders being beat badly by someone. Yet there are comparatives to Sanders’ contemporaries, on talk radio, to Aneaus Williams and Rod Woodson….saying that Sanders’ could not tackle like them. But I submit to you that they could not shut down half the field like him. Instead of “primetime” he should have been nicknamed “Maytag Man” because quarterbacks rarely threw anything his way!!

anyone remember an early game in his career where a ballcarrier broke loose and was streaking down the middle of the field and the entire falcons defense was chasing him 10 yards back and couldn’t catch him, when from off the tv screen out of nowhere deion overtakes him and makes the tackle. thats my first prime time memory. there has never been anyone else in nfl history that was so dominating that a quarterback would not throw to that side of the field, even it was jerry rice or michael irvin. welcome coach sanders.

Remembering some of the plays made by Deion during his time as a Falcon makes me all giddy again. Some people hated Deion because of his flashiness, but he was bold because of his ability and always backed up his boasting. I am glad that the Falcons Management and coaches were receptive to inviting Deion back, and I am sure he can only help our DB’s to get better. Who can forget the excitement he gave Braves Fans also, constantly worrying opposing pitchers once he got on base. Prime Time you were the best.

Man when I saw that picture of Prime, a jolt of energy just ran through my body. Only a few can bring a level of confidence with there presence. (Jordan, Magic, Prime,) But TSpec was right on time with the KBrooking comment. He is a sure tackler but it just happens too deep in the defensive backfield. I hope he is able to MAKE PLAYS this year playing the Will instead of just making tackles.

I’d rather have Deangelo Hall than Deion. Hall can actually tackle somebody, which is one of the deficiencies the Falcons had last season, particularly against the run. Deion would make a play on the ball, but wanted no part of tackling if the guy caught the ball. I once saw Deion get ran over (like a opossum by a mack truck) by QB Dave Brown of the Giants. It wasn’t pretty. Plus he was prone to sit out because his toe hurt. Come on, that’s weak. At least it took a broken hip to sideline DHall. Neither one is lacking in confidence or vocal chords, but DHall has the edge in toughness.

Okay,
Hall has all the tools to be one of the greatest cornerbacks in NFL history. That said, Deon Sanders was probably THE greatest cornerback in NFL history. We are talking first ballot hall of fame material. Now as a person, I never cared for him. The way that he abandoned Atlanta and then taunted them from his perch with the Niners and Cowboys. I thought that was sad, but at the same time, due to inept ownership, those Falcon teams just weren’t going anywhere… Anyway, Hall has the gift and I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do, but Deon has already done it.

He wasn’t the best but he was damn good. Certainly he was the best the Falcons ever had. Yes, he could cover with the best but a complete Corner needs to excel in tackling on run plays as well. Too many times I’d see him leap onto a ball carriers back and be carried 5-10 yards. That’s what keeps him from being the best. As far as him teaching our young Corners? Excellent! Deion was awesome in mirroring Receivers and shutting them down and when the ball was in the air making sure he had just as much a chance of bringing it down as his opponant did. Listen well, young Hall and the rest of you Falcon DB’s. I think Hall has every bit the chance to eclipse Sanders feats. He just has to believe he can and go do it.

Prime time was the greatest cover corner in the History of the NFL. He could take away the option of passing to one of the opposing teams top receiver, and change games with his punt returns, and kickoff returns. He is clearly a first ballot Hall of Famer, and he could certainly pass on knowledge and technique to anyone working to be a cornerback. D-Hall is a marvelous player, but will not ever be allowed to be the same type of shutdown corner because of the league rules now. However, he is a complete corner because of his tackling and hitting. Rich Mckay was very wise to take him. We are blessed to have such a great player, and even more blessed that Prime Time would comeback to us and share knowledge. LONG LIVE PRIME TIME.

I was a fan of D. Sanders fan like most everyone else. He added excitement much like M. Vick does. But Dion did’t play the position like a typical CB. His primary focus was shutting down the receiver, not playing the position. That’s why he didn’t make many tackles at or near the line of scrimmage. Hall is a more complete CB than Dion was. And if he concentrated more on shutting down the receiver, than playing the position, he’d be as good as Dion was in that area.

Everybody was on there feet yelling. They punted the ball and he fumbled it! But there was a flag on the play so they had to punt again.Well he fumbled again but he picked up the ball with about 7 rams around him and high stepped went threw a seam in the middle hit the sideline and beep beep he was gone!!I have never seen no one run that fast!!!! Deion. He didn’t need to tackle. The other teams would not throw to “His” side of the field. The greatest receivers were shut down period. He would play off his receiver just enough to temp the quarter-back to throw his way, set the trap , take the ball and was gone. The first time Deion was at bat with the Braves the ump blew the first call at first, he was safe but called out .(tv replay ) The second time he was called safe but was out . Standing with a huge lead at first, the pitcher threw over to first about 8 times . Everybody was on their feet yelling “GO GO GO ” as our arms were thrusting forward with what then became the ” tomahawk chop”. When the pitcher finally threw to the plate Deion was gone on a hit and run and scored !! That was the beginning of the Braves great run !! Wow !!! He brought a new excitment to state of Georgia. Always a joke in the sports community, “Go Braves !!! and take the Falcons with you”. ” I Left two tickets on my windshield , when I came back , there was four “. Thanks to you Deion and to the GM ‘s that saw the God given talent that you have and used to turn Atlanta into a respected winner. The #21 is Deions number. Where it with great pride .

I remember when Deion was playing for the Falcons and the Braves and he played in a football game that day and flew back to Atlanta to play in a world series game. Deion was HOT!!! I think he was batting over .400. If he played in that game he would have gone down in history as the only player to play in 2 game in the same day. For some reason Cox did not play Deion. I remember Cox needed a pinch hitter (remember Deion was batting >.400). I remember Cox looked down the bench, as if he did not see Deion (as to calling himself of teaching Deion for playing in the football game on the day of the baseball playoff) Cox looked over Deion… THE BRAVES LOST. Welcome Home, Deion!! I’ve always said Atlanta should have given you the key to the City maybe the State. You are the GREATEST.
