Where was the wood?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
So the Braves couldn’t hit a starting pitcher who triggered 19-1 shellacking in his last major league stint. They still had four innings against relievers, but could manage very little in a 3-2 loss Thursday as the Pirates salvaged a game in the series.
Adam LaRoche is sitting for a few games after getting injured Wednesday. But as has been the case all year, one or two injuries shouldn’t be enough for the bats to go silent. Yet at times that’s exactly what has happened.
The Braves move on to Cincinnati with a chance to make up some ground between themselves and the wild card-leading Reds. Would anything less than 2-out-of-3 put a serious dent in Atlanta’s post-season hopes? Or do you think there’s still time to make the N.L. playoffs?

This one hurt a little bit, Huddy didn’t really pitch that well, but we did hold the Pirates to 3 runs, which should have been enough. We had a couple of situations with runners on 2nd & 3rd, we needed to cash in on at least one of them, but hey we won the series and that is a start now lets go to Cincy we have to win another series, but a sweep would be great.

As has been said before, this Braves team is simply not very good and mgmnt should be positioning themselves for 2007. This team can look decent against the lower tier teams but shows its true colors when playing a contender. The Braves would be an embarrassment if they reached the postseason this year.

The Braves had already won the series, it was another in a series of hot games, and it was a day game after a night game so the offense just didn’t give its all. The ABs showed a lack of focus and there was no bearing down in the clutch. The team came out flat and stayed that way. Hopefully Bobby will be better able to motivate the team for this next series because there was none of it today.

I thought Huddy did just fine, at least his best performance in the past month. Unfortunately the bats didn’t come with him. Braves left too many on base. So it goes. Let’s get a good series at Cinci. Only five out of the WC race and lots of baseball left.

I don’t think the Braves are going to make the wild card. Their pitching and their hitting are both very inconsistent. I don’t see how a conditioned player can get hurt, like LaRoche, runing the bases. I don’t remember so many players getting hurt as there are today.

Let’s see, the Braves lost because it was hot, they came out ‘flat’ in a day game following a night game, they had already guaranteed themselves of “winning the series,” blah, blah, blah….
Weren’t the Pirates playing under the same conditions? Aren’t the Braves (not the Pirates) the team that keeps pretending that it is in the hunt for the wild card? If the Braves end up a game or so out of the playoffs at the end of the year, this is the sort of game they will regret losing.

We won two of three. I’ll take that through the end of the year. Losing to Chacon hurts, though.

David,
No kidding. Losing to Chacon is a bust after all the walks he posted today. Atlanta just couldn’t punch any of those across the plate.

Wild card, Schmild card. Unless they sweep Cincy, they’re done. Held to 1 run by a guy with an ERA of 7.00. This team is so inconsistent it’s maddening.

Question: Has Bobby ever talked to Francour about occassionally when facing a new pitcher it is smart to take a few pitches??????????

This is the kind of asleep at the wheel performance we ve expected. Our supposed ace goes six innings and gives up three, we need more from him. Why is Frenchy allowed to make the same mistakes over and over again, he saw five pitches today in four at bats, three pop ups, two foul and a grounder, come on is this kid really this stupid, and this is the future why does he refuse to learn from mistakes. Why does the Tbs team keep defending him, I agree with sports Illustrated if he hits 30 and 100 it will be the worst season ever with those numbers

Tim Hudson, for whatever reason, is a five inning pitcher. He has a frail build, and he lacks stamina especially in hot weather during day games. Bobby Cox should have pulled him after five innings today in this heat.
Still Hudson’s contract is a bad contract, and for now, he is untradeable. Another one of JS’s mistakes.

why we lost, two words, jeff francoeur. thats was the worst hitting performace in history. 4 AB’s and he sees a total of 5 pitches and swings at them all. are you kidding me!!!!!!! cox should tell francoeur that he cant swing until he gets a strike in every AB for a week or he will bench him. he needs to learn how to take a pitch somehow.

Seriously someone on the braves team should sit down and talk with Jeff Francour about swining on the first pitch. Every time he swings at the first pitch he swings and misses. I mean come on, he can’t expect to hit a homerun every at bat. His stupidity pisses me off. If he can’t learn to take some pitches, we are in for more misarable seasons in the future. Come on and learn from ur mistakes.

Chipper is laughing all the way to the bank with his salary. Its time for some new young blood in Atlanta we need to remove the Jones boys from the lineup. We need a team that shows heart, Hudson is way overrated. Its time for Cox to hit the road as well, so we have a chance to win a World Series. If the World Series was a 162 games series we might be able to win a couple, but Cox is a micro manager who can’t manage with his righty/lefty stuff in a short game series.

Yes, Hudson pitched well, but we don’t pay, expect, or need him to pitch well. We need him to pitch great. We need him to go out there when we have a chance for a sweep and bear down. Not choke like he’s done consistently and give up 2 runs in the first and hand the lead right back.
I don’t know what’s wrong with him. But he’s turned out to be one of the worst busts ever. Hell, we probably couldn’t trade him.
Tim. FIGURE IT OUT. GET YOUR HEAD IN GEAR.

Andruw Jones was on waivers? I can tell you why. The Braves know they will never be able to afford him, especially with Scott Boras as his agent, who never lets his clients sign before testing the free agent waters. Look for him to be traded. As much as Jones says he wants to stay, like Sheffield, & Glavine among many others, he’ll follow the big bucks to New York.
