Post-game forum: Bullpen bliss
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Braves beat the Pirates 3-2 Wednesday night and once again their new relievers, Danys Baez and Bob Wickman, looked sharp. How does it feel to finally have a setup man and closer you trust? Is there time to salvage a playoff spot?
Starter Horacio Ramirez also pitched well.
But first baseman Adam LaRoche left the game with a hamstring injury. LaRoche homered twice in Atlanta’s 4-2 victory over the Pirates on Tuesday and has nine homers in 17 games since the All-Star break. How much would it hurt to have him out of the lineup?
What are your thoughts on the game?

It’s great we have a good solid set up man and closer. But I hope it’s no too late.

One has to wonder what our record would be if we had had Baez and Wickman all year. They show confidence when they walk out to the mound and that has to affect both the braves players and thwe opponents.

I think the bullpin helps a lot. It actually helps the starters out. Now when they pitch, they don’t have to worry about the late innings. They don’t have to pitch too long just to keep from having the bullpin come out. The last time Hudson pitched well, he tried to pitch through the ninth inning, but had to come out(then sosa blew a 7-2 lead). Ever since then he hasn’t pitch that well.
I just hope LaRoche isn’t out too long. He has been red hot since the allstar break.

As poorly as the Braves have played ALL as a whole to this point in the year, things really could be worse. As the game stands now, LA will beat the Reds and the Braves will be back within 4.5 games of the wildcard. The trades J.S. made this past week, at first glance, look to be greats moves to sure up three of our worse spots on the team (1. closer 2. setup 3. leadoff). I will admit that the sample size here, to date, is very small, but things just “feel” better. As Brad pointed out, confidence is a large part of performance and adding positively contributing pieces to the proverbial puzzle has to have a trickle down effect. My question is this….if Aybar continues to do well in the number whole, what happens when Chipper returns? If I were a betting man, my money would be on Giles back at leadoff and aybar ridin’ the pine. Agree/Disagree?

My only words of caution here is that the opposition is the Pirates…and a thrown together version of the Pirates at that given the deadline roster overhaul.
Having said that, I think it’s telling that I am so confident about our 8th and 9th inning pitching that I let TiVo switch over to the Pro Poker Tour at 9 PM rather than watch the rest. I certainly wouldn’t have done that three weeks ago.

With regards to the numbers crunch when Chipper returns, I view that as a pleasant problem.

can ya stop with the questions : Is there time to salvage a playoff spot? again with the ups and downs of this team ….i think it would be a tremendous misfortune if laroche is out for any extended period, hes getting very steady at the plate and fielding, braves need him in the lineup

David, I agree you can’t get too excited about the Pirates. However, the pen did an excellent job against the Mets as well. This pen has been greatly improved by Reitsma getting hurt, Sosa being traded (stupid Cardinals), and Baez and Wickman being acquired. If Baez does a good job the rest of the season, he should definitley be given a contract in the offseason.

i would hope to see aybar at 2B, batting leadoff… the guy looks like his glove would work somewhere besides at 3rd. Adding someone with a reliever was essential to any trade for betemit just for the occasion that 3rd, ss or 2B needed to be played on any given night. I think that is one of the biggest reasons that the trade with the Padres never happened. J.S. probably couldn’t coax the Dads out of a quality utility guy to pair up with linebrink….oh, and reds lose…4.5 back now.

Todd, thats unfair. Wickman nor Baez were available two months ago. Neither one of them were available in the offseason either. Wickman chose the Indians over the Braves for the same amount of money and the D-Rays demanded a king’s ransom for Baez.

Listen, Bobby told the Super GM of the Braves during spring training that this club had no bullpen. They knew it then and did nothing about it except give the Rietsma the ball. These latest two moves are affective, but should have been done in March. Of course there were vacations to Hawaii to take and books to sign.

Great blogs. Well said. Wish we could have had them all year but didn’t and still in the race despite that. A lot of our questions will be answered in Cincy this weekend. Not saying it had to be the same cast of characters we now have.Todd Jones was available, but the Braves weren’t willing to go an extra year on his deal.Look,we knew last year that Reitsma wasn’t the answer. He had one good month the entire season(July).Surely, people smarter than me in the Braves organization had to realize this too.Schuerholz has been has been getting by with bailing wire and duct tape the past few years, and now he has egg on his face.He could have done anything rather than the status quo.The Braves had two glaring needs going into the season:a lead-off hitter and a reasonably reliable closer, and Schuerholz didn’t address either. The man has done a good job the last 15 years, but he really dropped the ball last off-season.

4-8 million, give or take, was supposedly saved in preseason for payroll flexibility to make moves mid-season such as these. This flexibility makes sense, when you don’t have a glaring need and unsure what you will need later… But, We had a glaring need and apparently everyone knew this.
Not paying enough for a bullpen during the preseason, in order to have the flexibility to fix it later. Why could we have not offered Wickman more $’s or someone like him? TB wanting a king’s ransom for Baez makes no sense to me either. If your a GM of TB,Pitt,KC,etc., are you that unwiling to trade because you want to keep your relief pitchers?
I like JS, but one thing is for sure, he’s one of the best at spin, and making it appear that everyone else is insane.
By Robert(Justice Is The Best)
August 2, 2006 11:12 PM | Link to this
Well, the guys just weren’t available to acquire. Payroll constraints kept the team from competing in the free agent market. Billy Wagner and Todd Jones both publicly said they wanted to be Braves. However, the Mets and Tigers respectively offered deals the Braves simply could not compete with. Not making excuses but that was not JS’ fault. Since pitching is such a premium teams want the farm to give it up or any player of consequence. The Braves wanted Fuentes but the Rockies wanted McCann or Salty.
By Todd A
August 2, 2006 11:29 PM | Link to this
If Wickman and Baez walk,we’re probably going to end up trading a guy like Salty this off-season for a closer or late inning guy anyway.Truth is,Schuerholz had gotten complacement. We won the division last year with a bunch of rookies. The year before,we won with smoke and mirrors. That team had no business in the playoffs.JS had gotten to the point that he felt it didn’t matter who he signed,Cox would make it work over 162 games, and the Braves would still prevail in their division. The Mets have made a habit of collapsing. Why should this year be any different?Except this time, the Mets loaded up with the right blend of quality free agents and farm hands to overtake them.JS can make any excuse about payroll he wants. He didn’t have a sense of urgency, and he wasn’t concerned about the Mets.

This weekend series with the Reds could turn out to be crucial. Though the Braves admittedly have a bunch of teams to climb over, a sweep of the Reds could put them within a game or two of the WC. Admittedly, hey’ll have a lot of company, but they’ll be close. Even 2 out of 3 makes it very interesting. We’ll have Smoltz on Sunday, but having to go with Schiell on Sat is a shame.

The Reds are starting Kyle Lohse on Saturday, he was 2-4 with a 8.92 ERA with Minn. prior to coming to the Reds. Also the Reds defence has really not done well lately, 5 unearned runs Monday night as a example. I hope we have decent starting pitching to allow us to get to the new bullpen, what a change of pace. I’m afraid it’s too late. Let’s get back to .500, then I may get a little excited. LaRoche being out may hurt, but then Thorman could man up and show what he is made of and it may not hurt as bad. All of you Marcus bashers, watch what he does now since he’s moved back to the 2 hole. That bunt was a thing of beauty, and in the postgame interview he said it was his idea. That’s Marcus. Does what he needs to do to help win the game. He plays with the intensity of a Tasmanian Devil, and there are not many second basemen in the league that are as good or better than him defensively. He WANTS to be a Brave.
It sure is nice to see relievers come in and throw strikes, keep the ball down and keep it out of the middle of the plate. I hope their confidence and ability to do the things I mentioned will rub off on the younger guys. Especially the part about throwing strikes. McBride would be an excellent reliever if he would just do that, but right now he has more BBs than Ks. It doesn’t matter that this is the Pirates. EVERYBODY, both good and bad teams, has rocked the bullpen this year. That is until Baez and Wickman came along.

We are only 4.5 games out of the wildcard race right now, with the bulk of the next month’s schedule against the Cubs, Nationals, and Pirates. If we can win the series against the Reds this weekend we are in great shape to make a run at the wildcard. As for the bullpen, it is great to see the stability there. Wickman and Baez have solidified the end of the rotation, but we shouldn’t overlook the job Tyler Yates has done before they got here to help calm the ‘pen a little in July. ERA of under 1.00 and opponents batting around .130 off him…good stuff for a guy flying under the radar.

August continues to look good. The Braves need to continue the rise from the ashes of late august and the utter disappointment against the Mets last weekend. I think that it lit a fire under the Braves. From the end of that series to the end of the season it wouldn’t surprise me if the Braves have the best record in baseball over that span. Lets go Braves… yeah it’s the Pirates, but we have a 2-0 august so far and have gained a game on the Mets and 2 on the WC.

I believe this team could be preparing to go on a huge run. I said last night and I will say it again. This starting rotation, in part, has been struggling because they feel they have throw a perfect game every time they go out because if they don’t the bullpen will blow the game. Now, these guys know they can pitch 6 or 7 strong innings, leave the game, and watch the bullpen hold it down. Last night Yates did give up an inherited run but he kept his composure got out of the inning without any further damage and gave the team a chance to win. We all know that a month age the pen would have blown up the Braves would have wound up being down 5-2 or 6-2. I’m still leary of Baez however, I just realized that if he could close games for Tampa Bay with Pinella glaring out of the dugout ready to explode at any second, then he can pitch in pressure situations for the Braves and Bobby Cox. He struggled in L.A. but that could have had more to do with Grady Little than anything. Little isn’t the best manager. (Pedro in game 7 of the 2003 ALCS) That one still stings.

Wait a minute. Did none of you notice that the bullpen actually DID blow another save last night? If Jason Bay doesn’t drop Aybar’s flyball in the 8th, this could have been just another bullpen loss. Baez and Wickman have looked nice so far, but let’s not get carried away. The rest of the pen is still blowing em every chance they get.
By Robert(Justice Is The Best)

Reality check, that is simply not true. As bad as this past weekend was with the Mets, the one good thing was how well the bullpen pitched. In every game they came in and held the Mets at bay. The fact is Yates did give up the run last night but Horacio should have never started that inning to get them in the trouble in the first place. Horacio was obviously done in the sixth inning. Look at the numbers and watch the performances. Except for an instance here and there Paronto, Ray, and Yates have all been terrific.

reality check:
Even the best of them make mistakes, and I think Bobby made one leaving HoRam in there as long as he did. He was obviously tired, and he probably shouldn’t have started the 7th inning. Certainly, once he gave up the singe, it was time to go get him.
Tyler Yates gave up a single. That’s it. He then did a great job to get out of a bases loaded jam, and keep it tied. The bullpen still did an excellent job.
By KC
August 3, 2006 08:24 AM | Link to this
technically it is a blown save, but I can guarantee you that no one in the Braves clubhouse views it that way.
The bullpen went 2-1/3 innings allowing only one single (that was also the only baserunner the bullpen allowed). Let us also remember how tight this game was and how there was no drama in the 8th or 9th innings. It’s a beautiful thing.

If you look at the Wild Card standings, there are 8 teams ahead of Atlanta, BUT…
If we’re planning on winning more games than we lose the rest of the way (and of course we’ll have to), the loss column is the only thing that really matters in the standings right now.
There are actually 5 team (not 8) ahead of them in the loss column (and 2 others tied).
3 of the 5 teams ahead of us are only one game ahead of us in the loss column.
Only 2 teams are more than 1 game ahead of us in the loss column: The D-backs and the Reds. Both are 4 games up on us.
We’re still right there folks. We are very much within striking distance. The other teams in race are convincingly mediocre. All we have to do is play good baseball. Tim Hudson, are you reading this?

Robert (JITB) - Good point on Baez. If you can even partially succeed in Tampa Bay, think of what you can do elsewhere. The major leagues are dotted with guys that got really screwed up by the Rays organization who recovered in a better organization. The Braves John Burkett comes to mind. But Baez succeeded despite the Rays - but then you have to remember he was with Cleveland before coming to baseball hell down here in Tampa Bay.

Joe, I agree. Selig’s a weasel. He doesn’t deal with the tough issues. When he comes under fire as he did after that all-star game that ended in a tie… he does whatever’s necessary to take the heat off. Even if that means having a WS decided by a $#%^$# all-star game.
He refuses to consider striking, or even putting an asterisk next to records that players cheated to achieve (Barry Bonds, McGuire, Sosa).
The single-season home run record is still 61 by Roger Maris. And I don’t care whether Barry Bonds hits 766 or not, Hank Aaron will still be the all-time HR king.
How and the hell can baseball ban Pete Rose, a guy who didn’t’ cheat, and allow Barry Bonds to continue his illegal march toward the most sacred record in all of baseball.
Selig did one good thing… interleague play. That’s it. Apart from that, he’s hurting the game.
The only thing killing baseball more than Bud Selig is the players union.

It would be such a confidence boost if Huddy could pitch a good game today and we could get a win. Tough matchup on Friday, Harang is pitching vs James in a HR hitters park. I think the feeling on LaRoche right now is that he will probably sit out today (available for pinch-hitting duty), and will be in the lineup tomorrow night.
It would be terrific to see Huddy have a great outing. One of those might be all it takes to get him going.
I’m a little worried about the Red’s series in that we have C.James (who’s had problems with the longball, and will be pitching in a band box this weekend), and Jason Shiell, who doesn’t seem to belong at the major league level at all.
The good news is that we have Smoltzy going on Sunday, so if we can find a way to split the first two games, we can take this series.

Horacio Ramirez has been stellar in 9 of his last 12 stars dating back to May when he came off the DL.
Granted, the 3 bad outings were very bad… but a guy that shuts down the other team 3 out of 4 times, is valuable to any team.
He needs to be more consistent, but I would still argue that he’s done a good job.

Well after the season is shot, JS backs off his bullpen pitchers are a dime a dozen. It would be nice to have a left fielder. The other two outfielders are flailers. It is nice that the stupidiy of batting Giles in leadoff has stopped momentarily. Of course, he’ll be right back there when CJ returns. The Braves are actually a sad team.
All this wild card talk is hilarious. The Braves have the 3rd worst record in the NL. They are not going to climb past 9 teams. Is there no end to spin?

So, it’s the 6th inning and Hudson’s pitching again. What might happen? Oh, a single, a walk, another single to score a run, runners on first and second, nobody out…. HAS ANYONE REALIZED THAT HUDSON CAN’T MAKE IT THROUGH THE SIXTH? Not sure what you do about it on a global level, but when you see Hudson’s getting in trouble (again) in the sixth (again) and you finally have a bullpen that can bail him out, why not use it?

It’s too little too late but at least it’s a change for the better. Go Braves. Maybe we can get the wild card and who knows what can happen if the Braves get hot. With everybody healthy we can still win it all.
Love the Braves since 1966, I am a Loyal Fan. GO BRAVES.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly Supergrass….Jeff F today, 0-4 with 5 pitches thrown to him…not in one at bat, but all day. Jeesh, take a pitch Jeff, who knows, you might get a good count….then get the fastball you are always swinging at!

Downer… Huddy threw well today but forgot to bring his offence. Can’t knock him for this one. Braves left too many on base. Go get Cinci this weekend.

Baez & Wickman will look good in Met uniforms next year.
I understand Schuerholz has been offered 12 cases of Sam Adams by the RedSox for Hudson. I see Huddies ERA dipped to a svelte 5.22 after that stellar performance (all of 6 innings)against the hapless Pirates.
Betemit is tearing it up for the Dodgers.
Keep those brilliant moves coming, Schuerholz. Your making Steve Phillips look smart !
