Is 13 unlucky for Atlanta?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Sporting News has ranked Atlanta No. 13 on its list of best American sports cities. Thirteenth out of 99, and Athens is No. 62.
How do you rate Atlanta as a sports city? And what do you think makes a good one? Is it just how its teams perform, or does it include the atmosphere at games, the frenzy of the fans, and how much sports is the topic of conversation around town?

What a joke, Miami number 2. That city doesn’t support anything. The Hurricanes rarely sell out their games, the upper deck at the Orange Bowl always seems to be empty. They are going to lose their baseball team soon, the heat fans are mostly bandwagon

I’m shocked ATL is even that high! But I am sure it has more to do with UGA alums supporting the Dawgs than it has to do with ATL residents supporting the home professional teams. You could walk around naked in Philips arena and nobody would notice at a Hawks game. And don’t get me started about attendance at Braves playoff games.

L.J.- I agree with you about everything you said but the Braves playoff games is something you should look at closer. Yes, we haven’t sold them out but if you look in the recent past most of the playoff games we have are on like a Tuesday at 2pm. Who in Atlanta can go to a playoff game at 2pm in the middle of the week. I know I can’t. I am at work like most other Atlantans/transplants. Teams that tend to sell out their playoff games are placed on prime time and fans can make it out to the ballpark. I just think that if the Braves had a playoff schedule for say a night game the outcome would be different. My .02 cents

I’m fine with where they are and it could’ve been a little higher if the pro teams could’ve performed better. But if there was a ‘common sense’ ratio factored into the ticket buying process, Atlanta would be number one with a bullet. When the only playoff game to be played in Philips Arena so far is from the Arena league, well, who can blame the fans for having the common sense not to spend hard-earned $$$ on a bad product? For example, who in their right minds would support a lousy product like the Hawks, who haven’t sniffed the playoffs since the Clinton Administration or drafted an All-Star player in over two decades? The Falcons, for all of their success since Blank has been in charge, has yet to post consecutive winning seasons and the 2-6 finish in 2005 surely didn’t help things. As for the Braves, the division titles are great but last I checked, they don’t hang those type of banners up in Yankee Stadium where expectations are much higher than they are here. If Grady Little and Buck Showalter got run for playoff losses in Boston and NY, what do think they would’ve done to Bobby Cox by now? It seems like the bar was raised everywhere else in town except in the ivory towers. That’s why you don’t see sellout crowds for playoff games anymore; why see the movie again when you already know the ending?

I agree with several others, I am shocked Atlanta was rated that high….Braves games seem to have approx 50% of those in attendance rooting FOR the visitors…The Falcons are destined for average status until they obtain a real PRO QB and quit drafting all of these primma donna VT attendees ( notice I did not say graduates !)…and well The Hawks are awful…which leaves the Trashers as the only steady drawing card…go figure

“Looserville” at 13th? I think that’s huge for a town full of losing franchises, the Brave’s 14 year streak notwithstanding. When you combine 3 1/2 losing franchises with a city that is 75% transplants, 13th is pretty good.

New York should be Number 1.
As for Atlanta, it’s just not a sports town unless you’re talking College Football. Until Michael Vick, the visiting fans would outnumber the Falcon fans. The Braves are having possibly the best run of any baseball team in history and don’t really get a lot of support. Hawks are so terrible it’s tough to spend money on them. Thrashers are entertaining, but Atlanta is not a hockey town.
Problem is most people who live in Alanta are from Chicago, New York, LA, Texas and just about everywhere else in the US. I don’t find all that many born and raised Atlantans in my everyday travels. So I just don’t see the die-hard, root for my team no matter how they are in Atlanta like I see in New York or Boston for example.

Comments like the Falcons should draft a better qb is one reason why im shocked ATL is that high myself. People like Mark are a part of the main problem in Atlanta. They just bash players for no reason although that qb from vtech is one of the major reasons people even talk about the Falcons. Previous years the only reason people talked about that team was because of Deion and that lone SuperBowl berth. I think the Hawks are improving and if they get something decent in return in the Al trade then they should at least compete for a playoff spot, at least i hope. Im a true fan so i support all the teams no matter if they struggle.

I can see why we are #13. We have had poor leadership from the people who own and run and coach our teams . Braves have been good in the 90’S .The Falcon new owner is the best this team has had. The poor hawks clueless. Very poor top to bottom. Espn hates the falcons. Sport writer hate Atlanta and our Fans clueless, hater, classless. This why we are 13#

Brian,
I see where you’re coming from about the Braves, but the time of the game is no excuse. I remember going to a playoff game vs. the Mets several years ago. Some NY fans were sitting by me and they were berating ATL for all the empty seats. I even used your excuse and they thought it was ridiculous (so did I, but I’m gonna stick up for my team). If a major sports team in your city is playing a post-season contest, the game should be sold-out even if the game starts a 4am. No excuses.

I don’t really see how being ranked #13 out of 99 is a diss. The way the media loves to hate on Atlanta, I’m actually shocked we’re that high. I agree with Rubin though, Miami #2? Give me a break, those Marlin fans just a couple of years ago when they won it all, NEVER showed up at games (I remember from watching Braves games playing them there), but when they get to the World Series and boom!- it’s packed and I have to listen to some knucklehead announcer talk about how great they are. Yeah right, they almost lost that team due to poor attendance and they call him great? Let Atlanta do that (or anything for that matter) and the ATL hate-fest kicks into high gear. We boo one of our own and we get ripped. No mention about how Yankee fans boo A-Rod on a regular. We’re the only ones. Let me finish with this- THE WHOLE WORLD is fair-weather, we’re the only ones who get called out on it. Ever hear the term, “Everyone loves a winner and hates a loser!” Well, they weren’t just reffering to Atlanta when they said that. If you ask me, St. Louis has the best fans anywhere, the way they love those Cardinals. That alone puts them at #1 to me.

What’s the big deal ATL? Having lived there, no one there supports anyone but the Braves. It’s one of the most fickle towns in the country - very bandwagonish. If a team like the Hawks/Falcons are winning, all of a sudden everyone is doing the dirty bird…if they start losing, seats are empty. I personally think the ranking is high for you guys. Atlanta is a transplant town with no real following.

Atlanta as number 13 isn’t unlucky, it just means we have a lot of work to do. I would rate it kind of the same way. How the team performs is a big part of fan base but not the only part. The NY Mets can be in last place and still fill the stadium. The atmosphere has to be better too. Promote the young kids to want to be part of the game.
Atlanta has a few problems unique to other cities. First, we have so many transplants that put their previous cities first will always create a low opinion of Atlanta sports teams. Next, in other cities, the sports figures are active in the community, meeting fans, being known as people rather than just “athletes on t.v.” Other cities (I am from New York) promote their players so the fans grow with them as their career grows. Atlanta needs to bring sports to the level of the “average” person and not just something that only the rich and upper middle class can enjoy.

Yeah, I think the writer went way overboard with the “disses Atlanta” part. #13 is a fair rating for Atlanta, if not generous. The local fan bashing is a little overboard on here too though w/ most of Atlanta’s teams having losing traditions. The only team that doesn’t, the Braves, is about the most underachieving postseason franchise of all time in any sport. You can’t blame fans for growing weary of the letdowns, and then some finally giving up on a bad year.

Instead of sitting in a stadium watching others exercise, many of us Atlantans are often out training for the Peachtree Road Race, the world’s largest 10K. That’s a sports town!
As a native Atlantan, I can remember when there were no professional sports teams here (at age 9, I attended the Atlanta Braves 1st game; the Braves lost and we had a great time anyway). Longtime loyalties here are to college teams. It will require another generation for the pro teams here to build the kind of deep loyalty which exists in other cities. That’s OK

That’s high for Atlanta.
Only good years for attendance at Braves games were from 1991 to 1994. Falcons only had two good years of attendance after Blank bought them. Hawks non-existent. Thrashers, decent for a town that went through the Flames and Knights.
This leaves us with UGA then GT a distant second.

I must say that I am shocked but I will take it. After reading some of these post ATL will never make the top 5 because of so much negativity. Yes the Hawks games are empty, and yes the Braves attendance during the playoffs is low and yes the Thrashers have there up and down season and yes the Falcons may have it’s issues with winning back to back season. Name another city that has 4 Pro Teams and 2 Major college teams in the same city or area. If there is 1 or 2 cities, how many support there teams more than we do…
My message to MARK, if your not supporting the city sports stop talking bad about it. The Thrashers aren’t as good as you think they are…

I get sick and tired of hearing how bad of a sports town Atlanta is. First off every city has fair-weather fans- even the Holy city( New York) Remember the series between the yanks and braves in new york a few months ago- the day game barely had any fans to begin with and with the momentum shifting to the braves the almighty yank fans started leaving. And i have no clue where the person got his facts from about the falcons not selling out games, i attended many games in the year vick was out and the attendance was still at capacity. One reason for New York and Chicago are regaurded for having avid baseball fans is because they dont have a UGA football team that takes up all the conversation when it comes to sports. So lay off the bashing of Atlanta fans.

Whoever came up with this list must have never been at an Atlanta sporting event. The Atlanta fans would not even rank ahead of my son’s baseball league fans. The Atlanta fans are as fare-weather as they come and most do not have a clue about the sports that they are watching. The Atlanta fans rank at #13 only if the scale is 1 to 10. Right you are, Darrin. The entire world is fairweather where folks come out from the woodworks when they’re winning and run for cover when things head south. There isn’t a city in America with multiple pro teams (sorry but one-sport towns like Salt Lake, Green Bay, Portland, and Sacramento doesn’t count) where there hasn’t been instances of this. No, NOT ONE. Yet and still, Atlanta gets knocked up side the head for having the audacity to spend their $$$ based upon the team’s performance on the field or court. What we’re supposed to do, spend our cash, boo when they get blown out while the owners sit in their luxury suites laughing their way to the bank like Tribune does with the Cubs every year? If the Hawks had even a decent product the last five years instead of being the punchline to every NBA joke, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. If the Braves had won another World Series or two instead of being labeled the Buffalo Bills of baseball, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. If the Falcons could have consecutive winning seasons (and despite this, they haven’t had an unsold ticket since Blank took over) and stay consistent for a change instead of having us longtime residents waiting for the bottom to fall off (which to this point always does), again, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Make the product on the field or court better and the fans will be there. Match or exceed the customers’ expectations and they will come back with more customers. That’s not just an Atlanta thing; that’s an AMERICAN THING.
GAME, SET, MATCH.

To Rubin, How can you say anything bad about Miami when the state of Georgia just had their first Hall of Fame inductee, Dominique Wilkins? That’s awful. Not even Herschel Walker is in the Hall of Fame. Matter of fact the Marlins have more championships than the Braves over the last 15 years. What’s up with that! So before you say anything bad about Miami look in the mirror homeboy, I don’t see any rings on the fingers of Falcons, Bulldogs, Yellowjackets, Thrashers & so….

From 1991 to 2005, the Braves were in the postseason every year. During that run, they played exactly 111 postseason games. Turner Field holds 49, 831 fans. Now, I don’t know exactly how many of those 111 games were played at home, but let’s guess it was half. That’s 55.5 games, times 49, 831 tickets. That’s 2, 765, 620 postseason tickets that were available. How many major league cities realistically would have sold that many postseason tickets? New York and Chicago, certainly. Who else? Give Atlanta fans some credit. We’ve all been to a Braves playoff game or three (I’ve been to my share). The playoffs - so what? We’ve all been there, done that. We want another World Series. See, when you only get to the playoffs once in a blue moon (Mets, Cubs, Reds, Cards, Dodgers, etc., etc.) it’s a big deal. It’s not a big deal here. We’re used to success.

The quality of fans is inversely related to the weather.
The nicer the weather, the lousier and more indifferent the fans are. That’s why Boston, Chicago, NYC, are high on the list, and LA, San Francisco, Oakland, San Diego, Atlanta have such lousy fans.
Atlanta has too many transients to be that high. When your population supports so many different cities teams, the intensity to support one and be a great city just isn’t there. There are a ton of Red Sox fans when the Braves are in town, ton of Yankees fans, I saw a Thrashers game with more Toronto Maple Leafs fans than Thrashers fans. Huh?
But you know what Atlanta, I lived there for several years and you got enough going for you where you don’t need some arbitrary story about cities (whose real purpose is to just sell more magazines this month) to vouch for you being good fans of your team or a good city.

Forget Cities. The State of Florida has and always will be the best place for sports. Currently the NBA Champs and NCAA Men’s Basketball Champs are from there. FLorida has always been the top place for high school and college football. Even the Marlins won the World Series a few years ago. The state of Georgia isn’t much when it comes to sports.

If you take the time to look at the Sporting News criteria, the ranking makes sense. They put a premium on championships and playoff success…Atlanta’s record isn’t so great there.
Attendance is another biggie. Falcons have been seen in the upper 90 percentile since Vick arrived, but that’s amazingly still not in the top 10 of NFL teams. Braves are consistently in the teens in terms of overall attendance. Thrashers are in the lower third of the league, Hawks are near the bottom.
For a city with a small population near the arenas (and comparatively small to many of the other top cities), lack of long-term historical tradition, and a high number of transplants with other allegiances, 13 isn’t bad at all.
Jeff, Detroit’s in at #4, which should make you happy (don’t forget you have to account for the Lions).
And Martin, you might want to check your facts. The Mets haven’t filled Shea in the past six years. This year they’re averaging less than 75% full, and that’s by far the highest they’ve been lately (and they’ve been below the Braves percentage wise half of the time).

Got to agree with Noah about Florida. When the Braves are the biggest thing going, that tells you what type of sports town Atlanta is. The Hawks are horribl, Vick and the Falcons never live up to the hype, and the Braves choke every year(won’t have to worry about that this year). The Florida teams seem to have amazing success.

I realized the players and owners of all pro sports teams didn’t really care about the sucker fans, and I was paying for this. I think Atlanta actually has some of the best fans in the country, but u have to look at other reasons as to why Atlanta doesn’t support its teams or sellout Playoff games. First of all The Atlanta area is home to only 400,000 plus people. Now most cities that have 400k people don’t even have one sports franchise but Atlanta has 9th largest metro area in the country and is nearing 5 million people. Most of that 5mill commute to the city limits daily for work. When work is done we have to face some of the worst traffic in the world and when you get home the last thing anyone wants to do is get back in the car and drive back to the city. Atlanta believe it or not has one of the top TV markets for sports in the country so it’s not like we just tune our teams out and do other things. I think if Atlanta’s sports teams were located in the northern suburbs where more than half of that 5million plus live then we would get huge support from the Atlanta fans, just my opinion. Jerald

Atlanta should rank 99 out of 99. This city is absolutely the worst sports town. Braves are Kings of CHOKE, the Falcons have a college QB trying to be a NFL quarterback who is injury prone and the Hawks make the Clippers look like a dynasty. The city should be the city of losers with a fair weather fan base who most of the attendance at games are their to see the other team. I agree Chicago, Boston or San Francisco are far away better sports towns not even close.

I agree with the comment of driving back into the city, which is the worst traffic in the country. Plus every Braves, Hawks, Falcons and Thrashers game is on TV so why waste time sitting in traffic when you can sit and relax on the couch. Now i dont know about many other cities but i doubt they have the tv coverage like Atlanta teams. Plus football reigns king, along with the braves (on weekends) so most Atlantans save their energy for UGA season- and since when has 2 SEC titles in 3 years been decent- also please see the All- sports ranking where UGA is in the top 5

If traveling to a sports event in downtown Atlanta didn’t envolve a National Geographic survival immersion, attendence would skyrocket.

Atlanta should place in the Top 10 but congrats anyway. As a former Atlantan I was a little surprise that Miami was #2. Now I live in boring Charlotte and we got a 25th ranking. I saw that some college towns made the list but did not see Clemson in the top 100. Ever been to Death Valley in the fall…one of the best places to watch a college football game.

It must be 13th - your AJC doesn’t even report US Amateur golf qualifying results.
