Not too early to think fall hunting

Hunters get to scratch their itch for the upcoming season with the help of the Georgia Wildlife Federation, which has scheduled its popular Buckarama trade shows (Thursday-Sunday in Atlanta and Aug. 15-17 in Perry) in the next few weeks.

The Atlanta show begins at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Atlanta Expo Center on Jonesboro Road (take exit 55 off I-285).

The four-day show offers the latest in gear, advice from experts and a deer-mount competition that showcases some of the biggest bucks taken in Georgia and the Southeast.

“It’s the greatest show in this part of the country,” said show organizer Doug Rithmire. “If you want something about camping, hunting, fishing, it’s here this weekend.”

Admission this week is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors 65 and over and free to kids 12 and under. Show times: Today, 1-8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For information and a $1 off coupon go to gwf.org.

So, are you ready for the fall hunt?

Why is there never a show in south Georgia? Why are we expected to pay at least $100 in gas alone just to attend? There are many hunters and fishermen in south Georgia that are ignored. Example, look at any copy of GON you will notice 95% of the articles are Macon or above. As usual we will have to go to Jacksonville or Gainsville FLORIDA because our own state ignores us.

As hot as it is, the thought of fall takes on the pleasurable aura of a $%*ual fantasy.

Speaking of getting the itch, last deer season twice I saw the same huge buck, the largest one I’ve seen in 10 years at this spot. I know nobody else got him. I’ve told my brothers about THE deer but not WHERE. :) My son keeps asking me WHERE but he’s not getting it out of me either. What I DO know is come shootin’ time, I’m going to tell my son, “Now, if you head down that trail when you get to “X” spot, sit down at “Y” tree and wait. He’s coming. But you better get up REAL early.” I can’t wait. (To my brothers: No it’s not THAT spot. Ha ha ha.)
