Joakim Noah: Love him or hate him?

As HoopHead wondered whether the exploits of a flashy college athlete are fair game for discussion, it didn’t take much flying through cyberspace to find out the answer to the question:

Is it proper to ask whether you love or hate Florida’s Joakim Noah? Should he be subject to the treatment reserved for coaches and pro athletes?

The matter is already being bandied about. Plenty. Has been for some time. And the junior All-American for the defending national champions hasn’t shied away in what has been a somewhat controversial season.

As the Gators arrived in Atlanta today to continue their quest for a second title in a row, there’s plenty being written, talked and blogged about regarding Noah. His appearance. His playing style. His exuberance. His many, many words on many, many subjects. Mostly about basketball.

Love him or hate him is the topic these days. He says the personal swipes do get him down.

He’s been called quite a few off-color things.

He’s been compared to Christian Laettner.

He’s been PhotoShopped in imaginative and tasteless ways, this Geisha girl being a rather harmless exception.

Fans at UCLA, which lost to the Gators in last year’s championship game and meet Florida again on Saturday, are having their own kind of fun with Noah.

Do you think some of this goes over the top?

Then again, Noah does enjoy the spotlight, and insists he and the Gators feed off the “hate” they receive.

After Florida won the SEC Tournament, Noah launched into a dance copied all over YouTube land. He insists it was all in good fun.

His own YouTube, in which he pumped up his “Gator Boys,” got to right to the point: “Love us or hate us we’ll give you 150 percent.”

What do you think of Noah and what he brings to the game? Is it proper for grown adults to heap scorn and abuse on a 22-year-old college athlete who says he means no harm?

Solid player. Who could have went pro last year, but decided to stay to help the team, and he is catching a lot of flack for that. Great player with a huge heart. I like him and I am a Georgia fan.

Oh my goodness, do I dislike that Reptiles. I’ve picked them to win with my head not my heart and one of the reason’s I chose the Reptiles is Noah. What a breath of fresh air to college B-Ball. Leader of the team through example. Coach tells him what he wants and he does it. Beats his own chest and cheers(having fun with the whole thing). Not one penalty for taunting. Doesn’t worry about his stats, just win baby in the right way. I would love to have a player like that on my team. Felton wouldn’t,wait a minute, maybe he would and could someone ask Felton that question? Lot of old timers will complain and try to put him down. Notice other teams are smart enough not to because they know the giant is awake but there’s no need to make him mad. Wished he played for the Dawgs.

To me, it seems that he is a college kid enjoying a once in a lifetime expereince. He is a unselfish player, who plays within his team’s philosophy and does the little things that won’t show up on a stat sheet to win games. You hear so many people talk about playing for the love of the game and the great expereince that playing college will grant you, and when someone openly displays that type of emotion he becomes a “punk” or a “thug”. Now when he gets to the NBA, and starts negotiating his contract during a walk year and decides to test the free agency, all you’ll hear is how athletes should play for the “love of the game”. I think some of the criticism is a little over the top and if you really have that much of a problem with a amateur athlete, you really need to let it go.

How can you hate the guy? He could have been a top 5 pick last year, but he chose to return to college and compete for another championship. He is living a dream and is enjoying every minute of it. Quit trying to make a story out of nothing. The only people that would hate him are fans of the teams the Gators chewed up on their way to Atlanta. And this is coming from a Dawg fan living in Tallahassee.

I see an exuberant, articulate and talented college kid, enjoying the best time of his life. Is he supposed to be a card board figured, carbon copy cut-out, spouting the same adolescent clichés like most other college athletes? I certainly hope not!! I view the kid as a welcomed change from the norm. All he has to do is keep his head straight and the rest will take care of itself His talent AND personality has next-level MARKETING DREAM written all over it and I’d love to be his agent.

I totally disagree with anyone who believes Noah will be a great NBA player. Noah is and will always be a sensitive player who let’s his attitude dictate his play. He is Dennis Rodman without the consistency and the bad taste. More than that, he has become a national figure for doing nothing. The best talent on their team begins in the middle and ends at the guards. Too many times we get caught up with athletes with very little ability and vibrant personalities. I’m sick of seeing him get all the credit for The Lizards winning when he barely gets 10 points a game. Matter of fact, I’m sick of The Lizards anyway! Go ahead and worship him. More than likely he will be an Atlanta Hawk next year anyway!

From an NBA perspective he’s unbelievably overrated, because his offensive game sucks now and will be even worse in the NBA. Picking him top-5 in the draft would be foolish. But as a college player, he’s great, and deserves the credit he gets in being the emotional leader of that team.

And yeah, as a public figure, he’s as open to being criticized as any other public figure. There’s nothing wrong in him being subjected to the treatment that pros get.

Uhh, I think he was the MOP of the Final Four last year and dominated games, averaging something like five blocks a game during the tournament. I think he has done something.

He’s got handle, he’s 6’11”, still room to fill out, bangs pretty well even at 245…shot blocker’s timing, defends the post and even the perimeter, unselfish, 75% free throw shooter, more assists than turnovers, excellent post passer, runs the floor like a deer…exactly why is he going to flop as a pro? I think he’d fit well in a Western Conference/Phoenix kind of team.

He’s got a little jumper, doesn’t use it much. Donovan doesn’t want him to. He wants him to low post and draw fouls, which - if I remember the last two games correctly - he did so well that two opposing players fouled out and most of the rest were in trouble.

His father and grandfather were world-class athletes, his mother is a former Miss Sweden, and his father is presently a pop musician in Europe. I’m old enough to remember when Yannik Noah was beating white players, and dating white women. I think Joakim can take anything a bunch of US college students can throw at him.

As far as Noah goes, I hate the bast#rd. Yes, he’s talented, and he’s a very good player, but I’m sick and tired of the showboat sh&t. So you blocked a shot…whoopitty do. Get back on defense and shut the f$ck up. I guess I’m getting sick and tired of college hoops turning into the NBA Jr. Just play ball and shut the f&ck up. And another thing…quit pointing to Jesus after you’ve made a basket. For one, it’s insincere (but all the cool players do it), and secondly I would think Jesus couldn’t give a sh*t you’ve just scored 2 points.

Good grief folks. It’s just a college basketball game. Noah is enjoying his life. And people actually hate him because he doesn’t act the way they think he should. For all of the critics and fault finders, did you ever play college or pro basketball? Did you ever win a title? Did you ever make the newspaper and national tv? While you’re living your miserable pitiful life, Noah is doing something positive with his life.

Being a Gator fan myself, I enjoy Noah's love of life and his apparent enjoyment of this great collegiate experience, but at the same time can understand some people's content for his "showmanship". We went through sort of the same thing with Spurrier. Having said that, using the word "hate" should not be thrown around lightly in any forum concerning a college athelete who is just loving life, especially since the kid hasn't killed anyone, been caught using/selling drugs, or done anything illegal at all for that matter. Yeah, he gets a little carried away sometimes, but so what, he could do it in a bad way like "Pac-Man" Jones and be a regular visitor of the wrong side of the law. Folks should be happy that Noah does not embrace the "gangsta" mentality that so many young men his age have adopted these days. It's a breath of fresh air. Some people will use this as well as any other chance they can to just show their ugly side and say "he ain't @#$%", "he sucks", "I hate the bastard", when in reality; it ain't that serious. If you can't appreciate the good Noah brings to not just college basketball, but the joy in being alive period, I really do feel sorry for you. So Noah, KEEP DOING YOUR DANCE AND DAM THESE HATERS! Everytime something goes well in my life from now on, I will be doing that dance you performed after winning the SEC tourney for the rest of my life! Don't let them steal your joy kid and props to "jaythegolfer"- a class UGA fan. Even a rival fan can see and enjoy this guy's enthusiasm. Gotta love it.

Noah is a tremendous player! Why create controversy where it does not exist? Having said that, I am not a Florida fan, however, let’s give the Gators credit, they are the defending National Champions. Additionally, they are again in the final four and JK is one of the main reasons for the team success. The Hawks would be lucky to land him in the draft.

I absolutely LUV JOAH_NOAH! He makes the game so much fun. He’ll flip out when he reads my blog because UK FANS USUALLY GIVE HIM A FIT. I am actually a Georgia Dog and Florida fan. Joakim is so much fun to watch, and I adore the antics. I really think he’s a great sport—he takes a lot of crud from the crowd. But, he can really get the crowd on its feet. Also, he says what he thinks WITH AUTHORITY. But, he can also be tactful and polite. When Corey Brewer signed with Florida and I found out joakim was his roommate I thought, “OH NO”! But, he’s been a great roommate for Corey, and Joakim gives everyone on the team a lot of credit. I even have him a belated birthday card that I plan to send after the tournament. Since it will be postmarked from KY I’m sure security will read it first. IF, AND IT’S A REALLY BIG IF…BILLY DONOVAN SHOULD DECIDE TO COME TO KENTUCKY, THEN I SURE HOPES HE BRINGS JOAKIM WITH HIM AS A GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH. THAT’LL TEACH SOME OF THESE KENTUCKY FANS THAT GIVE NOAH SO MUCH GRIEF. GOD LUCK, JOAKIM, COREY, BIG AL, TAUREAN, AND HUMPHREY IN THE TOURNAMENT. MR. BUCK COCHRAN: COACH DENNIS FELTON HAS AN QUESTION AND ANSWER FORM ON THE Georgiadogs.com website. I think he would like to have Noah on his team, so I’ll ask him if you don’t want to. I am a PROUD GEORGIA BULLDOG FAN, and I HATE NOAH! He runs his mouth too much, is dirty, a crybaby, and A LOSER in every possible way. I live in Fla., and the St. Pete Times sports writer had a column on the sorry f*. He said that Noah catches hell on the road all over the SEC. GOOD! In a Vandy game, the ball bounced the to Vandy coach, and Noahfag tries to get it from the coach, but he hands it to referee like he should have. Noahsissy has a fit. Then in the Kentucky game, Noahass fouls Bradley, the two have words, which sometimes happens in a game. However, Noah won’t shut his mouth. While Bradley is at the free throw line, Noah is still flapping his gums. The ref tells Donovan to talk to the f*, and play continues. All year long, I have been saying that a team, ANY TEAM, needs to have somebody put a body on this guy, and just knock the crap out of him every chance that they get. I want to see Noah get hurt. I hope somebody for UCLA decks him. F—- the CRYBABY GAYLOSERS! GO DAWGS, UGA-A CLASS SCHOOL ALWAYS! UF a CLASSLESS LOSER SCHOOL ALWAYS!

Noah simply represents the best in what a “student athlete” should stand for! He opted to go pro early and stay and that alone, should be utilized by all institutions of higher learning as an example to incoming “student” athletes. He is simply the catalyst for the Gator team and every coach would love to have an individual on their team who could arouse all of the remaining players and help them bring out their best game. Florida is the team to beat and Noah is the reason why. We haven’t seen his complete game yet, but it’s coming my friends! Chomp! Chomp! The Gator will growl and his name is Noah!

Like all controversial subjects, there are pros and cons to Noah. While I admire zest and enthusiam in sports, I also admire dignity and modesty. One thing I always admired about Herschel Walker was the fact that he never spiked a football or did an endzone dance. Afer a long TD run he looked for the nearest official and quietly handed him the ball.

Since Noah is half black, some racists will compare his chest beating to that of King Kong in the movies. Others may find his spirited showing of emotion as refreshing. Since he is in college, he should try to use correct grammar when on television as it reflects badly on his school and ethnicity - “It don’t matter” when asked about ceding, or “Ya know what I mean? I can’t imagine Jesse Owens ever talking like that.

Florida + Ohio State = Dirties programs in the country

The only thing that would make this game interesting would be if someone threw Noah down to the ground by his hair. God, what a disgusting human being.

Noah is one incredibly ugly dude. He looks like he missed several thousand generations of evolution. He would be a perfect fit for the current Geico caveman campaign. The only thing uglier then noah’s homo-erectus type features, will be his game at the NBA level. He will be a total bust.

So easy, even Noah can do it!

Noah also sounds about as intelligent as a caveman as well. His press conference and interviews are a joke. He’s just one small notch beyond grunting. I’d say he possesses the brain power of homo-erectus as well, but that would be an insult to the homo-erectus legacy. He may actually be more in line with Australiopithecus in terms of brain power.

By Noah sucks balls....

Noah is just yet another example that nothing good can ever come from France. Worthless french prick.

Noah, writes poetry and farts butterflies. He volunteers his genius IQ and free time to solve the world’s aids crisis in Africa. He’s as smart as any Nobel peace prize winner. He’s a Doctor and a Lawyer. He enjoys long walks on the beach and political discussions with heads of state. Not to mention he’s the best forward ever! He averages 45 rebounds a game, 15 blocked shots and 74 points.

Wow, there are a lot of Noah haters here, aren’t there? Funny how a lot of the preceding comments liken him to a gorilla, or talk about him missing many generations of evolution. Sounds like a lot of jealousy to me. Listen, Joakim is not here to read these insulting comments, so any pleasure you take from making such spiteful comments must be very little indeed.

I think folks need to chill out and stop hating..gee….. Let the college kid have fun..heck he isn’t hurting anyone so why bother. This kid is talented and if genetics means anything, look up his dad’s Tennis history. As for those racists out there….its 2007 so wake up and smell the coffee……Gators..you deserved the win…
