March Madness in Atlanta:
Check out the AJC’s new Final Four guide

After Tony’s update, log your own opinion in our daily blog.

WHO’S IN?

• Penn (20-8) becomes the first team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament as the Quakers beat Yale 86-58 Friday night to clinch the Ivy League championship. The Ivy does not hold a conference tournament.

WHO GETS IN TODAY?

• East Tennessee State (21-8, RPI 117) faces Belmont (20-9) in Atlantic Sun championship, 4 p.m.

• Winthrop (23-4, RPI 69) faces VMI in the Big South championship, 2 p.m. Does Winthrop get an at-large if they lose?

• Austin Peay (18-10, RPI 121) meets Eastern Kentucky in the Ohio Valley championship, 8 p.m.

• Bobby Cremins, in his first year back in coaching, can go to the NCAA Tournament if College of Charleston (21-10) upsets Davidson (25-4) in the Southern Conference championship, 6 p.m. The game is in Charleston.

Going into Saturday’s play, we think these teams still have some work to do to impress the NCAA Selection Committee:

• Appalachian State (22-6, RPI 57): The Mountaineers were upset in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament by College of Charleston. Are they worthy of an at-large bid after beating Vanderbilt, Virginia, and VCU?

• Clemson (20-9, RPI 47): The Tigers must win at Virginia Tech on Sunday and get hot in the ACC Tournament.

• Florida State (18-11, RPI 50): Seminoles must win at Miami today and win at least two in the ACC Tournament.

• Georgia (16-11, RPI 56): A win over Tennessee (21-9, RPI 8) today would make the committee sit up and take notice. The Bulldogs would be 9-7 against an SEC schedule that included two games against Florida (RPI 10), Tennessee (RPI 8), Kentucky (RPI 9), and Vanderbilt (RPI 27).

• Illinois (21-9, RPI 32): the Illini don’t have a decent road win but could make up ground by beating Iowa today and making some noise in Big Ten Tournament.

• Michigan (20-10, RPI 48): Wolverines, who beat Indiana and Michigan State in February, could make a big step by beating Ohio State at home today.

• Oklahoma State (19-9, RPI 42): Cowboys have two games left with Baylor and Nebraska. Must win both and go deep into Big 12 Tournament to have a chance.

• West Virginia (8-7, RPI 55): Mountaineers have lost three of our since upsetting UCLA.

BY CONFERENCE

We project that 22 of the 31 conferences will receive only one bid. The other 43 spots in the NCAA Field …

• SEC (5): Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt. Tournament: March 8-11, Atlanta.

• PAC-10 (6): Arizona, Oregon, Southern Cal, Stanford, UCLA, Washington State. Tournament: March 7-10, Los Angeles.

• Mountain West (3): Air Force, BYU, UNLV Tournament: March 6, 8-10, Las Vegas.

• Missouri Valley (3): Creighton, Missouri State, Southern Illinois. Tournament: Today-Sunday, St. Louis.

• Colonial (3): Drexel, Old Dominion, VCU. Tournament: Today-March 5, Richmond.

• Big 12 (4): Kansas, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech. Tournament: March 8-11, Oklahoma City.

• Big Ten (5): Indiana, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin. Tournament: March 8-11, Chicago

• Big East (7): Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Marquette, Syracuse, Villanova. Tournament: March 7-10, New York.

• ACC (7) Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech. Tournament: March 8-11, Tampa.

How do you see it?

wow what will be the uga fans explianation tommorow if tech wins is 20-10 8-8 winning 7 of last 9. How will they do the liberal spin on how uga should be in over tech I though do agree they should be in over alabama because bama sucks but uga does have chance to luck up and win sec championship not likely but crazier things have happened like barack hussian obama being taken serious as a presidential canidate. Face it uga fans with reggie ball gone tech will be top in state in all sports except womans bball

How can the Big 12 get four in, when Tech is in fifth place. KSU finished in fourth, ahead of Tech a full game. you probably meant the four Big 12 teams are Texas, A&M, Kansas and KSU. Only three should get in. The Big 12 Conference RPI is seventh in the NCAA, and they don’t deserve but only three bids.

Now, Randy, make nice and pretend to have some class, which is apparently a longshot for someone such as yourself. Has UGA beaten a UNC or a Duke, or for that matter, itself? Look at the stats and the records, Randy, if you can manage that through your clenched teeth and buttocks. Tech is in. Georgia ain’t. Now there’s some colloquial language you might understand, much as it pains me to write it. And reach into your back pocket, dip some Skoal, and calm down. Facts are facts, bro. Accentuate the positive. The NIT is better than nothing at all. Sort of.

Techsteroochee has a point, Randy, accentuate the positive. Just think about the real southern sport: College Football. Suddenly I hear teeth-a-clenchin’ and pimples-a-poppin’.

Facts are facts, bro? Tech is in: NOT A FACT! They still have a losing record in the conference, and must face a BC team with twice as many ACC wins as losses. But we’re used to hearing the Jack-its talk trash when they’re on the brink of a good season. Then……WHAM!! Reality sneaks up and sends you crashing!

And no, I’m not just talking football, just the facts.

Hey Tony Barnhart!!! I have met you a couple of times before and I know you are not controlling this blog, but hey come on now….Why does this blog site allow such low class comments from so many low class folks? Isn’t there an editorial obligation to keep some standards of decorum? This has nothing to do with free speech….It is more like freedom to rant and rave worthlessly and show how much of a loser one can truly be. Clean up this page or you will lose more readers than you already have….food for thought.

Tech does need the win today to put us in the big dance. If we lose we will still get a good look, but we can not put ourselves in that situation. Tech needs to finish strong, and I believe we will. Everthing seems to be coming together at the right time for us. I thought Georgia was a Tourny team for sure a couple of weeks ago, but they p** all that away yesterday. Uga had opportunity after opportunity, but instead of coming down and running an offense they would just run down and throw up a 3. 11 straight possesions they chunked a 3 and missed every single one of them. UGA does not need to worry about Felton taking another job after that p** poor coaching job yeterday. He had absolutly no coaching strategy at the most critical point of the game. If uga had taken it to the paint 11 straight times and only made 4 of them they would have won. With coaching like that you guys will be out by the second round of the NIT. This year was Feltons chance to do something. Now he is losing several key players and it’s back to rebuilding for UGA Hoops. Tech on the other hand is on the way up. We have a young team and another top 10 recruiting class in line for next season. Paul Hewitt is stacking up talent and builing a program at Tech. I find myself frustrated at times with the way Hewitt does things, but I usally like the end result. Hewitt needs to show TECH fans something today and finish the regular season strong. I really believe this team will do that winning 6 out of 8 to finish the season. Uga fans have to look foward to football. It’s all they have outside of womens gymnastics. They may say they do not care about basketball, but it kills them to not even be in the mix in March. March Madness is the most compelling sporting event all year college or pro. Good Luck in the NIT Dawgs!

Felton is a p** poor coach. We have got to start getting better players. Shooting 3s can only get you so far, but Felton cant see this.

I must first start by saying i hate uga with a passion because of its sidewalk fans and fairweather fans, but after watching the first half of southern ill. and creighton there is no way either one of those teams would beat uga with or without mercer athleticly the teams arnt even comparable. So before yall fill out your office pools go check out these overrated teams that are 25 and 6 because they have played nobody

Great game today. The thing that is missing is that swagger, that Jarret Jack and Wil Bynum enthusiasm. Somebody needs to get it and pass it around as that will carry us far in the Dance. Right now, if it’s “crunch time”, who does Paul give the ball to? We’ve got a bunch of guys who “could” do it, but is there someone who “will” do it? I hope we find that in the ACC tourney.

By UGA sucks!
