Does Byars top the list?

This surely would have been a laughable thought when the season started: a Vanderbilt player for SEC player of the year.

Yet Derrick Byars is making a stronger case for the honor after his big showing in Vandy’s upset of Kentucky over the weekend. Would he be your pick?

If not, who’s your choice? Big Baby at LSU, which is having a rough year? Anybody from Florida, which has four strong starters? Chris Lofton of Tennessee, who was injured for a while but has returned strong? What about Tre Kelly of South Carolina?

Give us your best five players for the All-SEC first team. There are a lot of outstanding players to choose from.

Derrick Byars should be the SEC POY. He has sigle handiedly willed Vandy to win in several games this year. He has a complete game and will be a first round NBA draft pick. plus, he’s an all-around good guy who knows it’s “not about him”.

Should Byars be POY in the SEC? Absolutely. Whether or not he will be is a different story - Vandy gets little respect or recognition from the national media. But anyone who has paid any attention to the Commodores this season knows that Byars has been an absolute beast in Conference Play this season. While Vandy has important veteran players who know their roles, Byars has stepped up as a force and has played a huge role in the Commodores winning 10 Conference games and clinching 2nd place in the SEC East

There is no doubt that Derrick Byars should be SEC Player of the Year. Vandy is a team without an inside presence and relies heavily on Derrick to take over a game. He makes the key plays down the stretch in most of their wins. He also guards the other team’s best player. He is without a doubt the best overall player in the conference. Just ask Kentucky.

Remember what I said earlier about the media not giving a shred of respect to Vandy? Case and point: Byars a unanimous 1st team SEC player and voted SEC POY by the leagues coaches. Kevin Stallings, Coach of the Year. Neither Stallings or Byars was recognized by the media.
