Tony Barnhart’s daily picks
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Following Tony’s update, log your own opinion in our daily blog.
WHO’S IN
• Santa Clara (19-7, RPI) takes Gonzaga’s spot as the projected West Coast championship. Gonzaga (18-10, RPI 71) has lost three of its last four and won’t get in unless the Bulldogs win the conference tournament.
WHO’S IN TROUBLE
• Clemson (19-7, RPI 30): The RPI is still high but the Tigers have lost seven of their last nine. Clemson still has games remaining with Duke and Miami at home plus Boston College and Virginia Tech on the road.
WHO COULD GET BACK IN
• Kansas State (19-8, RPI 50): The Wildcats fell off the board after a bad loss at Nebraska last week. Bob Huggins’ team could get back on with a win tonight against Kansas (23-4, RPI 17) tonight at Manhattan.

1: Wisconsin, Ohio State, UCLA, Florida
2: North Carolina, Kansas, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M

Where is Georgia? They’re schedule is strong and they’ve got quality wins over Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Assuming they do no worse than 2-2 over the last 4 regular season games and pick up a win in the conference tourney, I think a 19-11 UGA team out of the SEC is hard to turn away. Unrelated Question: How good a shot does UNC have at beating out maybe UCLA for a 1 seed? Basketball is great.

Where are the Ole Miss fans who was screaming and hollering last week about being left out? Oh that’s right they are quiet now after they got the beat down @ Arkansas Saturday.

I know the Big East has a lot of good teams, but any chance of DePaul getting in? They have three good wins in a row and a good record.

The ACC will not have 8 teams make the field, and the number one rated conference in the RPI, the SEC, will get 6 bids.

Per the previous two jackleg comments, the ACC currently has 9, count ‘em, 9 teams in the RPI top 50. That is what you call balance. And oh yea, despite lack of depth/youth, teams like NC State and Wake are not chopped liver either.

Receipt——UGA needs to win 3 of their remaining 4 SEC games and make a showing in the SEC tournament. Given the Dawgs’ current RPI and marginal overall win-loss record, they need wins, notwithstanding their respectiable conference record.

The Big Ten is weak this year, UNC should be a number one seed from the best conference in America.

Years ago, the ACC/Big East had to be stopped because it wasn’t competitive enough to hold TV interest. The ACC/Big 10 hasn’t been much different. Bring on any conference, including you SEC homers, and it will only continue. Top to bottom, year in and year out, the ACC has more quality teams and does better in the Big Dance. If the NCAA selection committee wants to snub the ACC, that is their business, but the ACC has, and will continue to have, the best winning percentage in the dance of any conference out there.

Sorry Stacy, I was having fun in New Orleans. But now that I’m back let me just ask why did you not post a comment last week? Immean here I am supporting my team and all you have to say is “Where was the Ole Miss fans who were screaming and hollering”. First of all I do not see how you can scream and holler on a message board with no audio. Second of all I think it’s real classy to bash a team after they lost and act like your the s**t. If your going to bash Ole Miss fans, do it when we win as well! Hotty Toddy Stacy! P.S. That Arkansas edumacation sure done did yer grahmer skills well.

Just a commment on the Dawgs. The RPI took a hit after Kennesaw, but will rise again, especially after Tenn. and UK. Our schedule is in the top 15 of SOS in the country. We need at least a split, preferably 3-1 or 4-0, and at least one win has to be over UT or UK. A semifinal appearance in the tourney wouldn’t hurt, either.

bobby,
number of basketball courts vs hockey rinks in both white and black communities. In other words, whites have much more access to hockey rinks that do blacks vs basketball courts which is more equal for both, but yet the blacks dominate the NBA.
you’re an idiot for trying to bring up such a comparison.
Ever wonder why they don’t hire more black coaches because they know the whites will leave the sport in droves when there are no whites on the floor. The NBA, NFL know this and the reluctance to hire black coaches. Case in point, SD hires Turner vs Singletary. Norm has one 1 playoff games in 9 years as a head coach. 49-59 at Washington Singletary didn’t get a chance. Yeah right.

With the ACC having 9 teams in the top 50, I don’t have a problem with them getting 8 teams in.
The two major disagreements I have with his projection are Oklahoma State over Georgia, and Drexel over Notre Dame.
Oklahoma State still is winless on the road for the entire season, and last weekend’s home loss to Missouri should knock them out, unless they play their way back in.
While Drexel has losses to Penn, Rider, and William & Mary.

No Dogs or Rebels? I think you’r disrespecting the SEC with only one West team. It’s a battle out there and there are some good teams.
