The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Following Tony’s forecasts, log your own opinion in our daily blog.
WHO’S IN
• Georgia Tech (17-8, RPI 45) after beating Florida State on the road Tuesday night. The Yellow Jackets now have three wins against the Top 25 in the RPI and seven wins against the Top 50.
• Texas Tech (16-10, RPI 34) seemed out after four straight losses but then won a big one at Texas Tech Tuesday night. The Red Raiders now have two wins over Texas Tech and one over Kansas.
WHO’S OUT
• Notre Dame (18-6, RPI 55) has only one win against the Top 25 and only three against the Top 50.
• Kansas State (18-8, RPI 52) had a terrible loss at Nebraska (13-9, RPI 79) Tuesday night. The Wildcats have only one win against the Top 50, that coming against No. 49 Texas.
WORTH NOTING
• Texas A&M slips back to a No. 2 seed while UCLA goes back to a No. 1.
• North Carolina (22-4, RPI 3) drops to a No. 2 seed after losing to Virginia Tech at home. Ohio State moves into a No. 1.
• Purdue (16-9, RPI 43) may knock fellow Big Ten team Michigan State (18-8, RPI 34) if the Boilermakers win at home against Indiana on Thursday. That game was postponed from Wednesday due to snow.

Tony, you can’t seriously believe nine ACC teams get in, can you?
Seven each from the ACC and SEC.

If Tony is right and the ACC gets 9 in I will be amazed. Granted, I think there are 9 worthy of getting in but I just don’t seen the selection committee doing it. 1 or 2 ACC teams is gonna get shafted to the NIT, I just hope it isn’t the Jackets.

Still alot of basketball to be played the next 2-3 weeks, folks. I like the way Tech is playing right now, and if they continue to show the defensive intensity, and if JC continues to be a superstar, they’ll be in. If they backslide to the habits of January, they’ll slide back to the NIT.

Tech still has a tough road, they are five and six in conference and I think they need to 8-8 or 7-9 and get a conference tourney win. 7-9 is dicey. Duke on the road Sunday will be tough, if they lose they are 5-7 and all of sudden 8-8 looks unlikely. I think UGA needs to go 8-8 in conference and at 6-5, I think they have a good shot to pick up 2 wins.
Neither team in my mind is anywhere close to being a lock. They are both solidly on the bubble.

Tech’s win last night was big but not enough yet. They need to get to 500 in the ACC. Winning 3 out of the last 5 will make them a lock.

Lets not get intio the Texas Tech beating Texas Tech thing….Maryland in the tourny? Virginia and Va Tech as a 4 seed? Texas and Georgetown as an 8 seed? Alabama an 11 and West Virginia a 12 seed? USC a 6 seed? I though you were a little better than this…..If UNC winns the 9 bid ACC they will be a 1 seed…Look out for the 14 seed Winthrop knocking off one of your 4 seeds…They can play with any of them!!

Tony, something else I’d like you to comment on. Although I hate how people wrongly use the RPI, the SEC is number one in that thing right now and has the number 2 out-of-conference SOS. The ACC is number 2, and has the number 9 out-of-conference SOS.
Why are you carrying water for the ACC? Dude, you’re in the middle of SEC Country. Give some props to this league. As far as I’m concerned, the SEC should get 8 teams in and the ACC 6, or seven at the most.

Rattler, your team was beaten by a lower/middle of the pack ACC team. 9 may be pushing it, but top to bottom, there is no stronger league.

I bust Tony’s chops about not putting enough ACC teams in the early articles and now I see the whole picture of who is busting his chops when I am happy. The SEC guys want their pound of flesh. I don’t mind the SEC getting equal billing it is the northern schools from the big population areas that get too much for too little. The Big 10 isolates itself in playing that part of the world and running its record up against “has been power houses” that have seen their day. We thought Ohio State was a football team for the ages all during the fall and Michigan not far behind. Now we are going through the same with basketball. There has been a real power shift in all sports and it went south. No longer are football schools not playing basketball or basketball schools not playing football Schools like Florida and I suspect North Carolina are or heading to powerhouses in both . The population has exploded in the south, and the athletes that once went north are staying home. The reporters stayed up north and failed to see the action moving this direction and new participates joining the old line. Even the Southern Conference is producing a handful of competitive basketball teams for the national level.

Tech not a shoe-in by any means. Also, the committee has been very anti-ACC the last few years, so I can not see 9 getting in. It will be a struggle to get 5 in.

Well, if Tony’s correct that Texas Tech beat Texas Tech twice, then I guess the rest is correct as well. By the way, how many fans came and does it also count as a 2 losses?

I know I’m echoing others, but I’m not quite sure how Georgetown is an EIGHT seed after thumping Marquette, Louisville & West Virginia and Marquette is a THREE seed??? Is Mr. Barnhart following the Big East at all?

Tony, You are a complete dumbass. Are you ever right about anything, How did you get a job? Do you know anything about sports? Why did you pick Tech over Ga. in football? Why did you pick Va.Tech over Ga. in football? Why did you pick Auburn over Ga. in football. Are you really a human being or just a computere chip gone bad. Why are you so stupid Mr.Tony Barnhart?

Thanks Wishful. Isn’t it funny how all the sad UGA fans seem to conveniently forgotten about the Vandy and UK football games? How hideous their team was and still is. My favorite UGA story of all time though still is that test their asst basketball coach gave to his students that were bball and fball athletes a few years ago. Now that was Rich!!!

LOL @ Tony. As it stands now, 4 out of the 9 ACC teams mentioned by Tony have losing conference records. The selection committee will not take 4 teams from the ACC with losing conference records. Tony, pass whatever it is that you are smoking.

RattlerGator,
“Middle of SEC territory” ? Lets count:
Georgia - 1 SEC School, 1 ACC School.
Florida - 1 SEC School, 2 ACC Schools.
South Carolina - 1 SEC School, 1 ACC School.
North Carolina 4 ACC Schools.
Virginia - 2 ACC Schools.
True, when you go to Alabama we find 2 SEC Schools and there are two in Tenn. Then, you have to cross the Mississipi River.
Dude, like it or not, you are in the middle of ACC territory.

Nobody gives a damn about the ACC in Georgia, really and truly. And the SEC football and basketball championships are regularly held in Georgia. Not so for the ACC, which is still basically a North Carolina conference.
Now put that in your pipe and smoke it, Bobo.

See your quote below note that it should read wins over Texas A&M and Kansas. They did not win overthemselves, a la Texas Tech. Don’t you proof read before you post

Hey Coach, When counting the number of SEC vs ACC schools in the area, you said after Alabama you had to cross the Mississippi River to get to more SEC schools. I just wanted to point out that the “Mighty River” is on the West side of Mississippi. In addition, Baton Rouge is on the East side of the river, too.

These picks are meaningless anyway, but how can you not even mention Louisville, currently tied for 3rd in the Big East having just beaten Pitt by 13 in Pittsburgh. The Cards have an excellent chance to be 10 and 6 (or better) in conference with 20 overall wins heading into the conference tourney. They have won 13 of their last 17 games. Why wouldn’t they get in? You don’t even mention them?

Arkansas over Georgia? Arkansas got drilled by Mississippi St. last night by 24. They are 4-7 in the conference and lost to Georgia at home. Please justify this?

Barnhardt has no idea what the heck he is talking about. I am not sure if these are based on projections, gut feeling or where the teams stand today. Either way Georgia has to be in over Tech, Alabama and Arkansas, all of which are very shaky. Tech is probably the best team out of these 4, but looking at their remaining schedule it is going to take a miracle for them to finish with a winning conference record. Based on Tech’s RPI, they have to finish .500 or better in conference. Georgia has the best chance of finishing 9-7 or better with really only 1-2 tough games remaining. No way Alabama and Arkansas get in. Looking at the West standings and remaining schedules, only 1 team from the West can finish with a winning record and even that could be a stretch. I predict Alabama wins the West with an 8-8 confernce record and will be the only team dancing with Fl, Ky, Tn, Van, and Ga. Barnhardt you need to spend some more time on your analysis especially as it pertains to the teams in the SEC. Ole Miss has a better chance than Arkansas. Crazy!

First off ugay will not make it to the tourney especially without mercer. and crazy you are an idiot there is no way they take ugay over tech. IF ugay makes it to the tourney they will get smashed in the first round, your entire team is focused around a guy who just tore up his knee.

Tony: I hope that you are right about the ACC, but I don’t think the committee will take 9 teams. Even though I love Carolina, I think you are right on with them going as a No.2 seed; they have 3 road games with teams that “must win” and Duke at CH, which is always tough.

Way off base. Villanova above Geeoretown? got to be kidding. And Marquette lost again to Depaul. They are the most overrated team there. And you need to include Syracuse, who is coming on. West Virginia has the weakest Big East schedule, which will play a role in Committee determination. And cannot leave out Louisville either. Typical Barnhart idiotic picks, like his bowl game picks.

Tony, I believe you are pretty much dead on except I believe the ACC will only get 8 teams. I also don’t understand Virginia being above VT when VT slaughtered them by 27. Seems Virginia should be around 20-25.
