Breaking down the seeds

March Madness in Atlanta:
Check out the AJC’s new Final Four guide

NOTE: At this moment there are 23 conferences that will receive only one bid to the NCAA Tournament. We project that the remaining 42 spots in the field will be distributed as follows.

ACC (8)

In: Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech.

Bubble: Georgia Tech (16-8, RPI 56).

Comment: After four straight losses Duke (18-7, RPI 18) has dropped to a No. 7 seed and is falling fast. The ACC has eight teams in the RPI Top 35.

BIG EAST (6)

In: Georgetown, Marquette, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Villanova, West Virginia.

Bubble: None.

Comment: West Virginia (18-5, RPI 39) did itself a world of good by knocking off UCLA, which was No. 1 in the RPI. The Mountaineers still need to beat somebody decent on the road. They’ll get a chance tonight against Georgetown (18-5, RPI 26).

BIG TEN (5)

In: Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin

Bubble: Purdue (16-9, RPI 41)

Comment: Some folks already have Purdue in the field. If the Boilermakers, who took Ohio State to the wire last Saturday, came at home Wednesday against Indiana, we might put them in as well.

BIG 12 (5)

In: Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M. Bubble: Texas Tech (15-10, RPI 45)

Comment: With an RPI of 54, some folks think Texas (17-7) may not belong in the field. Beating Oklahoma State (18-5, RPI 20) tonight in Austin would probably put and end to that argument.

MISSOURI VALLEY (3)

In: Creighton, Missouri State, Southern Illinois.

Bubble: Bradley (16-10, RPI 48).

Comment: Southern Illinois (20-5, RPI) proved itself to be the class of the league by beating Creighton on Saturday. We have the Salukis as a No. 4 seed but they could move up by beating Missouri State (18-7, RPI 32) on the road Tuesday night.

MOUNTAIN WEST (3)

In: Air Force, BYU, UNLV.

Bubble: None.

Comment: Slow week in the MWC. Next week the leaders start to face off. BYU (18-6, RPI 23) has won six straight.

PAC-10 (6)

In: Arizona, Oregon, Southern Cal, Stanford, UCLA, Washington State.

Bubble: None.

Comment: UCLA (20-3, RPI 1) drops to a No. 2 seed after losing to West Virginia. The Bruins have lost three of their last four road games. Southern Cal (18-7, RPI 47) has a big game at Arizona (17-7, RPI 6) Thursday night.

SEC (6)

In: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

Bubble: Georgia (13-9, RPI 43).

Comment: Despite Alabama’s loss to Ole Miss and Arkansas’s loss to LSU, both teams remain in the RPI top 40. Alabama (18-6, RPI 30) has a tough patch coming up with road games at Florida (Wednesday) and Tennessee (Feb. 21) plus a home game with Kentucky on Saturday. That could open the door for Georgia.

Tony You hommer where is Ole Miss?? Last i looked we were first in the west. We might not be “in” yet, i think we need to win at least 20 but to have UGa on the bubble over us the hottest team in the sec is a JOKE.

Get it right Tony ! Appalachian State will win the Southern Conference - Beat Davidson AT Davidson - Wins over Vanderbilt and Virginia - Not just a football school this year !

UGA is 14-9…nice reporting Barnhart

Col. Reb——Tony’s not so much a UGA homer as he is making a respectable judgment call. UGA has played 11 teams that are or were ranked in the top 25, and bested 4 of them. Ole Miss has played 8 teams that are or were ranked in the top 25, and beat 2 of them. UGA is 6-5 in the SEC; Ole Miss is 5-5. UGA plays in the harder SEC division this year, and has a stronger RPI. Marginal edge to the Dawgs for an NCAA bid, but they need to improve their overall 14-9 win-loss record to get to the magic 18 or 19 wins.

Ole Miss just needs to win games, but the 6 teams in the SEC West are so evenly matched this year (a 2-win difference between current 1st and 6th-place teams) that it may be tough for the 3rd and 4th team in the West to get an NCAA bid. First-round SEC tournament wins would obviously help both teams’ chances.

No need to complain about Tony’s predictions——we’ll know for sure in 3 weeks.

Florida is coming on like a freight train and has anybody looked at Memphis? What is the best team above the Mason Dixon line or for that fact below it? The fact is the reason it is hard to tell above is because there are very few if any and the reason it is so hard below is because there are too many good ones to figure. I think the Southern Conference has more able teams than what I’m seeing up north and they only get one team entry.

Actually Tony is correct about UGA’s record.

One of UGA’s wins is over Valdosta ST - which is not a Div 1A school. Only Div 1A wins count toward NCAA Tourney inclusion so from an NCAA Selection Committee standpoint UGA is 13-9 and when they get the sheet on UGA Valdosta St will not be on it - nor any stats associated with it. Nor is the Valdosta St game included in UGA’s RPI calculation.

I think UGA and GT are both in the same boat with 6 to play - go 4-2 or end up in the NIT.

If Tech can get a couple of wins on the road and win out at home, they’ll be a lock. But even if they win all their home games (including UNC), if they can’t win on the road, no one will give them a second look.

By The Tide Rolls

February 12, 2007 04:38 PM | Link to this

Ronald Steele has been saving his knee and ankle for the home stretch. The Tide makes a run heading into the SEC and NCAA tourney and takes two of the last three (Kentucky, Tenn, Florida).

And in doing so slams the door on both GA and Ole Miss. Neither deserve to be at the dance.

I agree totally with gdawg. Also, where is colred from…ole p**? We’ll see who wins the division. It won’t be the p**. Gottfried is not the greatest coach, but we will make some noise this year at THE BIG DANCE!

THE TIDE IS RISING AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

Tony… Can you or someone else please tell me how OKSt is any better off than Georgia Tech?

Based on the graphic I saw last night:

They have an unbeaten home record (14-0).

They have a one loss neutral court record (4-1).

They have not won a road game (now 0-5).

That resume looks very similar to Georgia Tech, just with fewer “road” games. Yet they have a much higher RPI and are “locks” for the tourney.

Please, explain this!!!!!

Duke as a 7 seed….. we’ll see that going downard as the weeks play out.

By GT80

February 13, 2007 11:44 AM | Link to this

Everyone needs to forget about who is in the Top 25. The fact that no team from the ACC other than Carolina and Duke were in it until this week shows that the voters don’t really pay attention to what is really happening. The RPI is a litte more on top of things. But Tony B knows not basketball. His AJC bosses make him do this because he can’t write about SEC football 12 months out of the year.

Tony,

Where do I begin? Would have thought you learned something in your Selection Committee meeting last week, but obviously not.

First off, Clemson would probably would be no worse than a 7 seed today. You’re way off there. Your 11 seed seems to indicate that they might be on the cusp of bubbledom. They aren’t even close.

In the SEC, not only is UGA nowhere near bubble status, but they would get in ahead of Vandy, Arkansas or Alabama. And, Ole Miss IS firmly on the bubble.

Michigan State? I don’t even think you can call them a bubble team at this point.

Georgetown as a 10 seed? How about a 4.

The Big 12 may be where you put forth the worst effort. Not only is Oklahoma State not a 5 seed, they don’t even deserve a berth.

sec conference record should be the deciding factor for Ga. If Ga goes 8-8 in the conference…they could still get in provided that there are not 6 other teams that are 8-8 or better.

I am assuming that they take 6 from the sec and that none of the weaker teams will win the sec tournament.

If Ga gets surpassed by a team with a worse sec record…that will upset me and probably many of you too.
