Oklahoma State moves Georgia up on the recruiting priority list

Oklahoma State, which plays UGA in the season-opener, said recruiting the state of Georgia has moved up on the priority list after the Cowboys had so much success this past year. Georgia has rocketed up to third.

“Right now, Georgia is third for us,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy told the AJC. “Oklahoma, Texas and then Georgia are the states we’re going to work hard on. In the spring, we’re going to put a [couple of assistants] there. We’re actually going to double up our recruiting efforts in the state of Georgia.”

Oklahoma State signed three of the state’s top players last month, including Carver-Columbus linebacker LeRon Furr, Walton fullback David Paulsen and Mill Creek defensive end Ryan Robinson. Paulsen selected the Cowboys over an offer from Georgia.

“We feel like we had a great year in our first season of really recruiting Georgia,” Gundy said. “Because of Georgia’s population and level of high school football, it gives us 20-30 prospects to evaluate. If we’re able to get two out of there per year, then it’s certainly worth flying down there. We can fly direct out from Oklahoma City or Tulsa into Atlanta.”

UGA plays at Oklahoma State in the season-opener on Sept. 5.

Paulsen, who is a lifelong Georgia fan, said on Sunday night he was first offered as a conditional grayshirt, meaning if the Bulldogs had signed too many players he would’ve delayed his enrollment until January. However, Paulsen said Georgia coach Mark Richt called on the dawn of signing day to say it was a regular offer.

Oklahoma State is not going to recruit Georgia so great after the Dawgs blow them out on Sept. 5. It’s going to be UGLY. They are wasting money recruiting our kids. Stay in Kansas or Utah.

Go ahead and talk your smack Dawg Strong. You guys are going to be in for a surprise on Sept. 5. Don’t forget the game is AT Oklahoma State. When we crush Georgia, we’ll come back in Feb 2010 and sign all of your state’s best prospects.

Pokie will be a tough game. Their O retrurns few key guys on O.. Zac Ronbinson, Des Bryant.. etc. Their D gave up a lot of points and yardage tho. Dawgs will go down to Stillwater with a chip on their shoulders.. Our D has something to prove and our O-line will prolly set the temple early by controlling the line.. so, it should be a great game… can’t wait.

Go Dawgs!

Georgia will always have to deal with some head-to-head battles with Florida, Alabama, and UT in the state of Georgia…but I am not kept awake at night worrying about Oklahoma State raiding the state. Notice that of the three players Oklahoma State signed from the state of Georgia this year, UGA passed completely on two of them and offered only a “grayshirt” to a third.

I think this is a good thing for GA high school football. Teams in the SE have long known that GA produces some great football players, but national coverage is helping people outside of the SE see the talent as well. Like Garner says “We can’t sign all 100+ D1 prospects in GA”. OSU is a good program and this will be good for young prospects.

O State is an up and coming program and the game in Sept is gonna be a hard fought battle, but I believe the Dawgs will win it. As for their recruiting Georgia, DeployedDawg has a good outlook on that. If I were a kid being recruited, I would look at Oklahoma State before looking at the schools in the Big 10. Too cold up there for me.

Well hey, somebody needs to come into this state and recruit players that can coach them up. Mark Richt seems to be having a hard time coaching the best of the best in Georgia…(see the Alabama, Florida thrashings and see the star deficient Tech squad hand the dawgs that rear end.) I think it’s only fair that our players in this state go somewhere that they can reach their full potential.

There are enough good players in Georgia to go around to everyone besides thats great for the kids in Georgia to get more opportunities. I wish Georgia would recruit harder in California and Texas. It’s worht noting that every state is known for having certain type players like Florida has speedy skill players in every county in Florida, Ohio and Penn has the huge lineman, Texas and Cal are werer the great qbs are, georgia has the linebackers and running backs, and recivers, db and athletes can be found every where.

I have been to Stillwater, Oklahoma and I will be there when the Dawgs play Okie State this year. I know T Bone Pickens has built some great athletic facilities, but Stillwater is a forsaken location! The wind keeps blowing across the prairie forever. When it gets cold, it is DAMN COLD with the wind blowing. Oh yes, did I mention the fun of being in tornado alley? Just how many Georgia kids will committ to OSU when, and if, they get an offer from an SEC school? I hate to say this but even south carolina is a better choice than Okie State!

Big Pappi A greyshirt is when the player has to pay their own way aka a preferred walk on.

Sickandtired Go away knat…jealousy is such an ugly thing. I guess top 10 seven out of eight years, 10 wins the last 7 of 8. Please tell me when GT had their last 10 win season? counting the ‘vacated wins’ by GT, UGA has won 17 out of 18 against you guys…that IS coaching them UP!

sickandtired: Good moniker because most of us here feel the same about you.

“…the star deficient Tech squad hand the dawgs that rear end…” A three point win?! You’re a joke.

I also think it’s good for our state players being recruited by the likes of OSU; more recognition, etc. As long as we get the top recruits, we’ll be fine. As stated, can’t get em all. But I’d hate for it to affect Ga Southern and Ga State, etc. There’s enough players here that we don’t need to go all the way to Calif to recruit, unless a kid wants to be a Bulldog and just comes our way. We’re doing fairly well out-of-state however.

Big Pappi, A gray shirt means that the player agrees to come in in December instead of june and count to next years crop. Alabama, Ole Miss and others are having to use this route to be able to take all their signees. As you well know, you can only take in a total of 25 players any one year with a total of 85 total scholarships available at any one time Georgia only signed 20 this year 3 came in early so really this class is only 17 if all are accepted into school. Let’s say 8 junior players leave the team for the NFL or some player quit or are kicked out of school that means that Georgia will have 8 places available for the 85 total. They can sign 33 in 2010 and get 8 to come in early and count to the 17 of this year, so you can actually make it work. I hope this helps. It’s a little confusing.

Stillwater is colder than kraut. Ya gotta really love cold and tornadoes to want to go there. Ya also gotta love not having friends or family around to watch you play. They can’t read about ya in the local newspapers in Georgia either. Hotels book solid for home games so if ya are not a regular fan you are out of luck. Anyone who does travel there to see ya play can’t get a room locally. No sweet tea, no okra, no grits, who from the South would want to go there?

Freddie Munzenmaier was asked to gray shirted as well.

I agreed, Our D was underachieved last season. Perhaps has to do with injuries and lack of focus in the game… too many frigging penalties. I’m all about playing physical, emotional football, but we must be level headed as well.

Jeff Owen and Rennie Curran will the vocal leaders on D.. something we lacked on last season. I expect our front four to get back to its old selves again. Rodderick Battle and Justin Houston must manned up the edges. Kiante Tripp, Demarcus Dobbs, Neland Ball, Darius Dewberry, Jeremy Longo, Cornelius Washington, to name a few.. must continue bring pressure.

By beanuga

March 15, 2009 12:28 PM | Link to this

If the DEs do not get any pressure this season Uga is in trouble again this season. WMs defense has to put pressure on the QB. WM is not aggressive enough. I would hate to see them waste Kiante Tripps college carrier changing him around so much from offense to defense. I hope DE is his home. Lets go Dawgs!!!tighten up this program. You better believe every other team is.

By ThaDawgdude

March 15, 2009 12:56 PM | Link to this

I really agree with utilizing Kiante Tripp. The guy is just too talented and it would be a horrible thing for him to just see spot duty his last year or two. That would really not look good for the program either. I think you have to take a guy with his physical tools and make him a bookend D-end. He’s got the speed to be a good pass rusher as well. I hope to see him as the starter on the strongside before this season is over. Not to take anything away from guys like Dobbs, he’s one of my hometown heroes and a real good player but he’s just not 6’6” 280lb with 4.7 speed. It all comes down to reps, understanding how to play, not making mistakes, and most of all effort.

By SamoanDawg

March 15, 2009 2:48 PM | Link to this

Kiante is a FREAK! I went to the Tenn game… I had a free pass to be on the sideline during pregame. I was watching all these skill guys warming up.. AJ Green, MoMass, Stafford, Moreno, etc.. all of sudden this huge dude came out of tunnel, warming up.. I couldn’t believe the size of this guy.. I think Kiante weighed at 6’6, 290-lbs, OMG, the kid was all freakin muscle.. biggest TE, I’ve ever seen in person. I hope coach will play him more, b/c I hate to see his talent waste, like we did with Leonard Pope.

I can’t wait to see Brandon Wheeling-DT, walkon play. Geno Atkins has praised him a lot. He said, BW has been the hardest worker at his position. I’m happy to hear some walkons getting recognized. Not only that we definitely need more depth at DT. b/c I think Bradon Wood will be taking medical hardship year.

Yes, it was the worst run D I’ve ever seen from my beloved Dawgs.. bad pursue angles and arm tackles was the sign of a worn out D. Our front four were worn down by all the chop blocks. We didn’t play like the ‘ole dawg D. BUT, we bounce back and shut down Rinnger in the Capital. Let’s clear something up concerning weather. This is from the Weather Channel when comparing Atlanta to Stillwater Oklahoma:

Atlanta/Fulton County Arpt, GA on average is warmer than Stillwater, OK by 1°F.

Okie State recruiting Ga. may be a good thing. Let them deal with Meyer, Saban, Spurrier, MIles, Kiffin et al. While you guys fight it out CMR will go to Mass. and find another four star TE. While Meyer was working so hard for the DB that went to FSU, UGA went to Fla. and got their best QB and TE. So some to Ga. cowboys, but be damn sure you shut your own back door.

I think it’ll be the first time in awhile, Tech will rank higher than the Dawgs in the preseason. Predicting GA at # 18 and Tech #13. Pokies should be in the top 15 as well. Which is a good thing, if OSU is rank higher and then we beat’em, it’ll catapulted us, of course. So, Tech needs to stay undefeated ‘till we meet.

LSU & Gators will definitely be in the top 10.. obviously Gators is #1.

Good for OSU and the state of GA football recruiting. Long time GA residents know that the quality of H.S. football in this state is great, know the nation is taking notice. If OSU can compete for big 12 championships with GA kids on their roster we’ll finally get the recognition Fl, Tx, and Cali get. UGA will be alright cause we still get the top tier kids. OSU and Tech will fight it out for the next level and that is still pretty good. If I were a kid and I had an offer from a big 12 school and an ACC school I’m going Big 12.

The defense will be (hopefully) rejuvenated, with some new faces and some healed-up old ones.

The OL will be stronger.

I hope the Pokes are confident in their ability to win this one in the absence of Moreno and Stafford. They were confident the last time. as well.
